Caught In The Act!

Captains Quarters Welcome to our first issue of the year and to the Motorama Events if that is where you are picking us up from. We have kicked off our first issue there for the last 16 years, matter of fact I personally have been attending the show since around 1982 almost from their very beginning. It’s a great way to kick off our motocross season here in the area with lots of racing, noise and exhaust fumes. Every motorcycle and quad junkies dream, right? Plus, there is so much more there to do than just racing. If you are reading us before the show, then you must be one of our regulars. I would like to personally take a minute to thank each one of you that are reading this column, we are grateful that you support us, and we hope to see you soon. We did keep busy over the winter covering some awards banquets and the iconic

Check out their info in this issue plus lots of race schedules for the year and tons of great local businesses that want to help you support your habit. In addition to racing we have a ton of great off-road riding info in our pages for the ATV and S x S crowd. This is a segment of our industry that is growing and a ton of fun to do either as an individual, couples or family outing. Check out the trail expan-

Family OHV “Destination Riding” In the Northern Tier of PA

Did I mention the views available here, talk about wide open spaces

By: Jim Bull I’ve been riding in the dirt now for nearly 50 years. Up to just a few short years ago, my entire life has been spent riding on two wheels or covering two wheeled competition events as a moto journalist. Most recently however our family has discovered the fun and adventure in OHV or UTV / ATV riding, especially in what I call “destination riding”. It takes me back to my child hood where you could just open the garage door and go, the days gone by where you could spend a day riding and actually go somewhere, can anybody else relate? Last year we joined and got involved with the Central Mountains ATV Association and I’m so glad we did. I became aware of this group due to my event coverage work in the Motorcycle and ATV industry and I knew they were making great strides in helping “open up” riding areas in the state and we wanted to learn more about that. It was here that we did our first “destination riding” in many years and we were hooked instantly.

This crew that we met from Berwick, PA logged 111 miles on a day trip to Clinton County and back

Our first big journey with the group took place last New Year’s Eve when we covered 90 miles int three-degree weather to ring in the new year. We departed the Quiet Oaks Campground in Clinton County at 7 pm that night, stopped for dinner at Debs Cross Fork Inn and ended up riding in three different PA counties before we returned to our cabin rental to thaw out by midnightwhat a blast, literally.

As I mentioned we could have chosen many directions that weekend to ride. We could have headed north towards Genesee and the NY State line, we could have headed east and enjoyed a great dinner at any number of good restaurants in Tioga County or we could have headed further south from Lyman Lake towards Cross forks in Clinton County. As a matter of fact with the Fiscal codes that Governor Wolf has recently signed, by spring of 2020 we’ll have a connector trail in Renovo that connects the Bloody Skillet to the Whiskey Springs State Trail system. And by spring of 2024 law dictates that the DCNR and Penn Dot need to work together to have legal trail from Clinton County the whole way to the NY State Line. Even as we speak many townships upstate are opening their areas to OHV riding to help bolster their economies which is great news for us. As these different groups work together our trail system continues to grow. At this printing we have very close to 700 miles of legal riding in upstate PA and within the next five years that mileage will double.

Last Labor Day weekend we wanted to introduce more of our family to the experience, so we invited our daughter and her son along who celebrated As you can see the fun is endless here and there is nothing like getting his 7th birthday with his first side by side ride in the great outdoors of Potter your family out in nature to leave the hustles and bustles of daily living beCounty PA that is also known as Gods Country. hind. I picked a few different destinations to travel too but as I mentioned on this was expecting this gift or that, maybe the Foxes Pizza we found in Galeton day we were out for a short trip. We loaded up our Yamaha Wolverine X4 or the new friends he played tag with from the cabin next door. and headed for Lyman Run State Park. Nope, it was none of that - he simply said, riding the side by side pap. O There are over 40 miles of trails between the campground and the State Park where you and your family could spend the day doing any number of great family outdoor activities. Letter from A Reader – Our Riding Family By: Paul Ritz

I cannot speak for anyone but myself, but in a community of dirt bikes, competition, and family-oriented events, I could not be happier with my life. Everywhere my family and I race whether it is racing or camping there is always great friendly people willing to help, contribute, or just have a great conversation with.

American Historic Motorcycle Racing Association

MID-ATLANTIC VINTAGE CROSS COUNTRY SERIES

As a father who grew up without an active dad in my life I found a home in the motorcycle family. With that I learned how to ride safely and competitively. The biggest gain through this is the friendships my family and I have made along the way. With this sport, although it may be a lot sometimes, it is well worth the adventures it brings. This includes meeting people all over the country, and no matter what everyone is always ready to lend a helping hand whether it’s borrowing ketchup, to changing a tire on the side of the road. One race I brought someone new to the sport, and while at the event they said “all the parents are helping each other with bike repairs although they are racing each other,” I replied this how it is. Although racing has such a big impact on our riding community not everyone realizes the other core component which is learning to take care of our environment and respecting it. For instance, just keeping our woods and roads clean and safe. I myself am part of an active motorcycle club which is part of an association of twenty different clubs. We all do our part to put on structured safe events from enduros, hare scrambles, and dual sports. Also, as a club we build so many different friendships, and our families away from home. Many members get together outside of trail work or setting up a closed course to go on fun rides together as a group. Being part of a club, you are able to learn about the local riding areas, forest trail, and close courses in a way of knowledge being past down through generations. Along with that our clubs donate to special causes. For instance, my club donates to Multiple Sclerosis and participates in the local golf outing to raise money. Other clubs donate to kids with cancer, another club even does a toy run to benefit children. With meeting all these people and working with everyone it creates a positive reflection of our community. One example is, our hare scramble raises close to $10,000 in a single weekend for the local fire dept. Another is, a lot of us use the Boy Scouts for food catering at races which benefits them by they keep all the proceeds. One of our moto moms had gotten breast cancer, and we had raised a small donation for the family. We are family not by blood but by racing. DCNR Connector Trail Update Bloody Skillet to Whiskey Springs In mid-December a group of folks met who are fueling the dream of the North Central Pa Trail Initiative in Pennsylvania which will eventually open over 1400 miles of legal OHV riding here for ATV’s and Side by Sides. It was just five short years ago when some folks from the Central Mountains ATV Association and the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails met with the DCNR and other local legislators, tourism committees, business owners and local residents to present their dream of creating a network of legal riding here in Pa similar to the Hatfield McCoy Trail System in WV. Click Here to see the proposed trail system: http://www.jimbullphoto.com/files/12_2018_NCPA_ATV_ Initiative_update_1_.pdf To date the CMATVA has helped legalize, sign and maintain 688 miles of legal riding in Pa. The goal with the help of Governor Wolfs recent signing of the Fiscal Code HB 1929 is to have 1400 miles of legal riding running from the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails the whole way to the NY state line by 2024. Click Here to read the Fiscal Code: https://issuu.com/brappmag/docs/oct18final-web/26 One of the first phases of the development is to link the Bloody Skillet to the Whiskey Springs state trail system through the town of Renovo by April of 2020. DCNR representative Albright explained to the group that there will be a temporary trail established to meet the timeline and then the DCNR will work on the permanent trail link as time and resources allows. A next step would be then to get an approximate 12 mile stretch from Whiskey Springs connected to the Quiet Oaks Campground near the town of Cross Forks. The groups are also working with Penn Dot to obtain the state road trail connectors that are needed to help make this all a reality. Stay tuned to our websites and the Central Mountains site for regular updates at: www.cmatva.org O

Pennsylvania Trails Foundation’s 2018 OHV Simulator Season By: Denny Mann

Pennsylvania Trails Foundation and the Pennsylvania Off-Highway Vehicles Association supports the efforts of all of those involved with the OHV Simulator Training. It is our hopes that the proper, prudent, OHV operation views presented in the simulator training will foster safe and legitimate OHV recreation. Chapter 77 of the Motor Vehicle Code of Pennsylvania* clearly states the requirement of an ATV Safety Certificate for all riders under the age of 16. This is the law, and without a certified course these youths will be limited to riding on land owned or leased by their parents. The PTF Simulator training is a direct outreach to this age group in a controlled nonthreatening environment exposing participants and their parents to the preliminary aspects of a certified OHV Safety Course. The uncertainties of taking a certified course is often eliminated with participants realizing the fun they could have in a certification class. The promotion of Sensible, Courteous, Off-Road Enthusiasts is Pennsylvania Trails Foundation primary objective. SCOREing a win for the Off-Road Community. With the new DCNR Grant and help from fifteen of our fine volunteers we visited eight counties across the state of Pennsylvania this season. The training locations ranged as far west as Allegheny, east to York, north to Pike, and south to Bedford counties with seven hundred and fifty youth being trained. The venues varied from a Boy Scout Jamboree, to a cycle shop Open House, to community street fairs, to a riding park Open House, and to our favorite, the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Youth Field Days. All of these events took place within a six month timeframe and made for another hectic summer for the PaOHV volunteers. Pennsylvania Trails Foundation would like to thank our dedicated volunteer work force for their commitment to promoting OHV safety: Eric Bruggeman, Bescimy Cossar, Desaray Cossar, Dwayne Cossar, Neil Dauber, George Fetterman, Kathie Kleckner, Sheldon Langer, Dennis Mann, Dave Miller, Francis Miller, Karen Miller, Steve Seltzer, Marty Wagner, and Mike Weatherby In addition to supporting the simulator events, the new grant is funding our web presence on Facebook. The link gives the public a view of the simulator training in action without leaving their home. Just go to https://www. facebook.com/PATrailsFoundation and follow us promoting OHV safety and training across Pennsylvania in 2019. *Chapter 77 Rules for ATV Safety Certificates 7725 Operation by Persons under age sixteen (c) Snowmobile and ATV safety certification.--No person 8 to 15 years of age shall operate an ATV and no person between 10 and 15 years of age shall operate a snowmobile in this Commonwealth unless the person satisfies one of the following conditions: (1) Is under the direct supervision of a certified snowmobile or ATV safety instructor during a safety training course. (2) Is on land owned or leased by a parent or legal guardian. (3) Has received safety training as prescribed by the department and has received the appropriate safety certificate issued by the department. (4) Holds an appropriate safety certificate issued under the authority of another state or Province of Canada and recognized by the department. (d) Failure to exhibit certificate. --Within five days of receiving notice of a violation of this section, a youthful operator shall present the appropriate safety certificate that was valid at the time of demand at the office of the issuing authority. Upon presentation of the safety certificate, the issuing authority shall dismiss the charge. O

The CMATVA Mileage Club was started in 2013. We keep track of every mile our members ride with our association. Then once a year we award the mileage bar that the members earned for that year in 250-mile intervals. Since we started the mileage club our members have rode over 240,940 miles. If you would like to join us for one of our association rides, check out the event calendar on our website at: http://cmatva.org/nv/index.php/portfolio We allow everyone a free ride with the association before they join to see what our association is all about. Visit our website to download forms for membership and association. ATV INITIATIVE Objective: Connect communities and four DCNR ATV Trail Systems in Northcentral PA to boost the economy through increased tourism. It was just four short years ago when some folks from the Central Mountains ATV Association and the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails met with the DCNR and other local legislators, tourism committees, business owners and residents to present their dream of creating a network of legal riding here in Pa like the Hatfield McCoy Trail System in WV.

Yes, her husband Tom worked long hours at the shop taking care of his customers, but Jane above. Stevie just couldn’t manage to drift off to sleep. was the one who kept the race schedules in order, kept all the gear clean, and also No wonder Stevie thought, Jake had been racing for over a year now, he’s used made sure there was plenty of food in the motorhome to feed the whole Warner to it. All Stevie could think about was getting to the race track and how the big day crew for the weekend. was almost here. Jane was used to going to the races, that is where she first met her husband Tom. Janes dad was a racer too, so she spent a lot of time at the race tracks when she It had been three months now since his Grand pappy Miller had brought it home. was a girl. The bright red motocross bike he had been wanting for years. Stevie had been riding and practicing on it every spare minute he had. It seemed like forever until he could get home from school to ride. Then there was the homework, and then “Let’s go gang,” Jane yelled through the house, “we have a four hour ride ahead of us.” The Warners piled into the motorhome one at a time. Pap Miller was already in the driver’s seat, Jake and Stevie’s dad Tom were just finishing up loading the gear, and Stevie’s mom was coming out of the house with her arms full of last minute items they needed or their trip. “Dad, did you strap my bike down really good?” Stevie asked. “Yes, son,,, your bike will be fine.” “Well I hope so, I don’t want anything happening to it before I get a chance to race it.” “Relax little brother,” Jake shouted from the back of the motorhome, “You’ll get the first chance to crash it up tomorrow morning when you hit the track.” Stevie thought to himself, “Great,,, I probably won’t be able to sleep tonight, either, just one more day till I get to show them who the best racer in the family really is.”

Usually, the Warners didn’t leave until the morning of the race. But this weekend, they were racing at the Shady Run MX Park over on the East side of the state. It was a long drive and practice started early Sunday morning, so they decided to leave a day ahead of time. Besides, Stevie couldn’t wait to get there and get ready for the biggest day of his life. The Warners arrived at the track late on Saturday afternoon. Stevie was the first one out of the motorhome and he was rip roaring to do everything at once. “Come on dad, lets unload the bikes,,, no,,, let’s go get signed up,,, Dad?,,, did you remember the race gas?” “Hey, settle down there partner, sign up didn’t even open yet,” chuckled Stevie’s dad. The Warners all had a job to do. They had all been to the races hundreds of times before, but today was a little different than other race days. It was about to be Stevie’s first race and they all gave Stevie a little extra attention, even Stevie’s big brother Jake. That night around the camp fire, the Warners talked about Stevie’s first race. About how exciting it was going to be, and how well he was going to do. Pap Miller told race stories about the old days when he used to race and about the time when SteBRAPP MAGAZINE February 2019

“OK gang, it’s time for bed. Everybody,,, and I mean EVERYBODY has a BIG day tomorrow.” Jane Warner commanded.

Stevie was anxious to go to bed, he knew the sooner he could get to sleep the sooner the morning would get here. As Stevie’s mom tucked him into bed, they talked about how much fun the next day was going to be and they both fell asleep lying there dreaming about Stevie’s first race. The race day started early at Shady Run, and Stevie woke up to the sound of race bikes revving and the smell of freshly made pancakes. Stevie was always up early at the races helping his dad Tom get the race bikes ready to go. Tom Warner wasn’t racing today. Tom usually rode in the Veteran class reserved for riders over 30 years old, but today was Stevie’s big day, and Tom decided to sit this race out. Stevie jumped out of bed and got dressed in less than a minute. As he headed for the front door of the motor home he was still trying to get his sneakers on. Stevie’s mom yelled from the kitchen, “Get over here Steve, and eat some breakfast.” “But mom,,,,!” “No buts Stevie, you’ve waited this long, 15 more minutes is not going to kill you.” Just about that time Stevie’s dad Tom came through the front door laughing, “Listen to your mom son, you need a good hot breakfast to get your day started right.” “But dad,,,,” Stevie pleaded,,,, “Let’s eat some pancakes son, then we’ll go get you signed up.” “OK dad,” Stevie sighed. ‘This is killing me’ Stevie thought.... By: Jim Bull A NEW SEASON HAS ARRIVED – ARE YOU READY

Here we go again with a new racing season upon us. If you’re like most, you probably haven’t ridden your bike a lot this past winter. Maybe you haven’t been to the gym much or you may have let your diet slack. Maybe none of that is true and you are in the best physical shape of your life, maybe your body is prepared but let’s face it, you’re still human and like a lot of us the emotions and mental strains that racing can cause are probably still there. I talk to a lot of racers that have been at it for years and like me, they still get butterflies in their stomach every time they line up at a gate, how about you? Isn’t life like this in general? Whenever we are facing a new season in life, we can experience excitement and anxiety over uncertainties. Fear of the unknown as they say. Whether its having to move up to the B class or starting a new job or bumping up a grade in school, you just never know, right? Let’s look to the Bible to see what it says about starting a new season:

“Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it?

If you read the above scriptures and believe that what God has promised us is true, then you shouldn’t have any fears about your new season. Whether it be on the race track or not, the scriptures prove that God will get you through. So when your hitting the track or tackling that new chore, look up, ask God to help you through it, and believe he will. After that, the rest is easy.
