Captains Quarters Merry Christmas everybody, and I say that because it is the holiday that we observe here in the Brapp Mag household. If you celebrate something different we respect that however and wish you the best of the holidays as well. I guess one thing we do know for sure and that is winter is upon us here in the Northeast. As I write this it is in the 30’s outside and the wind is blowing just as hard. I can only think about our friends in T-shirts at the Mini O’s. I hope you all are well and please enjoy that as long as you can. I’m not sure how long this cold spell is going to last. If you read in our previous issue the Old Farmers Almanac is predicting a long cold winter here in our parts. December kind of leaves us high and dry here as far as the racing is concerned. MAMA crowns their champions in early December and that’s followed by two weeks of indoor flat track racing at the Cow Palace in Timonium, MD. After that we have the holidays then nothing until we go harescramble racing in early January in MD followed by Ice Racing in Reading Pa and some Arenacross in Baltimore. I guess the good news is shortly after that it’s Motorama Time again and we’re right back at it.

After much research, soul searching and just some good old common sense we have made the decision to discontinue printing and become a DIGITAL ONLY publication beginning in March of 2017. Many of you are already reading it that way and it will allow us to lift the limitations of content space due to high print costs while making it more affordable for our advertisers and easier for you to read. Launching soon on the Android and Apple Stores will be our Free Phone App which will allow you to click right into our digital issue anytime you want. You’ll be able to find issue specific content that will be nowhere else on the web, link directly to photos and videos and shop with all of our advertisers with just a few clicks. I know some of you may be thinking - what if I’m on the cover or my child is in your pages. PR3 Enduro 240 - MSRP $4799 Yes - believe it or not the Brapp Captain does some riding of his own. Not like in years gone by but I still enjoy a great trail ride now and then. There are a number of reasons why I don’t spend as much time in the saddle anymore, with one of them being the tall stature of the bikes these days. My 5’ 8” frame coupled with my 50 plus years of abuse on this planet sometimes makes it difficult or lets say un-enjoyable to mount up and go like I used too. That’s OK - laugh if you will. But I’d bet there are a number of you out there that may have the same problem. Another big struggle and this one will get me in trouble I’m sure, is the cost of some of the new machinery these days. I believe the manufactures in trying to always create a better product have sometimes priced themselves right out of the market.

Enter the made in Europe AJP PR3 - a 240cc air cooled powerhouse that sits low to the ground while still offering optimal suspension travel and ground clearance with a price that a grandpa like me can afford. NEW 16” Rear Wheel – Down in size by 1 inch from our older 17” rear wheel, this new 16” wheel allows for a larger selection of tire choices, plus lowers our seat height slightly as well!
I loved this bike as it made plenty of power to make it fun to ride while being able to pull the hills and work its way thru the tight stuff. I never once struggled with the bike being top heavy or too tall when having to come to an abrupt stop on the side of a hill or in a gully and the brakes All AJP’s can be tagged for street and Enduro use worked fantastic, lets just say, who knew that big creek was there as I was powering out of the woods. The strong disc brakes both front and rear stopped me on a dime and kept me high and dry all day. The electric start was a bonus and I really enjoyed riding this bike. More good news - the lineup doesn’t stop with the PR 3. If you are taller in stature or like riding the taller frame for just a few hundred dollars more you can get the PR 4. The main difference is going to an 18” rear with a 21” front wheel set up.

The under the seat fuel tank along with the smaller wheel size and included lowering link make this machine a great choice for an old guy like me or even a youth rider looking for his or her first shot at a full chassis bike.

ATHLETES: THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A PERFECT DIET October 19, 2016 Too often athletes go overboard when trying to eat healthfully. They may put themselves under strict calorie limits, cut out certain ingredients, or even avoid entire food groups in the hopes of reaching their performance goals. By choosing nutritious snacks, you’ll be able to ensure you are providing your body everything it needs to rebuild, repair, and refuel. For peak performance, athletes need a balance of carbohydrate, protein, and fat. Carbohydrates like oats, rice, and sweet potatoes fuel exercise and give your muscles energy. Protein choices like meat, seafood, and eggs build and repair muscle tissue. Sources of good fats such as nuts and olive oil support metabolism and sustained energy.
The athlete who makes healthful food choices most of the time will beat out an athlete who goes to an extreme trying to achieve the “perfect” diet all the time. One reason is that motivation is fleeting. Going all out, whether in training or diet, can lead to exhaustion and burnout. Sharing a meal out with friends or having an occasional treat shouldn’t make you feel like you’re cheating. Food choices should be considered in the context of your whole diet. For example, if your diet averages 3,000 calories per day, you can enjoy a treat of around about 300 calories most days without a second thought, since a 300-calorie treat represents only 10 percent of your daily calories. Performance-minded athletes sometimes lose sight of a balanced approach to eating and become too focused on achieving the perfect athlete’s diet. When an athlete follows an overly restricted diet, they run the risk of making a negative impact on performance or creating a lifestyle that can lead to exhaustion and burnout. By focusing on meeting calorie needs, spreading meals and snacks throughout the day, and choosing healthy foods most of the time, athletes can support performance in a sustainable way. Early November found us at Premier Events in Shippensburg, Pa to help the 2016 MDRA Champions celebrate 25,000 reasons to race the MDRA Series. That’s $25,000, the cash value that MDRA racers earned by competing in this long running series. Between expert payout, amateur MDRA Bucks, gas cards and free classes given away at every round, product giveaways, Rocky Mountain Gift Cards, practice day discounts, etc. The list goes on and on let alone the great competition you’ll find at this series. Brian and I would like to announce with much love and heavy hearts that we are hanging our helmets up at the conclusion of this season. There are a hundred reasons we could give to explain why but just simply said… It is time. We have for many years devoted our time, love, and passion to the youth of this sport and in turn we were blessed by being part of so many families’ weekend adventures. We have formed life long bonds of friendship that if not for this sport we would have missed out on. Every single hug and smile we received or gave was sincere and treasured in our hearts. The NEOC has only been half of the years we spent trying to make our small part in this world a better place. As we all know, life dictates the way our path winds around the mountains we climb and we couldn’t be more blessed then having all of you take that walk with us, especially when the climb was steep and full of obstacles. We have seen and shared many life experiences, happy times, sad moments, accomplishments, devastation, new life brought into this world and many angels taken from it…… The hurt and sadness you feel for those you care about is soothed by the love and friendship from those very same people. The good, the bad, the ugly and the beautiful is what life is made up of, however, it is up to you on which one you choose to seek out and embrace. Of all the things we promoted over the years please remember this one; it’s always about the faces not the races. The love you shared and how it made them feel is what they will remember not the finish. We cherish the friendship and every hug that was freely given to us over the last 20 years. Our life has been rich with emotion and passion that will last a life time…… This isn’t goodbye but until we hug again…. after all, if you know the Hartem Family, then you know we don’t sit idle or watch the parade go by. It was an example of two Pennsylvania-based ATV clubs exhibiting their fraternal spirit and love of riding.

The Anthracite Trail Riders, a club dedicated to promoting the AOAA, hosted the Lock Haven area, Central Mountain ATV Association, Inc., on a ride through the park. Twenty-nine machines and approximately 40 members participated in the 45 mile ride that spanned the Western and Eastern Reserves with several stops along the way for sight-seeing, lunch and getting to know other members of each club. ATR and CMATV presidents, Warren Remig and Henry Sorgen IV, respectively, were on hand to ensure members had a great time on the trails. Both organizations are non-profit and heavily involved in promoting the off-roading sport through club rides, sponsoring charity events, volunteer work and supporting legislation that expands the Pennsylvania ATV trail systems, and most recently, successfully lobbying state representatives to pass a bill that separates ATV and snowmobile registrations. The Central Mountain ATV Association has also been at the forefront of the Northcentral Pennsylvania ATV Initiative Project, which has been expanding ATV trails by hundreds of miles in the North Central region of the state, and expected to bring an economic boost to the area through more tourism and related activity. Although the ATR club hovers around 60 members, primarily because they were organized to promote the development of the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area, they are active with many other organizations, such as the 1200-plus member CMATV, who have taken the lead in the state’s ATV tourism and economic development on a much larger scale. Tricker got a mid pack start in the first moto After a rainout forced the rescheduling of the ninth round of the Women’s Motocross Championship due to the effects of Hurricane Matthew, the series moved to New Jersey on October 29th to New Jersey Motosports Park Field of Dreams Motocross track where Obermeyer Suzuki’s Mackenzie Tricker went 1-1 to grab her first overall victory of the season. Cold but nearly perfect conditions greeted the WMX series as Stone/Fly/Scott/ Cycle Shack North Yamaha rider Kaitlyn Morrow grabbed the holeshot to start moto one, followed by Kawasaki-mounted Shelby Rolen and Tricker. Tricker was disappointed in her start but made up for it quickly. “It was a concrete pad and normally I’m pretty good on those but I guess I spun up a bit and was a little slow off the line, but third wasn’t bad getting into the first turn,” said Tricker. Tricker was quick to pass Rolen to move into second, although it took a couple of laps before she was able to make a pass on the leader Morrow.

“Kaitlyn was guarding her lines, as I expected she would, but once I got by I was able to pull a quick gap,” said Tricker. “I felt like I had some better lines than Kaitlyn and I thought she would pick up on them once I went by but lucky enough I was a couple of seconds faster than her and I was able to pull away, so everything in the first moto went really good and I was able to get the win.”

ATV trail season runs from the Friday before Memrial Day through the last Sunday in September. Winter season is from December 20 to April 1. Children under the age of 8 or over age 16 are not eligible to receive the certificate, but if your rider is between the ages of 8 and 16 they are eligible to take the course and receive the certificate. Proper safety gear and safe machine are required to take the course. By contacting your local instructor, you can receive all the information you need to ensure your child has the proper gear to complete this course. Completing the course and receiving the certificate provides the knowledge and skill to operate the machines in various manners necessary to ride trails with confidence, not to mention that most children think its really cool to get their “license” in the mail!

Registration, Titling and Insuring Your ATV Who must register and title?
All ATVs in Pennsylvania, except ATVs used solely for business or agricultural purposes, need to be registered and titled with DCNR. ATVs used in Pennsylvania must be registered and titled with DCNR’s Snowmobile/ATV Section. The ATV registration and titling fees are NOT user fees for the privilege of using trails on state-owned land. The fees provide funding to administer the program, maintain trails in DCNR-managed parks and forests, and provide grants to profit and non-profit organizations for developing additional riding opportunities.
Two Types of Registrations Apply: • Registration
For ATVS used anywhere off of your own property or property leased by you, such as designated State Forest trails. $20 fee every two years
• Limited Registration
For ATVs used solely on your own land or land leased by you. Free registration No expiration, unless ownership of vehicle changes.
Plates and Decals
An ATV owner will be issued a registration plate for the vehicle. An expiration sticker to be affixed to the plate will be issued for standard registrations.
Liability Insurance
If you are using your ATV solely on land owned or leased by you, you are not required to get liability insurance. All other riders must carry liability insurance. Proof of that insurance must be carried with you when you ride. There are no minimum requirements or coverage standards established by DCNR or the Snowmobile/ATV Law for the liability insurance.

The Pennsylvania State Snowmobile Association held their 26th Annual powersports show the last weekend in October at the Lebanon Valley Exposition Center & Fairgrounds. ATV’s, UTV’s, motorcycles, watercraft, trailers, trucks, gear, clothing, parts, accessories, travel and more were all under one roof! In addition to all the vendors, the show also included an ATV/garden tractor pull, 4x4 truck contest, accident scene management presentations, vintage powersports show, used powersports corral and a youth snowmobile safety course.

I’ve been attending this show for years and I would say that this was the best attended show I’ve been at for years. It reminded me of the crowds they used to get back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. I think the only thing that could make it better in future years would be a stronger presence from the off road side of the sport. Hint, hint.

The Potomac Vintage Riders (PVR) will host their annual Bike Show and Swap meet the day after their year-end awards banquet for their Vintage Hare Scrambles Series. This show attracts thousands of attendees looking for those hard to find parts and those bikes from days gone by that so many of us still love. They also host a Vintage Bike Show at the event which last year attracted over 125 entries. I spent hours in that show area and every time I turned around I spied another piece that I once owned or wish I would have. It was eye candy galore for the over 30 crowd.

The Gene Kaczka Family - MAMA Racers and MX Lovers
With the future of Brapp Mag going all digital in the spring of the New Year we will be able to do more rider and family profiles in our pages. When Gene’s wife Courtney reached out to me a few weeks ago I thought this would be the perfect place to start. The Kaczka family is the pure definition of a home grown motocross family. They’ve lived and breathed the sport together since the very beginning. Racing in the Mid Atlantic Motocross Association or MAMA for short, Gene began competing at the age of 18 just a few short years before he and his wife Courtney married. As a matter of fact they’ve been at the track together since then and have both contributed greatly to the sport over the years. Gene took a short break when their kids were little but it didn’t take long for their love of racing motocross to drive them back to the track. Over the
years he has won quite a few championships racing with MAMA. He’s competed in many disciplines of racing and has even built his own custom chopper from the ground up. Gene serves as the family mechanic while winning championships, serving on the MAMA board and working security at the track. He is retiring his position this season but guarantees he’ll be around in the coming years to give his racing buddies a run for their money. Daughter Kaitlyn Kaczka age 21 races Womens Open class and won the Maryland State Girls class in 2010 and has placed in the top five in MAMA girls or women’s classes every year since then. She has been trophy coordinator for MAMA for the last two years even while attending college but is also retiring her official position after this season. Kaitlyn is getting perfect attendance for MAMA this year even while attending college and a job and she won MAMAs first ever college scholarship. Son Colby Kaczka age 18 races College Boy, 250 and Open B. He is winning the College Boy division and taking 2nd in 250 and Open B for MAMA this year after winning Open C last season. Colby started racing at the age of six and has raced 50s 60s, 85s, Supermini, Schoolboy and now big bikes. He is getting perfect attendance this year for MAMA and is a senior in High School planning to major in mechanical engineering. Non racer mom - Courtney Kaczka has been married to Gene now 29 years and has raced with him since they were both 18. She’s worked scoring races at the old Middleford Speedway back in the day and went to the first Pro National at Budds Creek. Courtney’s love for racing and the race community is as much as the rest of the family. She is a school teacher and a librarian and finally raced the Moms race at Happy Ramblers in November pulling the hole shot and finishing third on her 1990 Honda Cub, her Christmas gift from her hubby in 1990. Courtney says - “We feel so blessed to have found a sport where the whole family has spent so much time together. We have met friends that are more like family and know that anyone at a race, competitor or not would stop what they were doing to help anyone in need. MX people are just good people.” Her kitchen wall has an arrangement of signs decorating it and Courtney says they really say it all.... 1. The family that plays together stays together. 2. CMATVA Elk Ride Benezette, Pa
Central Mountains ATV Assoc., Inc. held their 5th Annual Tour for Elk and Toy Drive on November 5 and 6 in Benezette, PA. Our “members only” club ride had an amazing combined turnout of 323 riders and 207 machines! A chilly registration took place first thing at the Elk Visitor’s Center and then we broke down into groups to enjoy a wonderful catered lunch by the Benezette Hotel and a visit to the Benezette Winery Store. The wine shop seemed to be a BIG hit! Once everyone was done shopping and fed we hit the road to see those elk we drove two hours for and we were not disappointed. Of course every group is not going to have the same experience but in total CMATVA members saw 60 elk on Saturday and 76 Sunday. Between and after rides everyone had a good time visiting the Elk Visitor’s Center and we even had an opportunity to watch a movie on how elk were brought into Pennsylvania.
A special thank you goes out to everyone who made this year’s 5th Annual Tour for Elk and Toy Drive such a success. We have a remarkable group of dedicated members who helped in many ways from parking to registration and keeping the group rides organized and everything moving throughout the day. Parking for all of the trucks and trailers was made possible by Benezette Township allowing us to use the baseball field and Andy Tuttle who allowed use of his fields, thank you all for this. I know they say that religion and politics should not be mixed, but I’ll ask you in light of the recent happenings in our country, do you know what God has to say about it all? And if he were involved do you think that maybe things would be any different than what they currently are? No matter whether you believe in a Heavenly Father, God Creator of all or not I would bet that you would prefer to live in a more peaceful society than not. The Bible says in Daniel 2:21 (NIV) He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.

As a Christian believer I interpret this to mean that just like he changes the seasons God will control who he allows to become our current leaders and he will in fact send others if the current ones aren’t doing a good job. That he will guide those who will seek out the truth. The Bible also says in Titus 3:9 (NIV) But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless.

Again, whether you agree with the outcome or not, it is the outcome. So wouldn’t it be wise for us to move on to other important things such as healing and repair, to support the position and not the person filling the position. More importantly the Bible says in Leviticus 19:18 (NIV) Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord. Let’s face it, many are happy about the outcome but there are many who are not. Would it not be wise whether you consider yourself a Christian or not to try and make the best of the current situation and to give it some time before passing judgment on what the future outcome may be. Research shows that 80% of the things we worry about never come to fruition anyhow. I guess a couple of things to possibly take away from this are that number one, Gods Will ultimately controls everything and nothing that any government will do can overthrow that. You may ask then if that’s true why God would allow such violence to be going on in our country. I guess to that response I would ask if you believe that current activities in our society are a Blessing or maybe rather a Judgement from God. Secondly, we must grasp the fact that our government cannot and should not save us. Only we can do that through the power of Jesus Christ by humbling ourselves, by loving our neighbors and by determining Gods Will for our lives and discovery of the transforming power of the gospels found in the Bible.
