etiquette ADVICE

A Q Wedding

&

Straight talk, smart solutions by Mary Clarke, Editor in Chief

BE SEATED

Q

Do we need to explain to our ushers where to seat guests for the ceremony or can they just seat them at random? Usually the first few rows are reserved for the bride’s and groom’s immediate families, so you’ll need to let your ushers know who those people are and to seat them accordingly. Traditionally, the bride’s parents sit in the first row on the left (facing the ceremony site), along with her grandparents and siblings. If the bride’s parents are divorced and prefer to sit separately, the mother and her husband or partner will sit in the first row while the father and his wife (or partner) sit behind them in the second row. Other special relatives may be seated in the second and third rows. The groom’s family is seated in the same manner, but on the right side.

A

BRIDAL PARTY PRESENTS

COURTESY OF PENZI WEDDINGS

Q A

When is the best time to give our attendants their gifts? Most couples give their gifts to the wedding party at the rehearsal dinner. Following the main course, dessert is served and the toasts begin. Just so you know, it is customary for the best man to start off by toasting the couple, followed by the groom’s father (traditionally the groom’s parents are the hosts of the event). Afterward, you can acknowledge your attendants and give them their gifts. How you do so is entirely up to you. You can keep things lighthearted and fun or be a bit more sentimental. You can make a general announcement and dispense the gifts all at once, or you might want to say

something special about each member of your wedding party before presenting that person with your memento. Do what feels most natural and comfortable. One couple we know chose to have an intimate bridalparty-only barbecue at their home the day before the rehearsal dinner, and distributed their gifts then. We’re sure your friends will appreciate however you choose to honor them.

SAVE-THE-DATE DILEMMA

Q A

Do we need to send out a save-the-date notice to everyone on the guest list? It depends. We recommend that you send all your guests save-the-dates (six to eight months in advance) if you are planning a destination wedding, marrying von a holiday weekend or even if your celebration will take place at a location that gets booked up early, like a beachfront resort or a hotel near a ski resort. However, if you’re marrying locally but inviting anyone who will need to travel, send save-the-dates to the out-of-towners only so they can make their arrangements for transportation and accommodations well in advance.

BEAUTY BUDGET

Q

Am I supposed to pay for my bridesmaids to have their hair and makeup professionally done? As much as I’d like to, it would be quite costly. You definitely aren’t obligated to pay for their hair and makeup; they can take care of that on their own. There are some

A

brides who are able to absorb the fees as a thank-you to their attendants, but if your budget is limited—and with costs being as high as they are—don’t feel pressured to take on this additional expense.

IN-LAW REQUEST

Q

My fiancé’s sister-in-law wants to be in my wedding party and his mom said it’s proper etiquette to include her. Is this true? I don’t know her well, and have other friends I’d prefer to ask. There is no rule stating that a spouse-to-be’s sister-in-law should be in the wedding party. And don’t feel pressured to ask anyone you’re not close with. She probably wants to be included because your fiancé’s brother (her husband) will be either best man or a groomsman. You can still include her in the ceremony by asking her to give a special reading at the ceremony. And make sure your fiancé supports your decision— especially with his mom.

Is the Wedding Dress the New Bouquet?

I

narguably, flowers are an important part of the wedding day from the bridal bouquet to decor to floral details on the dress. More and more we are seeing the significance of flowers as a key element of the actual wedding day look (take a peek at our Wildflower fashion story on page 43). Designers like VIKTOR&ROLF have always had a soft-spot for blossoms big and small. Even their iconic fragrance FLOWERBOMB pays tribute to these natural beauties in both name and scent. Our VIKTOR&ROLF MARIAGE cover look on model Alli Salo is a modern departure from the classic gown, yet it marries a perfectly pitched romantic moment with coolgirl swagger via it’s sheer flowery bodice. It was hard to choose between these three flower-forward looks, all from VIKTOR&ROLF, but the jumpsuit made the final cut. We love that you can have your bouquet and wear it too!

Every season brings fresh, new looks; innovative new brands; and an exciting outlook on fashion for the bride. Our biggest takeaway from the Fall 2025 collections was that the “trends” were replaced with designers speaking directly from their hearts to brides with designs that reflect their individual point of view. If you’re as skin-obsessed as we are, you’re probably more than familiar with the growing popularity of K Beauty. K stands for Korea, a country consumed with complexion perfection that not only glows like glass (hence, the arrival of glass skin) but achieves an almost impossible standard of uber-healthy agelessness. For thousands of years, the Korean beauty philosophy has preserved a nature based regimen that combines innovation with clean, plant-based, organic ingredients (and yes, that includes the curious inclusion of ingredients like snail mucin and bee venom), and now modem actives that tum a layered beauty routine into a luxurious, holistic experience.

lessons learned Working with so many brides over the years has taught celebrations and wedding expert David Tutera a surprising thing or two.

through pictures, trying to get to the root of her and her fiancé’s personalities. To that end, create a collection of images that inspire and delight. A trained planner, event designer—or any creative wedding vendor—will be able to pull from this information and deliver a wedding that really reflects your style.

Another thing: brides have no idea what vendors cost. They are completely unaware of the actual costs of such things as die-cut or letterpress printing or an out-of-season peony. It is difficult to comprehend the labor that goes into lighting or the time that goes into a perfectly fitted bridal gown. It’s critical to educate yourself on costs so that you aren’t taken by surprise and can budget properly. A wedding—although a one-day event—still requires a ton of behind-the-scenes work from professionals—and the costs will reflect that.

Brides really want their partner involved in the planning process, but are unsure how to go about it. I personally love this, as I’ve always felt that couples need to look at their wedding as a joint union and not just as the bride’s day. I always suggest the couple start with the elements the groom really enjoys. For some, it’s the music, for others the menu. For some it’s actually the fashion! Work together on those things first, compromising as needed, and then continue on to other planning aspects.

So many of my brides tell me they want a wedding that is unique and unexpected. But as much

The confusion often starts with the gown itself.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I’ve worked with brides who are determined to come up with one unforgettable element that is so out-there it becomes altogether inappropriate. For those who’ve watched my work on TV you see this all the time. But it happens with my private weddings too: I had a bride who wanted to be lowered down from a trapeze in her bridal gown from

I’ve found that most brides do not really know how to dress for their body type (or even what their body type is!). fter over 30 years, I can say that there are some universal truths when it comes to working with brides. Feeling overwhelmed? You’re not alone. Almost every bride is suffering from nonstop information overload (now more than ever), which can lead to a place of confusion.

as they want to achieve that, they make decisions based on safety and traditionalism. Don’t be afraid to step outside of the box. You don’t need to spend more money, you just need to believe in taking a few chances so your wedding becomes your wedding.

body file BREAKFAST

Jump Start

Get your biggest day ever up and running with these healthy breakfast ideas. Say “I do” to vegan pancakes! These 6-ingredient pancakes are made with water instead of milk, pure maple syrup instead of sugar and baking powder instead of eggs. 100% vegan and 100% delicious!

OLIVE OIL PANCAKES 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt ¾ cup water 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup, plus extra for serving Olive oil In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together water and maple syrup. Add the liquid to the flour mixture and whisk until just combined. Do not overmix; the batter should have some lumps. For each pancake, pour ¼ cup of batter onto a nonstick skillet drizzled with olive oil, flipping the pancake when small bubbles appear on the surface. Let pancakes cook on the other side until lightly browned, about 1 more minute. Top with a swirl of maple syrup or olive oil. Serves 2 to 3. —Chloe Coscarelli, vegan chef, author and restaurateur

The question is, what do you eat in the morning that takes little time to prepare, will help tame a nervous stomach, and won’t make you feel bloated? Here, two easy ideas:

STEEL-CUT OATMEAL is a good—and comforting—source of protein and fiber. This recipe reduces oatmeal’s traditionally long cooking time down to just 10 minutes thanks to an overnight soak. 4 cups water 1 cup steel-cut oats

¼ teaspoon salt Every bride should feel and look gorgeous on her big day. I created this berry anti-inflammatory smoothie to impart a beauty-from-within-glow. Blueberries, blackberries and walnuts deliver next-level anti-inflammatory powers to up your skin’s radiance quotient. Prepare some extra servings for your bridesmaids PHOTOGRAPHY: MIKI DUISTERHOF (COSCARELLI); CHLOE COSCARELLI (PANCAKES)

and share the clean, green love!

BERRY BEAUTY SMOOTHIE 1 frozen banana (or swap for 1 avocado to reduce sugar)

1. Bring 3 cups water to boil in a saucepan. Remove pan from heat; stir in oats and salt. Cover pan and let stand overnight. 2. In the morning, stir 1 cup water into oats and bring to boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium and cook, stirring occasionally, 4 to 6 minutes. Top with nuts, syrup or dried fruit. Serves 4.

HARD-COOKED EGGS are a terrific source of protein. They aren’t cooked with any extra fat that could upset your stomach or make you feel bloated, and they travel well if you’re on the move. Why this recipe works: Boiled eggs that start in cold water are hard to peel, so the trick is to place cold eggs onto a steamer basket above boiling water. This cooking method ensures that the shell will slip off easily.

¾ cup frozen blueberries ¾ cup frozen blackberries 1 ½ cups unsweetened almond milk ¼ cup raw walnuts

1. Bring 1 inch water to rolling boil in a saucepan over high heat. Place

1 cup baby spinach

2. When eggs are almost finished cooking, combine 2 cups ice cubes

eggs in steamer basket. Be sure to use large eggs that have no cracks and are cold from the refrigerator. Transfer basket to saucepan. Cover, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook eggs for 13 minutes.

Combine all ingredients in a high-performance blender (I recom-

and 2 cups cold water in medium bowl. Using tongs or a spoon, trans-

mend Vitamix) and blend until smooth. Yield, 30 ounces; serves 3.

Inspired by Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter,” the planning and design geniuses at House of Pearl Design, Jessica Ashley Events and Terry Kaye Events took a modern Americana theme and ran with it, beginning with a sweet “Cowgirl Barbie” welcome dinner bursting with color and pattern. The Western theme got a jumpstart with a belt-buckle seating chart, while Chiavari chairs in yellow provided a cheery complement to the pastel-print linen tablecoths, bright flowers and sherbet-hued decor.

The vibe took a rustic-but-chic turn outside the venue’s farmhouse, leaning into natural elements like wood and dried flowers. The whimsical wedding chuppah was constructed with raw birch limbs and bedecked with flowers, ferns 5 and grasses. Intimate, open-air tented lounge areas were set with leather and wood chairs for the cocktail hour, where a wooden bar cart stood at the ready, serving up cocktails, plus lemonade and sweet tea.

The reception was set inside Sweat Meadow Farm’s airy barn with an eclectic mix of table and seating situations. Bold leather menus and personalized menu cards played against soft custom fabric runners and draperies. The floral design pivoted to moodier, refined tones of eggplant and emerald for both centerpieces and ceiling installations. The elegant simplicity of textured and tiered wedding cake by Cakebee stood out quietly against the surrounding pattern and color play.

OUT OVERSTATED DESIGN IN QUIET LUXURY • “We are finding that most of our couples are leaning into beautiful, luxurious designs that focus more on quality than quantity,” says Tyler Speier of Tyler Speier Events. • “We love juxtaposing some minimalist elements with a more maximalist backdrop. For instance, juxtaposing a more minimalist tablescape against an intricate European-inspired villa. Or juxtaposing intricate, lush tables against a more modern, clean space.”

Easy elegance. 28 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Jan/Feb 2025

OUT DELICATE COLOR PALETTES IN GOING FOR THE BOLD • “Bolder color palettes are being requested,” says Michelle Cousins of Michelle Leo Events, “with jewel tones and dark, moody colors making a comeback for late fall/early winter weddings. We’ve even experienced brighter/bolder color palettes for our summer weddings this year, which is a breath of fresh air!” • “Color is finding its way into all parts of weddings,” says Jove Meyer of Jove

to tabletops, ceiling installations—even dress codes.” • “Ceremonies are no longer white and green, notes Meyer. “They are bursting with color, and the new trend is little to no greenery. Let the beautiful flowers and their colors be the focus.” • “Some popular color palettes are sunset— think oranges, pinks, yellows,” says Meyer. “The wildflower palette is also popular— think sunset, but add some light blue, light purple, whites, and greens.” • “Color schemes are shifting towards striking contrasts, with black and brown emerging as a new go-to pairing, while vibrant shades like ‘brat green,’ aka chartreuse, continue to capture attention,” say Bianca Hall and Erica Vanco of Estera Events.

Color starts with the invites!

Look up!

Technicolor candles extend the palette.

OUT MINIMALIST STATIONERY IN ARTISTIC TOUCHES • “The most requested artwork for invites is of venue illustrations,” says Kelley Nudo, client relations, Momental Designs. “This is especially appealing to couples who have selected venues with breathtaking architecture or idyllic views.” OUT UNDERSTATED FLORALS IN LAVISH, TEXTURED FLORALS • “Floral installations don’t need to just be made with flowers,” says Speier. “We are seeing lots of branches, twigs, vegetables, fruits, and unique blooms/textures being requested by clients.” • “Tight flower arrangements are on the way out,” says James Abel of James Abel Events. “Looser flower arrangements have a more organic feel, and brighter colors are bringing tabletops to a new level.”

Taking a guest-centric approach.

“WHEN COUPLES CHOOSE TO LEAN INTO A WHITE OR NEUTRAL WEDDING PALETTE, THEY ARE DOING SO IN BOLD WAY VIA COLOR BLOCKING, AND HAVING GUESTS ALSO MATCH THE ALL-WHITE OR SHADES OF WHITE PALETTE.”

OUT ROUND TABLES ONLY — JOVE MEYER IN CREATIVE TABLE LAYOUTS • “Long rows of rectangular connected tables allow guests to sit closer together and engage more intimately,” says Meyer. • “Oval tables are also making a comeback; they have the benefits of a round shape mixed with a rectangle, and add character to the room’s design.” OUT PLAIN TABLETOP DECOR IN FABULOUS FABRICS • “Textured linens are trending in wedding design because they add a layer of visual interest, creating a rich, tactile experience," say Hall and Vanco. “Patterns are also making a strong statement, with chinoiserie making a comeback.” ➺

The sweetest things.

OUT THE MID-CENTURY CHAMPAGNE TOWER IN SIGNATURE COCKTAIL TIERS • “We’re still seeing that Champagne towers can kick off a cocktail hour or reception,” says Diwan. “But they’re more for a beautiful toast or more importantly, a beautiful photo op. Instead of Champagne, couples can have all the glamour of bubbly with a signature cocktail, like the Espresso Martini. Aperol Spritz is also still going strong.” • “We are also seeing drink towers made from Lambrusco in the fall and sparkling rosé in the summer, or for those who just love pink bubbles!” says Meyer.

OUT WINE AT THE COCKTAIL HOUR IN HERB-INFUSED COCKTAILS • “Herb-infused cocktails are gaining popularity for their fresh, aromatic flavors featuring herbs like basil, rosemary and thyme,” says Nancy Parragué Barclay, partner, Paula LeDuc Fine Catering & Events. Couples are leaning into disco balls, Meyer says.

SHORTER CEREMONIES • “We are finding the ceremony itself becoming shorter,” says Speier. “But I think it’s important that they are not too short. We coach our couples that the ceremony is the heart of the day. While it doesn’t need to be long, it needs to be heartfelt, intentional, and long enough for everyone to feel the significance of the moment.”

IMAGINATIVE DRESS CODES • “Couples are adding descriptions to their dress codes, so guests need not guess or interpret; instead, they are clear,” says Meyer. “A dress code I love: Formal Attire. Wear What Makes You Happy. Another one was: Festive Black Tie, Add Your Own Sparkle and Shine!”

PROFESSIONAL CONTENT CREATORS • “For couples who engage content creators because they want to post their special moments on social media ASAP, it’s very important to clearly communicate both needs and expectations, so that content creators, photographers and videographers work together as a team,” says Cousins.

OUT FITTED MERMAID GOWNS IN DRAPED WEDDING DRESSES • “Think Greek goddess,” says Sneh Diwan of Diwan by Design. “A draped gown moves with the body, allows for graceful ease of movement, and creates a serene feeling.” • “There’s also a lot of corseting and strapless. At some point during the wedding weekend, brides are opting for something corseted.” • “For the bride, we’re still seeing jumpsuits trending on and off the runway,” say Hall and Vanco. “A jumpsuit offers a more contemporary, androgynous look. And don’t be surprised if a few more bridesmaids opt for tuxedos this year.”

Go out with a bang!”

• “We are also seeing vintage phones being used to record audio guestbooks, which can then be turned into vinyl for couples to listen to after their wedding.”

MID-STRENGTH COCKTAILS • “Moderation made easy,” is how Brynn Smith, director, Bar Next Door, sums up the appeal of cocktails crafted with spirits that range beween 25-30% alcohol by volume as opposed to fullstrength spirits with an ABV of 40% or more. “A thoughtful selection of beverages shows consideration for your guests' preferences and helps everyone fully enjoy the night.”

This is great for couples who are hosting a wedding weekend for their guests. With an earlier end time, they can be more refreshed for the last day of activities with their loved ones.”  31

If I Could Plan it Again...

Brides are planners. They craft color schemes, decode guest lists, crunch numbers, and plot for weeks to pull off the ceremony and party of a lifetime. And almost universally they succeed. Still, no matter how many times a bride crossed her T’s and dotted her I’s, inevitably, there are details she wishes she’d handled differently: missed photo opportunities, vendor mix-ups, decorating delays. To help you avoid these snafus, recent brides have shared their big-day regrets. We then asked wedding pros to examine what went wrong so you don’t wind up repeating their mistakes.

32 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Jan/Feb 2025

PHOTOGRAPHY: DAVID MORENO PHOTO

WE ASKED BRIDES TO REVISIT THEIR WEDDINGS AND TELL US WHAT THEY MIGHT HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY.

THE TAKEAWAY Engvall says she encourages her brides to keep cell phones out of sight the entire day. For brides who haven’t opted for a wedding coordinator, she suggests giving a family member or member of the wedding party a list of all the vendors, with phone numbers and email addresses, as well as a timeline for the day. Inform all of your vendors whom you’ve designated as your point person for the day, she adds.

THE MOST I’d get personal recomREPEATED REGRET mendations before hiring a vendor. AMONG BRIDES? Dianne G. took her time before NOT HIRING A making even one call to prospective vendors. VIDEOGRAPHER “I read articles and web reviews, and really did my homework,” says the New Yorker who TO CAPTURE KEY I’d lock in a venue before the planned an intimate wedding in a lush SoHo other details—like my dress! MOMENTS. courtyard. When it came time to choose a “You’d think in the city of New York finding a venue would be easy,” says Danielle F., “But we didn’t nail down the space until September and our wedding was in December. Meantime, I’d found my dress in June, and had moved ahead with many other details. I’m just lucky the dress I picked worked for a wedding in a modern space in a SoHo hotel.” THE TAKEAWAY While brides no longer have to follow strict dress rules (who says a sequined ballgown won’t work for a backyard affair?), finding and securing the right location should be a top priority, says Alison Laesser-Keck, creative director of Alison Bryan Destinations. Because the reception dominates most couples’ budgets, it’s smart to get started pronto. “There’s a domino effect to wedding planning decisions,” explains Laesser-Keck. “Each choice is tied to the next one—and if one decision is even the tiniest bit off, it can throw things out of kilter in a major way.”

non-denominational minister to officiate, she found someone whose sample texts were impressive. “We met in person and really seemed to click,” she says. About two months before the wedding, however, the officiant bristled after receiving an email from Dianne outlining a few details. “He called me in

I’d hire a videographer.

Having endured too many viewings of hours-long wedding videos, Christine G. didn’t once consider hiring a videographer to capture her lakeside nuptials. But a year later, she confesses, she’d love to be able to hit play and revisit the day she was married on the shores of Owasco Lake in Auburn, NY. “I never thought I would say that, but I know I would cry every time I watched it.” THE TAKEAWAY Christine’s not alone in this regard—it was the most repeated “regret” among brides we interviewed. Michelle Engvall, owner of Married With Michelle, a wedding planning boutique in Seattle, says having a videographer “is money well spent, and it doesn’t have to break the bank.” She suggests looking for a professional who offers a “highlights” video package. “These are typically 5 to 10 minutes long, and tell the story of the day from start to finish in a condensed version.” Expect to pay in the neighborhood of $1,500 for a short, edited video with sound.

I’d enlist someone to field my calls the entire day.

On the morning of her August wedding in Annville, PA, Lauren S. woke up excited and relaxed. That soon changed when her phone started to ring. “At first it was family members calling with good wishes,” she recalls. “But then some of the vendors started calling with minor questions or updates.” Lauren wasn’t fazed until her florist phoned to say she was having trouble getting into the church. “That one did get me flustered.” Then it was Lauren’s turn to pick up the phone—to find out why the limo hadn’t arrived to take her to the church. “Someone did finally suggest that I ask one of my bridesmaids to field the calls, but I wish I’d asked someone to do this sooner,” she says.

attack mode and I knew I couldn’t have him marry us.” She scrambled and found a replacement, but wishes she’d had personal recommendations from friends. THE TAKEAWAY “Definitely check references,” says Engvall, “but it’s nice to also seek referrals from your friends, your planner or other vendors so you have some firsthand accounts of their reputation and service.” It’s also a good idea to ask everyone their preferred method of communication. ➺ 33

The country club that Emily D. chose for her reception was perfect. Even better, the club had an on-site event planner. “The planner was one reason we booked that venue,” says Emily, who lives in Philadelphia. “But she quit her job two months before our wedding.” A new planner came on board, but she was “totally overwhelmed,” as the club had started a big construction project. Emily found herself stepping in to press the management to clean up areas she’d been promised for the reception. “I still get peeved when I see the machines and mess in the background of our photos,” she says. THE TAKEAWAY On-site planners do shoulder a lot of the reception details, streamlining the process for many couples, but keep in mind that you’re signing a contract with the venue and not the planner, says Engvall. To give you more peace of mind, make sure you’re meeting with the person who’ll be on duty the day of your reception, pose a few “what-if” scenarios (including any future on-site renovations) and make sure you’re comfortable with their answers. And definitely read the fine print in all of your contracts before signing.

I’d give the photographer more direction.

A pale pucker isn’t the only thing Madeleine would re-do. She also wishes she’d prepared a shot list for her photographer. “I absolutely loved my photographer, but so many pictures from the ceremony were taken from a balcony when I was hoping for more close-up shots,” THE TAKEAWAY “A photographer doesn’t know what a bride wants unless the bride tells her,” says wedding photographer Laura Yang. That’s where a detailed shot list comes in. Keep in mind that lighting and setting also play a role. “If a bride loves the sun-splashed, airy images she saw on her photographer’s site she can’t plan her own wedding inside a dark hotel ballroom and expect her photographer to produce the same look,” Yang says.

I’d DIY in advance.

I’d start my honeymoon two days later.

THE TAKEAWAY DIY-ing favors or other decor elements can help save money, says Laesser-Keck. But adjust your timeline so that everything’s ready to go a couple of weeks in advance. “And definitely enlist the help of close friends and family members. Handmade touches are wonderful, but be realistic about what you can pull off,” she says. “You want those days leading up to your wedding to be easy.”

THE TAKEAWAY Engvall says it’s worth delaying your travels for a day or two. “Most couples appreciate not having to think about packing for a big vacation while they’re also worrying about everything that needs to get done for the wedding.” 

Having worked in the catering business, Sarah K. had a firm grasp of what’s needed to pull off a smooth reception for 350 guests. She carried this organizational style over to other aspects of her wedding, which took place in Wheeling, WV, working closely with several vendors. Two things she did decide to DIY though, were creating the ceremony programs and crafting ribbon wands. “The final week before our wedding was pretty stress free, thanks to my many check-off lists,” says Sarah. “But knowing that I had to get so many wands made and also put together the programs is something I wish I’d gotten out of the way sooner.”

I’d reapply my lipstick.

“It’s a little thing that still drives me crazy: I never reapplied lipstick after the ceremony!” says Madeleine, who hosted a vintage-Hollywood bash in Waco, TX. “Now, when I look back at pictures, my unglossed lips are all I see.” THE TAKEAWAY Bare lips, shiny foreheads, smeared mascara—makeup mishaps are all too 34 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Jan/Feb 2025

Sarah and her new husband hired a limo to take them from the reception at 3 a.m. for an early morning flight to Jamaica. “Big mistake. It felt like we missed an entire day because we were so exhausted.”

A Final Thought “There’s always going to be one

thing that’s not completely perfect,” says Alison Bryan’s LaesserKeck. “But that doesn’t mean that the decision you made was bad. So rather than get stuck on that one thing, just let it go and remember how amazing the day was. You’ll look back and you won’t have any regrets.”

I’d be more assertive.

DIY FAVORS CAN HELP YOU SAVE MONEY. JUST MAKE SURE EVERYTHING’S READY TO GO A COUPLE OF WEEKS BEFORE THE BIG DAY.

common, says Laesser-Keck. “The day is just going to fly by and it’s natural for brides to forget about this detail.” She suggests handing your maid of honor a small pouch that contains your lipstick and some blotting papers, a stain removing wipe, and a dryer sheet to handle static. “Ask her to remind you after the ceremony and once during the reception to do a quick retouch.”

Fashion designer, “Say Yes to the Dress” star, and Princess Cruises’ Love and Romance Ambassador Randy Fenoli offers his best advice on how to plan a stellar celebration at sea. by Diane Forden

Q.Why have a cruise ship wedding? A. It’s not just a wedding: You and

your guests get to take a week-long vacation and enjoy a variety of activities. Plus, you won’t feel as if the wedding day went by in a blur and you didn’t spend enough time with guests. The possibilities for fun are endless!

Q. How soon should a couple start planning?

A. Begin the process at least a year in advance. You want to make sure you get the suite you want and you need to give your guests enough notice as well. Keep in mind that your guest list (and budget!) will be smaller (wedding packages accommodate up to 18 guests) so invite people you really want to be with. Q. Can you have a personalized wedding?

A. Yes! Princess Cruises’ wedding

team will customize every detail of your celebration. Whether your style is low-key and minimalist or colorfully extravagant, the music, food and decor can be personalized to show who you are as a couple. I guarantee

A windy beach or outer deck may call for a more controlled hairstyle (and non-sticky lip color). Always have a trial run beforehand either at home or in the ship’s beauty salon. Bring your headpiece, take lots of pictures to have as a reference on the big day, and record the makeup and colors used so there’s no secondguessing. BUDGET BLUNDERS 1 2 AVOID THESE WEDDING-SPENDING PITFALLS WITH OUR SPOT-ON SOLUTIONS.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, you don’t want to think priorities; you want to revel in dreams! Sorry, sister—if you don’t wake up, you’ll become mired in bills without really knowing why (um, who thought the Rolls-Royce rental was a good idea?!). THE SOLUTION: Start with a realistic overall budget (which will involve planning meetings with your fiancé). Then list, in order of “gotta have it,” your wedding details, says Debi Lilly, owner of A Perfect Event, in Chicago and Nantucket. “That way you can put your dollars on the higher priorities, and spend less on what isn’t so important.” One example: A foodie couple might prefer to host a fabulous dinner for 50 that includes wonderful wine, whereas a couple who loves a party might invite 100 or more for a simple buffet and splurge on a white-hot band. 36 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Jan/Feb 2025

NOT READING THE FINE PRINT

Don’t skip reading anything, and if you have questions—no matter how seemingly insignificant—ask immediately. This is extra critical when it comes to clarifying payment terms. You want to know exactly when payments or balances are due; if there are any minimum charges, corkage fees for wine, cake-cutting fees—or any other possibly pricey unknowns. If your wedding is a year or more away, be sure to block in guaranteed prices on catering and liquor. THE SOLUTION: Never ever sign any contract on the spot; always take it home and read over everything, making note of any and all questions and concerns. If a vendor pressures you to sign, take that as your cue to move on to the next vendor. Nothing is so urgent that it can’t wait at least overnight.

NOT SETTING BUDGET PRIORITIES

3

LEAPING BEFORE YOU LOOK

You walk into the first reception venue on your list, fall in love and reach for the pen to write a deposit check. Sometimes that works fine. Other times, it doesn’t. A week later, you may hear about a place that costs less and offers more services. Then you have to cut from your budget in other areas. THE SOLUTION: Spend some time investigating. If you’re the spreadsheet type, go ahead and plug in details—cost, services, extras, terms— for every vendor you consider. Even if you end up going back to that love-at-first-sight place, you know you did your due diligence.

4

FALLING PREY TO PEER PRESSURE

So you just went to a wedding that featured free-flowing champagne, lobster and filet mignon and a fabulous band. Stop right there—and refuse to try to keep up with those particular Joneses. Why? They may not have actually paid for all those bells and whistles (credit cards, anyone? wealthy parents, perhaps?). And anyway, even if they could afford to pay for every detail themselves, who says that will make them happy? More importantly, who says copying them will make you happy? THE SOLUTION: Repress the urge to impress other people, says Lilly. Imagine that you’re in a safe little bubble, where you’re unaffected by others’ choices. You’ll be more likely to stick to your budget.

5

GETTING STUCK ON “SHOULDS”

You must have pricey favors. You need napkins that match the fancy silk tablecloth overlays that, of course, you must have. But to quote the song, all you really need is love. (And a wedding license, right?) THE SOLUTION: Ask yourself, as you consider every extra detail, whether it will be something you’ll care about in the future. If you’re convinced you’ll be upset to think back on a wedding without a videographer, then by all means hire one. But if you realize that looking back on a two-

minute ride in a snazzy car is unlikely to mean much to you, feel free to skip it.

6

NOT KNOWING WHAT YOU BOTH WANT

Ever go food shopping, without a list, when you’ve skipped lunch? You probably spent too much on stuff you didn’t need. Same thing with weddings: When you’re unsure of what you want, you’re susceptible to sales pitches, to vendors pushing for more expensive choices, or to someone who insists you need, say, engraved invites. THE SOLUTION: Figure out what you really—really—must have. After that, financial decisions come easier.

9

NOT THINKING CREATIVELY

Let’s say your sister chose to have dozens of long-stemmed red roses in tall crystal vases on every table at her reception. Must you follow suit—especially since you know full well that this option is rather pricey? Maybe it isn’t the best idea. While doing exactly what your sister did may be safe, it probably isn’t economical. THE SOLUTION: Be imaginative. What if, instead of the red roses, you chose local blooms? Or what if you asked a florist to create one centerpiece that you and your friends can use as a template for making the rest yourselves? You’ll save lots on the labor that the florist would have to put in.

7

LETTING YOUR GUEST LIST GET THE BEST OF YOU

You may feel you’re being generous when you extend the invite to your entire office or to peripheral plus-ones, but you won’t feel quite so expansive when you’ve strained your budget to the breaking point. THE SOLUTION: Start by figuring out how many guests you can actually afford. Then make your initial “A” list, dividing it into columns detailing your own guests, your groom’s and your parents’. Now comes the hard part, where you have everyone chop names from their “A” lists to create a “B” list. Make sure to order extra invitations and reply cards and send these after the initial RSVPs come in and you know you’ll have space for some of the “B” listers. You may be able to invite a few people that you cut from the original list—without breaking the budget.

8

STUFFING YOUR GUESTS

We get it: You’re so afraid that your wedding will be the one where guests go home hungry or unhappy that you overorder food or try to dazzle everyone with a seven-course dinner extravaganza rather than a more modest but perfectly adequate two. Rest assured, no one at your wedding will starve: “A reputable catering company will never underestimate how much food you’ll need,” says Lilly. And keep in mind that the more menu choices you offer, the higher the cost. THE SOLUTION: “Always be sure to tell your caterer what your budget is, and what kinds of food you want to include in the meal, and then let her work her magic within the parameters you give her,” says Lilly. “Remember, you’re paying for the wealth of her expertise, so trust her to do the job right!”

10

TRYING TO DO IT ALL

Attempting to handle every last detail yourself can end up costing you because you simply don’t have time to research the most economical choices. THE SOLUTION: Enlist help. Though wedding planners come with their own costs, hiring one might save you money. Another way to share the work and save money? Delegate jobs to friends and family— you may be surprised at the fine options they come up with. Also, many brides who have talented friends ask for their help with decorating, invitations or flowers. People are usually happy to pitch in and contribute to the success of a friend’s big day. n

A love of science led this couple to hold their nuptials in Chicago’s Field House Museum, with their floral chuppah set beneath an elegant spinosaurus skeleton.

The table decor was touched with garden details, the palette was made up of sunset tones, and there were candles to impart a glow throughout.

AFTER A SERIES OF NEAR-MISS MEETINGS at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, “we ultimately connected on Tinder,” says Jett Applebaum née Levin. They went on to date long-distance while Elaad earned his Ph.D in astrophysics from Rutgers and Jett taught middle school in Illinois. Four years later, Elaad asked Jett to meet him at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium, where he proposed. So elated was the bride, she forgot about the ring, plunging her hand into a Sturgeon touch tank. No matter: Both bride and ring sparkled at a surprise engagement brunch the next day.

The dress code may have been black tie, but the vibe was “anything but stuffy,” says Jett. It was all about “dancing, dining and dinosaurs. We love the Field Museum. After the ceremony, we enjoyed a cocktail hour among the exhibits. It was wonderful to chat with our guests and to admire Sue, the Field’s T-Rex!”

Keeping to the prevailing theme, the couple’s ceremony music was from Jurassic Park. Later, “We kept the celebration going with a phenomenal hora dance,” Jett says. “It’s my favorite part of any Jewish wedding. We felt so loved and supported as our friends lifted us up. There was so much joy—the whole experience was a blast!”

Go surfcasting, lobstering, visit an oyster farm and marvel at the charming historic architecture that lines the golden shores of the quaint island of Nantucket when you book an outing on the “Wauwinet Lady,” the house boat of the eponymous grande dame hotel. Cruises are all helmed by Captain Rob, who also shares the art oyster shucking with passengers. RESTAURANT TIPS

NAVIGATING THE WINE LIST

SNIFF, SWIRL AND SIP LIKE A PRO WITHTHESE NEED-TO-KNOW TIPS. by Jenna Mahoney

“Egads, the wine list!” is the first thing that goes through my head each time I am handed the book of beverages at a restaurant. Since I refuse to believe I’m alone in this behavior, I got some expert help in the art of picking the best bottle for your romantic honeymoon dinner. Cheers!

ASK THE EXPERT

Ask your server or sommelier what has her most excited on the menu, and let her know what your preferred tastes are. Red and fruity? Or something more crisp and dry? Based on that and your dinner selection, the sommelier should be able to suggest a wine to complement your meal. Also, ask her why the pairing is recommended.

GO FOR PRICE

There’s no need to feel compelled to buy the most expensive bottle. Choose a price point and don’t be ashamed to stick with it. “The least expensive wine is not always the worst,” says Rajat Parr, a vintner and master sommelier. “There is a reason it is on the list—it may be a great value.”

TAKE A SIP

Once you’ve selected your wine, your server will open the bottle tableside and offer you a small pour to try. While handling the glass, hold it by the stem, as your hand temperature may affect the overall taste. Check for any corkor lingering sediment, which may indicate the wine isn’t at its prime.

GIVE SOME FEEDBACK

Upon trying your wine, tell the sommelier what you like about it— or don’t like. Instead of saying, “It doesn’t taste as I expected,” try: “It has a bitter edge” or “I like the buttery flavor.” If your glass of wine tastes like wet cardboard, say so immediately. This means the wine may be corked (or tainted). Note: It does not mean that bits of cork are in the glass. Technically, a corked bottle is the only one you should send back, but Parr assured me that you can refuse any wine— for the right reasons. “Of course, if you’re clear in your descriptions in the first place, you shouldn’t have any problems.”

Such was the case for Kavya Kelagere and David Wilkinson, who live in Anchorage, Alaska by way of India (her) and Scotland (him). Family and friends “flew in from the USA, Canada, India, and Scotland, which was the halfway point for many,” explain the couple. “Cameron House was the perfect location,” they say. “From first arriving, being met by the helpful concierge staff with their quirky Scottish jokes, reception staff and wedding coordinator, we felt welcomed.” Add the incredible offerings—outdoor pursuits among the natural surroundings, and emblematic-of-Scotland adventures like falconry and golf—plus a spa, seaplane, “even a cinema,” and the setting was a fairy tale realized for the couple and their guests.

“We embraced the color red, symbolizing good luck and fortune.”

Their celebration was very personal.

“Vegas is a classic balance of luxury and debauchery. We wanted the party atmosphere in a place where our closest friends and family could really let loose,” they say. What they got was an only-in-Vegas, vintage-style celebration complete with new tattoos. “Vegas makes a great party.”

The couple swapped vows in the penthouse suite.

“Sons of Cakery did our vintage-themed, pink heart cake.”

Strip favorites: “Don’t sleep on the Conservatory and Botanical Gardens at Bellagio if you like design or florals. They change it every season and it’s always a magical time,” says the couple. Alex and Shelby wanted an intimate party that was downright fun. ALL-INCLUSIVE GUIDE

All This Plus a Wedding Swap vows in the sand, by the pool or just-the-two of you at your favorite all-inclusive resort. by Jenna Mahoney

Say “I do” to it all.

It’s a Team Effort

From the Bahamas to Jamaica, from the Riviera Maya to the Riviera Nayarit and everywhere in between, all-inclusive resorts have wedding coordinators on staff. The teams helm it all, from coordinating off-site vendors and distributing in-room welcome bags to helping navigate the local legal requirements. In addition, many have package themes to select from, which include flowers, cake styles, table linens and decor options as well as other details. Even better, many of the resort groups like Palace and the robust selection of hotels by World of Hyatt All-Inclusive Collection have teams that specialize in specific cultural traditions for ceremonies and dietary needs for Hindi and Kosher couples, among others.

as idyllic, thanks to the aforementioned amenities plus ultraromantic spots to swap vows, including gorgeous beaches, quiet gardens, stand-alone chapels (some even overwater!) and spots that overlook pools, not to mention on-site teams to take care of your Big Day decisions—both big and small. Here are four reasons why you should consider saying “I do” at an all-inclusive resort.

It’s a Good Deal

According to some experts, the national average cost of a ceremony-and-reception wedding in 2024 was $33,000 but all-inclusives with ceremonies as low as $1,000 promise more of a bang for your bucks. Just as all-inclusive resorts are aptly named and famously include all the amenities in a single tariff, this approach is also extended to wedding offerings, most notably with no cost for ceremony sites. Most outposts have packages with pricing that are based on guest numbers so there are no surprises at the end of the Big Day stay. Often there are also resort credits based on room nights that can be used toward à la carte offerings such as golf and spa treatments. Another savings: Transportation. Hosting all of the wedding weekend events from the welcome party to the farewell brunch at one place means

you don’t have to organize—and pay for— transportation between locations.

It’s a Group Vacation

Ask any nuptial couple and they’ll all agree the best part of hosting a wedding is being with all your closest friends and family. When you host a wedding at a tropical destination, every single day (and night) is a time to gather with your guests, be it poolside, on the beach or at one of the hotel’s awesome eateries.

It’s Free

No, it’s not a typo. Some resort groups like Sandals and Beaches and Excellence Resorts offer free wedding ceremonies. Packages vary, of course, and have minimum stays. It’s also recommended to book in advance, since many countries have legal requirements that the on-site staff will need time to organize with you. 

ll-inclusive resorts are a honeymooner’s dream. After a year or more of planning and making decisions on all the vendors, all the details and all the splurges versus savings, it’s a joyful feeling to arrive to a warm welcome complete with a chilled beverage and the opportunity to leave your wallet in the safe for the entirety of your stay. Turns out hosting a wedding at an all-inclusive resort is just

he Caribbean coast of Mexico— that sun-splashed stretch of golden beaches lined with sparkling hotels—is one of the world’s most popular honeymoon destinations for a reason. There are robust entertainment and cuisine choices, an array of cultural and historic sites and—perhaps most famously—the coastline is chockablock with hotels to suit every style, from palapa-roofed boutique lodgings to modern all-inclusive resorts. The latest to join this impressive collection is AVA Resort Cancun, a sprawling expanse encompassing 1,600 accommodations—all ocean-facing—across garden-laden grounds punctuated by six swimming pools, a waterpark, pickleball courts, watersports docks, a giant spa and 27 food and drink outposts. Along with modern amenities that reflect the activities of the region that make it so popular, the resort flaunts contemporary— and chic—decor throughout. Common areas are airy and expansive, with chic furnishings, captivating art installations, wood accents and awesome water and property views. Guest rooms, which range from standard sea-view selections to suites big enough for entire bridal parties, mirror the modern design ethos. Some offer-palapa roofed outdoor spaces; romantic tubs for two and kitchenettes (room rates start at $700 a night and are all inclusive; avaresort.com). — Jenna Mahoney
