A Q

etiquette ADVICE

Wedding

&

Straight talk, smart solutions by Mary Clarke, Editor in Chief

NUPTIAL NEWS We’re planning a tiny wedding. How do we announce our upcoming marriage to those family members who won’t be invited without upsetting them?

Q A

These days, there’s no reason to stress over constricted guest lists, given that mini-monies have morphed from “new normal” to perfectly appropriate and acceptable. And you don’t even have to think about sending out a formal wedding announcement until after you’re married. But in the interest of keeping feathers unruffled, you, your partner— and both sets of parents—should let extended family members know as soon as possible that yours will be a very small wedding. They may be disappointed, but will certainly respect your wishes and appreciate the heads up. HOME SWEET HOME My fiancé and I would like to have a wedding at my parents’ home. They have a lovely backyard and we think it will be both more personal and cost-effective. What do we need to consider?

PHOTOGRAPHY: MANDA WEAVER PHOTOGRAPHY

Q A

There are quite a few things to take into consideration. While an at-home wedding can be lovely and unique, there are a number of details that may not prove as cost-effective as you’d like. Rental fees are required for the tables, chairs, linens, silverware and glassware, for example. You might want a tent for shade. Depending on the weather, you may need heating lamps, fans or an air-conditioning unit. You’ll need to make sure the kitchen

is large enough to accommodate a catering staff (a concern even if you’re hosting a small celebration). There should be enough electrical power available to handle kitchen needs, entertainment and lighting, so a generator may be necessary. That said, if you research all of these factors and a wedding at your parents’ home still fits into the budget, then by all means go for it and enjoy the festivities! DIVA BRIDESMAID One of my bridesmaids just told me she does not want to take part in the “financial aspects” of being an attendant or to participate in any required planning for my upcoming wedding. How do I handle this?

Q A

Simple: Tell her that as much as you would have loved having her in the bridal party it’s probably best if she takes part in your wedding in some other way. (You can ask her to do a reading during the ceremony.) Paying for her attire and pitching in on a number of other planning aspects are all part of being a bridesmaid, and it wouldn’t be fair to your other attendants to expect them to do all the heavy lifting—not to mention the animosity that would create. Our guess is she will probably be relieved. DANCE DILEMMA At my daughter’s wedding, am I expected to dance with my ex-husband after the father/daughter and mother/son dances? I’ve remarried and would not want my current husband to feel slighted.

Q

A

It’s considerate of you to ask. No, you’re not expected to dance with your ex-husband. When the parents are called to the dance floor, your partner can be your new husband and your ex can dance with his date or wife (if he’s remarried as well). SHOW ME THE MONEY We would love to buy a home soon after we marry and use any money we receive as wedding gifts for a down payment. What is the proper wording for this type of request on our invitation?

Q A

Wedding invitations should never include requests for gifts of any kind. The only way to let your guests know your preference for cash is by word of mouth. Friends and family members can inform invited guests that you plan on purchasing a home and would prefer a monetary gift but they should also graciously add that any type of gift would be greatly appreciated. You can set up a cash gift registry so guests are able to make contributions online. But do not count on receiving enough money for a down payment: Couples often overestimate how much they’ll receive. More than likely, you’ll need to save quite a bit more yourselves before reaching your goal. ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. WOW

There are so many ways to wow your wedding, from the venue, the menu, the flowers, and the parties before and after. And let’s not forget the dress, like the stunner on our cover from Christina Wu Brides, all shimmery and lacy light. She is a Wow-ser! After our cover shoot with our beautiful model, Kylie Vonnahme, we sat down with our makeup artist extraordinaire, Deanna Melluso to talk shop. You’ll want to lean in for this next bit. “Forget the trends. It’s all about the glow! The most important thing is to hydrate and eat well.” Okay Deanna, say more. “Of course I use a little help from my friends. My tool kit includes a favorite, the Micro-Firming Wand from Kat Burki. After a relaxing face massage, I bust out the wand which stimulates blood circulation, reduces swelling, and detoxifies skin. It feels great, like a gentle micro current massage that helps de-stress. Make sure you hold your skin taut and hold the tip of the wand upward, sweeping gently across skin for best results. I like to use a good moisturizer and then get to work with the wand. Afterward, I apply Skin Activator Serum from Westman Atelier. This helps your foundation glide on and it gives your skin a glow even before you apply foundation. The key to great skin is all in the prep.” LET’S GLOW! Shimmering lace, slim A-line gown with 3D sequin flowers, $1,800, by CHRISTINA WU BRIDES. BANDED PLIES: 1.Take a low or medium-resistance exercise band and fold it in half, holding one end in each hand. Stand with feet wider than shoulder width, with toes and legs turned out. Extend arms straight out in front of you at shoulder level. 2. Bend your knees as you extend your arms wide, keeping arms straight, and stretching the band as you go. Return to starting position. Do 2 sets of 20 reps. Focus on keeping shoulders down and your core engaged. “This move targets arms, plus glutes and thighs,” Piskin says. ask david ADVICE

You DoYOU Celebrations and wedding expert David Tutera tells you how to tune out the noise and unsolicited opinions that come with planning your big day.

T

his is your day! How many times have you heard that phrase? Yet I’ve noticed that somehow when a girlfriend becomes a fiancé, she seems to lose all confidence in both the smallest and largest big-day decisions. And this is not a good place to find yourself when you’re in the midst of wedding planning.

CROWD CONTROL

KNOW THYSELF

PUT IT DOWN ON PAPER

There are hundreds of truths you know for sure about yourself. Start by free-associating the things that bring you joy. What’s your favorite color? What are some of your favorite foods? As for me, I love the color blue, and I could eat desserts (anything sweet) every day from now until forever. Now it’s your turn—and your wedding: When you close your eyes, what do you see? Elegant touches like red roses and crystal? Or do you see yourself dancing under the stars to a bluegrass band in a field of wildflowers? What is your heart saying? Listen to it, trust it and know that every

Now that your creative bridal juices are flowing, write everything down, and start compiling a planning binder. As the process unfolds, you can start filing vendor contracts and timelines as well. Once you have your ideas, plans and inspiration in one place, you’ll discover that this organization has given you the luxury of feeling cool, calm and collected—literally! Bonus confidence-building points: having hard-copy notes, images and plans you can point to will go a long way toward keeping everyone else’s opinions to a minimum: You already know what you want, so others will be less likely to rush in with conflicting ideas.

A BFF with Benefits Enlist a friend or bridesmaid to act as a buffer throughout the planning process. Let her be the one to keep you above the fray when it comes to navigating potential landmines such as dress-shopping and catering decisions. Consider the same strategy for the big day itself, when you might need help smoothing out awkward situations: a guest whom you’d rather avoid; the mother-in-law who swoops in at inopportune moments.

YES YOU CAN Trust your instincts. You automatically reach for the perfect accessories for that little black dress. Why should it be any different when it comes to the big white gown? Did you love your hair during your trial run? Not so much? Bring in a few more pictures of what you had in mind and try, try again. Your stylist wants you to feel amazing, so don’t settle until you feel like the princess you are. Be straightforward, stay organized and think positive thoughts. I always say a calm bride is a happy bride— and what is more beautiful than a happy, confident woman? 

Everybody is going to have an opinion, whether helpful or not. Isn’t it amazing how everyone wants to weigh in? That’s why I always suggest my brides keep the size of their advice entourage to a minimum. DAVID’S RULE OF THUMB: SURROUND YOURSELF WITH A SMALL This is my number-one rule. Too many GROUP OF POSITIVE PEOPLE. TRUST YOUR GUT AND LISTEN voices can make you lose sight of your TO YOUR HEART. THEY WILL NEVER STEER YOU WRONG. vision. This is your day. FEAST FOR LESS

TAKE A BITE OUT OF YOUR CATERING BUDGET WITH THESE PRO TIPS. BY SHARON NAYLOR

Sit-down Dinners

• “Instead of offering your guests their choice of three entrées—such as a beef, fish and chicken dish—create a duo plate like a surf-and-turf with fish and beef medallions to give guests a variety on the one plate,” says Laura Bianco, wedding planner at My Bellissima in Morristown, New Jersey. You’ll save as much as 40 percent, since you don’t have to buy enough of each choice to suit guests who wish to change their entrée orders. • Chicken, turkey, pork and pasta are the least expensive entrée options. • Talk with your caterer about dressing up those less costly chicken or pasta dishes with a delicious gourmet sauce, such as a balsamic glaze, a tropical mango salsa or a creamy five-cheese sauce to create a luxe, four-star dining feel at a much lower price per guest. • Christopher Confero, owner of Christopher Confero Design in Birmingham, Alabama, says, “Think local and think seasonal,” since locally acquired, in-season menu items always cost far less than imported foods. • Serve a vegetarian entrée as one inexpensive menu option. • Ask your caterer to create a gourmet presentation of side dishes, such as dollop of pearled couscous with a zesty zucchini “slaw” or asparagus topped with fontina cheese. 28 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Jan/Feb 2024

• Combine your appetizer and salad course, for example, by serving a few mini crabcakes with a mesclun salad. • Serve vendor meals. To the vendors, that is. Most banquet halls offer a vendor meal for $20 or so to keep those eight band members, photographer, videographer and wedding coordinator fed for less than your guest meal price. • “An open bar is a must, but just serve a variety of fine wines and beer with a signature cocktail or two,” says Bianco. “This way, guests who have to have a rum or vodka drink are happy, but you’re not paying an enormous price for a full,

Ask your caterer to help you choose the best-priced meats and seafoods, selecting what’s plentiful and well-priced right before your wedding. You may be able save 40% or more.

PHOTOGRAPHY: DOCUVITAE

Formal, sit-down dinner receptions are not always the most expensive option; pricing will depend upon your choice of menu and bar elements.

Hand pass expensive items, like shrimp. Guests will eat less than they would at a station, but they’ll still feel indulged.

top-shelf, unlimited bar. You’ll save 25 to 30 percent off your budget.” • Leave shots off your bar menu and save a fortune. • Garnish your signature cocktail creatively with curled lemon peel, colorful sugar rimming or exotic fruit spears to make drinks look pricier than they really are. • Eliminate corkage fees. Ask your site manager to waive the price charged when bartenders open each bottle of wine. This $2 per bottle (or more) charge is often easily negotiated out of your contract. • Skip pricey liquor-infused after-dinner drinks like Irish coffee, and instead serve flavored coffee and cappuccino.

CAKE & DESSERTS • Choose a two-or-three-tier wedding cake that is iced with fluffy buttercream frosting and piped with colorful dots— instead of an expensive, labor-intensive fondant replica of the lace and beading on your wedding gown. • Display a faux cake made of frostingcovered Styrofoam tiers for visual effect, and then serve cake slices from a less inexpensive but equally guest-pleasing sheet cake that’s kept in the kitchen. • Skip the Viennese dessert table and serve your wedding cake with two or three luscious desserts, like chocolate-covered berries and Chantilly cream fruit tarts. • “I adore a late-night passed dessert tray, filled with delectible bite-sized treats you can pop in your mouth and savor,” says Confero. Bite-sized brownies, mini cupcakes or doughnuts, dark chocolate fudge squares and other inexpensive desserts perfectly fill the bill. • Performance desserts are so dated, which leaves you to feel free to skip the flaming bananas.

An elegant cocktail party may take place during the daytime or evening hours and is often a semi-formal event. • Mix stations with hand-serving so that guests enjoy the upscale service aspect. “Be sure the food is presented beautifully at stations or at a bar, with attendants presiding over each to keep everything neat,” advises event designer Michelle Rago, of Michelle Rago Destinations in New York City. • “Consider offering a wine and food pairing, like a wine and cheese station,” says Maya Kalman, wedding and event coordinator at Swank Productions in New York City. • Calamari and mussels often cost less than shrimp, lobster and crab. • Skip the raw bar—it’s one of the priciest stations for a cocktail party. • Guests love inexpensive hummus in flavors like roasted red pepper and pesto, offered with pita triangles.

Es ipsamet ea dolenihit ullandunt am core

• Pasta is one of the least-costly station options, but go with choices like pumpkin and goat cheese, spinach and brie, or lobster and goat cheese for a more impressive twist. • Another always popular yet inexpensive idea is a Thai station with lots of tasty noodles, colorful vegetables and spicy sauces. • Instead of pricey seafood sushi, create a guest-pleasing veggie sushi station with hand rolls made of brown rice and filled with avocado, pumpkin or sweet potato. • Especially in fall weather, a soup bar is a budget-friendly option that impresses and warms guests with shots of creamy lobster bisque, acorn squash soup, clam chowder, potato and leek, and other seasonal flavors. • A hot trend in budget-friendly stations is the risotto bar, offering creamy gourmet risotto with toppings. It’s a new spin on the old-fashioned mashed potato bar. • Make your inexpensive cocktail party menu items look more stylish by serving them on unique plates in cool shapes and colors. ➺ 29

A comfort-food bar, such as one featuring inexpensive macaroni and cheese with toppings, will cost about one-third the price of a meatcentric station.

• “Have a vodka-tasting bar. Staff it with a vodka expert as a special offering that impresses guests. You’ll still save on the cost of a full, unlimited bar,” says Kalman. • Add fruity-fresh sangrias to your drinks menu for a trendy drink that stretches how much you get from each bottle of wine. • Plan a champagne-cocktail bar. Guests can select a half-champagne, half-fruit juice or nectar drink that triples each bottle’s serving capacity.

CAKES & DESSERTS • “I always love to create a dessert station of hot, freshly baked chocolate chip cookies,” says Rago. “They’re totally irresistible!” • “Have a server hand out little servings of really good ice cream,” Rago suggests. • Pick from your baker’s basics list— think crowd-pleasing standards like vanilla, lemon, red velvet—and skip the pricier cake and filling options, including liquor infusions and other exotic flavors • Another fee to try to negotiate out of your contract: the per-slice cutting and plating fees that some event sites charge. • A platter of fruits like mango and pineapple isn’t expensive and saves guests lots of calories. 30 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Jan/Feb 2024

Brunch

“I love brunch receptions,” says Michelle Rago. “They’re so cheerful, happy and uplifting.” Here are some clever budget-saving ideas for your daytime reception. • A local restaurant or hotel may make it simple for you by offering the perfect brunch with a wide array of menu options and prices per person. Even the highest rate will be considerably less than it would be for a dinner. And who doesn’t love brunch? • Provide just one seafood station, say, for smoked salmon. • Have a made-to-order station. Guests enjoy the chef’s attention as they watch him whip up a custom omelet, pancakes or crepes made to their taste. These are also great conversation-starters for guests as they give their orders and wait for their plates. • Give a classic a gourmet twist. “If your chef offers an eggs Benedict made with lobster or crab cakes, it feels like luxury,” says Kalman. “I also love a blini station topped with a touch of caviar.” • Some hotels and restaurants will give each guest a complimentary champagne or mimosa. “Champagne cocktails, mimosas or bellinis are elegant drinks for a brunch reception,” says Bianco. And remember that you’ll save lots on alcohol since most guests won’t be overindulging at this time of day. • “Offer the best Bloody Mary bar ever, with great add-ins, or have a server walk around with a Bloody Mary serving station on a cart,” suggests Rago. Guests will enjoy having their drinks whipped up while they watch. • Provide a budget-friendly coffee, tea or chai bar.

CAKES & DESSERTS • Choose a simple, pretty cake in a light flavor such as vanilla or lemon, which will be delicious and less expensive without the additional cost of decoration and multiple flavors. Skipping elaborate sugarpaste designs (these are better for a formal evening wedding) will keep the presentation clean and fresh. • “Brunch calls for light and airy desserts, such as parfaits, whipped mousse with fresh mango—nothing heavy like a chocolate lava cake,” says Kalman. • Cupcakes impress on a budget, as do mini pastries and fruit tartlets. Platters of eye-pleasing sweet treats are great crowd-pleasers. • Brunch is perfect for fresh and refreshing fruit platters, or pretty dessert cups filled with sweet mandarin oranges. Remember that a single type of fruit looks more sophisticated than a mixed fruit cup. ¢

planning notebook ADVICE

One of the best ways to tell if you click with someone you might hire is by contrast. Plan to meet with at least five photographers. Don’t worry about the details—albums, timelines, deposits. Save them for later. Schedule a series of digital meetings, using Zoom or FaceTime to save time and eliminate unnecessary travel. When you meet, there are only two key things you need to know. First, “is this person able and willing to give me what I want?” And second, “do I sense that, as people, we click?” Once you’ve met with enough photographers, those who feel right will be clear. Use these opportunities to see how well you communicate with each other as you narrow the field.

Ask your potential photographers to Having show you images from an entire photographers wedding they’ve shot. It helps clarify show you images from their ability and gives a more complete an entire wedding sense of their style. But just seeing isn’t helps clarify their ability and gives you a enough. oogling “questions to ask a wedding photographer” produces the same advice again and again: questions like “How long have you been in business?” “What’s your style?” or “What happens if you become ill?” These are all good questions, and you should plan on asking them. But in today’s world, with so many photographers to choose from, it’s more important than ever that you click with the photographer you choose. Here, some guidelines.

Clicking with your photographer means you like their style of photography. This is important because you don’t want to have to ask them to emulate someone else’s style. It also means you feel safe—confident he or she will give you great results—you like talking to each other, you understand each other and neither of you will need constant clarification. Clicking means that you sense that your photographer wants to do a good job on your wedding day and if something goes wrong, you’ll feel confident that he will make it right.

what they like and don’t like. Express your opinion and weigh each response. Does it feel right? If you felt eager for the meeting to end, you probably weren’t clicking and it probably doesn’t matter how good their photography was for another couple.

Be aware there are two categories of photographer: art-oriented and customer-service oriented. There are incredible photographers in both categories and the two categories are not mutually exclusive. What matters is what resonates with you. An art-oriented photographer might take longer on your wedding day and cause schedule delays in order to get the perfect shot or the right light. But couples that click with them will treasure the results. A customer-service oriented photographer, on the other hand, will be prompt and have a streamlined process that helps your big day run smoothly. There is a chance, however, that a truly outstanding photo can be missed for the greater good. There is no right or wrong here, there is only what feels right to you. As you review potential photographers’ wedding portfolios, asking about the logistics and backstories behind select shots will reveal which way your photographer leans. Ask yourself: Which would be better on your wedding day?

Once you’ve met with enough photographers, the one who feels right should be a clear standout: You like his or her photo style, the photographer makes you feel comfortable and confident and you’re communicating with ease in anticipation of your beautiful day. Congratulations—you’re clicking! Photographer William Petruzzo is based in the Washington, D.C. area and is a member of PPA, Professional Photographers of America. OUT COOKIE CUTTER WEDDINGS IN “Custom is in!” says Michelle Cousins of Michelle Leo Events. “Clients are interested in booking venues where it’s possible to build out custom spaces, backdrops and even show-stopping tents. They typically select a venue located in a place that holds history for them throughout their relationship.”

OUT WASTE IN “Couples wanting to extend their drive and passion for sustainability to their wedding ceremony,” says McKenzi Taylor of Cactus Collective Weddings and Electric Sugar Elopements. “Single-use items like balloons are replaced by wildflowers that are growing on-site or even the dramatic clouds and the sunsets taking place right in front of us. Confetti (or even non-native flower petals) can be replaced with fallen leaves gathered on-site.” • “Silk flowers are definitely eco-friendly,” says Sneh Diwan of Diwan by Design. “There are no floral sponges, which are not the greatest for the environment. Silk blooms are also more economical. And when you’re ‘faking it,’ you can have whatever flowers you wish, at any time of the year.”

OUT QUIET COLOR PALETTES. “Couples are moving away from shades of white and ivory with a pop of metal, like gold, rose-gold and silver,” says Jove Meyer of Jove Meyer Events. IN “More couples are leaning into colors,” says Meyer. “Some are more moody, others more pastel, and some all one color, like pink, but using various tones of that one color. Color is joy, and joy should be the center of every wedding celebration!”

OUT FAREWELL BRUNCHES IN “As wedding weekends get longer and more events are hosted, we’re finding that more of our couples just want to sleep in the morning after their wedding,” says Tyler Speier of Tyler Speier Events. “A popular alternative we’ see are more postwedding pool parties the afternoon after the wedding. Tacos, Margaritas, sunshine and your friends giving the weekend one last hurrah...” OUT JUICE-BASED MOCKTAILS. “Mocktails are so much more than alcoholfree cocktails,” notes Meyer. “They are stand-alone drinks that are thoughtful, hand-crafted, and delicious!” IN “When crafting a mocktail, keep in mind the season and location,” says Meyer. “Some of my favorites are a Passion Fruit Spritzer, a blend of passion fruit pureé, lime juice, simple syrup and seltzer, and also a Blackberry Fizz, muddled blackberries, lemon juice, seltzer, and bitters.” •“With elevated menus and design, the bar is not a place to overlook,” adds Speier. “We love a good mixologist who can elevate the bar experience and bring in shrubs, tinctures, and all sorts of amazing ingredients to create craft cocktails.”

Raising the bar. Red alert.

Watch for it!

“BARBIE-CORE WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE AN INFLUENCE IN WEDDINGS AS THE TREND WILL CATCH ON NOW FOR NEWLY ENGAGED COUPLES AND SHOW UP IN 9 TO 16 MONTHS FROM NOW AT THEIR WEDDING. BEYOND ALL THINGS PINK, BARBIE-CORE AT ITS HEART IS ABOUT JOY AND BOLD, FUN CHOICES, AND WEDDINGS ARE LEANING MORE IN THAT DIRECTION OVERALL. SO BARBIE-CORE IS HERE TO STAY!” – JOVE MEYER

OUT DELICATE BLOOMS IN “STATEMENT FLORALS—from hanging floral installations to floral walls, large-scale ceremony installations to flowers climbing up trees—are at the forefront of wedding design,” says Speier. • “We’re seeing an increase in floral budgets,” adds Cousins. “And ceremonies that include floral-heavy backdrops, ceremony aisle florals and lush centerpieces at the reception as well! “ OUT PLAIN TABLE LINENS IN “With its luxurious texture, velvet is having a moment,” says Diwan. “Sometimes we’re mixing velvet with printed fabric for some tables, brocade for others. It’s all about injecting texture to elevate tablescapes.” ➺

THURSDAY IS THE NEW FRIDAY “I think that all weekend weddings should quietly begin on Thursdays,” says Lindsey Shaktman of Mavinhouse Events. “I love when couples host their immediate families for an intimate dinner … before all their guests arrive in town.”

EARLY CEREMONY “As for the wedding [during the wedding weekend], I recommend considering an early morning or noon ceremony,” says Michelle Norwood of Michelle Norwood Events. “This allows guests to return to their lodging quarters to rest and freshen up before the evening celebration.”

An artful seating plan.

INTENTIONALLY DESIGNED SEATING CHARTS “From elaborate walls that also serve as decor moments to intentional, handwritten notes from the couple to each guest, the seating chart marks the transition from cocktails to dinner,” says Speier. “And, if done right, can really make an impact on the guest experience.”

SKIPPING THE TRADITIONAL WEDDING PARTY “We are seeing couples just stand up at the wedding by themselves,” says Speier. “We are loving this trend, as it makes the focus more on the couple and 34

OUT POSED, FORMAL WEDDING PORTRAITS IN “Candid photography and videography is widely sought after because it captures the real and raw moments of the day,” says Cousins. “Most photographers will plan to get some posed photos with family and the bridal party, but these types of images are kept to a minimum.” •“Wedding day content creation is picking up steam,” notes Taylor. “Couples are coming to us wanting behind-the-scenes and candid moments captured for use on their social media channels. We’ve been able to fill that need with a dedicated camera operator. It’s really been a hit for us!” Cheers!

BACK TO THE BALLROOM “COVID was keeping everyone outside for so long, but now we have couples who want to have their entire reception in one place,” says Natalie Good of A Good Affair. “The ballroom is the perfect setting for a big band to play into the wee hours of the night.”

LIGHTING UPDATE “Instead of candles on tabletops, consider more residential-style mini lamps to provide illumination and a contemporary feel,” say Park and Wang.

FOCUS ON CONNECTION “My couples have been shifting into designing receptions that are focused less on the dance floor and more on giving guests the opportunity to reconnect with one another,” says Mandy Connor of Hummingbird Events & Design. “It feels more comforting and indulgent.”

CHEERS TO CHAMPAGNE TOWERS “A nod to mid-century Mad Men-era glamour, champagne towers are making a comeback at the cocktail hour,” says Diwan. “It’s a more intimate gesture, and works well when there are fewer than 100 guests.”  35

arefree summers spent with her family in the Adirondacks instilled in Veronika Paikin a love of both travel in general and the spectacular setting in particular. So it was a no-brainer when it came to choosing The Sagamore Resort as the venue for the soon-to-be-doctor and her fiancé, Danil Kukovitskiy, a project management consultant. The two met at a party at a mutual friend’s, locking eyes a few times before

Veronika “made the first move,” as the couple tells us. After that fateful evening, they dated for about two years. It was on a trip to the West Coast to pursue their shared love of nature and hiking when Danil saw the perfect chance to “take the next step in the relationship,” popping the question at a spot overlooking the forest and mountains of Kings Canyon National Park. “Yes!” said Veronika, as she jumped into Danil’s arms.

Veronika and Danil’s contemporary wedding incorporated many key parts of a more traditional Jewish ceremony, such as the chuppah, the exchanging of rings, the seven blessings and the breaking of the glass. “We also had a private reading and signing of the Ketubah with our closest friends and family,” the couple said. “One major issue we ran into was the difficulty of finding a rabbi for the ceremony, since it was the day of Rosh Hashanah,” they continued. “With that in mind, Danil’s father studied with a rabbi and was able to officiate a beautiful ceremony.”

landmark property in Cape May located on the edge of New Jersey’s seashore is like stepping into a storybook. Called the country’s first seaside resort, the charming town—and this stately property—has been welcoming guests for more than a century. Congress Hall was first built in 1816, and its offerings are wholly modern while still celebrating its rich history. The main eatery, the Blue Tavern is a former gaming hall, and there’s a subterranean pizzeria called the Boiler room that occupies what was once the hotel’s enormous laundry facility. Beach cabanas and umbrella set-ups are popular in summer (room rates start at $170 a night; congresshall.com).

This pastoral property in Vermont is a classic New England hideaway whose 112 acres encompass hiking trails, apple trees, a trout pond, a covered bridge and a cluster of charming white buildings. The expanse at the base of Haystack Mountain all began with a farmhouse in 1842. The sheep-and-cattle estate then became the summer home of Bertha Eastman Berry, editor of the Social Register. Over the years, buildings including a carriage house and the inn were added and opened to guests in 1962. In 1971, it became a hunting lodge. The property was recently refurbished by a local couple (room rates start at $450 a night; thehermitageinnvermont.com).

This waterfront Sorrento hotel, which has been run by the same family since 1834, dazzles not only with its historic amenities but also with an impressive guest list that includes Princess Margaret, Luciano Pavarotti, Oscar Wilde and Sophia Loren. Rooms here are individually appointed and some are influenced by their famous fans. Reigning details include touches such as linen sheets, porcelain espresso cups with delicate covers and pizza-making classes hosted at an outdoor oven in a lemon grove. In addition to the Michelin-starred, only-in-Italy haute cuisine, the property’s pool, which sits on the site where Emperor Augustus kept his pool is an unparalleled hallmark (room rates start at about $906 a night; excelsiorvittoria.com).

Hamilton Princess & Beach Club.

HAMILTON PRINCESS & BEACH CLUB This grande dame has been welcoming guests to the pink shores of Bermuda since 1885. The 410-room hotel, which is also known as “the Pink Palace,” sits on an Insta-perfect harbor that can be viewed from a spectacular infinity pool and many of the sumptuous guest rooms. In World War II, the site was an intelligence center for Britain and the Allies. It is also said that Intrepid, the property’s elevated eatery, got its name from the British Intelligence agent who was the inspiration for the character James Bond. Another restaurant, the 1609, recently opened and offers a Latin menu (room rates start at $485 a night; fairmont.com). ¢

Tulum

THIS CALIFORNIA COUPLE SHARED ONE OF THEIR FAVORITE PLACES WITH THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILY FOR A CELEBRATION THAT SHOWCASED THE DESTINATION’S MANY RICHES.

“WE FELL IN LOVE WITH Tulum when it was one of the first places we traveled to together in our first few months of dating,” say Brittan Mariel Bonilla and Alex Andres Miramontes Bonilla. “Then, during our second year of dating, we moved to Tulum for about a year, and from then on always knew we’d have our wedding there,” they explain. The California couple celebrated not only their union, but also their favorite place and its abundance of local highlights. From the farm-sourced menu to surprise performances and welcome gifts, the event showcased the best of Tulum, letting family and friends experience Brittan and Alex’s love for the locale.

Tulum is a brilliant blend of foliage and beach.

What’s the first thing the couple does when they arrive to Tulum? “Eat tacos, then walk on the beach.” And their favorite snacks include “tacos, iced coffees, street cart marquesitas (a thin wafer dessert) when we want something sweet.” BRING WITH Brittan and Alex suggest packing “swimsuits and coverups, casual sandals, sunglasses, mosquito spray, sunscreen and a hat and a portable charger.” They also have a list of recommendations for what to buy in Tulum. The list includes woven bags, huaraches and boho-style beach clothing. They also love to purchase local honey. Brittan used the help of a designer to achieve her day-dream day.

All the vendors were local.

Special touches make weddings personal. They are an extension of the couple, their interests and the destination. Brittan and Alex shared many local details with their guests. “We had mariachis play at the close of the ceremony. They are not traditional to Tulum, but are traditional to Mexico, especially Guadalajara, where Alex’s family is from,” explains Brittan. “Alex arranged for a local mezcal expert to come give a tasting to his groomsmen before the wedding and I visited Coqui Coqui at Coba the week before the wedding and purchased small bottles of their signature scents to give as gifts to my bridesmaids,” she adds. All guests enjoyed a surprise performance from local Mayan dancers during the reception. And the couple’s favorite local band, La Bombonera, played at the welcome dinner. ➺ 71

The top five draws to the area are “the beaches, cenotes (limestone caves with water), and food scene (both at the beach and downtown).” For meals, they say “the best, most affordable food is in town in Centro at Taqueria Honorio—don’t miss the cochinita pibil (slow-roasted barbeque pork), a local specialty.” Brittan and Alex also like El Asadero for steaks in a casual setting. When it comes to cenotes, they prefer Cenote Zemway or Corazon.

Brittan and Alex’s reception was a festival of local flavor. The bespoke cocktail menu featured the Bumble Burro (mezcal, chile infusion with honey and ginger beer), and the Besos de Peso (tequila with passion fruit, guanabana liquor, limon and falernum). The meal was family style and designed by the head chef at NÜ, the main eatery at La Valise. In addition to a veggie “pork belly” taco, there was a plethora of vegetarian options such as green apple ceviche and tempura oyster mushrooms. Local favorites were also included: short rib with a beer glaze and fresh-from-the-sea prawns.

Tacos were on the menu.

The requirements for saying “I do” in Mexico are quite involved. All couples must be 18 or older and not currently married. You’ll need to present a valid passport, tourist card (issued upon arrival), birth certificate, blood test results (done in Mexico), completed marriage application forms from the local registry and four witnesses. All foreign documents, with the exception of your passport, will need to be translated, apostilled and notarized. The couple, and their witnesses, must arrive in Mexico four business days before the wedding day for legal ceremonies.

RESTAURANT TIPS:

NAVIGATING THE WINE LIST Sniff, swirl and sip like a pro with these need-to-know tips. by Jenna Mahoney

“Egads, the wine list!” is the first thing that goes through my head each time I am handed the book of beverages at a restaurant. Since I refuse to believe I’m alone in this behavior, I got some expert help in the art of picking the best bottle for your romantic honeymoon dinner. Cheers!

ASK THE EXPERT Ask your server or sommelier what has her most excited on the menu, and let her know what your preferred tastes are. Red and fruity? Or something more crisp and dry? Based on that and your dinner selection, the sommelier should be able to suggest a wine to complement your meal. Also, ask her why the pairing is recommended.

GO FOR PRICE There’s no need to feel compelled to buy the most expensive bottle. Choose a price point and don’t be ashamed to stick with it. “The least expensive wine is not always the worst,” says Rajat Parr, a vintner and master sommelier. “There is a reason it is on the list—it may be a great value.”

TAKE A SIP Once you’ve selected your wine, your server will open the bottle tableside and offer you a small pour to try. While handling the glass, hold it by the stem, as your hand temperature may affect the overall taste. Check for any cork or lingering sediment, which may indicate the wine isn’t at its prime.

GIVE SOME FEEDBACK Upon trying your wine, tell the sommelier what you like about it—or don’t like. Instead of saying, “It doesn’t taste as I expected,” try: “It has a bitter edge” or “I like the buttery flavor.” If your glass of wine tastes like wet cardboard, say so immediately. This means the wine may be corked (or tainted). Note: It does not mean that bits of cork are in the glass. Technically, a corked bottle is the only one you should send back, but Parr assured me that you can refuse any wine—for the right reasons. “Of course, if you’re clear in your descriptions in the first place, you shouldn’t have any problems.” 

hen Pooja Reddy and Zachary Spector decided to get married, they also agreed to blend the Hindu and Jewish traditions of their families. And a weekend-long celebration in the city of brotherly love proved to be the best locale: “We had guests coming from all over the country and there would be multiple events,” they explain. “We wanted a destination that was convenient to get to, but had a lot of venues and activities to meet the vibe of each event.” The couple hosted their happilyever-after at a variety of Philadelphia spots including The Logan hotel, a sleek urban retreat near Rittenhouse Square. “We loved the warmth of the lobby, the library, fireplace, and views of the terrace and beyond. But the planning staff and food menu they offered really sealed the deal.”

The couple bookended their wedding weekend at The Logan.

While the parties, food and ceremonies clearly combined the couple’s family and cultural traditions, the florals were also a symbol of Pooja and Zach’s union. “Hindu ceremonies are conducted under a mandap, which is a four-post structure that is usually covered,” explains the couple. Jewish wedding ceremonies are conducted under a chuppah, a four-posted canopied structure. “Our amazing florist was able to transform, transport and convert the mandap into a chuppah, which was really special for us.”

Cheers to Paris. PARIS IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA. WITH ITS ICONIC buildings, Belle Epoque architecture, peerless cultural offerings, photogenic parks, exquisite cuisine and je ne sais quois of romance, the City of Light is the ultimate happily ever after destination. While some of the world’s most recognizable sites certainly beckon to honeymooners, new offerings, amenities and hotels flaunt modern details and chic sensibilities. One that showcases a fashion-forward ethos is the Too Hotel. Located in the emerging 13th arrondissement, the 139-room hotel is housed in the city’s third highest structure—one of a pair of gleaming skyscrapers designed by Pritzker-winning architect Jean Nouvel. The interiors, which were exclusively crafted by Philippe Starck, are equally impressive with sleek lines, sumptuous furnishings, and sweeping views of the city, the Seine and the ultimate Parisian site—the Eiffel Tower. Book into a junior suite and marvel at the renowned Unwind after a day icon with a bottle of bubbly while soaking in of touring. bubbles in an oversized tub with an unbeatable view. The hotel also flaunts the city’s highest skybar— it’s most spectacular at dusk when the Eiffel Tower shimmers with light in the distance. The restaurant, showcasing a contemporary Asian-infused menu, is as noteworthy for its cuisine as its panoramic vistas. An ultra-pampering spa rounds out the amenities (room rates start at about $230 a night and include breakfast; toohotel.com). —Jenna Mahoney 88 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Jan/Feb 2024
