Captains Quarters Happy Halloween everybody - I know it’s an early salutation but till the next issue comes out it will be past. October is a bitter sweet month for me. I know that summer has passed us by but the cooler temps are always welcome. The holiday is always fun too and can be controversial in some sects but I see it as good honest fun. Whatever you get yourself into on that night please remember to respect others property but have fun also dressing as your favorite character or monster or whoever you become for that one short evening. Even though summer is coming to an end, the racing was still red hot in September. In this issue find coverage from the North vs South Shootout at Miles Mountain. This yearly event has become a local favorite and this year once again set a new attendance record with over 650 racers on hand. The following weekend was 9/11, and many organizations had tribute races to mark Patriots weekend. The NEOC kicked off their fall harescramble season, with MAMA back in Pa, and Pagoda had their first annual Vet Classic race. After that we were off to Doublin Gap for the Yamaha All Star Pro Am. Expert racers came out to chase the cash and those valuable pro points with the big hit on the weekend being the Barbie Jeep Downhill races. Drivers were out in record attendance for that event with a good time being had by all. As I sit writing this letter we are also preparing for the Kevin Crine Memorial Race at Budds Creek this coming weekend. Kevin was a great guy and is still impacting the racers of this area. Tune in next issue for all the action from that. As always we thank you for reading our pages and for everyone’s support. It seems to be getting tougher all the time to keep this thing in print and I know that is very valuable to many. Please pass the word to potential sponsors and advertisers to support Brapp Magazine, we hope to be able to watch yet another set of 50cc racers go Pro. We also ask that you continue to like and share us on facebook, instagram and twitter and we thank you for reading and all of your kind messages and support that we do get throughout the month. We’ll see you at an event soon and please remember to stay caught up between issues at: www.brappmag.com B

Miles Mountain MX North South Shootout - Sept. 3-4, 2016

WNYMA rider Joanna Fake wins the Womens division

By: Brapp Mag Staff

This annual event held every Labor Day weekend at the beautiful Miles Mountain Motocross facility in Elkland, Pa has always been billed as the North - South Shootout. The event pits the MDRA Racing Series from the south vs the WNYMA Racing Series from the north and this year we saw the addition of a third group from the “north”, the USMX Racing Organization. We listed the class winners below and what state they are from but we didn’t dig into the full results to see who may have been crowned the championship racing organization. Not that it matters and I don’t think you can draw the boundaries by state as I’m sure there are some from PA that regularly race the WYNMA. I guess the important fact remains that several groups can come together and have a great weekend of racing and fun. I believe this year’s event set another attendance record at Miles Mountain with over 650 racers participating in the various events on the weekend. Saturday kicked off with an open practice day followed by night racing under the lights on Miles’ supercross track. Then Sunday awoke to a beautiful day and a full array of classes on their national caliber motocross track. The hospitality at this facility is always second to none and though it was a long day of racing, the event went off without a hitch. You can see the class champs below but also make sure to head over to: www.mdramxracing to see the full set of results. Also check out pictures from all classes along with a race day video at: www.brappmag.com B

Rd 4 The Cat 2 - September 10-11, 2016 Words by Noel - Photos by Tim Dennis

The Cat 2, Sept 10th & 11th fell on a historical sad day for our country as we all know, 9/11, so naturally the entire weekend was dedicated to all that serve this great country that stood up in the face of tragedy and united in the name of love. We have been told since we were little that heroes wear capes or a sports jersey, well that couldn’t be the furthest thing from the truth. Capes are only worn in fictional scenarios where there is always a happy ending and sports jerseys have a price tag that most can’t afford or constantly change whenever society says so. TRUE HERO’s are Non-fictional, give their time freely and never change for what’s cool at the moment. TRUE HERO stories do not always have a happy ending, in fact they take home sadness quite often after they freely and bravely enter a non-fictional scenario to help save or better another person’s life. All of the local volunteer & paid fire companies across the nation that go towards the danger we flee from, the police officers that enter battle zones in towns full of hate and confusion, soldiers who stand up for the RED WHITE & BLUE colors we love and believe in, first responders that see what no eyes should ever see. A HERO is someone that sacrifices, shows kindness, love and compassion for another human being or living thing. The world is full of them and they are not the ones you see on TV or magazines, they are the ones you see every day in your community, the grocery stores, post office, school functions, sitting next to you at a stop light. They look just like us, they go through the same things we do in life and yet they still find time and energy to go that extra mile to make our world a better place, so the next time you see one give them a nod of respect or be one yourself simply by sharing a little kindness or compassion. Heroes aren’t perfect, they are everyday people like you and I, with hearts that ache when they witness sadness but still walk towards it. In order to create future Heroes for this troubled world we live in, we have to give them something to emulate and imitate……. A SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENTS FOR COMING OUT THIS WEEKEND TO COOK AND HELP WITH DUST CONTROL. (see the full race report at: www.neocracing.com and see other images from the event at: www.timdphoto.com) Mike Lafferty wins the Main event

Dylan Leary is your Youth class champ

Carter Przemelewski wins the Pee Wee class

Dominic Griffith wins Oil Injected

Tony Shaw wins the O/A Vintage racing

Eighteen years of nursing from trauma, ER, ICU to training others in a variety of medical interventions does not give me the ability to avoid life’s curve balls but it does give me the tenacity to pick myself up and go on.” Hammes will be joined throughout the weekend by local police, EMS, fire department, and hospital staff to present an engaging line up of topics related to all types of powersports safety and accident scene management techniques. Middle Atlantic Motocross Association Race 8 - Sleepy Hollow MX

Mason Naecker wins the 80 (9-11) A division

Sept. 10 - 11, 2016 - By: Jim Bull Patriot’s weekend saw the return of the Mid Atlantic Motocross Association to the soils of south central Pa. This date of 9/11 will always be remembered by Americans as the day our country was attacked by terrorists. Whether foreign or domestic we may never know but what we do know is that we rallied that day, that year and our lives have been forever changed. We missed the Saturday racing action but arrived early Sunday morning for a tribute before riders meeting to those who were affected by this great tragedy. And we’ll ask again that you would continue to remember and support our military, our emergency personnel and all who sacrifice so we can do the things we love to do. Of course in this case it is to race motorcycles and a great day of racing was had by all. Below see some images and Sundays top five finishers in each division. For more racing action you can see the full results at: www.mamamx.com, images from all classes at: www.brappmag.com and a video recap of the day on our new blog at: www.jimbullphoto.blogspot.com B

Michaux Enduro South Penn Enduro Riders - Sept. 11, 2016 By: Steve Bowman - Club President

The 46th running of the Michaux Enduro hosted by South Penn Enduro Riders (SPER) is in the books: the event was held on September 11 and in memory of the 9/11 tragedy in NY we left the front row open. Also 4A was left open in memory of long time SPER member Joe Galie. Lack of rain in the weeks leading up to the event had the club concerned of extremely dry and dusty conditions. But on Friday night Mother Nature resolved that issue with about an inch of good soaking rain. That left the woods trails in superb condition for Sunday’s 8am start. Some of the dirt roads got a little dusty later in the day but for the most part conditions were about perfect!

Approximately 180 riders signed up for the event which is a “same loop twice” format. Each loop being approximately 35 miles with the gas and lunch break back at the start area. The course consisted of some fast open and loamy trails as well as some tight rocky twisty challenging trails. SPER gets a “parade permit” which allows them to close the dirt roads in the forest to the public so they can have a safer event for the motorcycles. Plus the requirement of a headlight and taillight and license plate is not needed. The event is a “start control” format so timekeeping is not necessary. Overall winner went to Ed Emery who was tied with Andrew DeLong with a score of 12 but Emery edged out DeLong on emergency seconds by a very slim margin. The rest of the top five overall were Brian Maco with a 13, Jed Haines with a 14 and Thorn Devlin with a 15. All from the “AA” Class The top “A” class rider was Steve Marshall with a score of 22. The top “B” class rider was Brett McCracken with a score of 26. The top “C” class rider was Christian Winkler with a score of 22. Please note that the “A”riders ride 8 sections. The “B” riders ride 7 sections and the “C” riders ride 6 sections.

SPER would like to thank the DCNR for allowing them once again to hold their event in the Michaux State Forest. All trails have been remediated and berms raked in etc. (Required by the DCNR) SPER uses three different loops in the forest and next year’s event will be a totally different loop from this year. Thanks to all the riders that came out and enjoyed a great event and hope to see you next year! B

The event started at 9:00 am and riders staged at the AOAA trailhead and parking lot. The trails were marked well and AOAA attendants were strategically located along the route to help participants if need be. The 40 plus mile route offered a connector to a local eatery to help boost the economy around the area. The day went off without a hitch and the AOAA looks forward to hosting this event for years to come.

About the AOAA The Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area (AOAA) is located in Eastern Pennsylvania, in the southeast part of Northumberland County in Coal Township, Pennsylvania. Northumberland County is located to the east of the Susquehanna River, strategically situated around 20 miles from both Interstate 80 and Interstate 81 making it accessible to much of the Northeast’s population within a few hours drive. Both the trail system’s name as well as that of the host community has ties to the area’s location in the anthracite coal region. Riders of most types of Off Highway Vehicles can come spend the day riding on 100’s of miles of marked trails. There are currently no overnight accommodations available right on the property but plans are in the works for a campground and local hotels and bed and breakfasts are available. Fees are minimal to ride here and all the info you need to make your journey here enjoyable and safe can be found on their website at: www.AOAATrails.com

The 7th Annual R&T Club Charity Trail Ride September 10th and 11th at Boyer Farm, Romney, WV. - By Chris Borger The 7th annual R&T Charity Trail Ride was held at Boyer Farm September 10th and 11th. The event benefits the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (Ride for Kids), and is in memory of R&T Club Member Ron Lowing. This was a two-day event with some fantastic trail riding all weekend. The Boyer Farm is a world class trail system that runs 13 miles. The course consists of A, B, C, and Pee-Wee loops for all skill levels. The course is mostly all single track woods action with some awesome AA hill climbs, rolling elevation changes, and a great network of grass track and grass trail action. The course was groomed to perfection and very well marked for the event. Weather conditions were perfect for the weekend, with a much needed rain shower Friday night, making for great trail conditions, but still somewhat dusty in the grass track areas. The camping areas were very nice, mowed and groomed for the weekend quests. The Saturday trail riding was great. Several riders hit the trails early in the day and got several laps in on all the loops. The R&T Club had the usual Saturday night Motorcycle Games for the kids, which included the famous “barrel roll” and “jousting” contests. Several of the youth riders participated in the games and everyone really enjoyed the fun. Sunday, in addition to trail riding, the club held their annual Time Match. The Time Match is optional for those who want to compete for the best time matches in their class. The goal in the Time Match is to get timed for a loop, then try to get as close as possible to your time on your next loop, with no time keeping devices. This was a lot of fun, especially for the kids. The Overall Champion was youth rider Evan Dietrich, with a 4 second variation on a 3-loop sprint! The club had huge trophies and a ton of give-a-ways for all the kids that participated in the Time Match.

The club provided several patrol riders throughout the weekend, and managed the event very well. Local Boy Scout Troop 32 from Romney provided the food and drinks all weekend for the participants, including burgers, dogs, and a great pancake breakfast. Their efforts were very much appreciated by all. This year’s event raised $10,000 for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (Ride for Kids). The club received many generous donations at the event, and had very generous sponsors donating many items. The R&T Club was founded in 1970, and is sponsored by the Dutrow Honda Dealership in Frederick, Md. R&T is one of the largest and most active Off-Road Motorcycle recreational riding clubs in the area, performing many community service events throughout the years. The club is an AMA chartered club, and is sanctioned by AMA District 6. R&T is also the #1 off-road fund raising club in the country for the Ride for Kids organization for the last 3 years. Pediatric Brain Tumors are one of the most deadly forms of childhood cancer, and the R&T club is greatly appreciative to all who came out to this charity event. On behalf of the R&T Club and the Ride for Kids organization, many thanks to all who came out to ride and make donations, and thanks go out to the sponsors: Ride On Moto, JT Motorsports, Wrench Rabbit, Dutrow’s Honda, and to Cyclemax for their on-site rider support all weekend. Also a very special thank you to our hosts, the Boyer Family for a great weekend at the farm and their support for the R&T Club and other great AMA events over the years. The R&T Charity Trail Ride is always the 2nd weekend in September at Boyer Farm. Join us next year for a great weekend of Riding! www.randt-club.com B

Dealers Welcome

By Coach Nick Lavella, Owner of Physical Industry Training, NASM CPT, FNS, Suspension Trainer, US Army Vet, and Avid Motocross Racer/ Enthusiast Building off of the past article in the September issue, I talked about how riding and racing can be very beneficial for your overall health and fitness levels. The quality of your riding and racing can be increased, and now I’d like to take this time to show you how to make your goals become reality.

BE SMART Effective goal setting starts here. SMART simply refers to: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. For all of our clients we start by sitting down and gathering information to help fill the blanks, and from here you can really start to see a picture form in your own mind. 1. Specific goals are ones that are clearly defined in a way that you can clearly understand that intended outcome. This means having a detailed description of what you want to accomplish, when you want to accomplish it by, and the action (s) that will be taken to achieve it.

337 Coldstream Rd. • Phoenixville, PA 19460 Toll Free 1.866.845.1531 • www.powersealusa.com

2. Measureable goals are important to help monitor your progress as you move through time spent training. This means that you’re managing your training. You could say “I want to become leaner” but a more measureable way to state that is to “decrease body fat 5% in 12-14 weeks.” 3. Attainable goals are those that are challenging but not unrealistic. You must be looking for ways to truly reach new levels of fitness, by keeping your training rides quick and light or by maintaining the same resistance during weight training, you will not reach those wanted performance qualities. 4. Realistic goals have an objective towards what you are willing and able to work on. You must truly believe that your specific goal you choose can be accomplished. Along with that goes the training program you decide to choose, I will describe this below, but for now think about what you’ve accomplished in the past and what were the conditions like? 5. Timely goals should always have a specific date of completion. Again, make the date realistic, but not too far distant in the future. Think about short, medium, and long term. (1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year)

AMA East Hare Scramble Championship Series - WNYOA Speedsville, NY August 28, 2016 By: Ken Held

The weather was absolutely perfect for Round 6 of the AMA East HS Championship Series. Hosted by WNYOA, New York States’ premier Off Road Race Series. would match the fastest from both the North and the South. Over 607 Motorcycle and Quad Racers ascended on the Speedsville, NY Farm. Promoter Kyle Gregrow of Cross Country Customs put a lot of time and effort into this event. The course was a combination of grass fields, rolling hills, Enduro X, hill climbs and tight woods. 357 Two Wheeled Competitors were vying for top positions. Although there were many racers from NETRA, VCHSS and other local Districts, the majority of the contestants were from ECEA and WNYOA. With the tight schedules that each series runs, it is extremely difficult to get the 2 sets of competitors at the same venue. The morning youth bikes started at 8 AM. All eyes were on the Beast from the East Mike Beeler and WNYOA’s Benjamin Wright. After 4 laps the checkered flag went to Wright from the 14-16 SM row with Beeler from the 12-13 SM row finishing just a few seconds behind. 3rd place OA on the podium was none other than local WNYOA pilot Jared Detrik also from the 12-13 SM line. Next up were the Pee Wee 50’s. They ran on a separate field across the property. Mostly rolling hills and grass track providing excellent spectator points. The battle was between AMA East Points Leader Austin Tsakanikas and local favorite Dikota Hamilton. After the 1st lap, the top 4 racers were all separated by less than 30 seconds. It appeared that Tsakanikas was battling clutch issues while Hamilton sensing something was wrong with Tsakanikas, put his bike on cruise control. Keeping them honest in 3rd place was another local favorite Mason Potter. 2nd place in the points, C.J. “Pretzel” Przemeleweski, was trying to overtake 3rd place Potter to no avail. 4th place is still good enough for “Pretzel” to retain 2nd OA in AMA East HS points. Congratulations however goes to Austin Tsakanikas for wrapping up the 50cc Championship with one round still to go. Now the battle will be for 2nd and 3rd place bragging rights. At 11:00 the Main event was lined up and ready to rumble. 233 racers took off into the off Camber fields and then into the single track woods. Immediately they were challenged with gnarly uphills littered with exposed roots, rocks, mud and ruts from the earlier heats. It was question of who wanted to it more. You really had to pin it up the hills as there was no turning back if you didn’t make it the 1st time. After approximately 28 minutes the top 3 AA’s came through scoring like a freight train on fire. Separated by

less than 3 seconds brought Craig Delong, Nick Davis and Series Points Leader Kyle McDonal. Back in 6th place about 20 seconds short of the leaders was 2nd in points SRT’s Wild Wally Palmer. Palmer who just flew in from the AMA EnduroX in Duluth GA, arrived 11 minutes before the start of the main event with a broken thumb. Talk about determination. Unfortunately for Palmer the top front runners were not waiting for Wally. They were on a tear. What made this event even more spectacular is that these 3 front runners have been racing against each other since they were on 50cc bikes. Notable local favorite Benjamin “Batman” Bouwens would fall victim to a mechanical issue on one of the Hill Climbs and was a whole lap down halfway through the event. After 4 laps it was Delong taking the Gold. A final lap pit stop by Davis allowed McDonal to take 2nd leaving Davis to settle for 3rd. It was a great battle and at no time was there more than 15 seconds between the front runners. So after Round 6, McDonal is creating quite a points spread and will take something short of a miracle for Palmer to move any further then 2nd place. See you at round 7 in VA. Henrietta Race of Legends and Youth

Greg Pamart teaches at the Friday school

Pagoda MC Sept. 9-11, 2016 Another spectacular event hosted on Patriots weekend in south eastern Pa. Jerry Fessler, D6 Vice President worked in conjunction with the fine folks at the Pagoda Motorcycle club to put on the first ever Henrietta Race of Legends and Youth day. The weekend kicked off on Friday with a motocross school taught by some of our “Legends of District 6” past and current pro racers. Attendees received instruction from some of the best in the business and proceeds went to a Vet payout race on Sunday to not only honor our local Vet racers but the veterans of our country who have helped protect us in the past and in the present. What a fitting weekend.

D6 Legends - Barry Carsten, Ty Wallace, Jerry Fessler, Randy Kastle, Tim Schmelyun, Steve Herman, Dave Kratz, Greg Pamart Instructors included the likes of Barry Carsten National #31, Greg “Frenchie” Pamart past French National Champion and owner of GPMX Schools, David Gratz National #65, Ty Wallace National #37, Steve Herman National #56 and Tim Schmelyun long time District 6 National number holder. All these guys cut their teeth on our local tracks and combined there is years of national caliber experience that was passed on to the schools attendees. Saturday offered a practice day then Sunday race day was a salute to Vet’s both on and off the track. Over $3000 was offered up in the age classes with the top three riders on the day being Greg Pamart, Barry Carsten and John Bowlin. Sunday also offered special prizes for the kids down on the Pagoda youth track. Pagoda is one of the few tracks in the area that still offers a separate youth program for beginner riders so props to them for that.
