Wedding

Straight talk, smart solutions by Mary Clarke, Editor in Chief
R.S.V.P. PLEASE
MENU MATTERS
We’re getting married at the end of January and I’m worried that with all the holiday activities going on beforehand, our invitations will get lost in the shuffle, and people will neglect to respond. How do I make sure this doesn’t happen? Start by getting your invites out early. No one has ever complained about receiving wedding invitations too soon—in fact, it’s really a courtesy, since by doing so guests will have more time to plan. Make sure your invitations are in the mail by December 1, and give an R.S.V.P. deadline of just after the first of the year and at least two weeks before your wedding date. This way, if you do have to make follow-up calls and emails, you’ll have enough time. If yours is a destination wedding, send out save-the-date notices six months before the wedding and invitations four months before the big day.
My son’s fiancé is vegan and wants to have an all-vegan menu at their wedding. Is this a good idea? Not everyone is a strict vegan, so a better option would be to offer a varied menu that includes vegan dishes—the couple can even have a delectable vegan cake. They should also place an insert in the wedding invitation asking guests if they have any special dietary needs (gluten-free, kosher) and then ask their caterer to prepare appropriate dishes if need be.
Q A
WORKPLACE INVITES
PHOTOGRAPHY: JODY ZORN PHOTOGRAPHY
Q
We don’t have enough in our budget to include all of my coworkers, but I’d like to invite some of them. How can I do this without offending anyone? Where to begin? With your boss. As a courtesy, you should definitely include your immediate supervisor and your assistant if you have one. If you’ve been working (in person or virtually) with a regular crowd and feel close to them, then you pretty much have to go the all-ornothing route to avoid hurt feelings. If you have a group of people reporting to you (say you’re head of a department), you have two options: Invite all of them, or just the most senior members of the group.
A
Q A
THANK-YOU TIP
Q
A friend suggested we send preprinted thank-you notes (along with a wedding photo) to ease the task of responding to all the gifts. Is this appropriate? Sorry, only a handwritten personal message from you and your new spouse will do. Send out your thank-you notes within three months of the wedding, and be sure to include a reference to the gift itself. If you receive any gifts before the big day, send your thank-yous out immediately to avoid a backlog. And while a photo is a nice memento, it’s not necessary to include one.
A
BRIDAL PARTY TOO BIG?
Q A
How many attendants are considered too many? I have tons of friends and can’t make up my mind about who to include. You can have as few as one (maid, matron or person of honor) or as many as 12. But know that a large number of
attendants usually means more money spent (thank-you gifts, bouquets) and more planning stress. Coordinating the schedules and attire for a big group is challenging, which is why most wedding parties average four to six bridesmaids. Although it’s hard to narrow down your choices, keep in mind that you can also give honored roles to friends that won’t be attendants. Ask them to do a reading, recite a special prayer or blessing and, if they’re musically talented, sing a song or play an instrument during the ceremony.
DANCE DILEMMA
Q
At my daughter’s wedding, am I expected to dance with my ex-husband after the father/daughter and mother/son dances? I’ve remarried and would not want my current spouse to feel slighted. It’s considerate of you to ask. No, you’re not expected to dance with your ex-husband. When the parents are called to the dance floor, your partner can be your new spouse and your ex can dance with their date or new spouse (if they’re remarried as well).

THE POWER OF PRETTY [ beauty note ] Gabriela! Let’s talk MEET Hello lipstick. Why a brand that LIPSTICK focuses solely on lipstick? GURU, Two things: one, a woman is MADAME always applying and GABRIELA reapplying lipstick; and two, BEAUTY we focus our skincare energy on face products, leaving lip care as an afterthought. I wanted a product that was not only beautiful but also beneficial. How did your love for lipstick begin? I have very vivid memories of growing
up in Mexico City, and watching my grandmother use lipstick as a “dressing up” tool. She never left her house without a good color lipstick, ready to face the day. What’s different about Madame Gabriela Beauty lipstick? The unique ingredient in our formula: Manuka Honey, sourced from my business partner’s bee farms in New Zealand. This nature’s gold has considerably high levels of enzymes and antibacterial
properties that help the skin heal and seal moisture – almost magical! Your best bridal lip tips? Such a special day! For that romantic glow I would use a dab of our New York at 1PM in the center of the lips and then use our Sydney at 8AM in the rest of the lips, lightly blending both shades leaving a slightly stronger hue in the middle. Finish with a touch of our Saint-Tropez at 11AM to add some shine.

“I wanted to create something romantic with a flowing, organic shape that would be light enough for a bride to carry easily,” says Jillian Elliott, Senior Event Designer at Winston Flowers in NYC, of the bouquet on our cover. We asked for red blooms, and Jillian delivered (spectacularly!), landing on a masterful mix of red sweet peas in peak season, plus “a gorgeous new varietal of Japanese anemones and ranunculus for added texture,” she says. A flurry of ribbons creates an opulent finish. As a family business with over 80 years of experience, the Winston Flowers team understands that wedding flowers allow the personality and style of each couple to really shine, and when done well, can be one of the most memorable parts of the day, elevating an already special occasion to something extraordinary. Top fitness pro Greg Doyle shares his best aisle-worthy shape-up strategies.
PHOTOGRAPHY: (BRIDE) PAUL JOCHICO; GOWN BY ROBERT BULLOCK
“I have so much fun working out with brides,” says Greg Doyle, who's trained clients in New York City, online, and in his book, Fit for a Bride. “Brides-to-be have so much motivation, along with a set deadline, which can actually make the process easier.” Here, he gives us some key highlights from his fitness and nutrition program. SET A TIMELINE. Give yourself 2 months to lose 10 pounds; 3-4 months to lose 20; and 6 months if your aim is to lose more than 30. These timelines allow you to lose weight in a healthy way. YOU NEED BOTH EXERCISE "Working with AND PROPER NUTRITION. kettlebells not only improves your postural When you eat less and don’t exermuscles, it strengthens cise, your metabolism drops after and tones you from head to toe." about three days of lower caloric intake. This means you stop losing weight, and now you’re just hungry. Adding exercise to the mix helps to prevent that disastrous metabolic slowdown. RETHINK YOUR FOOD CHOICES. On the flip side, I’ve had brides tell me they’ve been working out every day and still not losing any weight. I’ll take a look at what they’re eating and it’s just garbage. You can’t outwork a poor diet. Success comes with the combination of eating the right slimming foods, along with full-body, calorie-crushing workouts.
GREG’S KEY WORKOUT RULES • RESISTANCE GETS YOU LEANER, NOT BULKIER. Whether using body weight or actual weights, resistance work will help boost your metabolism and keep you burning calories hours after you leave the gym. • KETTLEBELLS ARE AWESOME. Working with kettlebells not only improves your postural muscles, it strengthens and tones you from head to toe. Make sure to get proper instruction beforehand, since correct kettlebell technique is key to safety and efficacy. • IT'S OK TO DO SHORTER WORKOUTS. If you dread the gym, keep your sessions short—you'll still reap benefits. Set your phone timer for 30-45 minutes, and once it's up, you are finished. This will keep you motivated to get in and out quickly. • KEEP IT SIMPLE. You don’t need a gym membership to get in amazing shape. Working out using an $8 jump rope can burn more calories than running on a $3,000 elliptical machine. • WORK OUT FROM HEAD TO TOE. While hitting target areas is important for a bride-to-be, your main workouts should focus on full-body moves such as squats and overhead presses, kettlebell swings and burpees. These moves engage so many muscles at the same time that you’ll burn many more calories, and actually help to boost your metabolism.
GREG’S KEY NUTRITION RULES • LOAD UP ON VEGGIES AND LEANA 130-pound woman should drink 65 responds well to carbs and is less likely PROTEIN. Ground Rules even the celebrities, I begin by sitting

down with them
• DO inject you and your fiancé’s personalities into
to lay the ground-
every element of your big day. You want this event to be uniquely yours. Quirky place cards, thoughtful favors and your favorite foods during the cocktail hour are great places to bring in personal touches. • DO practice walking around in your shoes a few times before your wedding day. Even ballet flats can give you a nasty blister if they’re not broken in. Try doing a few chores around the house in your wedding footwear (when your fiancé isn’t home) to ensure you’ll be able to dance the night away. • DO choose a hair and makeup style that is similar to your everyday look, with an added touch of upgraded glamour. Your fiancé is going to want to see you walking down the aisle, and you’ll be much happier looking back on your pictures in a few years. • DO be upfront with all of your vendors about what you do and don’t want at your wedding. For example, provide a “don’t play” list to your DJ or band and a “must take” list for your photographer so everything is exactly as you envisioned it. • DO remember to send thank-you notes to those who made your special day perfect, but may not have been a guest at your wedding. Loved your officiant? Developed a great relationship with the coordinator at your venue? Let them know. Your kind words will be appreciated.
work for a smooth planning journey. Every couple should take some time, completely by themselves, to envision their perfect day. Ask yourselves the most important question of all: What feeling do I want my guests to have throughout the celebration? What emotions do I want them to take away? The answers to these questions will inform every decision you make. There are so many “I Dos” and “I Don’ts” along the way that keeping them straight can be almost as overwhelming as the planning process itself. Here are a few tips that I think are among the most important to keep in mind.
I Don’ts • DON’T spend your big day glued
to social media! I know you’ve been waiting a long time to change your relationship status to “married,” but—please—save it for the next day. Turn away from your phone, stay present in the moment and spend your wedding reception connecting face to face (not virtually) with your loved ones and new husband. • DON’T forget to eat throughout the day and at your reception. It can be all too easy to neglect to nibble with all the excitement, but a few glasses of champagne can be dangerous on an empty stomach. • DON’T be afraid to give your speakers a suggested time
limit for their toasts. Five minutes is a good rule of thumb to stick to. Your guests will thank you, and it will keep your reception feeling more like a party and less like a presentation. • DON’T feel like you have to stick to either traditional wedding customs or current trends. If wearing a big white dress, tossing your bouquet and distributing tulle bags full of Jordan almonds just doesn’t feel like you, skip it. If you prefer white wine and red velvet cake to a specialty cocktail and candy bar, do it. It’s your day: You get to decide what happens. • DON’T sweat the small stuff. Be prepared for some things to go wrong. But remember that it won’t be a big deal when they do. Whatever it is, you’ll look back on it and laugh, so enjoy your day in spite of whatever didn’t go as planned.
Preparing your own master list of I Dos and I Don’ts can help you stay focused in the long run. Reflect on the weddings you’ve been to that you liked and also what you promised yourself you would never do. When you feel as though you have a good collection of ideas and inspirations, it’s time to start putting them in order and turning all of these fantasies into realities! 20 BRIDALGUIDE.COM May/June 2024

“Our vision was an elevated garden wedding,” says Madeline Danesi of her nuptials with Mitchell Borrowdale. That vision was brought to life with a mix of bright florals set against the property’s lush greenery, summery linens, and garden-themed details. 1 With such a small guest list (32 total), “lots of special details were added,” Madeline says, such as custom dinner napkins and additions to the menu. 2 Pressed (real) flowers adorn the cake. 3 Madeline’s middle name is Coral, so incorporating that hue “was a huge factor,” she says. 4 Madeline’s bouquet. 4

WHY I LOVE WEDDINGS
• “Weddings are two things to me. First, I love the connection couples have with each other. Secondly, their wedding is the ONLY time that their particular group of guests will be in one room together to celebrate with them. This is a truly special moment.”

MY FAVORITE WEDDING TRADITION
• “I love when clients write their own vows. The ceremony is much more heartfelt. This allows the couple to share with their guests some of the most intimate and beautiful reasons they have chosen each other.”

THE PERFECT WEDDING WEEKEND
• “I recently had a wedding weekend that was just perfect! The weekend began with a small rehearsal dinner in a restaurant, followed by a bowling party for all out-of-town guests! Both families are quite competitive!” • “On that Saturday, the wedding was at the Central Park Zoo, followed by an after party, and then to top it off, a bagel brunch at the home of the parents of the bride. The weekend was emotional, fun, silly, and special for all to enjoy.”

• “Please be honest about your budget. No matter the number, big or small, I will make sure to get the most out of your spend, but I need to know what I am working with from the start. There will be bumps in the road. A favorite venue or caterer may not be available or the weather may not be ideal. Allow me to navigate. Often, the most memorable aspects of a wedding come from what started as a compromise. It is important to not let them overshadow the magic of the day.”
MY FAVORITE PART OF WEDDING PLANNING
• “I am still in touch with many, many of my clients years later. Having a bond with your client is truly important. This only adds to the overall satisfaction I get from doing the actual wedding. I often end up doing holiday parties, mitzvahs, birthday parties and more for them in the future. The wedding is just the beginning.”
EXCITEMENT AHEAD
• “2024 is shaping up to be a busy year, and 2025 seems to be even bigger! My clients continue to amaze me with their energy and their ideas, so I am ready to take on those new challenges! We may be adding even more services as well! Stay tuned…” ➺ 27

hat can couples expect from an Emily Coyne Events luxury wedding? “Our deliverables, Emily Coyne specifically our proprietary design and production decks, are widely recognized as some of the most comprehensive and expertly crafted in the industry,” says founder and principal planner Emily Coyne. Five years in the upscale hospitality industry, followed by 10 years working at luxury resorts and private estate venues immersed in all things weddings, led to launching her own bespoke company in 2018. “After executing over 500 weddings, I knew I wanted to produce a much smaller number of weddings each year,” says Emily, “but at a much more detailed level. When ECE was born, the reputation I had already gained propelled us onto the short lists of preferred planning companies at dozens of luxury properties. ” “As a child, I copied my architect father by sketching hundreds of floor plans and was fascinated by my interior designer mother.” Emily was also inspired by another Emily. “I spent hours poring over an original copy of Emily Post’s Book of Etiquette that I discovered in our library.” The creative pursuits of her childhood paid off handsomely! More is more.
OUR SIGNATURE STYLE
• “Our couples are unique, and their weddings should be a reflection of them, not us. We work with a limited number of couples to ensure we know them intimately: their love story, dreams, what inspires them, what frightens them.” • “From chic Napa Valley elegance, to bohemian-on-the-beach in Los Cabos, snowy mountain flair in Aspen, rustic and relaxed Wyoming ranch, city art gallery in San Francisco, and everything in between, we keep the focus constantly on our clients’ style.” 28 BRIDALGUIDE.COM May/June 2024
Pure joy.
Reception with a view.
FINDING INSPIRATION
An airy setting.
• “We draw so much inspiration from our couples, as well as from the incredible creatives we work with.” •“Architecture and home design are another huge inspiration. We want our weddings to reflect a residential air, welcoming and comfortable for guests.”
TAPPING INTO CREATIVITY
Details, details.
• “We’ve flown a couple by helicopter to a mountain peak in the middle of the wilderness for a ceremony.” • “We’ve built a 40-foot-long bridge over a lily pond to create the aisle for a ceremony, been the first ever to build a floor across an iconic Napa Valley venue, and we’ve spent a week constructing an entire reception space from scratch.”
LOVE THIS NEW TRADITION
• “Not having the wedding party stand up front during the ceremony. It’s never fun to stand for 30 minutes trying to look perfect. After the couple takes their place at the front, allow the wedding party to sit in the first or second row so that they can be present and focused on enjoying the ceremony along with the rest of the guests.”
THE BEST FOR GUESTS

The sweetest things. Magic hour.
• “We always place a huge emphasis on details to delight and pamper guests. This can range from shoe valet services, to welcome bags customized with each guest’s favorite goodies, to passing chilled rolled towels around the dance floor when everyone gets sweaty, and so much more!”
SHINING MOMENT
• “Giving etiquette lessons to the young sons of a couple, and then listening to one of them bring down the house with tears and laughter while giving his best man toast.”
POST-PANDEMIC WEDDING EVOLUTION
• “We are still seeing a range of guest counts, from 30 to over 300. There’s more focus on the guest experience, and often guest counts are reduced in order to produce a more customized, elevated wedding overall without increasing the total budget.” • “We’re also seeing couples being more interested in opening up their venue search to destinations they might not have immediately considered.”
EXCITEMENT AHEAD
• “We’re working in some incredible destinations, with the kindest couples! When we work with couples who value their guest experience and are focused equally on hospitality and the design vision, the results are truly memorable.” 29
site sa vvy Budget tips for any location When looking to cut costs, always consider your venue. Here’s how to manage expenses wherever you wed. By Elena Donovan Mauer
T
hey say location is everything—and when you’re trying to save money on your wedding, it helps to compare the choices. At the same time, remember that your venue will set the tone for your celebration. This guide can help you decide what type of location is best for you in terms of both budget and style.
Right at home
Think an at-home wedding will be cheap? Think again. Your family home has huge sentimental value, but it isn’t equipped with most things you’ll need. • Plan to save on something you may not have even considered yet: the water. “Make sure the caterer doesn’t charge you an obscene amount for bottled water,” says Christine Paul of Christine Paul Events in New York City. “Use a water filter and fill pitchers with ice and lemon or lime slices. You’ll save hundreds of dollars on water!” • Provide an affordable favor that reminds guests of home: “Pick one of Grandma’s favorite recipes and write it on note cards,” says Amy Nichols of Amy Nichols Special Events in San Francisco. And keep the entertainment simple. “Have a single musician play. By cutting out the other five band members, you cut your cost.” hung with ribbon from tree branches in the yard. Paul recommends: “Mix up different-size lanterns. As day turns to dusk, they’ll create a warm ambience for very little money.”
“Marrying at home? Bringing in a ton of rental items can add up very quickly. You also may need to pay for permits covering special events, alcohol, fire and parking.” 30 BRIDALGUIDE.COM May/June 2024

Beachy keen
Many brides dream about marrying on the beach—what could be more romantic, with the wind in your hair and the sea in the background? It’ll be a breeze to keep costs down, right? • Check to see if you need a permit and rental fee. Avoid extra costs—and headaches—by booking a hotel that’s right on the water. “A smaller hotel might throw in the cost of renting the beach when you book your rooms,” says Nichols. “And many times, a wedding-night suite—or an entire honeymoon—is part of the wedding package at a beachfront hotel.” • Keep things casual. “Skip the formality,” Laura Weatherly of Engaging Affairs, Inc. in Alexandria, VA says. Instead of wearing an expensive beaded dress or ballgown, opt for a simple, sleek sheath and go without a veil. • “If you keep your ceremony short and sweet, you can have guests stand—and cut the cost of chair rentals.” Weatherly also suggests creating a pretty ceremony space by placing an arch in front of the water. But instead of decorating it with pricey flowers, use fabric, ribbon or keep it plain wood. “A more modern, low-key arch won’t take away from the beauty of the beach,” she says. Instead of petals, your flower girl can sprinkle seashells she gathers herself. • “Consider a cocktail reception instead of a seated meal, so guests can mingle throughout the entire event,” says Weatherly. • Serve a few signature tropical drinks instead of offering a fully stocked bar. • Keep the wedding cake small, says Nichols. “Have a fire pit set up in the sand and roast marshmallows for s’mores.”
“For beach wedding decor, go with local, tropical blooms and seashells. Small votives mixed with taller candles create ambience, and they’re cheap!” Fine wines
A vineyard setting, with fine food, stunning scenery and, of course, delicious wines, creates a rich, sensory experience. The problem? A potentially high price tag. • “Keep your guest list as small as possible to ensure an intimate affair,” says Paul. The fewer the number of guests, the easier it is to keep costs low. • Nix the standard full, open bar and stick to wine (and nonalcoholic drinks). “After all, you are at a vineyard,” Paul says. “You can pair a different wine with each course. It will wow your guests, and actually save you money over a full bar.” • Save on flowers. Because a vineyard is already full of lush trees, you won’t need to go crazy with high-priced floral arrangements. “Enhance the natural beauty; don’t compete with it,”says Nichols. “Keep the floral arrangements low—tall centerpieces start at about $400 each.” • Consider a family-style meal. Set long wooden tables with bowls of food, suggests Paul. “As long as you’re serving dishes with fresh vegetables and bright colors, you’ll eliminate the need for pricey centerpieces.” • Recycle. “Wine bottles can double as table numbers and corks as escort cards. Make it a DIY project,” Paul says. ➺ 31
“At a hotel, it’s a given that everything should be included—tables, chairs, linens and so on. The only items you should expect to pay for are food and beverage.” “The fee may even apply to serving cupcakes!” Politely ask to have these service charges waived. • Remember: Taxes and gratuities aren’t usually factored into your original quote either.
Top chef
Weddings in hotels are ever popular because out-of-towners won’t have far to go to rest their heads—and because the hotel staff is well versed in receptions. Holding your festivities in a hotel is usually a cost-effective choice, but there are some important things to keep in mind. • Make sure everything is included in the fee. “At a hotel everything should be included—tables, chairs, linens and so on,” says Christine Paul. “The only items you should pay for are food and beverage.” • Beware of extras, says Jo Ann Woodward of Schwartz & Woodward in Houston, TX. Chair covers and upgraded linens and overlays are oh so pretty, but these add-ons can add up fast— so be sure to prioritize what’s important. • Go seasonal. “Ask the hotel staff what’s considered high season and what’s low,” says Paul. “It will differ depending on the hotel and its location, but if you book at low season, it could save you thousands of dollars.” • Negotiate—before signing a contract. Many hotels offer package deals with set prices, but if you negotiate you might get even more for your money. Ask for a complimentary weddingnight suite or a free package upgrade. “We often get the couple an extra hour of bar service, a champagne toast, suites for both parents or an upgraded menu,” says Laura Weatherly. • Seek out any hidden charges. “I’ve seen hotels charge as high as a $10 per person cake-cutting fee,” says Nichols. 32 BRIDALGUIDE.COM May/June 2024
Lofty ideas
City brides love the blank canvas of an urban loft—there’s no ugly carpeting to cover up or gaudy chandeliers to ignore. The problem is, there’s not much else there, either. • Go for a modern look. “If you want anything besides a chic, simple wedding, a loft is not the financially savvy choice,” says Paul. “But if you want a contemporary vibe, it’s fantastic.” • Keep the space clutter-free and embellish with pops of bright, monochromatic flowers. • Decorate with non-floral objects, like DIY paper pinwheels, flowers and origami shapes, says Weatherly. Nichols recommends hanging pompoms or lanterns, and filling cylindrical vases with water and floating candles or branches. Use the city as your backdrop: In the daytime, pull the curtains open; at night, let the stars—or the skyline—be on display. • Be selective about vendors. Ask your loft manager for a list of preferred vendors who’ve worked at the site before. “It’s unusual for a loft to have an existing kitchen, so the caterer will have to create one,” says Paul. “Using a caterer who’s experienced with the space will keep your rental fees down, since they’ll know exactly what they need to cater there.” • Ask if you can purchase your own spirits for the reception. Save dough by going through a wholesaler.

Ballroom bash
Foodie couples may want to get hitched at their favorite restaurant. But if you’re going to “buy out” the place for a night, it will likely cost you big. What to do? • Choose the right day. “If the restaurant is always closed on Sundays, they may be willing to waive a buy-out fee and give you use of the whole restaurant if you guarantee a certain dollar amount,” says Paul. “Just as with a hotel, be sure to ask when the busy times are and avoid them.” • Decorate with small, reasonably priced items. “Opt for smaller bud vases as a centerpiece,” says Weatherly. “And use the restaurant’s votive candles.” • Have the restaurant create a special wedding menu. “The menu you put together can offer a few options,” says Weatherly. “This way you can control your price point for each guest and eliminate surprise add-ons.” • Forgo live entertainment. “Restaurants almost always have sound systems that you can use with your iPhone,” Nichols says.

ew brides think much about science when planning a wedding, other than their chemistry with their soon-tobe-spouse. As a scientist, a onetime bride and a professor who directed the Miami University Regret Lab and taught classes on decision-making, I know that research from decision and psychological science offers a number of strategies for how to feel great about your wedding-planning choices so you’ll enjoy your day to the fullest. Here, some tips.
Trying to find “the absolute best” will make you less happy. People
can use two strategies in making a choice: trying to pick the supremely perfect option or trying to pick an option that meets all of their requirements and standards. Research by psychologist Dr. Barry Schwartz and colleagues has found that the latter strategy actually seems
to make people happier—after and were more likely to purchase all, you can never be absolutely a jar, whereas people who had sure that there’s not another multiple choices were too overgown, cake, venue, fill-in-thewhelmed to feel confident in a blank somewhere out there decision. I chose to work with a that might not have been wedding coordinator in no a tiny bit better than small part so that she HINT: Turning off the decisionwhat’s in front of could narrow down making wheels to pursue you. Fewer choices are more satisfying. Dr. Sheena Iyengar of Columbia University did a study where people could sample either a few flavors from a brand of jam, or all the brand’s flavors. People who had fewer choices to consider wound up liking the jam more
Big choice? Take your mind off of it. Researchers

Cornell University have found that people tend to be happier with “experiential” purchases like concerts than with material purchases. We decided to budget money for a craft bartender for cocktail hour instead of upgraded linens or chairs, and had an “experiential” favor—strips from a photo booth that also served as our guest book.
Nerves—and audiences— help if you’re an expert, but hurt if you’re a novice.
Not sure about reading your own vows? Research suggests that having an audience tends to get our adrenaline going, which helps for things we’re really confident about. If you and your fiancé are seasoned public speakers, you’re likely to shine extra-bright on the big day when the wedding jitters help fire you up. If you dread that moment in meetings where everyone goes around and says their name, consider another route. My husband and I wrote the text of our vows— but on the big day, our officiant read them and all we had to say was “I do!” Amy Summerville, Ph.D, is a principal research scientist at Kairos Research LLC in Ohio and a former Associate Professor at Miami University who has published numerous scientific papers on the psychology of regret.

TwoWeeks& Counting It’s crunch time, just days before the wedding. Here’s how to cross everything off your to-do list without losing your mind.
T
here’s the bride who spends two years planning her wedding. And the couple who weds mere months after becoming engaged. Most brides fall somewhere in between, yet all three planning scenarios have one crucial thing in common: a two-week pre-wedding countdown time, crammed with unanticipated planning tasks, stress galore and moments of pure panic. When you get engaged, you experience an initial flurry of wedding planning, centering on when and where the event will occur. Once that’s out of the way, however, many brides are left with a quieter period of at least a few months. A number of things happen during this time—choosing vendors, buying wedding attire, sending out the invitations—but, inevitably, many of the most important tasks must wait until the end. Fortunately, there are ways that you can make a hectic time smoother, says Leah Ingram, author of Plan Your Wedding in No Time. “Try to avoid procrastinating throughout the planning process,” she says. “Otherwise, you’ll feel crazed just when you should be wrapping up your wedding plans and looking forward to a wonderful big day.” Getting near the home stretch? Whether you’ve been Miss Organized all along or are just getting started, we can help.
MAKE IT LEGAL It’s too bad you can’t get your marriage license early on in the process, but in most cases it is good only for a short period of time, meaning you have to head to city hall within a few days of your wedding. Be sure to call ahead to find out the fee and to be certain that you have all the documents you need. 34 BRIDALGUIDE.COM May/June 2024
FIRST, MAKE A LIST. And check it, well, every day. Be as detailed as you have to be, writing down everything from “call caterer” to “pack nail file.” Says one recent bride, “I’m a naturally disorganized person, and out of anxiety I was constantly writing things on a list. The problem I had toward the end was that my list kept getting longer and more overwhelming!” To avoid this predicament, it’s important to… DELEGATE! Even if you’ve been a one-woman (or, okay, one-couple) planning show until this crunch period, it’s time to share the joy. Bridesmaids, mom, friends, whoever’s been asking to help should be pulled off the bench and pressed into service. They can: make phone calls to confirm times and arrangements with your band or DJ, photographer and transportation company; help write escort cards; make and/or wrap favors and gifts; assemble programs; and lots more.
PHOTOGRAPHY: THE DAY COLLECTIVE
TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS. If you’re changing your name, call your town or city’s courthouse to find out the process (usually there’s a form you can download). Don’t forget: driver’s license, passport, Social Security card, credit cards. Also, change your beneficiaries for investment accounts and insurance plans. If you are moving, put in a change-of-address card at the post office, or do it online, at usps.com/moversguide. GET GUEST-READY. If you are hosting out-of-towners, reconfirm any hotel or transportation arrangements. Assemble gift baskets for hotel rooms (this is a good task to delegate). And, it’s a pain, but it happens to almost every bride and groom: There are always guests who don’t respond by the RSVP date. Someone (again, delegate) has to get in touch with these laggards and be sure to get an answer out of everyone.
DON’T FORGET YOURSELF DATE YOUR FIANCÉ. Most couples get so busy with wedding tasks, they forget to spend time together. Even a sneak-away lunch can make you feel romantic again. HIT THE SPA. Along with your prewedding beauty treatments, throw in a relaxing massage or reflexology treatment, and you’ve got a nice just-for-you package. GO TO THE BEACH. OR THE PARK. Or wherever you can connect with nature. You may want to bring along a parent, a sibling or a girlfriend for some calm time together. PICK YOUR NIGHT-BEFORE SLEEPING SPOT CAREFULLY. If spending the night in your childhood bed feels right, do that. But if your family’s going to keep you up, forget it. Get a hotel room alone or with a bridesmaid—or forgo tradition and stay with your fiancé. The point is to find the best place to get your beauty sleep.
of getting crucial personal items—the cake knife, toasting glasses—to and from your reception site. Put another bridesmaid in charge of divvying up tips for your vendors into envelopes to distribute on the day of the wedding.
DOUBLE-CHECK ALL THE ATTIRE YOU’LL NEED. When you go for your final dress fitting, don’t forget to bring along the undergarments you’ll actually be wearing on your wedding day, just to be sure that, for example, there aren’t any potentially embarrassing bra or panty lines visible beneath a clingy dress. At home, walk around in your wedding shoes a few times to avoid big-day blisters that can really cramp your style. Also, consider other items of clothing that GIVE YOUR CATERER you and your groom will need. If it helps, A FINAL HEAD COUNT. write it all down, even the things you’re This very important task should be taken care of a week to several days prior to absolutely sure you would never forget. the wedding, so that the caterer can order (We know of a groom who conscientiously the right amount of food and accurately packed all his underwear for his honeytally your final bill. This is also a good time moon and was left without a single clean to appoint a reliable bridesmaid in charge pair to wear on the wedding day!)
TAKE YOUR SEATS. With your final guest list in hand, start on the seating arrangements. Begin with the easy tables—parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles, close friends in natural groupings (work, college and so on). Then, gather up the harder-to-place guests (single pals and relatives) and sprinkle them in empty spots throughout your tables, preferably, of course, with a few other people they already know. GET HONEYMOON-READY. Call to confirm all of your travel arrangements, pack (or, if you’ll have plenty of post-wedding time to do this chore, pull out the necessary clothes you’re taking along for your destination) and be sure all of your important travel documents are in a safe place. Also, be sure that both you and your fiancé know where they are. Two heads are better than one! PUT TOGETHER A BIG-DAY EMERGENCY KIT. The kit may “contain everything from tampons, hairspray, extra pantyhose and combs, to pain relievers, antacid, clear nail polish, breath freshener, a small sewing kit, spare earring backs, safety pins and deodorant,” advises Ingram. “Even if brides never end up needing anything in their kits, having everything on hand always seems to help them relax and enjoy themselves. It’s worth the trouble!” ENVISION THE DAY. Sit down with your fiancé, your parents and the officiant to map out the big-day schedule so you can catch and correct potential glitches. Write down each step, if that seems helpful (many brides find this gives them a sense of control). Make sure that everyone in the bridal party knows exactly what their jobs are and where they need to be at specific times. One bride we know did this before her wedding, and suddenly realized that the chapel had no foyer, leaving no obvious spot for her dad and her to “hide” while guests were being seated. They came up with a plan: to linger for as long as possible at another location within walking distance until they got a signal from a groomsman that the time was right. ¢

efore she even met her now-husband, Harry Booth, the bride had chosen the wedding venue. Says Katie O’Mahoney Booth of Lowndes Grove: “It all started while attending the College of Charleston. I was dropping off one of my best friends, who was working at a wedding there. I knew this was where I would get married one day.” Flash forward a few years past graduation to a Christmas party held annually by Katie’s parents. “Harry was in town for his brother’s wedding to a friend of mine. I was alerted to the cute younger brother coming over from England. I am so happy Harry walked through the door that night— it was meant to be!”
52 BRIDALGUIDE.COM MAY/JUNE 2024
Just two weeks after Harry left the States, Katie booked a flight to see him, and the relationship flourished over time and much trans-atlantic travel. Harry proposed in 2020 in England, and a year later, the two celebrated stateside with Katie’s parents, kicking off a yearlong countdown to the wedding day.
“Charleston is a special place. My father is a C of C grad, and my parents were married and lived in their first home there. Harry and I started our marriage in the place my parents started theirs,” Katie says adding, “I love that Lowndes Grove is both waterside and still downtown—the best of both worlds. And the sunsets at the dock were a huge bonus.”

“Pink is my favorite color, as anyone who knows me can attest,” Katie says. “Pink everywhere was the decor goal.” Green played a part in the palette as well. The bridesmaids wore emerald green velvet dresses—as did the mother-of-the-bride’s ‘maids years earlier. Green velvet couches, pink cushions, strawberry mojitos and cucumber gin fizzes rounded out the color story.

Katie walked down the aisle to Rewrite the Stars. “It’s one of Harry’s favorite songs from a film we both watched on our long flights back and forth visiting each other.” Katie’s mom chose to honor her parents with What the World Needs Now, sung by Dionne Warwick. “The song my mom walked to. She loves the message it sends out to the world.”

Swinging in Panama.
On a private island in the pristine and untouched Bocas del Toro archipelago off the coast of Panama lies this intimate adults-only, sustainable paradise. Treehouse accommodations here are constructed of local bamboo and reclaimed, petrified hardwoods extracted from the Panama Canal, and are powered by the sun. All have open-air living spaces, outdoor showers and deep soaking tubs. Pulley systems are leveraged for room service. Sixteen wooden villas, which are suspended over water and encompass private outdoor pools and firepits, complete the accommodations (room rates start at $1,300 a night and are all inclusive; nayarabocasdeltoro.com).

Suspended nearly 40 feet above the South African bush is this fully solar-powered villa. Set three miles from the main safari lodge, this special perch is booked by the night and comes equipped with a stocked bar, midnight snacks and a dedicated attendant. The accommodation itself is replete with a rooftop deck with an outdoor bed and lounge for a private honeymoon dinner and unbeatable stargazing. There’s also an outdoor shower and, of course, those views (room rates start at about $499 a night and are all inclusive; andbeyond.com).
Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi
Romance rules in the Maldives.
CHEWTON GLEN This classic manor hotel in the English countryside has all the marquee trappings of a grand 18th century estate including a large main house, multiple eateries with a celebrated high tea service and plenty of spots for repose across the 130 acres of pastoral grounds. The property’s 14 treehouses are one of the marquee attractions. Suspended 35 feet above the ground, each is outfitted with indoor/outdoor living spaces, storybook views and dedicated concierge services. Spa treatments are offered in suite, or sign up for one of the evening packages in the spa, which showcases an amazing sunset view (room rates start at about $550 a night; chewtonglen.com).
In the paradise found destination of the Maldives, all the resort properties share a dreamy, fantastical quality. And since most are on private islands, each hideaway has a distinctive swept away, cocoon-like feel that’s unlike any other on the planet. Among all the spectacular offerings on this archipelago, this 119 villa property offers an unparalleled dining experience in handcrafted bamboo spheres that seemingly float among the treetops. Called Tera, the restaurant serves seven-course tasting menus to only seven couples a service (room rates start at about $1,700 a night; waldorfastoriamaldives.com).
FUN FACT: The oldest known record of a treehouse built for pleasure comes from Ancient Rome, where it is said that Caligula crafted a dining room in a tree for a banquet.

Booking an all-inclusive is a honeymoon dream come true. Use this glossary to figure out which property is best for you. by Jenna Mahoney
rguably the best part of the wedding is celebrating just the two of you on your honeymoon. And after a year (or more!) spent planning, saving, and sweating the details, it’s no wonder booking into an all-inclusive resort is at the top of most couples’ happily-ever-after list. It also helps that many of these paradise properties are located in the Caribbean, a magical island region that’s ripe with sun-streaked days, balmy nights and endless miles of pristine beaches. Yet, like a relationship, these properties come with their own (love) language. Before you and your partner say “I do” to a special spot in the sun, get to know the key terms used when choosing, booking and staying at an all-inclusive. Now all you’ll need to decide is whether to have your piña colada poolside or on the beach.
INCLUDED: An all-inclusive resort booking means accommodations, all meals, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, on-property amenities like fitness centers, kids’ clubs, and pools, entertainment, non-motorized beach sports, Wi-Fi, taxes, and tips are in a single, pre-paid rate. It’s common for a property to offer premium amenities or packages that upgrade your stay— such as top-shelf spirits, suites with on-call butlers and private plunge pools, or a daily spa treatment.

AFTER GETTING ENGAGED AT Keyhole Arch at Pfeiffer State Beach in Big Sur, Daphne Barahona and Nathan Gauther zeroed in on eloping in New Zealand, mainly for its epic scenery. “Then we decided to plan a big traditional wedding in Santa Barbara,” explains Daphne, a Texas native who now lives in California with her husband. “We actually were pretty deep into Plan B before changing our minds one last time and realizing we wanted to focus on just us for our special day, and elope.” Since the bride always wanted to experience the unparalleled beauty and impeccable service of Ailia Ventana Big Sur, they ended up where they started. “Ultimately we wanted one, an epic natural setting; two, easy travel and logistics; three, luxurious accommodations,” says the bride, and they got it all, along with spectacular memories and equally impressive photos.
The couple hiked to their ceremony spot.
“Don’t miss the Japanese Bath House—it’s so gorgeous. The open-air bathhouse was built in the tradition of those in Japan. There are his-and-her sides and it is positioned near the property’s pretty pool.”

“The days we were there, the marine layer [low altitude clouds that meet the ocean] was pretty heavy. At the resort’s Sunset Happy Hours they offered the Marine Layer Cocktail (tasted kind of like a French 75) with a smoke bubble over the glass. It was perfect.”
“I do.”
Daphne says one of her favorite memories was getting ready together.

In addition to spectacular natural surroundings, Nate and Daphne were drawn to the epic offerings and stellar service at Ailia Ventana Big Sur, a jewel box of a property that’s seamlessly positioned on a verdant mountainside overlooking the majestic Pacific Ocean. The couple chose a cottage house as their accommodation for the length of their elopement-moon. “It was absolutely perfect,” says Daphne. “It was secluded and spacious enough for both of us to get ready the day of our ceremony,” she explains. “There is a massive balcony overlooking the redwoods, a hot tub, and even a vintage record player. On their wedding night, “the concierge team set up an elaborate rose petal and candle display and had vintage Frank Sinatra playing on the stereo.” ➺ 65

hile the story of how exactly they met is debatable, Brooke Willams-Swan and Craig Swan Jr. agree on their style (Brooke’s engagement ring is from Tiffany), and their appreciation of the timeless appeal of classical architecture and sophisticated hospitality. The couple, who now live in San Francisco, have been together since their days at Kansas State, and they wished to celebrate their nuptials someplace close to their families. “We wanted our wedding to be timeless and sophisticated and were heavily inspired by classic elements and places that had stood the test of time,” explains Brooke. And that started with their venue. “We chose Hotel Kansas City in downtown Kansas City, Missouri because of its location, rich history, historical look and modern updates.”

details. While they may feel subtle, they truly create the extraordinary. “We rented a 1955 Bentley to take us around downtown while we talked and sipped Champagne,” says Brooke. “It was a detail that fit the inspiration for the wedding; it was also a detail that allowed us to just enjoy some of the day alone together.” Another favorite—and romantic—touch was a rose installation, which cascaded across and down the fireplace in the venue. “We also had the ceremony, dinner and dancing by candlelight, which helped us capture a warm and intimate feel,” explains Brooke. ➺
“My bouquet was wrapped in a gold wristwatch and a gold ring that belonged to my grandmothers who have passed away. The ring had been worn by every woman in the family at her wedding.”

Kansas City is one of the leading BBQ destinations in the country. Residents are quick to point out their hometown has the highest number of reviewed restaurants dedicated to the style, and everyone’s got a favorite place to savor smoked meats and pile on the sides. Settling on which eatery is the best in town is a heavy lift. The couple and their friends and family appear to agree on Jack Stacks BBQ. “Our favorite restaurant is great for a date night, family night, lunch, etc.,” says Brooke.
“HKC has many Instagrammable spaces but our favorite was the grand staircase that rises from the lobby to additional floors. It houses an oversized chandelier that’s gorgeous. It’s the perfect place to take romantic photos.”

Sea of Love THINKING ABOUT A HONEYMOON CRUISE? THESE TIPS HELP YOU SELECT THE BEST. By Donna Heiderstadt
A stately vessel.
HERE’S SOMETHING INHERENTLY ROMANTIC ABOUT TAKING A CRUISE— setting sail on the open water, lingering over the endless horizon and stopping to experience some of the globe’s most enticing destinations, all while experiencing its beauty both off and on the ship. And as a honeymoon, a cruise is also easy and exciting. You’ll unpack once and yet experience a different port almost daily. The experiences do vary greatly by ship and destination, however, so here are some tips to booking the best for you. Ahoy!
PHOTOGRAPHY: VIRGIN VOYAGES
DETERMINE YOUR DESTINATION
Where to cruise and when? Cruise itineraries are generally set to align with the most favorable weather patterns, so you know you’re likely to experience little precipitation and smooth sailing. Top routes and their timing include: the Eastern, Western and Southern Caribbean (November— June), Hawaii (year-round), the Mexican Riviera (November—May), the Mediterranean and Greek Isles (May—October), Bermuda (April— July) and Tahiti (May—November). For a more adventurous experience consider cruising Alaska’s Inside Passage (June—September).
CHOOSE THE RIGHT SHIP
Cruise ships come in all sizes, with the smallest vessels from Windstar, Sea Dream Yacht Club, Paul Gauguin Cruises and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht
Collection carrying 100 to 350 guests, and the largest from Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Carnival, Princess, Celebrity and Virgin Voyages accommodating 2,500 to 6,000-plus. Two general rules: The bigger the ship, the livelier the vibe, and the newer the ship, the higher the price. Consider speaking with a travel advisor before booking to help understand tariffs and inclusions.
SELECT A STATEROOM
Ships have multiple accommodations categories. The four most basic are interior (no window); oceanview (a window but no balcony); balcony or veranda (small private balcony) and suite, which means both the interior spaces and balconies are larger. When you search for a cruise, the price you’ll likely see first is for an interior stateroom, unless a ship does not offer them. Balcony staterooms are popular and almost always cost more.
UNDERSTAND THE AMENITIES
Most popular contemporary cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, and premium lines, such as Celebrity and Windstar, offer a base fare and you’ll pay extra for beverages, crew gratuities, Wi-Fi and specialty dining. You’ll sometimes see deals with some of these amenities included.
5 CRUISE TERMS TO KNOW Ships have their own lingo… here are some basics
• PORT: Left side of the ship. • STARBOARD: Right side of the ship. • GANGWAY: Where you get on and off the ship.
• TENDER: To be ferried ashore in a
smaller boat when the ship’s at anchor.
• MUSTER: The safety briefing required of all passengers.

Local Favorites MAGIC MOUNTAIN Based on the success of the Olympic winter sport team and the movie that followed their journey, visitors get the chance to whiz down a mountain in a bobsled via a 1,000-meter-long suspended track. DUNN’S RIVER FALLS Don your water shoes and climb up the emblematic cascades. Note: If the locale seems familiar it’s likely from the movies—Cocktail and Dr. No, among others, were filmed here. ISLAND ROUTES BAMBOO RIVER RAFT The resort’s sister company offers an endless menu of excursions including this tranquil option, which leads guests down a crystalline river on a relaxing float.

HE SUN-STREAKED CARIBBEAN ISLAND OF JAMAICA is synonymous with One Love, unbeatable coffee and the ultimate resort brand that truly centers on romance—Sandals. Launched just over 30 years ago, the family-run chain recently debuted an uber-luxe outpost in one of their favorite spots—Dunn’s River, Jamaica, a sparkling stretch of beach where founder, the late Gordon “Butch” Stewart, first planted his resort flag. The modern retreat flaunts 260 accommodations with a variety of new room categories, including the Tufa Terrace skypool butler suites, with private infinity pools overlooking the placid Caribbean waters; A chic room. the Mammee Bay beachfront butler suites with unparalleled sunset views; and the reimagined Rondoval Suites with butler service. A host of brand new amenities are also available at the gleaming resort. There’s the new coffee bar, BLUM, which offers only-in-Jamaica Blue Mountain beans in a variety of preparations, as well as delectable pastries and other tasty accompaniments. Flights of rum are the big draw at Dunn’s River Rum Club, while the polished Lapidus Lounge, named for the architect of the original Sandals, excels at Manhattan cocktails. As at other locations, there’s an outpost of a Jamaican Jerk shack, and nabbing a reservation at sushi spot Hamani is a must (room rates start at $347 a night per Romance rules person and are all inclusive; sandals.com). at Sandals. —Jenna Mahoney
