Harley-Davidson Williams Grove Half Mile Story: American Flat Track.com Photos: Steve Koletar - www.koletarphotos.com

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (September 9, 2017) – Jared Mees (No. 9 Indian Motorcycle Rogers Racing Scout FTR750) put on another masterclass performance to take the win and clinch the American Flat Track AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines crown two races early at the Harley-Davidson Williams Grove Half-Mile presented by Appalachian Harley-Davidson. After nearly a quarter-century absence, it was a welcome return to Williams Grove Speedway as fans packed the house to witness the Pennsylvania native score his fourth overall premier class championship. 44 Cameron Smith and John Vanderlaan lead the AFT Singles qualifying action.

A view from turn one of the W.G Speedway on an awesome day for the American Flat Track Bikes!

“Man, it’s an honor to be able to come to Williams Grove -- I was born and raised 45 minutes from here -- and to clinch this championship in front of all my friends and family,” Mees said. “We had a phenomenal year. I had a magnificent team behind me. I don’t know what else to say. I give all the credit to those guys -- they work so hard week-in and week-out. The Indian was a phenomenal motorcycle for me from start to finish. It’s unbelievable. “To win a championship in the fashion we did this year and -- no offense, but to dominate it. To go out there and pull off nine wins and clinch the championship with two races to go, it was phenomenal. I never thought it would have happened, especially considering the talent of the other guys out there.” It also meant a lot to Mees to be able to make history, by scoring the brand’s first Grand National Championship title. “I wanted to be the guy on the Indian, the first to do it,” Mees said. “I wanted to be the guy to do everything on the Indian first. I wanted to dominate, and we did.” Although it looked like it was going to be Mees’ day to shine after he won both his Heat, Semi and left everyone in his dust during the Main, multiple red flags threw some uncertainty into the mix. And even after his championship rival Bryan Smith (No. 1 Indian Motorcycle Racing backed by Allstate Scout FTR750) crashed out of the race -- pretty much sealing the deal on the championship with Mees only needing four points -- Mees didn’t go easy. He held on to the win and crossed the line 0.232 seconds ahead of Brad Baker (No. 6 Indian Motorcycle Racing backed by Allstate Scout FTR750).

#9 Jared Mees leads as #14 Briar Bauman splits the Indian trio down the back stretch.

The American Flat Track Twins roar into Williams Grove Speedway’s turn 3 as the well-known Beer Hill Gang welcomes them. Wyatt Anderson (3rd ), Kevin Stollings ( winner ) and Kolby Carlile on the Singles Podium.

Captains Quarters Happy Halloween everybody, I know it’s still almost a month away but I wanted to get my scares in while I can. Although this holiday can sometimes be controversial I thought I’d share a bit of history on its origins here.

In This Issue:

From Wikopedia: Halloween or Hallowe’en (a contraction of All Hallows’ Evening), also known as All halloween, All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve, is a celebration observed in a number of countries on the 31st of October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day and Reformation Day. It begins the three-day observance of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed. It is widely believed that many Halloween traditions originated from Celtic harvest festivals that may have pagan roots, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain, and that this festival was Christianized as Halloween. Some academics, however, support the view that Halloween began independently as a solely Christian holiday. Don’t forget also that it’s a great day to get your candy fix in and dress up and be somebody that you normally aren’t. So, with that we have our history lesson for this issue. Everyone tell your teachers that you have it covered for the month and who ever said that Brapp Magazine wasn’t an educational tool for all the racers among us has it all wrong. Racing – oh yeah, that’s what we do. What a month September was for racing in our little scary neck of the woods. Lots of Pro Am motocross, barbie jeeps, pro flat track, Memorial races, charity rides, harescrambles and enduros and we have it all covered in this issue. Thanks to the hard work of many of our great contributors around the region, we can bring you all this. Make sure you check out all our regular columns and please solicit the advertisers in our pages. Without them Brapp Magazine would not exist and many of our racing opportunities would be less. Keep in mind that they not only spend their money here to attract your attention but many also sponsor the local races in one form or another. Besides, nothing beats local service and attention. Ok it’s off to our pages and let’s hope that the October racing can be half as great as it was in September. We’ll see you there. B

Focus On Basic Riding Techniques With Sean Koeller & FinalMoto MX Training

Whether you’re racing motocross, off-road, or trail riding for fun, focusing on basic techniques will go a long way to a better ride. In last month’s article we focused on your upper body and correcting bad habits. This month we will be looking at the lower body, from your hips to your feet. Adjusting the way you position your feet and hips as well as weight, the seat and pegs can all lead to more control and more comfort on the bike. Everyone who has ever ridden a motorcycle has been told to squeeze the bike more, but the actual act of squeezing the bike between your legs typically isn’t what you should be focusing on. The easiest way to control the bike and “squeeze” is to reposition your feet and legs on the bike. Riding on the balls of your feet, versus your arches, creates an acute angle in your ankles that will put downward force on the pegs and result in a more secure grip on the footpegs, but that’s only half of it. The next step is to focus on where you are pointing your toes. When your feet are on the pegs or out in front of you for balance in a turn your toes should be pointed straight or even slightly pigeon-toed; by doing this you are turning your knees and legs in and creating more contact against the bike. The easiest demonstration to show this is simple; standup straight with your feet shoulder width apart and your toes pointed straight forward and simply bend at the knees, your knees should follow your toes and point forward while you squat. Now do the same thing but turn your toes outward, your knees will follow and shoot outward. Imagine your bike between your legs, the natural way your knees move when your toes are pointed forward will allow you to keep more leg against the bike and “squeeze” better. A little more complex of a technique but one that is truly important is the way that you sit and move from your hips. The ideal seating position is to roll your hips forward, creating more of an angle at your hip joints and straightening your back. When doing this you sit more on your pelvis and less on your tailbone, you will have a more aggressive seating position and you will be able to keep your weight more forward by straightening your back and pushing your chest forward. Being able to stay forward more easily is keep to acceleration and cornering, it will also put more pressure on the seat of the bike allowing you to move in every direction and lean your body more sharply. It will also help weight the pegs even more by creating more pressure to your feet and legs by creating a sharper angle in your hips. A few simple adjustments to your lower body positioning can go a long way to helping your aggression and bike stability. Look for more riding tips and tricks each month in BRAPP Magazine. These riding tips are brought to you by FinalMoto MX Training, operated by Sean Koeller, AMA Pro License holder and AA Offroad racer. Mid-September took us to Shippensburg, PA for Doublin Gap’s Annual Yamaha All Star Pro-Am event. The weekend started off Saturday morning with open practice for all the racers in attendance. I heard over 50 pro/expert riders were there to get in some laps to chase the $6000 that was on the line in the Pro Am divisions. Saturday evening saw one of the more popular events in years past with downhill Barbie Jeep racing. This fun time now in its third year attracted over 60 competitors of all ages and saw the introduction this year of a new starting/launch pad. Fun was had by all whether they got down the hill on their wheels or in some other fashion. Later that evening Doublin Gap offered a catered BBQ for all in attendance as well as a classic rock band to take us through the evening.

The Barbie Jeep racing was red hot – see hundreds of pics at BrappMag.com

Skylar Whittington claims the Open C win

Sunday morning, we awoke to sunny skies along with a huge racer turn out and near perfect track conditions. The folks at Doublin have made their track a number one priority in recent years and all the feedback I’ve gotten has been great. What a day it was, good turnouts in just about all the classes plus 32 entries in the 250 A pro Am and qualifiers for the Open Pro Am. That’s right – 47 racers signed up to do battle and the racing was red hot. In the end, it would be Honda mount Bobby Piazza grabbing the overall in the Open division and Yamaha pilot Timmy Crosby taking the win in 250 racing action. Yamaha had a good day taking five out of the top ten spots in the big bike class and the top three spots in the lights or 250 division. In addition, Yamaha won a number of other classes on the day and you can see those racers posted here. Check out the top 10 finishers in each Pro Am class then to see the complete results for the day head over to either the Doublin Gap or MDRA website. You can find the link on this page plus check out close to 2000 images from the weekends action at BrappMag.com or on your BrappMag app. B See results from all classes at: www.doublingapmx.com

Whiskey Springs Bloody Skillet Feasibility Study Stakeholder Review. Check it out online here: https://t.e2ma.net/click/q8gefe/ aws2yk/6gmo6ub Compilation of Stakeholder Comments on ATV Connector Trail in Centre, Clinton Counties Now Available DCNR, through the contractor Larson Design Group, is conducting a study to examine the feasibility of constructing a motorized trail that would connect the existing Bloody Skillet ATV trail system in northeastern Centre County to the Whiskey Springs ATV trail system in western Clinton County, passing through the town of Renovo. Larson Design Group is responsible for proposing recommendations for a connector trail corridor. The first component of the feasibility study consisted of meeting with local and statewide stakeholders about their concerns and aspirations for a potential trail connector. The comments collected during a series of stakeholder meetings and through email during February through April are available in the Whiskey Springs Bloody Skillet Feasibility Study Stakeholder Review. The contractor currently is doing a field review of conceptual routes. Two upcoming public meetings have been scheduled for October 26 and November 9 from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. at the Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center at Lock Haven University. The objectives of these meetings are to review the findings of the stakeholder review, provide information on conceptual routes, and answer questions and concerns. The connector feasibility study is in addition to a statewide ATV study currently being completed by Moshier Studio and Pashek Associates. That study is researching and identifying opportunities to partner with local governments, nonprofits, and for-profit organizations to create and develop new ATV parks, trails, and facilities to meet the needs of ATV owners. DCNR currently maintains 273 miles of designated ATV trails on state forest lands. Visit the DCNR website for more information about ATV riding. B

Michaux Enduro Michaux State Forest

Enduro riders love to be in Brapp Magazine

Shippensburg, PA - September 10, 2017

This year’s event saw 173 entries Hosted by South Penn Enduro Riders. The 47th running of the Michaux Enduro is in the books.

Ed Emory is your 2017 Michaux Enduro champ

Several days of rain leading up to the event made for great trail conditions. There was very little mud and the dust on the dirt roads was tolerable. 173 riders from several surrounding states came out to enjoy a great day of riding in the mountains of South Central Pennsylvania with only 20 DNF’s. The total mileage of the “same loop twice” course was about 65 miles offering a good mix of single track, dirt roads and of course everyone’s Pennsylvania favorite… Rocks!!! Excellent food by Angie’s Home Cooking was available Saturday evening and all day Sunday. Representatives from Ryan’s Hope were selling 50-50 tickets with the proceeds going to fight childhood brain cancer. Thanks to everyone that donated. The overall win went to Husqvarna mounted rider Ed Emery from New Jersey following him in second place was Brian Maco and third-place went to Bobby Lapinski. Fourth overall went to Steve Mason and Drew Evans rounded out the top five. Row 11 was left blank in memory of the 9/11 tragedy in New York. Number 4A was used in honor of long time SPER member Joe Gallie who passed away in 2015. The awards that were given out were very cool and totally different from other years. They were cut out of metal with a very unique design and the T-shirts were awesome with the old-school ‘70s Yamaha theme. This particular course had not been used for three years and next year’s course will be totally different again from this year. All trails have been remediated to original or better condition by SPER as required by the DCNR. This is done to preserve the trails for the future. Special thanks go out to the DCNR for allowing us to hold the event on state forest land.

Many thanks to the Michaux Forest for hosting this event

Thanks to all the riders and everyone else that helped to make this a great event. Looking forward to 2018 as SPER plans to host the 48th running of the Michaux Enduro! B

A LETTER FROM ONE OF OUR READERS DEAR BRAPP MAGAZINE, I WOULD LIKE TO SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING LETTER TO BE PRINTED IN YOUR MAGAZINE OR FB PAGE. HOPEFULLY YOU FIND THE LETTER INFORMATIVE AND WORTHY OF PRINT. IT IS AN UNFORTUNATE CIRCUMSTANCE OF OUR TIMES AND STORIES LIKE THIS SHOULD BE PRINTED MORE REGULARLY IN YOUR MAGAZINE TO PROMOTE RIDERS RIGHTS AND RECREATIONAL DISCRIMINATION. I HOPE YOU CAN PUBLISH MY STORY TO CREATE AWARENESS OF THIS TRAGEDY TAKING PLACE ON PUBLIC LAND ACROSS OUR NATION. PLEASE OMIT NAMES/PLACES AS NECESSARY, BUT THE CORE STORY IS TOO IMPORTANT.

THIS IS A STORY THAT SHOULD BE IMPORTANT TO ALL THAT RIDE AND ENJOY OUR SPORT.

THE CRACKDOWN... I WAS RIDING MY MOUNTAIN BIKE AT A PARK CALLED BLUEBERRY HILL IN GIBBSBORO, NJ THE OTHER DAY. THERE WERE ALL KINDS OF COOL HILLS AND ROLLING TRAILS ABUNDANTLY AVAILABLE FOR PUBLIC USE. SO FAR THIS SOUNDS REALLY GOOD RIGHT? WE’LL AS AN OFF ROAD ENTHUSIAST I HAD A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE. INSTEAD OF SEEING GREAT RUNNING OR BIKING TRAILS, WHAT I SAW WERE OLD DIRT BIKE AND QUAD TRAILS CREATED YEARS AGO BY OFF ROAD RIDERS, BUT WERE NOW PAVED OVER WITH ASPHALT. I COULDN’T HELP BUT BE AMAZED AT THE VAST NETWORK OF AMAZING TRAILS. AS I RODE MY BIKE THROUGH THE PARK, WHICH I REMEMBER BEING A POPULAR OFF-ROAD SPOT IN YEARS PAST, I RECALLED HOW THE LOCAL TOWNSHIP CRACKED DOWN HARD ON ORV RIDERS. THEY ISSUED TICKETS FOR TRESPASSING, CONFISCATED PERSONAL PROPERTY, AND ISSUING SUMMONSES FOR ANYTHING ELSE THEY COULD FIND. RIDERS WERE CONSTANTLY TOLD TO LEAVE AND NEVER COME BACK. THE MESSAGE WAS CLEAR, THE PUBLIC IS NOT ALLOWED IN THESE WOODS AND WE DO NOT WANT OFF ROAD VEHICLES MAKING TRAILS IN THE FOREST. WE ALL KNOW THIS TRAGIC STORY, AS IT IS TAKING PLACE ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.

Hey all, October is one of seven months throughout the year that has 31 days in it. I find it ironic that the book of Proverbs from the Bible has 31 chapters in it. As verse two below states, their purpose is to teach people Wisdom and Discipline. I don’t know about you and I’m not sure what your beliefs are but I would bet you would agree that some of us could benefit from a little more Wisdom and Discipline in our lives. If not yourself, I’m sure that you might wish some others would have more of these traits. I would ask that you check out the first couple verses below then read just one chapter each day of the month in October. It will only take 5-10 minutes and who knows, maybe you’ll find something that will help you in an area where you could use either more Wisdom or Discipline. If you don’t have a Bible just log onto: www.biblehub.com and search Proverbs. THE PURPOSE OF PROVERBS Proverbs Chapter 1 (NLT) 1.These are the proverbs of Solomon, David’s son, king of Israel. 2. Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of the wise. 3. Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just, and fair. 4. These proverbs will give insight to the simple, knowledge and discernment to the young. 5. Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser. Let those with understanding receive guidance. 6. By exploring the meaning in these proverbs and parables, the words of the wise and their riddles. 7. Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

THE TWIST... SO AFTER A DECADE OF HARD CRACKDOWNS ON ORV RIDERS FOR TRESPASSING, AMAZINGLY THE PROPERTY WAS CONVERTED INTO A PUBLIC PARK FOR WALKERS, RUNNERS, PET OWNERS, AND BICYCLE RIDERS. AT THIS TIME, ALL KINDS OF FUNDING WERE THROWN AT THE PROJECT WITH PARKING, SIGNS, TRAILS, STEPS, BRIDGES AND OTHER PERMANENT STRUCTURES CONSTRUCTED ON THE PROPERTY. THE TRAILS THAT OFF-ROAD VEHICLES CREATED YEARS BEFORE, WHOM WERE TOLD WERE NOT LEGAL AND ENVIRONMENTALLY SENSITIVE, WERE NOW PAVED OVER AND OPENED TO THE PUBLIC. THE VERY REASONING THE TOWNSHIP USED TO CRACKDOWN ORV RIDING, THEY THEMSELVES WERE GUILTY OF COMMITTING. BUT OF COURSE, WE KNOW ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS WERE NEVER THE REAL REASON FOR RUNNING OFF ROAD VEHICLES FROM THE FOREST.

Coty Schock Rides On Pro Action Suspension

THE END RESULT... SEVERAL YEARS AFTER THE CRACKDOWN, THE PROPERTY IS NOW 100% OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FOR USE BY ALL EXCEPT FOR (YOU GUESSED IT) OFF ROAD VEHICLES. TRAILS ARE WIDER THAN EVER, WHOLE SECTIONS OF FOREST ARE CUT OPEN FOR RECREATIONAL USE, TRASH IS SHEWN ALONG THE TRAIL, JUNKIES ARE GETTING HIGH, AND PERMANENT ASPHALT RIDDLES THE FOREST FLOOR. SO AS I RIDE MY MOUNTAIN BIKE THROUGH TRAILS ORIGINALLY CREATED BY OFF ROAD RIDERS OF YEARS GONE BY, I CAN ONLY THINK ABOUT THE ABSOLUTE HYPOCRISY THAT HAS TAKEN PLACE AT THIS ONCE OFF ROAD PARADISE.

PLEASE HELP END RECREATIONAL DISCRIMINATION! PLEASE GET INVOLVED WITH THE AMA AND YOUR LOCAL OFF-ROAD CLUBS TO ORGANIZE AND FIGHT FOR
