etiquette ADVICE
A Q Wedding
&
Straight talk, smart solutions by Mary Clarke, Editor in Chief
REHEARSAL REQUIRED?
Q
Is it really necessary to have a rehearsal for our ceremony? We’d much rather keep it loose and not plan anything too formal. No matter how loose, laid-back or informal you want your ceremony to be, it’s still necessary to have a run-through sometime before the big day. You and your spouse-to-be, your officiant, your bridal party and any others involved in the ceremony such as your musicians need to know who does what—and when. Otherwise you run the risk of confusion and unnecessary agita on the wedding day. A rehearsal needn’t take long, and once it begins you’ll be relieved that all involved are fully versed in the protocol.
A
INVITATION ETIQUETTE
Q
I was surprised to receive an invitation to a friend’s wedding that was only addressed to me. She knows I’m engaged and has met my partner. Shouldn’t their name be on the invitation as well? The rule of thumb is to invite the partner of anyone who is married, engaged, living with someone or in a relationship of six months or more. Members of the wedding party should also be invited with a guest. If you happen to be living together then your betrothed’s name should have been written beneath yours on the envelope. If your spouse-to-be has their own place, your friend should have asked for their address and sent them an invitation. Perhaps she just assumes that you will both attend or inadvertently omitted your intended’s name on the envelope. Either way, it wouldn’t hurt to find out. Thank her for the invitation and ask if your partner is also invited: “I know the
A
invitation is addressed only to me, but I assume my partner is invited as well and just want to confirm this with you.” If she isn’t inviting your spouse-to-be, she’ll need to explain this etiquette “don’t,” but our guess is that your partner is definitely on the guest list.
TOAST TIPS
Q
My fiancé’s best man is a great guy, but a bit unpredictable. I’m a little worried about the type of toast he may give. Any advice? Be open and honest about your expectations right from the start. You and your fiancé should make time to get together with your best man to discuss his toast and your vision for the wedding. Make it clear that you’d like his words to highlight the positive qualities of your relationship and answer any questions he might have. Creating and writing a good toast takes effort, forethought and practice, so invite him to collect funny, sweet or meaningful stories about and your fiancé from your families and friends. That said, as long as his speech is heartfelt and includes a little humor and sentimentality, you needn’t worry.
A
BOTTLED UP
Q
My spouse-to-be and I are providing the alcohol for our wedding. For 75 guests, how many bottles of red and white wine and champagne should we purchase? Good question. Most couples don’t have any idea how many drinks per guest are needed. Here’s a guideline: One bottle of wine or champagne provides about five to six glasses and most guests will probably drink no more than two glasses per hour. So,
A
depending on the time of day (guests are apt to drink more at an evening wedding) and your crowd (are they party people or a more subdued bunch?), you can figure on about 25 bottles each of champagne, red wine and white wine for 75 guests. You’ll also want to have plenty of soft drinks and water on hand (a liter for every three or four guests) and lots of ice. And ask your reception site manager if there’s a corkage fee—some places charge as much as $10 per bottle just for opening and serving beverages that you provide. Finally, request that both opened and unopened bottles are returned to you after the wedding.
FOOD ALERT
Q
We plan on serving beer, wine, sandwiches, salads and wedding cake at our afternoon reception. How should we let our guests know not to expect a full sit-down meal? It’s considerate to inform your guests about the type of meal they’ll be served so they can plan accordingly. On your wedding invitation, below the reception location information, state “light refreshments will be served.” You and your spouse-to-be can also spread the word to family and friends beforehand.

ne of the topics our editors get asked on the reg is about styling the wedding look. Sure, some brides are laser-focused and know exactly what dress they want and how they’re going to wear it. But if you’re like us, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the choices. There are so many gorgeous wedding dresses out there, take a cheeky gander at this stunning Galia Lahav gown! Six times a year we shoot a cover and each time we’re faced with a choice of similar import. We admit not quite as consequential, mind you. Once we have our dress...

...and yes, tears might be involved, we too are faced with the exciting task of styling the look with jewelry, headgear (to veil or not to veil), and flowers. We can’t stress enough that every bride should look and feel like her best self on the wedding day so if a bouquet of black orchids suits, then go for it. A choice like that can be strikingly beautiful. A knockout headpiece like this handmade couture flower band from Monvieve makes a big fashion statement, but the natural makeup and easy, sexy (yet polished) hair feels more real than reality-show trying too hard. Styling is a nuanced balancing act. Proportion and personality are everything. How you wear your dress is all you, so don’t stress. It is meant to be joyful and fun!

THE WEDDING STACK
If you’re not sporting a multi-level wedding ring stack, are you really even married? We jest of course, but the wedding stack is well, stacking up to be a major trend among brides. Sure, it starts out with that dazzling engagement ring and then your wedding band on the big day, but then you hit an anniversary, a birthday, a personal milestone, the birth of a child, and before you know it, your wedding stack is not only epically beautiful, but it’s a part of your story marked in diamonds, gemstones, and precious metals. So, pile them on and stack them up, your ring finger awaits.

A Master Plan
L
Celebrations expert David Tutera takes on the to-do list.
et the wedding planning begin! This should be one of the most enjoyable and creative processes you will ever experience. But many brides and grooms tell me they get so overwhelmed they feel as if they’ve taken on a second job they’ve had no training for. As for me, I started at 14, learning the craft of floral design while working at my grandfather’s flower shop. That’s where my journey began. I truly believe I was born to create parties. Here, some of the planning aspects I love most—and least. Get the more difficult wedding elements under control and the rest should fall into place.
THE PROS (what I ❤)
• SETTING THE VISION Getting a chance to dive in and under-
• FLOWERS AND DECOR I love meeting with vendors in all areas
from invitations to flowers, colors and lighting. Whether discussing invitations, color palettes or venues with my brides and grooms, I always envision the overall celebration. Flowers are forever key: A bride without a bouquet or a table without a centerpiece isn’t, to me, a wedding. Soft colors, bold colors or combinations thereof create an overall style or even evoke a period in time. These visual components can be the most pleasurable parts of planning.
• FOOD AND DRINK It’s great to use food to tell the story of your
culture and background—this is something I always explore with my couples. Do take care, however, not to get on the full-on foodie bandwagon when planning your wedding, incorporating too many exotic ingredients that may make your guests uncomfortable. When it comes to beverages, specialty drinks have been a major trend but I am now loving specialty bars, such as whiskey, champagne and/or wine bars. Any of these options can make your wedding more unique.
• THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE I love the chance to make
special moments happen: perhaps a dance that no one knew about or changing up the timeline in a new way. I always say that something different should happen every 30 minutes. This allows guests to become interactive participants vs. inactive participants following the same old routine (ceremony to cocktails to dinner) and results in something special. This is what I will always love about doing weddings.
16 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Nov/Dec 2024
THE CONS (what I don’t ❤)
• WHO’S INVITED? Determining the guest list can
be a tough task, as can deciding on seating arrangements: who should sit next to whom. Once this gets set, the sailing becomes much smoother, I promise!
• DETAILS, DETAILS Picking the perfect songs
for your processional, recessional, first dance and all of your important formalities (e.g. toasts) can be challenging, since these elements require a final, set-in-stone decision—you need to make sure everything is exactly as you want it. These all-important nitty-gritty details can be a chore, but they are essential to get right.
• TOO MANY COOKS You do not want a committee of opinions. Pick a few supportive friends and family members (three at the most) and trust in them to guide you and support you. The key word is support.
• TRAVEL LOGISTICS Coordinating travel details
for all your wedding guests can be mind-numbing, not to mention time-consuming. Instead of being the point person for travel questions, I suggest finding a good travel agent ahead of time (especially if you’re having a destination wedding!) who can handle these issues. It will be worth it if it means having time you would otherwise lose to focus on the other important details of your day.
• OVERSHARING (especially on social media) One of my ground rules: Don’t forget that some parts of your wedding should be a surprise for your guests, so don’t spill too many details ahead of time!
PHOTOGRAPHY: MIKI & SONJA PHOTOGRAPHY
stand what a couple is all about is the important first step to a beautiful event. My television work has always made it seem as if a super-specific wedding theme is mandatory, but please trust me when I say it is not. However, I do love when a couple knows the types of looks, colors, feelings and moods they want for their wedding. Ask: What are your favorite colors, historic eras, flowers, seasons? The answers will help you better envision the overall look of your wedding.

NO What’s wrong with this picture? It’s totally natural to for many of us to pull our heads back when we laugh or smile—especially when nerves are part of the equation, Jean-Pierre says. This compresses skin into a double chin. Here, our bride has great posture, but at the last minute pulled her head backward when she smiled, just as the shutter clicked.
The easy fix Rather than pull back, push your head forward for front-facing photos. “Push more than you normally would,” says Jean-Pierre. “It will still look natural in a 2-D photo.” Practice in front of a mirror to see how you can create a sharper jawline using this move. Full-figured brides should also drop their chins ever so slightly.

one foot forward so that one knee is in front of the other to create an hourglass shape. Keep your weight on the back foot and turn hips slightly to the side. Also, keep space between one or both arms and your waist. Not only will your waist look narrower, your arms will appear slimmer and your shoulders shapelier. Keep your head forward, as explained above right.

SHAHEEN AND ADAM PLEDGED THEIR LOVE BENEATH A TUMBLE OF WHITE BLOSSOMS IN BUFFALO, NEW YORK. PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLIN GORDON PHOTOGRAPHY

Adam and Shaheen met during their first year of dental school, quickly becoming friends, then romantic partners, and moving from city to city as dental residents before settling in Buffalo, NY. Ten years in, Adam proposed, and the event-planning wheels were set in motion. Their sophisticated chiarascuro wedding palette was offset with a living wall of lush greenery, fronted by a matching arch bedecked with white blossoms, the flowers echoed in Adam's boutonniere and a swag of blooms that adorned Shaheen’s lapel.

During cocktail hour, guests could amble up to a custom-built living champagne wall, ring a bell and be served a glass of bubbly by a disembodied white-gloved hand reaching through the greenery. Another wall installation—black and white panels set with bud vases, tea lights and topped with the couple's custom monogram—was positioned at the sweetheart table. Following the ceremony, guests moved to the ballroom for dinner, and from there to a tented outdoor courtyard for the reception. By this time, the couple had traded in their black jackets for white tux jackets with black lapels. Custom black and white fans bearing the couple’s initials ensured guests’ comfort as they danced the night away.

T
he Mayor of Portland! That’s how one elated bride, who turned to Portland, ME-based Pinch Me Planning to plan her wedding, described owner and designer Christina Padavano in a glowing review. “Knowing she recognized my passion for Maine and its people made me happy,” says Christina, who marvels at her company’s origins. “I launched Pinch Me Planning in 2016. At the time, I was living my career dream as a buyer and product developer for L.L. Bean Home.” That dream began to shift when Christina’s creative gifts and organizational savvy inspired her friends to enlist her help in planning and designing their weddings. Comparing her role at L.L. Bean with that of a wedding planner, Christina remarks, “I realized the striking similarities between the two roles. Both required an eye for detail, amplified the voice and talents of vendors, predicted trends, and prioritized building relationships.”

CREATIVITY TO THE RESCUE!
• “Whenever we work at a private residence, our creativity shines. We have to understand the flow of guests throughout the property, and need to create a plan that amplifies the beauty of the setting. We must analyze the parking, the restrooms, the power options and a weather plan. I love planning these events as I have to remain innovative with every new property we work at.” • “Rather than a surface-level ‘best day of your life,’ we work to ensure each couple’s event is a highly personal Bespoke blossoms. and meaningful celebration of all that’s to come.” • “It’s all in our name—we want to invoke ‘pinch me’ moments. We want to create surprise and delight for guests— A moment that stops you in your tracks.”
MY GREATEST STRENGTH
• “Collaborating with both couples and vendors. The strongest vendor teams understand the couple’s personalities and priorities, so I try to facilitate interaction when appropriate. That way, the vendors 22 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Nov/Dec 2024

MORE CONSIDERED CELEBRATIONS
• “With the increasing prices of many things post-pandemic, our couples are becoming more thoughtful about their guest lists. I rarely used to see a 100-person wedding, but now it seems like a more intimate crowd is the preference.” • “We also see people being more diligent about spending their money. They want to understand the ‘why’ behind the cost.”
MY FAVORITE WEDDING TRADITION
Dinner is served.
“Wedding house parties! Our couples forgo large wedding parties but still invite their friends to join them in the morning festivities. That way, they don’t have to get ready alone, and don’t put the financial burden or wedding party ‘duties’ on anyone.”
WHERE TO WED
• “80% of our weddings are destination weddings. We primarily work in Southern Maine, but we also love traveling to the Bar Harbor/Acadia region.” • “Sometimes, our couples don’t even have a connection to Maine; they just want to find a neutral territory for both families. With its excellent food and beverage scene, Portland has grown in popularity in the last few years, so that’s always on people’s radar.”
WHY I LOVE WEDDINGS

Planner & Designer, Penzi Weddings, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
C
ouples dreaming of a magical wedding in “The Land of the Sun” are often drawn to the beguiling charm and vibrance of historic San Miguel de Allende. The allure is everywhere, starting with the stunning architecture, from the Baroque to the neo-Gothic. Timeworn cobblestone streets and sparkling fountains. Strolling mariachi bands and an exciting arts scene. Small wonder that Guadalupe Alvarez chose what she calls “Mexico’s prettiest town” as the location for the bespoke wedding planning company she launched in 2004, Penzi Weddings.
WHAT KEEPS ME INSPIRED
• “First the couple—their story; their relationship; what they want in life; what they like. And of course, my incredible city of San Miguel de Allende.”
WHY I LOVE WEDDINGS
• “So many reasons! A wedding is the start of a lifelong partnership. It’s the moment when two individuals commit to each other for life—the moment when the couples show the world their love and commitment.” •“The smiles, the love, all the guests who have traveled long distances to show the couple their love and share their happiness.”
First dance.
So happy together.
SECRETS TO SUCCESS
• “I think there are many secrets, especially my dedication to the couples. I am creative, but I’m also a business person, so I can manage budgets. I am very intense, and this intensity makes things happen.”
MY FAVORITE PART OF WEDDING PLANNING
• “Getting to know the couple; making sure we understand what they want; and of course, the day of the wedding, when we see all the months of planning come alive. The moments I especially love are when the bride walks down the aisle, when the guests enter the reception area, and the first dances.” 24 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Nov/Dec 2024

ATTENTION TO DETAIL
• “We are known for paying attention to what our clients want; for our organization; for having a large and incredible inventory of decor and tabletop for weddings. And for making sure your wedding has your personal touch.”
In full bloom.
An artful arrangement.
Taking a moment.
TO MY COUPLES
• “Wedding planning has stages; some months are very intense, and there are some when there is not much to do. But as planners we are working on your wedding all the time, making sure it will be just as you want it. Know that we have your back!”
FRESH FLORAL STYLE
• “We started using succulents 15 years ago when most people did not even know what they were. We also did floating arrangements early on. We did an incredible wedding with hundreds of floating sunflowers.” Step by step.
MY FAVORITE WEDDING TRADITION
• “I like the lazo [a lasso placed around the couple’s shoulders after the recitation of vows, joining them together]. The lazo is a Mexican tradition that symbolizes the fusion of the two souls of the couple. I love that.”
THE PERFECT WEDDING WEEKEND
Be seated.
Teamwork.
• “In a perfect world, I would love: a welcome cocktail on Thursday; a Friday rehearsal dinner with all the guests; a spiritual wedding ceremony at the same venue; and a fun reception with a live band.” • “But the most important thing is that I love to see happy couples, because their happiness is infectious, and then everybody is happy.”
LESSONS LEARNED
• “What we know is that when looking for a wedding planner, most couples will read reviews, check your reputation, and will want to work with planners with experience and good reviews.”
NEW HORIZONS
• “I am excited to start speaking at wedding conferences. I did one in Barcelona early this year, will do two in Peru and will also be one of 10 designers from around the world at the Table Design Exhibition in Istanbul in December 2024.” • “Beyond wedding planning, I love to travel, and I do have some exciting trips in mind.”¢ 25
YOU’RE ENGAGED NOW WHAT? OUR ULTIMATE PLANNING GUIDE LAYS OUT EVERY STEP, FROM SPREADING THE WORD TO TAMING THE GUEST LIST.
FIRST THINGS FIRST
GET ORGANIZED Set up a spreadsheet or notebook with sections for each budget category. This way you can input the amount you want to spend on each item and then note your expenditures. As you near your limits, you can start to figure out ways to cut costs.
26 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Nov/Dec 2024
SET YOUR SITES CEREMONY SPECIFICS. Finding an officiant and a ceremony site can be simple—if, say, you wish to marry in your hometown house of worship. Even if you’re no longer living in the area, you may have family who still are and can help out. Sometimes, for the sake of convenience, couples choose a place that’s in between their homes and their parents’. And then there’s the destination wedding: Just make sure that everyone you really want to join you and your groom can afford to travel and is able to make it.
THE RECEPTION VENUE. Think again about those wedding dreams, and see how they mesh with reality. Perhaps you envision a lush outdoor garden abloom with pink and white flowers. Fine, but what if you can’t find just the right place or the weather is an issue? Maybe there’s a quaint hotel with a pretty courtyard that would suit. Some couples find historic homes in their area to rent. Use local resources to narrow down options: a wedding planner or a recently married friend. Check wedding websites and bridal magazines. Then start scheduling visits.

• MAKE THE ANNOUNCEMENT. Some couples just don’t feel right if anyone knows their big news before their parents and other close family members do. If possible, tell both sets of folks in person. If your parents don’t live nearby, put in a special phone call or FaceTime. • DELVE INTO DREAMS. Sit down with your fiancé and talk ideas. Think about the style you envision, whether it’s a beach bash, a sit-down dinner in a ballroom or a ceremony on a mountaintop. No talk of money. Yet. • ROUGH OUT THE TIMING. While you don’t have to set a firm date now, it’s smart to have an idea of what month or season you want to marry in. Then you’ll know how long you have to get things organized. Because your wedding’s size determines where you’ll hold the party, how much it will cost (prices usually rise per guest) and whether travel will be involved, creating a guest list is one of the most important things to do. So make your list; your fiancé and both families should do the same. You can, and likely will, cut later, but this first number will be your base. • NOW TALK MONEY. It’s rare these days that the bride’s parents pick up the whole bill, so decide on your bottom line. Find out from both sets of parents if or how much they can contribute.
KNOW YOUR PROS Here’s how to hire the best.
PHOTOGRAPHY: (WEDDING PARTY) LAUREN FAIR PHOTOGRAPHY; (TABLE) PHOTOGRAPHY: CORINNE GRAVES PHOTOGRAPHY
• PHOTOGRAPHER AND VIDEOGRAPHER. The best ones usually book weddings many months in advance, so get on this one early. Gather recommendations from friends, then research what kinds of shots you’d like to see—formal portraits and dancing shots or a candid, journalistic format? Always ask to see other wedding albums the pro has done. • MUSICIANS. Arrange to hear musicians perform before you sign them on. Make sure they agree to stick to the playlist you give them, including any “do not play” tunes. Find out how they will dress and how many breaks they will take. Hiring a DJ is usually less expensive than a live band, but not always. • FLOWERS AND DECOR. Once you have your QUICK TIP reception site booked, you can decide on table Not sure what kind of album arrangements and other decorations. A hotel you want? Look for photograballroom might be a relatively blank slate, phers with a looser style and whereas a museum may need little more than many package choices on simple centerpieces. If you can buy fresh stems offer. You don’t have to make at a local farm, ask a talented friend to help up your mind right away. After put together bouquets and centerpieces. Or ask the wedding, you may even your florist to incorporate tons of greenery to want to get creative and make your own album. make fewer flowers look like a lot more. • CATERER. You want to know how dishes will taste and look and how flexible the caterer is with menus and prices. Don’t be afraid to bargain; you can cut costs by limiting the number and kinds of hors d’oeuvres served at cocktail hour.
MAIDEN VOYAGE When choosing your attendants, follow these tips:
• Explain to prospective bridesmaids what the role requires, like planning the shower and paying for their attire.
• Tell each ’maid that she’ll need to commit to a certain amount of
time and energy—and if she can’t, it’s fine for her to decline. • Choose as many or as few bridesmaids as you want. • Give your closest friend or relative the maid of honor position. • Include a female relative of your groom in your bevy of bridesmaids; it’s a diplomatic move that can only strengthen family relations.
ATTIRE ADVICE It’s not strictly necessary to know wedding place and time details before you shop. Whereas fashion guidelines were more rigid in the past (not wearing a glittery sheath for a daytime wedding, for example), the rules are looser now. But check with your house of worship; some require covered shoulders or heads. Start shopping whenever you feel pumped—and don’t forget to have your guy rent formalwear for himself and his groomsmen. ➺

ON THE MONEY Wedding budgets have a way of expanding like a balloon. Keep yours from popping (and give yourself some wiggle room for those unexpected expenses or must-haves) by reining in spending. Here, six smart saving tips: ➊ BORROW. Did you totally love the tiara your sister wore? Borrow it for your ensemble! You can borrow jewelry (just like the stars do at Oscar time) and other accessories, honeymoon luggage (no reason to splurge on new suitcases if your parents have good stuff), vases for centerpieces (if you’re doing these yourself) and so on. ➋ USE PEOPLE’S DIY SKILLS. If your aunt is a sewing whiz, she can create a veil or even do alterations on your dress. A skilled artist can create personalized invitations. A crafty pal can come up with a fun favor. An avid scrapbooker can put together an album for you. Just let them know this will be their wedding gift to you. ➌ CREATE A SIGNATURE DRINK. If you’re tempted to save by having a cash bar, stop! Instead, cut down on liquor costs
by offering one signature drink (like a gourmet martini) along with beer, soda and juices. Another idea: Buy cases of a favorite local wine and serve just that. ➍ LIMIT THE LIMOS. It’s nice to pull up to the ceremony location in a sleek, shiny limo or classic car, but consider skipping the rides elsewhere to save money. Instead have your brother or a cousin chauffeur you and your new hubby to the reception. ➎ DON’T GO FLOWER MAD. There are plenty of ways to keep your bill from blooming: Buy flowers wholesale and give them to a florist to work with or create centerpieces that use candles and just a few beautiful blooms. A profusion of petals looks lush and lovely, but keep in mind you can get the same effect with fewer flowers than you think. ➏ AVOID IMPULSE BUYING. Got everything on your list? Then stop shopping. If you’ve already bought your bridesmaids lovely shawls, and you see pretty handbags that would match…and sparkly earrings…put them down.
DRESS SHOPPING • ERASE THE EMOTION. If you were the girl who pinned towels in her hair to play bride, you may need extra help with this step. Pulling the emotion out of the event and remaining level-headed as you shop for your dress will help you stay within the bounds of both budget and practicality. If it helps, bring your mom and a down-to-earth pal along with you. • KNOW WHAT KIND OF SHOPPER YOU ARE. Some brides relish the hunt for the ideal dress, and happily book a number of appointments at bridal salons. They like having a salesperson who offers ideas and selects gown styles for them. Others would really love to just slip into a store (a department store, a specialty boutique, a secondhand shop) and find their dress hanging there on the rack. Both ways are possible. Decide which kind of shopper you are, and work accordingly.
QUICK TIP It’s likely everyone will be going snap-happy with their phones. To avoid ending up with 300 nearly identical shots, give guests a few ideas (print up a card to place on each table). Suggest one photo of each couple at the table, some goofy dance pics and a surprise shot of their choice—all to be shared later.

• DON’T SECOND-GUESS YOURSELF. Think you’ve found The One? Then you probably have. Look no further—and relax.
TAME THAT GUEST LIST When you pay a caterer by the head, every guest is a ka-ching on the total bill—not just for the food and drink, but also for tips and taxes, which rise accordingly. Here are some ways to keep the list under control:
• DON’T INVITE THE WHOLE OFFICE—either just ask your boss and your closest friends at work or no one at all.
• DON’T DIG INTO YOUR OLD ADDRESS BOOK
for blasts from the past; stick to those people you see regularly. • REIN IN PARENTS. They can invite their friends, but they don’t have to ask the garden club and the tennis buddies and the former neighbors.
HOW INVITING Your invitations should be sent out six to eight weeks before the big day, so work backward from there to be sure you order in time. The basic invite announces the hosts of the wedding (whether that’s the two of you, your parents or a combination) and the place and time of the ceremony. It may include a card that gives the reception details, a reply card and envelope. Have a sample of the invite in hand before deciding to use it— and proofread! Never include registry information with your invitation.
PHOTOGRAPHY: (INVITATIONS) CORINNE GRAVES PHOTOGRAPHY; (CAKE) DANIELLE COONS PHOTOGRAPHY
PIECES OF THE PIE No matter what your wedding budget may be, here’s a rough idea of how much is typically spent in each category. Keep in mind that the numbers are not hard and fast. Some couples may, for example, choose to spend more on photography and less on flowers. It’s completely up to you!
• Reception: 40% • Engagement rings & wedding bands: 6% • Photography & videography: 10.5% • Invitations: 2%
• Wedding attire: 7% • Flowers: 5% • Music: 5% • Miscellaneous: 10% • Honeymoon: 14.5%
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SAMPLE OF YOUR INVITE IN HAND BEFORE DECIDING WHETHER OR NOT TO USE IT— AND REMEMBER TO PROOFREAD, PROOFREAD, PROOFREAD!
ALL ABOUT YOU It’s easy to become so caught up in the planning that you forget one simple thing: you! So start now to create and stick to a self-care plan. EXERCISE REGULARLY AND KEEP TO A HEALTHY DIET. Even a 30-minute walk several times a week can be enough to keep you feeling energetic. To prevent fatigue, take a mul-
tivitamin everyday, especially if you’re skipping meals. Bring healthy snacks—almonds, a banana—along with you when you go shopping or to work. GET PLENTY OF SLEEP. Most brides-to-be find themselves having some late nights, but try your best not to skimp on sleep; not getting enough contributes to lowered immunity,
and you don’t want to get sick now. Plus, well-rested folks always look their best. MEET WITH A HAIRSTYLIST. If you want to maintain your current cut and/or color, tell your regular hairstylist, and be sure you’re not due for an appointment the week before your big day (you should ideally have your hair cut and colored
a couple of weeks prior). If this stylist will do your hair for the wedding, see her for a practice session or two to try a couple of hairdos. (If you’re wearing a headpiece or tiara, bring it along.) PRACTICE MAKEUP. Most stores will give you free makeovers; tell them you’re getting married and they’ll go all out. 29

VENUES & CONTRACTS
“You must be aware of the financial pros and cons of each venue if you don’t want to be hit with unexpected expenses,” says Cheryl Beitler, who heads up The Zanadu Group, event planners in Hollywood, FL. “If you want a wedding outdoors, for example, you’ll need to obtain a number of pricey permits for your open-air event, and you’ll have to make sure that everything from city regulations to fire regulations are strictly adhered to. You’ll also have to rent tents in case of rain or inclement weather.” Beitler adds that every rental item placed in the tent is also your responsibility, including electricity generators, air conditioning or heating, the sound system and tableware. As for indoor venues, JoAnn Gregoli, the owner of Elegant Occasions event planning in New York City, says, “Ask the vendor for the price per person, all inclusive, so that you know the fee for food and beverages, plus tax and service charges. When reviewing the contract, look out for the words ‘additional costs may be incurred’ and ‘plus the cost of setup and delivery.’ ” Ask what these costs are: They can increase the price per person by 30 percent, adds Beitler, de-
pending on your state’s sales tax. Certain venue prices depend heavily on what time of year and where in the country you decide to get married. “If a majority of weddings take place between May and December where you live, you could save money across the board by getting married in a quieter month,” says Beitler. “The same applies to the day of the week or the time of day you choose. Reception halls charge the highest fees for Saturday night weddings. You might want to consider a Sunday brunch or luncheon instead, or consider a Friday night celebration.”
DECOR & FLOWERS “Selecting out-of-season flowers (such as peonies in October) will increase the budget considerably, as the flowers will need to be imported,” says Lisa Gorjestani, founder of Details Event Planning in Los Angeles. “Choosing flowers that are in season, abundant and have popular colors plays a big role in minimizing cost.” Gorjestani recommends hydrangeas for spring because they are large, luxurious and full—and they fill up space more easily and cheaply than, say, tulips. “If you want the feeling of lush blooms, but your budget doesn’t provide ➺

ENTERTAINMENT
“There are slower seasons and slower days that will give the bride and groom more negotiating leverage,” says Deanna Jones of the Deanna Jones Orchestra. “In general, Saturdays in the fall and spring are peak price. Summer is moderately busy, depending on the city and part of the country.” Consider slower (and thus less expensive) days like the Saturday of Memorial Day or Labor Day weekends, or choose an offValentine’s Day may season month like January or March. sound like a romantic bands and DJs usually bring their time to marry, but flowers ownBoth audio equipment, but according to Jones, are triple the price at CATERING a venue could insist that your entertainment that time of year. vendor use the in-house audio system instead, Think you’ve heard the end of food-rehiding another fee that could add up to $4,000 lated expenses when your venue tells you how much each guest’s plate will cost you? for it, choose one type of flower and use a mass quantity of it. This will create a greater visual impact,” says Gorjestani. Gorjestani suggests adding costeffective votives and candles to your centerpiece. However, most event spaces require fire permits and have restrictions on candles. She notes that a good florist will take care of the permit and the fee. You can create depth on the tables and conjure up a romantic mood—without digging too deeply into your pockets—by adding light-reflecting mirrors. “The one item that is often overlooked that I feel plays an absolute integral part is lighting. It is a key element in the overall look of your wedding,” says Gorjestani.
Although many venues offer wedding packages that include the price of the cake, Beitler warns that they tend to charge an extra cake-cutting fee if you bring in a cake from an outside bakery, so ask exactly how much this fee will add to your bill. If you do bring in an outside cake, be aware that “the price is based on decoration,” says Lauri Ditunno, a cake designer based in New York City. “The more labor-intensive the design is, the higher the price.”

Sam Ofman DOESN’T love wedding planning Still, along with millions of like-minded couples, he had to plan a wedding anyway. In his book, A Groom with a View: What I Learned Helping My Wife Plan Our Wedding, he proves that experts aren’t the only ones with worthwhile advice. Here, some insights. by Sam Ofman Sam and Alex and the ’49 Plymouth. Sam at work in the rental showroom.
• Relax. You don’t need a wedding survival guide. It’s a big party you throw for yourself. I promise, you’ll survive. disillusionment. Don’t let it get to you. Your wedding may not be special to your caterer or day-of planner, but it’s still special to you.

• Your fiancée may ask you to be more
decisive. Don’t fall for it. Never do anything without her approval.
• Hiring a costumed-chauffeur to drive you
home from the reception in a ’49 Plymouth is a cute idea, but at $33 per minute, it becomes an expensive photo op.
• The catering tasting is fantastic, but not for the reason you’d think. It represents the first return on your investment, when the decisions, money, emails, and aggravation culminate in something concrete. You don’t just taste the hors d’oeuvres, you taste the fruits of your labor.
• Read the fine print. Don’t let a $500 confetti fee catch you by surprise.
• Tell your mom in advance that she can’t invite Nancy. Nancy is your mom’s friend

Gabby and Nic Graner kicked off married life with a rollicking celebration held at Austin’s Q2 Stadium. PHOTOGRAPHS BY CAROLINE’S COLLECTIVE
IT WAS “SUPER CHILLY” THE DAY NIC PROPOSED, GABBY RECALLS. His plan was to photograph the two of them for a New Home/New Year announcement card, and capture the proposal on film at the same time. But Gabby was having none of it. “I just didn’t feel like dressing up,” she says. Nic put the camera aside. “He avoided me all day,” Gabby continues—until later that evening as the couple sat together by the fireplace, when Nic pulled a ring out of his Carharrt jacket and asked Gabby to marry him. Gabby said yes, and then “We proceeded to FaceTime everyone we knew!”

The venue: The Q2 Stadium holds a special place in Gabby’s heart. “My dad and I share a big love of soccer, and we attend almost every Austin FC game,” Gabby explains. And with a 20,000-plus capacity, there was more—way more—than enough space to accommodate the couple’s 280 wedding guests.
The ceremony: The Q2 Stadium field served as the ceremony setting. Granger Smith—one of the couple’s favorite country artists “and a fellow Texas A&M Aggie”— was the officiant. “We wanted the ceremony to be short and sweet,” Gabby tells Bridal Guide. “We aren’t mushygushy vows kind of people.”

“I wanted our wedding to be an experience unlike most of the weddings we have been to,” Gabby says. nce the thriving home to North America’s most prolific economy—whaling—this island 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts is as historically adorable as advertised. Here on cobblestoned streets, ancient (but charming!) clapboard homes are fronted by masses of climbing rambler roses and bountiful hydrangea bushes, while the golden beaches are guarded by historic lighthouses. The island’s interior is a bucolic expanse crisscrossed with meandering bike paths—cycling being the easiest and most popular transport. Book into the newly revamped The Cottages at the Boat Basin and you’ll experience the best of Nantucket—including your own bike to explore it all. The basin itself is a warren of wharves dating back to the late 1770s. Today, the port area welcomes local ferries, neighbors and their boats, a world-famous regatta and visiting yachts, with the Cottages, as they are colloquially known, perched on the piers overlooking them all. Ranging from studios to three-bedroom duplexes, all feature nautical decor touches that harken to whaling history while showcasing luxury modern amenities (room rates start at $370 a night; thecottagesnantucket.com). — Jenna Mahoney
