&
Straight talk, smart solutions by Mary Clarke, Editor in Chief
A CHILD’S PLACE
Q A
Should my five-year-old flower girl sit at the head table with the rest of the wedding party? Considering how young most flower girls and ring bearers are (usually ages four through eight), we’d recommend seating them with their parents. The little ones will be more comfortable with this arrangement and you won’t have to worry about a bored or fussy child at your table. If you’re planning to invite a lot of children to the wedding, you might want to have a kids’ table strategically placed near their parents, and your flower girl can sit there. Consider a special children’s menu of treats like burgers and fries, mac ‘n’ cheese and cupcakes and ice cream. Provide crayons and coloring books or other games and toys to keep them happy and busy throughout dinner. More than likely, though, they’ll be out on the dance floor with everyone else dancing the night away!

Q
My parents are divorced and I don’t have a good relationship with my stepmother. Am I obligated to have her in my wedding photos? It’s not necessary to round everyone up for the “one big happy family” shot, but you do need to include your stepmother in some of the wedding photos. Leaving her out will hurt her and your dad’s feelings and further affect your relationship with them for the worse. Meet with your photographer ahead of time to discuss the types of photos you want and which members of your family are to be included. An experienced photographer is sure to have dealt with divorced-family situations and can offer
A
expert advice on how to handle potential problems. For example, have pictures taken of you and your new husband with your mom and dad, and then have additional shots taken of the two of you with your father and stepmother. Your dad will have a keepsake and he and his wife will appreciate your efforts to make her feel a part of the wedding.
MISSED MOMENTS
Q
A friend’s mom missed her son’s first dance and the cake cutting and is heartbroken. She was out on a terrace with other guests and was never notified. There was no DJ or MC, but the couple did have a wedding coordinator. Thoughts? So sorry to hear this! We can’t stress enough how important it is for couples to think through the details of their day. Even if they plan on having a small, casual celebration it’s important that family members—especially parents—share in special moments such as first dance, toast and cake cutting. In this case, the couple should have communicated clear instructions to their coordinator, but as a professional planner, she should have known to make an announcement that the first dance and cake cutting were about to begin.
A
CONTRACT CLUES
Q
A recently married friend is super upset with some of her vendors: Her florist didn’t make enough boutonnieres and the band took too many breaks. How do I make sure this doesn’t happen to me? The best way to avoid such mishaps is to always (always!) check references and
A
make sure you have detailed contracts. Before you sign on the dotted line, do some research to see if a company/vendor has a history of consumer complaints or negative online comments. As for the contract, insist that everything you discuss with the vendor is put in writing to safeguard against empty promises and hidden fees. You’ll want to spell out the specifics, such as the number of floral arrangements, bouquets and boutonnieres needed and how many breaks a band takes along with the length of time. Never pay anything—not even a small deposit—without first signing a contract that includes all parts of the agreement including the services that will be provided, the dates of service, the method of payment and the cancellation and refund policies. Make sure the locations and delivery schedules are noted and that all taxes, gratuities and overtime fees are listed. If you’re not 100 percent comfortable with the contract, don’t sign on the spot. A reputable pro won’t pressure you, and if someone does, stay far, far away from that vendor!

ask david Q & A
DEAR DAVID You asked, he answered! Celebrations expert David Tutera shares his wedding wisdom.
Q
We’re planning an outdoor reception but also want to take advantage of the gorgeous sky view our venue provides from the inside looking out. What would you suggest we do?
A
If you’re having an outdoor reception, but want to still utilize the inside of your venue, try kicking the evening off indoors for cocktail hour and then bring the party outside for the reception and a night of dancing under the stars. For outdoor events, always have a rain plan. Discuss your options with your venue or have a tent rental on hold just in case.
What is the number-one thing to splurge on for the wedding reception?
Entertainment would have to be the number-one splurge in my book. I always say that music is the heartbeat to any celebration or event and really sets the tone from beginning to end.
Q A
What color wedding dress should I wear for my second marriage?
You may wear any color your heart desires, whether it is your first, second or third marriage! There is no rule stating that a bride getting married a second time around can’t wear white, just like a bride getting married for the first time can wear a blush gown. Wedding fashion has become so trend-forward and out-of-the-box in recent years, breaking free of old-fashioned myths and traditions. My advice? Wear whatever color brings out your personality and makes you feel beautiful.
Q
I’m getting married this fall, but am not a big fan of traditional autumn colors. I love bright, summery hues and pastels and had always envisioned this scheme for my wedding. What are your thoughts?
A
You absolutely do not have to align your wedding colors with the season. Pastel color schemes in particular have become popular all year-round and would beautifully complement a fall wedding. Do however, take note of which flowers are in season and go from there to help save on costs, as blooms that are not in season may be more expensive. When it comes to your bridesmaid gowns, brights or pastels are fine, but do opt for a seasonally appropriate style in a heavier fabric like silk or taffeta as opposed to chiffon or organza.
Q A
I know you like mixing tall and low centerpieces. How many variations should you have?
Mixing high and low centerpieces brings extra dimension and visual appeal to the event space. I typically stick with two to three designs. If you do a third, consider a centerpiece that blends aspects of the other two designs. You can take the same

Q A
approach with candles, using varying sizes to create a more intimate design. If you’re mixing round and long tables, opt for highs and lows on the rounds and a lush runner of florals or votive candles on the longs.
What are your thoughts on whether the couple should be present during cocktail hour vs. remain behind the scenes in their wedding suite?
There is no right or wrong here, it’s a matter of preference. When choosing what is best for you and your beloved, consider how each situation unfolds. If you prefer to be in the action and like the idea of mingling with your guests during the cocktail hour, keep in mind you may not be able to partake in much food or drink, as you will be kept busy greeting guests and constantly on the move. Taking some quiet time to yourselves in the wedding suite can be a nice way to take a breather, rest your feet and eat something after the first half of the long day. Consider it like a “half-time” before going back out to celebrate and dance the night away with your guests!
Q A
Can you recommend some unique thank-you gift ideas for bridesmaids and groomsmen?
Try gifting your maids with an experience, like a mani and mimosas get-together. You can present it to them with a fun nail polish (like Essie’s “Bachelorette Bash” or “Meet Cute Moment”) attached to a little thank-you note stating that you’ll be treating them to a fabulous manicure before the big day (don’t forget the champagne!) Consider big-day accessories for your groomsmen—dress socks, pocket squares, cufflinks—stylish items they can use for future festivities. Take it a step further and customize with monograms or meaningful logos. Your friends will appreciate the thought you put into these creative gift ideas.

Why hold just one ceremony when you can hold two? That was the thinking behind this Los Cabos wedding weekend encompassing both Hindu and Western celebrations. To set their ambitious plan to life, Ida Seira and Neil Mehta (together since high school!) called on Stacy Wichelhaus of Lorelle Events. Here, some highlights. 1, 2 The Hindu ceremony took place on the beach at venue One&Only Palmilla with the Sea of Cortez as the backdrop. 3, 4 A traditional Thali lunch created by Chef Gaurav Anand of CGA Catering followed the ceremony.

The wedding cake was set in a floral “meadow” against a custom LED backdrop. 3 Menu highlights included Palak Patta Chaat, Butter Chicken, Butternut Squash Kofta, New Zealand Baby Lamb Chops and Vegetable Chop. 4 Centerpieces were a mix of high and low. 4

OUR SIGNATURE STYLE
• “We particularly love a tented affair with a mountain view. Most of our weddings are black tie, and we love the juxtaposition of a chic, formal dress code with the rustic natural elements of a mountain meadow, or Aspen forest surroundings.”

DESIGN DETAILS
• “We love infusing our events with lush florals, highimpact ceiling installations, bespoke place settings, and memorable food and beverage. We’re also known for throwing epic parties, and FUN celebrations. We are often told, ‘this was the most fun wedding I’ve ever been to!’ ”
Pure joy!
WHERE I FIND INSPIRATION
• “We are so lucky to live in the Rocky Mountains where breathtaking views and scenery abound, and we love to embrace that for our destination celebrations here.” High glamour.
WHY I LOVE WEDDINGS
• “After I married the love of my life in 2019, weddings took on a whole new meaning for me.”
SECRETS TO SUCCESS
• “I studied Communications and Fine Art in college at CU Boulder, and I find I use those skills daily through artistic expression in event applications, and communication with couples, vendors, and our social media community.”
MY FAVORITE PART OF WEDDING PLANNING
Cheers!
• “Design—creating the personality of the event to reflect our clients through florals, stationery, linens, lighting, menu, interactive experiences, etc. And then finally revealing the space to our clients on the day. That moment is always the best.” 28 BRIDALGUIDE.COM July/Aug 2024

MEMORABLE MOMENTS
• “For my own wedding we hand-wrote thank-you/love notes to every one of our guests. The calligraphed envelopes were positioned between the plates, so as the amuse-bouche was cleared, there was an audible gasp in the room as everyone was surprised and delighted by our words.”
SURPRISE, SURPRISE!
• “We always love grand gestures and surprises. At one wedding reception the best man and groomsmen surprised everyone with a choreographed dance and customized song for the bride, performed by the groomsmen. It was such a sweet and fun moment.”
LET’S GET THIS PARTY STARTED!
• “In my mind, the perfect wedding weekend would kick off with A crystalline tablescape. a Western Welcome Party. Everyone would wear boots and hats, and enjoy casual fare, line dancing, and a bluegrass/country band.” • “Friday evening would be a more formal rehearsal dinner in a beautiful location with Best friends forever. a stunning tablescape, with toasts given by loved ones over candlelight to end the evening.”
MY FAVORITE WEDDING TRADITION
• “The cake cutting. I have photos of my grandparents and parents cutting the cake at their weddings. There’s something about that act that’s so timeless and significant. And I love the classic photos that come from it!”
EXCITEMENT AHEAD
• “We just rebranded after our 10-year anniversary, and it feels so good to have a new fresh face to carry us into the next decade. We also just launched a sister company, Bespoke byBello, which offers luxury tabletop rentals. BALANCING ACT
Say “I do.”
• “For the perfect wedding weekend, it’s essential to prioritize balance and relaxation for both the couple and their guests. While pre- and post-wedding events can be enjoyable, giving everyone some free time to unwind and explore at their own pace is essential.” • “As the stars of the weekend, the couple shouldn’t feel obligated to be the first to arrive or the last to leave every event. Instead, they can prioritize their well-being by showing up fashionably late and departing early, allowing them to fully savor each moment of their special weekend while creating lasting memories with their loved ones.”

MONEY TALK WE WENT TO THE SOURCE—YOU—FOR YOUR BOTTOMLINE BEST IDEAS AND SAVING STRATEGIES. BY ELENA DONOVAN MAUER
REUSE & RECYCLE
“Go online and look at ‘for sale’ items on local boards. I found someone selling used votive holders and got a deal on a box of them. I had to remove the ribbons she had on hers, because they didn’t match my decorations, but that bit of extra work was worth it.” —Lynda, Sterling,
SHOP IN UNEXPECTED PLACES “I thought I’d find our favors in a craft store or at a wedding website, but I spotted some really pretty scented candles at a discount department store for under $2 each. We asked the store to order them in bulk for us, then added personalized matchbooks and put them in white boxes with a I always admired monogrammed sticker. I think they a good friend’s handcame in at about $3.50 apiece total. writing, so I asked her It was so much fun to do these things to address my wedding invitations. She was ourselves.”—Melissa, Greenville, NC honored to pitch in.

Personalize, Affordably
“There are lots of ways to personalize your wedding, and not all of them cost a great deal. I had cocktail napkins printed with our names and wedding date. It cost less than $30 for a huge number, and that one little touch made me really happy.” —Jeanette, Reston, VA
Work Your Contacts
“My friend’s sister is starting a business designing invitations, so she made ours for free. All she asked was that she could keep some to show future clients. They looked so beautiful, we had one framed.” —Amie, Moon, PA “My friend, who is a florist’s assistant, designed bouquets for my bridesmaids and for me. It not only saved cash, but the fact that she created the bouquets for us also made them feel very special.” —Jeanette “Through an acquaintance from college, I found a photographer whose career was just getting off the ground. She was reasonably priced.” —Lynda

COMPARE RENTING AND OWNING “We rented our centerpieces from the reception venue for a low fee. They were wrought-iron hurricane lamps with pillar candles inside— perfect for our nauticalstyle theme!” —Leah, Dorchester, MA
“Before you assume that renting will be more affordable, do a little research. My florist wanted me to spend $5 a pop to rent her vases. Instead, I bought mine from a wholesale supplier for about $2 apiece. —Emily, Pittsburgh, PA
DO SOME DRESS DIGGING
“Shhh! It’s a secret! I bought my dress off the rack. It had been tried on by other people, but it looked just like any other dress— and it only cost me $200!” —Amie “Finding something more upscale in your price range is usually possible— it just takes some extra work. I saved money on my designer dress by purchasing it at a trunk show. Don’t be afraid to shop around!” —Jena, Philadelphia, PA
“
Find a Creative Alternative
“I nixed a wedding video and used a small portion of what I would have spent on it to rent a photo booth—it was between $500 and $600. Guests had so much fun getting their pictures taken with props. We now have a really cute album with photos and messages from everyone!” —Emily
✳
Be Selective About the Extras
“Our site offered a convenient package deal that provided everything we needed for the kind of wedding we envisioned. If you wanted, you could choose to upgrade to matching colored napkins or add decorative chair covers, but we didn’t feel it was necessary. We were happy with what was offered, so that’s what we did. It was awesome!” —Jeanette
“
“We decided to skip the wedding cake. It’s a tradition in my family for relatives to bake homemade sweets to serve at a buffet at the reception. With all those amazing cookies, we didn’t really need a cake.” —Jeanette
We kept costs down by holding our wedding at a public park—the same place where my parents had their wedding reception!
“There are a lot of things brides are convinced they need to buy. I kept seeing decorated card boxes to display at the reception, but in the end, I decided to make one myself. I bought a plain ivory satin box from a craft store, added pretty silk flowers in autumn hues that matched my bouquet and then topped itwith a rhinestone monogram letter. All in all, I think it probably cost $30, and my mom and I both thought it looked much better than the pre-made ones!” —Emily
TIME IT RIGHT
“Because we decided to hold our wedding on a Saturday at noon, the site fee was a real bargain. We served the meal buffetstyle and had open seating. I think people enjoyed the relaxed feel of it because everyone really let loose!” —Beverly, Leonia, NJ
BE CHARITABLE
“At the end of the night, most wedding favors get left behind or thrown away! So we decided to make a donation to our town’s Salvation Army. It felt great to help a local charity, and it probably cost a bit less than conventional favors since we didn’t have to buy fancy packaging or pay shipping costs.” —Emily
Entertain the Possibilities
“My brother is really into music, and he used his laptop to DJ at our reception. All we did was rent speakers. We came up with a playlist together, which was fun, and he was happy to handle the rest. We’re into indie music, so it was nice to be able to hear so many of our favorite songs, which are kind of offbeat, along with more popular stuff to keep our guests happy!” —Jennifer, Jersey City, NJ

ASK FOR SPECIAL TREATMENT
“Some photographers don’t give you the copyright to your photos, but I negotiated to get all the high-resolution image files to reproduce as we like. I was able to design my album using a photo-sharing website. I think I spent no more than $60 on the album, and it turned out just perfectly.” —Jennifer “We saved a lot by choosing a sparsely decorated site. To spruce it up, I wanted to hang puff balls made of colorful tissue paper. You can buy a craft kit to make these decorations, but instead I found tissue paper in bulk and purchased floral wire from a craft store. Then I invited a few close friends over. We made dozens of decorations. Don’t be afraid to ask for help—if you need something assembled, just offer dinner or drinks!” —Lynda “We printed our invitations at home from a kit that I found on clearance at a craft store for under $50. Luckily, I happened to love the ones on sale. If you’re going to go this route, though, I would recommend breaking up the project over a few evenings. Our printer overheated!” —Jeanette 33

best for you. You can go with a traditional religious ceremony at a house of worship, a legal ceremony at city hall or a courthouse or a spiritual ceremony in just about any location, from a tranquil garden to an elegant ballroom or private home. If you and your future husband are of different faiths, consider an ecumenical or interfaith ceremony that incorporates elements from each of your religious traditions.

AMBIENCE Close your eyes and envision your perfect wedding. Is it a bold-colored blast with a trendy fusion menu? Or perhaps a relaxed, nature-inspired affair in stunning shades of green? For inspiration, collect tearsheets from wedding, home and travel magazines along with screenshots from Pinterest and your favorite accounts on Instagram. Look for a common thread—serene blues and greens, for example. Chances are these colors will create the feeling you want. ATTENDANTS The number of attendants you choose is up to you. Keep it small and ask just your closest sibling or best friend, or extend your entourage to include more pals or family members. Do note you aren’t required to have the same number of bridesmaids and groomsmen. BUDGET To get a sense of how much dough you have to work with, figure out how much you and your fiancé can realistically afford, then sit down with both sets of parents to determine what, if anything, they are able and willing to contribute. B-LIST This is just what it sounds like: a list of guests who will score invites to your wedding if any guests on your A-list decline. Here’s how to carry this off without offending anyone. First, send your A-list invites out eight to ten weeks before your event so you have enough time to get responses

DESTINATION WEDDING These weddings are again an option as travel restrictions have eased. Be sure to thoroughly research your dream destination’s marriage requirements. Some mandate that you must be in the country for a specific number of days before the wedding, for example. Another option: Skip the hassle of foreign laws, marry officially in the U.S., and then have a religious or spiritual ceremony and a reception at your destination. EMERGENCY KIT Don’t leave for the ceremony without a kit packed with essentials for tackling wedding-day mishaps like torn hems or broken heels. Some must-haves: Double-sided fabric tape, a small sewing kit, superglue, breath mints, clear nail polish and tissues. ENGAGEMENT PARTIES These are entirely optional, but they can be a fun way for the bride and groom’s family and friends to get acquainted. Any willing friend or relative can host an engagement party but if more than one is planned, the bride’s parents get the first shot if they wish to host. The party can be a traditional cocktail party, a laid-back barbecue or a buffet brunch—anything goes! ESCORT CARDS These cards, which are used to indicate each guest’s table assignment, are usually arranged on a table near the entrance to the dining room. You can get creative with these: For example, you might write names and table numbers on Christmas tree ornaments for a holiday affair; small gourds or pumpkins for a fall fête; or seashells and sand dollars for a summer soirée.

Some surefire tot-friendly ideas: Put a coloring book and crayons at each place setting or provide each child with a goodie bag of small treats like stickers, mini games, crayons and cookies. LIGHTING If hiring a pro is in your budget (they can be more affordable than you might think!), they can do virtually anything from projecting your initials onto the dance floor to spotlighting centerpieces to creating a starry night effect on the ceiling. If you can’t afford a lighting designer, try this: Replace the existing light bulbs with pink- or amber-hued ones which will cast a flattering, romantic glow.

FIRST DANCE Spend a few weeks polishing your steps for your first dance. Whether you waltz, tango or swing, a little practice (or even a few lessons) can make the difference between shuffling nervously around the dance floor or wowing your guests with your smooth moves. GROOM’S CAKE A tradition that originated in the South, a groom’s cake— which can sit near the wedding cake or on a sepXarate table at the reception—is MUSIC a fun addition. Surprise your guy with a confection that suits his hobbies or interests. A baseball fan will love a bat- or hat-shaped cake, while a music lover will appreciate a sweet treat shaped like his favorite Fender Telecaster guitar. You and your fiancé should speak from the heart, but make the style of your vows similar. For example, decide whether you’ll be serious or humorous or both. Consider hiring a planner if you have little time to devote to wedding details or if you’re planning your nuptials from a distance.

So pencil in some quiet time with your fiancé. Whether you hit a hot new restaurant, take in a movie or just share coffee and bagels over the Sunday paper, keep wedding chat to a minimum (no easy feat!) and enjoy each other’s company. OPEN BAR Having an open bar is common at weddings. If you’re concerned about the cost, opt for an open bar for the cocktail hour and then switch to just beer and wine; or serve only beer and wine for the entire event. The one absolute no-no: a cash bar where guests are expected to pay for their drinks. OUTDOOR WEDDING The beauty of a wedding held outdoors can be hard to top. Just be sure to have a solid back-up plan in case Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate. Ideally, you should have an alternate indoor location, but there are other options: Have large tents on hold at the party rental company in case of rain; heaters in case of cold; and fans in case you need to create a cooling breeze. PLACE CARDS At formal weddings, guests are assigned a specific seat at the table, and that’s where place cards come in. These can be as simple as a tented piece of cardstock or as whimsical as a tiny floral arrangement with each guest’s name on a container. Printed menu cards at eac h seat can do double duty as place cards. Just ask your printer or calligrapher to add a guest’s name to the top of each menu. Big Ideas for Small Weddings Elopement expert and photographer Sam Starns tells you how to reimagine your wedding and turn it into an unforgettable adventure.
I
f you’ve been dreaming of a large, lavish wedding your entire life, it’s understandable you may be frustrated by budget constraints or other roadblocks. But hear me out: What if your wedding day wasn’t going to be what you imagined, but better? I want to talk about how to downsize your wedding and instead turn it into an adventure that you’ll look back on 30 years from now and say, “Damn, that was a great experience.” Let’s focus on the three main steps of turning a larger wedding into an adventure.
The guest list. No matter what, you’ll have to trim it. How much depends on your comfort level. Do you want 5-10 of your closest friends and family there or just the two of you? Either way, fewer guests open up more possibilities. You can have a ceremony in places where 100 people would never fit. Want to go crazy and have a ceremony in a hot-air balloon? There are hot-air balloons and wedding packages that can accommodate 12 people. Do you see where we’re going? The possibilities are close to endless.
PHOTOGRAPHY: APRYL ANN
Focus on the adventure, not the wedding. Couples who want to have an intimate adventure wedding or elopement often make a major misstep when dreaming up their day. They think about the wedding first, and the experience second. I strongly advise against this. Because couples often end up thinking “our ‘best day ever’ sort of adventure involves a horseback ride or a helicopter ride—but with the dress and tux? How would we do that logistically? We’ll just stick to a nice park or something.” Think of your “best day ever” sort of adventure first and foremost.
Think of a day that represents the two of you as a couple, no matter what that is. BeHINT: cause why shouldn’t Think about what your wedding day you love to do. What ignites that spark within? be a day that is a Is it something adrenaline reflection of your packed, like parasailing? Or is it more sedate, like a relationship? And peaceful walk through I guarantee that the redwoods? there is a way to incorporate wedding attire and a things that are already ceremony in nearly any advensignificant to the two of you? ture. Horseback riding adventure? It’s possible. Helicopter? An arguably even more important question is this: Easy peasy. Hike to a backHow do you want to feel country chalet? 100% doable. and what do you want to Off-road jeep tour? Also yes.
Dig deep into what represents you. We’ve touched a little on this already, but it bears further delving. This doesn’t just include activities, but we’ll start there. Think about what you love to do, or what you would love to do. What ignites that spark within? Is it something adrenaline packed, like parasailing or a helicopter ride? Does it involve animals, like a horseback ride or a camel trek through Morocco? Or is it more sedate, like a peaceful walk through the redwoods followed by a picnic? Do you like trying new experiences, or would you prefer to have a fantastic day doing

you to look past the obvious words like carefree, relaxed and happy. Get out your thesaurus and look up more alternatives. And these words don’t have to be typical adjectives like “wild” or “adventurous,” etc. They can describe a visual you see and feel. Some sample words to get you started: Untamed...Free-spirited... Laughter-filled... Organic...Exhilarating... Quaint...Emotive Rocky...Mountainous... Paradise...New...Luxurious This word exercise will also help reveal what backdrop and
location best fits your vision. Before you get your collective hearts set on far-flung travel to a remote destingation, do keep in mind that there are a plethora of wedding-perfect locales to be found right here in the U.S., from rocky mountain peaks, to lush tropical forests, to vast red deserts, urban sprawls and everything in between. So, what are you waiting for? Use this time as a reason to go out there and create an adventure. Then use that as your backdrop to commit yourselves to one another. Downsizing your wedding doesn’t have to mean a quick courthouse wedding. It can mean the first amazing adventure of many, with your partner by your side. We were very much in a ‘yes and’ place, and wound up with a party that was true to who we are. I'm so happy that we were able to strike a balance between what we wanted out of the day and honoring the families and cultures that raised us.”

The wedding (headcount: 15) was held the in the backyard of an Air BNB in Tannersville, NY. “A gorgeous property! We strung lights from the trees, and set up a floral hoop by a fire pit,” says Kate. “Our officiant included bits of Ukrainian and Nigerian wisdom into his speech, but beyond that we kept it short and simple.” The reception (hosting 130 guests) was held two days later.

In the spirit of giving back, guests were encouraged to donate to VOW for Girls, an organization working to end the international child marriage crisis. Says Kate, “I cannot imagine being forced into something so significant against my will at a young age. Calling attention to that as a part of my wedding celebration was very important to both of us.”

S
Legally Wed Getting married in Colombia requires many steps. Visas
aren’t required, but couples must translate and apostille their birth certificates, a certificate of no impediment, and valid passports. All must be presented to a Notary office with an application. Once accepted by the Notary, an edict is published in the local newspaper to ensure there is no objection to the union. After 15 days, the ceremony will be approved. The officiant will then file the marriage certificate upon the completion of the wedding.

to consider before you and your new spouse sail into the sunset.
ASSESS THE SCENE
Marrying at sea not only offers the experience of a destination wedding, stunning venues and a customized celebration but it’s also budget friendly. If you’re comfortable with a smaller guest list (most wedding packages accommodate two to eighteen guests) overall costs can be considerably less than those for an at-home affair.

CHART YOUR COURSE
It’s best to start planning a year in advance so that all your guests can properly plan their own travel and to ensure that you have the prime selection of staterooms and other amenities. Determine what time of year and where you would like to wed, check out cruise-ship itineraries and destinations online and contact the ship’s wedding planning team to answer
your specific questions. If a cruise ship will be docked at a nearby port, ask if you can make arrangements for a tour. (You may want to consider setting sail from a nearby port to cut back on driving and airfare costs.) Decide whether to exchange vows harborside or on the ship. Some couples opt to legally wed at home before setting sail and have a symbolic ceremony at sea.
ALL ABOARD
Consider a large cruise ship, where you’ll find numerous venues available for the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception. Marry on an outside deck with the setting sun as your backdrop, on a beach or in a signature restaurant. No matter where you choose to tie the knot and party afterward, the specialized decor and sumptuous surroundings promise an unforgettable experience without sacrificing
the romantic ambience of an intimate celebration. Up the romance for you and your groom with private in-room dining, a couples massage and a just-the-two-of-you onshore getaway. (Princess Perfect Weddings packages start at $2,995; princess.com). ¢
Starship As Princess Cruises’ Love and Romance Ambassador, fashion designer and “Say Yes to the Dress!” star Randy Fenoli says, “Where else can you spend an entire week with your nearest and dearest than on a luxurious cruise ship?” Excursions, onboard activities, day and night entertainment, a casino, spa, pools, spacious staterooms and state-of-the-art restaurants guarantee a week of fun—and quality time—with family and friends.

ALL-INCLUSIVE INTEL
Sandals Resorts is a grande dame in the all-inclusive space.
PHOTOGRAPHY: SANDALS DUNN’S RIVER
Get Going W e’ve done the research, and we know that honeymooners are looking for elevated accommodations, awesome eateries, pristine beaches and even more fabulous pools when they book their trip of a lifetime. We also know that while lazing under a palapa roof with a piña colada in hand is on pretty much everyone’s honeymoon agenda, there’s more to happilyever-after than endless hours getting sun-kissed. That’s why so many of you book all-inclusive resorts. These properties—many found beyond the more wellknown dream destinations of Mexico and the Caribbean—are chock-a-block with activities (often included), excursion options and more. Here, expert intel along with some key terms to know before you get up and go.
There’s more to all-inclusives than simply lounging by the pool, fruity drink in hand. Activities and adventures await! Here’s what that means for you. by Jenna Mahoney
Non-motorized water sports
This is anything on—you guessed it—water that does not require—yup—a motor. Small sailboats, SUP boards, kayaks and oftentimes snorkeling gear, boogie boards and floaties are universally included in the room rate. Many resorts also schedule pool and beach games and offer volleyballs and nets throughout the day. In non-beach destinations (and some with beaches too—Hello, Sandals Grande Saint Lucia) access to hiking trails, the use of bicycles and the use of winter gear like snowshoes are also included in the tariff.
A la carte, AKA add-ons
Depending on your room category, resort brand selection and location, some offerings that incur an additional charge include Jet Ski and snorkeling excursions, motorboat rides, golf and spa treatments. Some resorts require fees for gym amenities or require a spa booking for access. Many companies like Palace Resorts offer resort-credit packages, which can be used toward these kinds of services.
Excursions Off-property adventures and guided tours are nearly always extra. The most notable exception to this rule are safaris—yes, they too are all-inclusive properties. Camps are usually located within a larger preserve, concession or parkland, and the drives (guide-led Jeep tours) are always included in your stay, as are meals and other amenities like laundry service. Adventure resorts and spas may also include gratis activities such as yoga and guided hikes or bike rides. ¢

“WE HAD ALWAYS DREAMED OF HAVING an extremely unique wedding,” shares Seattle couple Liz Freeman and Adam Francis, who said “I do” aboard a repurposed vintage Lockheed Constellation airplane at the TWA Hotel in New York City, a destination itself in the buzzy JFK International Airport. The self-proclaimed travel and architecture aficionados were wowed by the images of the hip hotel they saw online. They wanted a simple and streamlined approach, plus it was super convenient since it is at an airport. Then “once we let our family know that the plan was to get married on the plane in some very retro-inspired outfits, everyone got in on the action and showed up dressed in their 1960s best!”

Today it has been retrofitted for 75 guests and serves as a cocktail lounge. The Connie, as it is called, was the ceremony site for Liz and Adam. When it is not booked for private events, the festive space offers throwback-inspired cocktails (the “Vodka is My Co-Pilot” is a must-sip) and snacks from the golden age of travel.

And there’s a 24-hour waiting period.
Airport hotels aren’t normally known for their superior dining, but in keeping with its concept of being more than your run-of-the-mill layover spot, TWA excels in the food and beverage arena. The marquee attraction—the Sunken Lounge—offers cocktails with kitschy names and shareable plates showcasing timehonored American fare. The true culinary standout is Paris Café by Jean-Georges—the restaurant that hosted the couple’s celebratory dinner—a modern take on classic dishes as interpreted by the superstar French chef. 78

Fact: Queens, the borough in which the TWA Hotel is set, is among the world’s most diverse. It is here where contemporary art is on display in a decommissioned school at MoMa PS1, the history of film is showcased at a refurbished movie studio and a surf culture swells at Rockaway Beach. Sports enthusiasts gather at venues across the borough for Grand Slam tennis, pro baseball and recreational cricket. Visitors can sample cuisine from all over the globe—Indian rules in Jackson Heights; Korean and Chinese is treasured in Flushing; and Greek and Mediterranean in Astoria are among the myriad options.

DECADE AGO, DANI PINES AND her extended family spent a week around Christmas at The Somerset on Grace Bay in the Turks and
Caicos, a spectacularly gorgeous collection of Caribbean islands ringed with stellar white sands and brilliant turquoise waters. “We loved every second,” explains the bride, who, together with her family has since celebrated each holiday season at the intimate hideaway on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. “The island

and the hotel mean so much to our family. It’s such a special time for all of us to take a break from our hectic lives and spend time relaxing, boating, eating and enjoying life together.” After her now-husband Micheal Sabin was invited to join in the holiday getaway in 2022 and the couple became engaged, it was a no-

tradition! tradition!
“We are proud to say we had a Jewish ceremony to honor our religion and heritage,” the couple says. “We were married under a chuppah, which represents a Jewish home symbolized by the cloth canopy and the four poles. The chuppah is open on all four sides to signal the hospitality, love and warmth we plan to incorporate in our future home. As per tradition, Michael’s grandfather’s tallit (prayer shawl) sat at the top of the chuppah.” Their officiant, the bride’s uncle, celebrated the memory of the couple’s grandparents. Another singular ingredient was unplanned—a bit of liquid sunshine AKA rain as Dani and Michael swapped vows. ➺ 85
REAL DESTINATION WEDDING
The couple didn’t have a rain plan, which made their vows more memorable, says Dani.
Island favorites conch fritters and rum punch were served.
“There’s no party better than a wedding dance party.”
The most Instagrammable spot is “honestly, everywhere,” says Dani. “I love the pink bougainvillea flowers throughout the resort and wanted our first look to be near those. The pool also offers the most gorgeous view as it’s an infinity pool looking out into the ocean.”
island explorations While lounging and strolling along the
pristine beachfront are favored activities at the Somerset Hotel at Grace Bay, the couple and their guests also enjoyed venturing further into the island’s offerings. For boating, Dani loves the Island Vibe Tours outfitter, which offers half- and full-day private excursions (the sail to Iguana Island is a family favorite). The company also hosts parasailing, another top choice for the couple. The resort’s concierge, whom the bride says is “like family,” can arrange all outings as well as golf and Jet Skiing—two more activities the guests enjoyed.
hosted a Thursday night dance party at their favorite island eatery—Da Conch Shack. “Da Conch Shack is our favorite of all time,” they say. “It’s a vibe and the food is so local, fresh and delicious.” More top spots include the oceanfront Bay Bistro, which catered the couple’s reception and is open from breakfast to dinner, and Coco Bistro, a seafood outpost set amid the island’s largest palm grove. For a romantic evening, the couple prefers Infiniti Restaurant & Raw Bar at Grace Bay—“the most gorgeous setting” with a showstopping Japanese Speakeasy Menu offered along with an haute selection of local favorites.
