Captains Quarters Happy Labor Day everybody and this is a big one, isn’t it? It’s an extra day off work, just because we work hard as Americans. And yes, it usually involves hot dogs, hamburgers and all that goes along with that. Sadly, it also signifies the end of summer. From the US Department of Labor: Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Can I get an Amen… Anyhow, I would encourage you all to spread this message. No I’m not talking about the hotdogs or the end of summer. I’m asking you all to encourage those that’s don’t have a job, that aren’t helping create social and economic achievements in our country to go out and do something about it. Now I know sometimes there are circumstances, but in the same token, if everyone would do their share and really go out there and go after it, I believe the world would be a better place. Anyhow I’m done with my preach, pretty soon you all will be calling me preacher man but that’s ok too. I know one more thing however that Labor Day brings, and that’s the annual North South shootout at the beautiful Miles Mountain Motocross facility. Last year saw over 600 entries I believe and this year promises to be just as good. This event offers Saturday practice and night Supercross then Sunday racing on one of the coolest tracks in the northeast. If you don’t know about it, check them out online. In this issue find a few of our Loretta Lynn Amateur National Motocross Champions for 2016 along with a lot of great off road race coverage, some short track, great deals from our advertisers all along with our regular features. Speaking of our advertisers, please shop local if you can. They support what you do and really want to earn your business so please give them the first shot before you go running out of the area. The 1st Mountaineer Vintage Enduro 7/23/16, Terra Alta, WV
By -Richard Colahan and Glenn Hershey Its a few minutes before the 9:00 am Start (key) time for the enduro and the first bikes are starting to queue up. The usual collection of enduro bikes…Husqvarna’s, Penton’s, Yamaha IT’s, Ossa’s, Suzuki PE’s, some BSA singles and even two Triumph twins. But wait … this isn’t an enduro in the 70’s or 80’s … its 2016! That’s right … the AHRMA (American Historic Racing Motorcycle Assn.) Penton Products LLC Cross Country Series has added a traditional time-keeping enduro to its schedule and 92 Vintage and Post-Vintage entries are set to hit the trail at McKee’s Sky Ranch in Terra Alta, WV. Set in the scenic northern end of WV, Terra Alta is practically a stone’s throw from MD and PA. The enduro is a wish that land owner Tom McKee had for years and after working with Dave Kutskel’s Mid Atlantic XC Series trail crew…and some experienced enduro hands from the Valley
A change to 30 mph for a gravel and paved road section brought them to the final secret check-in just 3 miles from the finish. Back into the woods on some tight single-track trail with 2-track connectors and at the finish check TC, Hoess and Miller are the only 3 riders to drop only 3 points … giving them all 5 late points for the day. However, first time enduro rider Miller had the misfortune to burn the final check-in by about 4 seconds … his only burned check of the day … bumping his score up to 7 and resulting in 3rd place overall. The tie between Fast Freddie and TC was broken by seconds recorded at the 2 emergency checks with the Grand Champion trophy going to 19 time ISDE Gold Medalist Fred Hoess. ISDT Veteran Drew Smith had mechanical issues early on and dropped 9 points for 4th overall. Tim Shephard and Perry Hodges each dropped 10 points to round out the top 6 scores. Ted Atkinson rode his 1973 Honda Elsinore to a 12 point score and was awarded the Vintage Class Champion trophy (for bikes up to 1974). The trail crew was very pleased to take a few points from the fast guys, yet provide a course with a 90% finish rate, including both of the Triumph twins. Perhaps the most impressive ride of the day was by Mark Williams who dropped only 40 points on his 1971 Triumph T100C. As Bill Baird proved back in the day, a 1960’s era Triumph 500 can certainly be set up as a very competent woods bike. However by 1971 the T100C had evolved to basically a street bike with some high mufflers…which is what Mark rode with the only change to some knobby tires. Mark’s comment at the finish line? ... “Never again…on THIS bike!” On the other hand, Joe Zito’s finish on his 1972 Triumph 750 was no surprise…Joe has been riding “the beast” to much success in this year’s Mid Atlantic XC series. But 66 early/ burn points didn’t do his score any favors! I’m sure he will brush up on time-keeping for next year.
Forge Trail Riders (of PA) … the enduro became a reality on July 23rd. Leading the field on row 1-A was 4 time National Enduro Champion Terry Cunningham (TC), the Grand Marshall for the event. The first section was 4.4 miles long using most of the wooded XC course, with a section of the famed McKee’s grass track added. Approaching the first checkpoint the course dipped out of the woods for another short grass track section providing the spectators with some great action, then back into the woods before hitting the check. Most riders dropped from 5 to 12 minutes at the first check but 4 riders blasted in dropping only 2: Cunningham, Fred Hoess, Josh Miller, and Tim Shephard. After a mileage reset that got most riders back on time they departed north on a series of Preston County paved, gravel, and rough jeep trails. With modern enduro computers not allowed good timekeeping skills using a clock, route sheet and odometer were needed to zero the next 2 checks. Check #3 was tucked behind a house and served as a check-in to a tough, rocky, muddy 3.6 mile long jeep trail. At 24 mph only 6 riders were able to maintain the pace and zero the check-out. After a 30 minute gas stop/break at a tiny country store next to nowhere, the riders resumed their ride on a mix of gravel and farm roads. Another secret check-in led to another 3.6 mile long muddy jeep trail, but this one eased up a bit towards the end and as a result more than one rider made up a bit too much time before hitting the check-out a minute early! Ouch! The final reset on the course was not to get riders back on time, but to give them a few minutes to enjoy the view north from Gregg’s Knob, the highest point on the ride at 3,200’ feet.

At the awards ceremony TC was gracious enough to autograph all of the award plaques and also spent close to an hour sharing some stories of his days as a factory Husqvarna racer and employee. Plenty of questions from the gathered riders and some secrets revealed … such as Dick Burleson’s belief that leaking fork seals were simply an indication of a properly working fork … and just how TC REALLY got those parts he urgently needed to fix his Husky Auto just minutes before a big race! Special thanks go to the small army of volunteers that worked to make the 1st AHRMA Vintage Enduro a success and especially to Tom and Debbie McKee for not only making their property available but for also persuading the folks of Preston County to share their back roads with some old dirt bikes! Yamaha Demo Days at Rock Run Summer Blast
August 11-14, 2016 By: Brapp Mag Staff Every year the folks at Rock Run Recreation in Patton, Pa have their four day summer blast that offers attendees 100’s of miles of trails to enjoy, evening entertainment, an obstacle course competition, overnight camping, a vendor row and again this year demo rides from Yamaha Motor Corporation who is the main sponsor of this event. This year Yamaha debuted their new 2017 YXZ1000R SS SE which takes their pure sport platform and offers a Sport Shift 5-Speed Sequential Shift Transmission which in essence removes the need for the manual foot clutch and moves the paddle shifters to the steering wheel. Earlier this year we got to drive the manual clutch model which was a true blast to motor around in however I left that day with the notion that although very cool, this wasn’t the machine for me. I believe that application would be more suited for wider open riding areas that we don’t always have access to here in the woods of Pa. @GEOFFGASKINFMX July 23, 2016 - The Brapp Mag staff headed to the beautiful Miles Mountain Motocross facility in Elkland, Pa for their annual Mayhem on the Mountain event. Track owner Phil Egleston’s roots go back to Freestyle FMX and even though he builds some of the nicest MX tracks around, his heart still loves to jump Freestyle MX. Every year he invites a few of his friends out to put on a show for the locals and this year they again offered a mx practice day, a jet ski demo in the pond put on by Moto Option and some Night Supercross racing to add to the show. Mike Stryker - Junior 25 plus National Champion: This year at Loretta’s I got my first championship that I have dreamed about since I started racing. It seems so crazy after a pro career that coming back to Loretta’s I would be racing many of the same guys. It was so much fun doing it with my friends and family !! Seth Hammaker - Super Mini 1 National Champion and Super Mini 2 second place: This Year at Loretta Lynn’s I came home with a Supermini 1 (12-15) National Championship, and also a second overall in the Supermini 2 (13-16) class. Practice day started off really well for me. Just tried to learn the track and make sure my bike was dialed in. Tuesday I had my first Moto of Supermini 1 and I pulled out a 4th place finish. Wasn’t thrilled with how I rode but took the positives from the Moto. Then on Wednesday, I got a super good start and then passed into the lead on the first lap. I lead about the first half of the race and then I made a mistake and second place passed me. I ended up getting second. Thursday morning a big thunderstorm rolled through making the track super muddy. I end up pulling the holeshot and took a smooth ride to the Moto Win! That one Race changed my confidence for the rest of the week. My Second Moto of the Supermini 2 class did not go as planned. First lap I had a bad get off through the sand sweeper, putting me back as far as 17th place on the first lap. I put my head down and charged my way back to 5th when we crossed the finish. Friday evening was going to be the last race for Supermini 1. I knew I had to put myself in a good position to get the championship. I got off to a great start, passed into first about the second lap and just cruised to the finish safely, earning myself the 2016 AMA Loretta Lynn’s National. Overall, the week was a success. Coming into the week I knew I was going to be competing for a championship and we did what we came there to do. I want to thank everyone who has believed in me and who has helped me get to where I am today! Jordan Jarvis - Girls Sr. and Women 14 plus National Champion: This year at Loretta’s, I had the most memorable year yet! I was excited and nervous as we arrived in TN. I wanted to get through all my motos with little to no mistakes and giving it my best every time I got on the track. In both Girls Sr. and Women’s 14+ I went 1-2-1 for 1st overall. I was so happy with my two championships because I worked hard training and riding all year. I am very happy that it paid off. I had so much fun with my family, friends and sponsors that were there to cheer me on. It made it even better, when I was on the podium and was able to see how happy it made them. I would not have been able to win without them supporting me throughout the years and especially when I needed it the most.... working up to and being at Lorettas! Katie Benson - Girls Jr (9-13) second place: This year at Loretta’s I got two out of three holeshots and finished 2nd in all of my motos. I’m proud of myself but with another year in the same class I’m going to train harder at South Of The Boarder to try to win next year! Kevyn Depinho - 50cc Shaft National Champion: This Year at Loretta’s I was a little nervous because last year was my first year and I ended up in 20th place overall. I already knew that nothing was easy at Loretta’s because there were people from all around

the country, but all my hard work of the year was worth it. WHERE TO RIDE Allegheny National Forest - The federally-operated Allegheny National Forest has more than 100 miles of ATV trails. ATV trail season runs from the Friday before Memrial Day through the last Sunday in September. Winter season is from December 20 to April 1. Groemm Wins 2016 Shotgun Hare Scramble
HMDR Celebrated 20 Years of the Shotgun
By: Kenny Held - VP ECEA - AMA East HS Coordinator Round 5 of the AMA East was hosted by the High Mountain Dirt Riders just outside of Catawissa PA, part of the ECEA Series. This was a 2 day event with all youth events on Saturday and adults on Sunday. A total of 170 youth converged on the “South Side” Conservation Estate. Rain the day before provided primo conditions for the first two heats, Pee Wee and Juniors. Unfortunately the clouds could be seen rapidly approaching from the West. Minutes before the Youth Main flag dropped, the sky opened up. “10 seconds” was announced in a torrential downpour. What made things even more interesting was that the start had a slight incline mandating much needed throttle control for the hole shots. All lines got off safely and the race was under way. 1st place O/A went to “Mad Max” Fernandez from the 2nd row 12-13 Super Mini. Reece Bruner and Michael Beeler Jr were also in contention but couldn’t keep up with Max’s pace. Unfortunately we later learned that the favorite, Beeler, suffered coolant problems due to mud covered radiators. Determined we later saw Beeler pushing his bike through scoring on the final lap for 4th place points. 2nd place going to Reece Bruner and first time on the O/A podium was Tim Brotherton. In the Pee Wee Heat, it was local favorite Austin Tsakanikas taking 1st place. In the Juniors Heat it was Joseph Rainone. Both Tsakanikas and Rainone ran their own race with substantial leads over 2nd place. At this point it looks like Austin will lock up the AMA East 50cc Championship at round 6. Unfortunately Joey has some catching up to do as he missed 2 Rounds due to injuries. The ECEA Fast Kidz and the Slip N Slide
Sundays’ events had perfect weather. Unfortunately Saturdays visit from Zeus left mud and ruts throughout the course. The club was on it and made some needed course changes. The “C” Event started on time and were treated to 6 miles of single track and grass fields with incredible elevation changes. Trail boss Mike Soudas Jr typically creates a clover leaf design enabling spectators to see their racers several times throughout each lap. Coming through in 1st place on lap 1 was once again “Mad Max” Fernandez from the now “Schoolboy Class” several rows back. Max was hanging it out and just slamming his bike into the turns. Covered in mud from passing the rows ahead of him, Max was turning 26 minute lap times. Although Schoolboy is currently not AMA East HS points paying, the AMA is currently in the process of adding SB 1 and SB 2 for 2017. Max went on to take the O/A with Mike Beeler Jr in 2nd place and Sportsman/Industry Professional Marc Grossman in 3rd. When interviewed at the end of the race Grossman was quoted as saying “OMG those kids are extremely fast. I tried my hardest just to Jesse Groemm center wins the overall.

The top 3 in the AMA East points paying classes went to Brandon Rymarzow 1st place, Matt Brotherton 2nd place and Austin Mclean in 3rd. 1:00 brought us the main event. We had 13 AA racers in attendance and battling for the O/A are Kyle McDonal, Wild Walley Palmer and late to the series, Thorn Devlin. Pre race interviews revealed the Devlin was racing on a borrowed bike as his current race sled blew a motor the day before. Also in attendance was GNCC Racer Jesse Groemm. Groemm also plagued with difficulties as his truck broke down while en route to the event. He was rescued by a passing fellow racer on the side of the road. Groemm barely making it to the start line on time. The flagged dropped on the 8.5 mile course with ECEA favorite Billy Schoenberg taking the hole shot with Kyle McDonal and Jesse Groemm in tow. After the 1st lap at 31:50 it was Jesse Groemm with a 20 second
lead over Devlin. In 3rd place it was McDonal, Current points leader. Hot on his trail was SRT’s Wild Walley Palmer. This was to be a 4 lap race and at the end it was Groemm taking the checkers. 2nd went to McDonal. Battling clutch issues was Devlin rounding out the top 3. In a post race interview with Devlin, we learned that he was unaware the bike was equipped with an Auto Clutch the morning of the event. This was something the racer was not familiar with but motored on for a great finish. In all, 470+ racers converged on the small town of Catawissa with 4x’s as many spectators. Who is Sonic you ask? Matt and his brother Andrew first got hooked on riding off road when they were just young boys. When the flag dropped it was none other than our 50cc points leader KTM Mounted Austin Tsakanikas who was leading for the first two laps. On the 3rd lap, Cobra Mounted Canyon Richards began to gain on the front runner and eventually made the pass. Richards who just returned from Loretta Lynns was hammering down. Richards is not normally accustomed to riding more than the 10 minute motos needed to continue to hammer down, as Tsakanikas was not going down without a fight. After 50+ minutes it was Richards getting the checkers with Tsakanikas less than a minute down in 2nd. 3rd place also had its share of battles. Carter Przymewski and Keith Tepper were banging bars and swapping paint for seven laps. In the end It was Cobra mounted Keithfrom Tepper Bryce Shelly Telford, PA securing 3rd.

The top racers in the 10-11 65 went off without a glitch. Unfortunately the 7-9 65’s showed up with a multitude of missions. They not only want to beat each other but they want to pass the 10-11 65’s. Off they went 22 strong. Next went the trail and Jr Girls followed. After lap one it was Burke Marsiglia with a 20 second lead over 2nd place Austin Seth. Sitting in 3rd a few seconds back was Kyle Grenewicz. Before long the heat and the technical terrain began to take its toll on the front runners. Biding his time in 4th place was Joey Rainone. Joey began picking his way through the crowd with his beater t shirt. By the 3rd lap he was in the lead. Unfortunately both Marsiglia and Grenewicz suffered mechanical issues while Seth gave too much too soon and began to tire. All the while those 7-9’s were creeping up. By the 4th lap, Caleb Baltimore and Kenito Held were sitting in the top 5. Now the battle changed from class leaders to O/A leaders. By the final lap it was Rainone taking the checkers with Baltimore and Held finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively from the 2nd row.

Think about any of the off-road engagements you do on a motorcycle or ATV. Especially when you consider racing; on the trails or on an enclosed course, the demands are always there. You know what you experience during any amount of time spent on your machine. After several minutes, body temperature rises, muscles are being used more frequent and at a higher intensity, your balance and breathing is tested, and at the end of the day, it’s the most enjoyable experience. All of this leads to an optimal performance of the human machine when certain variables are practiced correctly. Optimal performance can be viewed as having increased strength, endurance, stability of joints, controlled posture, improved cardiorespiratory efficiency, increased speed, agility, and quickness, flexibility, decreased body fat, increased metabolic efficiency, increased tensile strength of ligaments, tendons, and muscles, and overall mental stability. Motocross hits on every aspect I just mentioned above. These are qualities every athlete and functional human being desire to have, all to help maintain or increase their quality of life. This is why I believe Motocross is the best activity for any individual looking to better themselves as a whole. Quality of life is everything, and for those of us who live to ride, quality of riding is our quality of life. Keep Riding and Keep Training! Saturday`s race day will include, the sure to be hotly contested, KEVIN CRINE DASH FOR CASH. The five lap sprint awards the winner $574 which represents Kevin`s first Pro-number. Awards will be paid to the top eleven finishers as follows: 2nd Place $274, 3rd Place $70, 4th Place $66, 5th Place $63, 6th Place $60, 7th Place $58, 8th Place $52, 9th Place $47, 10th Place $36 and 11th Place $32. These numbers all represent Kevin`s national numbers. There will be no entry fee for this race. First 40 riders to sign up may participate. Last year`s winner for the KEVIN CRINE DASH FOR CASH was Tony Archer. Saturday evening post-race events, with M.A.M.A and the Crine Family, will include good times and dinner donated by Trader’s Restaurant. The evening will include video of Kevin`s racing experiences, reminiscing over some great pictures and stories of Kevin shared by his fellow racers, friends and family. On Sunday, Ty Wallace, former teammate, pro-rider and friend will be riding Kevin`s last bike in a parade lap before racing begins. Kevin was an extremely talented racer from Southern Maryland who started racing in M.A.M.A. at the age of 14 in 1988. In that same year, Kevin became the only M.A.M.A. racer to advance from novice to expert in one year. Five years later, Kevin made his Pro-national debut at Budd’s Creek in the 125cc class. Kevin went on to become one of Maryland`s greatest riders ever by achieving multiple Supercross and Motocross national numbers for 10 consecutive years. A feat that few ever achieve. Kevin`s work ethic and dedication to the sport of motocross turned many heads in the industry. Our local motocross family is very proud to have had Kevin as part of our community. Kevin was not only an outstanding racer; off the track he was a true blessing to be around. Kevin was always a very positive person and was always willing to help anyone. He was, and still is, a true inspiration to his fellow racers and their families. Kevin`s death in 2006 is still fresh in the minds of his family and friends. Kevin was very well-known and remembered in the motocross community and we want to honor his life and legacy by hosting a memorial race in his memory. Hope to see everyone there!

WNYOA hosted its 10th round this past weekend: Scooters at Blinn Brothers farm, promoted by Scottie Rich and his family. This track was full of surprises with a hill climb they called Gargantuan, an enduro cross section that was definitely a crowd pleaser and even a school bus that you raced through the center of. Due to a drought like conditions, the dust on the track was untamable but the riders pushed through and braved whatever the nine miles of track would throw at them. The race competition was intense for a lot of the classes today. In mini bikes, Benjamin Wright from Gillet, Pa dominated the Super Mini 14-15 year old class taking the overall for the day followed next by Anthony Powers from Van Etten. NY and completing the podium with 3rd overall was Colby Davis from Berkshire NY both riding in the Super Mini 12-13 class. Going into the afternoon races I knew the race day was only going to get better. In the AA line, (expert class) Matthew Keefer grabbed the holeshot and it was not going to be easy to catch him. The first half of the race he was battling with Brett Ward until something happened that caused Ward to pull off the track. Keefer was able to gap himself out between 2nd place and take the win for the day followed by Alex Dzikiewicz of Newfield NY and Mark Fortner of Westfield NY.

The Adult quads were up next and Marty Christofferson Jr from Richford NY pulled the hole shot. It was a battle back between Christofferson and Hunter Hart from New Field NY. These two took the battle right to the finish line finishing within a second of each other followed in third by Greg Covert from Ithaca NY. Overall Scooters at Blinn Brothers Farm was an unforgettable race and I can’t wait to see what the Rich family has up their sleeves for next year. B
