A
& Q
Wedding
Straight talk, smart solutions by Mary Clarke, Editor in Chief
Q A
Should my four-year-old flower girl sit at the head table with the rest of the wedding party?
Considering how young most flower girls and ring bearers are (usually ages four through eight), I’d recommend seating them with their parents. The little ones will be more comfortable with this arrangement and you won’t have to worry about a bored or fussy child at your table. If you’re planning to invite a lot of children to the wedding, you might want to have a kids’ table strategically placed near their parents, and your flower girl can sit there. Consider a special childrens’ menu of treats like burger and fries, mac ’n’ cheese and cupcakes and ice cream. Provide crayons and coloring books or other games and toys to keep them happy and busy throughout dinner. More than likely, though, they’ll be out on the dance floor with everyone else dancing the night away!
PHOTO PHOBIA
Q
My parents are divorced and I don’t have a good relationship with my stepmother. Am I obligated to have her in my wedding photos?
A
It’s not necessary to round everyone up for the “one big happy family” shot, but you do need to include your stepmother in some of the wedding photos. Leaving her out will hurt her and your dad’s feelings and further affect your relationship with them for the worse. Meet with your photographer ahead of time to discuss the types of photos you want and which members of your family are to be included. An experienced photographer is sure to have dealt with divorced family
situations and can offer expert advice on how to handle potential problems. For example, have pictures taken of you and your new husband with your mom and dad, and then have additional shots taken of the two of you with your father and stepmother. Your dad will have a keepsake and he and his wife will appreciate your efforts to make her feel a part of the wedding. MISSED MOMENTS
Q
A friend’s mom missed her son’s first dance and the cake cutting and is heartbroken. She was out on a terrace with other guests and was never notified. There was no DJ or MC, but the couple did have a wedding coordinator. Thoughts?
A
So sorry to hear this! We can’t stress enough how important it is for couples to think through the details of their day. Even if they plan on having a small, casual celebration it’s important that family members—especially parents—share in special moments such as first dance, toast and cake cutting. In this case, the couple should have communicated clear instructions to their coordinator—but as a professional planner, she should have known to make an announcement that the first dance and cake cutting were about to begin. CONTRACT CLUES
Q
A recently married friend is super upset with some of her vendors: Her florist didn’t make enough boutonnieres and the band took too many breaks. How do I make sure this doesn’t happen to me?
A
The best way to avoid such mishaps is to always (always!) check references and make sure you have detailed contracts. Before you sign on the dotted line, do some research to see if a company/vendor has a history of consumer complaints or negative online comments. As for the contract, insist that everything you discuss with the vendor is put in writing to safeguard against empty promises and hidden fees. You’ll want to spell out the specifics, such as the number of floral arrangements, bouquets and boutonnieres needed and how many breaks a band takes along with the length of time. Never pay anything—not even a small deposit—without first signing a contract that includes all parts of the agreement including the services that will be provided, the dates of service, the method of payment and the cancellation and refund policies. Make sure the locations and delivery schedules are noted and that all taxes, gratuities and overtime fees are listed. If you’re not 100 percent comfortable with the contract, don’t sign on the spot. A reputable pro won’t pressure you, and if someone does, stay far, far away from that vendor! ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. wrong. If you want to combine your passion for pastels with seasonal colors, I suggest adding a touch of soft browns and creams to the mix—fall-inspired hues that are also a great combination with soft pinks, purples or blues.
Q
I am having two maids of honor. One is awesome, the other not so much. She doesn’t want to help with anything. Even though she claims all is well when I ask her about it, I feel that all is not well. Also, my other girls are becoming annoyed and so am I. Would it be OK to ask her to not be in the wedding? —Liz

A wedding is really no time for drama and an official removal from your bridal party will certainly spur that on. And, though this is your special time— you never know what could be the root of the problem. I would start by scaling back on her future involvement and focusing your attention instead on the happy bridesmaids—and on what really matters: your marriage. If the situation doesn’t get better,
Q
My bridesmaids have wildly differing body types. Is it okay if everyone is wearing a different dress? —April
A
Absolutely! At the end of the big day, you want your girls to look great. Work on finding a dress that works for them all by choosing different styles but keeping the color and fabric consistent. This is your supporting cast, and you need them to look and feel amazing.
Q
How do I choose between family (and future in-law) members and friends for my bridal party? I have so many in both groups! —Carla
A
Having too many candidates for a bridal party is actually a great problem to have! I’d say to go with your heart and choose the friends and family members that have known you the longest, or those whom you are closest with. No one can argue this decision. As well, you might want to add a special note in your program thanking all of your family and friends for being a part of your very special day.
YOU NEED YOUR SUPPORTING CAST TO LOOK AND FEEL AMAZING, SO GO WITH ’MAID DRESSES IN DIFFERENT STYLES, KEEPING THE FABRIC AND COLOR CONSISTENT.

’MAID MATTERS
Of course it’s OK! Bridesmaids should be unified in some way—and with more and more brides choosing coordinating dresses instead of matching—a lip color is a great way to do this. It’s also a lot more cost effective than requiring all your ladies to get a full head of hair extensions! I would even suggest purchasing tubes for each girl and slipping them into a chic little lipstick case for a great keepsake and thoughtful thank-you gift. When purchasing your shade just try to pick a tone and texture that flatters the group’s skin shades—such as a classic red.

• “Some couples are looking for multi-day celebrations,” says Jove Meyer, owner/ creative director of Brooklyn-based Jove Meyer Events. “They’re at a location with accommodations and activities for all to enjoy over a weekend or midweek celebration. Others have decided to have smaller wedding ceremonies at home or at their city hall and then have a party on a different day—or not at all. This past year has shown that weddings can really vary, and it is fantastic to see people celebrating authentically and in different ways! ” • “We are seeing couples opt for lower guest counts, and as a result are spending more on a cost-per-person rate than in the past,” says Shannon Ducker, founder and owner of Shannon Rose Events in Dallas Fort Worth TX. “Our average wedding in 2019 had 250 guests; for 2021 and 2022 the average is now 100 guests. A lot of our couples are choosing to have their wedding on their family property, which allows for an even more intimate experience.” • “Couples are ready to party!” says Abi Littles, founder and owner of Weddings by Abi & Co. in Tampa, FL and Nashville, TN. “Prior to the pandemic, couples would invite guests with the expectation that only about 75% would attend. Not anymore. People are eager and willing to travel, so I advise my couples to be more intentional with their guest lists, now that things are opening back up.”
the great outdoors
• “We are seeing a huge increase in popularity for outdoor celebrations held in open spaces like parks, private estates, courtyards and more,” notes Tyler Speier of Tyler Speier Events in Santa Barbara, CA. “Guests seem to feel more safe outdoors, and couples want their guests to feel comfortable!” • “Outdoor spaces have always been in demand,” says Meyer. “But with the pandemic, they have become the most popular option, as they allow for fresh air and greater peace of mind for health and safety while celebrating.” • Shannon Ducker concurs. “The majority of our couples prefer their wedding to be held outside, especially in a tent, since it is essentially a blank canvas,” she says. “We are finding our couples want to put as much of their story into their wedding as possible, and a tented ceremony or reception is the perfect opportunity to do so, since there are almost no limitations on design and capacity.” • “Outdoor spaces allow you to transform the space into what you want, whereas ballrooms typically confine you to walls and what is and is not allowed,” says Betsy Krug, event director and co-owner of Rebecca Rose Events, Winston-Salem, NC. “To bring the outdoors in, look for venues with abundant natural light coming in from the windows and doors,” she counsels.
“Flowers have become a huge priority, and we are seeing couples invest more and more into floral installations to wow their guests.”—Tyler Speier

“Fun is trending! After all that time spent away from friends and family, living and working on screens, couples want to guarantee their wedding will be a FUN celebration of JOY!”—Jove Meyer A colorful moment from Tyler Speier Events.

• “We are leaning into bold, beautiful color in fun ways,” Meyer enthuses. “Couples want to have fun, and color imbues fun into every aspect of the wedding, from stationery, wardrobe and flowers to rentals and food.” • Tyler Speier is on the same page. “What we all need right now is lots of joy! Think vibrant flowers, patterned linens, romantic watercolor accens...all the fun, colorful details!” • “The sky’s the limit, agrees Becca Atchinson, founding partner and creative director of Rebecca Rose Events, particularly in tabletop decor. “Tinted glassware, textural layers and colorful pattern blending have been trending.” • “Lighting is key at a wedding,” says Meyer. “It can create atmospheres and also highlight special moments and/or features.” • Sneh Diwan founder and owner of Diwan by Design based in Jersey City, NJ, sees taper candles having a moment. “They give the room an almost Bridgerton vibe.” • “Hanging light fixtures are also trending. “Lighting is one of the details that makes the biggest impact, from mingling to dinner to dancing,” says Kayla Gantzer, of Southern House Events in Charleston, SC. “Couples are loving a statment piece over the dance floor or even guest tables.” • When it comes to invites, after month after month of digital save-the-dates, invitations and rescheduling, “There has been a definite return to a preference for good old-fashioned mail,” says Atchison. • Meyer sees couples looking to stationery that represents who they really are. “Stationers are working beyond just paper, working with wood, acrylic, metal and other materials that elevate their craft and the wedding experience for couples and guests alike.” • “Is there an “it” flower? “It seems everyone is loving white more and more, expecially white roses,” says Sandra de Ovando, founder and creative director of Ovando Event Design in NYC, Southampton, NY, Palm Beach and Miami, FL. • White double oriental lilies are also coming into demand, according to Eva Vessio, creative director of Blondie’s Treehouse in NYC. The appeal lies in the flower’s “Uniqueness, luxurious aspect and fragrance.” • According to Diwan, “Orchids are coming back in a big way, from the voluptuous to tiny, delicate blooms. And not just in classic white— ➺

We’re seeing vivid colors such as yellow and pink.” • Both Vessio and de Ovando sing the praises of carnations. Celebrated as the “flower of love,” the simple blossom is heaven-sent for budget-conscious couples. Often less than a dollar a stem, carnations are not only affordable, but “abundant, fragrant and colorful,” says de Ovando. • “I always recommend blooming plants,” de Ovando says. “They provide abundance and color, and they can be used both at the event itself and as parting gifts.”
• Live music performances are happening! Jove Meyer notes: “Classical strings playing pop tunes are on the rise—thank you, Bridgerton!—and are playing for ceremony, cocktail hour and dinner.” • “We enjoy placing different groups or music options throughout the party to engage guests and help with the flow of the event,” says Betsy Krug. “We might program string musicians for the ceremony, contemporary music for cocktail hour and an incredible vocal with instrumentation for dinner. Once First dance! it’s time for the dance party, a full band or DJ is ideal!” • Not everyone is ready for the return to a packed dance floor. “These couples are extending cocktail hour and dinner, and adding other activities for guests to enjoy,” says Meyer. “From photo booths to artists, mixologists, sundae bars, games and/or musical performances, there are many ways to fill the event with fun!” • Kayla Gantzer is thrilled to see “...couples go all out with fun interactive experiences in lieu of packed dance floors. They’re including everything from professional fire breathers and dancers to customized ‘couple’ trivia game shows. I’m also seeing more and more couples opt for choreographed first dances that really play to the guests to get them laughing and clapping along.”
food and drink
Top shelf: a stellar lineup.
• Covid safety continues to be top of mind. “Chefs and caterers are covering meals to add an extra layer of safety,” says AJ Williams, founder and creative director of AJ Events based in Boston and the greater New England area. AJ’s favorite culinary accessory: the glass cloche, a dome-shaped covering for a meal that’s removed before serving. “We love using them, as they are statement pieces that add a wow factor to the dining experience.” • “French service is on the rise,” says Meyer. “As guests are served by a server with gloves and a mask, it is a safer way to go than true family style, but it feels just as special and communal.” • AJ Williams loves “...a cocktail hour alternative that is not only Covid-friendly, but memorable for your guests: roaming food carts for serving creative hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Guests won’t have to line up at a buffet or bar: everything comes to them.” • The “mocktail’ is squarely in the spotlight. Jove Meyer is delighted that “...couples are including mocktails in their bar packages, so all guests can drink and feel special, not just those who drink alcohol. The specialty drink game has been elevated, with fun twists from pictures of the couple floating on top of the drinks and edible bubbles, to floral ice cubes and/or flaming or smoking drinks.” Botanical-infused cocktails • “Couples still want wedding cakes,” Jove conand mocktails. tinues. “But some are also exploring cheesecakes, >> BRIDALGUIDE.COM Find picture-perfect ideas for every part of your wedding day at bridalguide.com/thedetails

Cake artists are upping the game, making magic with sugar flowers, hand-painted moments and stunning details!” • Michelle Cousins has a different take. “Cake is low on the priority list for many of our clients. Most are opting for a variety of desserts ranging from savory to sweet, and putting a bigger emphasis on late-night snacks than wedding cake.” • Sneh Diwan sees it both ways. “Couples are less inclined to do a cake unless the venue offers it. They might want a cake for a photo op, but tiny desserts are preferred. That said, there is a trend for naked cakes with fresh flowers or gradients in color or with more textured details, like ruffles, so that the cakes have In-season, local fare more dimension.” ¢ is in demand.

the first return on your investment, when the decisions, money, emails, and aggravation culminate in something concrete. You don’t just taste the hors d’oeuvres, you taste the fruits of your labor. • Read the fine print. BUDGET BLUNDERS 1 2 AVOID THESE COMMON WEDDING-SPENDING PITFALLS WITH OUR SPOT-ON SOLUTIONS.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, you don’t want to think priorities; you want to revel in dreams! Sorry, sister—if you don’t wake up, you’ll become mired in bills without really knowing why (um, who thought the Rolls-Royce rental was a good idea?!). THE SOLUTION: Start with a realistic overall budget (which will involve planning meetings with your fiancé). Then list, in order of “gotta have it,” your wedding details, says Debi Lilly, owner of A Perfect Event, in Chicago and Nantucket. “That way you can put your dollars on the higher priorities, and spend less on what isn’t so important.” One example: A foodie couple might prefer to host a fabulous dinner for 50 that includes wonderful wine, whereas a couple who loves a party might invite 100 or more for a simple buffet and splurge on a hot band.
NOT READING THE FINE PRINT
Don’t skip reading anything, and if you have questions—no matter how seemingly insignificant—ask immediately. This is extra critical when it comes to clarifying payment terms. You want to know exactly when payments or balances are due; if there are any minimum charges, corkage fees for wine, cake-cutting fees—or any other possibly pricey unknowns. If your wedding is a year or more away, be sure to block in guaranteed prices on catering and liquor. THE SOLUTION: Never ever sign any contract on the spot; always take it home and read over everything, making note of any and all questions and concerns. If a vendor pressures you to sign, take that as your cue to move on to the next vendor. Nothing is so urgent that it can’t wait at least overnight.

NOT SETTING BUDGET PRIORITIES
3
LEAPING BEFORE YOU LOOK
You walk into the first reception venue on your list, fall in love and reach for the pen to write a deposit check. Sometimes that works fine. Other times, it doesn’t. A week later, you may hear about a place that costs less and offers more services. Then you have to cut from your budget in other areas. THE SOLUTION: Spend some time investigating. If you’re the spreadsheet type, go ahead and plug in details— cost, services, extras, terms—for every vendor you consider. Even if you end up going back to that love-at-firstsight place, you know you did your due diligence.
4
FALLING PREY TO PEER PRESSURE
So you just went to a wedding that featured free-flowing champagne, lobster and filet mignon and a fabulous band. Stop right there—and refuse to try to keep up with those particular Joneses. Why? They may not have actually paid for all those bells and whistles (credit cards, anyone? wealthy parents, perhaps?). And anyway, even if they could afford to pay for every detail themselves, who says that will make them happy? More importantly, who says copying them will make you happy? THE SOLUTION: Repress the urge to impress other people, says Lilly. Imagine that you’re in a safe little bubble, where you’re unaffected by others’ choices. You’ll be more likely to stick to your budget.
5
GETTING STUCK ON “SHOULDS”
You must have pricey favors. You need napkins that match the fancy silk tablecloth overlays that, of course, you must have. But to quote the song, all you really need is love. (And a wedding license, right?) THE SOLUTION: Ask yourself, as you consider every extra detail, whether it will be something you’ll care about in the future. If you’re convinced you’ll be upset to think back on a wedding without a videographer, then by all means hire one. But
if you realize that looking back on a twominute ride in a snazzy car is unlikely to mean much to you, feel free to skip it.
6
NOT KNOWING WHAT YOU BOTH WANT
Ever go food shopping, without a list, when you’ve skipped lunch? You probably spent too much on stuff you didn’t need. Same thing with weddings: When you’re unsure of what you want, you’re susceptible to sales pitches, to vendors pushing for more expensive choices, or to someone who insists you need, say, engraved invites. THE SOLUTION: Figure out what you really—really—must have. After that, financial decisions come easier.
7
9
NOT THINKING CREATIVELY
Let’s say your sister chose to have dozens of long-stemmed red roses in tall crystal vases on every table at her reception. Must you follow suit—especially since you know full well that this option is rather pricey? Maybe it isn’t the best idea. While doing exactly what your sister did may be safe, it probably isn’t economical. THE SOLUTION: Be imaginative. What if, instead of the red roses, you chose local blooms? Or what if you asked a florist to create one centerpiece that you and your friends can use as a template for making the rest yourselves? You’ll save lots on the labor that the florist would have to put in.
LETTING YOUR GUEST LIST GET THE BEST OF YOU
You may feel you’re being generous when you extend the invite to your entire office or to peripheral plus-ones, but you won’t feel quite so expansive when you’ve strained your budget to the breaking point. THE SOLUTION: Start by figuring out how many guests you can actually afford. Then make your initial “A” list, dividing it into columns detailing your own guests, your groom’s and your parents’. Now comes the hard part, where you have everyone chop names from their “A” lists to create a “B” list. Make sure to order extra invitations and reply cards and send these after the initial RSVPs come in and you know you’ll have space for some of the “B” listers. You may be able to invite a few people that you cut from the original list—without breaking the budget.
8
STUFFING YOUR GUESTS
We get it: You’re so afraid that your wedding will be the one where guests go home hungry or unhappy that you overorder food or try to dazzle everyone with a seven-course dinner extravaganza rather than a more modest but perfectly adequate two. Rest assured, no one at your wedding will starve: “A reputable catering company will never underestimate how much food you’ll need,” says Lilly. And keep in mind that the more menu choices you offer, the higher the cost. THE SOLUTION: “Always be sure to tell your caterer what your budget is, and what kinds of food you want to include in the meal, and then let her work her magic within the parameters you give her,” says Lilly. “Remember, you’re paying for the wealth of her expertise, so trust her to do the job right!”

TRYING TO DO IT ALL
Attempting to handle every last detail yourself can end up costing you because you simply don’t have time to research the most economical choices. THE SOLUTION: Enlist help. Though wedding planners come with their own costs, hiring one might save you money. Another way to share the work and save money? Delegate jobs to friends and family—you may be surprised at the fine options they come up with. Also, many brides who have talented friends ask for their help with decorating, invitations or flowers. People are usually happy to pitch in and contribute to the success of a friend’s big day. n

T
he date was set: April 2020 in Puerto Vallarta… “and then Covid happened,” says Dana. The couple rescheduled for October and swapped Mexico for Landrum, South Carolina. “We wanted to pick a venue that would still be a destination but also within driving distance for our families and friends, most of whom are on the East Coast,” the couple says. Fifty guests gathered to celebrate Dana and Daniel’s nuptials at The Cliffs Chapel, followed by a reception at a private home nearby. The wedding color palette, inspired by dreamy Mexican sunsets, made a seamless transition to South Carolina. Closer to home, the wedding photographer was a friend of the bride, and the ceremony pastor was Dana’s high school youth pastor. “It was really fun to have him come into our lives years later.”

As well, “We hosted our bachelor and bachelorette parties the day of the reheaarsal dinner and had a1 blast!” says Dana. “We ziplined and visited a local winery.” 3. The groom, Daniel, jumps for joy. 4. The ceremony at the Cliffs Chapel was officiated by Dana’s high school youth pastor. 5. Dana and Daniel’s biggest splurges were on outdoor items, like the tent, heater, reception tables and seating, and lighting.
1. Flowers were “simple and pastel,” Dana says, featuring pinks, whites and dusty greens. Lanterns and candles provided a steady, romantic glow throughout the celebration. 2. The bride’s bouquet included quicksand roses, ranunculus, ivory spray roses, English stock, astilbe and dusty miller. 3. A chiaroscuro moment. 4. ARTFUL STAYS
THESE STYLISH HOTELS SHOWCASE UNBEATABLE ART IN THEIR HALLWAYS, GUEST ROOMS, GALLERIES AND GARDENS. BY JENNA MAHONEY
The Meridian Colombus, The Joseph
More than 700 works from a jaw-dropping private collection are on display at this hotel set at the crossroads of the Ohioan city’s Short North Arts District. Works, which are exhibited in the common areas, are for the most part contemporary with such names as KAWS, Nari Ward and Dario Escobar. Among the dynamic pieces are 15 lithographs by an Ohioan artist specifically created for the hotel. The property’s spa is another standout amenity with holistic treatments performed in a luxurious setting (room rates start at $269 a night; lemerediencolumbus.com).
LE NEGRESCO There’s a distinct artfulness that comes with a vacation in the South of France. And a stay at this historic Nice retreat, which has hosted such names as Salvador Dali, Elizabeth Taylor and Princess Grace, is a fantastic way to experience the actual art of this romantic country. Guest rooms and public spaces are all decorated with individual pieces and period furnishings sourced from more than five centuries of France’s history. There are classical, baroque and contemporary works displayed throughout the garden-laden property. The exceptional level suites are most impressive (room rates start at about $531 a night; hotel-negresco-nice.com).
ROSEWOOD HONG KONG Talk about high art—at 65 stories,
Damien Hirst’s butterflies decorate an eatery.
this ultra-luxe tower, robust with some of Hong Kong’s largest guest rooms, unparalleled—and jaw-dropping—views and a dizzying amount of sculpture and painting, reaches tall over the glittering and cosmopolitan city/state. The collection here is all about contemporary works that are impactful and impressive. There is a series of butterflies by Damien Hirst, a life-size elephant sculpture by Bharti Kerr and the piece that welcomes guests upon entry, a bronze of a reclining figure by mid-century British artist Henry Moore. And then there are the lithographs showcasing views from the hotel. The food here is equally spectacular (room rates start at about $420 a night; rosewoodresorts.com).

Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay Food here is exceptional. It is, after all, helmed by the world’s preeminent sushi chef for which the intimate, beachfront property is named. Add the farm-to-table element for which the island of Ibiza is celebrated and seasonally rotating top-chef partnerships and you get a food-lovers paradise complete with two quiet pools, an awesome spa and fantastic Old Town views. It’s no wonder the newer-to-the-scene hideaway is so popular. In keeping with the local-flavor tenets, the hotel’s art program is also a showcase of the culture of the island. Resident Balearic artists have works on display throughout the property. The most impressive images are commissioned oversized photographs of scenes throughout Ibiza, neighboring islands and the property itself (room rates start at about $440 a night; nobuhotelibizabay.com).
If, based on its name, you were expecting a spectacularly curated collection of modern and contemporary works by art experts and preservationists, you’d be right. One of 11 hotels in this art-first chainlet of boutique properties, this 88-room retreat in a refurbished bank building in charming Lexington, Kentucky, home to the famed Keeneland Racetrack, exemplifies the ethos of the brand. There are site-specific commissioned works and an enormous gallery/museum space with rotating exhibitions (room rates start at $249 a night; 21cmuseumhotels.com). o

Home to Big Tex and the State Fair of Texas, the Dallas Cowboys and the grassy knoll, the city of Dallas also boasts the country’s longest (geographically) continuous arts district. The robust urban area encompasses renowned opera and ballet companies and many museums with collections spanning the ancient world to living artists. In the center of it stands this 183-room hotel where art and its display are embedded in the property’s DNA. In fact, a portion of the collection, which is heavy on diverse and emerging talents, was curated in collaboration with the U.S. Department of State’s Arts in Embassies program (room rates start at $409 a night; hallartshotel.com). ¢
FUN FACT: There are six kinds of arts districts in the U.S., according to the advocacy organization Americans for the Arts. The oldest began in cities prior to the 1930s and are called cultural compounds.

THIS COLORFUL HIDEAWAY IN AN UNLIKELY SPOT PLAYED HOST TO A CREATIVE COUPLE’S MICRO WEDDING.
VINTAGE VIBES, A RICH COLOR STORY AND A WHOLE LOT OF VISUAL QUIRKINESS INFLUENCED
Aditi and Dane Heins to use the charming Bradford House in Oklahoma City as home base for their hyperlocal micro-wedding celebration. “My husband and I are both fans of Wes Anderson and especially Grand Budapest Hotel,” explains Aditi. “The moment I saw the hotel on social media with its historic charm mixed with a Wes Anderson-like colorful aesthetic, I knew I had to get some of my wedding photos taken there,” she explains. The creative couple (she’s an art director; he’s a musician and the owner of a creative and marketing agency) bookended their Big Day with a stay at the boutique hotel that also proved to be honeymoon-perfect in the pampering department.

Family Affair
Dane and Aditi not only celebrated with their nearest and dearest, they used the wedding as a time to showcase family members. The couple included Dane’s son in the marriage vows they each wrote. And the floral design and cake were created by the groom’s grandmother and mother, respectively. “My husband’s grandmother had a big hand in his upbringing, so we thought it would be an honor for us to have her expertise with the flowers.” To honor Aditi’s late mother, the bride incorporated elements of her mom’s wedding henna into her own. “Since I’m from Mumbai, India, I had a henna ceremony,” she says. “I also wore a traditional Indian lehenga as my wedding dress.” “Even though the ceremony was American, I walked down the aisle to a Hindi song.”
Aditi designed the invitations.
Her something old was an heirloom coin purse from the 1920s that once belonged to Dane’s great grandmother.

in full bloom
The spectacular and equally photogenic Will Rogers Gardens, an expanse of 30 acres of splendid foliage, is located just 10 minutes from Bradford House. One of the oldest parks in Oklahoma City, the historic property was chartered less than a decade after statehood. Famously home to an arboretum with some trees dating to the 1930s, innumerable raised beds and water features including a pond, and conservatory showcasing cacti and succulents, the garden is also the spot where Aditi and Dane hosted an intimate number of local family members for a ceremony and reception. Visitor programs include horticultural talks, art exhibitions and hands-on landscape and gardening classes.

“One of my happiest moments of the wedding was our wedding dance. We moved to a song Dane and his band The Loose Bends wrote for me for our wedding day. It was perfect!” ➺
REAL DESTINATION WEDDING
The couple toasted to their union in rosy comfort.
SNAP HAPPY “The welcoming hotel is super photogenic and fit my aesthetic very well,” says Aditi. She and Dane had their first look in the green bar and shot many of their wedding photos throughout the boutique property. “The colors, the vibe and the decor are stunning. I couldn’t have picked a better place,” explains Aditi, who especially loved the pink room, which with its jewel-colored accents, coordinated perfectly with her wedding dress.
Traditional touches included a henna ceremony hosted by Aditi’s uncle.

legally wed
Marriage licenses are required to wed in the state of Oklahoma. Couples must apply in person with proof of age. Blood tests and residency are not required. There is no waiting period, unless in some cases of previous divorce. Marriage licenses are $50; and just five dollars if a premarital counseling course is completed.
best brunch
Plush pink banquettes line Bradford House’s all-day restaurant that serves brunch, dinner and afternoon tea. Following their wedding, Dane and Aditi indulged in the comfort-meets-inventive brunch complete with a sparkling toast. “The food and cocktails at Bradford House are exquisite,” they rave. Much of the early-day menu is seasonal with such favorite dishes as avocado toast with bacon lardons, sesame rice bowls and a piquant breakfast sandwich. On weekends, the hotel often hosts local makers for a marketplace. Aditi and Dane strolled among the outposts, marveling at the wares. “There were a bunch of local vendors; I thought it was really cool,” recalls Aditi.

omewhere Over the Rainbow, the lyrical ode to escape and possibility, is something of a theme song for Hawaii. And with good reason. A corner of the Polynesian Triangle—an expanse of island nations and territories across the South Pacific—the Hawaiian archipelago is one of those ultra-romantic, bucket-list destinations that promises all the amenities of happily ever after. The natural appeals are many, from glittering beaches and photogenic coves teeming with colorful fish to surf-worthy waves and tranquil waters that are home to dolphins and (in season), tail-slapping whales—plus active volcanoes, towering mountains and lush “A chartered flight tropical forests, waterfalls a go-go and endless from a private rainbows. Here, they we experienced on share their amazing trip’s highlights. BRIDAL GUIDE: How did you choose Hawaii as your trip-of-a-lifetime destination? MARGAUX LUSHING: We were looking for a honeymoon-worthy destination that wasn’t too far afield, because in summer, 2021, international travel was still pretty much off the table. We wanted a balance of low-key, luxury and an abundance of natural beauty, while feeling far away from home. The Hawaiian islands offer all that along with killer sunset views each day. ➺

REAL DESTINATION HONEYMOONS
The couple take flight on their trip of a lifetime.

BG: Hawaii is a chain of 137 islands, five of which welcome visitors. How did you select among them? ML: Given the state of the world, being easily accessible from LA was key. The Big Island (AKA Hawai’i), which I have visited in the past, is a single, five-hour flight from LAX. Compared to some of the other islands, this one’s less crowded, and there’s a spacious feel. We spent the first half of our trip there, between two resorts, then hopped to Lana’i to spend time at two more properties. We really wanted to find a beautiful beach with great amenities and lots of special-occasion food. Lana’i had been on both of our dream-destination lists. Plus, taking the Four Seasons single-prop charter plane to the tiny island sounded like an adventure in itself. BG: Where did you stay? ML: On the Big Island, we checked into The Fairmont Orchid with gorgeous ocean views and beautiful grounds (room rates start at $679 a night; fairmontorchid. “The idea of soaking com). There, we experienced lomi lomi massages in beautiful sunsets at the resort’s open-air hales (houses) positioned together by the water on the beach with amazing water views. It was was another key. And wonderfully relaxing. Then we stayed at the neighboring The Mauna Lani Resort to experience its every single night we chic renovation, three pools and excellent food. Sensei Lana’i and the beachfront Four Seasons Lana’i (room rates start at $800 a night, two-night minimum and $1,150 a night, respectively; fourseasons.com). It was an unreal experience to be on a beach in Hawaii with so few other guests. Both resorts have Nobu restaurants, which is our go-to for special occasions in LA. At Sensei we were impressed by the rooms with their perfect balance of old Hawaii meets contemporary comfort. The onsen garden and a connected sculpture garden near the yoga pavilion were so romantic, and the pool was stunning and quiet. Aloha in the morning, aboard We enjoyed uncrowded meals next an outrigger canoe. to a koi-filled pond. BG: Did you have a memorable meal? ML: We specifically arranged our itinerary so that we had great meals every day; there was no one favorite. On our final night, we returned from a gorgeous sunset sail and walked right into dinner at Nobu at Four Seasons Lana’i. We just told our server we were vegan and asked her to bring all of the vegan-friendly greatest hits. It was wonderful, classic Nobu dining and such a perfect last dinner. BG: Did you go on excursions? ML: On the Big Island, we soared high above on a helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. It was mind-blowing to fly over the island’s massive active volcanoes and across waterfall-laden valleys. It was spectacular. Another only-in-Hawaii excursion was the sunrise canoe outing suggested by the staff at the Mauna Lani. Honestly, we were not the most enthused about waking up for a 6:30 a.m. canoe departure from the beach. But as soon as we paddled past the protected beach area into the open ocean we were thrilled. We saw a pod of dolphins, and we swam, just as the sun was rising. It was one of the most special experiences of the trip. We loved the sunset sail organized by the beach resort on Lana’i. During the three-hour tour we were the only boat on the water. With Mai Tais in hand, we were able to see the most stunning sunset in every direction. BG: Did you have a favorite snack or treat? ML: At the Mauna Lani I got hooked on the sugar-free, matcha lattes and the ube colada, a decadent spin on the piña colada made with an ube (purple yam) float. I craved both when we left. BG: Have any travel tips? ML: Book everything early! At the Fairmont Orchid, the beach cabanas are a luxury when the sun is high, and we were happy that we had reserved them in advance. Similarly, we arranged our dinners and car rental months ahead. ¢

2022
Dress Shopping in CONGRATS, YOU’RE ENGAGED! You’ve probably been dreaming of this day for a long time—with good reason! There’s no greater feeling than trying on a wedding gown and seeing yourself as a bride for the very first time. While wedding gown shopping in 2022 may look a little different, the experience can still feel just as special as it would have pre-pandemic. Read on for some tips!
COVID-19 Safety
Expect to see hand sanitizer everywhere, bring fewer people to your appointment, and bring a mask! Masks will be worn by all staff in the bridal salon, and are recommended for all brides and guests.
You Can Still Include Friends and Family While brides are limited in the number of guests they can bring with them to their appointments, friends and family can still help you choose “the one.” Bridal consultants are often happy to take photos and set up Zoom appointments so loved ones can come along for the fun.
Communicate with Your Consultant Masks quite literally mask your expressions. A bridal consultant
cannot read your mind, so be vocal about your opinions and tell her if you love a dress or not. You’ll be making both of your jobs easier!
Ask About Delivery Dates If possible, leave plenty of time to shop, and be prepared to say “YES!” if you find a gown you love. Don’t forget to ask your consultant about delivery dates. Due to the pandemic, gowns may have longer turnaround times.
Keep an Open Mind With wedding restrictions changing so frequently, brides may find themselves needing a wedding dress ASAP. Many bridal salons have off-the-rack sections where you can select a gorgeous gown and bring it home the same day.
