Captains Quarters Welcome back everybody and I would like to wish you all a Happy Memorial Day. I know that’s a few weeks off but it’s a very important holiday in my eyes. To many of us we see it as an extra day off work, a day to hang out with the family and grill out or maybe an extra day at the track. It also marks the official beginning of most summer activities. The official meaning however and one that probably gets more lost as time goes by is the official holiday that it represents. Here is what I got from Goggle: Memorial Day, an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. So I would ask you on this Memorial Day, especially because we have so many forgotten troops out there fighting and dying for our freedoms that we take for granted every day. I ask that you remember and thank them all in your own special way on that day. That you thank and remember them every day that you swing a leg over your machine and go tear up the dirt of this great country we call America. Even as bad as some things seem some days, we are still here reading about the freedoms that we all enjoy, partaking in our favorite activities and eating that all American hotdog on that day we call Memorial Day because of them. Now to the welcome back part, I find it just amazing that we are 10 issues into our re brand of Brapp Magazine. That can only mean that all of you are amazing and supporting what we do. It takes a lot of time and hard work to pull this off and more importantly a little bit of cash. So to our advertisers, our readers, those of you that purchase photos and videos, those that share our stuff, those that keep hitting on our social media and viewing our edits, we thank you. Without all that - this couldn’t exist. It takes a full time effort to pull it off, so this is our full time jobs. We respect you all for understanding that and for keeping us doing what we do. After all the main goal is to give back, just like that Memorial Day thing I spoke about above. Those that serve will receive, so I thank you again. Other than that all the usual, thank you for supporting our advertisers, thank you for logging onto our websites and thank you for reading Brapp Magazine. We hope you enjoy the issue. B

MDRA Round #1 - Budds Creek April 2-3, 2016

Stephen Stella (677) comes out to win Vet A

By: Brapp Mag Staff

Michael Giovanniello wins College Boy plus 250 and Open A. If you were there, you already know the story. The weekend started with a little rain on Saturday morning but the track turned out great for the practice day on Saturday and then the North Pole moved in. Overnight the temps dropped and the winds came and by race day on Sunday the sun was high in the sky but the day was frigid and very windy and the MDRA loyals stayed and braved it out for a great but very cold day of racing. After a few rounds of practice the 40 plus division took the first gate drop of the MDRA season with John Bowlin going 1-1 for the overall win. Next up the 250 A guys took to the track with Pro racer Michael Giovanniello on the scene to get some seat time in at Budds before the AMA Nationals kick off. Giovanniello would grab the wins in 250 and Open A as well as Collegeboy. Let’s all cheer on the NJ native as he chases his dreams at the pro level.

Jackson Beck races to the 50cc Shaft win The day continued on with great battles in the 85cc and supermini divisions. I’ve watched most of this group compete against each other since they were on 50’s and I tell you that its great racing now but you wait to this group gets to the expert ranks. It’s going to be red hot and well, let’s just say a little prayer for the competition now. And please don’t forget our current crop of 50cc racers. These kids put on a great show and many will go on to future amateur championships and will accomplish many things in life. Please check out a few images and top five finishers here then log on to our website at: www.brappmag.com to see more pictures, video and complete results from the event. B

Without you all, we would not be doing what we all love to do, and that is to ride. B

The Ecea Enduro season is again in full swing with two enduros that where back to back; Sandy Lane and Pine Barons Clock Run. Both events offered riders some nice trails, some really tight, and some sections being really fast. In both events, riders had to deal with the frigid cold weather, but of course once they were on the move they warmed up in no time. Pine Barons was a great enduro for those just starting to do enduros, and was a low point taker. Sandy Lane was a bit faster in the trails and in their start

Schaeffers Motorsports 2nd Anniversary Celebration June 25th - 9am to 4pm

Orwigsburg, Pa

Last month I took some time and traveled to meet our friends that own and operate Schaeffers Motorsports and Schaeffers Harley Davidson, both in Orwigsburg, Pa. I got to spend some time with the staff and meet one of the original founders of the business, Dennis Schaeffer. Dennis along with his father Carl (pap) and his mom Fern (nana) opened for business way back in 1967. The Schaeffers were motorcycle enthusiasts and they loved to ride so they thought it would be a great idea to have their own dealership. At the time both Dennis and his dad held full time jobs at Dana Corporation with one working first shift and the other second. They would split time at the dealership

12 BRAPP MAGAZINE May 2016

with nana running the shop while they were at work but by the early 1970’s both were at the shop full time. Dennis told me that first year they sold about five sportsters and just as many touring bikes. One of their biggest products however was a small scooter like machine that was owned by Harley but produced in Italy. I believe the brand was Aromachy but I’m not positive on the spelling of that. They would take these machines and convert them for dirt use to ride on the mountain trails around the shop and their customers loved them. Over the years the H-D dealership grew as well as their reputation. They continued to become more involved in the sport while adding on to their dealership to better support their customer’s needs. They would arrange rides to the large flat track races around the area, support the MDA and of course support

the motorcycling community in any way they could including sponsoring racers in all disciplines of the sport. A few years ago the Schaeffers were looking to expand yet once again. Their space at the original location was getting tight and their hopes were to open a motorcycle museum to showcase all the beautiful machinery they had acquired over the years. About the same time they realized that KTM was looking to open a new dealer in their area so they acquired a vacant car dealership location just a few miles from their original shop. When I asked Dennis what made him get into the off road business after operating an H-D Dealership all these years his reply was simple. He said, “we’ve ridden these hills and offroad trails forever around here and we are accustomed to offering premium brand motorcycles to our customers, so the decision was simple.” So two years ago in June Schaeffers Motorsports opened their doors offering KTM motorcycles. A few short months later they realized that another premium brand - BRP or Can Am as we know them was looking to expand to their area. The product fit so Can Am ATV’s, side by sides and the Syder Roadsters were added to the mix. Fast forward to today and Schaeffers Motorsports is getting ready to host their second anniversary celebration. They have grown quickly because they continue to offer that family style service that started almost 50 years ago. Yes both Dennis and nana continue to work full time at the store and nana still drives herself, even at 90 years of age. Their staff is very knowledgeable and they are a product of their products. You can find many of them out on the weekends either promoting their store at an event or competing in different forms of motorcycle and ATV competition. The store is clean and well stocked and offers service for all brands of motorcycles and ATV’s. They offer demo rides to qualified buyers and also offer a motorcycle rider training facility right at their site. The staff lives to ride and to keep their customers doing the same. They would like to invite you all to come check them out at their 2nd Anniversary Celebration. They’ll be having refreshments and a band so come stay for the day and bring along a friend, whether they ride or not. Vendors will be on hand and there will be great deals throughout the whole store. They also would like to thank their current customers, their team of dedicated employees and the local community who continue to support them. They hope to see you there, I know I will be. B

By: Brapp Mag Staff

Tyler Baran soars to the Junior Mini 1 win

This has been the battle to watch. Jackson (801) grabs 3 wins at SF

As par for the course this time of year, the cold weather continued on for this round of racing. They say to count your blessings as we should on this particular weekend. Even though Saturday was bitterly cold we at least escaped the snow and rain that some other venues had to deal with on this weekend. Actually by Sunday the wind had died down some and it wasn’t a terribly cold day. The good news is the sun was out and the racers came.

MAMA VP Rich Hutchins takes the O/A 50 plus win Orion Gregory (91) wins 4 classes on the weekend

This was our first trip to South Fork and I had heard in the days prior that SF was a really cool track. After our weekend there I agree and recommend that everyone give it a try. It is mostly sand and the lap times are fast but the track was well maintained and the staff there was very accommodating. Saturday Women Support 1. Kate Mullett 2. Paige Grubbs 3. Emma Moulden 4. Search them on goggle for all the details. As for the two days of racing, the MAMA family was on fire with great competition in many classes. Again most laid low in between motos because of the cold weather but when it was time for the gate to drop, the racers were there and ready to rock. Please check out the top five results from each class here then head over to MamaMX. com to see the rest. There are a few images here in our pages as well but head over to our website at BrappMag.com where you can view, share or purchase close to 2000 images from the weekend and be sure to hit our video page to check out a couple of cool edits. We’re having fun following you guys around and we’ll see you all next at Happy Ramblers for the Historic Blue/Grey race. B

CHAPLAINS CORNER Hello racers and parents, This is Zachary A. Camp with Victory in JESUS ministry’s saying hello. Many of you have big dreams and some of you may have very small dreams. I have heard it said that the place with the most potential is a grave yard only because we often never really live life to our fullest potential. You see many of us take our potential and our dreams with us to our grave. You know in this life time there is only one way to get ahead and that is to serve others. So if your dreams include getting ahead or making more money than you can know God’s on your team because he is in the business of serving others also. He wants to help you serve well. God sent his son to this earth to serve not to be served. JESUS is the son of God almighty the King of all kings yet he came here to serve us, mankind. JESUS gave up his life so we could have life, he died so we could live life abundantly forever and he gave his blood so we could be forgiven forever. Jesus is alive today, he has finished the task and has provided the good news of salvation for each of you because he loves you. One day when I was young and racing a 125 I was the first rider out in front on a very muddy morning at Happy Ramblers. I jumped a single jump at full speed and I flew through the air and stuck like a rock in the deep mud and landed on my back, I was brown all over that day. Read John 3:16 Jesus wants you to jump into His love, all in, holding nothing back and he promises to catch you with his Love and to direct your path and help you live an abundant life. Jesus poured out grace for all of us,

Zachary A. Camp

Tri County Harescramble Rd # 1 ECEA Series

April 16-17, 2016

Rd # 2 AMA National Series By: Brapp Mag Staff

Fun Factory Cobra Off Road Race Team

Jaden wouldn’t be the only Palmer winning on this day either. Younger brother Landon who’s been hard at it got his first win ever today racing in the (4-6) 50cc Jr./LC division, looks like maybe he’s been studying his big brothers techniques.

Tri County Sportsmen were excellent hosts for the event

The youth division gave us a great race too with a big battle for first between Reece Bruner, Max Fernandez and Michael Beeler with Jeffrey Macknik throwing a wheel in now and then to keep them all honest. In the end it would be Beeler with the win and about a 20 second advantage.

It was a big weekend to kick off the 2016 ECEA Harescramble Series sponsored by MSR. Over 700 entries came out to race the loose sand at Port Elizabeth. The pits were slippery and the trails fast as the series debuted on a bright sunny weekend in Mid April.

Sunday brought over 500 entries to the National at Tri County. The Lafferty boys were at it again racing against some of the best riders the east coast has to offer. Ryder and Michael must have been locked wheel to wheel as not more than 3 seconds separated them at any point in the race. If you’ve never seen these two go through the woods you definitely owe it to your-

Brapp Mag was only in attendance on the youth day but what a blast we had. Young Jaden Palmer would take the overall wins in both the Pee Wee and Juniors division on this day. This kid is just on fire winning just about everywhere he goes.

Cold weather brings out the Hot vintage racers! AHRMA Mid Atlantic Vintage Cross Country Race Rocket Raceway in Three Springs PA By: Glenn Hershey

Round #1 of the 2016 series kicked off April 10, 2016. Early arrivals were greeted with clear but cold conditions and the site was lucky to miss the snow that fell in the northern counties. A fast and flowing dust-free five miles of singletrack trail, fields, old logging roads and paths included numerous hills up and down, a couple muddy water crossings and virtually rock-less racing! A very vintage-friendly course that had no major mud, log crossings or ignorant trail, just fun riding was the order of the day. We even managed to steer clear of the MX track at this facility (it looked great though!).

Post Vintage Expert row- Fred Hoess (705), Drew Smith (803), Josh Miller (812), Dave Smeal (63B) 3rd while Dave Kutskel followed in fourth overall. While the Intermediate classes had no celebrities, the competition was fierce especially for the 11 racers in PV +50 class, the largest class of the day. After a close challenge by Randy Marshall, Jack Petrilla took first place followed by Randy in 2nd, twelve seconds behind. Joe Cole won PV Open INT and Mike Zdybak Jr. claimed PV 200 INT.

By race time for the Vintage race (up to 1974/75) the temperature was in the mid-thirties when the flag waved. The 20 competitors warmed up soon enough as Josh Miller on his newly restored Yamaha MX 360 took the lead. Husky mounted ISDT veteran Drew Smith and Mid-Atlantic event coordinator Dave Kutskel gave chase but in the end Josh took the win. Josh said about the course, “I loved it!. Some notable first place finishes were Glenn Hershey in Vin 200 INT (Intermediate), Randy Marshall in Vin +50 INT and Joe Zito in Classic Novice. Joe came 4 hours from NJ to have fun on a cool Triumph twin.

Dust off an old bike and join us for the next race! We have a ten race series from April to October brought to you by Potomac Vintage Riders along with sponsors Paradise Cycle, Works Enduro Rider, Brunnett Custom Fab. and NorthWest Maico CZ. Check out the race schedule on: http://ahrma-northatlantic.org/CrossCountry. html or join our Facebook group at https://www. facebook.com/groups/456653767869135/ B

Fred Hoess (705) was your PV Overall winner As the more than 50 racers for the Post Vintage race (1975 to 1994) took to the start line, it was noted a couple more top names in the sport would be in the mix for the overall: Nationally known Fred Hoess, a many time ISDE medalist, National enduro winner and former Husqvarna factory team member mounted on a flawless XC-250 and Dave Smeal, an AHRMA (American Historic Racing Motorcycle Assn.) National and Regional champion on his trusty Yamaha IT-200. Out of the gate, Dave Smeal got the holeshot on the IT-200 and led the experts into the woods. Fred made a pass during the first lap for the lead. Randy Marshall and Glenn Hershey having fun He began turning lap times in the 13 minute ra nge while Smeal, Smith and Kutskel were in the 14 and 15 minute range so there was no catching Fast Fred as he took a well-deserved overall win! Where was Josh Miller? He worked his way up to 3rd and closing in on 2nd overall before his Husky XC-390 suffered 2016 Works Enduro Rider Team Riders: Service Available For All an untimely seizure Kyle and Jason Tino, Billy Schoeneberg Your Vintage Bike Needs and DNF. Ethan Bowlin soars to his second 250 C win of the series Round #2 of this ever popular series kicked off under sunny skies with shorts and t shirt weather to a great crowd of racers. Right around 400 entries on the day lined the gates at Doublin Gap in Shippensburg, Pa for an awesome day of racing. The plus 25 and plus 40 racers would lead off the day with a group of guys that have been doing this for years. Props to the older guys that come back year after year after year to chase the dream they love called motocross. Next up we saw that 85cc (12-15) group. These kids are flying and offered some great battles on the day. These are the guys that I’ll be calling older years from now as they continue to return and do battle on our local tracks. Of course I’m betting that many will go on to see some National Amateur Titles and some will even go Pro. One thing we can count on is that they’ll do it forever.

ATV Safety Week is June 3 through 12

ASI News Releases Mark Your Calendar: ATV Safety Institute Again Offers Free ATV Safety Training

IRVINE, Calif., March 28, 2016 The ATV Safety Institute will provide free rider training for the third straight year during ATV Safety Week. The ASI is again working with partners across America who are volunteering to provide free ATV RiderCourses and other safety education June 3-12. “We invite everyone with an ATV to take the first step toward safe ATV riding by taking an ASI RiderCourse. Come out to your local range, meet our instructors, have some fun, and learn. We’re making the class available to adults, youth and families all over the country early in the riding season,” said Cam Arnold, vice president, rider training, ATV Safety Institute. “ATV Safety Week is all about learning the eight

Golden Rules for safe riding, and we can think of no better way to highlight them than to offer our class at no charge.” The ATV RiderCourse is free for those who sign up during ATV Safety Week. Riders can find the closest training sites by going to ATVSafety.org and clicking on the ATV Safety Week logo. Additional locations will be added as they are confirmed. Riders should call 800-887-2887 to sign up for a class.

According to the last analysis of Consumer Product Safety Commission data, 92 percent of all ATV-related fatalities are the result of warned-against behaviors, such as youth riding on adultsized ATVs. During ATV Safety Week, riders can learn about the proper operation of their machine, find out about helmets and other proper protective gear, and learn ways to dramatically reduce risk. The ATV RiderCourse is also free year-round to purchasers of a qualifying ATV from an ATV Safety Institute member company. The ASI also offers a free E-Course, which is available online 24/7. This online course is available in three age-specific courses - adults, teens and children. Students learn how to apply the Golden Rules of ATV riding in an interactive setting. The E-Course includes videos, pictures, and games to make it a fun and effective learning experience for all ages. After finishing the course, users can take an ATV safety exam and receive a certificate of completion. The ATV Safety Institute’s Golden Rules: •Always wear a DOT-compliant helmet, goggles, long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots, and gloves. •Never ride on paved roads except to cross, when done safely and permitted by law – another vehicle could hit you. ATVs are designed to be operated off-highway. •Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs. •Never carry a passenger on a single-rider ATV, and no more than one passenger on an ATV specifically designed for two people. •Ride an ATV that’s right for your age, supervise riders younger than 16; ATVs are not toys. •Ride only on designated trails and at a safe speed. •Take a hands-on ATV RiderCourse and the free online E-Course. Call toll-free at 800-887-2887 or go to atvsafety.org to register. •The All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Institute, a not-for-profit division of the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America, was formed in 1988 to implement an expanded national program of all-terrain vehicle safety education and awareness. The ASI is sponsored by Arctic Cat, BRP, Honda, Kawasaki, KYMCO USA, Polaris, Suzuki, Textron and Yamaha.

Registration, Titling and Insuring Your ATV Who must register and title?

All ATVs in Pennsylvania, except ATVs used solely for business or agricultural purposes, need to be registered and titled with DCNR. ATVs used in Pennsylvania must be registered and titled with DCNR’s Snowmobile/ATV Section. The ATV registration and titling fees are NOT user fees for the privilege of using trails on state-owned land. The fees provide funding to administer the program, maintain trails in DCNR-managed parks and forests, and provide grants to profit and non-profit organizations for developing additional riding opportunities.

Two Types of Registrations Apply: • Registration

For ATVS used anywhere off of your own property or property leased by you, such as designated State Forest trails. $20 fee every two years

• Limited Registration

For ATVs used solely on your own land or land leased by you. Free registration No expiration, unless ownership of vehicle changes.

Plates and Decals

An ATV owner will be issued a registration plate for the vehicle. An expiration sticker to be affixed to the plate will be issued for standard registrations.

Liability Insurance

If you are using your ATV solely on land owned or leased by you, you are not required to get liability insurance. All other riders must carry liability insurance. Proof of that insurance must be carried with you when you ride. There are no minimum requirements or coverage standards established by DCNR or the Snowmobile/ATV Law for the liability insurance.
