Captains Quarters Hey all - it’s great to be back. Some of you will know us from the days gone by as a local motocross newspaper publisher. Others will know us as the group that started that off road magazine in Pa. And some of you don’t have a clue who we are, and all of the above are ok. I do know this, we sure are glad to be back and we hope that we can live up to your expectations. The last few weeks have been a whirlwind as we learned the news of the local off road pub shutting down and making a decision as a family to launch this new project called BrappMag without delay. Many of you that know us embraced the idea and have been waiting patiently to see what’s in our pages. Then there are others that said hey, what’s this all about. Maybe some just shrugged their shoulders and don’t really have a care. Again, either way is fine. It’s our job to win you as an audience and give you something that you can’t wait to read each month, week or day. A big job yes, but a challenge we are willing to take on. So BrappMag, what is it you ask? Brapp will be a monthly printed publication that offers you both off road competition and recreational riding coverage. We hope to be your source for the faces of our sport, for the places you can ride, for the recreational events you attend and for the racing coverage that we all love. We will be a free publication that prints each month and we will be an online frenzy of happenings in our industry each and every day. We will reach out over Pennsylvania and much of the mid-Atlantic region. Matter of fact - the sky is the limit, you the readers, contributors and advertisers will guide us to wherever we need to be. Excited yet? We hope that you are. We ask that you please look through our pages each month and that you keep an eye on our website and social media pages each week. The difference between us and every other publication out there is that we are out there and we are out there to talk about and promote you, our readers. Whats up fellow riders! Are you looking for an ATV/UTV event to call home twice a year? After reading this article, you will find that Tar Hollow is the ride you’ve been searching for. It’s been going strong for the past three years, and the creators have come up with new ideas for every event to challenge the riders. The various challenges range from a kids’ ride to some crazy hill climbs that provide ATV riders with some beautiful mountain views.

Then there are the roads leading to the event? Well, that’s fun in and of itself! When you arrive at Tar Hollow, there are cones lined up so riders can park. Afterwards, riders head over to the sign-in area. They have shirts and stickers for sale and one of the best parts about riding here is the raffle. The raffle is held prior to every ATV/UTV event to support needy people. For this event, the raffle raised money for Mark McGraw, a young man who unexpectedly lost his life. Our prayers go out to him and his family. After signing in, riders are directed to the tent section and the camper section. I rolled over to the tent section, where I set up for the night. Afterwards, I offloaded my quad and had some time to just relax before the night ride began. One of my favorite things to do before rides is to meet and talk to other off-road enthusiasts. At

this event, I met a guy named Greg Thomas and his daughter Sophia, Greg is the founder of the Muddy Mic Podcast. He is known for talking about everything and anything to do with off-roading on his show. I also got to see the kids ride starting and led by Tar Hollow crew member Cassie, She’s 8 years old and riding for four years now. The night ride for adults started around 8:00pm. We all gathered around for a brief talk before we headed out onto the trails. This was Tar Hollow’s second night ride and there were about 84 riders all excited to ride through mountains in the dark. Unfortunately I couldn’t continue onto the trails because a buddy’s quad had broken down. Instead, we headed back to the camp to see if we could get his quad working for Sunday’s event. About an hour later, the skies opened up and poured on us…while the riders were still out on the trails. It was definitely an adventure for them! Then everyone returned to camp for the night, I was told that all had a blast on that night ride, even though the last hour was spent navigating through some heavy rain. The next morning was the official Tar Hollow ride. Before riding, I got ready by heading over to the Cook Shack for some breakfast to get my gears going. Yummy! Then, it was go time. We jumped onto the bikes and headed towards the trails. The first thing I came across was

a mud hole, which I went through at full speed! We continued heading down the trails that were marked with different colored arrows. The arrows assisted the riders by directing them towards which trails they would like to take. This one hero loop was crazy…and the rain made getting up the hill more of an adventure than usual because of its slick, rocky slate. This rocky, steep, curved hill goes up, then hits a flat section, then goes right back into a hill before arriving at the very top. Here is another reason why I enjoy attending these events: its twenty-two miles of varying elevations, hero loops, technical sections, and my personal favorite, the mud sections! Tar Hollow is a two-day weekend event filled with nothing but fun!

He started riding dirt bikes when he was six years old and he got his first motorcycle, a PW50 on his 6th birthday. He road for almost a year when friends of his family Paul Ritz and Dave Clemons who have children who race introduced Brandon into the world of ECEA Fast Kidz Championship Racing and he loves it. Since Brandon started racing the ECEA Fast Kidz Championship in 2014 he is progressing very well and at our last event the RORR Harescramble he came in 3rd place and has been placing in the top 10 at each race in his class. Great job Brandon. I can see that as you grow so will your racing !! If you ask Brandon why he likes riding his response is “I like racing because of the chance to ride at different tracks and spending time with his racing family and friends. I love to have fun while becoming a better rider and making memories.” Really what more can be said, he truly has that passion to ride and race. Way to go Brandon!

Brapp Mag would like to feature your next ECEA Spot Light rider, Cate Nash. Cate has been racing for three years and in those three years I have seen her grow into being an excellent rider. When speaking to Cate she compared the extent of how much she loves to race. If given a choice to race for a day or to spend a day at Great Adventure, her answer was racing. She gets straight A’S in school and puts her studies before her riding. Just recently I have gotten to see her nail the hole shot in the Junior Girls class at the RORR Harescramble. Way to go Cate! She is also in 2nd place over all in her class for this year and has not missed an ECEA event putting her in the 100% Club to date. students how far you travel in one second while driving at a rate of 1, 10, 20, and 30 MPH followed by the distance in two seconds at 30 MPH. This really opened up some eyes when the students could actually see how far one travels in two seconds. Finally Shawn did a demonstration on head injuries by hitting a watermelon with an ATV. With 12 groups they went through a lot of melons.

Guns, ATVs & Bears It Must Be the Bedford Youth Field Day Oh My! By: Denny Mann

On June 6th the PaOHV crews setup the ATV Simulator at our first Youth Field Day sponsored by Bedford County Sportsman’s and the Pennsylvania Game Commission. We were invited the by Buchanan State Forest Rangers Shawn Lynn and Greg Eitner who have done ATV Safety Training at the event for years. The event was held between Bedford and Everett Pennsylvania along PA Route 326 on the Bedford Sportsman’s grounds. What a beautiful location nestled in the mountains with their own lake,

swimming area, target range, and skeet range. The event consisted of a dozen training options lasting 30 minutes each. We split the ATV time slot with the DCNR. PaOHV took the first 20 minutes. We spent the time discussing the dangers involved with ATV operation and how to reduce risk by being a defensive rider. Michael Benes reviewed safety gear and demonstrated helmet fit. Then after a quick lesson on rider posture from Denny Mann all of

the students rode the simulator and demonstrated what they knew about making turns and riding on hills. Then the Rangers spent 10 minutes discussing an accident that happened a few years back in Perry County where a young rider had died of brain trauma while riding an ATV. They had the actual ATV from this accident courtesy of Progressive Insurance and Greg did a great job describing the incident. Then Shawn used a string with knots to show the

A picnic style lunch was served to everyone free of charge. During lunch kids could participate in two demonstrations. The first was a demonstration of a dog retrieving duck decoys from the lake. Then Game Commission brought in a live bear that they had caught for relocation. Pennsylvania has many sportsmen’s clubs and conservation groups stepping up to introduce people to hunting and the outdoors. Each event offers a brief introduction to many different, enjoyable outdoor recreational activities. The Game Commission often participates in these events, staffing a station or two. The Truth behind your “WINGS” By: Corporal Kaster If Ryan Dungy drinks it, it must make you faster…WRONG! So many of us have seen all these great athletes get on that podium and slug down a fresh Energy Drink. Well here is the real truth… ITS WATER. Those athletes will never put that stuff into their bodies. Here is why! Got that 2:30 feeling? Need a quick pick up before your next moto? Here is some information to help you rethink your next drink! Many Energy drink companies have these crazy claims of Energy using all of these crazy big terms like guarana, taurine, ginseng, L-carnitine, inositol, choline, and sugars. This is because the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has NO regulations over these particular “ingredients”. The FDA regulates caffeine in drinks such as soda to 65 mg per 12 oz., however they do not regulate Energy Drinks. Since the FDA does not regulate these companies they have free will to make claims of efficacy for such ingredients. What it boils down to is a complete Caffeine and Sugar High. The amounts of caffeine in these drinks are usually double or triple the amount of a soda or Ice-tea. The issue with this, aside from the major health risk associated with large amount of caffeine such as heart palpitations, rapid heart rate, chest pains, and nausea, is the “crash”. The “crash” is what happens once you body loses this caffeine high, often resulting in a much more intense tired feeling. This is due to your Blood sugar rapidly decreasing. So what options do we have? First and Foremost is WATER! Water keeps us hydrated. Hydration allows our bodies to absorb nutrients from the food we eat. If we are dehydrated our bodies cannot metabolize food in order to deliver the important aspect our bodies need. The best way to figure out how much water you need is to divide your body weight in half. That’s how many oz. of water you should be drinking a day, plus 30 oz. per hour of exercise. Most people need 8-10 glasses of water a day without exercise! The next is our food choices. Although the moto dogs and cheeseburgers are delicious, they offer very little in the way of nutrition and energy. Be sure to bring some healthy snacks with you such as Trail Mix, soybeans (edamame), quinoa, Local Honey, and Goji berries. On long runs or rides I prefer Almonds, honey and dried cranberries. Most trail mixes offer a very good combination of fats, fibers and proteins. These are the things your body needs. There are also many companies out there that offer great all natural/organic energy snacks such as Gummies made from honey and Snack Bars. I know you heard it 100 times before but Breakfast is the MOST important meal of the day! A well balanced breakfast gives your body the jumpstart it needs to run all day! Eggs are naturally high in B vitamins. These vitamins are critical in turning food into energy and also vitamin D which is very important for strong bones! Lets not forget that they are an essential source of proteins for muscle building and even more important muscle recovery after an intense training session. (Want to cut back on the fat, Try one whole egg and 2-3 egg whites for a great source of morning energy) So yes it would be much easier if these false promises made by Energy drink manufactures were true. But take it from someone who changed his diet, lost 60 lbs., and overcame many health issues. A change in our diets is the most effective way to an energized day, NOT some miracle drink or potion! Ride on!

ATV Cruise for a Cure CMATVA Written by: Jessica Welshans for the Lock Haven Express

Hundreds of riders take Renovo by storm to fight cancer in Renovo, Pa. Thundering through the street of the small town, more than 238 ATV’s and UTV’s made a statement. “Let’s fight and cruise for a cure for cancer.” As the town lap ended, so began the Central Mountains ATV Association along with Relay for Life team from Bucktail Medical Center held the Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure on June 6th. Into the state forests of Sproul and the Susquehannock, crossing Leidy and Chapman Townships and along the Tom Charles ATV trail more than 60 miles was put in by 335 riders. The Cruise is designed to use roads and trails that are not open for riding at any other time, and involves coordination with private property owner, municipalities, state agencies and volunteer organizations. More than $7,500.00 was raised for the Clinton County Relay for Life. This is the ride’s fifth year and perhaps one of the most unique Relay for Life events in the state. Residents from Renovo turned out to wave, some with signs supporting the riders and their cause. Around town, painted windows with the district purple sent positive messages to everyone who traveled through the town. The event is “family-safe”, which means experienced guides from Central Mountains ATV Association rode in the front and back of each group. Some machines were decorated with small memorial flags or signs, showing who the riders were they were supporting or in memory that were affected by cancer. Opening ceremonies were given by Clinton County Commissioner Jeff Snyder, Relay for Life representative Shane Launer, Bucktail Medical Center administrator Tim Reeves, and the benediction by Martha Sykes. In corporation with the Bucktail Medical Center Relay for Life Committee, Renovo Fire Company and Quit Oaks Campground, the Central Mountains ATV Association was able to make the event possible. The event is sanctioned by the American Motorcyclists Association. Agencies like DCNR, PADOT, Kettle Creek Fire Company and the Boy Scout Troops also helped out during the days events. Vendors were also on-hand at the Greater Renovo Heritage Park which was donated again this year to launch the great event.

Children under the age of 8 or over age 16 are not eligible to receive the certificate, but if your rider is between the ages of 8 and 16 they are eligible to take the course and receive the certificate. Proper safety gear and safe machine are required to take the course. By contacting your local instructor, you can receive all the information you need to ensure your child has the proper gear to complete this course. Completing the course and receiving the certificate provides the knowledge and skill to operate the machines in various manners necessary to ride trails with confidence, not to mention that most children think its really cool to get their “license” in the mail!

Registration, Titling and Insuring Your ATV Who must register and title? All ATVs in Pennsylvania, except ATVs used solely for business or agricultural purposes, need to be registered and titled with DCNR. ATVs used in Pennsylvania must be registered and titled with DCNR’s Snowmobile/ATV Section. The ATV registration and titling fees are NOT user fees for the privilege of using trails on state-owned land. The fees provide funding to administer the program, maintain trails in DCNR-managed parks and forests, and provide grants to profit and non-profit organizations for developing additional riding opportunities.

Two Types of Registrations Apply: • Registration For ATVS used anywhere off of your own property or property leased by you, such as designated State Forest trails. $20 fee every two years

• Limited Registration For ATVs used solely on your own land or land leased by you. Free registration No expiration, unless ownership of vehicle changes.

Plates and Decals An ATV owner will be issued a registration plate for the vehicle. An expiration sticker to be affixed to the plate will be issued for standard registrations.

Liability Insurance If you are using your ATV solely on land owned or leased by you, you are not required to get liability insurance. All other riders must carry liability insurance. Proof of that insurance must be carried with you when you ride. There are no minimum requirements or coverage standards established by DCNR or the Snowmobile/ATV Law for the liability insurance. These summer season runs from the Friday before Memorial Day through the last full weekend in September. The winter season runs from the day following the last day of the regular or extended antlerless deer season as established by the Game Commission through the following April 1. There are some trails that remain closed until after the late muzzleloader season. Please check the forest district web pages for current access advisories on when trails open for the winter season. _______________________________________

1 Pike County - Burnt Mills- 7 miles of summer and winter trail. Access is from a parking area on Route 402 one mile south of Porters Lake. Registered Class II ATV’s are permitted on this trail that are less than 58” in width and less than 1,200 pounds. During the winter season the trail system is expanded to 42 miles by using some dirt roads that are gated during the winter. Access to these are from parking lots located at Big Flat along Shippensburg Road about 1-1/4 miles north of its intersection with Route 233 and on Piney Mountain along Bendersville Road south of Pine Grove Furnace State Park. ATV trail season runs from the Friday before Memorial Day through the last Sunday in September. Winter season is from December 20 to April 1. Pagoda MC Mini Madness D6 Mainline Series - July 18-19, 2015 By: Brapp Staff Our second weekend back we landed at another track that we love so much. My son raced here a lot when he was younger and we’ve always been welcomed here with open arms. Pagoda MC in Birdsboro, Pa was the host for Round #6 of the District 6 Mainline Series sponsored by Evolution Powersports. It was another scorcher as we headed to the track and another great turnout of racers. With over 400 entries on the day the racing action was how you say - Red Hot. We spent a bit of time on Pagodas main course but it was the Mini Track down over the hill that attracted me on this day. I’m not sure why, but some days I just like the slower pace of the little bikes. God knows I love kids and without these weekend warriors and their loyal parents, our sport doesn’t have much of a chance.

Mini Track Racers Rock Back on the big track the rest of the racers were bar to bar and going hard. Some of the fastest guys around were out today and getting ready for the big show coming up in Tennessee. The weather sure proved worthy. All’s I can say is wow, what a great day for a comeback. It has been about a year and a half since we’ve attended an event and I’m not sure how long since we’ve been to Doublin. I do want to start by thanking everyone for the hearty welcome. Victory in Jesus Ministries kicked off the morning with a message for the racers followed by the riders meeting where five free classes were given away for the next MDRA event at Happy Ramblers and two people won $50 gas cards. Then it was off to the track for practice and the first motos of the day. As things were getting started I noticed the track changes and how good the soil looked. I recalled track owner Rod Yentzer talking about all the sawdust that they’ve been adding in throughout the year and as I watched him prepare the track for the first gate drop I noticed the tiller bottomed out in the dirt. As the racing progressed I noticed more lines than I remembered in recent years at Doublin so I started talking to some of the racers. Everyone had good things to say about the track and all agreed the saw dust had helped greatly and that the track flowed well. It reminded me of years past there, when Doublin was known for their great dirt.

Rassa and Dickson battled hard all day with Rassa winning 40 A and Dickson taking Plus 35 Anyhow on to the racing; we saw many faces from before and many new as well. We saw guys like Jeremy Cook still out there tearing it up and Senior guys like Jay Rassa and Gaylon Dickson putting on a great show for all there. We saw 50cc racers like Kyler Fryfogle and Braydon Gladfelter charging hard on the day and 14 racers signed up for the 50 plus class (that’s years - not cc’s). The mini classes were strong with lots of entries which gives a great outlook for the sport with several racers notching multiple wins for the day. Since 1985 - The Blair-Bedford Dirt Racers, Inc. is a club of racers and racing enthusiasts that run dirt drags on a 500-foot, clay-based track located on Rte. 867 between Bakers Summit and New Enterprise in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. They race everything from mini-mini motorcycles and ATV’s to nitro-fueled top fuel bikes and quads. With over 60 different classes to run, there is a class for everyone featuring everything from bone stock machines to the completely wild. Speaking of wild, the track record for 500 feet is a 4.47 second run at 142 mph set in 2012, anyone want to take a shot at that? All interested dirt drag racers are welcome and you do not have to be a member of the club to compete. All racing is heads up using a double elimination format to get you to the finals. Time slips with reaction time, elapsed time and mph are provided for all riders including mini-mini using a Race America timing system. They run about 10 or so races every year and always seem to have a special event for each event run. Today’s special awards featured a mini wheel shootout with cash paid to the top riders.

Gates here open at 10:30 with racing beginning about 1:30 and going well into the night. We attended this event with little notice and weren’t prepared to stay to the end. Racing typically goes well into the night as every racer we spoke with on this day said it doesn’t get good til after the sun goes down. We apologize to all as we would have loved to catch some action under the lights - maybe next time. All the club members and racers welcomed us with open arms and we thank you for that.

Over 120 riders came out for this round of the Raceway Park youth motocross and quad series. Special guest, Ronnie Stewart from RSR Racing was on hand to sign autographs and greet the kids. It was a fabulous day devoted to some incredibly fast youth riders. The (7-8) 50cc and (4-8) open classes gave us quite a show between Jaden Palmer (804) and Tyler Devers (22). Palmer came through with the wins and Devers grabbed both second place spots and a fourth in the 65cc (7-9) class. Happy Birthday Ty!! Chuck Rostien won the 85cc (12-15) class and Super Mini.

ECEA Mountain Top A.M.A. National Harescramble Hosted by VFTR

This season of ECEA racing is in full swing and is really heating up. With the latest event taking place in Mahoney City, Pa. and hosted by Valley Forge Trail Riders. This event took place on July 18th - 19th and was the first National Harescramble of two that the ECEA will be hosting this season out of the 12 races that will be run. The Valley Forge Trail Riders put a lot of hard work into this is event offering some really great trails for both Saturdays and Sunday’s races. Saturday the weather was great for our Fast Kidz, a little hot, but nothing that the KIdz couldn’t handle especially since it rained on Friday night helping to keep the dust under control. In talking to some of the Fast Kidz they said the trails where great and they had a lot of fun. Some of the highlights found the 50cc over all win going to Kenneth Held, Logan Ritz and Austin Tsakanikas. The Junior top three where Joey Rainone, Gavin Williams, and Western Greenwood. The overall for the youth was Landon Bruner, Jeremey Biggs, and Mike Beeler. The Cycle Playground holeshot awards went to Konner Plummer, Gavin Williams, and Mark Cimino. The 100% Goggle hole shot winners were Gavin Olderberg with his very first hole shot win since he

started racing a year ago, Joey Rainone, and Mark Cimino. Congratulations to each one of you and to every ECEA Fast Kidz, you all did spectacular! As Sunday rolled in and the morning race hit the line the temperatures started to rise. The heat was expected to reach a high of close to a 100. The trails for the morning race were extremely slick which made it very technical for the riders. With the overall win going to Matthew Davis, Johnny Manera, and Nathan Joseph and for the Womens class Shyann Phelps, Dianne Fitgerald and Victoria Rawden. The Main event was up next with a slightly different trail due to the conditions from the previous race. VFTR thought it would be best to make some adjustments to the course leaving the trails for the main event rocky, technical, and flowing. Taking the overall win for the main event was Tegan Temple followed by Jesse Groemm in second and Ryder Lafferty in third. The Women’s class saw Annelisa Davis take the win followed by Samantha Bird and Claudia Danielewicz. The Valley Forge Trail Riders put on a spectacular event. The ECEA and all the clubs put a lot of hard work in to pull these events off. In This event like all

That brings us to our next event… the 40th running of the Moonshine Enduro is coming on September 20th in Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill County, PA. The Valley Forge Trail Riders have teamed with High Mountain Dirt Riders to further improve the event. The team says there is even a junior enduro planned on Saturday afternoon for the youngsters in attendance. Perhaps VFTR’s longtime trail boss and ‘head brewmaster’ of Moonshine says it best…. “Just want to take a minute to help you work up a thirst for some mighty fine ‘Moonshine’ served up by those fine fellas at VFTR and HMDR on September 20, 2015. It is the 40th annual Moonshine Enduro and it’s fixin’ to be the best one yet. We’re custom blending our Moonshine this year to give all riders just the right challenge with a goal of sending everyone home with a grin so big your wife will think you were up to no good. We’ve incorporated course splits to give the C riders a 60-proof ride, the B riders an 80-proof ride, while the AA/A get the full 100-proof they want and enjoy. Boy howdy it’s gonna be a hoot! In our never ending effort to improve our event and give the riders the best day in the saddle possible, we have really refined the course over last year. We’ve eliminated the looong layover at the gas stop, instead giving the ‘split’ riders a nice ride on fun two-trackers and woods roads while the A’s and B’s take the hard way in the woods.
