Captains Quarters Happy 4th of July everybody - I know, fireworks, cookouts and days off work yes, but more importantly, it’s Independence Day. An Independence for our country that the proud citizens fought and died for so many years ago. What would happen today, more cookouts maybe?

When I googled Independence Day the first six pages of searches were about a movie where Aliens attacked our planet. Once I googled 4th of July I got this top response: On July 4, 1776, the thirteen colonies claimed their independence from England, an event which eventually led to the formation of the United States. Each year on July 4th, also known as Independence Day, Americans celebrate this historic event.

I would ask in this election year that you all consider this for a few moments while grilling out in your back yard. Ask yourself what you could do to be a patriot like those proud citizens so many years ago and please thank a veteran of our armed forces for the freedoms we enjoy today anytime you run into them.

As for the racing, yes we talk about that here too. This issue is again packed full of local racing action covering just about every discipline of off road competition available. Check out Flat Track racing from the BCTRA, check out hare scramble racing and the first ever ECEA Jr. Enduro, check out some Loretta Lynn Regional Qualifier action along with some great local motocross and check out a great off road fund raiser that raised a bunch of money for cancer research. How do you go wrong with all of that? Please don’t forget our “Where to Ride” sections, and upcoming events too and of course all of our great advertisers. My bet is that they have everything you need to get you through your riding season so please keep it local if you can.

This month also offers up a bunch a national caliber racing. First off our flat track friends are headed off to Du Quoin at the beginning of July for a week long of amateur national competition then our motocross friends are headed south to the famed Loretta Lynn Ranch for the Amateur Motocross Nationals. Best wishes to all and I guess that means next month’s issue is going to be ever better yet.

MDRA at Doublin Gap

May 29, 2016 LL Regional Warm Up By:Brapp Mag Staff Late May brought a huge crowd to the Doublin Gap Motocross Park for the fifth round of the 2016 MDRA Series. The weather had finally broke, offering sunshine and warm temperatures. The staff at Doublin had also made some major changes to their track just prior to this event in preparation for the upcoming Loretta Lynn NE Youth Regional qualifier. This not only attracted the series regulars but brought young racers from up and down the east coast to get a preview of the facility before the big race.

Track changes consisted of widening the track in several places to the adding of fresh track surface and a challenging rhythm section that lead into the finish line jump. Racers tried over and over to dial in this new section with some having success but depending on how you hit it, your approach needed to be different on each pass. Kudo’s to the track builders for coming up with a great challenge on the journey to see who will be the best of the best in 2016.

As I mentioned the youth divisions were crammed full and qualifiers had to be held for the Junior Mini division which was the last moto of the day. Many locals fared well but as I mentioned there was some great talent here for this event. It was any body’s ball game and those that came on this weekend would definitely have an advantage for the qualifier.

The adult racing offered great battles as well. In the expert divisions PA Natives Dakota Yohe and Timmy Crosby would take the top spots.

Yohe would work his way from the back to win the Open A division followed in second by Crosby with Crosby taking the win in the 250 A class.

School Boy racing was a whole different story with bike protests and highly contended battles in both divisions. In school Boy 1, 12 year old local Orion Gregory would end up with the O/A followed by Joshua Strickland from Zebulon, NC. Turns out both bikes were stock and they were followed by another local Seth Hammaker riding the Kawi Supermini bike. Talk about a kid who can get around a track. In the School Boy 2 division Strickland would come out on top followed by Maxwell Sanford and Logan Leitzel. If these battles are any indication of what the future holds for Pro racing we will all have smiles on our faces for years to come.

BCTRA Races Delta Fair Grounds May 28, 2016 By: Brapp Mag Staff

These old Bultacos define flat track racing

It was a beautiful night for short track racing on the Mason Dixon Line as the Baltimore County Trail Riders brought their show to town. May had been a very wet month so this break in the weather was very welcome to the racers and the promoters from the area. This particular event fell on the same weekend as the famed Springfield Mile so attendance was a little on the light side but those that came, definitely had racing on their mind.

The BCTRA took over this event in Delta, Pa a few years back and they actually run three events here each year with this night of racing being their second and the final will go down in late August after their Timonium summer outdoor series of events. The small short track has become a local favorite as many prepare for the Timonium events starting in Mid-July.

This evening saw great attendance in the youth classes which brings good news for the future of the sport. A total of 19 racers lined up in the 50cc divisions with eight kiddos lining up on the 65cc gates and another eight in the 85cc divisions. Of course the Sportsman and amateur classes always bring good competition and this night would be no different.

Next up for the BCTRA is the 2nd Annual Gary Nixon Invitational Race at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium on July 15th. ECEA Ridge Jr. Enduro Shatters ECEA Records!

Ridge Riders Club, Deposit NY, teamed up to put on two nearly flawless days for kids and adults! They set, and broke ECEA records, including a Ridge Run adult attendance record with 169 riders, and 44 Jr Enduro riders. That’s 213 racers on a weekend that had lots of adversity, including a weather forecast of 80% chance of thunderstorms and strong winds!! And a GNCC/WYONA event in same region, but the Enduro gods decided to show mercy on all and blessed racers with sun and fun!

What is a Jr Enduro? Glad u asked! Racers have to do a specific amount of laps, and the faster/older classes are required to do more laps. All racers can take breaks after each lap if they want. There is a start and finish “check point” that each rider gets timed when they enter and exit. There are no checks to “burn” and the only time keeping aspect is that they complete all their laps before the allotted time runs out. All Jr. Enduro racers receive a full size number plate trophy plaque.

All riders at Ridge had enough time to take several breaks, do repairs, talk with mom and dad and or wait for their friends to enter the next lap. Jr Enduros offer an enhanced social aspect among the kids as well as the parents! Riders start four at a time, but as the race goes on, the start check points usually thin out to two or three riders, consequentially, the “start” procedure is more relaxed than other forms of racing making it a great stepping stone for new racers. Most racers were able to finish their laps with time to spare and went out for unscored “Fun Laps”.

1:00 Pee Wee Racers had 90 minutes do their required laps. Winners included overall winner Max Williams 7-8 LC Sr Class, Hunter Gardner 7-8 Air, and Parker Arm 4-6 Air. 3:00 Youth and Junior racers had 120 minutes to do their laps. Overall winner Jeffrey Macknik 14-15 Super, Tyler Cetrino 12-13 Super, Ian Weismen 12-15 85, Mackenzy Robbins 12-15 Sr. Girls, Thomas Von Schaisoha 11-15 4 Stroke, Kyle Grenewicz 7-11 85, Raymond Grenewicz 7-11 65, Caleb Baltimore 7-9 65, Ryder Sigety 7-10 Trail.

Best battle(s) of the day was actually a tie! First battle was for Four Stroke Class racers Thomas Von Schalscha and Ryan Botsford. This was Tom’s first race ever and Ryan is new to racing too. Both had their chains fall off twice and in the end they tied times! But when the seconds were tabulated, Tom came out on top. The other battle was between Josh Klouchek & Kenito Held in the highly contested 85CC class. They also tied on the amount of minutes with Josh eeking out Kenito only by just seconds.

He and his parents wanted to donate his used Cobra 50 cc motorcycle to a random family in order to pass down his love for motorcycles and impact another family with the love of riding or racing.

SUMMER AND WINTER TRAILS The summer season runs from the Friday before Memorial Day through the last full weekend in September. The winter season runs from the day following the last day of the regular or extended antlerless deer season as established by the Game Commision through the following April 1.

There are some trails that remain closed until after the late muzzleloader season. Please check the forest distrcit web pages for current access advisories on when trails open for the winter season.

Pike County - Burnt Mills - 7 Miles of summer and winter trail. Access is from a parking area on Route 402 one mile south of Porters Lake. Rgistered Class II ATV’s are permitted on this trail that are less that 58” in width and less than 1,200 pounds. Adams & Cumberland Counties - 36 miles of summer trail. During the winter season the trail system is expanded to 42 miles by using some dirt roads that are gated during the winter. Part of the trail system is shared with snowmobiles when there is sufficient snowfall. The trail is located between Big Flat and Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Access to these are from parking lots located at Big Flat along Shippensburg Road about 1-1/4 miles nort of its intersection with Route 233 and on Piney Mountain along Bendersville Road south of Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Snyder & Union Counties - 15.4 miles of summer and winter trails. Access is at the Jacks Mountain Trailhead located along Route 235 three miles south of Glen Iron. The trail includes the East Kettle Road which has been closed to other types of motor vehicles. WHERE TO RIDE Allegheny National Forest - The federally-operated Allegheny National Forest has more than 100 miles of ATV trails. ATV trail season runs from the Friday before Memrial Day through the last Sunday in September. Winter season is from December 20 to April 1. Contact the Allegheny Nation Forest Supervisor’s Office, P.O. Loop 1 starts at the 7 Mountains Campground, located just south of Potters Mill or west of Milroy on Route 22/322. Compensation for Campground owner for parking strongly recommended. I know many from our area have already qualified in other regions and the South East will be run by this printing but after this particular race.

Over 900 riders made their way to the Doublin Gap MX Park in Shippensburg, PA to take a shot for their entry ticket. I saw one class winner traveled the whole way from Utah to make the cut. It was a typical qualifier and good preparation for Tennessee, hot and dusty and great competition. Kudo’s to the promoter for keeping everything running smoothly and for offering a great track for this event.

If Your Goal Is To Finish Top 10 at Loretta’s This Year Then You Need To Read This Story!!

Now that’s a worthy goal - but I would ask you this. Why isn’t your goal to “Win all your motos at Loretta’s this year”?

Some may tell you that is unrealistic, who do you think you are, that there have only been a few people to ever do that, that other racer is much faster than you.

PROVEN FACT:

YOU’RE BRAIN CAN’T TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOMETHING YOU IMAGINE OR SOMETHING THAT REALLY HAPPENS. (PLEASE READ THAT PART AGAIN) I can tell you this. I’ve interviewed a lot of racers over the last 15 years and it seems every time I ask a racer what their goals are they either say “I want to finish top 10 or top 5 at such and such an event or in this particular race”. And guess what happens, that’s exactly what they do, or sometimes worse.

Only ONCE has anyone ever told me that “I’m going there to win it”. And guess what ... SHES WINNING! (See K. Benson Racer Review in previous issue)

What if just once you said to yourself - I’m winning that thing and deep down inside you really believed you could. Can you imagine what might happen?

Now I’ll throw my disclaimer out here. I know that not everyone who races is doing it because they absolutely feel they have to be the winner. One of the most important aspects of doing anything in life is to enjoy the experience, to have fun and be the best you can be, and I absolutely agree.

However this article is geared towards the racer who is chasing the dream, to win the National Championship, to go Pro and make it work.

You’ll have many naysayers and doubters. They might even be in your own family or on your friends list. They dont mean you any harm, well most don’t.

They just don’t fully understand how our brains work.

You can ride all you want, you can work out every day, you can have all the right equipment and you can eat all the right foods, but if you’re brain isn’t dialed in, you aren’t going to win.

You have the same opportunities to win the big one as anybody else. You put your boots on just like the next guy, it doesn’t matter if his are newer than yours. It doesn’t matter if you just broke up with your boyfriend or girlfriend, it doesn’t matter what anybody thinks or says but you… You can win this thing, if you believe you can.

There is no way I can fit this lesson all in this column, but I promise you this, if you go to my website and download and print the entire article. Then read it and follow the instructions in it - you will finish better at the big race.

Here’s the best part - it doesn’t cost you a dime, it will be the easiest part of your training that you will ever do and it will absolutely make you a champion, both on and off the bike.

One of the great things about motocross is spending time with family. One of the greatest things about spending time with family is when everyone gets along. I have seen many family’s look ok at the track but sometimes in life things aren’t all that they appear from the outside in. At the end of the day, and at the end of this life, we really only have relationships. Love is truly the most important thing.

A true friend or the true love of a family member is not when we give people everything they want, and agree with everything they say, but it is when we choose to be selfless rather than selfish. For example, when you stop and truly think of what your wife needs from you as a husband, or what your mom would enjoy from her son.

1 Corinthians 13 in the Bible tells us that love is not self-seeking, as well as many other beautiful things we all enjoy when shown to us.

The hard thing is when we need to show love to someone else and put our need second to their need.

HOW you ask? JESUS told the disciples that he would not leave them alone but that He would send His Spirit to be with and in them.

In the book of Acts we learn a lot about the Holy Spirit; mainly that people need two things: 1.

Faith in JESUS as Messiah, the One God, sent to die for the sins of the whole world.

2. The Holy Spirit for power in everyday life.

Read Acts 8 or 10 and even Acts 19. You will see accounts of people coming to faith in Christ and receiving The Holy Spirit.

We can’t “do Holy” without the Holy Spirit; so ask JESUS into your heart, receive His forgiveness, and give Him your life and future.

Ask God to fill you up with His Spirit that you might have power to overcome the flesh, and Satan in your everyday love walk with family and friends. This world is increasingly dark so we need to stick together in Love.

2nd Annual Cancer Fundraiser Ride Mountain Ridge ATV Written by: Kristy Swintosky

For the second year in a row, off road enthusiasts gathered for the Western PA SXS & ATV 2nd Annual Cancer Sucks Ride. Despite the below average temperatures and rainy forecast, 650 riders and passengers assembled on May 14th at Mountain Ridge ATV Park in Central City, Pennsylvania, an increase of 250 people from last year. Riders came from all over the country and even from as far as Canada! Over $14,000 was raised for the American Cancer Society for cancer research! The amount more than tripled from last year’s total! Participants were pleased with the variety of giveaways of the more than 30 raffles held. Event organizer, Bobbi Jo Steffey collected items from ATV and SXS businesses from all over the country such as Quad Boss, Extreme Metal Products, SuperATV, Side By Side Stuff, and Pro Armor just to name a few! Steffey believes this was a big contributor to the success of the event. “I am overwhelmed with not only the turnout but how generous everyone has been. I’m thrilled such a large group of riders can get together to show the positive effects that

ATV enthusiasts can add to a community.” Mountain Ridge ATV Park was a perfect venue to use. “Manager, Rob Foy, was great to work with and really went out of his way to help us any way he could to make the event a success.” Their trails provide a mix of riding that fits any rider’s style.

They have over 2,500 acres, trails rated at different difficulty levels, from beginner trails to extreme rock climbing, mud pits, and hills that can challenge the best riders. Although I am not sure the mud pits were necessary today as every trail you rode on was extremely muddy! The local fire company in Sipesville even benefited from the event. They were on hand to provide a rinse-off after the muddy adventures of the day for a small donation. First time rider to Mountain Ridge ATV Park Shawn Swintosky was thankful for having them on site at the end of his ride. “I have been in line for 20 minutes waiting to get my Razors cleaned up but it is worth the wait. My machine is caked in mud from top to bottom.”

PAGODA MC BIRDSBORO, PA JUNE 18-19, 2016 The racers from MAMA migrated North last month as they found themselves at the Pagoda Motorcycle Club for their next round of racing. Blue skies and warm temperatures greeted the MAMA faithfuls as they made their way into PA for a great weekend of racing.

I always enjoy this round as the regulars from the series get to meet some new competition that race on a regular basis at this facility.

I’d like to give a shout out to a young Pagoda member Cody Hegeman that captured his first win since being on 50’s at this Father’s Day race. Both of Cody’s parents are instrumental in making things happen at the club and I know they are proud of their son’s accomplishment, so way to go Hegeman!

District 6 legend Barry Carsten and his son Cory also showed up on the day along with another Pagoda regular Cole Gable. All three showed their presence against some of MAMA’s best.
