The Honda 300’s

Courtesy of Velocity Cycles Mechanicsburg, Pa By Jim Bull

The Honda 300 Series available at Velocity Cycles. This month’s review was a treat for me. Earlier this year I spoke with Chris Cuomo, owner at Velocity Cycles in Mechanicsburg, Pa and we talked about doing a series of street bike reviews for Brapp Magazine. Yes, a little different content to what you are used to seeing in our pages, but still very much a part of what we all do. After all as many of you youth racers get older you will most likely look to the street to expand your motorcycle riding experiences. As Chris and I spoke I had a few models in mind that I really wanted to experience myself. But for our third segment of the journey, I told Chris - you pick the bike this time. Just about a week before I thought to myself, why don’t you call him back and request a ride on one of Honda’s 300cc bikes. I had the Honda Rebel in mind but thought, any one would do. But as it would work out, my schedule kept me busy and I never got to make the call. As I arrived at the shop that day I was excited to see what I would be swinging a leg over. I walked into the shop and immediately ran into Brandon one of the sales consultants there and I asked him, “What you got for me today Brandon?”, to my surprise he pointed to the Honda CB 300F or standard as I called it. Yes, another score! Now don’t get me wrong, I’m a big bore, high horsepower guy from the word go when it comes to a street riding machine. But there was something about this little Honda single that was calling out to me. We rolled all three available models in the series out into the parking lot, the CB300F (standard), the CBR300R (sport) and of course the Honda Rebel 300 which is their (cruiser) style option. The first two above share identical frame, brakes, engine and motor configurations with the only difference being the added

sport fairings for looks and aerodynamics. The Rebel is almost a model of its own with a different frame, tire sizes, seat, etc to give it that cruiser or retro style while still sharing the same great Honda technology and power plant. So after a few pictures I mounted up on the 300 F and headed towards the hills just north of Mechanicsburg. This bike works great as an entry level machine offering all the goodies a new rider would want. It has a low seat heat, a great center of gravity, awesome brakes, standard ABS, electric start, fuel injection and a boat load of torque for a small displacement bike. On the same token it offers the experienced rider all of the same. An old guy like me could really appreciate the way this bike handled, the ease of balance and weight, the ability to cruise the city streets or burn the back roads at a speed that is safe but yet fun. (disclaimer here: old guys that haven’t grown up, with big bore, high horsepower bikes usually end up with lots of speeding tickets, or buying lots of plastic), making this bike an excellent choice for all riding groups and styles. The best part, oh yeah the Honda 300 series has a starting price range of around $3999.00 and averages 78 MPG. As I made my way back to the shop I just had a big smile on my face. Honda has hit yet another home run with this good looking, fun to ride and affordable machine.

Captains Quarters Happy August everybody and welcome back to another great issue of Brapp Magazine and the hottest month of the year.

In This Issue:

August also brings us the hottest amateur race of the year, the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tn. We were hoping to do a rider preview again this year but just plain ran out of time. Besides there are so many talented riders participating in this event that kicks off a few days prior to our release that we would have never been able to include you all.

Snowshoe GNCC By: Jessica Webster

The 8th round of the Grand National Cross Country series brought the races to the wonderful mountains of Snowshoe, West Virginia. Racing the Snowshoe GNCC is not a small feat for any racer. The mountain that hosts this race sits almost at almost 5,000 feet in elevation. The race itself is mirrored after the famed Blackwater 100 which was the original GNCC. Since the track crew wants to honor the Blackwater every year there is a live engine in town start for all races at Snowshoe creating an exciting change to the traditional dead engine full line start. The Amsoil Snowshoe GNCC features tough hill climbs, fast fire road sections as well as the ever famous Howard’s Hole mud section. The GNCC in Snowshoe attracts many

local and dedicated race fans to watch the racers maneuver these harsh conditions. Many local racers make the journey to test their skills at this, the toughest race in the GNCC series. Some of the locals are running this race to say they competed while others are running the whole series. Whatever their motivation this is a race that will forever be a triumph. Saturdays in the GNCC series are reserved to Quad racers. Local racers like Danny Worhach (ATV 125 Jr.), Lindsey McNamee (ATV Girls 8-15), Hannah Hunter (ATV Women Amateur), Scott Jaudas (ATV 40+ C), Robbie Pecorari (ATV 4x4 Pro), and Matt White (ATV 30+ C) to name a few. The professional quad line has some familiar District 6 names like Chris Borich, Landon Wolfe and Jarrod McClure. Sunday brought on the bike action. Again there was a strong District 6 presence in morning and afternoon classes. Some of the bike participants include A.J. Halford (Bike 65 7-9), Austin Tsakanikas (Bike 65 7-9), Zachary Stoe (Bike 85 12-13), Nathan Dulaney (Bike 85 7-11), Landon Hamilton (Bike 65 7-9), Chad Webster (Bike Sportsman), Jason Mertz (Bike Sportsman), Seth Studlack (Bike Sportsman), Hunter Bush (Bike 250 A), Samantha Bird (Bike Women’s B), and Ryan Francis (Bike XC2 250 Pro). With the challenging conditions that Snowshoe GNCC always has and promises it is a trophy in itself to travel there and compete. Great work to everyone who competed and here’s to next year at Snowshoe! B

Alta Red Shift - An Electrifying Option By: Sean Koeller Revolutionary and amazing, or unwelcome and weird; there’s rarely an in between when it comes to peoples view of the new ALTA Redshift electric motocross bikes. Most people are either black or white on the subject, fearing change or embracing it. The real story comes after they swing a leg over the full-electric bike, usually the first thing out of the persons mouth is, “Wow”. The discussion then changes from, “Are they good or bad for the sport”, to “How can they own one.” Based out of San Francisco, California where they do all their assembly in-house, ALTA has been testing and perfecting their bikes for the last few years on the west coast. From the motocross tracks of SoCal to the mountainous single track that flows through the state if you were paying attention you saw the growing brand start to take shape. They truly burst onto the scene however when AMA motocross and supercross racer, Josh Hill, showed up at the Red Bull Straight Rhythm event in 2016 and competed straight up against full factory 250Fs. While this performance put them on the map to the masses most of us on the east coast were a ride from even seeing one in person let alone riding one, until recently.

faster! Map one is the slowest, and uses the least amount of battery, Map two is controllable in the woods and plenty fast for most guys, Map three seems to be the preferred setting for MX riding as it mirrors the power of a 250F at about 40HP, and Map four is “Unleashed” and is super abrupt and torquey but has the shortest battery life. Without inertia that an Internal Combustion Engine creates, the 260lb motorcycle feels more like a 125. It handles incredibly light, tracks through corners with ease, and hooks up really well in most conditions. The bike does get a little loose when you really crack the throttle especially in already slippery conditions but if you have a steady throttle hand and are conscious about what map you’re in the bike will pull like a tractor. ALTA has built in some engine braking, which is nice since you can’t create your own like you can with a gear box but it is not nearly as much as a 4-stoke. The suspension is a little soft for fast motocrossers but for an all-around type bike it works well for most people, luckily the WP suspension is well-known by most suspension tuners. As of now the battery life is

the biggest draw back; for local motocross it is more than sufficient for a handful of 4 - 6 lap motos and 20 minute practice sessions, but will need to be charged during the day if you were riding practice all day. For off road the battery is a little more difficult to gauge, depending on the map or terrain they say the battery lasts 2 - 4+ hours but realistically it’s more like 1:30 - 3, depending on the rider. For most ALTA customers the biggest selling point is the noise, being able to ride their private MX tracks any time of day, or ride the trails behind their house is invaluable. Not having to change air filters, oils, or top ends is also a huge bonus and saves prep time and money on parts. These bikes won’t “replace” the I.C.E for some time but having it as an option is truly amazing and will only get better. If you are interested in the new ALTA bike, give us a call, shoot an email, or visit us at Town & Country Cycle Center, and keep an eye out on our social media or website for an ALTA demo ride day in the very near future! B

When you first throw a leg over the ALTA you’ll notice how at home you feel; the WP suspension is plush, the NEKEN bars are a nice bend, but then you reach for the nonexistent clutch and see the digital display on the handlebars and realize this is something new. From the first sound of the electric motor humming to hitting the start button and the display flashing green, a smile comes across your face. Your first turn of the throttle is slow, everyone laughs as the bike slowly creeps forward with just a sound of the electric motor engaging and then the real fun begins. A few passes though a field reveal that the bike is surprisingly quick, the BREMBO brakes are strong, and it feels like a dirtbike. After five minutes you no longer reach for the clutch or go to shift gears, you get used to the sound of the chain slapping and the tires searching for traction, and then you realize there are three more maps that make the bike go even

I’d like to give props to both the Pagoda Motorcycle Club and D6 VP Jerry Fessler for putting on this second annual event. The weekend started off with a motocross school on Friday taught by some of the legends of AMA District 6. These racers have dedicated their life to mx and most have held national pro numbers and they volunteered their time to come out and teach the youth of our sport. Guys like Barry Carsten, Gaylon Dickson, Greg Pamart and Casey Clark are what help keep this great sport together. So thanks guys for all you do.

WYATT ROTZ (166) LEADS THE JUNIOR MINI CLASS TO VICTORY

Then on Saturday the track offered up an open practice day followed up by Round #6 of the Henrietta Classic Series on Sunday. At this particular round extended motos and big payouts were offered to honor those Vet Class racers. I’m not sure the number but I believe over $5000 was paid out across a couple of the expert age classes. LEGEND BARRY CARSTEN (31) WINS THE 40 AND 50 PLUS CLASSES

Jeremy Cook would end up taking the honors in the 25 plus and the Vet A divisions with Gaylon Dickson grabbing the 35 and 45 plus wins. Long time veteran and multi time national number holder Barry Carsten would end up winning both 40 and 50 plus. All classes of racing would be held on this day as well as Pagoda’s mini racer program on their separate youth track. JimBull TALKS

By: Jim Bull ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A MIRACLE? I don’t know about you, but many times I find myself looking for that “massive miracle” that is going to change my life forever. I think that no matter what your heavenly beliefs are that most people are always looking for the next big thing. Whether it’s a job or relationship change, some kind of fortune that is going to fall into your life and then there is the most popular, when I hit the lotto baby. Lol Even as believers in Christ and in knowing the miracles that God has granted over the years, aren’t we always hoping and praying for God to intervene and just fix everything in our lives? Let’s look at just a few:

Acts 2: 24 - How About the Big One But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. (speaking of Jesus) Here’s my challenge to you this month: How about instead of looking for the huge miracle in our lives, we become thankful every day for the “baby miracles” in our lives. Like the fact that we wake each morning, or that we have food to eat in a world that’s starving or that God protects our racers each time they hurl themselves 100 feet through the air. I know they are easy to take for granted, but I urge you to look for the “baby miracles” that happen to you constantly as you go through life and to be thankful to the Lord above for making them happen. NE YouthJULY Regional Qualif HAPPY RAMBLERS MAMA vs MDRA 2nd Annual Shootout 1-2, 2017 In early July we headed out to the Middle Atlantic Motocross Association vs the Mason Dixon Riding Association championship shoot out race. These groups represent two of the largest motocross racing organizations in the mid-atlantic region and both have been running amateur racing programs for many years.

Todd Stith soars to three wins on the weekend.

Last year’s event was hosted by the MDRA at Doublin Gap with MAMA hosting this year’s round at the Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club. Classes needed to be blended as best as possible with a few extra added to meet both association’s needs.

Doublin Gap MXBy: Park 10 - 12, JimJune Bull Photos By: Ken Hovance and BrappM

This was it, the big show, the last gateway in the NE anyw Loretta Lynn Amateur National Championships. I know have already qualified in other regions and the South Ea printing but after this particular race.

Over 900 riders made their way to the Doublin Gap M burg, PA to take a shot for their entry ticket. I saw one the whole way from Utah to make the cut. It was a typic preparation for Tennessee, hot and dusty and great comp promoter for keeping everything running smoothly and track for this event.

Saturday started out bright and sunny but as the day wore on Mother Nature would take her toll. As the first set of motos were coming to an end a torrential storm came through destroying EZ Up’s and dropping tons of rain in just a short period of time. This put a short delay to the program and the crew there did their best to scrape the mud off the track for the second set of moto’s on the day.

Congrats to all who made it in, no matter where you call job to all those who didn’t just for making the attempt. Ma made the cut here at this event with a few winning their pictured below. Take a look at how our champions did t mxsports.com to see the complete results.

Justin Rodbell from Prince Frederick, MD went 1 - 2- 3 to win 125 (12-16) B/C and 1 - 7 - 1 to win Schoolboy 1 (12-16) B/C

Sunday we awoke to another bright hot day as the bulk of the racing was scheduled to take place. There were some excellent battles on the day especially in the youth classes. We have a ton of talent here in our area and I know some of these kids will eventually go pro. Not to take anything away from the age class guys because we still have some of the best in the business competing right here in our neck of the woods. In the end it would be the MAMA organization claiming the victory by just a few points. Points were earned for top finishes in each class then tallied at the end for an overall group award. Never without controversy the word is that it could have went either way depending on how the one day passes were tallied. Me I’m just an MX junkie trying to bring you the news and have no idea how that all went down LOL!

The Novice classes were full. Noah Rose (500) wins both

Anyhow enjoy some pics here and see tons more over at our website: www.brappmag.com. The class winners are listed here and you can see full results on both groups’ websites at: www.mamamx.com and www.mdramxracing.com B

Bryce Shelly from Telford, PA went 1 - 1 - 1 to sweep 85cc (9-12) - File Photo from Area Q

The winning group gets to keep this award for the year.

Joey O Connell (263) flies by to take to 50cc wins

The Anthracite Trail Riders, a club dedicated to promoting the AOAA, hosted the Lock Haven area, Central Mountain ATV Association, Inc., on a ride through the park. Twenty-nine machines and approximately 40 members participated in the 45 mile ride that spanned the Western and Eastern Reserves with several stops along the way for sight-seeing, lunch and getting to know other members of each club. Both organizations are non-profit and heavily involved in promoting the off-roading sport through club rides, sponsoring charity events, volunteer work and supporting legislation that expands the Pennsylvania ATV trail systems, and most recently, successfully lobbying state representatives to pass a bill that separates ATV and snowmobile registrations. The Central Mountain ATV Association has also been at the forefront of the Northcentral Pennsylvania ATV Initiative Project, which has been expanding ATV trails by hundreds of miles in the North Central region of the state, and expected to bring an economic boost to the area through more tourism and related activity. CMATVA News - A Cruise For A Cure By: Rich Wykoff

June 10, 2017 was perfect. It had rained a bit during the night which meant that conditions would be ideal for enjoying the 47 mile guided ATV ride that would launch at 9:00 am from the Flaming Foliage Festival grounds in the center of Renovo, Pennsylvania. It was the 7th year for the Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure – a fundraiser that is coordinated by the Bucktail Medical Center’s Relay For Life team and the event’s primary sponsor, the Central Mountains ATV Association. Beginning with 50 ATVs the first year and having raised $2,000 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life program, the “Cruise For A Cure” has grown in popularity and has contributed significantly to the Clinton County Relay For Life campaign each year. 2017 was the best ever topping all previous years with a total of 256 ATVs (drivers) and 142 passengers for a total of 407 participants and a record-breaking net contribution of $10,247. Year 7 was a reboot for the AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) sanctioned event. Until 2017, the event was hosted and launched from the Greater Renovo Area Heritage Park and Renovo Rail grounds located in the railyard at the western end of town. With the pending construction of a large gas powered electric plant in that area, the event organizers shifted everything into the heart of town and hit a home run. Renovo Borough Council had recently passed an ordinance allowing ATVs to be ridden on all streets except for the main highway, Route 120 that runs through town. South Renovo Borough approved ATV riding on one street that connected the ATV campground at Stellfox’s Pond with the bridge leading across the river to Renovo where all the activity was centered. This was the first year that event participants were able to ride their machines to restaurants, stores, gas stations, and the activities at Renovo Fire Hall. It was the first year that participants were able to stay at Yesterday’s Hotel and Restaurant at the west end of town and drive their ATVs from the hotel parking lot to registration and around town. The benefit of all of this activity was noticeable and significant. Added to this newfound opportunity for getting around in town was the convenience of being able to ride to the Renovo Fire Hall for the annual pancake breakfast, the chicken barbeque dinner at the end of the ride, and the newest addition to the event – a Friday night wing-fest complete with live bands playing country and classic rock. Three things bring new riders to the event each year and have drawn many back to ride since the first Cruise For A Cure in 2010. First of all, the cause is significant and very meaningful to the participants – especially those who are cancer survivors. Second, the ride is held in one of the most wooded and picturesque settings in the state. The 41 mile route loops through, around, and over township roads, forestry roads, pipeline, power line, Whiskey Springs ATV park, Quiet Oaks Campground, and privately owned forest trails. Along the route are scenic vistas that are only available through permission of the property owners. Finally, and most important, the ride is very safe due to coordination and communication between Central Mountains ATV Association, Bucktail Medical Center, Renovo, South Renovo, and Kettle Creek Fire Companies, DCNR, and Renovo police. Plans for the June 9th 2018 Cruise for a Cure will begin in January. B

The weather turned out great for the event even after Mother Nature dumped tons of rain on the location in the days prior. The trail crew of the VFTR did a great job keeping everything together with this year’s course offering miles of new trail over a varied terrain of single track, wooded trails and an open grass area. In youth racing on Saturday 38 Pee Wee racers led the charge and in the end it would be Hunter Gardner taking the O/A win over Ryder Sigety with Carter Przemelewski rounding out the podium. In the post race interview Gardner expressed how on the last lap he discovered that Sigety had managed to charge to his rear fender and it scared the crap out of him but as he heard the crowd cheering he just kept charging to hold on for the win.

Hunter Keen takes 3rd in School Boy 1

Next up over 50 Junior class racers would take to the course with Griere Moir notching another win and in Youth racing action over 80 fast Kidz hit the track with none other than Max Fernandez grabbing the win by almost exactly five minutes over second place Brayden Nolette. Both of these young men continue to dominate in their respective divisions with Max Fernandez winning every round this year in Supermini 14-15 and he also has a commanding lead in the School Boy 1 division and has notched many morning O/A victories. We weren’t able to make the adult racing on Sunday but please enjoy some images here from Shannon Bloom along with some top finishes. To see all of the results from the weekend head over to www.ecea.org and check out the web addresses at the top and the ECEA FB pages for lots more photos! Arcadia Bark Busters Northeast 24 HR Harescramble Challenge Race Tall Pines Off Road Park July 15-16, 2017 By: Nancy Sabater Pics: Tiffany Ervin Photography

We aren’t the fastest out there but we have heart, drive and a love for the sport!” This year’s team was originally slated to be a 6 person team however one of the racers, Maro Grubb, a 24yr old originally from Odessa, Ukraine who currently lives in Pennsylvania, broke her collarbone a couple weeks before the race. “It was definitely a bummer especially since Maro was fierce last year on her 2012 Honda 450! However a true team player that she is, Maro grabbed a two way radio and her camera and was an invaluable help in the pits! “The team was now down to 5 racers… “I was totally comfortable with the idea of 5… Each year I have set out for a 6 pack but due to circumstances 5 is usually what we end up with on race day. I was definitely grateful to have a couple ladies from the 2016 team onboard again that were familiar with the terrain and the race format. We were able to track walk on Friday and then set up our pit – There was a contest on best decorated pit so we pulled out all the stops!...Well Heidi went out early Saturday and did her magic and it was beautiful! Our bikes were ready and we were ready. Our plan was 2 laps each but that plan was altered as the track deteriorated. By nightfall our lights were installed on our bikes and Amanda and Valerie really enjoyed the night ride, probably because of those 10” Task Racing bar lights – they really lit the trail! The race was a blast even with some crazy laps and mishaps all the way to the checkered flag where Valerie got Silly String’d!

Returning to NE 24hr was WV’s Heidi Hawkins, a 44yr old Chief ProbaA team of six women… all different backgrounds and skill levels… tion Officer and mother of two awesome kids Heidi loves to spend time mid - twenties to mid-forties… Coming together to ride motorcycles riding trails with her husband Kenny on her KTM250xc, “Heidi doesn’t get in the dirt for 24hrs… to race much but I felt pretty confident that she would click off some laps for the team. She is highly competitive and driven and just loves to ride!” Best Idea Ever! Dirt Bike Girl Adventures has participated in the Arcadia Bark Busters Northeast 24hr Harescramble Challenge Race since its in- Samantha Kilgore a 31yr old off-road racer was also returning from last ception three years ago. This 24hr off-road race takes place at Tall Pines year’s team. In 2015 she was the VXCS Women’s Champion… A profesATV Park in Andover, New York on approximately an 11 mile course. Each sional in a Government Agency as well as a Professional Photographer year there have been different challenges – many people still talk about and Zumba Instructor from Maryland. Samantha was on a new Husqvarthe epic dust of 2016 – what you thought was horrible in the day became na FE 250 and was excited to spin laps on the new ride! “Samantha is a treacherous during the night and early morning hours as you literally could BOSS in the corners and her balance and fitness are amazing!” not see your front fender through your headlight and heavy silt. Then there was 39yr old Amanda Knapp – who has been invited to be This year many of the racers were longing for the dust – as Andover had on the team since 2015! Amanda had injured her knee pretty seriously been consistently receiving rain for weeks prior to the race with its most in an off-road race and couldn’t join the team in 2015 or 2016, however recent downpour coming a mere 12 hours before the race started. The this mother of three was super pumped to be able to participate this year! ground was saturated which made the challenging course even more Amanda is a college administrator with a Ph.D., who has blended a cachallenging especially with the slick underlying rock and a few big eleva- reer in higher education with off-road motorcycle racing to help students, tion changes. Amanda has been featured on the cover of American Motorcyclist Magazine as well as other publications. “Amanda has such a positive attitude In a 24hr race you will encounter a variety of conditions – with 143 teams and is a regular racer in the ECEA Series. She doesn’t get to ride much on the same course (one at a time – relay style) you can imagine how in between races which always amazes me how great she rides that KTM rough the course gets under prime conditions let alone when the earth 300xcw! I was so excited that she was healthy and could enjoy this event is saturated… Even the most experienced riders came in from their laps with the team!” surprised and spent! Since 2015 Dirt Bike Girl Adventures has had a 24hr team which is has been comprised of five to six women, chosen by team Valerie Horensky, a 29 year old originally from Missouri and now living in captain and founder of DBGA, Nancy Sabater. “Dirt Bike Girl Adventures Maryland – LIVES TO RIDE! At 18, Valerie’s dad got her a bike and took is all about FUN and growing the ranks of female ridership… I believe that her to her first harescramble race. However in-between colligate soccer, you grow ridership by participation, leadership and encouragement. This an engineering degree and a job working as an oilfield engineer on drilling team continues to do this - I know we make a difference because other rigs in the Rockies as well as offshore overseas there really wasn’t much girls and women that are on the sidelines are so supportive and excited time for her to race a full series. In 2016 she was able to put it together folto see us out there. When they see our team they can see themselves… lowing the GNCC Series and earning a 3rd in Women’s Amateur and 1st

Nancy Sabater the 47yr old Team Captain and founder of Dirt Bike Girl Adventures… In 2011 Nancy was honored by the American Motorcyclist Association when they named her Motorcyclist of the Year for her grassroots activism efforts fighting the (2008) CPSIA Lead Law. Reflecting On The Team… “I love the whole idea of the “Team” – its unique and super fun! Getting your friends together and making new ones along the way is pretty special. I’m clearly slow moving but I’m out there and I do my best to stay out of the faster riders way. Even my husband is out there with his premiere team – I’m thinking “Oh gosh… I just don’t want to be in anyone’s way” But I listen for revving engines and I keep digging, trying to put in safe efficient laps for my team. Doing this race and races like it are what I want to do – its those special ones that you remember – the ones that you shared with your girlfriends. My hope is that more ladies get to experience the type of exhilarations you get with off-road riding and racing. As my friend Heidi says… Its Always An Adventure! This team shared so many epic stories of the course – we could write a book… I hope that people will go to the website DirtBikeGirlAdventures. com to read more and get involved in the sport! In the end collectively our team raced nearly 200 miles in 24hrs that’s 18 laps.! Each one of us contributing whatever we could to further our position. We finished 1st in Women’s and 98th overall out of 143 Teams! It was brutal out there… I am so proud and grateful for this team of friends! I hope to see more women’s teams next year on the line. They also offer a Premiere Women’s Class so there are classes for all levels!
