Captains Quarters Hey everybody and welcome to our Motorama follow up issue for 2016. I have to say that although we did have a few nasty spells, winter seemed to move right along this year. I never really got that, is it over yet feeling. Anyway, spring is here, Motorama is in the books and it’s time to get on with the outdoor season. Speaking of Motorama, what a great job everybody did this year. I’ve been attending that show almost since their beginnings and I think that every year it runs smoother and the action just keeps getting better. So kudo’s to the promoters, the workers, the tons of volunteers, the vendors and of course the racers. Without you all, there wouldn’t be a show. See some race coverage here in our pages and be sure to check out “The Sign Pics” on page 9 of this issue. That leads us to the outdoor season here in the region. We are very fired up here at BrappMag to bring you the best coverage available. Between our print, photo, video and online entities our goal is to help the sport grow while supporting the racers, promoters and power sports related businesses from the area. Thanks to the promoters this year for working together and coming up with a schedule that allows you to attend more events and us to provide more race coverage. For 2016 we already have over 50 events in our schedule. You’ll find us at MAMA, MDRA and District 6 motocross events. We’ll be at many ECEA hare scrambles and a few enduros, and we’ll also feature the NEOC rounds along with a few of the National Hare Scrambles. You’ll find flat track coverage, rider interviews, event schedules, info on where to ride and info on recreational riding opportunities and events around the region. Whew!! Again our goal is to be your source for everything you need to ride and race successfully in the coming season. Please read our print pages and keep an eye on our website on a regular basis. There you will find more images and videos from events we attend, matter of fact you can link to every photographers website from the area, so no matter where you race, you’ll find it on BrappMag.com. Keep an eye there for race results as well as extended deals from our advertisers and be sure to sign up for our email newsletter which will feature exclusive Brapp Mag content. You can also read our full issue online every month by clicking the cover image on our website. Well, I guess that’s about it for now. Pray for good spring racing weather and we’ll see you at Tomahawk for the Loretta Lynn Area Qualifier to kick off the season. B

Chaplains Corner Jesus Changes Lives and Results Hello Brapp Fans and welcome to the beginning of a new racing season. I’m sure many of you are excited and ready to continue to build on your past results at the track and then I’m guessing there may be some who are looking to get the past season behind you and are seeking to find better results in the new year. You know racing like life is full of second chances to start over and seek something better or something new. No matter what your past results were or what may have occurred in your life there’s always an opportunity to start over. In racing it may be new equipment or the repairing of old. It could be a new training program or a change in your diet to help you succeed. Some say that maybe attitude or the way you think about things could have a better effect.

Let’s look to the Bible and see what God has on the subject of improving or becoming new and then we’ll relate it to becoming a better racer.
2 Corinthians 5:17 says - Anyone who is joined to Christ is a new being; the old is gone, the new has come. From my past experience, from the very day that I asked Jesus to come into my life I became a new person and I got better results in everything that I did. As I dug into the scriptures more I learned about hope and faith and my life took on a new meaning. Just like in racing, we need to have hope that we’re going to be able to clear that double jump and have faith that our equipment is in the proper working order to get the job done. Now this doesn’t mean that we as humans don’t have to put the effort in to make sure those things happen. It just means that we have a higher power beside us and guiding us to get the job done. I’d say if you’re looking for better or different results in any area of your life to take a look at Gods word and apply the principles you find there. Pray for the things that you are looking for in your life and believe that God will help you accomplish them. For prayer or if you have any questions on how to ask Jesus into your life you can contact us on our Facebook page at:

Jaden Palmer Wins Dallas Supercross KTM Junior Supercross Challenge Arlington, TX February 20, 2016 Photos: Simon Cudby Words: Brapp Mag The KJSC is an intermission program where 15 randomly selected riders race aboard identically prepared KTM 50 SXS motorcycles. Throughout the day, the young riders will experience a track walk like the pros, participate in two practice sessions, sign autographs for the fans, participate in opening ceremonies and race a three-lap exhibition race during the Supercross night program. To qualify riders must have previous race experience, be a straight A student and meet age, height and weight requirements.

In mid February eight year old motocross and hare scrambles racer Jaden Palmer from Hammonton, NJ would wow the crowd with not only his race win but his now famous Nae-Nae dance after taking the checkered flag in front of the starting gate. Jaden’s race didn’t make live TV but his dance certainly did and has since gone viral on the internet. In talking with Jaden a few days after the event he was still super fired up. He said the experience was amazing and he made some great friends while there. He also told me that he was so nervous before the race started and being in front of that huge crowd that he thought he was going to lose his lunch. Once the gate dropped however his racer instincts took over and Jaden did what he does best and that’s winning races.

I’ve watched this young man race at different events and venues now for the last four years and I believe he has a great future ahead of him. Jaden said they will be concentrating on motocross this year but he still loves the hare scrambles racing for cross training. You can watch for him at most of the LL qualifiers as they are pursuing the larger amateur title events this year. This is his last year racing the 50cc bike and he will also be racing in the 65cc divisions this year as well. His win in Texas also qualifies him for the Monster Energy Cup where he will take on other KJSC winners. B

MAMA News for 2016 Middle Atlantic Motocross Association
www.mamamx.com 1. The gate fee’s: Gate fee’s will work as follows. $15.00 if you come in Friday or Saturday. If you leave the track Saturday night within 2 hours of the final moto, you will turn in your wristband at the gate and receive $5 back. Sunday will be a $10 admission. 2. Membership: The membership application will be easier in 2016. The membership will be a flat rate of $40. No longer will you have to pay the additional $5 per class for membership. This will also help when figuring year end standings if you began the year in one class and switched to another. We will still offer the non-racer membership for $10 again this year. 3. A Class Payout: MAMA will guarantee a minimum of $2500 for the A Class payouts this year. This will be split among the Open, 250 and 125 classes. 4. Adding the new AMA 125cc Class: MAMA will be adding the 125cc class for A, B, and C riders. This will be a 12+ for the B and C class and 16+ for the A class. To help make room for the 125cc class, we will be cutting the Unlimited class on Sunday. 5. 50cc Classes: MAMA will be restructuring the 50cc classes! The new format will be as follows; Saturday will run a 50cc PW class and a 50cc open class. Sunday will run the classes closer to the AMA and MX Sports setup. We will run a stock limited class. We will run a 50cc 4-6 split gate with 50cc 7-8 class. We will run our 50 A split with 50 B. 6. Senior classes: There will be a slight modification to the senior classes. MAMA will run the Senior Open and Novice and Super Senior Open and Novice classes next year. There will no longer be a support class for these 2 classes. This will help keep it fun for those who race for fun and help increase the competition for the competitive adult racers, If there is anyone interested in becoming a sponsor of MAMA this year, contact Rich Hutchins for more information. Advancemarine@aol.com or myself at MamaVP@yahoo.com. Stay tuned for more information and we look forward to an exciting year in 2016!

2016 ½ Cobra CX50 FWE
that prevents shock and damage to the internal parts. Unlike a plate clutch, this does not drag, is easy to push and easy to start.
Words By: Kenny Held Photos By: Alexis Plummer
The wait is over! After years of speculation regarding a new powerplant from Cobra, we now have it. No, it’s not the 85cc that all of us were waiting for, but what we do have is the new Venom engine. Our test bike, the pre-production prototype of the 2016 ½ Factory Works Edition was fitted with this new engine.
The bike we received had just come from a private MX track in the mid-west near the Cobra Facility in Michigan. There it was test ridden by none other than Loretta Lynne’s champion Casey Cochran. The bike gave very impressive results. This new engine has massive amounts of torque. This allowed the motocross riders to accelerate up the face of jumps, and quickly accelerate out of turns. Their testers were able to clear doubles that their 65s had trouble clearing. On tighter supercross tracks, the KTM SXSs would usually out corner the Cobras because of their power curves. But not with the Venom engine. This engine hits harder, and pulls longer than ever. Our testing however, would not involve Motocross. Cobra’s testing was all done on the motocross track and it was time to test its reliability. Cobra’s chief engineer, Phil McDowell said “If anyone can break this thing, it’s those harescramble guys. Send it to John!” John Castaldi is Cobra’s “Off-Road EliteTeam” Manager and owner of Fun Factory Racing in New Jersey.
I can tell you that when they state Works Edition, it’s not just words. At first glance the bike looks similar to the King Cobra as far as seat height, ergos and plastics. One of the most significant changes to the chassis was additional rake angle to keep the bike stable under acceleration and high-speed straights. We also found lighter wheels, and some updates to the suspension. Further observation of the power supply revealed something completely different. Utilizing what appears similar to their CX65, the new cylinder uses base studs instead of the long cylinder studs. This makes maintenance a lot easier. Cylinders are cast using individually 3D printed molds that are broken apart after the castings are poured. Traditionally cast cylinders have to be made in such a way that the solid mold be removed after it cools, severely limiting the shape of the ports. This is the first 50cc bike to utilize a triple exhaust port design. The lower end of the engine is reconfigured with new cases, and a raised crankcase. The cases are thinner and lighter than ever. The clutch and driveline still utilize the 5th generation 3-shoe clutch with the additional “Slipper” WICOMICO

Our woods testing was conducted in a top secret location deep in the South Jersey pines. Our testers for the day were Logan Ritz, Keith Tepper, Tyler Plummer and 2015 AMA East Champion 50cc Kenneth “Kenito” Held. For comparison, each rider brought their own bike that they are comfortable with. Also on hand was a 2016 Cobra CX65 Off Road Edition. Each Test rider was asked to ride their own Cobra 50s for 2 laps on our 1.5 mile South Jersey Single Track sand and was timed. Upon completion they were sent out on the FWE. Once again lap times were recorded and comparisons were made. The newer unit power delivery was so abrupt and so much faster that our test riders were caught completely off guard. The only test rider who was able to ride the bike to its potential was Kenito, but he had to work much harder. Even he drew a slower lap time on the newer unit. After scratching our heads John came over and asked “So kids, how was it”? The kids were silent. They could not believe the power coming out of the 2016 1/2 CX 50 FWE. What was more puzzling was that the gearing on this bike was even taller than the 15 units but the hit was so off the hook. None of the test riders were able to keep the front end on the ground, or keep it pointed in the right direction.

Since Cobra has made the commitment of an increased off-road presence, part of the test was to determine the best tune for the woods. Also, off-road bikes have to run much longer at a time than during an MX race. It’s not uncommon to have ‘wheels turning’ for 90 minutes. and clutch need to be considered. “We beat the snot out of this thing, and it never even hiccuped.” said Castaldi. We knew by watching the riders that the bike had to be a little softer to be controllable. The first modification was taller gearing. While that helped, it caused a lot of heat in the clutch. We had several pre-configured clutches sent from Cobra. Once we found the one that worked, it was like night and day. The kids now had a bike they could maneuver in the woods. Within minutes the lap times were reduced by 10’s of seconds. Now we had problem #2, the test riders did not want to stop riding it. We had to make human barricades to get them to stop. It was obvious at this point that the domination that this bike has on the MX track, it now has in the woods. One thing surprised everyone: The current King Cobra is looking for fuel at about an hour and fifteen minutes. This bike lasted over 2 hours. Our speculation is that this motor is so powerful, that the riders don’t need to hold it wide open. The overall package of the 2016 ½ Cobra Factory Works Edition is very nice, and it is loaded with many features that come standard. It comes with black anodized parts, a ribbed traction seat, a full set of personalized graphics, billet chain guide, and Pro Taper Micro bars. With a list price of $4898, it is a true factory race bike. Also on hand was the 2016 Cobra CX65 Off-Road Edition. This bike is also a blast to ride. The 65 powerplant is the only 65 with a direct-acting, electronic powervalve. This valve is digitally controlled for precise operation. With a new buttery-smooth clutch, the 3 way adjustable suspension, and it’s bulletproof design, the Off-Road Edition adds Unabiker radiator guards, a skid plate, a brake shark-fin, and other enhancements geared for the GNCC, Harescrambler, or woods racer. It was pretty obvious to us that in the next few years, we are going to be seeing a lot more yellow bikes on the podium. RIDER IMPRESSIONS:
Kenito Held Age: 9 - 75lbs: The bike has a lot of low end power and it just does not want to stop making power. On his 1st test ride (pre gearing change) he wished he was at the Motocross track. After the changes, he wished he could race the FWE 50 in 2016. Unfortunately he has aged out of the class. When asked to compare the FWE to another bike, he compared it to his 2016 CX65 somewhere between 2nd and 3rd gear. Coincidently he was 5 seconds faster on the FWE compared to him riding the same loop under the same conditions on his 2016 CX65. Keith Tepper Age 8: - 65lbs: the smallest and youngest of the group, Keith was riding the bike like he stole it. He adapted the quickest to the bike and was on. He loved the newly designed bars and how they felt around his hands (Pro Taper Micro Bars). He loved the power off the start and out of the corners.
Tyler Plummer Age: 8 - 85lbs: The Cobra 50 FWE has a lot of power. When going down the straightaways it hooks up from the start. The bike handled great in the woods. It turned quickly with great throttle response. The power in the straightaways it seemed endless. The suspension handled the rougher sections great. Overall, it was great fun bike to ride. He too wanted to race the bike in 2016 but unfortunately Tyler is a bit too tall for the bike and will no way be able to finish out the season due to his growth spurts. Tyler was the tallest and heaviest of the test riders and we would recommend a tall bar kit for the bike for taller riders. Logan Ritz Age: 8 80lbs: Logan said there was no comparison to the 2015 model he currently races. “This is like cheating”. His dad is currently in negotiations with Fun Factory to have a Factory Off-Road FWE made for Logan.
2016.5 Cobra CX50 FWE Highlights • More power, more torque, less weight, smaller package… better from every angle. • ‘No-compromise’ torque curve – Massive amounts of lowend torque for launching off the gate and out of corners, AND classic Cobra over-rev that provides that ‘2nd gear’ for wide open situations. • New off-plane tuned expansion chamber. Packages tight, features D-shaped header for minimal flow losses. • Next generation 5Gx Freewheeling Clutch. Precision engagement, durable, freewheels for increased corner speed and easier starting. • Cobra Friction Drive increases driveline durability and improves traction over rough terrain. • Improved maintainability. Easier to do just about everything (top ends, drain coolant, check CFD, etc) B

Barrett Keiffer wins four 50cc divisions Late February took us once again to one of the largest motorsports shows in the country. Lucky for all of us it’s right in our own back yard. What began as the Harrisburg Indoor Motorcycle Races back in the late 1970’s has evolved into what we all know as Motorama today. I mean where else can you go for twice the price of a two hour movie and indulge in so many motorhead activities? From our favorite, arenacross racing, to fantastic deals on motocross gear and other goodies like seeing the largest RC car event in the country, or Robot Conflict, go cart and quarter midget racing, car and bike shows, beauty pageants, lots of food and games for the kids. I’m telling you, this is a deal. Did I mention arenacross racing by chance? Let me tell you, if you weren’t there you missed some of the best pre-season racing you could have ever seen. I say pre-season because this event is kind of

like the kick off for the outdoor racing season here in Pennsylvania and the surrounding regions. I know racers here represented at least five local series and riders travel here from all over the eastern seaboard to compete. Let’s start with the expert divisions. It was almost like a pro supercross race because the gates were stacked and there were lots of racers here who had the potential to win it. In the end however it would be young gun Justin Cooper from Long Island, NY and the Motorama veteran Steve Roman from western Pa that would fight it out for the top honors. The two would swap lap wins in the Dash for Cash on both days but it would be Cooper who turned it up a notch to win both days of 250 A racing. Roman would go on to win the plus 25 divisions and both Open A events with both racers notching 4 wins each on the weekend. Watch for our upcoming video coverage on our website for some of that action. In the amateur divisions in would be NJ racer Cory Carsten and MD native Arianna Miranda may be the first girl to ever Cameron Dowell fighting beat the boys here it out and swapping wins. Both of these young racers have tremendous potential and should be watched in the years to come. Four wheel expert racing saw Kentucky rider Casey Martin making a return to Motorama. Martin has pretty much owned that division for the last few years being one of the top pros on the circuit. In mini quad racing both Tommy Luffey and Justice Schmeider won both days of racing in their divisions and on Sunday Arianna Miranda would be the girl who beat the boys in the 90cc division. Word at the event unofficially had Arianna as the first women to accomplish that feat at Motorama however I’m sure she won’t be the last. Women’s racing continues to grow and there are quite a few gals out there that get the job done. Back to two wheels and the mini ranks we saw several racers winning multiple classes. Our man on this month’s cover, Cole Bader raced to

ARCTIC CAT NITRO ARENACROSS TOUR February 5-6, 2016 – St. Charles, MO
Story By: Dave Pott - Photos By: Matt Burgher
CLICK HERE FOR MORE nicely. After restarting the race, minus one, Bryan Jackson took first in the Plus 30 Class and Josh Whitener took first in the Plus 25 Class.
QUICK RECAP In other news, rounds 15 and 16 of the Arctic Cat Nitro Arenacross Tour took place in St. Charles, Missouri. Located just outside of St. Louis, the Family Arena was packed for the adrenaline filled event. Riders from the age of four to 40+ took to the track to compete.
WHISKEY THROTTLE Some say, “It’s in our blood.” Others love the competition, and still others ride, because it’s a feeling that few can enjoy. But no rider wants to be involved in a crash, much less one where an ambulance and surgery is needed. This week we had a chance to catch up with a few of the riders in the Arctic Cat Nitro Arenacross Tour, just days after being involved in a horrific crash in St. Charles, Missouri. On Saturday, February 6th, a rider lost control of his bike causing him to clip, run over, and crush bikes, riders and cameras. Best told from the eyes of those involved, I had a chance to interview these riders after the accident. Josh Whitener from Imperial, Missouri, tells us about his view of the Plus 25/Plus 30 Class, and how he factored in the crash. “I got a good start and rounded the first turn in 3rd. I went inside after the whoops and a green Kawasaki whiskey throttled behind me. It clipped my left hand and totally took out the other rider in front of me. I believe he had to have surgery on his hand, and broke five bones. My best wishes go out to Randy Hug who was severely injured. After the red flag I looked at my hand and it was swollen and blue and bruised, but I was able to start the restart and I finished 2nd overall to Bryan Jackson and 1st in my class. I’ve watched the crash over 50 times from my GoPro and the Checked Out Photography page and I’m still amazed how lucky I was!” That green Kawasaki was Kameron Riddle. “Well, the beginning of the race going into the whoop section I was in 6th place, and gaining on fourth and fifth. As I started passing in between them, the gap closed causing us to bang bars. The rider on my right side fell over on my arm causing me to whiskey throttle. After that, it all happened so fast, and I was unable to catch it. The feeling after it shot me through the air was breath taking, and frightening! The feeling of not being able to do anything, but letting it throw me was the worst! Luckily I came out of it with nothing but a cut underneath my eye! As for the other riders that were in the accident, I wish they got to be as fortunate as me, but also glad it wasn’t worse than what it already was! Very blessed to make it through a crash as bad as that one.” Randy Hug, took the brunt of the crash losing a finger in the process. “At first, I didn’t know what happened. The track paramedics were trying to get me to go on an ambulance ride. I told my son Jordan to get our equipment loaded and let’s go home. He said “Dad, I think you need to take this serious this time.” That’s all I remember before I got out of surgery. Then they showed me the video and pictures of some of the damage. I had 4-5 broken bones in my hand, a finger almost completely cut off, a broken collar bone and a concussion. My thoughts are, I am glad Bryan Jackson came to me and said a prayer. I am thankful for my wife’s support and my MX family.” The luckiest member of the group would be Pastor Brian Jackson. Some might say he had a higher power watching over him. “I didn’t see or hear it coming. Looking at the video shows it was a very close call for me and I am very fortunate. It’s arenacross. Racers are on rockets in small and confined areas fighting to be on top. Inevitably things are going to happen and sometimes those things are accidents, and sometimes they are the result of too much aggression. This specific incident was clearly an accident that happened from one racer falling into another one that created the term “whiskey throttle”, which is an uncontrollable wide-open acceleration moment with the motorcycle. It only takes a split second! I am happy to report that all involved are recovering and doing well.” The video can be seen on Checked Out Action Photography’s Facebook Page or on YouTube at Checked Out Action Media. As bad as the wreck was, it could have been worse. Checked Out Action lost a camera and have a couple of bruised cameramen. As for the riders, there was only one serious injury, and he is recovering

Mud Freak Report By: Mike “Mud Freak” Petrone
What’s Up Off-Road Freaks! Charity Ride 2016 hosted by Sullivan County ATV Association; a non-profit organization. They stepped it up this year with 400 riders and raised $15,000! Epic!! It’s going to help so many families and organizations for special needs children. There were many volunteers involved in making this ride a success. Thank you to those people taking time to assist in various tasks. One being to tow broken down machines back to their trucks; like mine with a broken tie rod! Also we appreciate the landowners for letting us crazy off road freaks use their property as our playground. What a perfect day for this event! The weather was great; just warm enough to help melt the majority of the snow and ice. From the traffic of the ATVs and SXS made the ground like a slip and slide of mud. Just the way I liked it... Lol! On this event the trails were changed around from the normal set up and some new trails were added! It’s about a 30 mile ride with easy to technical trails. There is a lot of good spots where the riders could hang out; such as the big field where you could really let ‘er rip and the rocky section was a lot of fun too. There are lots of cool trails to offer to all different types of riders. That day it was going great until my tie rod end broke; kinda ruined my day. After the shenanigans I had experienced, I worked up an appetite! We headed over to Mr Willy’s where they have a fixed menu which makes it simple and easy. The food and service was great! Great atmosphere and a big thanks to Mr. Willy’s and the staff! It’s well worth it to attend this event. Until next time...
Stay Muddy!
New Pa ATV Trail System
Commissioner Jeff Snyder wants people to come into the area, spend their monies at local businesses, campgrounds, utilize the state parks and other recreations while here – in the end boost the economy, bring tourism here.
In a year’s time, momentum hasn’t stop in creating a large scale ATV trail in Northcentral Pennsylvania.
“This is going to benefit our area, our taxpayers and our businesses,” Snyder said.
By: Jessica Welshans
The project is called Northcentral Pennsylvania ATV Initiative project, those involved know it isn’t going to happen in an instant, some hurdles have to be cleared and there have been many obstacles along the way. Organizations spearheading the effort are coming straight out of Clinton County. The Central Mountains ATV Association, along with the Clinton County Commissioners, Clinton County Economic Partnership and Tourism and other agencies like Snow Shoe Rails to Trails and PAOHV Pennsylvania Off-Highway Vehicle Association have all been working diligently to get this trail complete.
“It will grow ATV business, enhance tourism and enhance economic growth here in Clinton County and the region,” Rich Wykoff, club member and tourism chairmen said. Challenges have been in many forms, ranging from getting townships to change ordinances for roads to be open to ATV travel and working with the state agencies like the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to include ATVs as vehicles that can use state forest roads and trails that are currently designated dual purpose as is the case with snowmobiles and dual sports. The commissioners and committee members for the initiative feel the biggest obstacle has been the perception of the ATVer as a whole.
Since the start the trail has grown from its initial report of 800 miles to 1,100.
Commissioners Snyder and Pete Smeltz said they have had residents of the county approach them being very against the trail proposal.
Henry Sorgen, CMATV club president reports that 44 percent of the trail has been completed. In the 18 months working the miles have increased because more township roads have opened up to ATVs, thus increasing this mileage.
“I have run into people during the elections and said we don’t want this because ATVers are bad, they don’t obey the rules and don’t stay on trails,” Snyder said at a sit down discussing the trail.
The main drive behind this trail system is to bring economic development not only to Clinton County, but the entire region it is located in.
He wants people out there to understand, that isn’t all together true...
