etiquette ADVICE
wedding Straight talk, smart solutions by Mary Clarke, Editor in Chief
Q
My son just got engaged, and his partner’s family (whom we’ve never met) lives across the country. What’s the proper next step?
A
Traditionally, the groom’s mom phones the bride’s parents to relay best wishes and extend an invitation to meet. Considering the distance between the two families, you’ll likely try to plan a get-together at a later time. Either way, they will appreciate your call. WINE O’CLOCK?
Q
My fiancé and I are planning to invite about 60 guests to our wedding. Some of our friends and family will be coming from out of town. Is it OK to have a cocktail and dessert reception? Or should we provide a full meal?
A
It’s perfectly fine to have a cocktailhour party reception: It’s fun, elegant and an affordable alternative to the traditional sit-down dinner. Don’t worry about not having enough food to feed your guests. We’ve been to many weddings where the cocktail-hour fare was fantastic. It’s all about offering delicious, abundant food. Consider stations as well as having passed hors d’oeuvres. Think pasta bar, or a Tuscan table laden with Italian breads along with an array of cheeses and olives. Offer crowdpleasing comfort foods like mac ‘n’ cheese, fries with a variety of toppings, sliders and mini grilled cheese sandwiches along with shot glasses of soup. If your budget allows, you can have a sushi station, carving station or seafood bar. Speak with your caterer about food options and be sure to indicate on your invitation that the event is for 12 BRIDALGUIDE.COM July/August 2023
cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and dessert so your guests won’t be expecting a full-course sit-down dinner. DOUBLE DUTY
Q
I’m having a matron of honor and a maid of honor. Which one should be paired with the best man for the recessional and first dance?
A
For the recessional, the maid and matron of honor can walk down the aisle together or the best man can escort both women, one on each arm. There’s no hard and fast rule about the first dance— you can have the maid of honor dance with the best man while the matron of honor dances with a groomsman or vice versa. It’s up to you and your fiancé to decide what you’d like to do. THE EX FACTOR
Q
Is it acceptable to invite my exspouse and our little girl to my wedding? My fiancé has a good relationship with my ex but I’m not sure if this would be appropriate.
A
As a rule, it’s recommended that exspouses not be invited to weddings, even if you have an amicable relationship. Your little girl may be confused by her mother’s presence at your nuptials. Guests, too, might feel a bit uncomfortable around your ex—and now the focus would be on her instead of on you and your new partner. Also, your ex might find it emotionally difficult to witness your re-marriage, no matter how well she and your fiancé get along. If you still feel strongly about extending an invitation to your ex, make sure your
future spouse is absolutely fine with it. If they indicate even the slightest bit of hesitation or doubt then just have your daughter attend the wedding. GIVE THANKS
Q
Is it necessary to write thank-you notes to all of my vendors after the wedding?
A
It’s not necessary, but if you think that the service provided was exceptional then definitely send a handwritten note (your stationer will love it!). Like most of us, wedding vendors value recognition for a job well done and they will like having your thank-you note on hand as a testimonial for their future customers. You should also post a favorable review on each vendor’s website citing how much you enjoyed working with them, and what they did to make your day extra-special. Include their hashtags on your other social media posts as well, and consider writing a positive review online. Most vendors take great pride in their work and strive to give their couples an unforgettable day. Your post-wedding thankyous will be greatly appreciated. ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. And send your planning questions to us at mail@bridalguide.com.

Love in Bloom
Between now and your wedding day, you’ll make a billion decisions. Okay, maybe a little less but the point is, there are so many things that go into planning your dream celebration. Choosing your flowers is one of the most important. They can transform everything. Will you choose minimal shades of white? Will you go all in for color? How will you decide? This issue’s florist, ELAN FLOWERS is here to help. “Flowers provide a sense of energy, life, and beauty. They’re a fun vehicle to showcase you and your partner’s personalities. The flower colors are truly up to the bride and should not be based on what’s trendy! Pick flowers that make you happy so your floral designer can build a color palette. Always provide a photo of your dress so that the colors and style of the flowers compliment it.” - Yuko Hasegawa, Lead Designer, ELAN.

Wedding Dress Shopping

CONGRATS, YOU’RE ENGAGED! You’ve probably been dreaming of this day for a long time — with good reason! There’s no greater feeling than trying on a wedding gown and seeing yourself as a bride for the very first time. Read on for everything you need to know about shopping for your wedding dress.
Choose Your Stores
Brides should begin shopping for their gowns 10-14 months ahead of their big day. Look up your favorite designers online to see which stores near you carry their dresses. A traditional bridal salon offers a large selection of reputable designers and styles, whereas a designer’s store or showroom is dedicated to their specific brand.
Bring These Important Items
It’s a good idea to bring a strapless bra and a pair of shoes with the heel height you’d like to wear on your big day.
Communicate With Your Consultant A bridal consultant cannot read your mind, so be vocal about what you’re
looking for, give honest opinions, and tell her if you love a dress or not. You’ll be making both of your jobs easier. Not sure? Bring trusted family and friends—your “YES” moment will be that much sweeter!
Make the Dress Your Own
The dress you try on in the store is just a starting point. Want to add a sleeve? Lower the back? Elongate the train? At a traditional bridal salon, you can work directly with the dress designer and an in-house seamstress to customize your gown and turn your dream into a reality.
Ask About Special Pricing
If budget is a concern, there are many ways to shop smart at a local salon. Many brick-and-mortar stores offer
discounts at designer trunk shows, and host sample sales annually.
Inquire About Delivery Dates
Don’t forget to ask your consultant about delivery dates. Due to supply chain issues, your dress may take longer to arrive. Short on time? Many bridal salons have off-the-rack sections where you can select a gorgeous gown and bring it home the same day.
Add on Accessories
Once you say yes to the dress, your consultant will help style your look with accessories like veils, headpieces, jewelry and belts. This is an important step as it helps you envision how you’ll look on your wedding day!

Lab grown diamonds and gemstones are a force of nature, just not in the traditional sense. Instead of mining the earth for these glittering beauties, brands are utilizing technologies that literally create diamond dupes out of thin air. With both chemical and physical properties that make them 100% identical to their mine-born cousins, lab grown gemstones are turning the fine jewelry industry upside down. This new, environmentally friendly category offers consumers the choice to invest in more substantial pieces, as the cost of lab grown is considerably lower, with little to no impact on the planet. And while you might skimp on budget, you don’t have to skimp on style. Jewelry designers are letting their creative juices flow with pieces that range from traditional, modern, antique-inspired, and organic. The choice is yours, naturally.

PLANNING
Weddings and celebrations expert David Tutera deconstructs the details.
PROS & CONS
Let the wedding planning begin! This should be one of the most enjoyable and creative processes you will ever experience. But many couples tell me they get so overwhelmed they feel as if they’ve taken on a second job they’ve had no training for. As for me, I started at 14, learning the craft of floral design while working at my grandfather’s flower shop. That’s where my journey began. I truly believe I was born to create parties. Here, some of the planning aspects I love most—and least. Get the more difficult wedding elements under control and the rest should fall into place.
THE PROS (what I ❤) • SETTING THE VISION Getting a chance to dive in and understand what a couple is all about is the allimportant first step to a beautiful event. My television work makes it seem as though a super-specific wedding theme is mandatory, but please trust me when I say it is not. However, I do love when a couple knows the types of looks, colors, feelings and moods they want for their wedding. Ask: What are your favorite colors, historic eras, flowers, seasons? The answers will help you better envision the overall look of your wedding.
• FLOWERS AND DECOR I love meeting with vendors in all areas from invitations to flowers, colors and lighting. Whether talking decor and details with my brides or designing my
own collection, Dreams Delivered by David Tutera, I always envision the overall celebration. Flowers are forever key: A bride without a bouquet or a table without a centerpiece isn’t, to me, a wedding. Soft colors, bold colors or combinations thereof create an overall style or even evoke a period in time. These visual components can be the most pleasurable parts of planning.
• FOOD AND DRINK It’s great to use food to tell the story of your culture and background—this is something I always explore with my couples. Do take care, however, not to get on the full-on foodie bandwagon when planning your wedding, incorporating too many exotic ingredients that may make your guests uncomfortable. When it comes to beverages, specialty drinks have been a
major trend but I am now loving specialty bars, such as whiskey, champagne and/or wine bars. Any of these options can make your wedding more unique.
• THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE I love the chance to make special moments happen: perhaps a dance that no one knew about or changing up the timeline in a new way. I always say that something different should happen every 30 minutes. This allows guests to become interactive participants vs. inactive participants following the same old routine (ceremony to cocktails to dinner) and results in something special. This is what I will always love about doing weddings.
THE CONS (what I don’t ❤) • WHO’S INVITED?
PHOTOGRAPHY: MEL BARLOW & CO.
Determining the guest list can be a tough task, as can deciding on seating arrangements: who should sit next to whom. Once this gets set, the sailing becomes much smoother, I promise!
• DETAILS, DETAILS Picking the perfect songs for your processional, recessional, first dance and all of your important formalities (e.g. toasts) can be challenging, since these elements require a final, set-in-stone decision—you want to make sure everything is exactly as
you want it. These all-important nitty-gritty details can be a chore, but they are essential to get right.
• TOO MANY COOKS You do not want a committee of opinions. Pick a few supportive friends and family members (three at the most) and trust in them to guide you and support you. The key word is support.
• TRAVEL LOGISTICS Coordinating travel details for all your wedding guests can be mind-numbing, not to mention time-consuming. Instead of being
the point person for travel questions, I suggest finding a good travel agent ahead of time (especially if you’re having a destination wedding!) who can handle these issues. It will be worth it if it means having time you would otherwise lose to focus on the other important details of your day.
• OVERSHARING (especially on social media) One of my ground rules: Don’t forget that some parts of your wedding should be a surprise for your guests, so don’t spill too many details ahead of time!

Planners We L ve Take inspiration from these creative forces as we continue our series spotlighting the best in the business. by Carol Straley GOLD LEAF EVENT DESIGN & PRODUCTION,
Owner, Kate Ryan
Majestic mountaintops with breathtaking views. Spectacular sun-drenched beaches from Hawaii to Miami and beyond. Lush botanical gardens. These are just a few of the gorgeous locations where Gold Leaf Event Design & Production works its magic. Renowned for luxury destination events animated by innovative design, the company was born in 2013 in Aspen, CO. That’s where the firm’s Michigan-born and raised owner Kate Ryan landed after college, ready to take inspiration from her far-flung travels and love of event planning to find her destiny. After a successful stint as an event coordinator, Kate had the expertise and vision to launch Gold Leaf Event Design & Production, with full service wedding planning and coordination among its offerings. And as success begets success, when the bright lights and scenic streets of the Big Apple beckoned, Kate opened a second office in New York City in 2017. In addition to creating memorable stateside celebrations, Kate and her team also travel the globe, trekking from Australia to Mexico to stunning European destinations— always going the extra mile to create show-stopping, highly personalized experiences for couples who want to say, “I do” in idyllic—and Insta-worthy—surroundings.

• “Weddings give us the opportunity to be consistently working on something new.” • “Clients are all different, and we love learning about their relationship journey. They inspire us to create an event reflecting who they are as a couple, where they’ve been and where they’re going.”
Meet Our Couples
• “Our clients come to us to create a beautiful and unique experience that tells their story.” • “We are praised by our clients for our ability to listen and put their priorities first. The initial steps of our planning process includes educating our team on each individual client’s likes and dislikes, discovering what their style is as a couple and adjusting the process for working together to guarantee it best fits their needs.” 30 BRIDALGUIDE.COM July/Aug 2023

Most Memorable Moments
• “When the couple is brought into the reception space prior to guest entry. Their emotion and gratitude can be overwhelming; it’s such a special moment.”
Words of Wisdom for Our Couples
• “We understand there is a learning curve when embarking on the planning process—it’s why we’re here! Being knowledgeable of the impact guest count has on the entirety of the event is helpful information for everyone to have from the beginning of the planning process.” • “We limit the number of weddings we take on per year to eight. This allows us to truly dedicate ourselves to each one.”

What Makes the Perfect Wedding Weekend
• “Being that we cater primarily to destination weddings and events, we find the weekend feels the most complete when there is a welcome reception, followed by the wedding itself and a farewell of some sort.” • “There are different ways we can build out each event, but having all three makes the weekend feel well rounded.”
Wedding Evolution
• “Post-pandemic we found couples were nervous to invite larger numbers in the event we were required to limit the count due to potential COVID restrictions being put back in place. But now we’re seeing much longer guest lists. Our average guest count for destination weddings is 120-180. And weekend weddings are still going strong.” •“We’ve seen a return to destination weddings, with Mexico at the top of the list.”
My Favorite Wedding Tradition
• “Writing your own vows. I love those special and unique moments.”

Our Signature Style
• “I would describe my wedding style as classic, handsome, moody, and lush.” • “A tented Charleston wedding I produced for a wonderfully chic couple is a favorite of mine. The well-composed design included unique lighting, custom linens, antique silver flatware, and curated fine china. Bonus: a gorgeous, welldressed bride and groom!” • “I also love bringing outdoor elements in and find that incorporating lush seasonal greenery adds just the right amount of drama and scale to an event space. For a recent tented winter wedding in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, we filled oversized clay and metal urns with magnolia branches and paperwhites, and layered magnolia leaf garlands to add texture.”

Your Weekend Wedding Planner
OUR ULTIMATE GUIDE TO PUTTING TOGETHER
AN UNFORGETTABLE MULTI-DAY AFFAIR. BY LYNNE KENDALL LAWSON
34 BRIDALGUIDE.COM July/Aug 2023
TYPICAL WEEKEND TIMELINE FRIDAY Daytime events for early-arriving guests might include a ladies’ lunch and a guys’ outing to a driving range. If you have wedding planning tasks to handle on this day, arrange for a member of your wedding party to host these events. Rehearsal dinner/welcome buffet: Depending on your budget and number of guests, the rehearsal dinner can include just your bridal party, officiant and immediate family members or you can open it up to your out-of-town guests as well. If you hold a more exclusive dinner, be sure to provide your out-of–town guests with a welcome cocktail party/buffet, generally held at the hotel.
SATURDAY Before the wedding: a buffet breakfast for your bridal party. After the wedding: a fun after-party. You might all gather at the hotel lounge, or take your friends out on the town while parents host their own friends elsewhere. (Added bonus: Your hotel might allow you free use of their shuttle to take your group to the destination.)
SUNDAY The morning-after brunch or breakfast. And if some guests don’t need to depart right away, you might plan an early afternoon outing like a local souvenir shopping trip.

Whether held in your hometown or a far-flung locale, wedding weekends give you and your guests more quality time to bond and celebrate than the standard one-day affair. You might not have seen some of your guests for years and other family and friends often, but perhaps not often enough. From the welcome party to farewell brunch, a wedding weekend gives you ample opportunities to entertain all of your loved ones with fun, memory-making, personalized events and details.
WHAT WE ❤ ABOUT WEDDING WEEKENDS ❤ A multiday wedding is more affordable than you might think: Not every meal has to be a formal sit-down, and some events (the rehearsal dinner, for example) may be hosted by parents, which makes them free to you. ❤ Guests get more value out of their travel and lodging expenses when there’s more for them to enjoy. ❤ There are plenty of photo ops with your guests. ❤ You get hours of opportunities to infuse family and cultural traditions into your celebration.

guests love, and most vineyard area hotels will likely have fabulous wine-pairing catering options, plus fabulous views for outdoor celebrations. Activities abound: Wine country towns often host festivals, and there are plenty of quaint shops to visit plus notable chef-owned eateries.
MENU IDEAS Chef Gustavo Rios, executive chef of Solage Calistoga resort in California, suggests “sweet cherry tomatoes stuffed with fresh ricotta and fino verde basil, petite legumes à la nicoise with marjoram and tempura of baby fava beans with Meyer lemon mayonnaise.” Charcuterie and cheese platters, and locally grown menu items complete the tasty fare. “A party in the vineyard’s tasting room is a great way to get the weekend off to a fun and energetic start,” says Kim Pennel-Conte, director of catering and conference services at CordeValle, A Rosewood Resort in San Martin, California. “At CordeValle, we like to do the welcome party cocktail-style and serve wines from the vineyard with lots of passed hors d’oeuvres that showcase fresh California ingreWELCOME BASKET IDEAS dients. To get people • Bottle stoppers talking to one another, • Wine journal our winemakers mingle • Coasters with the crowd and • Cheese knife and cheese share tasting notes and ID flag sets stories about the wines • Bottles of wine or champagne • Mini summer sausage trios and the winemaking process.”
WEEKEND PLANNING ESSENTIALS • SAVE THE DATES should be sent out 6-8 months before the big day, and can be sent up to a year in advance for destination weddings. This will give guests plenty of time to plan for any necessary travel and assist in securing competitive rates, say the etiquette experts at The Wedding Shop by Shutterfly. Details can be confirmed and shared with guests closer to the event or updated through your wedding website. • MAKE IT CLEAR when guests will be expected to pay for their own expenses. The best way to do this is through your invitation or wedding website wording. For instance: “On Friday evening, we’ll head out to a country bar for drinks and dancing. See the menu, drinks list and pricing at (website).” When guests see the word “pricing” mentioned, they’ll know to bring their wallets. When guests see that an event is hosted by you or someone in the wedding party, the message conveys that the hosts are paying. • SHARE DRESS CODES for each event on your wedding website, so that guests will know what to pack. • SEND GUESTS A WEEKEND ITINERARY in advance of the big day, whether print or a link to your wedding website. If a new event is planned just a few weeks before the wedding, send guests your itinerary page link with a message of “New Party Added!” or “Even More to Look Forward To!” • PRINT OUT COPIES OF YOUR ITINERARY and add one to each welcome basket, so guests have the schedule and details easily on hand. ➺
Surprise guests with a different treat in their hotel room each night, such as fresh-baked oatmeal cookies or chocolate candy. 35
❤ Think Cape Cod, Mystic, Newport… those breezy, quaint towns by the shore often hold sweet family memories of sand, salt and sun-filled vacations, sailing and watching sunsets over the ocean. If you’re hosting an intimate wedding, you might consider having guests stay together in a rented beach house or a more traditional bed and breakfast. Beyond the typical water-centric activites such as sailing, water-skiing and paddleboarding, landlubbers can partake in the likes of beach walks, antiquing and museum visits.
Provide transportation for guests who don’t have cars. Enlist volunteer drivers and make full use of your hotel’s free shuttle service.
MENU IDEAS Serve lobsters, clams (quintessential clambake fare), or raise the gourmet level with Chef Rios’s suggestions of “barbecued oysters, and mini crab rolls with avocado green goddess and salt-andvinegar chips.” Shots of clam chowder or lobster bisque warm up a cool evening, as does sitting around a bonfire on the beach or a fire pit on a restaurant or hotel terrace.
Winter Resort
❤ Spectacular scenery and winter sports add beauty and adventure to your wedding weekend events. Beyond drinks at the lodge, there’s skiing, horseback riding in the snow, hot-tubbing, snowmobiling and the resort’s spa to enjoy.
MENU IDEAS Go full-on gourmet with confit lamb shoulder with caramelized fuji apples, cheesy spaetzle with poached eggs and black truffles, doughnuts with cinnamon-cardamom sugar, and pistachio ice cream affogato (topped with espresso). Add in soup shots and hot spiked toddies for a tasty winter-themed menu. Kristin Polhemus, owner and creative director at Reveriemade in Princeton, New Jersey, says, “For dessert, I love a hot chocolate drinking station. Guests can choose classic hot chocolate, or they can add fun elements like peppermint, cinnamon or chipotle.” TIMING IS EVERYTHING • SPACE OUT ACTIVITIES so your guests don’t feel drained by racing from one event to the next and will have time to get back to the hotel, shower and change into the next event’s appropriate attire. • ALLOW FOR ENOUGH DOWNTIME so that guests can make plans amongst themselves, relax by the hotel pool, explore the area or enjoy some alone time. • PLAN SHORTER EVENTS, not an all-day hike or endless touring excursion.

Camping or "Glamping" ❤ Weddings held at breezy rustic sites— some truly camplike, most more luxe interpretations—are becoming popular, whether you or your fiancé were once happy campers or simply love the casual outdoorsy vibe of carefree summer days gone by. “Glamping” adds in glam decor elements like lighting effects, crystals and chandeliers hung from trees, and lush fabric drapings in tents. Guests can join you in kayak races or on nature hikes and horseback trail rides.
MENU IDEAS How about adding homemade gourmet marshmallows to s’mores fixings, and a “hobo” dinner of beef short ribs, yellow finn potatoes, and cipollini onions cooked in the coals. Hotdogs, hamburgers, pulled-pork sandwiches, cornbread, popcorn and classic ice cream sandwiches evoke fun camp memories.
WELCOME BASKET IDEAS • “Care packages” with mini pampering items, packaged snacks and a pair of socks for a take on what parents would send to kids at camp • Mosquito repellent • Citronella travel candle tin • Playing cards • Bandannas • Blackberry jam, paying tribute to berry-picking memories at camp

Dude Ranch
Take your guests’ accessibility needs into consideration. If Grandma uses a walker, or if one of your ’maids will be far along in her pregnancy, a challenging hike might not be the best idea.
❤ Head out to the ranch for westernflair activities like horseback riding, roping lessons, archery, fly fishing and campfire cookouts in breathtaking natural WELCOME BASKET IDEAS scenery.
MENU IDEAS
• Packets of barbecue rub • Ranch logo drink bottles or cozies • Beer bottle openers • “Little bottles of whiskey,” says Fowler • Sheriff badges or toy horses for kids
Chef Rios suggests “bison sliders, empanadas and churros,” and prime rib, southern-fried chicken, roasted pork, sliders and breakfast burritos with slow-cooked beans and cornbread for authentic western flavor. Again, s’mores by the campfire are always a hit with guests. Lottie Fowler, event planner at Fort Worth, Texasbased Grit and Gold Event Co., adds, “For an after-wedding breakfast, we serve southern Texas toast, biscuits with chocolate on top and muffins.”

BG: How do entertainment and dancing factor in? AS: “It’s important to know what kind of music you envision before you book. For example, if you’re planning to hire a band, keep in mind musicians take up more room on the dance floor than a DJ. Knowing the electrical capabilities of the restaurant will also let you determine any limitations, which all bands and DJs will need to know before agreeing to sign a contract. And be sure to ask about any noise restrictions.”
BG: How is the wedding menu determined? AS: “Whatever an eatery offers on a
&
BE MARRIED A restaurant wedding offers much more than great food. Here’s what else is on the menu.
Bridal Guide: Why consider a restaurant wedding? “The food, of course,” says Avi Szapiro, a New Haven, CT based entrepreneur and executive chef. “It’s a major draw, especially for foodie couples. Think about it; you can make multiple visits to get a feel for the place and service, along with the all-important cuisine itself. A traditional wedding venue or catering hall will provide a tasting, but at that point you’re already committed and have paid a deposit. And the wedding planning itself is simplified. A restaurant already has everything you need: glassware, tables, chairs, linen, etc.”
BG: Where should couples start? “The type and style of cuisine offered should be top priority. And it’s important to know if the space will accommodate the number of guests expected, as this will quickly determine if the restaurant is a good fit for your wedding.”
BG: Let’s talk overall decor. AS: “One of the biggest advantages to a restaurant wedding is that there is very little to rent. There are any number of restaurants that feature carefully selected 38 BRIDALGUIDE.COM July/Aug 2023
furniture and fixtures that support the surroundings. Think: soaring ceilings, original woodwork and tile, or something cozier that oozes charm. When you get to start with a room or outdoor space that is already beautiful, not much needs to be done to bring the surroundings to life.”
BG: How are restaurant weddings coordinated? AS: “Many restaurants have a dedicated point person, often the restaurant manager or catering manager, to ensure no key details are missed. If the restaurant doesn’t have someone on site to handle the numerous logistical pieces of the day, consider an outside coordinator to keep the wheels running smoothly.”
BG: What’s involved in a buyout? AS: “Restaurants may offer both full and partial buyouts, a full buyout being a complete takeover of the entire space. Partial buyouts can be arranged with venues that have separate areas that can accommodate smaller celebrations. Many venues can offer a separate room, or upper or lower levels as a partial buyout for weddings based on the number of guests.”
BG: What about dessert? AS: “Some restaurants include a plated dessert in their package, others include a wedding cake. You may have the option to bring cake from an outside bakery, in which case many restaurants will charge a cakecutting fee. You’ll find eateries that also create marvelous dessert bars, which really keep the energy going. Guests don’t have to be seated, they can help themselves to a bite-sized dessert or mini pot de crème to enjoy while mingling with friends, and then get back on the dance floor.”
BG: What else should couples keep in mind as they search? AS: “Your regular eateries may not work for a wedding, so get out and explore. You may find a hidden gem. Once you find ‘the one,’ try it out a few times. You’re looking for a combination of elements: the food, the service, the look and feel of the space itself. Consider, too, the return-visit factor, which isn’t possible with traditional venues like catering halls. So many couples come back for date nights, for a drink at the bar, their anniversary or eventually with their kids. Each visit rekindles joy. Now that’s an added value worth celebrating!”

regular basis is what they will do best. Top restaurants take great care in designing menus for couples that highlight peak-season ingredients. Since couples are often regular diners, they should start with what they love to eat during the season in which the wedding will be held. Once options have been discussed, the catering manager will invite the couple (and sometimes guests) for a tasting that includes wine pairing as well.”

Splurge vs. Save REAL BRIDES REVISIT THEIR WEDDING COSTS AND REVEAL WHAT WAS— AND WASN’T—TOTALLY WORTH IT by Elena Donovan Mauer
Unless you’re a Kardashian, you’re probably a bride on a budget. And keeping costs manageable will mean deciding what’s most important to you every time another wedding decision is thrown your way (six- or eight-piece band? filet or barbecue chicken? invitations embellished with Swarovski crystals or a simple but elegant design?). Here, some recent brides share what—with 20/20 hindsight—they did right and what they did wrong.
DAY-AFTER PARTY, CHARITABLE DONATIONS, TRANSPORTATION FOR TIPSY GUESTS—THE BRIDES HERE CALLED IT RIGHT FOR THESE EXPENSES. “I’m so glad I paid extra to get my makeup done professionally. I loved how I looked in my wedding photos—so much better than if I’d done my ‘usual’ makeup.” —Stephanie, Durham, NC “We set up a wine tasting for our guests at the reception, and had food stations instead of a sit-down dinner. They cost more, but I liked having something different for our guests to enjoy. They seemed to appreciate it—we got rave reviews for both.” —Meghan, Philadelphia, PA “We hired an excellent videographer who was able to really capture the day for us. We can now relive our memories any time. My kids love watching the video too!” —Kate, Boston, MA 46 BRIDALGUIDE.COM July/Aug 2023

“Instead of buying favors, we made a donation to the American Heart Association in honor of my husband’s father who died from a heart attack five years ago. No one seemed to care that there weren’t any favors, and I can’t think of a better way to spend money than to donate to a good cause.” —Beth, Pittsburgh, PA “We spent a lot of money on a talented photographer. A friend of mine did that, and they were a big hit.” —Meg, Wilmington, DE “Make sure that you and your DJ are on the same page. We went over our playlist with him, but he still ignored most of what we wanted and played stuff we didn’t really like. If I had to do it over again, I’d just program my iPhone and get some speakers.”— Jennifer, Short Hills, NJ “I wish I’d spent less on flowers. All I really wanted was an eclectic mix of herbs and greenery, because that’s more my style, but I got talked up by the florist!” —Melissa, Brooklyn, NY “I had baskets of toiletry items placed in the bathrooms for guests, but no one used any of the stuff. Of course I wanted it to be beautiful and something I felt good in, but I really couldn’t see spending over $1,000 on something I’d wear once. I found a dress at a chain retailer that I loved for $500 and was very happy with it.” —Erika, Jackson Heights, NY “I was so nervous about not having enough food that I went completely overboard on the cocktail hour with too many stations featuring heavy food, like sliced roast beef and sushi. INTO THE WOODS
Carly and Oliver envisioned an enchanted forest as the setting for their late-summer wedding in Northern California. PHOTOGRAPHED BY LARISSA CLEVELAND
Carly Stein, founder of Beekeeper’s Naturals, and Oliver Kremer, co-founder of Dos Toros Taqueria, found themselves matched on Hinge. After some “relentless pursuing” on Oliver’s part, they finally met up for their first date at Caffe Dante, in New York City’s Greenwich Village. Two months into dating, they were thrown into quarantine in a cabin in the wilderness of Ontario, Canada. From there, the nomadic couple was on the move, from California to New York and back again. Along the way, Oliver proposed to Carly on the peak of Waihe’e Ridge on Maui. Carly said yes, and the wedding planning was set in motion. Carly and Oliver’s first look. 62 BRIDALGUIDE.COM July/August 2023
Talented friends and family contributed. Oliver’s mother, an artist, created a custom Ketubah, a traditional Jewish marriage contract. Carly’s friend Jessica Winterstern Attard led the guests through a heart-centering practice before serving as officiant for the ceremony itself. Carly runs an environmentally conscious company, so being surrounded by nature felt very in line with her ethos. The couple wrote notes to each other to be read the morning of the wedding. They slept in separate places the night before, reuniting the next day for their first look. The reception palette of black, white and fresh greens.

The stunning candlelit reception setting came together via Revel Floral and Dream a LIttle Dream Events. Later, tables were cleared away for dancing (Guests were asked to submit a song request with their RSVPs.) The celebration continued past 5 a.m., with Oliver’s father one of the last to leave the dance floor—and everyone feeling the love.

hen Mimi Rosenberg and Nigel Crayton began looking for wedding venues, they considered traveling for a ceremony and celebration. “We always envisioned having a destination wedding, but when it came down to planning our dream day, we figured staying closer to DC was our best option, as we both were raised close by,” explains the bride. Once they discovered the Inn at Willow Grove in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, they knew they had found the perfect setting for an elegant wedding weekend. “We loved how it allowed for all aspects of the wedding to be at one location, yet spread across the grounds.”

In addition to being a picture-perfect destination to host
a wedding, Mimi and Nigel say the hotel is “great for a romantic getaway or weekend with friends.” They highlight the beauty and peacefulness of the grounds as a marquee restorative-inducing amenity. “I could easily stay at the Inn at Willow Grove all weekend enjoying the spa, pool (during warm weather), restaurant and pub, sitting in one of the lawn chairs or out on the porch of a cottage reading a book,” Mimi says. “There are also wineries/breweries and hiking trails if you want to add in some activity.”

A dreamy reception table.
A big factor in choosing the Inn at Willow Grove was not only the accessibility, but also the ability to keep guests entertained in a single location. “Once our guests arrived for their weekend away, we wanted to make sure they didn’t have to leave,” explains Mimi. And she and Nigel hosted their intimate ceremony on site “in a beautiful shaded outdoor garden area.” Although Nigel’s uncle officiated the wedding, the couple opted to swap out traditional trappings for a wedding that was authentic to them and their relationship. ➺ 83

Deep in the heart of Virginia wine country, the Inn at Willow Grove is located less than 45 minutes from Charlottesville, home to the Monticello Wine Trail. The collection of more than 30 wineries is something of an only-in-the-know type of destination even though it is considered the birthplace of American wine traditions. An advantage of hosting their wedding close to home is that Mimi and Nigel were able to visit the property at various times throughout the planning and got to know the staff at the Inn. “They are top-notch and were responsive and involved throughout the whole process.” The couple also worked with wedding planner Ida Rose Events, who facilitated all the contracts, any necessary travel needs for guests and magic moments. Among their favorite highlights of the celebration was entering the barn for their reception. “Our planner completely transformed the place to an enchanted, candlelit dining experience.
