Captains Quarters Hey everybody! Welcome to our Motorama Preview issue for 2016. I know many of you are returning readers and we thank you all for your loyalty. A warm welcome to all the rest who may have picked us up for the first time ever as you arrived for the races and shows right here at Motorama. If that’s the case, thanks for checking us out and we hope you see something you like. I’m writing this article during the blizzard of 2016. As a second thought I’m hoping we can look back and say yeah, I remember that and not, which one. Lol. Yes it was beginning to look like we were getting through another winter unscathed but low and behold Mother Nature definitely had other plans. As a dirt bike rider and racer, I’m not a real big fan of the snow and cold. I know however that some of you are really digging it, but to me it’s the digging that I don’t like. Our cars are actually disappearing as the day continues on. Oh well, as my wife always says, this too shall pass so off to the races we go. In this issue find year end champions from the Mid Atlantic Motocross Association (MAMA), and the East Coast Enduro Association (ECEA). Both great organizations that love and promote the sport and cater to youth racing. Check out some of their champions here in our pages and also hit the appropriate websites to see more from their respective race series. Also find Nitro Arenacross racing from our friends in the Midwest and limited action from the Amsoil Arenacross Series as their rounds landed in Pa. (again that snowstorm). Of course make sure you check back next month as we’ll have race coverage from our favorite arenacross event of all time, the Motorama Races and Shows. We have indoor flat track from Timonium, bike shows and swap meets and info on Vintage Hare Scrambles racing. Best of all you can check out the advertisers in our pages and get set up for everything you need for the upcoming season. I would ask that you please support them when you can. They really want to do business with you so I ask that you give them a shot before buying online or somewhere out of the area. Brapp Mag is also online showcasing pictures and video from all events we attend and you can even find links to all the local events on our photo page featuring images from the best photographers that our region has to offer. Well, that’s about it. Check us out and if you’re at the show, strap in and get ready for the greatest show on earth. If you’re reading before, make sure you get there early and find a seat because they fill up fast. As always, we’ll see you at an event real soon. B

Everyone loved the course at Wicomico.
constantly about the course being phenomenal. Trail Pros actually managed to get 9 ½ miles for the afternoon race which was quite an accomplishment especially since the riding park was open to the public every weekend leading up to the day before the race! The course had a little of everything which made it a fun, yet manageable challenge for the wide variety of racers this race normally gets! It was an awesome day at the Hangover Hare Scramble, and hard to imagine it almost never happened! In 2012 I raced my first race. It was the Hangover Hare Scramble. I loved its challenges and you never know what Mother Nature is going to give you this time of year. My fiancé, Billy Schlag, supports me trackside because this is the one race that he himself doesn’t race. In October I started looking for the info on the upcoming race but I couldn’t find anything about it online. As far as I knew this race happens every year. it’s how you start your race season... rain, snow or shine! It’s been held by various clubs at different locations, but this year it wasn’t on any schedules. I mentioned this to Billy and he said, “I’ll put it on.” I really didn’t know what to think. I know he is capable of building epic trails because that is his business, but we’ve never taken on anything like this and now at this point it’s Mid-November… Well it happened! We spent countless hours planning. Everything from the race course, to trying to figure how much ribbon we would need, along with many other details. We were blessed to have amazing friends, along with a couple of great riding clubs, and some wonderful sponsors to make it all possible! What a learning experience!
We really can’t wait to have everyone back in 2017. We are so excited to implement improvements from the moment you enter the facility. We plan to continue to bring you the Hangover Hare Scramble for as long as we are able. Riding and racing is a fun experience, and as long as it remains that way we’ll keep the tradition rolling! You can keep up with us on TrailPros.us for any events that we are planning, and of course you can find us at: facebook.com/ hangoverharescramble Thanks to our 2016 Hangover Hare Scramble Sponsors: Ride On Moto, Limited Decal, Jarmans Sport Cycles, Fly Racing, Rocky Mountain ATV/MC and Task Racing Special Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers from Southern Maryland Dirt Riders and Prince William Family Off-Road Riders! Our wonderful family of friends… The Knapps, The Ross’s, The Webber’s, Jim Barry, along with so many other advocates of the sport we all love! Without you this could not have been such a great day!
Nancy Sabater & Billy Schlag Trail Pros – Track and Trail Builders
We had an amazing turnout with over 300 riders who came from as far as Indiana! Where else would you want to be on a perfectly sunny Sunday, with the most perfect dirt, surrounded by people that want you to have a most epic day! So while it may have been a bit stressful… since it was our first, as I said, we learned so much and really can’t wait till 2017! We have received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from the racers. People message me

RACE REPORT We had some great racing! The day started with a 30 minute Micro class race. These mini racers had a 1 ½ mile course which was great mix of moto and woods. After results were tabulated, Logan Ritz brought home the big win followed by Carter Przemelewski and Austin Tsakanikas! Next up was our great mix of youth classes. Their hour long race took them on a 4 mile course. Top honors goes to Andrew Wheeler in the 85cc (12-15) class, followed by Noah Ritz and Justin Hibbs. Honorable mention to Girls (815) class winner BreeAnna Frye with her win and an awesome 15th overall! Our afternoon race was off the charts! We had full lines for nearly all 14 classes! The 2 hours of action was intense. With a solid Pro class, top honors were held by Craig DeLong finishing 6 min and 14 seconds ahead of challenger Brandon Nero, followed by Ethan Ficklin! Top amateur was Ride On Moto’s own, Luke Ross in the Lites A class, who placed a solid 3rd in the Overall. Our Pro Womens class was comprised of Shawn Davidson, Sarah Baldwin and Ashley Copeland. Shawn was rippin, and heading to a top 10 overall finish till misfortune on the last lap saw her stuck on the ever changing course. She still managed to take the win in her class along with some solid riding! With full classes theres certainly lots of race stories to share. We appreciate all of you and are so glad you chose to start your 2016 race season with us! B A complete listing of all results can be found online at: http://www.moto-tally.com/HHS/Results.aspx

RACER INTERVIEW CHEYENNE RACHELLE MCGUIN Age: 15 yrs-old (16 in April) Hometown: Athletic Training Facility in Appomattox VA & Family home in Northern VA Years Racing: 11 years - Started racing at 4-years old Classes: Women Open Expert; Mini-Women Open Expert 2016 Classes: For 2016, I will be racing the 2 Women’s classes and I also want to ride some races in the new 125 Class; and either Schoolboy and/or 250 Class to get more experience in classes with fuller gates. I just bought a 1974 Suzuki TM250 so I can have some fun with Vintage AHRMA racing in 2016! Bike: I’m a 2-Stroke chick - and the Yamahas seem to fit me best! For 2016 I will be racing aboard a Yamaha YZ250 as well as my 2 championship bikes, the Yamaha YZ125s - Unless of course a big sponsor out there wants to help a girl out and give me a new tricked out bike! Race Number: #1 - I run with the #1 plate earned in the AMA Mid-Atlantic District Championship Favorite Food: It’s a tossup between chicken breast with pasta or Chocolate Moose Tracks ice cream when I’m feeling rebellious! LOL! Favorite Movie: I love to laugh – so any comedy that has Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy, Will Ferrell, or Will Smith. They’re my favorites! Other Passion: I am a competitive figure skater, and am currently working with a Russian Olympic coach and former Russian Olympian. I started skating at just 4-years old and I love to compete and perform as much as possible. Hobbies: Snowboarding and Mountain biking. I like to cross train on the mountain bike. When I’m out there on the trails, it makes me feel connected to nature and it’s where my mind can be free. I am lucky to live just down the road from the only year-round snowboarding freestyle facility in the USA. Some of the instructors traded me snowboarding lessons
for riding lessons and now I’m hooked! There’s nothing better than snowboarding in your shorts in August! Sponsors: Budds Creek MX Park, Workscreations, Cycle Gear, Max Muscle Springfield, Wiseco, Boyesen, Race Tech, Acerbis, Fly Racing, Smith Optics, Pro Taper, Sampsons Cycles in NC, Limited Decals, Limitless Motosports, and No Reverse Accomplishments: 6-Time AMA District Motocross Champion First Female to Win an AMA District MX Championship in a Coed Class 2-Time AMA Mid-Atlantic District MX Champion - Women Open Expert (2014 & 2015) 2-Time AMA Mid-Atlantic District MX Champion - Mini-Women Open Expert (2014 & 2015) 2015 Central America Motocross Racing Tour 2015 Invited to Represent the United States at the Supercross Internacional Race in Guatemala 2015 3rd Place Finish in MX2 Open at the Regional Championships in Puerto Escondido, Mexico 2015 Won the MX2 250 Heat Race at the FIM Supercross Internacional Tinco Race - Guatemala 2014 Youngest Participant at the WMX Pro-Am Race at Blue Diamond MX Park 2013 Most Improved Rider of the Year – Mid-Atlantic Motocross Association 2008 AMA District 7 MX Champion - 50cc Open 4-8 yrs 2006 AMA District 7 MX Champion - 50cc Oil Injected 4-6 yrs Finish at LL: 2015 was a big year for me. My riding improved a lot and although I qualified out of NE Areas into the NE Regional, I made the decision not to pursue Loretta’s. I am concerned about the current state of women’s amateur and pro racing programs in the US. At a time when the field of women racers is deep with talent, only 21 women are given the opportunity to take the gate at Loretta’s as opposed to 42 men. I may want to someday experience Loretta’s, but my real dream is to travel and experience different racing venues throughout the US and abroad that will enrich me as a racer and a women. What or who motivates you to race: My parents have been my biggest supporters, sacrificing a lot of family time and money to allow me to chase my dream. My dad wrenches on all my bikes himself most of the time. My mom drives the big rig and gives me trackside and pit support. My older brother Garrett is my biggest motivation to better myself since my goal in 2016 is to match and then beat his lap times. I guess sibling rivalry motivates me a bit more than I want to admit! LOL! But honestly, I am pretty self-motivated. I am dedicated to myself and improving in this sport. My focus on race day is on my starts and to ride smart with good technique; and my goal is to improve my lap times. I don’t really

worry about or focus on the other competitors. I focus on the track and what I need to do to improve myself. So I guess you can say that I’m my own biggest competition! What do you like most about racing: Everything! It’s exhilarating! It builds character! It’s not for the faint of heart! The dedication and discipline needed is unparalleled. I love how it brings out the best in me. Goals for 2016: My goals for 2016 are to continue to grow as a racer and improve through dedicated training and broader racing experiences; and to advocate for women’s racing by motivating and inspiring young girls and women to enjoy the sport. I will be defending my two racing titles this coming race year and I want to transition this year to pro women’s racing by attempting to qualify for a few of the East Coast Pro WMX races.
My eyes are on 2017 and 2018, when I hope to be running most of the larger events throughout the US and abroad. I would love to be able to race internationally and travel back to Central America and run the National Circuit there. I hope motocross will be the catalyst to a great career in athletics and sports medicine. I want to stay relevant in the motocross world as a female rider and inspiration for other women riders, both as a trainer and a mentor. My longterm vision and dream is to use my experiences in competitive figure skating and motocross competition to train other young athletes and inspire them to chase their dreams, and achieve their goals. B
Personal Background: I was born into a house full of athletes and filled with competition. Boating, water skiing, jet ski racing, competitive shooting; and motocross was and still is a huge part of my family life. So it was just second nature when I learned to ride at 3 and began racing at 4. I really couldn’t escape it – it was to become my passion! At 6 years old I won the 50cc MX Championship and I captured a 2nd championship in 2008, winning the 50cc Open class. I continued to ride and returned to serious racing in 2013. I am one of the few women racers that does not live at a training track and is not home schooled. It is difficult sometimes to try to maintain a normal girl’s lifestyle while competing at this level in a sport that requires the highest level of discipline and dedication even at the amateur level. I do have a modified school schedule which allows me the opportunity to complete classes online when traveling. This modified schedule allows me to train both motocross and on ice 3-4 times a week. The east coast is home to some of the fastest women racers on the circuit, sending the most racers to Loretta’s and having an awesome representation of professional women in the WMX. I’m thankful to have the opportunity to learn from and compete with these elite female athletes. 2015 was an amazing year for me. After capturing the 2 Women’s Championships here in the US, I was honored with an invitation to represent the US in Central America as the only female participant in the FIM Supercross Internacional race in Guatemala. The Central American tour started with weeks of training with the 10-Time Pro National Guatemala Champion, Estefan Vicko Castillo; and a whirlwind of TV and radio Interviews with local and national channels like Fox Sports. The tour continued with a road trip to compete as the only women in the MX2 Open class of the Regional Championships in Puerto Escondido, Mexico where I broke out a 3rd place finish; cliff diving; and surfing at one of the world’s top 5 surfing beaches. The tour ended at the renowned Supercross Internacional Tinco race in Guatemala where I was the only female participant in the men’s classes. Winning the heat race in the MX2 250 class was a life event that I will cherish along with all the new friendships that were created with all the international racers. Words cannot describe how gracious and friendly the other racers are in Central America and the experience will forever change how I view racing and my place in the racing world!

CLICK HERE FOR MORE Jack Stedding is awarded the D7 Lifetime Achievement award.
Early December took us to visit our friends from the MAMA Organization and D7 region for their annual awards banquets. These two groups merged a few years back and combined on this evening for a night of good eats, lots of awards and a celebration of another racing season in the books. District 7 Dirt Track champions.
The festivities began with a social hour in the late afternoon followed by a delicious Maryland Style meal. After that they went right into their long list of special awards winners and the crowning of their 2015 champions. Other activities on the night recognized the retiring 2015 board along with announcement of the new board members and the 2016 racing schedule, lots of bench racing and of course music and celebration afterwards.

2015 PAOHV Simulator Season In Review By: Denny Mann
With the help of our Training Squad, the 2015 season was a huge success. Coming out of the gate in February we presented at the Great American Outdoor Show for nine days. Then after a five day break we followed up by presenting at Motorama for two days. This was a grueling task and we wore out many of our volunteer staff due to the hundreds of youth trained, but the effort was well worth it. Hundreds of the PaOHV “Rules of the Trail” t-shirts were given away free of charge to attendees in the Harrisburg Farm Show Complex to remind the youth of safe and ethical riding practices. The simulator in the spring went idle with event cancelations, but June was rockin’ starting off with the Bedford County Youth Field Day in Everett Pa. This was one of my favorite shows and we trained 122 young students with 72 parents. Then a week later the simulator was used at the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area’s (AOAA) Safety Weekend. At this event our training staff taught full blown lessons to ATV and Dirt Bike students. The Simulator was used to demonstrate proper riding posture. July and August events were held on PaOHV Corporate Members’ properties. In July Rausch Creek Trail Riders hosted a one day simulator event in conjunction with lessons taught by their own instructor and then in August at the Rock Run Recreation Area for their festivities. Both of these shows helped bond the corporate membership with the mission of PaOHV to create a safe riding environment for new riders. We feel starting early in a riding career with good fundamental riding habits and ethics will promote a safer future in our sport.
View of a youth participant on the ATV simulator at the Great American Outdoor Show. Participants were taught and quizzed on the “Rules of the Trail”.
The Boy Scouts of America have also realized the need for ATV instruction and have added ATV training as a camp activity in hopes to reduce danger through completeing the training. Our final outing was held at the Wizard Jamboree in York County on October 24th. This was a great fit for simulator training because of the various Scout Camps hosting classes on ATVs. We were able to answer many questions concerning proper riding techniques and what to expect at the ATV training they would receive at camp. All of this would not have happened without help from the PaOHV membership and a list of 2015 Simulator Trainers is at the end of this article. We need to double our staff of trainers and interested individuals should contact Denny Mann at (717) 532-6439. The 2016 training season will start in February in Washington Pa. at the Washington County ATV Show. The 2016 Schedule of Events is listed at the end of this article and if we are close to any event please come and see what a wonderful piece of elite training equipment our Simulator provides communities across the Commonwealth. Also we wish to work more with the membership who host events by extending the invitation of having our staff and the simulator at these events. Feel free to contact me and schedule an event. B

Registration, Titling and Insuring Your ATV Who must register and title?
All ATVs in Pennsylvania, except ATVs used solely for business or agricultural purposes, need to be registered and titled with DCNR. ATVs used in Pennsylvania must be registered and titled with DCNR’s Snowmobile/ATV Section. The ATV registration and titling fees are NOT user fees for the privilege of using trails on state-owned land. The fees provide funding to administer the program, maintain trails in DCNR-managed parks and forests, and provide grants to profit and non-profit organizations for developing additional riding opportunities.
Two Types of Registrations Apply: • Registration
For ATVS used anywhere off of your own property or property leased by you, such as designated State Forest trails. $20 fee every two years
• Limited Registration
For ATVs used solely on your own land or land leased by you. Free registration No expiration, unless ownership of vehicle changes.
Plates and Decals
An ATV owner will be issued a registration plate for the vehicle. An expiration sticker to be affixed to the plate will be issued for standard registrations.
Liability Insurance
If you are using your ATV solely on land owned or leased by you, you are not required to get liability insurance. All other riders must carry liability insurance. Proof of that insurance must be carried with you when you ride. There are no minimum requirements or coverage standards established by DCNR or the Snowmobile/ATV Law for the liability insurance.

Getting Started in Vintage Cross Country Do you have an old bike from the 70’s or 80’s sitting in the corner of your garage, shed, barn or basement? Dust her off, tune her up and come ride with us! The 2016 Potomac Vintage Riders Vintage Hare Scramble series kicks off April 10th at Rocket Raceway in Three Springs, PA. (this round is not promoted by Rocket MX) For those that are not familiar with us, we have a 10 race vintage and Post vintage cross country series. Vintage is for bikes built before 1975 and Post Vintage is for bikes built from 1975–1994. There are age classes for 50+, 60+ and 70+ and
displacement classes that run from 200 and under to open class. There are further sub categories in the PV classes broken down by year. Historic 1975–1977, PV 1978–1984 (Non disk brake), PV modern 1983–1987 (Front disk only) and Early Modern 1985–1994 (front and rear disk brakes) So, if you have a bike that falls into the above date ranges, we have a class for you to ride in. All races have classes that include Expert, Intermediate and Novice (A,B &C) so be not afraid. Tracks are usually 3.5–4.5 miles long and offer a wide range of trail conditions from single track, grass track and fire roads.

Vintage race 45 minutes after the end of the Vintage race. It’s not just about the racing however, we have a great bunch of riders that treat each other like family. Race days are laid back with a low keyed atmosphere yet offer competitive racing. You can meet riders from PA, NJ, MD, WV, OH, VA, & NY. Heck we even have a guy that drops in from time to time from Alaska when he is down this way. Just because we ride old bikes, does not mean the younger crowd is not welcome. It’s still just as fun to ride a thirty year old bike even when you are barely 30 years old yourself. So maybe you are an Ex racer thinking of coming out of retirement or a current hot shoe, you can still find a bike and be competitive for relatively low cost compared to racing modern bikes. Even the gate fees and entry fees are low. NO memberships required. No AMA, District, AHRMA…) So if you have an older bike, (or you know where to get one) bring it out and race it, trail ride it or just spend the day reliving the past. Spectators are more than welcome. Ride em, don’t hide them! You can find our complete schedule in this issue of Brapp, Mag. Also visit the Potomac Vintage Riders web site (click on the cross country tab) or look us up on our facebook page at vintageharescramble. Our facebook page will have the latest news and information such as event flyers, results and photos. We have been promoting vintage hare scrambles in our region for over 10 years and have seen great growth in our series. Please feel free to give me a call at 814-421-1140 with any questions. B dkutskel@yahoo.com Dave Kutskel

York, Pa Fairgrounds January 17, 2016
The Potomac Vintage Riders (PVR) hosted their annual Bike Show and Swap meet the day after their year-end awards banquet for their Vintage Hare Scrambles Series. This show attracts thousands of attendees looking for those hard to find parts and those bikes from days gone by that so many of us still love. They also host a Vintage Bike Show at the event and this year attracted over 125 entries. I spent hours in the show area and every time I turned around I spied another piece that I once owned or wish I would have. It was eye candy galore for the over 30 crowd.

CHAPLAINS CORNER FAITH COMES BY HEARING Hello Brapp fans! God’s word says we must worship Him in Spirit. JESUS is the creator, and King of Kings worth of worship and praise. If we want to have more faith then we need to be hearing more. Many times when we face struggles, we begin to doubt God or his goodness because we are not feeding our faith. Much like if we were starving our body, we need to have a continuous flow of positive input to continue being positive and faith filled. Take time this month to recall past God Victorys when you saw God’s goodness in your life or someone else’s. Also read a scripture passage of faith when God did amazing things for men and women of Faith. See ya in the spring at Doublin Gap chapels just before riders meeting about 10:30!

Banquet Makes History - From the ECEA Board In mid-January, the 2015 ECEA/MSR Awards Banquet and Vendor Expo topped the charts as being the biggest in ECEA history. With over 1000 award winners, friends and families spent their day at the Valley Forge Casino Convention Center in Pennsylvania.
THANK YOU to ALL who came out, and to our title sponsor: Tucker Rocky-MSR. And what a day it was. We’ve been attending the ECEA Banquets for a number of years now and they are always well attended. This year did seem like the biggest however. The afternoon industry show had lots of vendors available for all the patrons, some fun games, and informational seminars. In the late afternoon the Fast Kidz awards kicked off to a full house. Specialty awards were given out along with class champions awards, and your Pee Wee Champion, Kenito Held, was awarded a Cobra Factory Elite Ride as he moves into the Juniors division. Afterword’s the kids had a pizza party, played games and watched the San Diego SX on the big screen.
Abigail Appleby wins the 12-15 Girls division.
The evening event brought a sold out house to the convention center for the Enduro and Hare Scrambles awards. Marc Grossman, and the late Skip Stoner were inducted into the ECEA Hall of Fame. Both these guys have made countless contributions to the organization, and both were instrumental in developing what has become one of the best Hare Scrambles Series in the world to participate in. My thanks to both, and condolences to the Stoner family in their loss, and for sharing this great man so the rest of us could enjoy what we love to do. What a great group to hang with. If you were there and if you race their series, you already know what I mean. If not and you are looking for a fun family atmosphere, and a place to compete against some of the fastest off road riders on the planet, then you owe it to yourself to check out one of their events. Just ask one of the 74 ECEA Fast Kidz who attended every one of their events this year! Please see the upcoming race schedule in our pages or log onto their website for more info at: www.ECEA.org. B

ARCTIC CAT NITRO ARENACROSS TOUR January 8-9, 2016 - Springfield, MO
Story By: Dave Pott - Photos By: Matt Burgher CATCHING UP WITH JAMES BROWN January 8th and 9th found the Arctic Cat Nitro Arenacross Tour in Springfield, Missouri, and today we are focusing on a few of the riders. Beginning with a new rider to the Pro Class, James Brown. Recently making a strong showing Saturday, he is racing out of Arcadia, Kansas and currently lives in Osage Beach, Missouri. James rides the #22 Yamaha. Spending over sixteen years working his way through the ranks and through the injuries, James began riding when he was seven on a KTM Junior that his dad bought for him. Tending to break down, James remembers his dad working on the bike quite often. He also states that talking about his injuries is a “rough subject.” Amongst his worst injuries was a broken knee cap and and a right collar bone. Missouri tracks have played a large part in James’ rise. His favorite being HLR Motorsports, because its flat and wide open. “Steve and Trina [Halterman] really keep on that place!” said James. In addition, the Branson Nationals tend to stand out in his mind for two reasons. He finished 4th in the Intermediate Class, and because the track quickly flooded. The James River’s rise took only a few hours. “It was so bad; they were quickly evacuating people out of there.” James states his training has been steadily improving. After spending a lot of time practicing on his 2014 Yamaha YZF250, he cycles on his mountain bike and works on his breathing. “It can make or break you towards the end of a moto.” James also gets plenty of rest and chooses his food properly. “Water really helps. It keeps you hydrated, which if you want to ride dirt bikes at the top level you have to be healthy.” James had a great 2015 season in the Missouri State Motocross Series, making his sponsors proud. With O’Neal, Alpinestars, Novik Gloves, Source MX and Engine Ice behind him, he finished 2nd overall in the 250 Pro and 3rd overall in the 450 Pro classes. This year he’s going for a championship he states. “Road to Loretta’s here I come!”
MATT HANNAH RIDES TO THE TOP Residing from Fair Play, Missouri, Matt Hannah #113 had only a 30-minute jaunt down highway 13 to Springfield, Missouri. He took First Place in both the 12-16 School Boy and 250 Novice classes on Saturday, while Friday brought him a first and a third. Coming out of the Missouri State Motocross Series, Matt is a staple amongst the regulars. At 15 years of age, he’s one we will soon be seeing amongst the pros.
Matt began his racing career only a few years ago, when he was almost thirteen years old. Beginning with an xr50, and spending time riding around the yard, Matt progressed to a crf70, a crf80 and then a crf100. The first race of his career was the most memorable for Matt. It was a Missouri Series Hare Scramble, and he was in a 65 class. “I didn’t know what to think when I was sitting on the line about to start. I was kind of lost and had no clue what was going on. After that 6th lap race, I knew exactly what to think. I knew that I wanted to continue my career as a dirt bike rider.” Hannah’s favorite track is not at an mx park or a fair race, but in Tracy Freeman’s backyard. Freeman, a custom track builder, invites countless amateurs and pros to his house to practice. “With him owning MX343, a custom track building company, you could see how his track could be pretty good,” said Matt. His training regimen begins on the dirt and ends in the streets. “It starts with riding, no matter how much you workout or where you workout, there’s muscles we use in motocross that we can only build by riding.” Matt rides a 26-mile loop on a mountain bike and spends time lifting weights (light weight, high reps) while concentrating on strengthening his core. As with most dirt bike riders, Matt has had his share of injuries. With wounds to his collar bone, tibia, right wrist, left hand and left hip, he states “Injuries are definitely part of the sport, but it’s a part that we have to live with. It happens to the best of us, but you have to learn to bounce back harder than you fell down.” Matt credits his family and friends as playing a large part in his success. “Having such a supportive following including my parents, Steve Underwood with Marionville Powersports, and Derrick Porter is the best thing for me.” Other sponsors of Matt’s are 100% goggles, Andy’s Frozen Custard, Dell’s Roofing, Yarbrough Inc., Dunlop Tires, Tracy Freeman MX343, Hannah’s General Stores, Cometic Gasket, Vertex Pistons, and Shades of Gray Custom Paint and Design. Preferring to race in front of a larger crowd and on more tight and technical tracks, Matt tends to lean towards an Arenacross/Supercross environment. “When your lined up on the gate and you look around and you see all of the people filling the stands watching, waiting to see us ride. It makes me feel so cool and my confidence levels shoot through the roof.” If previous years are any indication of future success, then more championships are in the cards. Matt already holds four Arenacross championships and is the 2015 Missouri State Supermini Champion. He is the current leader in two of the classes at the Arctic Cat Nitro Arenacross Tour and is looking for many more podiums over the next few months. B

Baltimore County Trail Riders And Cockeysville Optimist Club 40th Annual Rodney Farris Memorial Indoor Races MD State Fairgrounds Cow Palace December 19, 2015
Round two of the indoor series took place under somewhat more normal circumstances. The temps dropped from the week before indicating that winter was indeed on its way and the scoring glitches were repaired from the previous week allowing all to be home before their race vans turned into pumpkins. But seriously folks, props to all involved for bringing us this great winter race series. The action was red hot as always as the racers put on a great show and the clubs carry on this close to half a century racing event.

Mud Freak Report By: Mike “Mud Freak” Petrone
What’s Up Off-Road Freaks! I always plan our first ride of the New Year at the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails with my two best friends, Joe and Mario. It’s become a tradition for us! Every time we come here we always find something new. There are so many trails you can explore until you run out of gas! We have been riding here for about 4 to 5 years now and it never gets old. The weekend starts like this. We are on the road by 5:00am and drive to Hall’s True Value Hardware in Snow Shoe to register our membership; it’s only $22 for the entire year. From there we head to the Kwikfill Motel where we check in. Now for the best part; time to ride! We load our gear up and head out to Black Bear Trail Head at Moshannon State Park, which is about 15 to 20 minutes from the motel. We start our journey from the Black Bear Trail which I am a big fan of. It has a lot more mud sections and the play ground is also a blast. We then head towards Snowshoe where we go through one historical spot on trails, Peale Tunnel. It was built in 1883 and is 1,277 feet long; it’s great to ride through. Once on the other side of the tunnel you have the option to take the main trail all the way to Snowshoe, or you could jump off and hit various side trails which is another cool factor about this place. By now it’s lunch time and we go to another great spot called Newman Sandwich Shop. What a great place to relax and have a cup of hot chocolate in the winter or have some ice cream in the summertime. In our case it was hot chocolate and a burger which was slamming great food. After lunch it was back on the quads and heading towards Bloody Skillet. We ride until we can’t go anymore because Bloody Skillet is closed for certain parts of the seasons. This latest adventure was very cold and icy but we still had a blast. WINTER MAINTENANCE TIPS Don’t miss out on riding this spring because your bike wasn’t properly serviced this winter! NOW is the time for winter maintenance before the season starts and you’re caught behind the competition. One of the most important things you can do is to revalve and or service your suspension. IT WILL HELP YOU GO FASTER AND MAKES YOUR BIKE SAFER. Servicing your suspension will also make the suspension more consistent and predictable allowing you to go faster for longer while keeping you safer and ahead of your competition.

Complete bike inspection should also be done this time of year and should include the following: • Linkage steering bearing (Clean, Inspect, and Grease) • Make sure controls are moving freely • Inspect cables and make sure they aren’t frayed • Levers aren’t bent, broken or floppy • Your throttle should move freely (should not stick) • Wheel bearings are not loose • Brakes are not worn • Chain and sprockets are properly adjusted and no teeth are off sprockets • Tires are not worn, not flat and knobbies should have a good sharp edge These are only some of the parts you should inspect, so while you are waiting for it to get warm, go over your machine and get your bike race prepped and ready to go for the season. Then when your friends call you to go riding in the spring, you will be ready to ride! BRRAAPP! Any questions regarding maintenance give us a call. We will be happy to help you!
