Captains Quarters Happy Labor Day everybody and welcome back to another great issue of Brapp Magazine. Thanks to you all, we are still here.
In This Issue:
As slow as August was for us here at Brapp Mag, September will be just the opposite, full throttle busy. We took a little time off last month to vacation and refresh and now we are back and ready to rock right through the end of the season. In this issue find some great content from some of our awesome contributors. As much as we need all you guys we also need them just as much because we can only get to so many events. Our main feature this month highlights our champions from the Loretta Lynn Amateur Nationals last month in Tenneesse. A huge shout out to our cover boy Landon Palmer for his hard work and determination to bring home the gold racing in the 50cc divisions. Also a big shout out to our friend from NY, Justin Cooper. Coop showed the expert boys who the boss was down at the ranch then went on and grabbed a solid 5th place finish in his first Pro event at Unadilla. I tell you what, if I was a Pro I would be keeping an eye on this guy. Also in this issue find AMA National HS coverage along with highlights from the ECEA’s first ever Sprint Enduro hosted by the High Mountain Dirt Riders. We have a club story on how you can be a part of the action at the Pagoda Motorcycle Club and plenty of info on upcoming events and where to ride stuff. September, well, just hold onto your hats. We have the annual Miles Mountain Labor Day race along with the Yamaha All Star Pro Am at Doublin Gap featuring that now famous Barbie Jeep racing and the Kevin Crine Memorial Race at Budds Creek at the end of the month.

AMA ANNOUNCES 2017 AMA U.S. MOTOCROSS OF NATIONS TEAM Zach Osborne, Cole Seely and Thomas Covington to represent country in United Kingdom PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Three of America’s fastest motocross racers will represent the United States at the 2017 Fédération Internationale de Motocylisme Motocross of Nations at Matterley Basin in Winchester, United Kingdom, on Oct. 1.

For 2017, the U.S. Motocross of Nations Team includes Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Zach Osborne and Thomas Covington, and Troy Lee Designs American Honda’s Cole Seely. “This year’s team is immensely talented,” said AMA Director of Racing Kevin Crowther. “Zach, Cole and Thomas are accomplished riders, who have the aptitude and skill to capture the world championship. And they will, undoubtedly, give every ounce of effort to bring home gold.” Seely will race in the MX1 class, bringing his experience from competing in professional Motocross and AMA Supercross events, including a second overall finish in 2014 in the 250SX West Coast Class of the AMA Supercross Series Championship and a third overall finish in 2015 in the 450SX Class. “I think it is important to have someone who is excited to be on the team,” Seely said. “I’m stoked to make it this year and represent the country.” Osborne, who will compete in the MX2, secured the 2017 250SX East Coast AMA Supercross Series Championship in May and currently leads the points standings for the 2017 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross series. “Being chosen to represent Team USA at the FIM Motocross of Nations has been a huge goal and dream of mine for a very long time,” Osborn said. “I couldn’t be happier to travel to the United Kingdom to race and ride my very best to bring the championship trophy back to the USA.”

After spending the past three years competing in the MXGP Series and winning the 2015 GP of Mexico, Covington will compete in the Open class. “I am truly honored to be picked for the United States’ Motocross of Nations Team,” Covington said. “I am really looking forward to getting to represent my home country overseas.” AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legend Roger DeCoster will once again manage the team as it seeks to secure the world championship. He currently manages the Red Bull/KTM AMA Motocross and Supercross teams and was a part of six victorious FIM Motocross of Nations teams in the 1960s and 1970s. “With Osborne it was obvious and he has been wanting to go [to Motocross of Nations] for years,” DeCoster said. “Every year he has asked me, I have had to turn him down. This year he has earned it. Seely and Covington’s results have picked up and I think it’s a good time for them. All three riders really want to do it and their teams give them really good support.” The U.S. team has won the Motocross of Nations 22 times, remaining the all-time leader in FIM Motocross of Nations overall team victories and claiming all of those wins under the direction of DeCoster.

District 6. Some members have come and gone over the years but many I have known since the very beginning. It seems however that no matter who is there, they always give their best efforts when they host events and to cater to not only their members but to all that pass through their gates. I believe that no matter how long I continue to The pagoda Motorcycle Club is located near Birdsboro, PA in Berks attend events there that I have developed friendships that will last a County. Since 1945 they have established a reputation as one of the lifetime. premier motorcycle organizations in Pennsylvania. Their members take great pride in their history, in the friendships they develop and in As I mentioned they are always open to new members so maybe if you’re looking for a place to get in some more riding time, looking to the club events and activities that they host at their facility. make some new friends or just want to contribute back to the sport that you should check them out. I would also recommend that if you Pagoda has a dedicated mini track racing program at their facility. like to ride motorcycles that you attend one of their upcoming events this fall.
Birdsboro, Pa - www.pagodamc.org
To round out their 2017 season they have a motocross race on September 9-10 billed as their Vet Appreciation Day then on October 7-8 they will be hosting their Annual Big Bucks Pro Am Motocross race. The weekend after that the quads make their way to Pagoda and there is also a T Bolt USA Pitbike race that weekend. The last event of the year is something a little different than your probably used to but I would tell you that if you have no plans on Saturday November 4th that you head out to the track for their Fall Junk Car Race. What a hoot – basic premise, ton’s of cars go out and hit the circle track and the last man moving is the winner. Over the years, volunteer efforts from the dedicated Pagoda members and their families have resulted in outstanding clubhouse facilities, entertaining events, and competitive racing. At Pagoda you can find a host of activities including motocross and supercross racing, street bike poker runs, pool matches, picnics, and junk car races. As well as kiddie events featuring Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny plus they are one of the only facilities locally that offers a separate mini track and classes for kids to get started in the sport. Their classes are offered for just about any mini cycle made and it’s a great way for kids to get a taste for competition and sportsmanship. They also work with the community and have offered their grounds use for non profit organizations and the like.
Two classes are offered and trust me, sparks will fly, metal will dent and a great time will be had by all. It’s a great way to end out the season at a great facility that’s full of people that would love to meet you. Again I recommend that you get on their website, hit an event, stop by and say hi. But whatever you do, make sure you check out this long-standing club in the heart of AMA District 6 and please tell them that Brapp Mag sent you. B
Pagoda is more however than just a place to go race or ride. One of the things that makes them unique is that they operate as a motorcycle club. They are a family oriented club consisting of road, off-road, competition and social members. Their annual events are supported 100% by volunteer member efforts.
They hold several motocross races and practice days each year. Twice a year Pagoda offers up junk car racing on their infield.
They have a pavilion with clubhouse and offer many types of events. This gives people a chance to contribute back to the sport and it offers their members opportunities to ride outside of events and make new friends with like interests. They are always open to new membership and details on what’s offered and required by members can be found on their website. Personally I can tell you that I have been attending events at this facility for close to 15 years now. I have made many friends there that have contributed greatly to the sport of motorcycling here in AMA BRAPP MAGAZINE September 2017

RIDE REVIEW
CHECK OUT VELOCITY CYCLES FOR ALL YOUR HONDA, BMW AND GENUINE SCOOTER NEEDS!
The Honda Rebel 500
Courtesy of Velocity Cycles Mechanicsburg, Pa By Jim Bull
The Honda Rebel 500 is available at Velocity Cycles. Well this month I got my wish – yes that ride on Honda’s Street Retro the Rebel 500. If you read last months article we tested the 300cc series of bikes from Honda. The 500’s like the 300’s offer different model configurations based on your riding style and preference only with a larger powerplant. The last time the staff at Velocity Cycles put me out on the CB300 F or, standard as I like to say. That bike shares the same geometry as its cousin the R series but the Rebel understand is a different animal all its own. Honda also offers an Adventure model in this 500 series but that’s a story for a different day. I started out working in this industry way back in the early 1980’s at a Honda dealership and stayed there for 10 years. During that time Honda introduced the CMX250 or what would become known as the Honda Rebel. I’m not going to tell you what that bike retailed for but let me say this. We sold them by the tractor trailer loads. Honda hit the mark way back then, and after my ride last month I’m here to tell you that they did it again. Below find some commentary from Hondas website. THE ALL-NEW 2017 REBEL 500 YOU DON’T BUY THIS BIKE. YOU MAKE IT YOURS. The Rebel 500 is a true triple threat: part impressive performance, part minimalist good looks and completely fun to ride. The first thing you’ll notice is its subtle, blacked-out looks. From the compact frame to its lowslung seat, it’s just cool. Once you get on, you’ll know immediately that this bike was meant to be ridden, thanks to an impressive lean angle, and a 471cc parallel-twin engine tuned for middle and upper-rpms. Ride it stock. Trick it out. Either way, this bike just feels right.
I’d have to concur with everything Honda says above. When you swing your leg over this half liter cruiser you can just begin to feel the cool creep through your body. The bike looks great, sits low to the ground and has a just right riding geometry.
ENGINE
Pulling out onto the highway I could immediately notice the difference in power and torque over the 300 series bikes. As I headed out of Mechanicsburg and up into the foothills I was even more impressed as this cruiser handled the twisty roads very nicely. I wasn’t sure what to expect given the cruiser style frame geometry and different tire and wheel configurations but this half pint cruiser got the job done. It was also a breeze to ride as I worked my way down into the city traffic of Carlisle and made my way back to the shop. This bike hits the mark. It looks great, is super lightweight and easy to balance. It has nice big disc brakes, electronic fuel injection, a user-friendly gauge package and best of all – it is highly customizable. Both Honda and the aftermarket companies have set their sights on how much we crazy Americans love to make things are own. If you’re looking for a great bike to get out and cruise I would definitely give this ride a look. Whether you’re an entry level rider looking for your first bike or an experienced veteran looking for a fun and versatile machine. The Honda rebel just might be your best pick. If you live in central PA, I would give Velocity Cycles a yell and please tell them that BrappMag sent you. You can check them out online for all your BMW, Honda and Genuine Scooter needs at:

PROPER VS. IMPROPER RIDING TECHNIQUE WITH SEAN KOELLER & FINALMOTO MX TRAINING
Proper riding technique is the easiest way to get faster and be safer on a dirtbike. Changing the angles of the way you sit, stand, position your hands, and angle your feet can all lead to more control and better lap times. Whether you’re racing motocross or trail ride for fun the basics go a long way to a better ride. In this article we will cover Upper body positioning focusing on the hands, shoulders, and chest and how little changes can make big improvements! Starting at the handlebars, most riders have a tendency to grip too much with their entire hand, forgetting about having fingers on the levers and death-gripping their poor motorcycle. The problem with a full hand grip is that it usually locks the wrists and elbows, making it very difficult to move the bike underneath you without changing your body positioning to compensate for the lack of movement. Also having a straight full hand grip typically doesn’t give you leverage at the wrist because there is a bend in them and it will also lock your elbows at your side, these acute angles allow for little range of movement and a rougher ride. To correct this common problem, turn your hands inward on a slight angle, this will straighten the wrists, widen the angle in your elbows and allow your grip to loosen up, and move the bike easier.
IMPROPER TECHNIQUE
On top of moving the bike easier, turning your hands will also roll your shoulders forward and will help your riding posture all while bringing your chest closer to the bars. Rolling your shoulders forward and bringing your chest closer and putting more weight on the front wheel will help you accelerate smoother and harder by keeping you further forward on the seat. Not only will it help under acceleration but under braking you will be able to hold yourself more steadily and weighting the front wheel more will allow the front wheel to bite better in corners and stay lower in ruts. A few simple adjustments to your upper body positioning can go a long way helping your riding. Look for more riding tips and tricks each month in BRAPP Magazine, next month we will cover lower body position and hip movement! These riding tips are brought to you by FinalMoto MX Training, operated by Sean Koeller, AMA Pro License holder and AA Offroad racer. It is a huge accomplishment just to make it there. Below find some top finishers this year from our region and their take on the week. I got 2nd in the first moto and 4th in the second moto. I thought about my lines for my last race and I tried not to fall at all. I rode my fastest and I won! I got first overall! From Danny, Landons father: Landon was protested after a three hour debate and bike tear down and he came out on top winning the championship on a totally bone stock bike. We just wanted to give you a little insight on how his title day went down. Landon truly deserved this for his hard work and dedication. Cheating never came to mind for us. He used his smarts and skill for this one! He went 2-4-1 to win the overall.

“This year at Loretta’s I had a fun time with all my friends playing in the creek, pool and riding bicycles and scooters. I got off to a rough start early in the week but was able to get it together and get on the podium. I’d like to thank my Mom & Dad, KTM Orange Brigade, all their sponsors for helping me during the year and everyone else that helps along the way. I can’t wait to race Baja Brawl and Mini O’s. Thank you everyone Luke Fauser @Luke462”
“This year at Lorettas I learned about adversity and perseverance. I had a bad moto in each of my classes, which could have put me out of contention. However I shook off the bad motos and was able to finish strong in the end. I finished 14th in the 65cc (7-11) unlimited and placed second in the final moto of the 65cc (7-9) limited for a 6th overall. I would like to thank my parents and sponsors, JWTF, SGB Racing and Bell helmets, for all of their support.

I still had a great time with great friends. I got to see some guys that I used to race nationals with in the late Eighties!!

Round 7 for SRT AMA East Harescramble By Kenny Held Photos Dan Morton
One of the most popular runs of the year! Come find out why! Valley Forge Trail Riders & High Mountain Dirt Riders present the
42nd MoonShine enduro
Rain or Shine!
August 5-6, 2017 - Battle Creek, MI. Round 7 for SRT AMA East HS was hosted by D-14 at the Battle Creek Motorcycle Club. Scheduling conflicts in 2016 prevented this venue and it was certainly missed. We couldn’t wait to head back to the land of Loamy Dirt. The weather was perfect and the soil was pristine. Two days of rain Just prior to the event made for perfect conditions. The main event saw 200 plus local and visiting talent. All eyes were on points leader SRT’s “Wild” Wally Palmer and last years #1 pilot Bromley Beta Kyle McDonal. The track layout provided a grand viewing of about 1.5 miles of MX and 7 miles of tight technical trail. 12 Pro riders lined up to do battle for 3 hours. When the flag dropped it was Parts Unlimited KTM pilot Corey Parlin with the hole shot who led the 1st lap with Palmer and local rider Witkowski giving chase. McDonal was keeping them honest in 4th. The four would begin to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. Midway through Parlin would drop to 3rd and KTM Mike Witkowski would pass to take over the lead. Witkowski’s lead would stick to the end giving KTM a 1, 2, 3 sweep. McDonal stayed the course for 4th keeping him in the points battle. The C event was run concurrently with the main event however they were scored separately. It was actually pretty cool how the club did this. Two chutes with two separate scoring systems. New to D14 is the Schoolboy Class. It was quite apparent after the 1st lap that these lanky but conditioned youth were gonna do some damage. They were averaging 24 minute lap times and starting on row 13. After the two hour mark it was the “Beast from the East” Mike Beeler Jr” taking the OA. 2nd place was Logan Densmore and 3rd Zach Dubois. In the Youth main all eyes were upon visiting participants Mike Beeler and “Mad Max” Fernandez. Both from the East coast and both battling in separate classes but this is just for bragging rights. The two have been at it for 7 years. Both good friends off and on the track. Unfortunately, on this day Max would call it quits on the 3rd lap while leading with a blown crank. Beeler, with a vast lead put it on cruise control to the checkers. 2nd and 3rd place would go to Team Perfect Storm members Ricky Anewalt Jr and Kenneth Held Jr. In the Pee Wee 50’s it was Bromley KTM mounted Ryder Sigety from NJ with the early lead against the local favorites. Sigety would hold his position to the end putting him in the AMA East points lead. B

Tri County Harescramble Rd # 1 ECEA Series

Jaden wouldn’t be the only Palmer winning on this day either. Younger brother Landon who’s been hard at it got his first win ever today racing in the (4-6) 50cc Jr./LC division, looks like maybe he’s been studying his big brothers techniques.
Tri County Sportsmen were excellent hosts for the event
The youth division gave us a great race too with a big battle for first between Reece Bruner, Max Fernandez and Michael Beeler with Jeffrey Macknik throwing a wheel in now and then to keep them all honest. In the end it would be Beeler with the win and about a 20 second advantage.
It was a big weekend to kick off the 2016 ECEA Harescramble Series sponsored by MSR. Over 700 entries came out to race the loose sand at Port Elizabeth. The pits were slippery and the trails fast as the series debuted on a bright sunny weekend in Mid April.
Sunday brought over 500 entries to the National at Tri County. The Lafferty boys were at it again racing against some of the best riders the east coast has to offer. Ryder and Michael must have been locked wheel to wheel as not more than 3 seconds separated them at any point in the race. If you’ve never seen these two go through the woods you definitely owe it to your-
Brapp Mag was only in attendance on the youth day but what a blast we had. Young Jaden Palmer would take the overall wins in both the Pee Wee and Juniors division on this day. This kid is just on fire winning just about everywhere he goes.

PSALM 23 - THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD Yes it’s one of the most quoted scriptures in the bible, most believers know it by heart. It’s one of the first they teach you as a child in Sunday school. I’d say even many non – believers of Christ will turn to it in times of sorrow and need. So what is so powerful about these 119 words written by King David, one of the most powerful men in the known world over 1000’s of years ago that draws people in, even to this day?

NO PETS - NO DOGS - Beer Limit one 6-pack - 5252 Hillclimb Rd. Spring Grove, pa 17362 A PSALM OF DAVID. 1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul, He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. I’d like to stop here and ask you to re-read and think about the words above. Has there ever been a time in your life when any of this would apply to any situation you’ve encountered? Or that it maybe could apply to or improve a current situation. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. The words above apply to a time when we will move on from this earth. Don’t we always believe when a loved one passes that they have gone to a better place? Do we really know for sure, do you know where your soul will go after death and if not, would you like to know the truth? 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever. These last verses answer the question I asked from above. That is, if you know the Lord and believe that Jesus was sent to pay the price for all our sins you will be saved. Can anyone of you reading these words get excited about any of this? I’ll be honest with you, I’ve heard and read these verses many times in my life but it was just recently that they really hit home. That’s one of the real beauties about walking with God, he will always wait on you until you are ready. It doesn’t matter who you are, what you’ve done or what you’ve had to endure in your life. Jesus is always there just waiting for your call. I’m not sure he’ll get your text but just know that all you have to do is yell out and he will be there. B

THE HONDA SIDE BY SIDES PIONEER 500 FULL-SIZED FEATURES IN A FUN-SIZED PACKAGE. Choosing the right tool is the job half done and it can make whatever you’re trying to do a lot more fun. For thousands of side-by-side owners, the right tool for the job is a Honda Pioneer 500. It’s big enough to seat two easily, but at just 50 inches wide, it can fit where bigger side-by-sides can’t, letting you explore trails with width restrictions. That means it also fits into a fullsized pickup’s bed easily. But the Pioneer 500 still offers plenty of power, and is loaded with features, including for 2017, a new automatic transmission with AT/MT modes. And then there are the best features of all: Honda quality and dependability. Read more at https://powersports.honda.com/pioneer/500/home. aspx#cPF74DjXMKVLORyP.99 PIONEER 700 THE MULTITOOL OF THE SIDE-BY-SIDE WORLD. If you were stuck on one of those desert-island reality TV shows, what would you take with you? There’s no perfect choice, but a folding multitool or a Swiss pocket knife would probably be a great start. Now, think of the world of side-by-sides. Which one most closely approximates a premium multitool: versatile, well-built, something you can count on in a wide variety of situations? The answer: a Honda Pioneer 700. Displacement and size-wise, it sits right in the middle of our Pioneer lineup, which makes it not too big and not too small. You can configure it to carry two or four people, and can further refine it with trim packages and other features. The overall size and Honda refinement means it handles like a dream—a claim few other side-by-sides can make. And best of all, the Pioneer 700s are comfortable, a joy to drive in conditions that would wear you out on another side-by-side. Read more at https://powersports.honda.com/pioneer/500/home. aspx#cPF74DjXMKVLORyP.99 1000 PIONEER DON’T SETTLE FOR ANYTHING BUT THE BEST. All side-by-sides face the same challenges, but it’s how they solve them that sets Honda’s Pioneers apart. Smart technology. Superior materials. Refined engineering. And something nobody else can match: Honda’s well-earned and world-famous reputation for reliability and overall quality. And the farther you go or the harder you work, the more that means. This year’s Honda Pioneer 1000 lineup is a perfect example. These great side-by-sides got it right the first time in terms of comfort, handling, hauling, and user-friendly features. Available in both three- and five-seat versions, in addition to their innovative features, from our flagship Pioneer 1000-5 Limited Edition right through our line to the Pioneer 1000, you can count on a Honda, year after year, mile after mile, adventure after adventure Read more at https://powersports.honda.com/pioneer/500/home. aspx#cPF74DjXMKVLORyP.99 CONTACT YOUR LOCAL HONDA DEALER AND TELL THEM BRAPPMAG SENT YOU!!
