Captains Quarters

In This Issue:

Hey everybody and welcome to the June issue of Brapp Magazine. It really doesn’t feel like June to me but sure enough here we are. The racing season is in full swing as we continue to race around the rain drops and the cool temperatures with hopes of some summer like weather in the very near future. In this issue find motocross racing from the MDRA, MAMA and Pagoda MC plus harescramble and enduro action from the ECEA and the opening round from our harescramble friends in western NY. We also have some vintage trials action along

MAMA ROUND 2 SFMX

with a street bike review and off road riding with the CMATVA club. As we move through the year please watch for expanding coverage into the off road arena as well as some on road action plus racer interviews and public interest articles. Watch for new layouts and features and possibly even a print piece again. Speaking of print we would value any feedback on whether this would be something you’d like to see back. We get lots of action on our digital platforms but it seems we keep getting requests for the old standby - the printed newspaper of days gone by. We ask that you would please contact us with any thoughts on the subject. Moving into June we have a full schedule of big events including both the youth and adult NE regional qualifiers for Loretta Lynns along with some really big hare scrambles and Enduro competitions. Speaking of enduros make sure you check out the ECEA Jr Sprint Enduro Series that is gaining steam in only its second full season. (see the ECEA ad in this issue) The end of the month will also bring us the big MAMA vs MDRA Shootout and RORR’s Tough Event which is always a hoot to check out. Well that about does it for now. Please as always check out our photo and video pages and we ask if you haven’t already to download our free phone app by searching BrappMag on your phones app store. There you have access to all our photos and videos plus upcoming event schedules, where to ride and race info and just about anything you need right at your fingertips 24/7. We ask also that you let our advertisers know that you are seeing their ads in our pages and please do business with them as often as you can. Jim Bull and Family - BrappMag.com

Invitation to Participate in the PA Motorsports Summit & Legislative Reception State Capitol in Harrisburg, PA June 13, 2017 Last fall we held a very successful Motorsports Rally at the State Capitol in Harrisburg. The Legislature has invited us to return again this year to meet more of the PA Racing Industry. Mark your calendar for Tuesday June 13th from 1:00pm - 6:30pm as we invite you participate in the PA Motorsports Summit & Legislative Reception at the State Capitol in Harrisburg. There is no cost to the event, but we need as many industry participants as possible to attend. When we asked the tracks and businesses who have already registered why they felt they couldn’t miss this event. Here’s what they said... I want my Elected Officials working for me not against me. Discovering how the Economic Benefits of my track or business can secure more sponsorship, car counts, and grow my fan base is something we want to learn. We will make valuable connections with racing industry peers to strengthen our industry and grow our business. You probably have similar reasons why you want to attend the PA Summit. Let’s make 2017 a year we take control of the future of motorsports in PA! The USMA will be setting up one-on-one meetings between yourself and your state reps. This provides an opportunity to tell your story directly to your public officials. We need time to schedule appointments with your legislators, so the sooner you register the more valuable the event will be! Register at: https://www.unitedstatesmotorsports.com/pa-motorsports Look forward to seeing you there!

Boyesen Mini Cup Shootout Rolls Into Pagoda MC

Cole Bader #5c pulls a Boyesen holeshot and races to the win

BY: JOHN SHERER III Christian Merman #19 65cc 7-9 Boyesen holeshot winner.

The weekend of May 20-21 enticed mini riders in many classes to line up to compete in the Boyesen Mini Cup Shootout. Boyesen, a major sponsor on the local motocross scene offered new MX tires to the riders who could pull off the holeshot in each of their motos. This added a little extra excitement at the gate for the young riders. 250C also offered a lot of anticipation as 33 riders lined up at the gate and shot off into the first turn in moto one, some made it through the may lay while others did not. The first Boyesen mini challenge on the line was 65cc (7-9). As the gate fell and riders charged full throttle into turn one it was Christian Merman #19 on his KTM crossing that so cherished holeshot line to win the new rear mx tire and in the laps to follow Christian held Klark Robbins #62 rolling on to take 1st place and into 1st place on his cobra. the checkered flag. The second Boyesen mini challenge to leave the gate were the riders in the 65cc (10-11) group. Braxton Keiffer #331 rolled his Husqvarna over the holeshot line holding off the #06 of Jude Smerlick on a KTM and Alfred Turjan III #510 on a KTM to take home the knobby. In Jr Mini (9-13) the rest of the field watched Cole Bader #5c on a KTM take the holeshot and run the rest of the four lap moto out front. Wyatt Rotz #166 on his Suzuki just couldn’t reel in Bader but finished a strong 2nd.

250C packed 33 riders into the gate and if you were lucky enough to be out in front of the pack you were able to avoid the tangled mess coming out of turn one. It looked worse than it was as no major injuries were incurred, but was scary to watch however. As the laps counted down Chase Stehman #50 fought off #5 Parker Noss and Alex Thomas #76 to meet the checkered flag. A dominating performance for #91 Orion Gregory in 125cc to Open Two Stroke, Orion timed the gate perfectly, pulled the holeshot and held off heavy pursuit from #76 Alex Thomas and #51 Keagan Miller to roll to a 1st place finish. This is a quick summary of some of the action from the racing at Pagoda MC. To see all the results visit (tracksideresults.com/pagoda) or better yet check the schedule and plan on attending one of the races yet to come this season. It’s just heating up!! B Ricky Deck #36 and Seth Hammaker #510 in bar to bar action in 250 B.

The 50cc (4-6) stock riders not to be overlooked tried to chase down Timmy Scott Jr. #432 on his KTM who traveled all the way from West Virginia to pick up his 1st place finish. 50cc (7-8) stock was won by Klark Robbins #62 on a Cobra. After Supermini (12-15) shot out of the gate it took two laps too sort things out. When the dust had cleared #22x Robbie Bathgate had risen to the top of the field to finish 1st. Seth Hammaker #510 tore it up Supermini winner #22x in two classes, School Boy Robbie Bathgate (14-16) and 250B. Seth held off a fierce run from both #91 Orion Gregory and #10 Gage Stine who both fell just short finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. 250B challengers Brandon Albright #341 and Ricky Deck #36 tried to shut the door on Seth but he was just a little faster on this Sunday.

MDRA MX Racing at Doublin Gap MX Park

SHIPPENSBURG, PA MAY 6-7, 2017 In early May we headed out to the beautiful foothills of south central PA to catch Round #3 of the Mason Dixon Riding Associations 2017 motocross series at Doublin Gap MX Park. Doublin Gap is another one of those places that has been around for years and loves to cater to the needs of motorcycle riders and racers. This weekend also brought lots of rain on Friday and Saturday prior to Sunday’s race day but the years of experience from these track builders proved for a great racing surface on Sunday after the rains ceased. Rough yes, but not the soup bowl that you may have found at some other places.

Senior racers leave the gate.

This series offers racing for both the young and old, novice to expert and men and women alike. Age classes start at just 4 years old and go right through 50 plus and that’s years, not cc’s. Matter of fact many national champions have been cut from these ranks and still are to this day. Doublin Gap is also biker friendly and they offer a $5 admission to anyone who rides in on a street bike. If you or your group is looking for a great Sunday ride you can head on out to the track where racing generally kicks off by about noon or so. You’ll get to experience up to 20 classes of racing that can run up to 4 or 5 in the afternoon. Spectating is friendly here and concessions are available. Their next race falls on June 24-25th and you can find their full schedule at: www.doublingap.com or head over to our website at: www. brappmag.com for all the local racing.

The racing was this close all day.

It’s a great way to get some miles on the bike and enjoy an afternoon of racing while helping to support this great form of entry level motorcycling. Hey maybe you have a youngster or two that you’d like to get some experience before they hit the open road in years to come. No better way to teach them great bike skills and sportsmanship at the same time. We hope to see you there. B

RIDE REVIEW

BMW R NineT Scrambler Courtesy of Velocity Cycles Mechanicsburg, Pa By Jim Bull

Check out Velocity Cycles for all your Honda, BMW and Genuine Scooter needs! I guess one would find it hard to believe that in 37 years of riding street motorcycles that I would have at some point swung my leg over a BMW, especially working in the industry. I imagine growing up in a Harley town and working in a multi franchise Japanese brand dealership may have been a reason. If you guys have been following along you noticed last month that Velocity Cycles in Mechanicsburg, PA helped me realize a long time dream of riding a big Honda Adventure Bike. So this month when shop owner Chris Cuomo asked me what I wanted to ride the answer was simple. I said just put me on that Beemer I liked which is slang for the BMW brand. Matter of fact when I went to ride the Africa Twin last month this machine caught my eye and I was almost intrigued more by the Scrambler then the bike I had come to ride. Anyhow this month I got my chance and what a ride it was. This bike is powered by the legendary BMW opposed twin that offers up 1200cc of highly usable torque. I was always curious about the power curve of these highly popular machines and after a few miles I was grinning ear to ear. As I mounted the bike it seemed a bit top heavy but I found it not to be the case as I headed off towards the mountains of central PA. Again, Chris said she’s yours for the day so we pointed her north and hit the road. This model line of bikes which includes five different versions is based off of the legendary BMW R 80 G/S which was introduced way back in 1980 and took the motorcycle world by storm. It was designed as a touring motorcycle that had both on and off road capabilities.

Today you can buy this bike in the R Nine T, the Scrambler, the Urban GS, the Pure and the Racer versions. All very similar yet designed for different looks and purposes. Today we took the Scrambler and tried her out in traffic, on the highway and my favorite for this machine, some nice twisty back roads. I found this bike most comfortable riding between 50 and 60 mph in fifth or 6th gear and preferable with no traffic in view. The bike had a comfortable riding position, handled like a dream and had all the torque and acceleration one would need. Oh and trust me the ABS braking system with those huge disc rotors really get the job done when you need them. My suggestion, if you like the cool design of today’s modern scrambler, don’t like to pull much maintenance and love to ride the backroads then this is a bike you need to take a look at. Even on the highway it cruised well at 65 - 70 mph and didn’t beat you up like some standards would.

WNYOA Harescramble Opener Dream Riders Newfield, NY - April 30, 2017 By: Tiffany Merritt @TErvinPhotography

After a six month winter break, the new and improved WNYOA Championship series had their first race of the season, Dream Riders at Mazourek Farms, promoted by Jim Steiner and his family. If you’re unfamiliar with WNYOA, it is one of the largest bike and quad hare scramble series. It is based out of the New York area. We have racers from the age of 4-70+ years old. WNYOA is a very close series, and when you come to a WNYOA event you will be instantly treated like part of the family. Back to the race day. The start of the day was cold, the sky looked like at any moment it was going to hammer down with rain, but thankfully it held off at the track. The turnout for round one was simply amazing with 842 Racers who were surrounded by friends, family, and other race spectators. I talked to few different quad and bike riders today to get their intel on the track. John Sousa Jr. Vet B Quad rider said “This was my first time at Dream Riders, and the track layout was awesome, like all the other WNYOA tracks I’ve raced. This had a bit of everything, some great elevation changes, some mud, some fast field sections and also some tight, open woods sections.” John continued to tell me about how his day went for him. Kaleb Chilson was the Overall Pee Wee Quad winner for Round one

“I made some passes quick to get into the lead around the 2-3 mile marker and from there i just put my head down to try and get a gap on the riders behind me and work towards a good overall finish. After scanning in for the start of lap two I ended up crashing pretty bad just after the finish line. Luckily, I wasn’t hurt and was able to get going again. I wasn’t sure at that point if I still maintained the lead after finishing lap two and I saw I was still 1st in class so just tried to stay consistent for the final two laps.” John ended up taking first in his class and 31st overall.

Up next I was able to talk to Sam Craft (a 250 B Bike rider) about what he thought of the track and how his day went. “ It was my first time riding in a few weeks and I wasn’t expecting to go out and win. My start wasn’t terrible but I made a few rookie mistakes which came from not being on the bike. I kind of expected it since I only got one ride in since the South Carolina NEPG Enduro in February. The first two laps I was getting mistakes out of the way and on the very beginning of my third lap I realized that I had a flat rear. I ended up riding the last two laps on it which obviously cost me a bit of time and ended up finishing 21st out of about 30 something. Not what I was hoping for but can’t complain too much. But the track was a lot of fun. I always look forward to riding the Dream Rider track. It’s a fairly open track with a couple technical places. The logging trails are the perfect way to find a rhythm and make some passes and the course is always clearly posted and marked”

Toby was on a mission to win today starting from the second line he was able to win the supermini 12-13 class and take the O/A for Mini bikes

Kraft coming through just after the finish had a tough day but will ready for battle at round 2

After taking a hard Crash, John was able to recover nicely with the win in Vet B

Robbie Pecorari who races a Can Am 4x4 in the Jr A line describes the first race as “always interesting, the anticipation of getting the season started and seeing who you will be lining up against always gets the nerves going.” Pecorari continues “Luckily, I was able to get the hole shot and keep everyone behind me to take the Jr A win and a 7th overall. The track was fun. The weather was great. Not to muddy or dusty. Anytime there was an issue on track it seemed that the WNYOA track officials were there taking care of what they needed to but all in all the event was put on very well.” Lastly I talked to Doug Higgins Jr. a College B quad rider who described his day as “not how he wanted to start the season” Higgins continued, “so I wanted to come out and start it with a good finish but that didn’t quite happen. I caught a kicker on lap two and went head over heels down a steep downhill and knocked myself out cold but I somehow managed to get up and finished the lap and got 19th. As for the track I thought it awesome and crazy fast, there were a few tight and technical areas but for the most part it was a very fast track” After hearing the stories of Sundays race, I think that it is safe to say though some riders may have taken a hard spill, in the end Round One at Dream Riders was a successful event. Up next for WNYOA in June is the Tomahawk GNCC on 6/10-11, then the Black Sky H.S. on 6/18. For more information on those races and complete results from all events check out the WNYOA website at www.wnyoa.net B

Higgins in white took a leap over this divit that gave many riders an issue today Brock Vanderpool from the College C class makes it through also with out any issues.

Pecorari took the lead early and was able to hold every one off during the 90 minute battle through the woods.

White Rose Motorcycle Club Willie Gall Memorial 43rd Annual Observed Trials Event Saturday, May 6, 2017 - Jefferson, PA

Click Here To View MORE PHOTOS

The WRMC is now in its 65th year operating from their club grounds in southern York County, PA. They are probably best known for hosting AMA National Hillclimbs but they are also very involved in observed trials competition and they hold several swap meets and bike shows each year on their grounds. Matter of fact in 2013 they started the AMA District 6 Trials Hall of Fame at their club house and they induct two members each year, some who have been instrumental in getting the sport started here in America. They are part of the Mid Atlantic Vintage Trials Series which helped host this Saturday event. Most bikes are 1970’s - 80’s vintage and they throw in a few modern classes just for kicks. If you don’t know, observed trials is the art of riding your motorcycle up and over obstacles while retaining your balance. You only gain points by touching your foot to the ground and the idea is to get as many clean runs as you can without doing so. The guy or gal with the most points at the end of the day loses - yes that’s right. The fewer points, the better you did. The course is set up with eight different sections and each rider has to complete each section four times throughout the day. On this particular day Mother Nature came at us hard and put rain down on the course for the day prior and day of the event. Most riders struggled and out of the 59 entries 28 riders had DNF’s or did not finish. As I was shooting pictures in the one section that started downhill I heard a rider state it best. He said it’s like trying to ride in soft ice cream. Even the expert riders couldn’t control their machines in this downhill start which forced many to just call it a day. Enjoy a few pictures here and the day’s results and if you want to see more you can head on over to www.brappmag.com. White Rose has a full schedule of biker friendly events each and every year and you can find more information on their website at: www.whiterosemc.org B

I mean, life on this earth is just temporary and sometimes so challenging but the word on the street teaches us that we are all here for a reason. Do you ever wonder what your purpose is, or why you are even here? There is no reason known to humanity that I’m even still alive after the life I’ve led unless there is a bigger plan for me, a mission to fulfill, a difference to make.

I guess the big question for all of is, have we figured out what that is yet and if we have, are we sold out to it? This can apply to your home life, your job and most importantly the world around you or maybe even what you’re doing at the track. Now I guess there are some of you that believe that we are just here and then we die and I don’t get that because its not what my belief is. I’m also not here to try and change your belief; I would just ask you to reflect on your life and everything that happens around you and ponder whether or not it can all be for nothing. Here’s what the Bible says: - Jeremiah 29:11 ESV For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. - Proverbs 16:9 ESV The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. For those of you who do believe that God created you for a purpose then I’ll ask you - have you pondered what that purpose is? I know it’s difficult, we are always searching for that answer and I personally believe that I have found it but won’t always acknowledge it because its not always what I want for my life. How about you, do you know why you’re here and are you sold out to it if you do? I would challenge everyone to search, to pray, to follow those nudges from the Holy Spirit and discover what your true purpose in life is then sell out to it, to give it everything you’ve got and to make a difference not only in your life but in the world around you. South Penn Enduro Riders Ox Bo Hare scramble Frackville, Pa - May 20-21, 2017

Jerod Stoner mounts up to win the Sportsman division

MORE PHOTOS

Another great event pulled off by the ECEA and SPER in the mountains of PA. Over 600 riders came out to participate in the annual Skip Stoner Memorial event. Skip was a South Penn member and just one of the individuals who was a key driving force in launching the ECEA H.S. Series so many years ago. Skip and his family were huge supporters over the years and we thank them all for their generosity and time. Unfortunately Skip left us way too early in his life and to his memory this event is dedicated.

six of the nine laps but had bike issues the entire race with his bike constantly stalling. Turns out Carter had a grounding issue and actually pushed his bike over the finish line to finish third O/A behind Ryder Sigety and race winner Hunter Gardner. Another great battle on the day would come in the Youth 85 (7-11) division between Nathan Dulaney and Cooper Jones who would win the race. At times only seconds separated the two during the entire four laps with the biggest gap being at the end by eight seconds.

The weekend started off cold and rainy on Saturday as the Pee Wee racers took the course. The action was red hot in this race as young Carter Przemelewski would lead

Another highlight of the weekend was to see Jerod Stoner mount up and race in the Sportsman division after being off the race track for two years. Jerod would cruise to

the win just like in the old days and it was a joy to see this in a race dedicated to his father. Below see some of Jerod’s thoughts about the day. Jerod Stoner - former AA racer and ECEA Grand Champion I would have loved to race against the guys on the AA line but lining up on the Sportsman line was great. The smells, the energy, everything felt great. Everyone was very supportive all weekend and understood I just was out there to ride my bike. The start was good. A few guys really wanted the holeshot so I ended up 2nd out of the gate and got by the leader before getting in the woods. I just rode my pace and tried to stay smooth. I knew I had about a lap and a half to hammer down then would have to ease up with traffic. Starting on the AA line, you can be a

little pushy with the lap traffic because it is the premier class but running Sportsman you have to be a lot more patient because it is just a fun class. The traffic wasn’t bad luckily and I just made a few mistakes during the race. It was a good weekend and I’m glad I did it. Part of me would have liked to see what I had against the top guys in the afternoon but then again, I’m in one piece from the weekend and enjoyed not only the morning race but catching up with all the friends I haven’t seen in the motorcycle industry all year. We also got to chat with a few others about their race weekend at the Ox Bo: Griere Moir - O/A Junior winner talking about his race Griere is from Randallstown, MD and he’s been notching wins all year. He said he got the holeshot then fell on the first lap. He was able to get

Jaden wouldn’t be the only Palmer winning on this day either. Younger brother Landon who’s been hard at it got his first win ever today racing in the (4-6) 50cc Jr./LC division, looks like maybe he’s been studying his big brothers techniques. The youth division gave us a great race too with a big battle for first between Reece Bruner, Max Fernandez and Michael Beeler with Jeffrey Macknik throwing a wheel in now and then to keep them all honest. In the end it would be Beeler with the win and about a 20 second advantage. Sunday brought over 500 entries to the National at Tri County. The Lafferty boys were at it again racing against some of the best riders the east coast has to offer. Ryder and Michael must have been locked wheel to wheel as not more than 3 seconds separated them at any point in the race. MAMA MX Round # 3 NJ Field Of Dreams 4/29/2017

Scott Clark continues to dominate the expert divisions

Late April took us to the sands of South Jersey for more great motocross racing action with the MAMA organization. This group has been around for over 40 years now catering to racers of all ages and skill levels with emphasis put on the youth riders of our sport. It’s been tough getting into a steady flow this season with all the extreme cold and wet weather. This weekend brought a mix of sunshine, wind, rain but fortunately some bearable temperatures. The Saturday racing brought us dusty conditions to ride because the rain threatened early but didn’t come so water was laid down and then it rained Saturday night making for muddy conditions early on Sunday. Racers however always prevail and push through so yet another round is in the books. Please see some images along with the top five finishers here then head over to: www.mamamx.com to see the full results and then www.brappmag.com to see images from all classes too. Remember to keep all the info you need at your fingertips along with pics and video coverage from events by downlaoding the BrappMag phone app. Just search BrappMag on your phones app store and you’re in. CMATVA Spring Dice Run Central Mountains ATV Association, held their 4th Annual CMATVA Spring Dice Run at Snow Shoe Rails to Trails on April 29th 2017. This annual event began because CMATVA was looking for a way to raise funds for signage for the townships who have opened their roads to ATV’s. Central Mountain ATV Assoc. and Snow Show Rails to Trails decided three years ago that the two organizations worked so well together that they would merge their events together. The 4th Annual CMATVA Spring Dice Run and SSRTA Spaghetti Dinner was sponsored by Truck Stuff and More LLC located in Bellefonte, PA (truckstuffandmore.com). Truck Stuff and More donated the prize money for the high and low roll winners ($200 each). The event started by having 11 club members set up at five different stations on the Snow Show trail system. At registration participants were given a score card to record their dice rolls throughout the ride with the goal of having the highest or lowest total from all five stops. Ninety-eight riders participated in the ride this year and all seemed to enjoy the event. Cory Wagner of Lock Haven, PA was the high roller winner, with a 69, and Patti Pieja of Mohnton, PA won the low roller, with a 42. Congratulations to both winners! We thank all 98 riders that helped make our annual dice run a success. CMATVA selected 12 potential local charities for whom to split the proceeds of the dice ride and after a club vote, Henry Sorgen, club president presented a check in the amount of $567.50 to the Clinton County SPCA. CMATVA would also like to thank SSRTA (ssrt.org) for allowing us to hold this ride on their great trail system. Larry and Trilby Mayes and their team do an excellent job keeping the annual fee at the reasonable amount of $20.00/machine to ride a great trail that is well maintained and is open every day of the year. A special thanks to Ed Eisenhower, CMATVA Vice President, and all of our members that worked the event and made it such a success. If you haven’t had a chance to check out what CMATVA is all about, please visit our web site cmatva.org, visit our album page to see some of our past rides and events and check out the events page with our calendar of events with some details on each event. CMATVA offers 2+ guided rides a month for a family membership cost of $15.00/year, and if you sign up before March 1st you also receive your membership to PAOHV. Members of CMATVA also receive discounts at most of the local dealerships within a 75 mile radius of Lock Haven, PA. We are a family friendly ATV association that promotes safe ATV riding and respect the trails we ride on and the communities who allow us to ride through. We do not have a need for speed, but do enjoy having fun playing in mud holes and doing hill climbs in the different play areas when we stop for breaks. Please consider becoming a member of our club--We would love to see you at our next event! Henry Sorgen, President of CMATVA
