Captains Quarters
Happy New Year everyone and welcome to the first issue of 2018! It seems this February issue has always been the biggest we do each year. After 17 years of pumping these bad boys out I would say we have a consistent track record to fall back on. No wonder it’s so big however, the cabin fever has been building and we’re all ready to ride. We have some big changes coming for the new year and I’m guessing the first thing you may have noticed is a change in our cover design and the addition of a new logo. New for 2018 we will be expanding our coverage to feature our off-road riding and outdoor adventure friends as well as our regular race coverage. Never fear, nothing will be going away, we will only be bringing you more great info, places to ride, events to attend, stuff for sale and all the usual blah, blah, blah, or should I say Brapp Brapp Brapp! ;) The other big change is the fact that we will be going to six times a year print schedule. I know we’ve been bouncing that around the last year or so, 12 times then no print and now back again. But we believe we’ve figured it out and if not, we’ll change again until we get it right. The goal has always been to bring you the best local info while providing the best bang for everybody’s buck. All I hear the last couple years is that our sport is shrinking so it’s our mission to help stop that from happening. After all, we all love to ride, right? So please enjoy the current issue and keep your eyes out for changes in service, in distribution and in coverage. Beginning with this issue we will print every other month and be online everyday at BrappMag.com. Please check out our new blog at: www.jimbullphoto.blogspot.com and also find us on social media with regular updates from us and our great advertisers who also support your sport by the way. I can never ask you enough to support them in any way you can. So please kick back and read a spell, we hope you enjoy it. Until next time.

WATCH OUT FOR THIS FAST KID AGAIN IN 2018 – I WAS COMPLETELY BLOWN AWAY WHEN I FOUND OUT THAT MAX HAD ANOTHER YEAR IN THE SUPERMINI DIVISION. I THOUGHT FOR SURE HE WOULD AGE OUT THIS YEAR. UNFORTUNATELY, WE DON’T MAKE IT TO A LOT OF HARE SCRAMBLE EVENTS BUT THERE’S ONE THING FOR SURE WHEN WE DO, THIS FERNANDEZ KID IS ALWAYS OUT FRONT. HE WAS VERY HUMBLE AS WE SPOKE AND IF I HAD A DOZEN OF DONUTS TO WAGER, I’D BET THAT HE’LL EARN THAT FACTORY RIDE COMPETING AT THE GNCC SERIES IN 2018 – STAY TUNED. B
TALK ABOUT A KID WHO’S DEDICATED – I DON’T KNOW AJ VERY WELL YET, BUT I CAN TELL BY HIS PERFORMANCE THAT THIS KID IS DEDICATED TOO AND LOVES THE SPORT OF MOTORCYCLE RACING. FOR ANYONE TO WIN THREE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THE SAME YEAR FROM TWO DIFFERENT SERIES TELLS YOU A LOT ABOUT THAT PERSON. THE OTHER THING I NOTICED WAS THAT AJ LOVES TO HAVE FUN. MAYBE IT’S THE SECRET TO HIS SUCCESS AND I’M SURE IT WILL TAKE HIM FAR IN LIFE. WATCH FOR AJ AS HE’S MOVING UP A CLASS IN 2018 WITH A NEW RIDE AND THE SAME TO DETERMINATION TO WIN. Photo: Dan Morton

CMATVA New Year’s Eve Ride 90 Miles, 3 Counties, 3 Degrees
The view from our cabin rental in Cross Fork the night we arrived.
Offroad Motorsports Trail Report Cross Fork, PA Dec. 31, 2017 By: Jim Bull – BrappMag.com
It’s funny, at our last stop of the evening at the Germania Hotel I heard someone mention the Donner Party. Now don’t feel bad if you don’t know your American history (as I didn’t until I watched the movie last year). The Donner Party was a group of early American Pioneers who attempted to blaze a trail across the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the mid 1800’s in the hopes of reaching California before winter arrived. Well let me tell you - that didn’t turn out nearly as well as our New Year’s Eve ride with the Central Mountains ATV Association did. But I would be willing to bet that the close to 40 riders and 20 ma- parted from the Quiet Oaks Campground (7) and took the five-mile chines on this trip experienced similar weather conditions as the ride on township road to Debs Cross Fork Inn (1). After dinner we Donners did that winter. rode for a little over an hour north to the southern end of Ulysses Township at Lyman Run State Park. All kidding aside, what were we thinking. As we met for dinner that night at Debs Cross Fork Inn and I heard the trail boss say that After some hot chocolate and bathroom breaks we departed on we had a 90-mile route planned for the night, I thought this guy is the longest part of our trip heading east into southern Tioga county either joking or we’ve all lost our marbles. just south of Gaines and from there back to the Germania Hotel (3) on the map. It was about a two-hour ride and we saw some of the prettiest terrain you could imagine. We had a super full moon that evening and mother nature had dumped just enough snow to make both the riding super fun and the surrounding sights beautiful. The pine trees were canopied with snow and we saw many white tail deer bouncing around in the moonlight. As always, my beautiful wife Deb was on the lookout for the ever-elusive Sasquatch and Really, I wasn’t all that concerned. My wife and I had recently as usual she would once again come home disappointed. It is one joined the association, but this would be our longest ride to date of our goals however to ride as many miles as we need to until we and at night in subzero temps. As we pulled out of the parking lot and headed north towards Lyman Run State Park in our loaner Polaris General 1000 from Off Road Motorsports in Myerstown, PA I only had one thing in mind. Lord, please bring us all home alive.
One of the main reasons we linked up with this group of over 1500 members was to enjoy new places to ride, but to never have to ride alone again. There’s fun and safety in numbers and this was what we were hoping to achieve. Besides, the CMATVA is a leading association in PA fighting for our rights to ride and helping develop new trail along the way.
riences we have ever had in the great outdoors. Would we do it again, yes definitely. Would we do it next week, probably not. Journeys like this are meant to be cherished and enjoyed but never overdone.
We arrived back in Cross Fork just before midnight to the warmth of our cabin and a New Year’s kiss. FINAL MOTO MX TRAINING By: Sean Koeller Photos: Shannon Bloom Photo’s It’s winter, the main off season for those of us racing in the North East, and with that comes down time and a great opportunity to build yourself into a better racer for the upcoming season. Most of us want to take our racing seriously; we all know the danger in our sport even at an amateur level and with that being as mentally strong and physically fit as possible definitely goes a long way in preventing injury and making us better at what we do. Going into early February we are quickly approaching the season and are realistically only six weeks away from local racing which makes it the perfect time to ramp up your program. Base fitness is extremely important; it takes years to build a solid base you can lean on in times of injury and low motivation. Low intensity cardio like cycling, stair machines, rowing, and jogging are perfect ways to increase your base fitness and carry you throughout the season. The trick to building a solid base is to be consistent, find a workout you can do at home. Whether you hook your bicycle to a trainer, an old treadmill you have collecting dust, or finding a deal on a used rower; being able to knock out 20-40 minutes before breakfast is the best way to jump start your metabolism and add to your base. For most racers, young and old, 20-45 mins of cardio 3-4 times a week will gradually build that solid base you’re looking for while not completely wearing you out so you can add workouts on top of it. My advice is to start this cardio mid-November along with weightlifting to keep it light and fun right through the holidays and prevent that holiday weight gain and avoid that post-holiday depression. Many racers fear weights, thinking it will lead to arm pump and being to bulky but rest assured mixing in a few days of weights; targeted to shoulders, core, legs, and back, will greatly improve your ability to handle the bike and keep you aggressive even at the end of the day. Compound movements like dead lifts, pull-ups, and upright rows are great for beginners looking to build strength and engage groups of muscle we use regularly on a bike. I recommend these low intensity workouts last around 8 weeks during the off season. While it is never too late to start building base fitness, with only a few weeks until the start of the season it is definitely time to ramp up the effort. During this period it’s extremely important to start to elevate the heart rate during workouts. Switching from low intensity cardio and lifting to burst movements and High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) will take a week or so to get used to so don’t be discouraged when you’re lying on the ground panting. What we find works best for racers of all types is a high intensity cardio based circuit that lasts from 20-30 minutes with as few breaks as possible. If your gym or wherever you work out has open space, grab a set of 15-30 pound dumbbells, something to jump on, and a yoga ball. The ideal circuit is a mix or explosive cardio with high rep compound exercises. Exercises like box jumps, skiers jump, lunges, and burpees are great foundations for a good circuit; mixed with squats, planks, overhead press, and sit-ups, you can get the most out of 20 minutes. A good balance is to do these types of workouts three days a week, this gives your body enough rest to go hard the next time and always have a tip-top workout. While working out is a great way to be a better racer, it’s also a great way to be a healthier and happier person. These are all recommendations from what we at FinalMoto Mx Training have found to work best with years of trial and error, working with racers of all ages and disciplines. Feel free to contact us via Facebook at FinalMoto MX Training or through our website at www.racingtheclock.us for guided workout plans and helpful tips and workouts to turn 2018 into your best season yet! I found the below prayer in the front of the MAMA MX award program booklet this year. I thought it was spot on and wanted to share it with you all – the author is unknown to me.
THE MOTOCROSS PRAYER As we approach the course to start the race We remember to thank you for your grace In this sport our actions please guide We know you are with us at our side At the starting gate we fire up our bike Rev up our motors and get ready to strike As we round tight corners and a three-foot whoop We will be banging bars with the rest of the group Taking corners around berms at 40 miles per hour We get a small hint of your Almighty power If we experience a loopout and fall onto the track We will accept our mistakes because you have our back Help us keep our stride as we race the course And know in all we do you are the source When we are tired and leave the hilly terrain We offer up our strife our bruises and pain Let our parents be proud of our training and work Of our God given talents don’t let us shirk Help us to appreciate this sport extreme And be grateful for helping all follow our dream. As I read this I couldn’t help but smile as I know that God always has our backs, if we ask him. If there is one thing that I’ve learned over the years, this well-known verse below from the book of Matthew found in the New Testament applies to everything we do in life and the prayer above. Mathew 7:7-8 7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” Just like the prayer asks above: “Help us keep our stride as we race the course and know in all we do you are the source” I’m not sure what your beliefs are but I would like to challenge you to number one – believe if you ask God for something that you will find it, then ask Him for everything you need. Better yet, ask Him for what others need. If you will do this consistently and with belief it can be a life changer for you.

South Mountain Cycle Shop CELEBRATES 1ST ANNIVERSARY
Exciting news out of Dillsburg, Pa – new motorcycle shop owner finds great success in his first year in business. No, South Mountain Cycle isn’t only one year old but former shop manager Jared Stough has now owned the facility for a full year. Jared bought the business from former owner Eric Stambaugh a year ago who did a great job of providing the platform for his long time general manager Jared Stough to nourish and grow this small tucked away shop right off Route 15 in Dillsburg, Pa. Honestly for many years people thought that Jared was already the owner of this flourishing business. No doubt to the fact that Jared has always been the face you see coming in the door and he’s been the driving force not only vending at many local races but also as a competitor. Jared had to take last year off from racing to get his business legs under him, but he has picked up a few riders that compete in both the National Enduro Series and GNCC competition. In speaking with Jared recently he told me that he plans on getting back on the track in 2018 too. He will once again return to one of his loves, racing the PVR Vintage Harescramble Series in the Open Expert division aboard his Suzuki PE 250. He also plans to race several of the National Enduro races on a bone stock Sherco 250 two stroke machine. His only plans are to throw on some bark busters and a skid plate and go. Check back as we’ll keep you updated on his progress there. My bet would be that the huge success that he is having at South Mountain is based purely on his love and knowledge of the sport. I’ve worked in this industry for many years and I’ve found that the guy who’s in the shop six days a week and then out at the events on the weekend, usually is a guy worth dealing with. Props to former owner Eric for keeping this business going and for giving Jared the resources to help grow it over the years. South Mountain actually started out as a small repair business in Northern York County and over the last several years has grown to include specialty brands such as Beta, Sherco and AJP. Not only do they offer new rides for off road and trials but also try to keep a solid used bike inventory on hand. In addition, you can find a huge tire selection on hand from brands like Dunlop and Michelin plus all the daily parts and accessory needs you may have. South Mountain offers a full-service facility including maintenance of all brand bikes, ATV’s and side by sides and they do offer PA State Inspection and PA title and tag work. So, if you’re looking for a great place to do business with an industry veteran offering a fulltime and knowledgeable staff then South Mountain Cycle Shop just might be the place. You can find them on Facebook and Instagram and they are online at: WWW.SOUTHMOUNTAINCYCLESHOP.COM Also keep an eye out for them at many events each year and stay tuned to their social media to learn about upcoming demo rides and events that they offer. B
These great brands and many more!

MotoTrial MotoTrials (also known as “Observed Trials”) is now the pinnacle of off-road riding, as the riders the most severe terrain capable of being conquered by any two or four-wheeled machine. When someone looks at the obstacles before the riding starts, a frequent comment is a simple “No way!”. A big plus for the spectators is that they can watch from just a few feet away as the riders attempt seemingly impossible obstacles.

Welcome to AMA District 6 Moto Trials. Our events are organized by the volunteer efforts of our members’ clubs. Our current clubs include the Candytown Motorcycle Club, the Durty Dabbers, the Pennsylvania Trials Riders, the Tricky Tryalers, and the White Rose Motorcycle Club. Each club hosts at least one event per year. Our events are structured with classes to challenge all levels of rider skill, ranging from Beginner to Pro. Riders progress through these classes as their skill level and need for new challenges increases. Many of our riders regularly compete in other series, including the NATC national championship series, and several clubs have hosted nationals in D6. Past and present D6 riders include several national champions, including Ryan Young, a six time NATC Pro class champion. We’re proud of our series, clubs, and riders, and invite you to join us. Directions to our events can be found by clicking on our website’s schedule of events. Registration, Titling and Insuring Your ATV Who must register and title?
All ATVs in Pennsylvania, except ATVs used solely for business or agricultural purposes, need to be registered and titled with DCNR. ATVs used in Pennsylvania must be registered and titled with DCNR’s Snowmobile/ATV Section. The ATV registration and titling fees are NOT user fees for the privilege of using trails on state-owned land. The fees provide funding to administer the program, maintain trails in DCNR-managed parks and forests, and provide grants to profit and non-profit organizations for developing additional riding opportunities.
Two Types of Registrations Apply: • Registration
For ATVS used anywhere off of your own property or property leased by you, such as designated State Forest trails. $20 fee every two years
• Limited Registration
For ATVs used solely on your own land or land leased by you. Free registration No expiration, unless ownership of vehicle changes.
Plates and Decals
An ATV owner will be issued a registration plate for the vehicle. An expiration sticker to be affixed to the plate will be issued for standard registrations.
Liability Insurance
If you are using your ATV solely on land owned or leased by you, you are not required to get liability insurance. All other riders must carry liability insurance. Proof of that insurance must be carried with you when you ride. There are no minimum requirements or coverage standards established by DCNR or the Snowmobile/ATV Law for the liability insurance.

BRAPPMAG REVIEW POLARIS 1000 EPS GENERAL - WHITE LIGHTNING OFFROAD MOTORSPORTS TRAIL REPORT CLINTON / POTTER / TIOGA COUNTY NEW YEARS EVE RIDE How appropriate - what other machine fits the bill better to ride into the New Year on than the White Lightening. And I wish I could tell you that I didn’t know what that slang stood for, but I’d be lying if I did. Anyhow, thank goodness those days are behind me, but on second thought as I write this article maybe a little White Lightening in its liquid form might have helped us stay a little warmer on this frigid night.
I called my friends at Off Road Motorsports in early December and told them I needed a machine to ride and test for a New Year’s ride with the Central Mountains ATV Association and my only request was that it be equipped with a windshield. Offroad Motorsports is a used equipment dealer located in Myerstown, PA that has one of the best selections of used ATV’s and side by sides that I’ve ever seen and that’s saying something working around the industry for over 30 years now. I called Jordan a few days before Christmas and he said, yeah I’ll have something for you. To my delight as I rolled into the shop on the Friday before our ride he had the above 2017 Polaris General EPS with only 100 miles on it waiting for me. The machine was loaded with a roof, windshield and winch along with some trick tires for tracking in the snow. What more could a guy ask for to go riding in this current cyclone bomb that has attacked much of our country. Polaris created the General as a crossover machine to satisfy both the driver who needed a work machine for around the property but also loved to go out and play on the weekends. I can honestly tell you that I’ve tried to do both chores with machines designed for one or the other purposes and it just does not work. If you’ve ever been there, you’ll know what I mean. This weekend’s ride was designed for pure fun and with temps below 5 degrees all weekend we certainly weren’t looking to haul any hay bales around. Maybe some firewood LOL but we were on the move. So I can only relay what I know about the machine in that regard. Polaris equipped this baby with a powerful 999cc Four Stroke Twin Cylinder engine with Electronic Fuel Injection. Never once did she sputter trying to start up in these subzero temps and our White Lightening never ran out of power, even when climbing 2000-foot snow covered peaks in the middle of the night. The General comes standard with an 1100-pound payload capacity and a two inch receiver hitch with a tow rating of 1500 pounds. With

the added EPS Electronic Power Steering I can only imagine that it could get the job done in any work environment that you throw at it. But as I said earlier, our mission was pure fun. We rode close to 30 miles during the daylight hours just to get a feel for our machine before meeting up with the gang for our night ride. After dinner at Debs Cross Fork Inn we departed as a group and headed north towards Lyman Run State Park. Our first challenge was crossing a wooden bridge that was marked at 62 inches wide. The General just made it through without having to detour around. After that we traversed lots of township dirt roads that were snow covered with 2-3 inches of snow. At several points we jumped off the roads onto narrower mountain trails that were covered with up to 5 inches of snow in some parts. I was most impressed that evening in one section of trail that we headed up the mountain on. It was very rutted up and had a small stream of water trickling down it at parts. As all 20 machines started up the mountain we were third in line. This hill never seemed to stop going and at possibly two points I thought, man are we gonna make it to the top. I just smiled behind my balaclava as I knew we were still in 2-wheel drive mode and high range. The General had plenty left and I believe we could have climbed another 2000 feet if need be. I could go on and on about the 12 plus inches of suspension travel, the 4-wheel disc brakes and Polaris Engine Braking System, the availability of turf, 2 or 4 wheel drive modes, the fact that we traveled well over a 100 miles on less than a full tank of gas, blah, blah, blah, but I won’t. I’ll leave a link to the full specs below and let it up to you to dig through! My suggestion is though that you give either Jordon or Ben a call to see if the above machine is still available from Offroad Motorsports (717) 866-5606. I gotta apologize however because it has a few more miles on now. We took her home with I think 249 miles on it. This unit never skipped a beat and would make a great addition to anyone’s garage. Hey, maybe if its gone they’ll have something else you like too! B FULL SPECS: http://www.polaris.com/en-us/ ranger-utv/2017/ranger-xp-1000eps-sunset-red/specs

SPORTIN’ WITH SPROCKET Hello again from the southern end of Huntington County! Sprocket here, back for some more adventures and shenanigans from our sporting days afield. This first adventure I would like to tell you about took place this past year. It was the 2017 Bear Season here in the great state of Pennsylvania. A couple seasons back as most everyone knows, Pennsylvania moved the Bear opener to Saturday. This year would find me at Hunting camp in Lycoming County by myself for the first time in a long time. My youngest son Chase, decided to defend all of us and join the U.S. Army and was at that time in Fort Sill Oklahoma. My oldest son, Hunter, decided it was more important to attend a wedding of a lifelong friend on the Saturday opener and then join me for the rest of the weeks hunt. Fortunately, neither one of my sons missed much on the opening day as it found me sitting under an umbrella, (yes that’s right an umbrella!!) Getting older, I no longer tolerate getting wet if I’m not taking a shower! Anyway, I sat in a ravine off Benson Road in Lycoming County until around 10:30 or so. I then headed back to the Green Door Hunting Camp, where I have been a member for many years, to warm up and dry out. (I think there may have been a small nap in there somewhere also?) The rain did not slow down till after dark, and that became the ending to the 2017 Bear Season Opener. Monday morning, day two of Bear season would find us up in Potter County with all of our good friends from Camp Stayawhile. The plans were to drive out areas that are known to hold bear. The first drive we decided on we call the Wildcat. Because of the 2-3 inches of snow we had gotten, this would be the safest area to start in for the drivers. We divided our crew up into drivers and standers and began to get everyone in place. My son and I drew the short straws and were deemed flankers to guard the road. Our jobs were to keep anything from running out of the drive. As we waited for the drivers to get lined up, I was standing with my back against a tree looking up the mountain we were preparing to drive. I thought I heard a stick snap and thought it odd because of all the snow, so I started to turn around to look down behind me, and there she was, a bear looking up at me from the bottom of the ravine only 30 yards away. I began firing and finally was able to harvest this forest ninja who snuck up from behind me. My son came running down the road to see what was going on as it had only been 10 or so minutes that we had been waiting here for the drive to start. We were jumping up and down like a bunch of little kids that had just found out that school was closed due to snow! As our celebration continued, one of the drivers called on the radio and said they were about to start. I instructed Hunter to go back up the old dirt road a ways and be ready. As he rounded the bend about 100 yards away, the drivers called back and said a bear was heading down towards me. I looked to my left to see where Hunter was and then looked up the hill and there it was! Another bear, but he was heading back through the drive! Hunter continued walking away with the drive and soon was out of sight. As I stood on the road reflecting on what had just happened, I looked up the road in the direction that Hunter had gone and had to do a double take. I looked again, straining to see through the watery covering that my eyes were producing because of the cold and straining to focus, low and behold there was another bear walking down the road towards me! Never in a million years would I have ever thought of seeing that many bears in less than a half an hours’ time. I called Hunter on the radio to tell him to high tale it back here and quick, before this bear vanished. Within seconds I could hear Hunter running towards me and as I pointed up the ridge to where the bear was headed, Hunter found the bruin trying to make a hasty exit and began to shoot eventually connecting and harvesting his first PA Black Bear! Our bears lay a mere 60 yards apart after the smoke cleared. This is when the real celebration began!! Until next time, make memories worth telling stories about!! B
