A Q Wedding
&
Straight talk, smart solutions by Mary Clarke, Editor in Chief
Q
My partner and I would like to marry at a beach resort next summer. Any tips on colors and flower choices, as well as what we need to consider for our guests? Summer weddings offer a great opportunity to select gorgeous inseason flowers like roses, sunflowers, hydrangeas, daisies, dahlias and zinnias to name a few. There are also fantastic colors and fun decor details to choose from. A nautical theme using navy blue and white is a classic for seaside celebrations, while sunny yellow and coral shades will brighten up any summer reception. Other popular colors include a mix of vivid tropical hues or shades of blue from aqua and sea-foam to turquoise. And all-white weddings with heaps of greenery work any time of the year. Most beach resorts have dedicated wedding coordinators who will help you with your decision making. You’ll be able to choose the colors, table decor and flowers that best suit your style via the wedding packages offered by many resorts. When it comes to your guests, always keep them well-informed. Send out savethe-dates once you know the location and date, look into group rates, create a wedding website and prepare welcome bags that include an itinerary of events and any treats indigenous to the location. If you’re marrying outdoors and the weather will be hot and steamy, be sure to provide guests with cool drinks, bottled water, fans or paper parasols, and always, always have a Plan B—an indoor location — in case there’s bad weather. And don’t forget to pack your own day-of emergency kit that includes blotting tissues, sunscreen and makeup for touch-ups.

TUXEDO TUTORIAL
Q A
I’m confused. What’s the difference between tuxedo, black tie and formal? Good question. Let’s start with “formal,” which dictates a more dressed-up look for both men and women. In other words, men wear tuxedos and women wear a cocktail or longer-length dress. The traditional “tuxedo” is a single- or doublebreasted jacket with satin lapels that’s paired with formal trousers (those with a satin side stripe on the pant legs). You’ll find tuxedos available in a range of colors from white and ivory to navy, grey and black. “Black tie,” used for occasions that start after 6 p.m., dictates that men wear a tuxedo and women a cocktail-style or longer-length dress appropriate for a more formal celebration.
RAISE THE BAR
Q
We’ve heard you can request different types of bar options from your caterer. How many types are there, is there a price difference and what do they offer? The most common bar type is the open bar, which offers a variety of liquor, wine, beer and champagne and is paid for at a flat rate. This would be the most costly. You could save by having a consumption bar: Instead of paying a flat rate you would pay per drink at the end of the festivities. With a soft bar you definitely cut costs since no hard liquor is offered but guests can imbibe on red and white wine, champagne and beer. Another type to consider is the white bar, which features only pale beverages such as white wine, rum, gin and vodka. Costs can vary with this type of bar, depending on your crowd size and the amount of liquor you’d
A
need to provide. A dry bar is for nondrinkers and consists of sodas, juices, tea, etc.—anything non-alcoholic—but we’re guessing your guests will expect some libations. Be sure to cover all the details with your caterer. The service fee/gratuity is usually included in the contract but if not, tip your bartenders 15-20 percent of the final bar bill.
SEND THANKS
Q A
How much time do we have to send out thank-you notes? My fiancé thinks it’s six months. Thank-you notes should be sent within three months of the wedding date, so be sure to acknowledge any gifts you receive before then immediately. That way, you won’t be overwhelmed after the wedding. Plus, your guests will appreciate receiving a thank-you in a timely manner and not six months later. So be sure to put pen to paper soon after you return from the honeymoon and share the writing duties with your partner. You’ll have the task completed in no time!

We’re highlighting four exceptional diamond cuts and shapes that cut (ahem) through the noise from influencers, celebs, and short-lived trends. The Rose, Marquise, Portrait, and Asscher all have storied histories, rooted in innovation, sentimentality, and beauty. Turns out the shape of things to come have been right here all along.

Sometimes there’s no place like home—unless it’s the home of your beloved grandmother, a home filled with countless memories. What better place to create even more joy, was the thinking behind choosing Christina’s abuelita’s waterfront property the wedding venue. The couple and the team at Events by Lindsay J curated the day to include warmth, sophistication, and a touch of holiday glamour (the wedding was held in early December, after all). The jumping-off point: a winter white and forest green color palette.

Setting up took a full week. The pool was covered with a platform to create a dance floor, and a gazebo was converted into a stage for the band. Upon arrival to the cocktail hour, guests were greeted with a glass of holiday champagne with cranberry—for a subtle pop of red. The color made a surprise appearance when the cakes were cut: one cake was cinnamon, the other a vivid red velvet. Rain had originally been forecast for that day, so tents were standing by. With 48 hours to go, the chance of rain had lessened, so Christina and Lindsay threw the dice and made the decision to ditch the 3 tents. The weather gods smiled on the couple, who were able to dance under the stars with their friends and family. 3 Planning: Lindsay Jimison @ventsbylindsayj Florals: @carmen_southtampaflorals Catering: @puffnstuffcatering Cake designer: @handsonsweets Bride’s dress: @moniquelhuillier Band: @thehitfactoryband Linens: @bbjlatavola; @stradleydavidson Rentals: A Chair Affair; @treasuryrentals; @kateryaneventrentals; @tampabaystagingandevents Design: @artistic_spaces_inc Decor: @matteo_woodworking; @ktjanes

co-owners, Cluster Events, Los Angeles, CA
C
Sealed with a kiss.
WHO WE ARE
• “We think the most consistent attribute noted in feedback is our ‘calm, cool, collected,’ dare I say, VIBE. Our couples seem to really appreciate our lack of anxiety on event days and our ability to thrive in any situation.”
A chic suite.
OUR INSPIRATION
• “Honestly, our couples inspire us! We help them create the wedding they imagined or didn’t quite yet imagine. We bring their vision to life by getting to know them as both individuals and as a couple. We want to know what makes them ‘them’.”
IT TAKES TWO
• “Morgan had a background in theater and office coordination prior to launching into planning full time. The stage was where she shined, and she often likens the experience to planning, as the rules of improvisation are similar. You have to be ready, for any changes at any given moment. We can find a solution for anything!” • “I have a background in architecture, which has taught me to look at a project from every single angle. We can quickly go into any space and understand flow, layout, etc. 24 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Mar/Apr 2025

an a beautiful friendship blossom into a lasting, thriving business partnership? Just ask wedding planners Frankie & Morgan extraordinaire Morgan Pine and Frankie Podrat, co-owners of LA-based Cluster Events. “It was kismet!” exclaims Frankie. “Morgan and I had actually been friends for over a decade. We were alongside each other for years as we both ran our respective planning companies, helping each other along the way. We often chatted about coming together as a team, but the timing never really felt right.” That changed with the pandemic. “During COVID we began to explore combining our efforts,” says Frankie. “I need to thrive in a company that is an official ‘We,’ and Morgan agreed (phew!), and we have never looked back!” Here, Frankie takes the lead in sharing the team’s stellar success story.

Take your place.
Feeling the love.
Down the aisle.
Tiers of joy.
Our combined strengths cover all the bases for clients!”
OUR FAVORITE PART OF WEDDING PLANING
• “Morgan LOVES the logistics and seeing things come together on the day. We describe this to our couples as ‘the puzzle pieces.’ They hand them over and we put them together. I love that element, too, but also LOVE aesthetics.” • “I love putting together the items that are going to sing on the tables, in the decor and choosing the vendors to execute the vision. ‘Form over Function’ for me!”
A WORD TO COUPLES
• “Don’t make a huge financial commitment with a vendor before assessing your budget! Take a look at your wedding as a whole, and make sure the priorities level out and are evenly balanced.”
THE TRADITION WE LOVE
• “Getting ready together! Why not spend more time with your favorite person during those early morning hours? Give yourselves time together to settle in for the day ahead.” An airy setting
FAMILY AFFAIRS
• “We’ve seen a major uptick in backyard weddings in 2024. Couples are using family properties for their events.”
BIGGEST LEARNINGs • “There is no way to place a value on managing expectations. Couples appreciate the transparency.” EXCITEMENT AHEAD
Yes!!!
• “We are excited to expand our team! We’ve been working toward putting our company out there in different ways, letting couples and those watching see who we are and putting faces to the company.” • “We are now dipping (reluctantly) into the world of social media reels and videos that are a little more camera-facing for us. Even though Frankie is going in kicking and screaming, Morgan is pulling her in, and the benefits are showing! Our followers are enjoying seeing ‘us.’” ➺ 25

NATURE-MADE DECOR Let’s face it, who needs lavish decorations when an amber sunset, blooming wildflowers or acres of rolling kelly-green hills can serve as your backdrop? “Outdoor and tent weddings are among my favorite,” says Allison Sargent, of Allison Sargent Events in New Jersey, whose own daughter, Carly, was married in a custom-built tent overlooking two fairways on a golf course. “Everyone loves being outdoors on a glorious day,” she says. A BLANK CANVAS “Tented receptions are fantastic because they are blank canvases,” says Julie Pryor, of Pryor Events in Los Angeles. “You can add dramatic lighting, carpeting, and draping. And clear tents bring the outdoors in.”
CONS
UNPREDICTABLE WEATHER “I am a big fan of outdoor events, but you need to be flexible and realize you do not have control of the weather, which has a mind of its own,” says Pryor. “I always have a backup for outdoor events, even in Southern California. This may be an indoor space that an event can be moved into or a gorgeous tent.” TENTS ARE COSTLY While the cost of tents can vary widely, based on size, type and structural design, Marcy Blum of Marcy Blum Events and Weddings in New York City says you should “absolutely” expect to pay more for a tented wedding because you’re shelling out for “not only the tent, but also for the tables, chairs, and other peripherals that are rarely included in site fees.” TEMPERATURE CONTROL “When you host your wedding outdoors you are always vulnerable to weather and change in temperature,” says Colin Cowie, of Colin Cowie Events and Celebrations, in New York and Los Angeles. What to do? “Make sure to shield guests from the sun during the day and provide heaters in the evening,” advises Pryor. Handing out paper fans and parasols can go a long way toward making your guests feel as comfortable as possible. ➺ 29
Getting married at a hotel or resort is a popular choice. The number-one draw? Convenience for you and your guests.
PROS
EXPERIENCED STAFF “Hotels are accustomed to entertaining and hosting large groups of people,” says Cowie. “Here, you have a full infrastructure and team you can rely on.” RENTALS INCLUDED Because hotels typically provide everything you need to host your wedding, you won’t have to worry about bringing in lots of tables, chairs, linens, dishes, silverware, and stemware. BUILT-IN ACCOMMODATIONS You will often be able to reserve a block of rooms for your out-oftown guests at a discounted rate. And many hotels offer wedding packages that include free honeymoon stays.

LACK OF FLEXIBILITY Depending on the hotel, your ability to rearrange the tables to suit your preferences may be limited. “Some banquet managers can be set in their ways and make it difficult to change things up,” says Blum. HIDDEN COSTS It’s important to find out exactly what’s included in your wedding—and what’s not. “For a hotel wedding, inquire about cake-cutting fees, valet costs, and overtime charges before signing a contract,” advises Pryor. OTHER RESTRICTIONS You may have to use the hotel’s vendors, such as the florist and/or lighting designer.

Jessica calls herself an amateur foodie, so good food and drinks were a must for her wedding. “After touring a few banquet hall and hotel ballroom venues, my husband and I realized we either had to book a restaurant that served the type of food we wanted or a raw space that would allow us to bring in our own caterer. But the cost of turning the raw space into something appealing would have blown our budget.” WELL-TRAINED SERVICE STAFF “Restaurants are in the business of making good food and providing good service,” says Jessica. Which leads to… QUALITY TIME WITH GUESTS “What I love most about a destination wedding is that you get to take a smaller group of friends and family away and spend 72 or more quality hours with them in a remote and romantic setting rather than have a single bash in your hometown for 250 people that is all over in five hours,” says Cowie.

you’re taking guests to unfamiliar territory, it’s essential that you make them feel at ease. “As guests respond that they will be attending, let them know that you cannot wait to celebrate with them,” suggests Pryor. “It is also considerate to plan weekend activities for your guests,” she says. LOCAL CUSTOMS AND RESOURCES With a destination wedding, you will often have to put your trust in vendors located many miles away and with whom you may not be very familiar. “You have to rely on local resources or pay big dollars to ship it all in,” says Cowie. “Getting married in a different country is a challenge because each country has its own set of laws when it comes to marriage,” he says. ➺

DECOR BUDGET GOES UP You have the space. Now you need to work some magic to make it look like what you envisioned your wedding to be. As Blum explains, “One-stop venues are not usually the prettiest locations and may require a lot of decor dollars.” BOUND BY THE RULES The house may want you to stick to a particular setup or have limitations on the use of candles or lighting equipment and sound. Also, says Pryor, “Be sure to check on which ven-
dors can be brought in. You do not want to be locked into the venue’s referrals.” POTENTIAL “WEDDING FACTORY” FEEL With venues that rely on weddings for their bread and butter, you risk feeling like you’re just one in a long line of brides waiting for their turn to use the space. This is especially true if you happen to bump into another bride getting married in an adjoining room. Talk about buzz kill. Furthermore, says Cowie, “The problem with one-stop venues is most weddings tend to look the same unless you are bringing in big decor elements and have the time to set them up.” So the way to ensure that this is your day is to transform the space as best you can to suit your vision.

RENTAL COSTS GO UP Although you save money on the venue itself, a wedding for a large group can get expensive simply because of all the rentals you’ll need. “Remember that you will have to bring everything in, from tables and chairs to bars, glasses and even cooking equipment,” says Pryor. VALET PARKING Another important task is to assess the parking situation. Consider arranging for valet parking—and let your neighbors know ahead of time. CLEANUP REQUIRED At the end of the wedding, someone has to do the potentially massive job of cleaning up. This can either be an added expense (hiring a cleaner) or a task bestowed on a few very generous volunteers.

PROS REVEAL CLEVER MONEY-SAVING STRATEGIES FOR EVERY ELEMENT OF YOUR WEDDING.
Elegant options abound but costs vary significantly, so take this expert advice into account before you start scouting locations.
GETTING MORE FOR YOUR MONEY
T
he venues that offer the best value are dedicated event spaces, like hotels and banquet halls (generally speaking, sites with prescribed wedding packages). This is because many services you would otherwise need to hire come included, and bundling them together makes your dollar go farther. When shopping around for a venue, “the number one thing is to make sure you’re comparing apples to apples,” says planner Claudia Hanlin of @weddinglibrary in New York City. “Bringing-in always costs more because you have pick-up and delivery charges for every single thing.” Many brides make the mistake of thinking an outdoor wedding at a family member’s home will result in a big savings. There’s no site fee, but the cost of transforming a backyard into a full-service reception space (tents, lighting, dance floor, portable toilets) can exceed even the most lavish pre-set wedding package.
PAYING LESS FOR PLACES
Another way to save, says Hanlin, is by holding your ceremony, cocktail hour and reception in the same venue—such as a church or synagogue with an attached hall, or a restaurant with multiple party rooms. The cost of a few extra hours on property is considerably less than renting an entirely separate space, and you won’t have to pay to transport guests between locales. Religious and charitable organizations tend to rent for nominal fees, as do government-run sites like cultural institutions and state parks. Plus, what you do pay to rent these places benefits the community. Parks, in particular, can be great bargains, considering they often include scenic backdrops. Naturally picturesque outdoor locales—a stand of towering redwoods, for example—don’t need much adornment, which reduces your decor budget. The key is working with what you’ve got: “In California there are a lot of missions that rent for very little,” says Sasha Souza, the Napa-based event designer, “and they often already have benches in place so you save on furnishings.” Similarly, if your site features a stone patio, consider using that as the dance floor rather than renting one.
INSIDER TIP
At first glance, the fee for renting an empty loft may seem like a steal compared to a ballroom. But as soon as you factor in all the vendors (caterer, servers, bartenders) and rentals (tables, chairs, china, glassware, linens), you’ll see the price tag go way, way up. 34 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Mar/Apr 2025

COMPARING PRINT PRICES
Because offset and digital printing are cheaper to produce, stationers recommend using them for all your day-of needs, like ceremony programs, escort or place cards and menus. “These pieces are often left behind,” says Karen Bartolomei, founder of Grapevine Paperie in Boston and NYC. “Splurge on items that will be mailed to your guests’ homes.”
significant factor in stationery costs is your choice of printing method. At the most expensive end are engraving and letterpress techniques, where the script is artfully raised off the page. If you like this formal feel but don’t want to pay top dollar, consider thermography—it’s much less costly. Offset printing comes next on the price scale, while digital printing is very economical—especially if you’re incorporating multiple colors.
The more elements there are in a wedding invitation, the higher the price. One insert that’s easy to eliminate is the reception card. “If you’re getting married in a church and having your reception at a loft, print ‘Dinner and dancing to follow at Tribeca Rooftop’ on the invite itself,” says Cheree Berry of Cheree Berry Paper in St. Louis, MO. PAYING LESS FOR LIVE ACTS
M
usicians are almost always more expensive than DJs, so hiring instrumentalists to perform at your ceremony and cocktail hour, plus a band as the main act, will cost top dollar. But cash-strapped couples don’t necessarily have to forfeit live entertainment. If you’re having a religious service, check your venue contract before booking anyone, says Deanna Jones, of NYC’s The Deanna Jones Orchestra. “Often you are already paying for a musician at your church or synagogue and just don’t know it.” If that’s not the case, look into nearby civic organizations and
music conservatories. “In some areas, you can book an excellent jazz group or classical trio from a community theater or symphony for a donation or nominal fee,” Jones says, and music students may charge even less. For reception music leads, explore your city’s nightlife scene. A group that performs in local bars or clubs tends to be more cost-effective than a traditional wedding band. As with venues, you may get a bargain rate by holding your wedding on a weekday or a weekend in slow season. Saturday events incur the most competition for services, so they yield the highest price tags.
THINKING OUTSIDE THE BAND
DJs typically cost less than bands, and some couples prefer them because of the greater variety of songs they can play. Although smartphones and services like Spotify let individuals create a playlist and “spin” their own tunes, DJs double as emcees—introducing the bridal party and announcing special dances and toasts. They also provide speakers, which you may have to otherwise rent. Lastly, don’t overlook talented friends and family members. Asking your choir-star cousin to sing a hymn at your service or some college buddies in a cover band to play your first dance track adds the excitement of a live performance for free. ➺ 35

NIXING EXCESS EXPENSES
Refreshments are an important part of every party, but feeding all your friends and family can eat up a good chunk of your wedding change. Here’s how to get more bite for your buck.
PLANNING FRUGAL FARE
Y
ou can reduce almost every wedding expense by editing your guest list, but nowhere does that tactic have more impact than in catering costs. Think about it: Food and drink may run hundreds of dollars per head, meaning that 10 or 20 fewer chairs will result in significant savings. If you can’t get your guest head count down, a buffet may come in as a budget-friendly option because you don’t have to pay for waiters. If you go this route, however, it’s important to serve less expensive fare that can be easily prepared in bulk. If you prefer sit-down service, request that guests make their dinner choices in advance. “Taking an order at the table means the kitchen has to have eighty percent of every option available, which costs a lot more,” says Seattle-based caterer Lisa Dupar. She recommends including an entrée selection line or insert with your invitations so the chef can plan ahead. Also, giving guests fewer choices to begin with (filet mignon or wild mushroom risotto, for example, instead of a meat, fish and vegetarian dish), or the same sides with each alternative, is less work for the cooks. Barely noticeable omissions or substitutions can have a profound effect on your final bill, too, says Brian Kiefer, a senior sales consultant at the Chicago-based caterer Food for Thought. “If you’re serving a beautiful salad with seasonal veggies and simply leave off the cheese, you’ll save one dollar per person,” he says. Whipped potatoes cost less than fingerlings but make an equally

The best way to get more for your money is by selecting seasonal blooms that can be purchased locally rather than shipped in. As soon as you set your date and location, ask your florist to suggest flowers that will be available in that place and time of year. You can also save by using a less expensive flower en masse. It makes a striking statement but requires less effort for your florist than arranging multiple blooms, says Hanlin. catering
If your catering budget is tight, don’t fall into the common trap of overestimating how much your guests will consume. Do you really need assorted passed hors d’oeuvres, a made-to-order sushi station and a mammoth crudité platter at your cocktail hour? “Pick one hearty, filling display—like a local artisan cheese table with fruits, breads and crackers—and have that be it!” says Dupar. Another way to cut back is by shortening the event. “Costs are driven by length of time, so stick to an hour or less for cocktails,” says Kiefer—noting that, on average, people consume one canapé every ten minutes—and consider trimming an hour off the reception. For even deeper savings, skip the full-on dinner altogether, and opt for a brunch, afternoon tea and dessert, or late-night cocktail reception. If you stay flexible and open to creative new ideas, you’ll find lots of innovative approaches to throwing a great party that will also save money.

pensive greenery, like ferns and ivy. “Any kind of leafy filler adds a lush, organic touch and volume, so arrangements don’t appear skimpy,” she says. For ceremony decor, Souza counsels couples marrying in a large church to skip the flowers because they’ll be overwhelmed by the space; just place wreaths on the entry doors.
Souza loves using hardy perennials like succulents and chicks-andhens plants in reception displays instead of fussy, fragile blooms; they aren’t pricey and can be replanted and enjoyed long after the event. Branches, topiaries and tree-trunk slices make great nonfloral centerpiece elements, too, while embellishing tablescapes with fruits and vegetables adds texture for far less than a flowers-only arrangement. Purchasing decorative items like candelabra or vintage vessels is often cheaper than renting them, says Hanlin, and you can always sell them after the wedding. If your floral budget is really limited, stick to adorning the center of the room (no one will notice if the perimeter is a bit sparse) and find other ways to spruce up the tables and chairs. Many venues offer basic linens in an array of shades besides white, and a profusion of one color looks purposeful rather than penny-pinching. Similarly, standard ballroom seats can be dressed up by tying ribbon or narrow lengths of lace into bows and placing them on the chair backs.

wedding cake A decadent confection makes a fitting grand finale, but that fancy finish may not come cheap. Here’s how to sweeten your deal and score a cost-conscious cake.
IMPRESSING FOR LESS
S
ome brides are surprised to learn how expensive wedding cakes run. But they have to look as good as they taste, and that takes effort. “The cake is a dessert, but it also plays a decorative role in the reception—similar to the flowers,” says pastry chef Cheryl Kleinman of Betty Bakery in Brooklyn, NY. When a couple’s eyes are bigger than their budget, a baker might suggest preparing a “fake” cake, made of iced tiers of cardboard or foam except for the tier that’s sliced during the cakecutting ceremony. The guests are then served pieces of an inexpensive cake that’s cut in the kitchen. Alternatively, you can have a diminutive but dramatic cake that serves 35
presented on a pedestal stand on the escort card table; this way guests notice it when getting their seat assignments but later eat slices of an unseen sheet cake.
SCALING BACK ON SUGAR Although cakes are priced by the slice, it’s not likely that every single person will indulge—so you can usually get away with ordering a confection that feeds just 75 percent of attendees. Square cakes yield more slices than round ones, and rich flavors like chocolate make people feel full faster, meaning you can order less and cut thinner slices. To further cut costs, have your cake divided into very small pieces to be passed on trays during the dancing; this way, you may only need to budget for 25
percent of the guest count. Finally, while it’s fun to work with a pastry chef, it isn’t absolutely necessary. If your venue has an in-house caterer, consider booking their baker to save on delivery fees. And consider offering a number of single-layer cakes in a variety of flavors displayed on a collection of pretty cake stands.

I was completely overwhelmed and not much in the mood for adventure, so Chris pivoted. Instead, we took a short hike into a park that backs our neighborhood. He found the only spot of color in the grey-brown November woods, a shrub with bright red berries, and asked me to marry him. Laura looked to her favorite book of the Bible, Ruth, for their first reading. “It’s about a woman’s loyalty and devotion to her mother-in-law, even in a time of bereavement. It was so meaningful to me because it speaks to the relationship I had with my mom, the relationship I have with my husband and the relationships we’re building as we weave our families together. My dad died when I was two, my stepdad when I was 10 and my mom when I was 28, just a month before Chris asked me to marry him. Not having my parents there brought an unavoidable heaviness to the day, as beautiful and meaningful as it was. We listed their names in our Mass program, remembered them during the Prayers of the Faithful and included them in a display of family wedding photos. I would encourage every couple to trust their gut when it comes to incorporating absent loved ones on their wedding day. Even with incredible wedding planners, I really felt the absence of my mom’s advice and support during the wedding-planning process.” Laura ended up enlisting five friends who’d accompanied her dress shopping and to fittings to be her bridesmaids. “I’m so thankful that I had the formal support that came built in with the role of bridesmaid.”
About that dress Laura’s original wedding color palette was white, green and gold, “but everything changed when I found my dress. I tried on lots of beautiful white dresses, but ultimately, the colorful florals felt so much more fun and ‘me.’ The designer actually constructed a custom bodice so the dress fit me just right. I felt so confident, beautiful and playful in it. Post-dress, we entirely switched up the palette for florals, tablescapes and my bridesmaids’ dresses.”

Budget breakdown: Food was the biggest splurge “for sure,” says Laura. That said, “We’re not really cake people, so we didn’t have one. We skipped the cake, favors, bridesmaids’ bouquets, groomsmens’ boutonnieres and videographer, and went with a DJ instead of a band. We also reused the florals from the ceremony for the reception, particularly to surround the sweetheart table. We were so glad we could offer both alcoholic and nonalcoholic versions of our favorite cocktails. Many of our friends don’t drink, and it’s nice to have a fun-but-safe cocktail option if you’re driving.”

Fave moments: “In retrospect, the goofs are some of the best parts. I forgot the bouquet and had to send someone back for it. Chris forgot his shirt and tie, so he had to take family formals in his undershirt while he waited for them to arrive. I got horribly carsick in the limo, and didn’t have time for cold feet because I was too busy trying not to throw up all over my dress. Heck, after changing venues and pushing our wedding back, we ended up getting married on April Fools’ Day! All of those little hiccups made the day feel real and human. Our wedding was playful, earnest, and abundant with the people we love.”
The reception “We initially chose the Peabody Library,” Laura says. “I’m an English teacher and it smells like old books and happiness! However, it was closed over stretches of time for COVID and as those closures inched up, we decided to pivot to the Baltimore Museum of Art. Chris’s sister Michelle, and her husband, Jordan, had had their wedding reception at the BMA, so we knew just how elegant and inspirational the space was. We were a little worried about family friends feeling like they’d gone to the same wedding twice but a different lighting installation had given the main room a more playful vibe, and the switch from my initial palette of green, white and gold to the colors of my dress ensured that our wedding felt distinct.” Ceremony venue: Sts. he Costa Brava, a sun-drenched expanse that hugs 75 Mediterranean miles from the French border toward Barcelona, has welcomed discerning travelers in search of exquisite cuisine served alongside even more spectacular scenery for nearly a century. Family-owned and operated to this day—it’s currently helmed by the fourth generation—guests here feel like they’ve been welcomed to a private home with one of the world’s most spectacular chefs. The literal heart of the hotel is Candlelight Restaurant, with a celebrated multi-course menu that harkens to its founding in 1960 (there are also seasonal variations available). Housed in an imposing white manor-like building, guest rooms are appointed with antiques and artwork as well as heirloom linens, and they open onto the rolling, garden-latticed grounds. It is here by the grand lawn on a stone terrace that wedding ceremonies are hosted. (Or you can opt to swap vows in the village church, something that can be arranged by the on-site coordinator). “I Do” and Ocean Views Enter Kayla and Brandon. College sweethearts whose love defied distance when Brandon graduated early and moved away. Every weekend, he made the journey back, his car filled with podcasts and playlists. For them it was always clear: the question wasn’t if they’d marry after Kayla graduated, but where. Word of mouth led them to Jamaica, where they were captivated by the island’s natural beauty and vibrant culture, ultimately choosing Sandals Dunn’s River as their perfect resort. This all-new destination, with its private beach facing the sunset and a short trek from the natural wonder of Dunn’s River Falls, was exactly what they had envisioned. They were precise about what they wanted — an all-inclusive getaway where their love, and taste, would be the center of celebration. After months of planning with the Sandals team, Kayla and Brandon chose the Jamaican Tropical Hues theme, with wicker lanterns and a flower-draped altar by the sea. Their barefoot ceremony perfectly captured their nine years of love, flowing effortlessly.
With family and friends by their side, they enjoyed the ceremony and got a proper vacation to write home (and post on Instagram) about. After days of celebration and Caribbean vacationing, Kayla and Brandon’s family returned to the States. The couple stayed for their honeymoon in a Coyaba Sky Villa Rondoval — complete with a private stargazing space, pool, and butler team, making it an indulgent retreat. Later that week, standing atop Dunn’s River Falls with the dense jungle behind them and roaring waters below, Kayla and Brandon felt the quiet joy of a choice made right. Their love, nine years in bloom, had found the perfect soil to blossom and reveal its full beauty.

American Jay and Argentine Rocío have lived in Los Cabos for 12 years. 000 8 HONEYMOON GUIDE Mar/Apr 2025

This celebration robust with a jet-setting guest list was a blend of cultures and experiences that reflected both the couple and the destination. by Jenna Mahoney
A
t the tip of the Baja Peninsula on the Pacific Coast of Mexico beckon the twin towns of San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, collectively known as ‘Los Cabos.’ Here, where an arid landscape meets the restless ocean, there’s something in the air. Truly a star-studded destination, the area attracts not only the bold-faced but also the most discerning travelers in search of exquisite cuisine, elevated accommodations and cool cultural happenings set against unparalleled landscapes. Beyond the area’s appeal to American groom Jay Beckman and his Argentine bride Rocío Miguel, it’s also “where we live! In receiving so much love from our loved ones traveling to celebrate with us,” the pair also showcased the best of Los Cabos.
Working with a coordinator helped streamline planning.
Yachting and fishing are marquee excursions in Los Cabo. Trips to El Arco–a stone arch formation in the sea—is on the must-do list for all visitors’ itineraries, including a sunset sail hosted by Rocío and Jay. Many details were local.
Acre recently debuted a new wedding space called Los Agaves.
classic attractions Much like the clientele of Los Cabos, the guest list for Rocío and Jay’s wedding was global, sophisticated and brimming with star power. And the couple shared the best of the destination with all of them. “The design for the wedding decorations included colorful otomi (a prehistoric embroidery and textile art), and we had mariachis playing.” Cuisine is another Los Cabos calling card that was reflected in the celebration. The couple offered margaritas and palomas—“traditional Mexican drinks as our signature cocktails”—and welcomed guests with a taco bar. The reception menu was “light and fresh,” served family-style with local veggies, fish and a variety of dietary options.➺
Mariachis are a traditional wedding performance. 9

What were the most appealing local attractions for Rocío and Jay’s guests? “The beach was the numberone activity. There are also great golf options, with different views, challenges, and budgets.” Surfing, scuba diving and fishing are all favorites for visitors and locals alike. The couple also loves the Thursday evening art walk in San Jose.
Unexpected touches included a glitter bar and tarot card reading.
Salud!
“The plan was to have fun.”

in the stars
Sun-kissed and sophisticated is a Los Cabos vibe.
In keeping with their curated and personalized celebration, Rocío and Jay had two ceremonies to seal their happily-ever-after. The first was the day before the main event. “We had a spiritual union at the beach, which was very intimate and meaningful,” shares Rocío. They followed that event with dinner at one of their favorite taco spots, The Hangman. At Acre, the site of their wedding and reception celebration, their planner helped them arrange their ceremony “under a beautiful tree at the entrance to the venue, making it so romantic and special.”
legally The requirements wed for saying “I do” in Mexico are quite involved. All couples must be 18 or older and not currently married. You’ll need to present a valid passport, tourist card (issued upon arrival), birth certificate, blood test results (done in Mexico), completed marriage application forms from the local registry and four witnesses. All foreign documents, with the exception of your passport, will need to be translated, apostilled and notarized. The couple and their witnesses must arrive in Mexico four business days before the wedding day for legal ceremonies.
While hotly debated to their origin story in Los Cabos proper, fish tacos are a marquee offering in the area. The hand-held delights are corn tortillas topped with crispy-battered fish, cabbage, pico de gallo, guacamole and a cream sauce. 10 HONEYMOON GUIDE Mar/Apr 2025

To assist those who aren’t multilingual, signage and songs (!) were available in both English and Spanish. In fact, the couple had two DJs play a set each, so friends could dance to their favorite—and familiar—music. They also had moments that spoke across languages, most notably live music from The Gipsy Chico Castillo AKA the Gipsy Kings. Says Rocío: “The Gipsy Kings opening the dance floor was incredible. All our guests from different cultures and ages knew their songs and really enjoyed them. It was magical!”

On Jamaica, the Caribbean island known for its rum punch, reggae and really photogenic beaches, the land is rich with tropical vegetation, farmlands and coffee production. There are five colonies of bees who create honey for on-property food and drink, an on-site garden is home to nearly 30 kinds of fruits and vegetables and the spa utilizes herbs from an adjacent herb garden. The Jamaican Bush Bath treatment is a must-try (room rates start at $425 a night halfmoon.com).

or some, finding the one perfect wedding location can be (almost) as much of a journey as it was finding the one happily-after partner with whom you’re about to make that public promise. Such was the case for Diane née Comstock and Sean Hastings. “My husband and I are both from Jacksonville, Florida so we wanted to get married close to our hometown,” explains the bride. They toured many local sites, but none worked. Then they discovered Omni Amelia Island Resort & Spa. “The overall feeling we had when we toured it—we knew it was the one as soon as we got there.” The property amenities, the attention to details, and the ability to host all their events in a single spot with various sites added to that perfect pairing. “Being able to hold our wedding at such a gorgeous resort was truly amazing.”
The couple enhanced the reception space with bespoke decor.
enchanted garden Sean’s mom suggested the couple
tour the Omni Amelia Island. With views of the water, the dunes and its gorgeous tree canopy, the initial approach impressed Diane, who was at first hesitant to celebrate at a seaside resort. But then, “we checked out Walker’s Landing and I could see us getting married under the beautiful trees with Spanish moss.” Next, they saw the reception area: “I loved how high the ceiling was, the view of the marsh, the fireplace. It was the perfect canvas to bring my ‘enchanted garden’ vibe to life.” Sold on the setting, Diane and Sean worked with the accommodating staff and local planners The Eventful Gals to curate their vision. ➺

Hosting their wedding at a resort meant each event had its own “moment.”
“The most romantic spot was our ceremony site. The canopy trees with hanging Spanish moss were pure magic. The birds chirping and the way the sun shone through the trees—it was one of those feelings where you knew you were right where you’re supposed to be.”
The cookies and cream cake contained chocolate buttercream.

don’t sleep
Among their favorite
offerings on property, Diane and Sean particularly love the breakfast buffet at Sunrise Cafe. With a spectacular array of amazing garden-fresh options, “it felt like walking into a farmer’s market/bakery,” says Diane, adding, “And the view from the breakfast area is stunning.”
Diane called her ceremony site “pure magic.”
To the bride!
Wedding planners helped with all the details.
water works
While on property, a morning ritual for the couple included ordering coffee to savor while on their suite’s balcony. “The day after the wedding, my husband woke me to watch the sunrise on our balcony. The view from the presidential suite was unmatched!”
The flowers were locally sourced.
Invitations set the vibe for the celebration.
The state of Florida
legally requires marriage licenses. They are wed issued at the county clerk’s office and cost $93.50. There is a waiting period of three days. The price may be reduced by two-thirds, and the waiting period waived if the couple completes a premarital course. In addition to the fee, the couple must present photo IDs and Social Security numbers. Licenses are valid for 60 days.
modern heritage
In homage to their Filipino heritage, the couple hosted a lechon (full-pig display with buffet) rehearsal dinner. In keeping with the bride’s enchanted vision, the space for the event was romantically lit with candles and decorated with white roses. During the reception, Sean and Diane had a money dance. “The Filipino wedding tradition sees guests pin money on the bride and groom’s clothing.” The symbolic gesture of abundance and prosperity helps the couple start their financial future together with blessings from all of their guests. 32 HONEYMOON GUIDE Mar/Apr 2025

Not only did it make for a spectacular setting for celebrating, the Omni Amelia Island is robust with amenities that appealed to the couple’s guests, most of whom traveled for the event. Many checked in early to enjoy the offerings—favorites included golf, kayaking and the adults-only infinity pool with a spectacular ocean view. “Our guests enjoyed walking on the beach from the property.” says Diane. The pool bars also made a splash, as did the hot tub area. “We spent a lot of time at the hot tub, catching up with our guests. It was a really good hangout spot.”

tretching from the Greater Antilles—Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica—in the north, Mexico to the west and nearly to Venezuela on the southern end, the Caribbean is, yes, paradise found, but it is also one one of the world’s most diverse regions. The area, which encompasses 16 independent island nations, 770 islands and seemingly limitless sun-streaked islets, sugar-sand cays and beaches, perennially tops our honeymooners’ wish lists. And while every destination within the region promises amazing adventures, excellent accommodations and loads of pool and beach time, the best of fun in the sun, and how you—and they—define it may vary. Hot tip: Even the color of the sand varies from island to island. Does your daydream include cultural excursions and innovative cuisine? Are you more about heart-pumping mountain adventures and thrilling deep water exploration? Or do you want to chase waterfalls? All these questions and more can determine your ideal spot in the sun. Peep this three-point guide on how to find the perfect Caribbean destination for you.

One key to a successful marriage is compromise. And that’s true for travel too. Make a list of your five honeymoon musthaves. They can be as general—organic food programming—or specific—experience swimming with the pigs in Exumas—as you like. Have your partner make their list, too. Anything that appears on both automatically rises to priority level. Use the top three preferences—non-stop flights; organic cuisine; adults only hotels, for example, to start your search.
Define your vibe
What feels like happily ever after to the two of you? If you prefer a party and a more-the-merrier pool scene, check out the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and the Bahamas. Maybe your idea of escaping includes an ultra-luxurious resort located in a natural reserve so it imparts the sensation of being off-the-grid. If so, check out Puerto Rico, St. Lucia and St. John, U.S.V.I. Or perhaps you’re all about the private-island experience: You can find them in Turks & Caicos, across the Bahamas, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. And for those who can’t vacation without a side of cultural attractions, Jamaica and Cuba are tops.
[dek tries]
Discover your happily ever after with these insider travel tips.
Assess the action levels
While this step may feel like a combo of the previous two, it serves as the final refinement of your vision. At this point you and your partner have set your priorities—Top Chef experiences (which can be found in Grand Cayman, St. Barths and Puerto Rico); unexpected colors of sand (black—Grenada, Vieques, St. Lucia; pink—Harbor Island, Barbados, Eleuthera) and access to gaming (Aruba, St. Kitts, Dominican Republic), now it is time to define what an active vacation means to you. Along with swimming, boating, and snorkeling, most destinations offer standup paddleboarding, kayaking and fishing excursions. A select few are more renowned for certain experiences. Abacos Island, for example, is celebrated for its bone fishing; Bonaire has among the best diving spots in the world. Other islands promise heart-pumping excursions deep into their interiors, such as summiting Gros Piton on St. Lucia or climbing the challenging Bordeaux Mountain Trail on St. Croix, U.S.V.I. No matter how you define it, you’re more than likely to have access to amazing spa treatments at your honeymoon-perfect stay. How’s that for daydreams realized?
