celebrates the dream of a wedding on Devon’s coast. Let these pages take you on a journey of sun-kissed seas and stirring romance, filled with gorgeous dresses, Devon-made jewels and stunning styling ideas. Devon is very much at the heart of ‘You, Me and the Sea’, an elopement shoot captured at Elberry Cove in south Devon and sprinkled with locally crafted dresses and jewellery. Free-spirited romance reigns supreme in north Devon, where ‘Angel of the North’ and ‘Lovers and Dreamers’ celebrate boho-glam fashion within touching distance of the Atlantic breakers. And ‘Still Waters’ draws on the mellow mood of the ocean to create a serene wedding scene. For those of you drawn to the rolling hills and tucked-away valleys of Devon’s rural heart, there’s ‘Luxe in the Country’, a masterclass in contemporary styling for a rustic barn setting, and, as the nights draw in and all things snug take centre stage, ‘Autumn Heart’ celebrates the bounty of the season with a boho-rustic edge. The real weddings in our ‘Got Wed’ section offer yet more evidence of the dream canvas this county offers for a wedding, taking us from Harriet and Shash’s celebrations overlooking the sprawling seascapes of Saunton Sands to Dipty and Ryan’s Indian-British fusion wedding in the atmospheric backdrop of Torquay’s Torre Abbey. The beauty of these settings echoes the beauty of the love stories that play out there. After 15 years of editing Wed Magazine, I don’t think I’ve ever felt more emotional at compiling these pages. From the medics who have worked so hard during the pandemic to the couples who have faced multiple postponements, I can’t tell you how happy it made me to see these gorgeous pairs savouring the day of their dreams – and having their nearest and dearest there to witness it. It’s such a privilege to share these moments of joy, love and euphoria with you, our lovely readers. I hope they inspire and fill you with excitement for your own dream day, wherever you choose to marry on these sublime shores. YOU, ME AND THE SEA

you, me and the sea A secluded corner of Devon’s south coast makes a dream setting for a summer elopement celebrating the handcrafted treasures of Devon artisans photography Maria Madison coordination Janie Wolverson, The Lucky Sixpence

Nestled along Devon’s south coast between Brixham and Paignton, Elberry Cove proved captivating for Agatha Christie – the small shingle beach is said to have been the writer’s favourite bathing spot and featured in one of her novels. Here, the tucked-away cove makes a serene canvas for an elopement on the water’s edge. “The aim of the shoot was to showcase the skills of Devon artisans and how an elopement wedding can be chic and unique by choosing handcrafted items,” explains Janie Wolverson of The Lucky Sixpence, who coordinated the shoot as well as designed and crafted the hair accessories and jewellery. Designed and made by hand in Torquay’s Cockington Court, a series of bridal ensembles from Dandelions and Pearls are captured against the beguiling backdrop of still waters, ancient rocks and the ruins of an 18th century bathhouse. From a romantic confection embellished with florals and a textured gown with dramatic balloon sleeves to a chic slip dress and fashion-forward two-piece, each look is as strikingly beautiful as it is lovingly made. Also handcrafted and hand-dyed in Devon, a silk kimono from Penelope’s Child brings a unique botanical finish to the bridal separates. Handmade wedding rings from Molten Wedding Ring Company and reworked vintage jewellery from The Lucky Sixpence complete the looks – ethereal drop earrings that catch the evening light, crystals suspended from dainty chains and headdresses awash with crystals and freshwater pearls are all one of a kind and incredibly beautiful. “Full of textures, movement and romance, this shoot is bound to inspire couples to enjoy the intimacy of a summer elopement in England,” concludes Janie.

MORE THAN A DRESS

Some people don’t seem to get it, do they? Granted, the

Freda Bennet, Kate Walker Bridal

melodramatic antics of a few

Suzanne Neville, The Ivory Lounge

don’t help, such as during one particularly memorable episode of ‘Don’t Tell The Bride’ in which after slipping into the gown chosen by her groom, the tearyeyed bride pouted: “I don’t even want to marry him!” Still, the fact remains that it isn’t just a dress.

Rosa Clara, Evolved Bridal

Moreover, it is one of the most important dresses that you’ll wear on one of the most important days

Kate Walker, Kate Walker Bridal

of your life. You’ll want to look and – more importantly – feel your absolute best. You’ll want a frock that represents your sense of style, fits and flatters your shape, and reflects your personality, love story, and the day that celebrates it all. Rebecca Ingram, Pirouette

Plus, it has to stand the sartorial test of time for the rest of your life whenever you swoon at those allimportant wedding photos. It sounds impossible, but is surprisingly simple. First off, ‘do you’. Try every type of silhouette and skirt length to find the one that you like and that likes you the most. Picked your perfect shape? Next it’s time to hone in on the details for a top-trending design feature or two Tara Statton

in order to create a fashion-forward ensemble that’s also forever yours.

Ellis Bridals, The Ivory Lounge

Brighton Belle, Pretty Smithy Bridal=

We’ve scoured the runways for four of our favourite and most wearable trends that should set your hearts suitably aflutter.

Full skirts Big skirts are nothing new, but they’ve received a very couture and modern makeover of late. Today’s skirts are made to move in and combine dynamic cuts and weightless fabrics for a transformative, dimensional and dance-floor-ready feel. Think layers of light-as-air tulle and organza, cascading ruffles, in-built or removable trains, detachable overskirts, giant back bustles, tiered skirts, and voluminous ball gowns for the most fabulous of full skirts. Frothy princess frocks smack of fairytale romance, while the clean and structured elegance of a mikado ball gown, figurehugging fit-and-flare, or an elaborate fishtail all ooze old school glamour. Contemporise the look with a two-piece comprising a flowing maxi, tassel or feathered skirt (or super-flared trousers) or play with hemlines such as a short/midi puffball skirt, a high-low ruffle tutu skirt, or a ‘50s rockabilly tea-length with extra petticoats.

Statement backs

Brighton Belle, Pretty Smithy Bridal

In a move away from pretty portrait backs and flowing shoulder ribbons, backs are becoming much more bold and daring. It is the perfect place for risqué fashion, as you can easily cover up skin-baring styles with an accessory du jour such as a cape, veil or shawl (beaded or feather toppers, lace capelets and faux fur shrugs are all making an appearance). Whether it’s to keep warm or preserve your modesty, you can reveal your statement back for the reception, or wow the congregation

Suzanne Neville, The Ivory Lounge

during your aisle walk. Sottero & Midgley, Pirouette

Bare backs are one of the leading looks, especially with a seductively deep plunge. Square and scooped cuts add a more sculpted

Kelsey Rose, The Ivory Lounge

edge, with open corsets and backless adding a wow-worthy theatrical air. For a more subtle yet still eye-catching version, think illusion backs (with floral embroidery), lace high necks, carefully placed cut-outs, draping cowl backs, and low keyhole details. Meanwhile, adornments and accessories such as hand-stitched beading and jewels, oversized back bows and back necklaces create further interest, while softening and individualising the overall effect.

jaw-dropping ways. Whether you envision channelling your inner hippie with head-to-toe lace, striking a note of timeless Hollywood glamour with a vintage lace top, or causing a sartorial stir with a lingerie-style lace corset, the brilliant versatility of lace lends itself to a multitude of looks. Elaborate patterns and embellishments ensure the mainstay remains fabulously en vogue. Laser-cut, geometric, guipure, 3D textured, lattice and patchwork lace are being worn all over, or via panelling and separates. Up the ante with beaded floral lace, graphic embroidery, pearl-encrusted and hand-sewn appliqué, 3D textured lace, or the new boho take on lace: crochet.

Off-the-shoulder One of the biggest buzzwords dropping off designers’ lips is décolleté. Off-the-shoulder gowns ooze elegance, but can also fall into the haute couture category courtesy of the latest dynamic designs. In particular, dropped sleeves are all the rage, and anything that incorporates them scores extra style points. One-shouldered asymmetric styles are seeing a resurgence, while bateau and cap-sleeved gowns give a beautiful vintage vibe. Detachable or illusion sleeves – especially the Juliet, bell and balloon varieties – add a gorgeously feminine and free-spirited twist, while an oversized offthe-shoulder puff creates a dose of modern drama.

With its dramatic cliffscape, rolling seas and endless sandy beaches, the wild romance of north Devon is difficult to resist for couples seeking a laid-back wedding immersed in the elements. In this styled shoot, grassy clifftops and ocean panoramas frame a dreamy wedding scene where boho elements meet coastal inspiration. A vintage VW campervan makes a coolly relaxed backdrop for a ceremony as well as offering photo booth fun for the celebrations. Styled with an abundance of dried flowers and grasses, snug cushions and rugs, together with seashore treasures such as driftwood, shells and starfish, natural textures and free-spirited vibes abound. And the bridal look – a crochet lace dress, dried flower crown and statement earrings – is the stuff of bohemian dreams, perfect for living out your romantic reveries on the water’s edge.

HANDMADE AND HEARTFELT What could be more personal – and memorable – than making your own wedding rings together? Located in Okehampton’s Victorian Arcade on the edge of Dartmoor, Moon & Moor gallery makes a charm-packed setting to spend a day of crafting under the guidance of talented jeweller Corrinne Eira Evans. Drawing on over 15 years of experience in the industry, Corrinne will guide you through the making process, ensuring you have the perfect rings as the incredibly special day draws to a close. “The morning starts with making a ‘dummy’ silver ring to get you comfortable with working in metal and knowing the process, with the afternoon focused on the completion of your wedding rings,” she explains. Corrinne will provide a consultation prior to your workshop, discussing metals, widths, finishes and profile shapes. You can choose from silver, gold (9ct or 18ct), platinum or palladium. While your choice of materials will be quoted for on booking, a range of celebratory extras – bubbly, refreshments and photographs – are all provided and included in the workshop cost. “It’s a fun, relaxed day, and an experience you’ll talk about for years to come,” says Corrinne. “I will be on hand at every stage of the process, documenting your day with photographs too. These workshops are always a joy and the delight at the results is just magical.” moonandmoor.com

PERFECT MATCH Renowned for his contemporary jewellery crafted from recycled precious metals, salvaged woods and ethically sourced gemstones, jeweller Justin Duance is perhaps best known for his sandcast creations. This set is a captivating example, featuring an engagement ring, a set of textured wedding rings and a matching set of studs to be gifted on the wedding morning. “All the pieces are cast in recycled 14ct white gold which has a lovely stormy grey colour, and each piece has had little reclaimed vintage diamonds organically set for a subtle sparkle as they catch the light,” explains Jamila Hirtenstein at Justin Duance. “The couple chose sand from our collection to cast the rings Emily Collet

and studs in. We happened to have the sands from their favourite beaches in Thailand where they love to holiday.” Although the workshop houses a considerable collection of sand from across the globe, couples are welcome to source sand from a particular beach, whether it was the location of your engagement or the setting of a childhood holiday, to create a ring rich with texture and personal significance. justind.co.uk

BESPOKE AND BEAUTIFUL Every couple wants to add a personal element to their wedding celebrations, and we love the idea of extending your personality to your wedding jewellery. Drakes’ bespoke service can help bring your ideas to life and create a piece of jewellery you can treasure long after the excitement of your day starts to fade, from bespoke wedding rings and bridal jewellery to cufflinks and bridesmaid gifts. This bespoke pendant and earrings (pictured) was recently created for one of their brides. “The bride wasn’t entirely sure what she wanted so the team worked closely with her to find out more about her dress, her hair and what other jewellery in store took her fancy before coming up with this idea,” explains Nicola Price at Drakes. “The bride even got to see a ‘to scale’ wax model of the items before going ahead with her purchase. The result, we think you will agree, is simply beautiful!” If you’re keen to add a unique and beautifully ‘you’ touch to your wedding ensemble, simply pop into the Plymouth store and speak to one of their friendly and knowledgeable team. drakesjewellers.co.uk

GOING GREEN Going green means more than an eco-friendly ethos as it finds new form in the world of fashion. From dark fern and light sage to pastel mint and earthy pistachio, green is grooms wear’s current colour crush. Whether you select your favourite shade and wear it as a three-piece suit or choose a single feature or accessory such as your tie, waistcoat, blazer or boutonnière, any tint from the spectrum will freshen up your ensemble. Turn heads with a striking forest green suit, achieve rustic dapper with mossy tweed, or layer a mix of tones for a look bursting with depth. Perfect for a country, botanical-styled or nature-inspired shindig, green is as gorgeously perennial as it is tantalisingly on-trend. 1. ASOS asos.com 2. Favourbrook favourbrook.com 3. Set in acres of picture-perfect Devon countryside with far-reaching views across the Blackdown Hills, Upton Barn and Walled Garden is a rural dream. Tranquil, scenic and abloom with a carnival of colour in the warmer months, this secluded venue comprises a cluster of lovingly restored barns and a walled garden with a lavender aisle and stunning oak arbour. Bringing a captivating contemporary vibe to the country, this styled shoot illustrates how a fresh, stylish aesthetic can work beautifully with the rural charm and panoramas of the barn venue. “We wanted to demonstrate how a rustic, typical barn setting can be elevated with help from textures, florals and fabric installations to provide a setting to the most stylish of celebrations,” explains stylist and wedding planner Rebecca Marie of Rebecca Marie Weddings. “The crittel windows in the Stable Barn provided a modern backdrop to our minimal yet comfortable reception set-up, with a top table that was adorned with the most simple and stylish of features.” These features include dainty white blooms in sleek black vases, clean and elegant stationery and a texturerich cake echoing the limewashed walls of the Cider Barn – the monochrome palette combining with textures of wood, linen and metallics to create a paredback yet gorgeously luxe wedding scene. This carries into the walled garden where a glorious abundance of foliage and crisp blooms, dotted with cappuccino roses, frame the bride and groom at the arbour, the hues blending seamlessly with the setting. Chic, curve-hugging gowns from Australian designer Made With Love strike the perfect fashion-forward chord for the look – simple yet glamorous, relaxed yet romantic – while the groom’s linen suit mirrors the scheme in effortlessly cool style.

As the days grow cooler and the nights draw in, our thoughts turn to the charms of autumn: a season of rich colours, full flavours, crisp air and cosy moments – an endlessly romantic time to get married. Here, Westcott Barton is the canvas for a celebration of the season. Set in a secluded north Devon valley, the venue is styled with gorgeous blooms, lush foliage, soft candlelight and boho-rustic touches. A celebration of nature blending earthy hues, ivy and twisted hazel with feathers and fresh apples, the tablescape looks magical against the characterful backdrop of the barn. “Gold cutlery and gold tea light holders add luxurious elements while reflecting the warm tones of autumn colours,” explains the shoot’s stylist Katie Stevens of Best.Day. Ever! (bestdayeverdevon.co.uk). “We also used candlelight to add to the ambience of the barn.” The sumptuous scene continues in the orangery, where twinkling chandeliers nestle grapevine foliage, and glorious sharing platters and delectable cocktails garnished with fruit brim with colour and flavour. Flowers are key in enhancing this feeling of abundance. “A stunning blend of dahlias, large bloom roses, grasses, orange fire thorn berries, dried bunny tail grasses and scabiosa pods, seasonal flowers, and foliage were used in the bouquets and adorned both the celebration arch and the glorious floral crown,” explains photographer Laura Farmer of Freeformimages Photography (freeformimages.co.uk). Hurricane lanterns are dotted throughout, while macramé features - from the table runner to a large hanging on weathered driftwood - bring a textured boho element to the scene. Benches wrapped in sheepskin add to the cosy mood for an al fresco ceremony in the gardens. Her long hair echoing the rich colours of the season, the bride wears a soft, romantic dress of sheer lace and floaty tulle paired with delicate jewellery inspired by the grounds of Westcott Barton itself. In his neutral tweed suit and burnished orange tie, her groom also takes his styling cue from the tones of autumn - a season ripe with inspiration.

The coastline is an endless source of inspiration for a wedding scheme, its many moods stirring everything from a fun, beach party feel or a laidback bohemian vibe to a wildly dramatic look inspired by winter seas. Here, it’s the ocean in serene, muted mode that provides the starting point for an atmospheric shoreline celebration. “Cool pebbled beaches and cloudy sunsets on a September’s eve set the muted tones for this styled shoot,” explains Laura Dalton of Kept Weddings, who styled and coordinated the shoot. Perched within touching distance of the ocean, the stone walls of Polhawn Fort blend seamlessly into the cliffscape, while the cloud-filled skies mirror the grey-blue seas – the natural tones and textures finding ethereal expression in the table styling. “Bringing the outside in, the tablescape is scattered with natural shades of stone and taupe, which is echoed through the design of the tiered wedding cake,” says Laura. Delicate draping and a table runner dotted with pearls, clear glassware, marbled textures and fresh-fromthe-seashore finds – from shells and pebbles to dried flowers that echo fronds of seaweed – bring a modern yet elegant mood to the ocean theme. The bride and groom complete the picture. “A bouquet of dried flowers and coastal inspired jewellery were a feature against the bride’s delicate low-cut dress, while the hairstyle, sprinkled with pearls, was designed to represent cascading waves,” says Laura. The soft grey of the groom’s suit also slots perfectly into the scene, echoing the hues of the Atlantic breakers.

THE GUEST EDIT

that their place on your guest list is conditional on good behaviour. If tensions are high, it might be worth arranging a separate mini celebration, before or after the big day, with anyone who you feel may not be able to put any ill feelings aside for your wedding day.

Friends reunited Yes, we know you promised to be each other’s dress designers when you were 10, but it’s understandable that you might prefer more grown-up designs these days. Friends, of course, are a big part of our wedding days, but try not to launch into your guest list like it was the year 2000. Times and people change. Are the people you promised to party the night away with still a part of your lives? If your friendship groups have matured and diversified over the years, and the numbers are pushing your guest list well over your limit, it might be worth deciding whether to have a few friends from lots of different groups or stick to a couple of groups with more from each group. A single uni friend might struggle if they are reminiscing about the good old days amongst your newbie friends who’ve only known you in your more ‘grown-up years’ and can’t quite imagine you spinning around a sticky dance floor. If this means numbers start to go in the wrong direction, you may have to rule out any new partners who you haven’t met yet. Or perhaps you could organise a separate get-together for certain groups.

Parents’ pride Mum and dad’s friends. Ahh. The ones you still see and called Auntie and Uncle, even though they technically aren’t, are probably high up on your list. However, the couple you haven’t seen since you did a recorder recital for them all those years ago might be trickier to fit into an already-bulging guest list. Guest lists can become complex when parents are contributing to the cost of the wedding, so if this is the case, you may have to agree on a set number of guests they can invite (and accept whoever that is). However, if you are footing the bill, and you have a very open and honest relationship with your parents, broach the subject of their friends not making the grade. If venue size and budget are considerations, be upfront and honest. But if it’s more of a personality clash, and you think they’ll stick out like a sore thumb in amongst the rest of your guests, try to steer around it by suggesting you involve them in another way. Perhaps you could organise a day together where you show them the wedding photos and reminisce about the recorder recital days?!

Colleague conundrum Work friends can often be good sounding boards during wedding planning, as you can discuss everything from veil lengths to bouquet ideas during water cooler moments and lunchtimes. But do they make the grade on the guest list? Weddings can be emotionally intimate events, so it depends on your relationship with your colleagues. If you have intense, formal relationships at work, think long and hard if this is going to translate into your day.

feature | THE GUEST EDIT

Do you know your colleagues outside work? No one wants to feel awkward on their wedding day when you realise you’ve only ever seen your colleagues in their power suits and now, you’re sobbing into their arms after one too many champagnes. However, if your relationship with your boss or some of your colleagues is relaxed and perhaps you know each other outside of a work capacity, this might make for a more organic approach to adding them to your guest list. Don’t feel pressurised for a blanket work invitation though, as this is a quick way for numbers to spiral. Ultimately, if work and weddings really don’t mix well for you, and your guest list is looking longer than a Pronovias veil, organise a post-work drink where those who want to can wish you well.

One-on-ones Sometimes, acquaintances don’t fit into any of your social groups, and if your guest list is tipping into one-out-one-in territory, it might be wise to organise your happy news with but isn’t a close friend or one of a group of friends. Ideas for these kinds of dos

Between Facebook friends, school mates and everyone in-between, the reality for some may be that you can’t invite everyone you want to your big day – but how you go about managing those relationships is key to a happy and healthy guest list. Just try to remember that those who make it onto your guest list should be the people you really want to share your special day with.

CHEERS! The Buffalo/Drinks by Post

Eat, drink and be merry. Sounds simple enough. And while most couples design their menu and entertainment for crowd-pleasing effect, the wedding drinks don’t always receive the same amount of consideration. A welcome drink, something to toast and a few evening tipples must be all it takes, I hear you cry? But to get the best out of your day – and your guests – give them something to drink that’s as unique, flavoursome and stylish as the rest of your celebrations. Who wants a lukewarm Pimm’s when a cool signature cocktail made to order from a wow-worthy mobile bar is an option? We look at how to spruce up your drinks menu and its delivery to guarantee the most unforgettable of parties...

You’re barred Firstly, what type of bar do you want? If your venue already has one, then stock it up and style it out to individually suit. Ask if they can provide a mixologist (or hire your own, with permission) or create a bespoke drinks menu for you. Find out what the options are in order to be as creative and personalised as possible. If you’re hiring a mobile bar service, there are three main options: a cash/card bar Aperol Spritz

(guests will need to be notified in advance), a half and half bar, where couples put a pre-selected amount behind the bar to essentially buy their guests’ first few drinks, or a free bar (for which you’ll be invoiced after the event).

The Buffalo/Drinks by Post

Your budget will likely determine what kind of bar you choose, along with the types of drinks you offer. Discuss monetary matters with your venue and suppliers in order to achieve the best balance between quality and quantity without obliterating your bank balance.

’Tis the season The time of year will have a bearing on your choice of drinks. Nothing beats a bit of mulled wine or a well-aged whisky in winter, while summer is the perfect time to proffer an exotic cocktail or spritz to your guests. “The autumn and winter months have the biggest change in flavours and types of drink,” says Jo Fitch from The Buffalo (thebuffalo.co.uk), whose statement Airstream bars present customised liquid catering of the most lust-worthy kind. “The shorter, stronger drinks as well as warm ones come into play at this time of year and then the lighter, longer, fruitier ones during the sunshine months. With the hotter days, we like to steer towards the lower ABV drinks like a Cornish Spritz (Knightor vermouth and soda) or a Collins. A particular favourite is the Elderflower Collins (citron vodka, elderflower, lemon and soda), keeping guests refreshed rather than weak at the knees! On the cooler Cornish Spritz

autumnal days, a Hot Gin Toddy or an Old-Fashioned are great for sipping and warming the cockles. However, bubbles never go out of fashion!”

The Buffalo/Drinks by Post

Grand reception Whether you want to host a mini pre-ceremony reception – an increasingly popular way to greet guests and create a celebratory atmosphere – or wait until after the vows have been uttered, the drinks reception signifies the party’s official start. The trick is to provide both refreshment and relaxation, so shots and beer-necking aren’t advised at this stage. Focus on the presentation, flavour and experience – with a soundtrack and décor to match. Pick something that reflects you, the season, venue or your wedding theme, and whet your guests’ appetites for the wedding breakfast ahead. “We recommend a long, light drink with some fizz so guests can take their time enjoying it and are refreshed ready for the party ahead,” suggests Jo. “Something like an Elderflower Collins is a great crowd-pleaser and allows us to prepare multiple drinks at a time and then just top up as guests arrive. It can be pretty too – we like to serve it garnished with a flower.”

Drink and dine Whatever catering you choose – whether a buffet, barbecue, street food or sit-down 10-course taster menu – try to match your drinks to your food. For example, a Elderflower Collins

barrel of local beers and ciders works brilliantly with a burger van or hog roast, while

wine pairing can elevate a meal to a fine dining experience. Discuss your ideas with your caterers and drinks suppliers in order to host

the most delectable of wedding feasts. “Wine is obviously the traditional choice, but we increasingly see couples going a bit more personalised for the meal. With more drinks available and tastes changing, catering options are changing too; we’ve seen a rise in barbecue and picnic-style meals where couples want their guests to choose their own drink from the bar,” observes Jo. “We now have couples opting for drink tokens as favours so they can bring their token to the bar and exchange them for a beer, cider, soft drink, cocktail or a glass of wine. These are favours that never get left behind on the table too! I’d suggest taking a minute to think about your meal and what you would like to drink with it, rather than thinking you have to do it the traditional way,” she advises.

Raise a glass Though a glass of bubbly is the traditional choice, not everyone

(gasp!) actually likes champagne or Prosecco. As it brings a sense of occasion, it’ll be expected to make an appearance at the bar or table by most, but why not also present guests with a more personal or surprising alternative? A cocktail designed by the couple (a twist on your favourite, or inspired by the night you became engaged, perhaps?) or even a shot of something such as tequila, cherry vodka or limoncello works well to ramp up the party atmosphere while infusing a different taste sensation into this part of proceedings. “Do what makes you smile!” says Jo of the endless array of toastworthy tipples.

Party starters

Old Fashioned

“Cocktails!” sings Jo of the ultimate party drink. “The most popular choice is an Espresso Martini. It gets the party rolling and perks you up ready to hit the dance floor! Also, a Hurricane, Passionfruit

The Buffalo/Drinks by Post

Martini, Margarita – the list goes on...” There’s no rule here – it’s all about pleasing yourselves and your guests to foster a state of revelry and let-your-hair-down abandon. Why not ask guests to write down their favourite drink via their RSVP so that it can be stocked in the bar, presented as a favour or featured on the cocktail menu? And don’t forget you can always add a hit of alcohol in other ways, such as a boozy dessert, drinks fountain or a Bailey’s coffee with petit fours, while additions like mini alcoholic jellies and cocktail ice lollies provide extra fun, flavour and colour.

Booze-free beauties Don’t forget that you’ll need some non-alcoholic thirst-quenchers to keep guests of all ages and states of sobriety hydrated and happy.

Espresso Martini

Again, this provides an opportunity to be inventive with your drinks by creating a virgin cocktail list, tropical smoothie or super juice menu – or you could book a mobile café with a selection of hot

beverages and specialist coffees for caffeine perks, belly warmers, and afternoon teas. “We always provide at least two mocktail options such as a homemade raspberry lemonade, strawberry Nojito or virgin Hurricane,” enthuses Jo of the lip-smacking list available. “All are fantastic drinks in their own right and the young ones just love to have a cocktail made just for them!”

Cocktail hour If you’re seeking an exceptional gin with a generous serving of Devon character and flavour, you can’t beat the multi award-winning flagship gin, Start Point, from Salcombe Distilling Co. Inspired by the voyages of the Salcombe Fruit Schooners – ships built in Salcombe and Kingsbridge in the 19th century to carry fresh fruits and spices from around the world to English shores – this London Dry blends Dartmoor water with the finest botanicals to create a smooth, elegant and truly memorable G&T. There’s a plethora of other spirits from the Salcombe distillery if you fancy a twist on the classic. ‘Daring’ from the limited-edition Voyager Series has been created in collaboration with Michelin-starred chef Paul Ainsworth. Inspired by his dish ‘A Tale of Porthilly’, the gin is distilled with whey and foraged Cornish botanicals to create a distinctive and delicious flavour. Then there’s Rosé Sainte Marie, the award-winning pink gin inspired by the aromas and flavours of the Mediterranean coast – a perfect tipple for a summer celebration. salcombegin.com

Over the moon Thought to be the oldest of alcohols, mead has associations with everyone from the Greeks and the Romans to the Vikings; the drink – often called honey wine – even has a mention in the Bible and Chaucer’s ‘The Canterbury Tales’. Perhaps most interestingly for nearly-weds, mead is considered ‘the drink of love’ as it was traditionally served at weddings and drunk during the 30 days after a wedding in the hope of a child arriving nine months later – hence the term ‘honeymoon’. This ancient favourite has received a modern makeover by Devonbased company, Moonhoney. Made by hand in south Devon using the finest ingredients and orange blossom honey, the collection of sparkling craft meads is available in four flavours – elderflower, hopped, summer fruits and ginger – and makes a deliciously aromatic and crowd-pleasing tipple for a drinks reception (just remember to

Wine and dine You can’t beat a crisp white wine at a summer wedding, and Sandridge Barton Wines has a glorious selection of Devon wines to suit. Previously Sharpham Wines, the esteemed winemaker has moved wine production to the new winery next to Sandridge Barton’s large vineyard on the edge of the River Dart. Producing a range of English white, red, rosé and sparkling wines, we’re particularly partial to the Sharpham Estate Selection: a light, dry white wine with aromas of green apple, gooseberry and elderflower, which makes a perfect pairing for a fish course or simply easy drinking in the sunshine. Then there’s the crisp, delicate and fruity delights of Sharpham Sparkling Pink – another winner for a summer celebration in Devon. sharpham.com/sandridge-barton-wines

Born to rum From the shores of the Caribbean to the coast of south Devon, Hattiers Rums blends hand-picked rums from across the globe with soft Dartmoor water to create an exceptional collection of spirits – and they’re just as delicious on the rocks as they are in your favourite rum cocktail. We love ‘Eminence’, a smooth blend of aged and un-aged rums from Barbados, Australia, Trinidad and Jamaica with a vanilla pod, creamy fudge and ripe pineapple aroma. Head to the website for some tantalising cocktail inspiration, including Hattiers Devon Storm made with another local favourite, Luscombe Hot Ginger Beer, and Hot Hattiers, a warming winter rum punch blended with Hunts Hazy Dazy Devon Cider. hattiers.com

From the land and sea Lovingly grown in the rich soil and fresh sea air of a family farm overlooking Hope Cove in south Devon, King Edwards potatoes are the key ingredient of Cove Vodka. This fine Devon produce, together with Devon spring water, are combined with small batch traditional copper pot distillation to create the pure, clean and exceptionally smooth vodka. While it’s divine served on its own, its versatility makes it perfect for pairing with any flavour: favourites include vodka, lime and soda; and Cove Vodka Collins. The artisan distillery also handcrafts damson liqueur (add a drop to champagne or prosecco for a luxe fruity flavour) and coffee liqueur (great for after-dinner espresso martinis) as well as gift boxes and cocktail kits, which make brilliant Devon-inspired presents for your bridal party or new spouse! devoncove.co.uk

Apple of my eye Cider is the ultimate drink to serve at a Devon country wedding – and Sandford Orchards has a refreshing option to suit all tastes. Based in the oldest working cider mill in the UK, the family-owned orchard in the heart of the county has the perfect micro-climate to grow cider apples. Rejecting shortcuts, artificial flavours and aromas, the team pride themselves on making cider ‘the right way’ – pressing and fermenting the best natural ingredients and letting them age to perfection. And it certainly tells: their beautifully balanced ciders are a delight. Choose from contemporary session ciders, traditional, fine, and flavoured ciders, including ginger, berry and blossom. Or you might opt for the Ice Cider – a freeze-strengthened cider that leads to a more intense, sweeter and richer taste – or Katja, a vibrant prosecco-style cider, perfect to serve as an alternative welcome drink. sandfordorchards.co.uk

Soft and stylish Don’t forget to think outside of the non-boozy box and treat your non-drinking guests to something special. Crafted in small batches using bespoke techniques on their Devon farm, the fine-tasting organic drinks blend the finest quality whole fruits and wild ingredients with Dartmoor spring water. With wedding season in full swing, it may be that you see similar ideas and themes pop up again and again… so feel free to use them for inspiration – there’s a reason they’re popular, after all. We’ve picked out some of our favourite ideas for bringing a personality-packed touch to your day.

Personalised aisle runners This can thread a truly personalised feel into your ceremony before it has even begun. Aisles can be created in a range of different fabrics to tie in with your theme – burlap or jute for an outdoor ceremony, for example – or your aisle can be printed with your names, wedding date, or even a surprise message to your other half. We’ve also seen famous quotes and song lyrics printed beneath the happy couple’s feet.

Wedding guest book advice cards Leave note cards at a guest book station or on the reception tables for guests to share in a personal PaperGrace, Not on the High Street

piece of advice during the day. Once written, these are lovely to display at your venue, hung on a tree or simply used as a garland decoration at your reception. Either leave the cards blank for your guests’ wise words or prompt some responses with headings such as ‘Always…’, ‘Never…’ and ‘Sometimes…’. Once your cards are complete,

Go beyond paper and ask guests to write their advice on wooden blocks, to create a Jenga-style tower packed with advice from your nearest and dearest. This makes a lovely display on the day and a truly special keepsake for years to come. You can even organise a game of Jenga on future wedding anniversaries and see whether you have heeded the advice! A similar idea, for arty types, is to create a heart shape made from either driftwood or old corks. Once you have created the shape, guests can then write their messages across each cork or piece of driftwood, and by the end you should have a beautiful and bespoke piece of artwork brimming with well wishes.

DebbiePatchworkLady, Etsy

Create a quilt guestbook For a really homespun approach, leave your guests small squares of fabric to sign at your guestbook station, and then spend time after your wedding day sewing them together to create a quilt bedecked with your guests’ words. This will become a lovely keepsake that will keep you both warm, and cover you in wishes, throughout your marriage.

Confetti bar

Shropshire Petals

Shropshire Petals

Confetti bars are a super-cute and simple way to decorate your venue. We love antique desks or drawers stuffed with different shades of confetti, for guests to help themselves to. You can also use dried herbs or flowers as confetti, which will add a beautiful scent to your day. Use a variety of colours to match your theme and watch your day explode into a kaleidoscope of whimsical pastels or be showered with pops of zesty brights… And make sure your photographer is on hand to catch the colourful celebrations!

Self-service bar The idea of a self-service bar at a wedding will surely be met with rapturous applause. Create a bespoke setting with chalkboard or neon signs – depending on your theme – and a bar set-up to match. We love the idea of mismatched antique drinking vessels or a prosecco or champagne wall where guests can simply help themselves to a glass of bubbles. Huge jars full of garnishes such as cucumber, strawberries and mint for Pimm’s, or various straws and stirrers for cocktails, will look visually stunning. Edible flowers frozen inside ice cubes are beautiful, and little ones will love this too, making their water or juice much more grown-up! You may wish to ask a responsible best man or bridesmaid to take turns to watch over the bar to rein in any extra enthusiasm as the evening goes on!

Family tree If you love the idea of incorporating your family into your day, hang individual picture frames of family members on to a tree. If you’re outside, this could work wonders on an old oak tree or similar, to represent the passing of time or, for an indoor option, use an artificial tree or trees in pots. Bedeck the trunk or branches with pictures, going back as many generations as you can. What a lovely way to gather your entire family – both past and present – and

“Is the field flat enough to erect a marquee or tipi?” asks Jenny. “If the ground is uneven, some marquee companies can provide a hard wooden floor to level it out instead of coconut matting; however, this can come at a substantial extra cost.” You’ll also need to establish whether there’s a power and water connection. “If not, both can be brought in but there will be a cost associated with that. Is there good vehicle access for the suppliers and guests? Is there plenty of parking? Is there room for toilets if they need to be hired in? Think about where these will go,” she continues. “Is the field private? If it’s on a walking path, it could get busy with passers-by on a summer’s day,” says Jenny of how minor concerns can become big inconveniences if not afforded their due diligence in advance. “And how long is the hire period? Often marquee companies will want to set up a few days before the wedding, which gives you time for all the deliveries, such as furniture, kitchen equipment, and time to dress it,” she adds of the host of questions you should be asking yourself and your suppliers.

As you may be starting to realise, planning an outdoor wedding involves much more than picking a site and pitching a tent. “You’ll need a budget for furniture and possibly toilets and generators as well,” says wedding stylist Nikki Sheriff from Knots & Kisses (knotsandkisses.co.uk). Sam reels off the extensive list. “Toilets, showers, water, and electricity: the not-so-glamorous areas, but absolutely essential for ensuring that your day goes without a hitch! Whether you’re using your own contacts or booking these through your supplier then you need to know how much power everything needs. Think about who will be using electricity on the day, as you need to ensure that your generator has enough capacity. If you’re linking up on-site you need to ensure that there is enough supply to cover catering, bands, lighting, etc. Once a floor plan is established, also have a think about where you will want power points.”

pizzas and waffles all cooked to order. Guests could have whatever they liked, whenever they liked!” says Jenny. “Sweet drinks in the sunshine can attract insects, so light some citronella candles around your drinks reception table to keep them away,” she advises. “How about ice lollies instead of canapés, which could be handmade with frozen edible flowers? Drinks dispensers are great as they allow people to refill their drinks as much as they like, encouraging them to keep hydrated. Ensure you fill some with water and not just booze!”

After the after-party Don’t forget to plan for the big pack away. “If your outdoor wedding is not at a venue, think about who will take care of the clean-up the day after,” implores Jenny. “The last thing you and your partner want to be doing the day after is cleaning up beer bottles, so hire someone to do this, or if you have a planner they could take care of it. Also speak with your caterer and bar company to check if they take away their rubbish and recycling. If you’re having a marquee, the company will expect it empty of rubbish when they come to collect, which includes flower installations too.”

So long as you leave no stone unturned and come up with plenty of workable contingencies, your wild wedding should play out in the most wow-worthy of ways.

PLAY TIME

If you’ve decided to welcome guests’ children at your wedding, chances are you’re imagining them to be full of fun and oh-so cute. But with guests wanting to party, and children wanting to play, it’s a good idea to have a few ideas up your sleeve to keep everyone happy…

Scavenger hunts Who doesn’t love a scavenger hunt? Organise a trail for your littlest guests and let them run around the grounds of your venue looking for their treasure. Themes such as Peter Rabbit, Superheroes, Nature, or Love (it is a wedding, after all!) can make lovely scavenger hunt themes. If you happen to be getting married around Easter, you have a ready-made theme, and your little folk will no doubt be delighted to look for Easter eggs. Crafty types could fashion wooden signs or clues to match your theme and help your little ones along the trail. Hunts and trails could also incorporate the happy couple. “Ask the children to find things beginning with the couple’s initials,” suggests Elsie Preddy from Cornwall Childcare (cornwallchildcare.com), which offers wedding crèches and wedding nannies, as well as babysitting and overnight care services. Ask children to collect their treasure for a prize at the end – we love personalised felt buckets. And while collecting treasures along the way may work well for a small do, if there are hordes of children, it might be easier to ask them to tick the things they find off a list “or get them to take photos of the treasures they are looking for,” suggests Elsie. Polaroid cameras will mean they can show off their finds instantly and they will love the instant appeal of the images popping out of the camera. “You’ll have the memories forever and some lovely photos from a child’s point of view,” adds Elsie.

Themed tents Decorated tents, yurts, or wigwams for children to run between, hide inside, and craft in, make beautiful focal points at outside areas, too. Fill each tent with a rug, scatter cushions and the all-important crafting box where little ones can make and do in the comfort of their own space. If you choose tents that are a blank canvas, your littlest ones could always decorate them using washable pens, felt shapes, pom-poms, and bunting. Perhaps you could set a challenge for the best-dressed tent? “Choose magic painting books, too,” says Elsie. “They are mess-free!” Sticker books may also

Older children could be given the role of official reportage photographer and could set up their studio in a yurt or tent and invite guests, young and old, to be photographed. It may be best to stick with an official photographer, too, though!

LET THE MUSIC PLAY

If music be the food of love… You don’t need to have a Shakespeare-themed wedding to appreciate that music and love are intertwined. Indeed, so many of the greatest songs ever written have love at their heart. So, on your wedding day – a day filled with joy and emotion – music can be at the heart of each step. Music can fill spaces when people are arriving or leaving, create an atmosphere in an instant, make us howl with laughter or shed a tear, as well as help to sum you up as a couple and set the mood and tone for the rest of the day. As music is so personal, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. So here are some musical ideas for your wedding day, whatever shape and size it may take…

Getting ready If you’re getting ready with friends, music can play a significant part in your preparations. A get-together with the girls or boys could open up the potential for some tunes to reminisce to, perhaps from your childhood, or school or college days, depending on how long you’ve known each other. Choose songs that remind you of each other, of fun times and memories made. If you have the time, you could always set the music to images to create a nostalgic video montage.

Prelude (as your guests arrive) Gentle background music can create a lovely atmosphere as your guests eagerly arrive for your wedding. As anticipation and nerves are usually running high at this stage, something calming and mellow is usually a good fit rather than anything too loud or boisterous. Traditionally, string quartets are used as a serene soundtrack to welcome guests.

The processional (bride’s arrival) Depending on the style and theme of the day, entrances can vary from traditional, such as ‘Pachelbel’s Canon’, ‘Bridal Chorus’ or ‘Ave Maria’, to something more contemporary. However, it’s important to take your pace into consideration. You don’t want to be galloping down the aisle, or likewise if you choose anything too slow, you might struggle to find your groove. If you’ve got your heart set on a favourite tune but it’s just too fast, consider a slowed-down or acoustic version. Well-known retro or contemporary love songs that your guests will likely know and love often make for a tear-jerking entrance for a bride.

Recessional (leaving your ceremony) These are the songs typically played as you make your way back down the aisle from your ceremony (or however you choose to leave). This is the time to up

From throwback playlists and choral numbers to rousing sing-songs and acoustic ensembles, here’s how to make music rock your day words Elizabeth Chester

the tempo should you want to – think joyous, bursting with excitement and love-filled. We’ve witnessed many a bride and groom boogie their way back down the aisle, impromptu-style, because the music and the atmosphere were just too much to resist! This can also be a chance to get creative with your sound. Who can forget the gospel choir singing ‘All You Need Is Love’ in the film ‘Love Actually’ complete with strings, brass, and an electric guitar solo? Other filmbased choices include ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’

from ‘Toy Story’; Frank Sinatra’s It Had to Be You’ from ‘When Harry Met Sally’ and ‘We Go Together’ from Grease.

Reception Entering your reception as newly-weds is a wonderful moment when you won’t be able to wipe the smile off your face, so choose a tune to reflect this feeling. Uptempo songs to reflect your togetherness and happiness always work well, or you might choose to add humour with perhaps a film soundtrack if one of you is a fan of a particular film. We’ve seen couples recently enter to the ‘Match of the Day’ theme tune, and ‘The Eye of the Tiger’. True champs! If you haven’t seen the ‘Say A Little Prayer’ scene from ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’, you need to check it out. An entire restaurant bursting into song is one of our greatest weddingrelated musical loves, and there’s no reason you can’t encourage your guests to do a group singalong. You could always organise this as a surprise for your other half if they have a penchant for karaoke-style moments!

First dance This is often the big one. Whether your first dance encompasses just the newly-weds, or your entire wedding party pile on to the dance floor and get things started, there are numerous musical ways to kick off the dancing. Swaying to a love song is an obvious win for the couple, although if you want to forego anything slow, consider opting for a choreographed first dance with a routine from one of your favourite movies or dance videos. Flash mobs are also an option if you want to launch straight in and get people foot-tapping and itching to dance right away. If you opt for a traditional, slow first dance, once it draws to a close, good

Noah Werth Photography

DJs will be able to seamlessly blend a floor-filler in for the rest of your guests, so they can step onto the dance floor to join you.

Party DJs will take the strain away from you having to spend weeks thinking of your all-time favourite tunes to fill three hours of party time. Most wedding DJs will be able to collate a playlist you didn’t know you loved with just a few simple pointers in the right direction. Bands are another option for dancing the night away. Covers bands for hardcore fans can work well, whether it’s a surprise for guests or your other half, and can usually put together a bespoke package based on songs you love.

Finale Whether it’s your whole party exiting a forest glade at sunset or just the two of you roaring off in an MG or old banger to the clatter of tin cans tied to the back, leaving your wedding offers an opportunity for a soundtrack that sums up the mood of the day. Leaving guests both desperate for more and full of fond memories, you might opt for anthemic, celebratory music as fireworks fill the sky, or create a festival feel with a headlinerworthy tune played by a live band amidst a carnival of tea lights. For a more mellow vibe, an acoustic band could follow you from the venue to the carriages. Whatever your favoured style of music, let your imagination rule when it comes to the sound of your big day. Think about the feeling you’re trying to create – look to your favourite films, music videos, books and archives for inspiration – and go with whatever you love the sound of!

feature | WEATHERING THE STORM

With the ever-changing Covid situation and its constant climate of uncertainty, couples have been catapulted between extremes of emotion like hope and despair, sorrow and joy, which has a draining impact individually and on their relationship. “It’s been testing on a personal level for us,” admits Morwenna. “As a couple, we’ve coped well but there’s definitely been a frequent stressor hanging over us. The worst bit is knowing that our moment of happiness could be ripped away at any second.” So what is the best way to deal with the sense of overwhelm and myriad moods you may find yourself in? “The most important thing in terms of your relationship with your partner is to acknowledge the situation and allow yourself to express whatever feelings it brings up,” advises Dr Ben-Ari. “Really listen to them and validate their point of view. You don’t have to agree with them, but the act of acknowledging the situation from their perspective and telling them that they make sense, may offer them the support they need.” As Jemma wisely counsels: “Talk to your partner – talk, talk, talk – and make sure neither of you are feeling unheard. As the prospect of having to change our plans rapidly came into view, we were both very open about what we wanted and how we should proceed,” she says. “The openness of our communication and how we easily agreed on the same plan showed how well we know each other. Going through all this with Tom has only reaffirmed how good we are together.” Dr Ben-Ari encourages couples facing adversity to be as communicative and as flexible as possible with each other, their ideas and – most importantly – their approach. “Put your energy and awareness into the areas where you do have control: how you relate to each other, how you support each other, how you can create connection and intimacy, how you raise each other up,” she says. “Try to change your mindset to lightness and a sense of humour, and look for the positives – you now have time to plan more little details for your special day. Maybe

make a fun movie about both of you to screen at the wedding or learn an impressive first dance to perform in front of your guests. See the extra time as an opportunity to be super creative.”

Look after yourself

If you’re newly engaged and don’t know what to do, start looking around at your options. Just have it in the back of your mind

Don’t forget that self-care is just as important as supporting one another, and it

that things could change. Have a Plan B date pencilled in until

in different ways to particular thoughts. Your inner voice might be telling you: ‘This

Morwenna

is a disaster and I don’t know how to handle this,’ or: ‘This is not what I wanted, but I’m pleased that we have more time to plan.’ It’s easy to feel like you don’t have any control over what’s happened as a result of the pandemic, but you have the power to control your reaction and change your mindset.”

I think the bottom line with this is that you have to make the decisions together as a couple. Don’t let anyone say you should

and accept your differences. “Be mindful that your partner may have a different kind

Jemma

of coping mechanism than yours,” cautions Dr Ben-Ari. “Some cope by distracting themselves from the issue, distancing themselves or withdrawing completely. Reach out with tenderness, compassion and love, and express yourself and what you need to feel supported non-judgementally, safely and openly.” She suggests telling your partner how you’re feeling using positive words. For example, instead of saying: “You don’t understand me,” say: “I feel upset and lonely today. I need to tell you how I’m feeling, and it will be helpful if you can just listen.” As we all know, life and loss can go hand in hand, and whether it’s a minor loss

If you’re struggling with postponements, take that time away from your phone, and have a good cry, a takeaway and spend time with your partner. Ultimately, that’s what it’s all about anyway. Take the time to heal away from prying eyes and then power on like the strong person you are. Morwenna

like the live band you’d set your heart on or a major one like the sudden death of a beloved, each prompts us to see everything exactly as it is and to allow space for our grief and gratitude in equal measure. Many couples are in the same situation, so find a social group “You will get married, even if it is not at the time you had originally planned or wanted,

VOICE OF THE SEA

Taking the ocean as their muse, Harriet and Shash’s gorgeously pared-back day was full of delights as they celebrated with good food, good company and stirring sea views “Shash and I met at medical school and were really good friends before we both finally admitted we liked each other just a little bit more! A few house parties, a little bit of courage and many amazing years later, here we are,” says Harriet, reflecting on their love story. How the couple became engaged is another tale of fortuitous timing and circumstance. “A beautiful blustery Devon day, picnic and champagne in the sand dunes on Saunton Beach, not another soul in sight: the most perfect proposal ever,” is Harriet’s swoonworthy snapshot of the event. Chalet Saunton was the sentimental venue of choice for their “voice of the sea” celebrations, a “minimalist coastal chic” inspired day that took its cue from the sprawling seascapes of their beautiful beachside location. Every element of the décor and design fell in line with the natural and coastal look, from the wild bouquets of gypsophila clouds to the minimalist tablescapes adorned with single stem vases, tapered candles in individual votives, clear glassware and sand-coloured linens. Having readied themselves for the day ahead, Harriet and Shash stole a secret glance of each other before their ceremony, which made for one of the highlights of the wedding. “Shash and I had never heard of this but due to uncertainty on restrictions and mask wearing, we decided to plan for a first look outside our church,” reveals Harriet. “We were so glad we did this and would recommend it to any couple. Our florist made a stunning asymmetrical floral arch in the gorgeous church grounds where it took place. It was truly such a special, intimate and emotional moment between Shash and I. We were so happy to see each other and it immediately put us both at ease before the ceremony.” The couple were wed at the picturesque church in Pilton, which included a tearinducing rendition of ‘You Raise Me Up’ by one of their close friends, after which they headed off for photos at Saunton Sands. Returning to Chalet Saunton, a mouth-watering mix of canapés did the rounds ahead of a spectacular tasting menu that featured the likes of oysters, mackerel ceviche, cauliflower pakora, scallops, pink aged Dexter beef and rhubarb and rose water marshmallows. “Everything was locally sourced and all veg was grown in our own ‘Harriet & Shash’ veg patch by Sam at Eat Nice Be Nice,” adds Harriet. The only downside to the day was that Shash’s best man couldn’t attend from Canada due to Covid travel restrictions, but even that hurdle was successfully overcome. “It was arranged that he would do his speech via Zoom,” says Harriet. “However – much to Shash’s hilarious surprise – his best man had arranged for a life-size cardboard cutout of himself to be there at the reception in his absence!” The key to achieving such a successful wedding is, in Harriet’s opinion, a joyfilled and flexible approach. “Embrace and enjoy the planning process, and no matter what obstacles the current world throws at you, don’t let them get in your way,” she enthuses. “Remember, no matter what happens, you will undoubtedly have the best day of your lives,” she reminds couples of the importance of keeping a positive mindset – and enlisting as much help as possible. “For us, none of this would have been possible without our amazing wedding planner Rebecca.”

INTO THE WOODS

Steph and Morgan’s wildly beautiful wedding took them from a Devon woodland to the Scottish Highlands “We met online when we were both living in Scotland,” says Steph of her and Morgan’s first encounter. “Our first date was a walk on Broughty Ferry Beach with a stop at the pub.” Having made Steph’s engagement ring himself, Morgan proposed while they were walking across one of his favourite childhood haunts of South Beach in Studland. “It was dusk, there was nobody else around and we were surrounded by oystercatchers,” reminisces Steph of the magical moment. The couple enjoyed a woodland ceremony and celebrations with family and friends at the 16th-century rustic estate of Middle Coombe Farm in Tiverton before being legally wed in the Scottish wilds amongst the Cairngorm mountains of Beinn Bhreac. Eschewing a specific colour scheme in favour of using their own “lives and loves” as inspiration, Steph and Morgan also drew upon their idyllic country surrounds in order to style their day. “We kept things as simple as possible, using the beauty of the venue to guide us,” explains Steph. “Everything was natural and we used foraged materials as decorations too.” Keen to minimalise waste and design a sustainable day, e-invites were sent to guests while Morgan made place settings using foraged dead wood and a burning tool, and handwrote the table plans. Then there were the wedding outfits, which were personalised by Steph’s mum who altered the dress by adding a blue underlay beneath the champagne lace top, and handmade Morgan’s waistcoat. “We were barefoot throughout,” adds Steph of their minimalist dress code, which featured just one accessory: Steph’s beautiful silk flower crown. The floristry was another key element that helped create the look while also ensuring a bespoke and eco-friendly factor. “I picked most of the flowers and grasses and dried them myself during the year before the wedding,” says Steph. “We then added some fresh flowers from the meadow in Middle Coombe, and there were also some dried flowers from my late nana’s garden.” When asked to reveal her favourite moment from the day, Steph announces: “Walking down the grassy aisle to Morgan playing the ukulele,” whereupon she met her groom for a celebrant-led ceremony in the woodland, followed by the speeches and toasts. “We then chilled out in the meadow with drinks and games before the hog roast,” says Steph. “At dusk we all gathered around the fire with marshmallows to toast, while guests played instruments.” In keeping with the carefree vibe of the day, Steph’s advice follows the same relaxed tone. “Keep it chilled and remember it is your day, so make sure you ‘do you’,” she says.

GARDEN PARTY

Kate and Mike’s wedding had all the hallmarks of an English country garden wedding – stunning surrounds, fabulous flowers and G&Ts in the sun Kate and Mike met while working as physiotherapists at Derriford Hospital. “Our good friend discreetly set us up after a work party,” smiles Kate. Shortly afterwards, she moved to the French Alps for a ski season while Mike decamped to Kenya to train as part of his running career. “We both left with the intention of keeping things casual while we were away but, after a few months of speaking every day, we soon realised it was more than that. On our return to the UK it wasn’t long until we were pretty loved up!” she confesses. Armed with a beautiful blue sapphire, Mike dropped to one knee in the drizzle on a windy winter’s morning while the couple were walking at one of their favourite spots at Jenny Cliff. “Sandwell Manor was the first venue we visited and we loved it straight away,” says Kate. “We just wanted it to feel like the best garden party ever with all our friends and family, and that is exactly what it provided.” They hired the DIY venue for a week, setting everything up from scratch based on their ‘English country garden’ theme. “It was a mammoth task, but it was so lovely to really make it our own,” explains Kate, who picked a lead tone of dusty blue that was carried in an array of details such as the bridal bouquet, bridesmaid dresses, and their self-renovated ‘wedding bike’. In fact, the upcycling of the bike and other props inspired Kate to set up a new venture. “Realising the potential for waste from weddings inspired me to promote wedding recycling of high-quality items, so I have been collecting and upcycling items for hire through The Reloved Wedding Company.” The floristry was another focal point, with Kate’s fresh flower bouquet created to match her preserved flower crown, while a floral gazebo and hanging wisteria added more eyecatching blooms to the scene. Marrying on the lawn under the gazebo, the couple then held a drinks reception at their DIY gin bar, and the wedding breakfast in the newly built pavilion. “Sixteen of us were able to stay for the weekend and make the most of the beautiful grounds which, after the year we have had, was the best way to celebrate with our families,” says Kate of their wonderfully intimate day. “It was the first sunny weekend in weeks so many of our guests spent the afternoon playing croquet on the lawn and sipping G&Ts in the sun,” she reminisces. “I’m actually really glad we only had 30 people because we really felt we had time to chat to everyone and actually relax too!” A feast of sharing platters continued the relaxed family feel, presenting guests with rounds of local, organic and seasonal food decorated with edible flowers, from pork rillette and slowcooked Middle Eastern lamb to rhubarb and custard cheesecake. “My favourite moment of the day was during the wedding breakfast – just stopping for a moment and taking it all in,” says Kate. “Feeling so grateful to be surrounded by all of the people we love, next to my new husband, eating amazing food and thinking: ‘I can’t believe this is my wedding!’” After sundown, a fairy-lit outdoor dance floor kept the party in full swing with a pre-selected playlist. The next day the newly-weds hosted another al fresco garden party for an additional 30 friends who couldn’t make it to the wedding due to Covid restrictions. “My top tip would be don’t ever lose sight of why you’re doing this,” says Kate. “It’s so easy to get lost in the stress of the money, family politics and endless to-do lists, but as my husband frequently said to me: ‘As long as you’re there with me, nothing else matters.’ There will always be distractions, trials and tribulations that will pose a challenge, but just remember – love really does conquer all.”

COUNTRY GARDEN DREAMS

Dipty and Ryan’s wedding was full of flavour, culture and thoughtful details that brought all their loved ones together Dipty agreed to a date with Ryan on the second occasion their paths collided at a Torquay bar. Having initially turned down his offer for drinks when they first met, Ryan’s persistence paid off. “And the rest is history!” laughs Dipty. Having won her and the whole family over, it was following a family barbecue at their home in Torquay when Ryan dropped to one knee as the sun set over Torre Abbey Sands. “Two quirky personalities teamed with our passion for the sea – there was no better place than Torre Abbey,” explains Dipty of their instant venue choice. “The beauty of our venue being so local to us is that we can see the Spanish Barn from our bedroom window – something very special to us.” Their ‘east meets west’ wedding took place in several parts, firstly with a Hindu wedding ceremony in the 16th century Spanish Barn followed by an intimate civil ceremony in the grounds surrounding the Palm House. “It was important for us to reflect both cultures throughout the day,” says Dipty. “For the Hindu ceremony, there was a heavy presence of ‘English country garden’ throughout the barn.” Handmade crates and chimney pots were filled with Devon grown flowers, while the mandap was covered in blooms including clematis, peonies, magnolia tuberose, eryngium and astilbe. “Breaking tradition of a sit-down Gujarati meal in the afternoon, we wanted to pay homage to Devon and opted for a High Chai. This consisted of traditional vegetarian Gujarati tapas-type dishes of chilli cassava, tikki channa and spiced vegetable croquets,” says Dipty of the garden celebrations that also featured an acoustic guitarist, thirst quenchers of Pimm’s and Cobra beer, and cocktails. “Of course, our High Chai had to end with scones, oodles of clotted cream and raspberry jam!” The feast continued with charcoal lamb kebabs and yogurt chicken skewers served in sizzling platters and mini tandoor ovens alongside vegetable cutlets, Amritsari fish pakora, lamb kharai and paneer jalfrezi. “Selfishly, the sweet was my childhood favourite, which was pistachio kulfi and gulab jaman!” adds Dipty. The scene was a feast for all the senses, while recalling the presence of a very special and sorely missed person, since Ryan’s father sadly passed away shortly before the wedding, prompting the couple to honour him in their own heartfelt way. “Dennis was always partial to a white wine spritzer,” says Dipty. “So we filled miniature bottles with his favourite drink and attached a photo of Ryan and Dennis to each of them. They were placed to the right of Ryan and myself, and each guest – just like Dennis should have been.” After an emotional round of speeches, guests returned to the Spanish Barn for the evening to see it transformed into a fresh celebratory space awash with blue and grey accented with gold. The floral elements were rearranged to create a whole new setup, including their bar – a vintage Citroen truck – which was surrounded by the flower-filled chimney pots. “Then… a rave!” announces Dipty of what came next. “Following our first dance to Michael Jackson’s ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’, our DJ was instructed to mash up Bollywood anthems with old-school Ministry of Sound classics!” The evening ended with vodka jelly shots and glow sticks, leaving Dipty and Ryan to look back at their day – and the journey that brought them there. “Having to wait an extra 11 months, battling a pandemic, dealing with the death of a loved one and rearranging our wedding date twice makes you realise that fussing on the small things is completely irrelevant. Ultimately, your wedding day is a union of two souls,” says Dipty. “Check in with each other during the whole planning process,” she adds by word of advice. “Every single detail of the day can consume you; don’t forget about why you both have chosen to get married.”

AT FIRST GLANCE

Sarah and Kat’s wedding was bursting with colour, personality and love It was an instant connection for Sarah and Kat when their paths first crossed during a night out in Soho. “We talked for hours about our travels around the world, laughed a lot and went through quite a lot of gin!” laughs Sarah. “Two years later at the top of Mount Batur in Bali at sunrise, Kat asked me to marry her, and of course I said yes. What she didn’t know is that I had also bought a ring for her and planned a surprise proposal for when we got back, with all our friends and family in Brighton!” Ash Barton Estate was the venue of choice for their “camp and colourful” celebrations, which featured a lovingly collaborative effort from family and friends. Kat’s hair stylist dad worked his professional magic, while the couple’s friend Jack created their dried bouquets. Sarah and Kat broke with tradition with the help of their photographer Laura to have a ‘first look’ at each other in their dresses before travelling to Ash Barton together. “We wanted to have a quiet moment together before actually tying the knot,” reflects Kat. “Another favourite moment for me was when my dad and brother surprised me by wearing rainbow ties,” Sarah reveals. “I didn’t know, but they had asked Kat the day before the wedding if she thought I’d like it.” The marriage service took place in the old chapel, from which one particularly fond memory lingers. “Caleb, our amazing pageboy, giving us our wedding rings during the ceremony was incredibly special for us. He had been practising for weeks beforehand to make sure he gave us the right ones!” says Kat. “He did so well for a two-year-old!” Afternoon tea included an assortment of cakes and cocktails as the couple’s 30 guests mingled and played garden games. “We were able to sneak off to the beach to capture some unique photos and have a moment away from the party!” adds Kat. Catering was a casual affair comprising fish and chips rounded off by DIY ice cream sundaes all served from mobile food van, The Whiddon Wagon. Bellies suitably filled, it was then time for the speeches. “Our dads’ speeches made everyone cry,” says Sarah. “Hearing both of them reflect on our journey as a couple and how proud they were of us was so special; and hearing Kat’s father talk about how she has taught him that love has no gender was a moment that will be with us forever… Then we danced until midnight with our favourite people!” she says of the evening’s shenanigans, which played out against a personalised Spotify soundtrack. Looking back, Sarah is armed with plenty of advice for other couples keen to achieve a day like theirs. “Once you have the venue, everything else falls into place, so start there,” she says. “If you can hire a wedding planner, they are invaluable and can help you bring your vision to life. They will also manage your day, and problemsolve if there is anything wrong, so you don’t have to know about it! And get help from your friends and family – do they have any special skills that could contribute to your day to make it really personal?” she suggests. “Have a vision but be adaptable – you never know what is around the corner and fitting everything into such tight restrictions is hard!”

NATURE’S FINEST

A picturesque proposal led to an equally idyllic wedding in the sunshine at Harefield Barn for Gemma and Jack Set up on a post-rugby match date by colleagues, Gemma and Jack’s relationship status switched from happy singletons to officially betrothed at Paschoe House. “Jack asked me to go in front of the outside fountain for a picture, I walked and turned around and he was there on one knee!” reminisces Gemma of her perfectly timed proposal. Choosing the idyllic rural climes of Harefield Barn for their naturally styled wedding, the couple designed their celebrations around a white and green palette whose tone was set by the floristry featuring white spray roses, gypsophila and eucalyptus. “Our inspiration was mainly found on Pinterest and stealing a few ideas from the many weddings we’ve attended over the last few years!” confesses Gemma. Every element from the self-created stationery to the acoustic entertainment was carefully planned, but on the day one last-minute hitch occurred just as the bride was about to make her grand entrance. “Ten minutes before I was about to turn up, Jack realised that the tables hadn’t been set with crockery, cutlery and glasses!” reveals Gemma. “So he summoned his friends to get up from their seats at the ceremony and give him a hand setting the tables. He asked all the guests to keep it a secret from me, as it was one of the things he was supposed to do! His friends were great and worked hard together to make sure everything was perfect before I arrived, even if it was just moments before!” The rest of the day panned out seamlessly: After marrying beneath the Clock Tower overlooking miles of rolling hills, everyone enjoyed mingling in the sunshine before taking their seats in the Main Hall for the wedding breakfast. The exotic feast included the likes of Lebanese chicken shawarma, Persian pork belly, aubergine boats, stuffed peppers, Persian lentils, and orzo and giant couscous with lightly pickled vegetables. Food continued to provide another highlight for the couple and guests alike courtesy of the cake – a sumptuous salted caramel, lemon curd and Victoria sponge confection – and later, pizza and ice cream vans presenting even more culinary delights. Suitably refuelled, Gemma and Jack then stole away for one of their favourite parts of the day – some much-treasured together time on a photo shoot as newly-weds. “It was such fun going off in the golf buggy but was a slightly bumpy ride to the point we both almost fell out at one point!” laughs Gemma. “This experience was such great fun and really nice to have time alone together as you get so caught up in the day and catching up with everyone.” “We just loved having all our friends and family there to celebrate our special day,” says Gemma as her most standout memory. “Some of them we hadn’t seen since before the Covid lockdowns and it just made the whole day so special.” When asked to dispense her top advice, she lists three main concerns as those she’d personally prioritise if planning the whole event again: “Explore lots of options before making a decision, have fun and don’t stress!” Echoing a sentiment made by many just-marrieds, Gemma’s final words highlight the importance of taking stock on the day itself. “Make sure you take some time to yourselves during the day and take a step back to enjoy,” she says.

THAT’S AMORE

It wasn’t the day they originally planned, but Charlotte and Nic’s rustic al fresco wedding surpassed their wildest dreams “Nic proposed to me on a skiing holiday in France,” reveals Charlotte, who met her beau at university through the Medics Bouldering Club. “He got down on one knee in the fresh snow on our balcony and asked me to marry him. It was so romantic.” Having originally booked a wedding in Italy, Covid travel restrictions forced the couple to cancel the event just five weeks before the day. However, they remained undeterred in their quest to wed as soon as possible and set about re-planning a whirlwind wedding for the same date. Despite Uphill Farm being booked when they made their initial enquiry, fate intervened when the other wedding was postponed. “It felt like a sign, so I booked having never seen the venue or speaking to Nic about it!” grins Charlotte. “It’s a beautiful walled garden full of roses and flowers with a lovely natural, relaxed, garden party vibe,” explains Charlotte, who didn’t choose an aesthetic as such but says: “I suppose it was slightly Italian themed, but more like a nod to Italy through the food and drink choices rather than a theme.” Selecting a bright colour scheme of coral, orange and pink, the décor was flanked by fabulous floristry in similar hues. “I wanted it to feel like summer even in the UK drizzle,” says Charlotte. A combination of peonies, roses and seasonal wild flowers was central to achieving the “fresh from a hedgerow” look, while the bouquets “all had depth, colour, texture and movement”. The “light-hearted and personal ceremony” was staged under a floral arch and presided over by Charlotte’s uncle, Richard. After confetti under the rose arches, the newly-weds enjoyed antipasti and an Aperol Spritz ahead of some shots with their photographer. “This was one of my favourite parts because we were able to talk to each other properly for the first time all day,” reminisces Charlotte. “The speeches were another of my favourite parts. It was so nice to listen to what our families had to say and for us to be able to say thank you to all our special people for their love and support through a really tough couple of years.” The food – a series of rustic, homemade sharing platters – was one of the day’s most raved-about features, presenting guests with antipasti boards, picanha beef, panzanella, seasonal vegetables and summer fruit pavlova with homemade lemon curd. Later, pizzas freshly cooked from the outdoor oven were devoured as day turned to night. Games, a DJ set and a unique party-starter of sea shanties provided the day’s entertainment, which also afforded Charlotte one of her favourite moments – “when everyone joined in part-way through the song of our first dance”, she announces. “Even the older guests were rocking out to ‘I Believe In a Thing Called Love’ by The Darkness! I was so happy in that moment and you could feel the energy of everyone in the room; all the people we love enjoying themselves and letting go for the first time since the start of the pandemic. It was euphoric!” she says. “Use your friends and family,” she implores other couples in the midst of planning. “They are an amazing source of love, support, knowledge and ideas. We pulled off an amazing day in five weeks and it was because of my friends and family. And try not to get too stressed about the details. We didn’t have the wedding I’d spent a year dreaming about and planning – instead we had something far better with all the people we love. Ultimately, that’s the important part.”

Chilled vibe. Create smaller chill-out areas for people to enjoy but consider how to make them inviting and stunning, from Moroccan low-level lounges to a sunny seated area to make guests feel like they’re in the Balearics. Rebecca Be our guest. Consider the guest experience and in particular their journey. This might mean their literal journey – arranging exciting and unusual guest transportation – or think about the very first touchpoint by sending them a wow-worthy save the date or wedding invitation. And…action! Send a video email to invite guests to your big day. It can be fun to create as well as exciting to receive and watch – you can add full details of the location or even little teasers that you release via email over time. Rebecca Light it up. Carefully considered lighting can transform the whole feeling of a room. I usually recommend a lighting plan that considers the period of day the space will be in use, and makes maximum use of softer background lights, candles, uplighting and task lighting. You might even consider projection mapping onto the side of your venue. Jessica

Raise the bar. There are some amazing mobile bars available which are packed with wow factor. Take a look at the stunning airstream bars from The Buffalo (thebuffalo.co.uk), the rustic and boho bars from The Natural Hire Company (thenaturalhirecompany. co.uk) or the mobile cocktail bars from Artbars (artbars.co.uk) complete with live entertainment including elaborate dancers in a birdcage on top of the bar! Rebecca Green is the new black. Create an impressive setting for your guests by bringing the outside in and filling your venue with greenery from top to bottom, from olive trees to silver birch and citrus plants. Jessica Food glorious food. Think of the food you serve as an experience for guests – for example, canapés can be displayed in creative ways such as fun and beautifully

styled food stations rather than served traditionally. Dessert stations are another opportunity to create a fabulous focal point. Rebecca Venue va-va-voom. With new rules opening up a huge choice of ceremony locations at venues, think outside the box and move away from traditional backdrops – if your chosen venue has something out of the ordinary, like a cliff-top terrace or a woodland glade, hold your ceremony with a jaw-dropping view. Jessica Drag it out. I love a good drag artist and singer, there’s nothing more fun than getting the evening started with some comedy and awesome cheesy music to get people in the mood. Rebecca Drinks with a twist. For an evening bar with a difference, consider ice sculptures as part of a display, perhaps as part of a champagne tower, or even a vodka luge to really get the party started! Jessica Feeling good. If you want the drinks reception to be fun and interactive, consider booking mind readers or lookalikes to walk around. Rebecca Music to their ears. Go all out and hire multiple forms of music – greet your guests at the drinks reception with a steel band or a string quartet, serenade them with roving musicians during dinner, then let them dance the night away with bands and a DJ. You could even have a fireworks display with a live electric string quartet perform synchronised to the illuminations. Jessica Make a scene. Floral installations are amazing, but they don’t have to just be a mass of flowers. Create more of a scene by using interesting shapes, and a mix of dried and fresh flowers. Also think about placement: geometric backdrops work well against a beautiful sea view.
