Captains Quarters IMPORTANT NEWS - PLEASE READ

In This Issue:

Hey all - welcome to the first ever fully digital issue of Brapp Magazine and of course the 2017 racing season, both exciting in their own right so let’s get to it. Yes it was a huge step and one that scared the crap out of me (because I’m an old guy). But the bottom line is, that’s the way it’s being done these days and although there are those of us who don’t like it, the fact is that sometimes realities just change. The high cost of print and distribution along with the majority of our reader’s habits forced the change. It was either go digital or go away and of course that really made the decision easy. So there you have it - BrappMag.com is the new way and the only way so we hope that you all embrace it, download our phone app and follow along. Please search ‘BrappMag’ on your phones app store and you’ll have us with you wherever you go. Next up is the 2017 racing season, oh baby. We just came out of an exciting weekend at Motorama where the racing was awesome as usual and we are head long into both the motocross and off road racing seasons. Motocross kicks off at Doublin Gap the first weekend in March followed by enduro racing with the ECEA on March 18th. Please check the issue from here on out for upcoming events and schedules and places you can ride. In this issue find that Motorama coverage I was talking about. Justin Cooper has become the man to beat there in the expert bike divisions and local pro John Natalie made his long awaited return to Motorama to dominate the A quad division. Please also welcome the off road racers from the Western NY Series. We list some of their champions and will be featuring some of their racing this coming season. Check out news from PVR and the CMATVA along with registration information for this year’s Motocross for Christ camps being held at Pagoda MC. We also have our regular where to ride and upcoming event sections and so much more. We also ask for your help - we need everyone to download our app but more importantly to click in and read our digital issues online. While you’re there click on the hot links to visit our advertisers pages and please do business with them whenever you can. Yes you might be able to save a few bucks now and then when buying elsewhere, but I’ll ask are they the businesses that support the local tracks? If they are then great but if not please make your buying choices wisely. We thank you for reading and we hope you are looking forward to 2017 as much as we are. So here’s to the future and we thank you for your support. Jim Bull and Family BrappMag.com

AHRMA Mid Atlantic Vintage Racing

Email: partsrus2014@yahoo.com

By: Dave Kutskel Spring CC Season By now I hope you all are busy finishing up your winter projects and rebuilds and are planning to attend our 2017 regional Cross Country series. 2016 saw another record turnout in both participants and entries, that makes for 8+ years in a row of positive growth. It takes a small army to keep things going and we are blessed with many outstanding volunteers that make major sacrifices so that others can enjoy a day of racing. Once again, we are offering a 10 round series spread out from April through October. Although most events are located at established favorites, we do have a new venue at LL Raceway near New Bethlehem PA that we are very excited about. Hey you eastern Ohio riders, this one’s not too far for you! Our season kicks off April 9th at Rocket Raceway near Three Springs PA. For those who haven’t been there before, it has incredible terrain with a bunch of elevation changes. The course has a mix of quad trail, fire road and single track that flows over the mountain ridges on a five mile loop. Drainage there is absolutely amazing, so no worries about rain. Free overnight camping is available and our favorite food vender will be on site serving up hot chow.

Glen Hershey Story

Two weeks later we team up with the AHRMA Northeast crew for our joint regional at Irish Valley MX Park. Dan and his team always make a fun and challenging course and the competition is always great. Two weeks after that, on May 7th, we return to Reynlow Park near Reynoldsville PA for another go at some of the best trails in the region.

39th Annual Motorama Events Comes to a Close Harrisburg, PA (2/21/17) - Temperatures in the sixties brought racing and car fanatics out in droves to witness the 39th Annual Motorama Events at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. Arenacross, Quarter Midget and Go-Kart racing kept race fans entertained while R/C (Remote Control) and Robot Conflict provided an element of technical precision. Car enthusiasts were treated to nearly 700 custom cars, trucks, cycles, performance vehicles and racing vehicles in the Rod, Custom & Tuner Show and Speed Show.

Local Pro John Natalie shows he still knows his way around a Motorama track.

The fans and drivers in attendance also gave generously to the 2017 Motorama Events official charity, The Children’s Miracle Network at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. The organization benefitted from a Chinese auction and 50/50 raffle tickets.

Expert Arenacross Riders Take Multiple Wins A revamped track got the seal of approval by several Arenacross riders in victory lane, at Motorama 2017. One such rider was pro 4-wheeler, John Natalie, who made his comeback to Motorama after a lengthy hiatus. “I love it here! In fact, I wish it was strung out over more days,” Natalie said. “Maybe a four-day event. That would be awesome.” When asked if Natalie is involved in any other types of racing, he replied, “all other racing, as long as I have the time. I think the circle tracks are awesome racing.” With so many young, new names taking over the sport, Natalie explained his secret for success. “Cardio. Weight lifting. I work out a lot more than I used to,” Natalie explained, “but I have always worked out.” The exercising is clearly working for Natalie, as he picked up wins for both Saturday and Sunday’s A-Mains, in the Open A 4-Wheel division. Saturday’s finish saw Joshua Deemer and Daniel Fehr complete the top three and in Sunday’s final, Fehr improved one position to finish second followed by Brian Ace in third.

This show has been going down for years and is the largest motorcycle show in the Mid-Atlantic Region of our country. We were blessed with a beautiful spring like day on the Saturday we attended and the bikers were out in numbers at maybe one of their first rides for the new season. Inside we found bikes and off road stuff from all the major manufacturers. Dealers were in attendance offering great deals on all their wares along with aftermarket suppliers for both hard parts and apparel. There was also a bike show offering many categories with over $20,000 up for grabs along with lots of entertainment on the main stage. Some weekend events included a strong man competition, line dancing lessons, a tattoo contest, the Daisy Dukes and Biker Boots beauty pageant and cutest biker baby. The riders were there, the bikes were there and some really cool iron was there too. This show is an annual event so if it’s not already you may want to get it on your schedule for next year. NOHVCC January 2017 Newsletter Article: Northcentral PA Trail Initiative Halsey / January 23, 2017 Photos: Henry Sorgen

Pennsylvania ATV Initiative Moving Toward 1,200 Mile Trail System There are over 1,300 ATVs registered in Clinton County, Pennsylvania. But when the owners of those ATVs start planning their trail-riding vacations, many head for West Virginia or New Hampshire. Both States have extensive ATV trail systems connected to small towns with all kinds of rider services and family attractions. The Central Mountains ATV Association (CMATVA) is working hard to change that scenario. Located in Lock Haven, the CMATVA is partnering with State and local governments, tourism bureaus and other trail organizations to create a 1,200 mile ATV trail system, connecting towns in 8 counties to four existing ATV trail systems on pubic lands. It’s called the Northcentral PA ATV Initiative project. Leading the effort is Henry Sorgen, CMATVA President. “The Hatfield-McCoy Trail in West Virginia is bringing in a lot of busianess,” said Sorgen. “We saw in their 2014 economic impact study that riders from Pennsylvania were a major contributor. We found that was also true in New Hampshire. “Our trail proposal is located within the largest tract of public land in Pennsylvania. That’s the attraction. We have what exists in West Virginia and New Hampshire...and then some. Riders love our terrain. And we already have some of the best public ATV trail systems. The goal is to connect them together, and to the local municipalities, using primarily township roads.”

“We wanted to include as many stakeholders as possible,” said Rich Wykoff, Committee Chair. We made that a priority from the outset. Our state representatives were able to make contacts with the Pennsylvania DCNR and other agencies. The businesses were able to tell us how the trail would impact them, and give us suggestions that worked best for them. The chambers, and the Economic Partnership Tourism Board gave us their perspective. The SSRT has done a lot of work. And the Pennsylvania OHV Association (PaOHVA) has provided support and they have a lobbyist.” Recent winters have produced very little snow for snowmobiling, hurting some businesses to the point of almost shutting their doors. Sorgen says businesses throughout the 8 county area are excited about the ATV trail proposal. Those along trail sections already open to riders are reporting increased business brought to their stores by ATV riders. Sorgen lists them in the powerpoint presentation. They include many businesses that offer services to riders, including campgrounds, hotels, convenience stores, and restaurants. Based on an ATV Recreational Analysis, Clinton County estimates that ATV riders currently spend, on average, $210 per visit while in Clinton County for ATV recreation. If connector trails are built between a local community and an existing trail system, survey responses suggest that the average ATV rider will increase the number of visits to Clinton County from 7 to 12 per year, and total expenditures would rise from $1400 to $2500 per rider. The ATV Initiative is also part of “Pennsylvania Wilds,” a state-sponsored program designed to help revitalize rural communities through sustainable tourism development, while inspiring a stewardship ethic in residents and visitors.

Among the State Trails is the Bloody Skillet ATV Trail in the Sproul State Forest, located in Center and Clinton Counties. The 38-mile system is managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), with assistance on work days by the CMATVA. Once completed, the Northcentral trail system would include Clinton, Centre, Potter, Clearfield, Elk, Jefferson, Cameron counties and a small portion of Lycoming County.

CMATVA and SSRT have agreed to provide and install signage for municipalities that open their roads to ATVs. Last August, a CMATVA work crew installed 200 signs on township roads in municipalities opened to ATVs last summer. For townships that request them, signs are also available that tell riders that riding ATVs on their roads is not a right, but a privilege.

The trail initiative has reached nearly half its goal In less than 3 years, the Northcentral PA ATV Initiative has made incredible progress. A recent report to its 25-member Trail Commission says that the trail system now includes 594 miles of legal, signed trails and connecting routes, about 47% of its ultimate goal.

The CMATVA has obtained funding for the trail initiative through State and County grants, as well as the Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative. It also has a fund-raising campaign using GoFundMe.com. Over the past 3 years, the Association’s efforts have also helped change the image of ATV riders among the non-riding public. It stresses that its organization is family oriented, and works hard to promote safe, responsible riding.

The CMATVA and Sorgen’s efforts are clearly focused on not just building trails, but connecting communities. As shown in the project’s logo design, the trail initiative is a triangle of partnerships: community, business and governments in Northcentral Pennsylvania. The accompanying descriptor is equally compelling: “Making sustainable connections and supporting local economies.” As stated on page one of a recent powerpoint presentation updating the trail’s progress, its guiding mission is to “Identify a system that enhances support for tourism and local businesses, that competes with the multi-billion dollar ATV business in neighboring states.” The CMATVA’s key partners on the project are the Clinton County Commissioners, the Clinton County Economic Partnership Tourism Board, and Snow Shoe Rails to Trails (SSRT), which manages 39 miles of existing trails on an abandoned railroad bed and OHV-legal roads. State Representatives and Senators, as well as many business owners, also serve on the Trail Commission.

CMATVA continues to attend meetings promoting the initiative. There are 59 townships involved in the project, which must create ordinances to allow ATVs on their roads. And there are hurdles to come, at the state level. “The biggest hurdle that’s ahead of us now, are the little state “jumper roads” we need to connect the township roads,” said Sorgen. “We have small gaps from a 16th of a mile to a mile of state roads, with high traffic volumes, where ATVs are currently not allowed. The other hurdle we have is getting legislation passed to release private land owners of liability for recreational use. That’s crucial to getting more townships to sign on.” B

The Anthracite Trail Riders, a club dedicated to promoting the AOAA, hosted the Lock Haven area, Central Mountain ATV Association, Inc., on a ride through the park. Twenty-nine machines and approximately 40 members participated in the 45 mile ride that spanned the Western and Eastern Reserves with several stops along the way for sight-seeing, lunch and getting to know other members of each club. Focus on Flexibility

By Coach Nick Lavella, Owner of Physical Industry Training, NASM CPT, FNS, Suspension Trainer, US Army Vet, and Avid Motocross Racer/ Enthusiast For those of you who are reading this edition of Brapp Magazine, you probably engage in some form of riding or motorsport hobbies. So you’re an active individual on a machine and that means you’re constantly moving in awkward positions, straining muscle groups, as well as controlling and handling moving weight over terrain that is anything but smooth. If you’re a motocross racer, enduro racer, or free-rider, you want to have optimum control over your bike and limit injury, and this can be gained by practicing correct flexibility routines.

BENEFITS OF CORRECT STRETCHING: Correcting muscle imbalances, increasing range of motion, decreasing excessive tension on muscles, relieving joint stress, improving the extensibility of muscles and tendons, maintaining the normal function length of all muscles, improving neuromuscular efficiency, improving function. Riders in general experience what we call in the fitness industry as pattern overload. Pattern overload is the process of repeating a consistent movement pattern that places abnormal stress on the body. Increased tissue tension has shown to be a prelude to muscle spasms, tissue adhesions, altered neuromuscular control, and then injury.

TYPES OF STRETCHING CORRECTIVE FLEXIBILITY OR STATIC STRETCHING: Can be completed after exercise or moto is completed. This form of stretching is designed to increase joint range of motion, improve muscle imbalances and correct altered joint motions. This is accomplished when the muscle is at it’s most extended point and held at that position for 30-60 seconds.

ACTIVE FLEXIBILITY: This form uses the active-isolate technique which is designed to improve the extensibility of soft tissue, and increase neuromuscular efficiency by completing 4-5 repetitions of a 3-4 sec hold on each muscle group. Can be done before and after exercise. FUNCTIONAL FLEXIBILITY: This form of stretching can be done before exercise and/or a moto. This is considered a dynamic stretching technique and will influence the nervous system to move efficiently throughout the entire range of motion. Examples of this would be 30-60 sec of each: arm circles, lunges, body weight squats, leg swings, and high knees. For myself and the riders on my program, we will complete these movements will in staging or right before gate drop to “spark” the system and be ready for the intensity of the race.

CONCLUSION Practicing regular flexibility routines will help you stay away from unwanted discomfort, injury, early on-set of fatigue during races, and every day stress. It will however increase the quality of your life. The stretches can be completed anywhere from 5-30 min.
