e are a multi-racial and multi-ethnic community that co-exists in peace and harmony. You don’t need to go far to witness this in motion, just look at Sabah. We boast the most ethnicities living together in the whole of Malaysia. It isn’t just the numbers; we’re all able to live together harmoniously. We’ve also been blessed with the ecological richness of nature that exists in our state. These are attributes that attract people to live in Sabah. This month, we’ll be featuring fellow Malaysians from across the sea to tell their stories, happily calling Sabah their home.

Tai Yong Seng Hailing from Penang, Tai Yong Seng has been living in Sabah for more than 6 years now. He came here after receiving an offer to study at University Malaysia Sabah, even though it was his third choice. He felt like it was his destiny to live here, because since setting foot in Sabah, he then got to experience first-hand the unity and harmony of Sabahans. Today, Tai Yong Seng sells Point of Sales systems to local entrepreneurs, helping them to build and optimize their business operations. He loves spending his spare time exploring the picturesque beaches of Sabah with his girlfriend. Their favourite spots are Tanjung Aru beach and Nexus Karambunai. Tai Yong Seng has always loved his time here. He’s been planning to invite his parents to stay here as well.

Chin Ee Kai Having spent 4 years in Sabah and working as a control engineer for Shell, Chin Ee Kai really adores food, especially anything local. This Penangite co-founded Laundroluxe after just a year of living here. Ee Kai relocated to Kota Kinabalu for work, and immediately fell hard in love with everything that Sabah has to offer. Meeting the most delightful people of Sabah and experiencing the incredible pinkish sunset are definitely moments he will never forget. As co-founder of Laundroluxe, Ee Kai spends his free time searching and feasting on Sabah’s luscious delicacies. If he ever leaves Sabah, he will definitely miss the idyllic islands, the scrumptious seafood, and mostly the bond and friendships he has fostered over the years.

Violet Velu Six years ago, Violet Velu came to Sabah to study for her Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Sciences at University Malaysia Sabah. She was born in Kedah but grew to love Sabah and the people here. For her, living in Sabah has been an amazing experience and she learnt to be independent since she lives alone and far away from family. In her spare time, Violet enjoys practicing muay thai. Her best moment so far is participating in her first muay thai match. The prep for the fight has really pushed and trained her mentally and physically. It was a great way to fight back the negative forces that the MCO has brought. She definitely loves the locals here and will miss the amazing friends she’s met along the way. In her own words, “they’re the closest things to family I have here.” Violet truly appreciates everyone she has met and the experiences she had over the years, and she encourages more people to experience The Land Below The Wind.

Cheah Lee Sun Cheah Lee Sun is another Penangite who has proudly called Sabah her home. As Sabah’s Hub Head for OYO Rooms Hospitality, Lee Sun has been living in Sabah for more than a year now. Her most memorable and cherished moments here thus far is having a go at outdoor activities for the first time. She has already been out on scuba diving and river cruising adventures with friends. Lee Sun loves the hospitality and friendliness of the locals. According to her, if she ever leaves this state, she will miss having the abundance of seafood and especially saying ‘bah’ like a true local. In her spare time, she thrives for new adventures and exploring around Sabah, searching for uncharted places, and tasting different delicacies. You could say she’s done a lot since she first came here and is planning for more adventures in the future.

abah’s population is made up of diverse cultures and languages, all living together in harmony. So, it’s no surprise many budding musicians from different walks of life are eager to show the world what they can do, not to mention parts of their culture too. This time, we’re featuring Pol Deckson with his latest single, Au Oku Momudut Dika, which translates to “I’m Not Lying To You”. Paul Deckson Lazarus, A.K.A Pol Deckson, began focusing on his singing career after successfully producing his solo debut song. The 33-year old Penampang native’s passion for music doesn’t just stop at producing songs for his audience. Pol aims to drive the local music scene forward. With local youths in mind, he feels it’s time to take the opportunity to venture into the Sabahan music industry and propel it forward.

it himself. He was inspired by his personal experience in a past relationship. It details the feelings and emotions he felt throughout the ordeal through the perspective of Pol’s former partner. Apart from the song, the music video is charming as well, giving a visual portrayal of the song. Even if you don’t understand the language, you can easily sing your heart out along with the lyrics on screen. Speaking of the language, the song was written in Pol’s native tongue of Dusun. For his debut, he wanted to preserve the language and showcase the Kadazan Dusun Murut culture to his audience. This is very important for him, especially with the rapid social development in our society.

“Never Give Up”. Pol holds this phrase close to his heart. He believes we should not easily give up a dream but instead try to pursue it the best we can. His perseverance and hard work paid Au Oku Momudut Dika was released on August 9, 2020 and off. He successfully took his first step into the music industry with was completed in 3 months with Pol writing and composing the help of Dups Production, a talent scouting agency based in Penampang. Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra

W

hen the first Samsung Galaxy Note came out, consumers questioned the practicality of a big smartphone and criticized the S-Pen as a gimmick. However, 11 iterations later, we can’t wait to see what Samsung has got up their sleeves to wow us. Well, the wait is over because the Note20 Ultra is here. The Galaxy Note20 Ultra comes in 3 sleek colours. Personally, I like the look of the Mystic Black, but the Mystic Bronze has a premium look to it. The screen is a 6.9 inch curved AMOLED display with a 120hz refresh rate, giving you rich colours and smooth animations when viewing content. Under the screen, they’ve implemented an in-screen fingerprint scanner too. Connectivity wise, it’s chipset supports 5G connectivity, future proofing it when 5G becomes stable. Speaking of which, the phone is powered by the Snapdragon 865+, the latest chipset in Qualcomm’s lineup. With 12 gigabytes (gb) of RAM and 256gb of memory, you can multitask better and smoother, while storing more personal items and memories on one device. If somehow 256gb isn’t enough, you can also expand the memory up to 1 terabyte using an SD card. The Note20 Ultra can also be turned into a mini computer when you plug it into a monitor. Combined with the helpful S-Pen, this is truly a jack of all trades of a device if you’re looking to travel light. Cameras. The Note20 Ultra has 4 of them including the 10-megapixel one in the front. At the back, you’ll find 3 lenses

for the main 108-megapixel sensor, 12-megapixel ultra wide, and another 12-megapixel telephoto. Now you won’t have to worry about missing any details, both either zoomed in or out. It’s the perfect setup for any type of photography. Now, all the powerful specs won’t be useful if you can’t use it for long. With the 4500 mAh battery, Samsung claims it’ll last you the whole day. Even if you need to reach for the 25w charger, plugging it in for 30 minutes will charge up 50% of the battery. It can also act as a wireless charger with Wireless PowerShare for your friends who are in need. The Samsung Note20 Ultra starts at RM5199. Pricey? Yes, but it’s the price you pay for a very premium smartphone. A powerful smartphone that can do everything at that. At the end of the day, beauty lies at the eyes of the beholder, only you can decide whether it’s worth it or not.

to experience the calm forest, try fresh honey from the hives of stingless bees, and also visit two waterfalls. Abseil down one of them and feel the cool and clean water on your skin. Once you’ve reached the top, it’s nothing but an amazing scenery.

Located an hour away from Kota Kinabalu, you won’t need to worry about a long journey to get there. The local community that manages the site offers a few packages for visitors to choose from. From a hike up the Dapako Hill, to a campsite made available for everyone, you have quite a variety of activities to choose from.

Other than hiking, you can also swim in the clear waters of the Tuaran river or go rafting in it. The deepest point of the river is approximately 16 feet. If you do decide to camp, the campsite is literally beside the river. During our visit there, the air and atmosphere was very cool. Other activities that you can do are fish feeding and swinging across the river during the ‘flying fox’ activity.

Once you’ve arrived, your main destination is right across the Tuaran River, so you’ll need to cross the suspension bridge. On your way across, you’re greeted by the harmony of gongs beating to welcome you. You’re also welcomed with freshly brewed coffee with pandan served by the friendly locals. When you’ve settled down, you can then start the fun activities from your selected package. As mentioned above, the main attraction of the Dapako Hill is, well, obviously Dapako Hill itself. Patriotism and Our environment

M

alaysia Day is just around the corner and the patriotic spirit is in the air. This year, we’ll be celebrating the 57th anniversary of the formation of our country. However, this year will be a tad different when it comes to the celebrations. Due to the circumstances, there’ll be no parades or big festivities held. This is not an excuse not to show support and patriotism for our country. Aside from sticking flags on cars and waving them around, there are things we should do in regards to our environment. First, what do you do with the flags after the day? Do you store them for next year or do you dispose of them immediately? It’s more environmentally friendly to reuse them, but if you do need to dispose of them for some reason, make sure you do it properly. Also, don’t simply throw them on the sidewalk. You’re not only being a litterbug, but it’s also unpatriotic. So, think about that! That being said, patriotism isn’t only about respecting our flag, leaders, and those who sacrificed for our country. It’s also about respecting the environment we live in, what we call home. If we litter and don’t take care of it, then it’s sad to say that we are unpatriotic and not respecting our country. It’s also about learning from the past. Knowing and understanding the nation’s accomplishments, along with our mistakes, helps ensure we learn from them and improve for the future. The same approach can be made with our environment. We’ve all

by Noel Jinguli Images | Unsplash 21

had lapses in judgement and for the most part, that’s okay. What matters now is we learn from it and try our best not to repeat them. We can determine what we can do better now and in the future. So to recap, patriotism isn’t only about respecting our country, the flag, and the people who made it what it is today. It’s also about taking care of our environment, our home. Patriotism is also about learning and understanding history, just as it’s important to learn from our own mistakes and achievements. Patriotism is more than just the emotions and feelings we have, it’s also the actions we take to better the nation.

DR SYLVIA OF PHI DENTAL: FOR A BRIGHTER & SHINIER FUTURE

on’t you get slightly jealous seeing the “piano-key” smiles from influencers or celebrities alike? Ever see ads that show instant solutions on social media to get that perfect shiny smile? Will it last? In this issue we paid a visit to Phi Dental, a professional dental team that provides general dental care in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah to patients locally and regionally. Founded back in 2018, we are very fortunate to meet the face behind Phi Dental; Dr Sylvia, and have her share with us her vision being in the dental industry. Even though she was born and raised in Johor, she is very much a Sabahan at heart. She received her Bachelor of Dental Surgery from Aimst University, Kedah and she obtained her Fellowship from the Royal College

of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2016. Her 1st offer letter placed her in Sabah back in 2013 and she joined MERCY Malaysia as a volunteer which is an experience that opened her eyes to many wonders in Sabah and she did not look back ever since. Phi Dental is located in Suria Sabah and Dr Sylvia wanted to make Phi Dental not only a place for treatment, but also prevention and as an education center. She has dealt majorly with braces and uneven teeth in young adults and this made her wonder if the problem could be avoided if it was tackled at an early age instead. Dr Sylvia joined IAOM (International Association of Orofacial Myology) and got trained on how to use the oral muscle correctly as early as the breastfeeding stage and she believed that malocclusion or crooked teeth could be prevented. After getting pregnant with her 1st child, she decided to go for a breastfeeding consultant training under the National Lactation Center (NLC). According to her, to breastfeed a baby is the 1st step to a healthy facial and dental development. Hence, if you do it correctly from the beginning, it will lead to a series of right developments. Dr Sylvia is currently working with NLC to certify Phi Dental as the 1st breastfeeding friendly dental clinic in Sabah. Other than that, Phi Dental also offers a non-drill solution for kids who suffers from dental phobia and an early check up is important in treating the problem.

by Iffah Hazirah Images | Srap 23

Married to a Sabahan, she recently had her very 1st child and being a mom opened her eyes to seeing things in a different perspective. She strongly believes that breastfeeding brings so many benefits not only on the nutritional side but the action of feeding itself brings miracles. Apart from that, Phi Dental is also working closely with the Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) team where

they diagnose problems such as sleep apnea in adults, snoring and teeth grinding while sleeping. Dr Sylvia also stresses the importance of breathing correctly through your nose instead of your mouth which could result in preventing problems such as snoring, and improving your posture. For example, during mealtime, a child should be encouraged to sit at a table properly as this could result in good posture, preventing a bloated stomach and indigestion. Phi Dental also wanted to incorporate values into people’s daily lives and encourage a healthy lifestyle through the things you do with your eyes, nose and throat and to be the frontline in detecting the initial problem and changing your habit to bring you a better lifestyle. When asked whether she will still be here in Sabah 5 years later, she answered yes without hesitation. She agreed that Sabah is a great place to raise her kid and she planned for Phi Dental to bring their services and explore smaller towns and rural areas in the future. Despite having a lot of patients further away and having difficulties to drop by her clinic, she made use of social media to educate and answer questions on dental care from home. Phi Dental is also looking into having their own CSR

(Corporate Social Responsibility) program and bring not only their dental services to rural areas, but also to educate parents on the importance of breastfeeding and breathing correctly. Helping the community is a priority in Phi Dental. Due to her never ending effort to help the people in need in Sabah, she is the first non-sabahan to be elected by the Malaysian Dental Council to represent Sabah dentists until 2022. Dr Sylvia enjoys dancing especially tango, joined beach cleaning and she admits that being in Sabah really fulfilled the ideal life that she dreamed of having. She practiced her career here with passion and she is constantly doing what she loves. She also adores the freedom of practicing arts in Sabah and believes in supporting local artists and their works which could clearly be seen through the decor in Phi Dental. Many things are irreplaceable to her in Sabah; the people, the art and last but not least, a healthy place to raise a family.

FUN FACTS: The name ‘Phi’ Dental came from the divine proportion or golden ratio in the art of Da Vinci. 24

COOL NATIONAL CARS

E

ver since Proton introduced the Saga, Malaysia’s first national car in 1985, Malaysians had something to be proud of when driving on the road. Not all countries are fortunate enough to produce their own car brand. Although it hasn’t always been sunshine and butterflies, we have seen some really cool cars make their way out of the factory floor and onto the national stage. The Proton Arena, or Jumbuck in countries like Australia and the United Kingdom, was a unique choice of body style introduced by Proton. The 2-door utility small pickup truck, or the “ute” as the Aussies call them, wasn’t particularly popular in Malaysia. However, over the years, the Arena has become a cult classic and has become quite desirable in Malaysia. Unsurprisingly, they were really popular in Australia for their practicality. Also, because it shares the same front end as the Wira, which is based on the Mitsubishi Lancer, you can put a body kit on it to make it look like a Lancer Evolution pickup. Pretty neat. The next car in this list is the Proton Putra, a 2-door coupe version of the Wira. Basically, it’s almost a direct rebadge of the fourth generation Lancer. Proton commissioned a British racing outfit, Prodrive, to develop a rally version of the Putra to compete in the World Rally Championship (WRC) in 1997. Prodrive beefed up the suspension, converted it to a four-wheel

drive, and actually increased the horsepower to around 300bhp (brake horsepower). Unfortunately, the project came to a stop, so the car wasn’t homologated and wasn’t made available for the public. Let’s talk about a car you can currently buy new off the showroom floor, the Proton Iriz. Do you know there’s also a rally version developed by British rally team, Mellors Elliot Motorsport (MEM). They call it the Iriz R5 and people didn’t expect this small compact to rip through dirt patches like the rally beast it is. If you’re willing to spend your money, you can have your own Iriz R5 too. I personally think it’ll be well worth the money as MEM has a good track record with Malaysian cars on the rally stage since the time of Karamjit Singh, Malaysia’s champion rally driver. We have a lot to be proud of with our national cars. They have very high potential to capture the hearts of international drivers and conquer the world of motorsports. So whenever you see our national cars on the road, don’t just ignore them, be proud of what it has achieved and what it can achieve.

Our Cells make Our Tissue Our Tissue make Our Organs Our Organs make Our Systems Our Systems make Our Entire Body

Cells have many functions in the body including prevention from DNA damage and energy production. We naturally accumulate DNA damage with age, poor diet and environmental exposure to toxins. DNA damage can impact on energy production and lead to early cell death, causing inflammation and chronic disease.

These tiny individual life-forming structures, are what makes us who we are and most importantly, how we are. By that we mean, in health, constantly communicating with each other and responding to their environment - our cells dictate how we feel, therefore it’s important that we look after them as the fundamental building blocks of life. If you concentrate in your mind’s eye, on a single cell - as the foundation to your health. Then if you can imagine building up the strength of this single cell it will have a major positive impact on your groups of cells that make up your tissues, organs and the rest of your body. You essentially are building on your health from within, through that single cell. The importance of having healthy, nourished cells ensures they can work efficiently. If they can’t, the functioning of tissues and

Tens of millions of new cells are made daily in the body to replace old and damaged cells. Thankfully, there are a few ways you can improve your health at the cellular level like getting better sleep, eat food that lower inflammation, avoid exposure to toxicity or even with the aid of a supplement like Redox Signaling Molecules that has been scientifically tested and shown to signal the activation of genetic pathways or affect genes that improve immune system health, help maintain a healthy inflammatory response, help maintain cardiovascular health and support arterial elasticity, improve gut health and digestive enzyme production and modulate hormone balance to support vitality and wellness.

PRP THERAPY FOR HAIR LOSS

P

RP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy for hair loss is a three-step medical treatment in which a person’s blood is drawn, processed, and then injected into the scalp.

Step 1 Your blood is drawn — typically from your arm — and put into a centrifuge (a machine that spins rapidly to separate fluids of different densities).

Some in the medical community think that PRP injections trigger natural hair growth and maintain it by increasing blood supply to the hair follicle and increasing the thickness of the hair shaft. Sometimes this approach is combined with other hair loss procedures or medications.

Step 2 After about 10 minutes in the centrifuge, your blood will have separated into in three layers: • Platelet-poor plasma • Platelet-rich plasma • Red blood cells

There hasn’t been enough research to prove if PRP is an effective hair loss treatment. However, PRP therapy has been in use since the 1980s. It’s been used for problems such as healing injured tendons, ligaments, and muscles. PRP Therapy Process PRP therapy is a three-step process. recognising and fixing crooked teeth

F

ull grown adults have 32 teeth that need to be aligned to function well and give a pleasing aesthetic for the face and teeth. Crooked teeth is when the misalignment of the teeth have developed into an overbite, underbite, spacing, or crowding situation. Unfortunately, crooked teeth do affect our general health including our breathing and posture. Conventional belief suggests our genetics are related to the development of crooked teeth. However, according to Dr. Sylvia Lim of Phi Dental, it’s actually related to how our jaws function, leading to the formation of crooked teeth. Using our facial muscles correctly and placing our tongue at the correct place can prevent it from developing. The 3 correct positions for our muscles are: 1. Mouth and lips sealed all the time. 2. Breathing through the nose. 3. Tongue is always on the palete, roof of the mouth. These positions of the muscles help set the teeth in the most ideal position. The habits of children also lead to the formation of crooked teeth. Breastfeeding children have more ideal teeth alignment compared to those who are bottle fed. Suckling on the mother’s breast encourages forward growth of the facial bone by the constant positioning of the tongue on the palete. It’s the opposite case when it comes to the firm artificial teats of nursing bottles and pacifiers.

There are a few ways we can prevent or fix crooked teeth and it’s all based on the age group. Infants are encouraged to be breast fed as mentioned above. Toddlers who have developed baby teeth are recommended to have fibrous and chewable diets. For example, it’s best to choose baby-led weaning instead of traditional weaning methods to promote the function of the jaw muscles. For children with developed adult teeth, myo-facial training with myo-dentists is recommended. Along with wearing myodevices, it helps to achieve the ideal facial form of the child. Lastly, to fix crooked teeth in adults, the need to use orthodontics such as braces or invisible braces will be helpful. However, in some severe cases, these methods will need to be combined with surgery to be effective. At the end of the day, function always leads to form. Using our muscles correctly is very important. Dr. Sylvia reminds parents that prevention is better than curing, so there’s no need to wait for the growth of permanent teeth.

MALAYSIA DAY

2

020 marks the 57th year in which we celebrate Malaysia Day. This year is quite different with the pandemic going on. We actually have chosen the theme of “Malaysia Prihatin” in conjunction with the celebration of both Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day. On the 31st of August 1957, Malaya achieved its independence. We were finally no longer under the control of the British, Japanese or Portuguese. We were on our own. Soon after, on the 16th of September 1963, we became known as Malaysia when Malaya and North Borneo united. This year however we won’t be able to celebrate grandly. Due to the pandemic and RMCO, we are obliged to follow social distancing rules. As well as SOP rules when dining outside. Normally when there is a big celebration such as Merdeka and Malaysia Day, we would all be out celebrating with friends and family till midnight. Or better yet, from midnight! Sadly all that isn’t possible this year. We would simply have to find another way to celebrate. Virtually seems to be our only solution now. Gathering in large groups would be problematic. After all these years, Malaysia has always had its ups and downs. But every Malaysian is always proud to announce that they are in fact Malaysian. We love supporting our people

whenever something great happens or when local artists appear internationally. As long as there is even the slightest bit of representation, we feel proud because not many people recognise Malaysia. So it is definitely an honour when people finally do! Even more so recently. The little cameo of Bella Rahim in the film “Train To Busan: Peninsula” surely surprised Malaysians in a good way! Anyway, I know that as Malaysians, we will always support each other no matter what. Many talents are hidden within our people. We just need a chance to shine! Also, has anyone noticed that this year is the 63rd year of Merdeka and the 57th year of our formation? Merdeka mirrors the year we became Malaysia, while Malaysia Day mirrors the year we achieved independence.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

A

rtificial Intelligence (AI), or machine learning, is a type of software that makes it possible for machines to learn from its own experiences, or adjust itself from new information or inputs. Most importantly, it enables machines to complete human-like tasks that they are programmed to do. These machines are trained to help us complete specific tasks by retaining and processing large amounts of information, and recognizing patterns in said information. They are being used in health care, retail sectors, banking, and manufacturing. AI capabilities are of high demand to these industries for question answering systems, patent searches, risk notification, and medical researches. From chess-playing computers to self-driving cars, these are just a few examples of AI in our world. One of the cooler and cuter examples is a small robot called Vector made by Anki. With Alexa built-in to it, it helps handle day-to-day tasks like scheduling appointments, answering questions, and providing important information you need to start the day. Apart from that, it’s also a fun companion to have around the house or room as you can play games with it.

35

In movies though, AI have somewhat of a bad reputation. Just look at movies like The Terminator or War Games, AI are portrayed as the antagonist trying to kill the protagonist or even destroy the world. It’s safe to say that the AI we have today aren’t as aggressive as the ones in the movies. So you won’t have to worry about the machines taking over the world, yet. AI doesn’t have to exist in movies or something like the Vector too. It’s all already in the palm of your hands now. We take for granted our smartphones and laptops when some type of AI is already implemented in them. With machine learning, they’re able to provide us with news and information based on the topics we’ve searched for. At the end of the day, the AI that’s around us today are all very important in helping us accomplish major or mundane tasks. It’s both good and bad that we underestimate it, the AI is working as it was programmed but our complacency could spell the end of our independence of searching for answers.

onvene House, such an apt name for a little cafe unknowingly located inside the family owned Winner Hotel in Kampung Air. Yvonne and Vivien, partners of this little nook; a place where they aspire for people and families to come together drinking coffee and especially hand-picked teas from Taiwan and China. Their desserts are out of this world. If you crave something tart-y, the lemon tart will innately satisfy it; cinchai pie will just blow your mind with its luscious flavour. The tofu cake is a definite surprise and equally as mouth-watering are the citrus Madeleines and Sacher cake. Convene’s most prized sandwich is the elevated version of the local polo bun; constructed into a marvellous sandwich with chef ’s secret sauce. Pair these treats with their aesthetically oriental-chic cups of piccolo or specially brewed H+M (Houjicha+Matcha) which is a must have on every table or if you prefer teas, then try the Dong Ding Oolong. by Devyne Koh Images | Vance Tan

like being pleasantly surprised by food and I must say, I sure was at Tempurung Café. No wonder I’ve heard nothing but positive feedback and recommendations for this little eatery even before they moved to their new found home at Central Plaza. When I got there, I was greeted by the warm and bubbly coowner, Beverley Chow. Beverley has been immersed in the world of food from such a young age where she got her start selling nasi lemak prepared by her mother while in primary school. Therein began her love for cooking and food where, to date, she continues to experiment with new creations, combinations and flavours. In 2010, Beverley started an online catering and baking business and 9 years later joined her sister in what is now Tempurung Café. Tempurung Café’s humble beginnings, the yummy Tempurung Ice Cream, gained swift popularity in local markets such as the Jesselton Artisan Market, and later opened a small outlet at Gaya Street. As they expanded in space and menu, the

sisters saw an opportunity to embark on the endeavour together at Lido Four Seasons Condominium, offering not only their famous coconut ice cream but also specialty menu items based off of it as well as various delicious meals. Now at Central Plaza, Tempurung Café continues to attract new and returning customers. After tasting the spread in front of us, I can understand why. The first dish we attacked were the TIC Signature Waffles. The waffles came with a scoop of their signature coconut ice cream and respectively a drizzle of chocolate and gula melaka. So good! The waffles had the right amount of crisp and flavour, and the ice cream and drizzles complemented the waffles well. Next, I couldn’t resist one of their best sellers, Creamy Butter Chicken, a dish with fried coated boneless chicken morsels in a creamy butter sauce served with rice. This dish definitely did not disappoint and I am personally coming back to have more of this. The texture and flavour are just so beautifully balanced, it’s one of the best I’ve tried here in KK. We also had the pleasure of sampling their Daily Special, Grilled Chicken and Pesto Spaghetti. Their in-house pesto recipe starring celery and parsley was well seasoned and super tasty! Truly a unique take on the classic pesto recipe.

For burger lovers, there’s the Farmyard Special Burger which consists of a layer of fried chicken, fried egg and beef patty held together with a soft bun, cheese, onions and greens. The dish is served with V-cut potatoes. Our tummies were having a feast! Our next dish was the Meat-a-Saurus pizza, a thin crust pizza topped with pepperoni, beef sausage, beef bacon, chicken ham, olives, onions, cheeses and a tomato base. This is a great snack for hanging out with friends too! We were recommended by some of their loyal customers to try the Banana Pineapple smoothie, made with yet again their Tempurung Ice Cream. Normally I would stay away from banana smoothies because they can be way too rich for my liking but I’m glad we gave this a go because it is completely not what I had expected. The slight tang from the pineapple cuts through the creaminess of the banana smoothie resulting in a light refreshing delectable drink that I highly recommend you try at least once.

GRILLED CHICKEN AND PESTO SPAGHETTI

I picked the brain behind the smoothies, David, who spoke passionately about creating a menu item that incorporated not only their signature coconut ice cream, but also local flavours including raspberry cream cheese frosting that elevated the humble cake Pineapple, Coffee, Watermelon, Banana and Ginger Kalamansi. If to a new level. The carrot cake was oh-so-yummy too! These you’re looking for a healthy and delicious alternative to boba tea, simple cakes just made my day. why not give their smoothies a go? With a generous and affordable menu, you’re bound to find a dish that piques your palate. Some of their best sellers apart from the Creamy Butter Chicken are Grilled Chicken, Nasi Goreng Kampung, and Nasi Lemak. Craving IKEA meatballs? Drop by and order a plate of their Spaghetti Meatballs to satisfy those cravings.

TIC SIGNATURE WAFFLES

Beverley insists on the kitchen being a happy place and she promotes a positive environment for her other cooks and kitchen staff. She believes that when you’re cooking happy, the food served will radiate that energy to the customers as well.

I can’t wait to come back and try other items on their menu. Even though we pretty much had desserts as appetizers, that did Care to join me? not stop us from satiating our dessert quota one more time with cakes. Baked by Beverley herself, we sampled their red velvet and carrot cakes. The red velvet cake had a lovely texture and a ADDRESS : Tempurung Café, Central Plaza, Kepayan Ridge, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
