Our response cards are due in less than a week and about 25 guests still have not RSVP’d. Our caterer needs a head count. What’s the best way to light a fire under these late-responders? Email? Phone? Why not both? Immediately reach out to all laggards via email. Next, follow up with a phone call. You can ask your fiancé, both sets of parents (especially if any of the non-respondents are their friends and relatives) and your attendants to pitch in as well. A phone call conveys a sense of urgency that’s hard to ignore, so you’ll probably get a quicker response. It’s likely many of these invitees do intend to come— either they had all good intentions of sending in their RSVPs but let it slide or perhaps their response cards are already in the mail. No matter the reason, you’ll be relieved to get a head count for your caterer.

AT-HOME WEDDING TIPS
Q
My fiancé and I would like to have a tented wedding at my parents’ home. They have a huge backyard and we are hoping it will be more cost-effective. Is it? That depends. While an at-home wedding can be lovely and unique, there are a number of details that may not prove as cost-effective as you’d like. Rental fees are required for the tent, tables, chairs, linens, silverware and glassware, for example. You will also need to rent a refrigeration truck and a dance floor. Depending on the weather, you might need heating lamps, fans or an air-conditioning unit. There should be adequate restrooms available for guests so you may be required to rent portable facilities. Light as air, this glamorous gown is surprisingly effortless as it gently embraces every curve, feathers catching the breeze in a delicately mesmerizing dance.
flower power No wedding day look is complete without a gorgeous bouquet. Our friends at Winston Flowers sure know how to meet the moment. Senior Event Designer, Jillian Elliott, selected bright, saturated colors that work especially well in autumn, when Mother Nature is giving dramatic colors as well. This bouquet is a mix of blue delphinium, purple phalaenopsis orchids, and red and green hanging amaranths—all blooms that are available almost year-round.
“When choosing a bridal bouquet style be sure to pick something that speaks to you and makes you happy. The engagement ring was hidden under the seat of Tom’s car for months, as he waited for the perfect opportunity to pop the question to Sara. It finally happened at a lobster dinner with their families, after a day spent on the waves. (Timing is everything when it comes to surfing.) The couple’s passion for the sport lay at the heart of their vision for the big day—starting with the cliffside ceremony at Camp Hero Bluff overlooking Montauk’s Turtle Cove, AKA “Turtles,” a surf spot beloved by locals and visitors alike.

Naturally beachy tones—sand, white, ocean and sky blue—prevailed, the decor bedecked with flowers throughout. And if the circular ceremony arch of roses wasn’t enough, hanging above the head table was a surfboard draped in garlands of flowers and greenery, as were two lucky golden retrievers. The custom edible escort cards displayed on surfboards were actually chocolate-covered rice-krispie treats decorated to look like tins of surfboard wax. Lily-of-the-valley moments could be found on Sara’s Monique Lhuillier gown and her beaded clutch, while elements of wicker and raffia underscored the beach vibe along with gilt-edged shell placecards. CALEB BLACKERBY

T
he team at Indianapolis-based First Class Designs, the creative design house of Fitzgerald Hospitality, led by founder, CEO and lead planner Caleb Caleb Blackerby Blackerby, would like couples to look to them as their “wedding and event mentors and biggest supporters,” dedicated to infusing celebrations with elegance and romance (and fun!) while being true to each couple’s unique story. Nine years of running a catering company gave Blackerby a window into the whirlwind world of weddings. But what he saw often fell short of his own expectations of what a wedding could be. Says Blackerby, “Wedding planners tried to fit every wedding into the same easy box, instead of celebrating the unique tastes and qualities of each couple on their big day.” With high expectations and a crystal-clear vision of what makes for a memorable and magical wedding, Blackerby went on to launch First Class Designs in January of 2020—and has been giving clients the star treatment ever since!
OUR POINT OF DIFFERENCE
• “We like to push the envelope. After years of attending conferences and hearing the same jokes about trends taking three to five years to hit the Midwest, I decided to assemble a team capable of executing those concepts now, and relied on my ability to convince clients to ‘take the risk.’ Essentially, I’m the one you hire to convince your mom to let you have the wedding you really want.”
Let’s do this!
KEY TO SUCCESS
• “Willingness to try and fail! Over my time in the industry, I’ve noticed that the truly innovative professionals aren’t typically embodied with overwhelming talent, but rather overwhelming belief that they can figure anything out.”
A WORD FOR OUR COUPLES
• “There is no right answer! It doesn’t matter how anyone else has thrown their wedding, or what happened at your older sister’s wedding. All that matters is how you want to tell your story.”
WORKING OUR MAGIC
• “As part of a ceremony to reception room flip, we trans24 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Sept/Oct 2024

MY FAVORITE PART OF WEDDING PLANNING
• The first moment a couple sees their reception and realizes we made their dreams come true.
FAVORITE WEDDING TRADITION
• “The late-night snack! As a lifelong supporter of savory over sweet, ending the night with a fun and different greasy treat to soak up the booze is a perfect ending to a wedding.”
THE PERFECT WEDDING WEEKEND
• “I love a welcome party in lieu of a small rehearsal dinner. You get Bespoke details. such a limited amount of time with your extended family and friends that this is a great way to get to speak with them more.” Sharing the love. • “I also push against a traditional morning-after brunch, and instead prefer to rent out back rooms at restaurants, and let the couple be there for a few hours to meet and greet instead of trying to see everyone all at once.”
POST-PANDEMIC WEDDING EVOLUTION
• “We are still seeing significantly smaller guest lists than before the pandemic. Being in the Midwest, weddings were often 300+ guests because people still felt the need to invite their entire church congregation and extended family.” • “After the pandemic, we’re seeing considerably less of this—and a higher emphasis on an improved guest experience for a smaller number of guests. We did 18 weddings in 2023, will end up at around 30 in 2024, and hoping for 50 by 2025!”
LOOKING AHEAD
• “We have a lot of exciting developments, including the expansion of our geographic profile outside of the Indianapolis market, and into Louisville, Chicago, and more!”➺ 25

And does so with a flair for fashion Nakano and Shaley Bagan and a particular expertise in executing modern and timeless designs in gorgeous locations, from lush botanical gardens to sun-drenched beaches to exquisite private estates. That’s been the unique point of difference of San Francisco-based Downey Street Events, originally founded by two best friends who met while students at Stanford Law School, where they discovered they had a mutual love for planning events. Today Kelsey Connely, who began her tenure with Downey Street Events by assisting at their luxe customized weddings, is at the helm, having taken the lead as owner, creative director and principal planner and designer in January 2022. “We are more than just creatives,” says Kelsey. “We are true professionals, and our clients feel confident leaving their weddings in our hands.” So happy together.
WHY I LOVE WEDDINGS
• “The wedding day is a declaration of your love and commitment, as well as how you want to be presented and perceived as a couple. I don’t take this responsibility lightly, and when the rush and adrenaline kick in on the wedding day, there’s really no feeling like it!”
SECRETS OF SUCCESS
• “I believe I provide a unique level of calmness and comfort. I think my clients and their loved ones truly feel like an expertly capable friend is running the show on the day-of. My excitement for the couple and confidence in my team exude positivity.” • “Having everything buttoned up and organized perfectly allows me to remain super-relaxed in front of clients, creating an enjoyable process for them from start to finish.” 26 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Sept/Oct 2024

• “The design process. It’s so fulfilling and exciting to present my ideas to the clients, and then put together a rock-star team of vendors to provide the right pieces or build the perfect custom features.”
A WORD FOR COUPLES
• “TRUST your planners! It’s very easy to get in the weeds on every detail and to question your planner about each small element, contract term or logistical decision. But sometimes you just need to let go and remember that your planner has likely planned hundreds of weddings before. I promise it will make the process more relaxing!”
POST-PANDEMIC WEDDING EVOLUTION
• “There is much more of an emphasis on experience, celebration and the party of it all. Our average guest count now tends to be 150-175. We all learned so much during the pandemic and clients treasure their guests, their presence and their time even more now.”
DESTINATION CELEBRATIONS
Bird’s-eye view.
• “There was an unprecedented increase in destination weddings following the worst of the pandemic. The trend seems to be flattening out now that we are a few years from when the world could begin traveling again.”
GROWING STRONG
• “This past year, we grew as a team and continue to make strides in growing our brand. We are lucky enough to work with more and more clients who feel like fantastic fits for us as a company and who we want to be in the future.”
LOOKING AHEAD
Florals for (big) days.
• “We are thrilled with the recent launch this past spring of a bridal styling service as an optional service to clients, both internal and external.” • “We’re excited to put our wedding-planning expertise and love of fashion toward a service that we believe will only enhance the client experience even more, as we know full well how fashion choices truly impact the overall look and feel of a wedding day.” • “And of course, we are excited to continue planning and designing high-touch, luxury events all over California and beyond.” 27
Perfect Planning Ensure a goof-proof wedding with these expert tips and strategies. BY MARY CLARKE

Outdoors after dark
If your warm-weather soirée will stretch into the night, you need to prepare for insects as well as a drop in temperature. Ask your venue to light citronella candles around the perimeter or lounge area. For one outdoor wedding, we had cute little buckets set up with day-into-evening essentials: sunscreen, bug spray, flip flops, hand-held paper fans, and pashminas. —Andrea Freeman, founder & principal designer, Andrea Freeman Events
Inadequate Technical Support There’s nothing worse than sitting through a ceremony you can’t hear, so be sure to book a sound system. Being able to hear the ceremony means your guests will actually be able to be in the moment right along with you. A wireless system ensures there will be no unsightly mic stands in your photos. —Michelle Cousins, owner & lead designer, Michelle Leo Events
PHOTOGRAPHY: B-FREED PHOTOGRAPHY/ B-FREEDWEDDINGS.COM
Obsessing It’s one thing to be detail-oriented, just don’t fall into overthinking every bit of minutiae. Obsessing over the types of mushrooms in the canapés or the precise order of the DJ’s playlist is a waste of time and good energy. —Marcy Blum, President, Marcy Blum Associates
Pre-ceremony prep
Food may be the last thing on your mind, but if you start getting ready hours before your ceremony and pre-wedding photos, and then don’t grab a bite until cocktail hour that can be bad news. You want to have a little something in your system before the party starts so that your first cocktail doesn’t go straight to your head or worse. —Andrea Freeman
Planning by Committee Couples can lose themselves trying to please others, especially their parents. While it’s important to plan an event that makes everyone happy, it is your wedding and should reflect your style, personality and relationship. —Jove Meyer, owner + creative director, Jove Meyer Events
Putting the dress before the venue We always advise booking the wedding venue before dress shopping. Why? Because your dress should complement the environment. A ballgown with a huge train isn’t appropriate for those rustic barn or mountainside weddings (not only will it not look right, snags are inevitable and large trains get filthy in seconds). —Michelle Cousins
Budget blunders
Don’t commit to a single thing for your wedding until you’ve set a budget. All too often, I see heartbroken couples who booked a venue that eats up 75% of their budget and then we have to tell them the photographer of their dreams is out of reach. Don’t just settle on some arbitrary number: Do your due diligence and cost research first so you can arrive at a budget that will work. Google is your friend here! —Kate Turner, founder, Kate + Co. Events Steer clear of dumping too much money into decor and not paying attention to the “experiential” elements such as enough service staff (especially bartenders), interesting music for the ceremony and cocktail hour, and decent wine. —Marcy Blum
Grass isn’t always your friend The best way to ensure you can dance the night away under a tent is to place a hard-surface floor over the grass. A simple solution like plywood is perfect: You will never notice it under all those dancing feet, but I guarantee you and your guests will be happy to feel it. —Bryan Rafanelli, founder + chief creative officer, Rafanelli Events

Venue selection
Always book your venue before selecting your wedding date. Otherwise you run the risk of setting the date only to find the venue you had your heart set on isn’t available.—Michelle Cousins Booking a venue before you make your final guest list is a huge mistake. If you book a space that is too small, you will have to lower your guest count or possibly book another venue and lose the deposit of the one you booked prematurely. —Jove Meyer
Estimating RSVPs
Many couples still believe that 20 percent of their guest list will RSVP regrets, but this is an outdated planning rule. Only invite the amount of people your venue and budget allow. Here in wine country, where 90% of our celebrations are destination weddings, almost everyone RSVPs with pleasure. So assume everyone will say yes—and plan accordingly. —Brittany Westerman, owner & creative director, Reed & James Events
No Rain Plan Weather is always a variable no matter the time of year. If you are thinking about an outdoor wedding, be prepared. Even if no rain has ever fallen on that day in that location in history— ever! Having a solid poor-weather plan almost guarantees you won’t need it. And that’s what makes the happiest day of all! —Bryan Rafanelli 29

While there’s never an optimum time to experience loss of income, dealing with a contracted cash flow just when you’re putting together a wedding budget can seem like an almost insurmountable challenge. But this budget shortfall need not signal the end of the wedding of your dreams. With some organization, creativity and small adjustments, your wedding can still go on with nary a hitch. Help is at hand. 30 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Sept/Oct 2024

START AT THE BOTTOM LINE Those once-in-a-lifetime wedding memories may be priceless, but every single wedding line item comes with a price tag. Unfortunately, loss of income means having to take a fresh look at the budget. Big-day elements may have to be downsized, become DIY projects or jettisoned. • SIT DOWN WITH YOUR FIANCÉ and analyze your finances. “It’s unromantic, but you need to take emotions out of it,” says Cindy Shanholtz, owner and creative director of Effortless Events in Chicago. “Then, get down to business and make it work.” • TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT THE COST of your needs, likes and wants and determine what money will be coming in from sources such as unemployment benefits or even help from your parents. • SHANHOLTZ SUGGESTS TAKING your projected wedding budget and dividing by the number of guests. She says people are often surprised by the results once they realize the cost per person. Catering typically takes the largest
“
ANALYZE YOUR CONTRACTS So you’ve revised your budget and have some cost-cutting ideas in mind. Where do you go from here? The next step is to analyze contracts you’ve already signed to look for wiggle room. • WHEN NEGOTIATING contracts, you want to sign off on the minimum number of guests possible, Shanholtz says. “It’s much easier to add guests to a contract than it is to subtract.” • BOOKING VENDORS far enough in advance should allow you to make changes as your planning timeline unfolds. But once the contract is signed your negotiating power will be diminished to a great extent. That said, explaining your financial situation to your vendors can lead to price adjustments even on contracts that have been signed. Take for example Anne S., a recent bride who was able to
work out a deal with her photographer to get a lower rate by paying for his services in cash. Some vendors may be willing to renegotiate contracted prices if you agree to pay in full at an earlier date than originally agreed upon. • IF A CONTRACT IS ALREADY signed, speak with your vendor about making adjustments as needed: be it working with a lower head count, shifting the wedding date or tweaking the food and beverage offerings. “Most people are understanding and want repeat business,” Shanholtz says, adding, “The majority of vendors are going to work with you.”
chunk of the budget, making slicing and dicing your guest list the number-one way to cut costs. Says Shanholtz: “Invitations shouldn’t go out until you are six to eight weeks out from your wedding so if the job loss happens earlier on in the planning, trimming your guest list is the first and best place to start.” • NEXT, LOOK AT ADDITIONAL cost-saving measures. An easy one is to nix the favors. “Unless you can eat it or drink it, I don’t recommend favors,” Shanholtz says. Hosting your wedding at less traditional dates and times can reduce budgets as well. Weekday weddings will be less expensive than weekend celebrations, as will weddings held earlier in the day for brunch. And more food for thought: “An omelet will always be cheaper than a filet,” says Shanholtz.
“
As you reach out to prospective vendors, keep in mind there will be additional costs that aren’t spelled out in your contract. Whatever price you are quoted from a vendor is always ‘plus plus,’ meaning plus gratuity and plus tax. You don’t want to go over budget because you forgot to figure those extra costs.
“
“
Employed or not, the months leading up to your wedding will provide much excitement and delight. So instead of focusing on the problems inherent in juggling finances, job hunting, and, yes, wedding planning, remember the memories you’ll be creating together that will last a lifetime.
31
Career experts emphasize the importance of maintaining a regular routine when you’re job-hunting, whether it be waking up at the same time every day or dedicating your afternoons to sending out resumes. Add in wedding planning and your days, evenings and weekends will fill up fast.
• “MY JOB HUNT WAS PRIORITY NUMBER ONE,” says recent bride Jennifer G. Yet she was able to put the upside of being jobless to good use. “In between resume edits, internet searches, job boards, LinkedIn connections and applications, there was time to call vendors or go to the craft store so I could execute that Pinterest-perfect centerpiece.” Jennifer, who threw a surprise wedding while unemployed, created her own centerpieces, ceremony pillars, easels, and marquee lights. Her husband even got involved by assisting with decorating invitations. • “INTERVIEWING IS LIKE GOING ON A BAD DATE, so wedding-planning activities kept me sane and helped break up the stress,” explains Anne, who was unemployed at start of her engagement, only to find the roles reversed when she found a job and her fiancé lost his. He used some of his new-found free time to refresh skills by completing a coding boot camp while Anne immersed herself in the upcoming big-day details. • GETTING TOGETHER WITH FRIENDS for an evening of wedding DIY can help keep the mood light and costs down. Before you invite your crew over for a night of crafting surprise-ball favors and fun escort cards, “Keep in mind that just because you have time on your hands that doesn’t mean your family, friends and bridal party will be available to hang out with you,” reminds Shanholtz.
MAKE CONNECTIONS AS YOU PLAN In being open with people you meet on the wedding-planning front, you’ll find cost-cutting tips, advice and emotional support. You might even find a job! Think about it. Planning a wedding requires multiple meetings and loads of collaboration. That means lots of networking opportunities and a lot of people who may know about job openings in your area of expertise. • “OPPORTUNITY IS EVERYWHERE. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT,” says Dara Lynn Smith, who was unemployed during the final months of her wedding planning. Dara didn’t hold back when it came to discussing her job loss. By being very vocal about her situation she was able to score a few side gigs to supplement her income such as dog walking and reviewing local restaurants while searching for a new position. While the side gigs weren’t a career, they helped Dara fill financial holes and eventually made her realize her career calling was actually in….. weddings! “I bounced ideas off vendors and kept in touch with my wedding planner after the big day,” Dara explains. With the blessing of her husband and wedding planner, she decided to create and make the operation of her wedding blog—The First Look (TheFirstLookBlog.com)—her career focus. While every vendor may not inspire a new career, your openness and honesty may help you find a familiar story. 32 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Sept/Oct 2024

PRACTICE SELF-CARE Job loss can trigger feelings of inadequacy, emptiness and confusion. Be kind to yourself. If you are the one who’s without a job, don’t neglect your own self-care. If it’s your partner, take care to underscore that they still add much value to the relationship—with or without a job. Pamper yourself in between planning seating charts, designing decor and updating LinkedIn profiles. Anne found serenity in getting in shape for the wedding. “Working out consistently was key to my mental and physical well-being.” And of course, pay attention to the health of your relationship. Think of this hiccup as practice for issues to come, says Vikki Ziegler, relationship expert and author of The Pre-Marital Planner. Ziegler suggests taking a moment to remember why you fell in love: “This is the perfect time to look to your upcoming marriage vows—whether you’ve already written them or have yet to create them. Let them serve as a reminder of why you love each other and the promise you’re making to each other to sustain that love,” Ziegler says.
• KEEP THE FOCUS on all the good that comes with weddings. Employed or not, getting married is such an exciting time. Instead of zoning in on the problems of juggling wedding plans, budget management and job hunting, remember the memories you’ll be creating together that will last a lifetime.

Things I Learned About Weddings
BY CATE DOTY
From Writing for The New York Times
Big weddings, small weddings, weddings that ended in divorce — I’ve seen them all. I started working in wedding catering as a teenager, and after college, I went to work for The New York Times’ society desk, where I wrote wedding announcements for some of America’s most famous (and infamous) couples. I even wrote a book about it. So you could say I know a bit about weddings: the before, the during, and what happens the day after. After more than 20 years, I’ve learned a few things about weddings and how important it is, after all the fuss and flowers, to focus on what’s in front of you: the person you love.
1
Something will go wrong. It’s going to be fine. It poured buckets on our wedding day, an outdoor
spring affair with dinner under a pavilion. Oh, and my husband disappeared the morning of our wedding. But we had the foresight to buy a bunch of umbrellas, and Michael’s groomsmen eventually found him in the hot tub at his hotel, where he was trying to recover from a hangover. Things will happen on your wedding day that you didn’t plan for; some might be funny, and others might not. But keep your eye on the prize: You’re getting married to the person you love with your whole heart. The things that you’re working so hard on right now are going to be great, and even if your printer messed up the place cards, your guests will still figure out where to sit.
2
Everything you’re feeling is OK. Planning
PHOTOGRAPHY: © BAXTER MILLER 2020
a wedding, and getting married, will be one of the most emotional experiences you’ll ever have. Every emotion you’re experiencing right now — happy, sad, fearful, loving, angry, frustrated — this is all normal, and all expected. I cried a lot before I got married, and at what felt like the craziest things: trying on my wedding ring, for example, or walking to a yoga class. But a wedding is the ending of something, and the beginning of something else — one of life’s greatest traditions, and also one it its biggest changes. Let yourself feel what you need to feel, and lean on your friends and family. But that said...
3
Be kind, for everyone you know is fighting a great battle. That might sound a little dramatic.
But when you’re in the throes of wedding planning, it can be hard to remember that not everyone is as singularly focused as you are on your wedding. Your wedding dress fitter has faced the tantrums of many brides, but she’s still on the floor, pinning your dress to your specifications. Your caterer can’t control the food supply chain to your exact specifications, but they’ll work with you as best they can. Your attendant who lost their job during the pandemic might not be able to afford
the outfit you selected, but they still want to be there for you on your day. A little perspective and kindness, even when you feel like so much is being asked of you, can go a long way to a happier wedding — and help you avoid emotional fallout after you get back from your honeymoon.
4
Drink water. I’m serious. I had a pounding
headache by the end of my wedding, and it was because I hadn’t drunk enough water that evening. We had a spectacular waitstaff who cleared dishes and glasses attentively, but that also meant my water glass walked off before I got a chance to drain it. Pair it with alcohol, buy yourself a “bride only” water bottle and put it under your chair. Then, task one of your trusty attendants with the single goal of making sure you have a full glass of water at all times — do whatever you need to do. Drink water. Trust me. Your body will thank you later.
5
If you think your wedding is going to be the best day of your life, wait until you see what happens next. Because in the end, that’s
what it’s all about, right? As much as we want our weddings to be the perfect day for us, we can’t forget what’s on the other side of it: a marriage, with all the joys and complications that life can bring. I’ve been married 14 years, and life has thrown a lot at us: health scares, moves, job changes, funerals, miscarriage—and also some of the greatest happinesses and thrills a person can experience. Throughout everything, with all the joy and chaos that life can bring, we’ve had a home in each other’s arms. The vows we said Cate Doty’s memoir, in April 2010 remain the underpinnings Mergers and Acquisitions (G.P. Putnam’s Sons), of our life together, as a couple and takes a deep dive into her adventures as an a family. How lucky I am to be able to editor and writer at say that still. The New York Times.

Geetika Trevor

hen Geetika Srivastava and Trevor Schroeder first met, they were deep into their respective college programs (both are physicians), and free time was a luxury. Which explains some of the thinking behind Trevor’s stealthy actions when it came time to pop the question. It was Geetika’s 30th birthday, and Trevor wanted to do something special. Geetika was so busy she almost canceled, but Trevor prevailed. Before dinner, the couple stopped by Cleveland’s Cultural Gardens, where Trevor got down on one knee, his proposal caught on both film and video by Trevor’s brother and a friend.
52 BRIDALGUIDE.COM
“Looking back, I laugh at how I didn’t find this suspicious at all,” Geetika says. Blending Catholic and Hindu wedding traditions came as easily to the couple as had blending Geetika’s birthday with Trevor’s proposal, starting with the venue choice. “The Lift in downtown Dayton is both convenient and beautiful,” she says.
“We had two ceremonies,” Geetika says. “We kept them in their purest forms, but with a few important modifications. We did not hold a Mass after the Catholic ceremony because we wanted to make the day as inclusive as possible. We also changed the wording of both ceremonies to make it less patriarchal and have it more about valuing each other as equals.”

Says Geetika: “We were ultimately inspired by the idea of a garden party. Because our wedding day was in November, we went with some deeper tones, which went beautifully with the brighter, typical Indian colors. We wanted to make sure that we included elements of both our cultures: my colorful Indian roots and his rustic German American upbringing.”

There is no waiting period or blood test required to marry in Costa Rica. A lawyer should be enlisted to help with the paperwork, which includes presenting a valid passport and a completed questionnaire. If widowed or divorced, a bride may only marry 300 days (or more) after the decree or date on the death certificate. Two witnesses with valid passports are also required.

Las Catalinas, an intimate, car-free town with cobblestone streets and central fountains, is an on-trend beach-town hideaway that’s actually a planned community. Here, visitors are treated to a downshifting mentality where the accommodations, amenities and other offerings like the local public beach are all about savoring the surroundings. And there is much of that to treasure—just outside of the highly walkable town lies a collection of 26 miles of hiking and biking trails that lattice across the dense tropical foliage. And yes, there are howler monkeys, as well as jaguars.

LONG-DISTANCE RELATIONSHIPS ARE BOTH heavy on the romance and the logistics. And when it works, as it did for Adrienne Guariglia and Ben Landis (who, when dating, lived in Chicago and Pittsburgh, respectively), long distance sparks not only happily-ever-after but also awesome travel memories. “We fell head-over-heels in love” on a two-week trip to Costa Rica, they share. “Not only did we fall in love with each other but we fell in love with the culture, people, and pura vida lifestyle,” they say. “Costa Rica has it all, from mountains, rainforests, cloud forests, to spectacular beaches, volcanoes and stunning wildlife. For our wedding we wanted to capture the love we found there and share it with our closest friends and family.” And that’s just what they did.

They also offered local beers and a cocktail menu that featured bespoke blends of fresh botanical ingredients.

he romance of river cruising is undeniable—fairy-tale castles along the Rhine, lush vineyards sweeping down to the Rhône and ancient Egyptian temples flanking the Nile—so it makes sense that sailing the world’s most famous waterways holds considerable appeal to many. If you’re considering a river cruise for your honeymoon, here’s what you need to know about individual cruise lines, romantic rivers and the onboard experience. Honeymooning on a river cruise means that you’ll unpack once and yet visit several spectacular cities, and because ships dock in central locations, it’s easy to explore on your own. Ships are smaller (80 to 190 guests) and cruise fares, while higher than most ocean cruises, are mostly inclusive (covering meals, many or all beverages, some or most excursions and gratuities). Regional cuisine and wines are served onboard.

Begin your married life in beautiful settings along the Gulf of Mexico in Southwest Florida. Host your rehearsal dinner at a local restaurant, historic estate or sustainable farm. Head right into your honeymoon in natural settings that make you feel worlds away. Visit secluded islands—some of which are only accessible by boat—like North Captiva and Cabbage Key. Enjoy date night in the historic River District where you can have an intimate dinner before catching a performance by Florida Repertory Theatre. Book a romantic spa treatment for two at an award-winning location, like Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort and Spa or ‘Tween Waters Island Resort & Spa. Your Wedding at Sandals Resorts ®
Is a Story of Firsts
The first time you catch a tropical sunset, this time holding banded hands. The first time you cruise through life as one, on a catamaran overlooking lush mountains and serene seas. The first time you introduce yourself by a different name, at a swim-up bar or a beachside bonfire.
At a Sandals Resort, we create weddings that fulfill your Caribbean dream. Include the Caribbean in your island vision every step of the way by having localized wedding inspirations, such as our Jamaican Tropical Hues, to savory flavors from across the islands. Everything is taken care of by our expert wedding planners, allowing you to fall in love with each island moment so that you can focus on making memories together. But why should your day stop after your “I do?” Do as much—or as little — as you’d like. Spend your days sailing across azure waters, exploring colorful Caribbean towns or melting into a couples massage at our spa. From Jamaica to Barbados, and Grenada to our newest resort, Sandals Saint Vincent and
The Grenadines, each of our 18 resorts has its own unique charm, touting cultural activities, chances to get into nature, and so many places to relax and deepen your connection. With forever ahead, why not try something new? Take on the island of Exuma via ATVs before digging into a dish of Bahamian fried conch. In Barbados, tour a famed rum distillery and explore underground rivers and limestone caves. Head to Curaçao to take in all the colorful Dutch architecture and rich flavors of nearby Willemstad, where our Island Inclusive dining program gets you out of the resort and into some of the island’s most locally loved restaurants. lthough it dates to the 1500s, it wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine that when the word “bucolic” was first used it was in reference to the hills of Litchfield County, Connecticut, which hug the western border between the New England state and New York. Just over 100 miles from New York City, this region has all the marquee attributes of a quaint countryside setting. There are rolling hills dotted with farms, horses, goats and other animals, and the pastoral landscapes are punctuated with crystalline lakes enveloped by towering pines and latticed with hiking trails. And in its heart stands Winvian, a sprawling 113 acre property housing 18 cottages, each with a distinct personality, along with an ultra-pampering spa, a robust garden and a stellar food program that’s been named the best in the state on numerous occasions. Weddings here are the definition of storybook, with menus that are fairy tales fully realized. From planned elopements to bashes for 200, events at Winvian all spotlight the peerless food and wine program.
