ANSWERS
Q&A
Wedding
Straight talk, smart solutions by Mary Clarke, Editor in Chief
Q
We’re planning a tiny wedding. How do we announce our upcoming marriage to those family members who won’t be invited without upsetting them?
A
These days, there’s no reason to stress over constricted guest lists, given that mini-monies are not an unexpected occurrence in this new normal. And you don’t even have to think about sending out a formal wedding announcement until after you’re married. But in the interest of keeping feathers unruffled, you, your fiancé—and both sets of parents—should let extended family members know as soon as possible that yours will be a very small wedding. They may be disappointed, but will certainly respect your wishes and appreciate the heads up. AT-HOME WEDDING TIPS
Q
My fiancé and I would like to have a wedding at my parents’ home. They have a lovely backyard and we think it will be safer and more cost-effective. What do we need to consider?
A
There are quite a few things to take into consideration. While an at-home wedding can be lovely and unique, there are a number of details that may not prove as cost-effective as you’d like. Rental fees are required for the tables, chairs, linens, silverware and glassware, for example, and you might want a tent for shade. Depending on the weather, you may need heating lamps, fans or an air-conditioning unit. You’ll need to make sure the kitchen
is large enough to accommodate a catering staff (a concern even if you’re hosting a small celebration). There should be enough electrical power available to handle kitchen needs, entertainment and lighting, so a generator may be necessary. That said, if you research all of these factors and a wedding at your parents’ home still fits into the budget, then by all means go for it and enjoy the festivities! And be sure to read “No Place Like Home” in this issue for further inspiration and advice. SHOW ME THE MONEY
Q
We would love to buy a home soon after we marry and use any money we receive as wedding gifts for a down payment. What is the proper wording for this type of request on our invitation?
A
Wedding invitations should never include requests for gifts of any kind. The only way to let your guests know your preference for cash is by word of mouth. Friends and family members can inform invited guests that you plan on purchasing a home and would prefer a monetary gift, but they should also graciously add that any type of gift would be greatly appreciated. You can set up a cash gift registry so guests are able to make contributions online. But do not count on receiving enough money for a down payment: Couples often overestimate how much they’ll receive. More than
likely, you’ll need to save quite a bit more yourselves before reaching your goal. DIVA BRIDESMAID
Q
One of my bridesmaids just told me she does not want to take part in the “financial aspects” of being an attendant or to participate in any required planning for my 2022 wedding. What should I do?
A
Simple: Tell her that as much as you would have loved having her in the bridal party it’s probably best if she takes part in your wedding in some other way. (You can ask her to do a reading during the ceremony.) Paying for her attire and pitching in on a number of other planning aspects are all part of being a bridesmaid, and it wouldn’t be fair to your other attendants to expect them to do all the heavy lifting—not to mention the animosity that would create. My guess is she will probably be relieved. ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. And send your planning questions to us at mail@bridalguide.com.

Reasons to Shop at Your Local Bridal Salon
The YES Moment
You,ve probably been dreaming of this day for a long time—with good reason! There is no greater feeling than trying on a wedding gown and seeing yourself as a bride for the very first time. Surrounded by friends and loved ones makes the YES moment that much sweeter! Selection
Make the Dress Your Own
Bridal salons offer the largest selection of reputable designers, styles, and colors.Your consultant will work directly with the designer to ensure everything from the color, to the fabric and the fit, are exactly what you envision.
The dress you try on in the store is just a starting point. Want to add a sleeve? Lower the back? Elongate the train? At a traditional bridal salon, you can work with a seamstress to customize your gown and turn your dream into a reality.
Feel-Good Factor
Special Pricing
When you buy from a trusted, local bridal salon, you not only support your community, but also small businesses mostly owned by women!
No Surprises You get what you pay for. A designer dress may be pricier than similar versions online, but counterfeit gowns can be poorly constructed, ill-fitting, and made out of cheap fabrics, if you receive your gown at all.
If budget is a concern, there are many ways to shop smart at a local salon. Many brick-and-mortar stores offer discounts at designer trunk shows, and host sample sales annually.
So Much More Than Just the Gown Your trained consultant will take precise measurements, assist with alterations, and put you at ease throughout the entire process. The salon will even steam your gown and store it safely until your wedding day!

ADVICE When you turn off the judgment wheels and pursue something else—a walk, a book, a project at work—you open yourself to more “unconscious thinking,” a different way of processing feelings that can lead to better outcomes. For couples in the throes of wedding planning, if you’re torn about which venue to pick, go see a movie and then decide how you both feel over dinner afterward.
Focus on experiences, not things. Researchers at
Psychology professor Amy Summerville shows you how to feel good about your wedding-planning choices.

ew brides think much about science when planning a wedding, other than their chemistry with their soon-to-bespouse. As both a recent bride and a professor who directs the Miami University Regret Lab and teaches classes on decision-making, I know that research from decision and psychological science offers a number of strategies for how to feel great about your weddingplanning choices so you’ll enjoy your day to the fullest. Here, some tips.
Trying to find “the absolute best” will make you less happy. People can use two strategies in making a choice: trying to pick the supremely perfect option or trying to pick an option that meets all of their requirements and standards. Research by psychologist Dr. Barry Schwartz and colleagues has found that the latter strategy actually seems
to make people happier—after and were more likely to purall, you can never be absolutechase a jar, whereas people who ly sure that there’s not another had multiple choices were too gown, cake, venue, fill-in-theoverwhelmed to feel confident blank somewhere out there in a decision. Not sure about reading your own vows? Research suggests that having an audience tends to get our adrenaline going, which helps for things we’re really confident about. NO REGRETS
Cornell University have found that people tend to be happier with “experiential” purchases like concerts than with material purchases. We decided to budget money for a craft bartender for cocktail hour instead of upgraded linens or chairs, and had an “experiential” favor—strips from a photo booth that also served as our guest book.

year ago, this Southern California couple gave new meaning to the word “pivot.” With the Covid-19 pandemic showing no signs of retreating, the duo told wedding designer Jen Bergmark, of First Pick Planning, that their show must go on. Bye-bye plans to have 250 guests gather in Lake Tahoe over Labor Day. Hello plot-twist to host just 12 of their truly nearest and dearest in their cozy backyard on the outskirts of San Diego. “They didn’t want to wait,” says Bergmark. Bergmark asked the florist to create a hedge wall in the backyard, and then adorned it with a large, circular sign engraved with the couple’s last name. String lights crisscrossed above to give the entire space a romantic air after sunset. Guests sipped cocktails while they waited for the bride and groom to take their turns walking down the aisle to the tune of a ukulele strumming “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Vows were exchanged beneath a sleek triangle arch decked in pampas grass, and the first kiss was punctuated by the approving yelps of the couple’s two pups—wearing matching leis, just like the groom’s. After cheering the big moment, guests mingled on the patio nibbling on passed appetizers. The seated dinner ended on a sweet note—a choice of red velvet or coconut cake, plus cookies and crème brulée. The pandemic meant no dancing other than the couple’s first spin, but Bergmark says there’s plenty of time for the couple to take the party back to Tahoe with a larger assortment of friends and family this coming Labor Day weekend. “They really did make the most of a trying situation,” says Bergmark. “To see how happy they were—everyone was—you would have never guessed this was their Plan B!” ➺ clockwise from top left: Fresh grapes, figs, berries and blood oranges sit nicely in a bed of lush flowers and greenery; a modern cake; dinner was served on the patio; the happy couple and their pups; a modern ceremony arch; the menu was printed on acrylic, and laser-cut name plates doubled as favors; Parisian pink tumblers and goblets complemented the flowers.

ot every wedding that took place after March 2020 was a Plan B. Case in point: This dreamy backyard bash that took place in August. “Once engaged, the couple realized that planning a wedding in the midst of a pandemic would look different than ‘normal,’ and they just rolled with it,” says wedding designer Michelle Cousins, owner of Michelle Leo Events. First up, the venue. The home of the bride’s parents was a no-brainer. Sitting high above Provo, Utah, the house offered spectacular views of both the city and the mountainside. Next, the guest count. The couple didn’t want a huge wedding, but they also didn’t want a micro wedding. Covid-19 restrictions meant they’d need to be creative. The solution? A small number of close friends and family arrived early in the evening for the ceremony. Afterward, larger groups arrived in two sets for an open-house style reception. Guests were given an allotted time to arrive and depart based on their last names. Finally, the fun stuff. The focal point of the day was the circular ceremony arch festooned in flowers and pampas grass. Twinkling lights dotted trees as well as the climbing ivy that defined the patio. Instead of long, family-style tables that Cousins is known for, there were large round tables carefully spaced apart. “Lush centerpieces and lots of candles helped make the tables feel more intimate,” she says. “When the guest list gets trimmed, that usually leaves more budget for florals, special linens and other decor.” Even though guests had to adhere to a strict time frame, the celebration was anything but rushed. “The beauty of a home wedding is that they’re more relaxed because the couple feels comfortable,” she says. “Yes, there was a pandemic, but this was the couple’s dream wedding. Everything about it was personal and perfect.”

SAFETY FIRST • Ensure you can accommodate physical distancing, even outside. • Many locales are now requiring event permits for home celebrations, meaning you must follow the same guidelines as event spaces. • Work with vendors (especially caterers) who are familiar with current local restrictions and have plans in place. • Ask guests to quarantine for two weeks and get tested ahead of arrival. Members of the wedding party, including the couple, should do the same. Ask everyone to kindly stay home if they’re not feeling well for any reason on the day of your event. • Provide masks and plenty of hand sanitizer. Hint: These items make perfect favors. • Take steps to keep servers/staff safe during your event. Consider hiring extra staff to clean and sanitize throughout the event. • Remain understanding. Allow your guests grace and understanding if they decline your invitation.

his New England bride didn’t have to look far to find the perfect backdrop for her dream garden wedding. It was her childhood backyard. Growing up in a town outside of Boston, the bride loved the peonies that bloomed along the side of her house. When the planning began pre-pandemic, she asked her wedding designer, Sarah Crowell of Mavinhouse Events, to use the distinctive blooms as inspiration. And as luck would have it, the peonies would be at their prime during the May nuptials. But then Covid came along, and the couple had to push their plans to August. Peonies were now out of the picture.“So we went all out with roses and hydrangeas in different shades of pink and white to give her that garden feel she was looking for,” says Crowell. The guest list was whittled down from 350 to 75, but that didn’t minimize the planning and preparation. “We brought in a tent in a size we’d normally use for a larger wedding, just so we’d have room to spread out the tables,” she says. To meet new safety guidelines, there was no walk-up bar or food stations—servers walked the grounds with drinks and appetizers. Guests could also grab pre-plated selections from a raw bar. In addition to cake, the couple handed out individually wrapped sugar cookies that were painted with a picture of their puppy, who had helped the groom propose. Like the other couples mentioned, this duo had to forgo guest dancing, but Crowell says people stayed to mingle and enjoy each other’s company. “Home weddings are always special because of how deeply personal they are, but this one felt even more so because of what has been going on,” says Crowell. “It wasn’t lost on anyone there that they were surrounded by love.”

and move on to the B-list. Second, avoid putting people who know one another well on separate lists. If a B-list coworker happens to compare notes with an A-lister, for example, she’ll likely realize that she didn’t make the top tier. Ouch! best for you. You can go with a traditional religious ceremony at a house of worship, a legal ceremony at city hall or a courthouse or a spiritual ceremony in just about any location, from a tranquil garden to an elegant ballroom or private home. If you and your future husband are of different faiths, consider an ecumenical or interfaith ceremony that incorporates elements from each of your religious traditions.

AMBIENCE Close your eyes and envision your perfect wedding. Is it a bold-colored blast with a trendy fusion menu? Or perhaps a relaxed, natureinspired affair in stunning shades of green? For inspiration, collect tearsheets from wedding, home and travel magazines along with screenshots from Pinterest, Instagram and your favorite blogs. Look for a common thread—serene blues and greens, for example. Chances are these colors will create the feeling you want. ATTENDANTS The number of attendants you choose is up to you (and any current restrictions). Keep it small and ask just your closest sibling or best friend, or extend your entourage to include more pals or family members. Do note you aren’t required to have the same number of bridesmaids and groomsmen. BUDGET To get a sense of how much dough you have to work with, figure out how much you and your fiancé can realistically afford, then sit down with both sets of parents to determine what, if anything, they are able and willing to contribute. B-LIST This is just what it sounds like: a list of guests who will score invites to your wedding if any guests on your A-list decline. Here’s how to carry this off without offending anyone. First, send your A-list invites out eight to ten weeks before your event so you have enough time to get responses

DESTINATION WEDDING These weddings will again be an option as travel restrictions ease. Be sure to thoroughly research your dream destination’s marriage requirements. Some mandate that you must be in the country for a specific number of days before the wedding, for example. Another option: Skip the hassle of foreign laws, marry officially in the U.S., and then have a religious or spiritual ceremony and a reception at your destination. EMERGENCY KIT Don’t leave for the ceremony without a kit packed with essentials for tackling wedding-day mishaps like torn hems or broken heels. Some musthaves: Double-sided fabric tape, a small sewing kit, superglue, breath mints, clear nail polish and tissues. ENGAGEMENT PARTIES These are entirely optional, but they can be a fun way for the bride and groom’s family and friends to get acquainted. Any willing friend or relative can host an engagement party but if more than one is planned, the bride’s parents get the first shot if they wish to host. The party can be a traditional cocktail party, a laid-back barbecue or a buffet brunch—anything goes! ESCORT CARDS These cards, which are used to indicate each guest’s table assignment, are usually arranged on a table near the entrance to the dining room. You can get creative with these: For example, you might write names and table numbers on Christmas tree ornaments for a holiday affair; small gourds or pumpkins for a fall fête; or seashells and sand dollars for a summer soirée.

CEREMONY
She and her parents should, however, be invited to the rehearsal dinner. KIDS’ TABLE Show your youngest guests a great time by seating them at a special kids’ table designed with them in mind. Some surefire tot-friendly ideas: Put a coloring book and crayons at each place setting or provide each child with a goodie bag of small treats like stickers, mini games, crayons and cookies. LIGHTING If hiring a pro is in your budget (they can be more affordable than you might think!), they can do virtually anything from projecting your initials onto the dance floor to spotlighting centerpieces to creating a starry night effect on the ceiling. If you can’t afford a lighting designer, try this: Replace the existing light bulbs with pink- or amber-hued ones which will cast a flattering, romantic glow.

FIRST DANCE
F|
FIRST DANCE Spend a few weeks polishing your steps for your first dance. Whether you waltz, tango or swing, a little practice (or even a few lessons) can make the difference between shuffling nervously around the dance floor or wowing your guests with your smooth moves. GROOM’S CAKE A tradition that originated in the South, a groom’s cake—which can sit near the wedding cake or on a separate table at the reception—is a fun addition. Surprise your guy with a confection that suits his hobbies or interests. A baseball fan will love a bat- or hat-shaped cake, while a music lover will appreciate a sweet treat shaped like his favorite Fender Telecaster guitar. HERITAGE Looking for ways to put your personal stamp on your wedding? Consider including elements—from food to colors to music—that honor your and your fiancé’s family heritage. It’s also considerate to explain to guests the significance of your choice of rituals in the wedding program. INVITATIONS Ideally, you should start your search for the perfect invitations six to eight months before your wedding and place your order at least four months before your date. If you don’t make those deadlines, ask the printer to send the envelopes ahead of the invitations. This way, you can get a head start on the time-consuming task of addressing the envelopes. JUNIOR BRIDESMAID This role usually goes to a girl between the ages of nine and 14 years old. Your junior bridesmaid (if you decide to have one) will, of course, skip the bachelorette party and won’t be expected to chip in on the cost of a bridal shower.

MUSIC
M|
MUSIC “Band or DJ?”—that is the question. A DJ is less expensive, but some couples feel there’s nothing like live music. The most budget-friendly idea is to use your phone or laptop to play the tunes you want to hear (perfect for in between sets or at the cocktail hour). Just make sure your venue has good speakers. NEWS: SPREADING IT! Here’s one way: Contact your local newspaper—some provide forms for you to fill out, while others allow more leeway to craft your own wording. Most couples build their own website. This is a terrific way to keep your bridal party and guests up to date on the details of your event. Your website is especially helpful for keeping everyone in the loop for a destination wedding. Look online for services that allow you to create your own site for free or for a small fee. As for timing, wedding news can be publicized just as soon as you say “I do.” ➺

ESCORT CARDS
sentations are a great way to carry through your wedding color scheme. Some ideas: Ask your caterer to serve soup in shot glasses or mousse in martini glasses. Dress the trays for passed hors d’oeuvres and the buffet platters with a few large colorful blooms or tropical greens for extra flair. QUIET TIME Between formalwear fittings, cake tastings and pulling together a guest list, wedding planning can put a serious dent in your love life.
Q|
OPEN BAR
So pencil in some quiet time with your fiancé. Whether you hit a hot new restaurant, take in a movie or just share coffee and bagels over the Sunday paper, keep wedding chat to a minimum (no easy feat!) and enjoy each other’s company. RSVP Typically, 25 to 30% of guests decline a wedding invitation. But don’t count on it! If your venue holds 150 people, don’t invite 200 and assume that 50 won’t show. If you decide to enclose response cards with your invitation, they should be printed with the date to respond by, a line for guests to fill in their names and a line for them to note how many of those you’ve invited plan to attend. SAVE-THE-DATE CARDS These are a great way to give guests plenty of notice about your upcoming nuptials. They’re typically mailed out six to eight months before the wedding, but can also be sent as soon as you’ve come up with a guest list and confirmed your wedding date. THANK-YOU NOTES No, you don’t have up to a year after the wedding to send them— sorry! For engagement or shower gifts, send your notes within two to three weeks; for wedding gifts received in advance of the big day, send your thank-yous before the wedding; for gifts received at the wedding, get them done within three months; and for gifts received after the wedding, mail them out within three weeks. USHERS These guys (who often double as groomsmen) have the duty of escorting your wedding guests to their seats as they arrive for the ceremony. Appoint at least one usher for every 50 guests. VENDORS When hiring vendors, check their references, ask for samples when possible (many caterers or bakers

will do tastings, and florists will often provide a sample centerpiece) and be sure to get everything you agree on in writing. VOWS Writing them yourselves is a sweet way to personalize your ceremony. You and your fiancé should speak from the heart, but make the style of your vows similar. For example, decide whether you’ll be serious or humorous or both. WEDDING PLANNER These days, you can enlist a coordinator to orchestrate the entire event or just the big day itself, to ensure that things run smoothly. Consider hiring a planner if you have little time to devote to wedding details or if you’re planning your nuptials from a distance.

X-TRA INVITATIONS Order about 20 extra invitations and envelopes. You’ll need them for any last-minute additions to your guest list and for redoing any envelope-addressing goofs. And don’t forget to keep a few as a keepsake of the day. YOUNG ATTENDANTS To ensure your flower girls or ring bearers feel comfortable, ask their parents to rehearse their tasks—walking down the aisle, scattering flower petals or carrying the ring bearer’s pillow—with them in advance. ZERO REGRETS Grab your new husband for one final turn on the dance floor. Look around at everyone who celebrated the day with you. Now, savor the moment. Whether the weather was rainy or there were a few little snafus along the way, look back on your day with zero regrets—and look forward to starting life as a newlywed!

OPEN BAR Having an open bar is common at weddings. If you’re concerned about the cost, opt for an open bar for the cocktail hour and then switch to just beer and wine; or serve only beer and wine for the entire event. The one absolute nono: a cash bar where guests are expected to pay for their drinks. OUTDOOR WEDDING The beauty of a wedding held outdoors can be hard to top. Just be sure to have a solid back-up plan in case Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate. Ideally, you should have an alternate indoor location, but there are other options: Have large tents on hold at the party rental company in case of rain; heaters in case of cold; and fans in case you need to create a cooling breeze. PLACE CARDS At formal weddings, guests are assigned a specific seat at the table, and that’s where place cards come in. These can be as simple as a tented piece of cardstock or as whimsical as a tiny floral arrangement with each guest’s name on a container. Printed menu cards at each seat can do double duty as place cards. Just ask your printer or calligrapher to add a guest’s name to the top of each menu. PRESENTATION When it comes to your wedding fare, you obviously want it to taste terrific—but appearances do matter. Creative food pre-

Dress Shopping in CONGRATS, YOU’RE ENGAGED! You’ve probably been dreaming of this day for a long time—with good reason! There’s no greater feeling than trying on a wedding gown and seeing yourself as a bride for the very first time. While wedding gown shopping in 2021 may look a little different, the experience can still feel just as special as it would have pre-pandemic. Read on for some tips!
COVID-19 Safety
Expect to see hand sanitizer everywhere, bring fewer people to your appointment, and wear a mask! Masks will be worn by all staff in the bridal salon, and are mandatory for all brides and guests.
You Can Still Include Friends and Family While brides are limited in the number of guests they can bring with them to their appointments, friends and family can still help you choose “the one.” Bridal consultants are often happy to take photos and set up Zoom appointments so loved ones can come along for the fun.
Communicate with Your Consultant Masks quite literally mask your expressions. A bridal consultant
cannot read your mind, so be vocal about your opinions and tell her if you love a dress or not. You’ll be making both of your jobs easier!
Ask About Delivery Dates If possible, leave plenty of time to shop, and be prepared to say “YES!” if you find a gown you love. Don’t forget to ask your consultant about delivery dates. Due to the pandemic, gowns may have longer turnaround times.
Keep an Open Mind With wedding restrictions changing so frequently, brides may find themselves needing a wedding dress ASAP. Many bridal salons have off-the-rack sections where you can select a gorgeous gown and bring it home the same day.

SITE SA VVY budget tips for any location WHEN LOOKING TO CUT COSTS, ALWAYS CONSIDER YOUR VENUE. HERE’S HOW TO MANAGE EXPENSES WHEREVER YOU WED. by Elena Donovan Mauer
T
hey say location is everything—and when you’re trying to save money on your wedding, it helps to compare the choices.
At the same time, remember that your venue will set the tone for your celebration. This guide can help you decide what type of location is best for you in terms of both budget and style.
Right at home Think an at-home wedding will be cheap? Think again. Your family home has huge sentimental value, but it isn’t equipped with most things you’ll need. • Plan to save on something you may not have even considered yet: the water. “Make sure the caterer doesn’t charge you an obscene amount for bottled water,” says Christine Paul of Christine Paul Events in New York City. “Use a water filter and fill pitchers with ice and lemon or lime slices. You’ll save hundreds of dollars on water!” • Provide an affordable favor that reminds guests of home: “Pick one of Grandma’s favorite recipes and write it on note cards,” says Amy Nichols of Amy Nichols Special Events in San Francisco. And keep the entertainment simple. “Have a single musician play. By cutting out the other five band members, you cut your cost.” hung with ribbon from tree branches in the yard. Paul recommends: “Mix up different-size lanterns. As day turns to dusk, they’ll create a warm ambience for very little money.”
“Marrying at home? Bringing in a ton of rental items can add up very quickly. You also may need to pay for permits covering special events, alcohol, fire and parking.”

Beachy keen Many brides dream about marrying on the beach—what could be more romantic, with the wind in your hair and the sea in the background? It’ll be a breeze to keep costs down, right? • Check to see if you need a permit and rental fee. Avoid extra costs—and headaches—by booking a hotel that’s right on the water. “A smaller hotel might throw in the cost of renting the beach when you book your rooms,” says Nichols. “And many times, a wedding-night suite—or an entire honeymoon—is part of the wedding package at a beachfront hotel.” • Keep things casual. “Skip the formality,” Laura Weatherly of Engaging Affairs, Inc. in Alexandria, VA says. Instead of wearing an expensive beaded dress or ballgown, opt for a simple, sleek sheath and go without a veil. • “If you keep your ceremony short and sweet, you can have guests stand—and cut the cost of chair rentals.” Weatherly also suggests creating a pretty ceremony space by placing an arch in front of the water. But instead of decorating it with pricey flowers, use fabric, ribbon or keep it plain wood. “A more modern, low-key arch won’t take away from the beauty of the beach,” she says. Instead of petals, your flower girl can sprinkle seashells she gathers herself. • “Consider a cocktail reception instead of a seated meal, so guests can mingle throughout the entire event,” says Weatherly. • Serve a few signature tropical drinks instead of offering a fully stocked bar. • Keep the wedding cake small, says Nichols. “Have a fire pit set up in the sand and roast marshmallows for s’mores.”
“For beach wedding decor, go with local, tropical blooms and seashells. Small votives mixed with taller candles create ambience, and they’re cheap!” Fine wines A vineyard setting, with fine food, stunning scenery and, of course, delicious wines, creates a rich, sensory experience. The problem? A potentially high price tag. • “Keep your guest list as small as possible to ensure an intimate affair,” says Paul. The fewer the number of guests, the easier it is to keep costs low. • Nix the standard full, open bar and stick to wine (and nonalcoholic drinks). “After all, you are at a vineyard,” Paul says. “You can pair a different wine with each course. It will wow your guests, and actually save you money over a full bar.” • Save on flowers. Because a vineyard is already full of lush trees, you won’t need to go crazy with high-priced floral arrangements. “Enhance the natural beauty; don’t compete with it,” says Nichols. “Keep the floral arrangements low—tall centerpieces start at about $250 each.” • Consider a family-style meal. Set long wooden tables with bowls of food, suggests Paul. “As long as you’re serving dishes with fresh vegetables and bright colors, you’ll eliminate the need for pricey centerpieces.” • Recycle. “Wine bottles can double as table numbers and corks as escort cards. Make it a DIY project,” Paul says. ➺
“At a hotel, it’s a given that everything should be included—tables, chairs, linens and so on. The only items you should expect to pay for are food and beverage.” fee may even apply to serving cupcakes!” Politely ask to have these service charges waived. • Remember: Taxes and gratuities aren’t usually factored into your original quote either.
Top chef
Lofty ideas City brides love the blank canvas of an urban loft—there’s no ugly carpeting to cover up or gaudy chandeliers to ignore. The problem is, there’s not much else there, either. • Go for a modern look. “If you want anything besides a chic, simple wedding, a loft is not the financially savvy choice,” says Paul. “But if you want a contemporary vibe, it’s fantastic.” • Keep the space clutter-free and embellish with pops of bright, monochromatic flowers. • Decorate with non-floral objects, like DIY paper pinwheels, flowers and origami shapes, says Weatherly. Nichols recommends hanging pompoms or lanterns, and filling cylindrical vases with water and floating candles or branches. Use the city as your backdrop: In the daytime, pull the curtains open; at night, let the stars—or the skyline—be on display. • Be selective about vendors. Ask your loft manager for a list of preferred vendors who’ve worked at the site before. “It’s unusual for a loft to have an existing kitchen, so the caterer will have to create one,” says Paul. “Using a caterer who’s experienced with the space will keep your rental fees down, since they’ll know exactly what they need to cater there.” • Ask if you can purchase your own spirits for the reception. Save dough by going through a wholesaler.

Ballroom bash Weddings in hotels are ever popular because out-of-towners won’t have far to go to rest their heads—and because the hotel staff is well versed in receptions. Holding your festivities in a hotel is usually a cost-effective choice, but there are some important things to keep in mind. • Make sure everything is included in the fee. “At a hotel everything should be included—tables, chairs, linens and so on,” says Christine Paul. “The only items you should pay for are food and beverage.” • Beware of extras, says Jo Ann Woodward of Schwartz & Woodward in Houston, TX. Chair covers and upgraded linens and overlays are oh so pretty, but these add-ons can add up fast—so be sure to prioritize what’s important. • Go seasonal. “Ask the hotel staff what’s considered high season and what’s low,” says Paul. “It will differ depending on the hotel and its location, but if you book at low season, it could save you thousands of dollars.” • Negotiate—before signing a contract. Many hotels offer package deals with set prices, but if you negotiate you might get even more for your money. Ask for a complimentary weddingnight suite or a free package upgrade. “We often get the couple an extra hour of bar service, a champagne toast, suites for both parents or an upgraded menu,” says Laura Weatherly. • Seek out any hidden charges. “I’ve seen hotels charge as high as a $10 per person cake-cutting fee,” says Nichols. “The
Foodie couples may want to get hitched at their favorite restaurant. But if you’re going to “buy out” the place for a night, it will likely cost you big. What to do? • Choose the right day. “If the restaurant is always closed on Sundays, they may be willing to waive a buy-out fee and give you use of the whole restaurant if you guarantee a certain dollar amount,” says Paul. “Just as with a hotel, be sure to ask when the busy times are and avoid them.” • Decorate with small, reasonably priced items. “Opt for smaller bud vases as a centerpiece,” says Weatherly. “And use the restaurant’s votive candles.” • Have the restaurant create a special wedding menu. “The menu you put together can offer a few options,” says Weatherly. “This way you can control your price point for each guest and eliminate surprise add-ons.” • Forgo live entertainment. “Restaurants almost always have sound systems that you can use with your iPhone,” Nichols says.

ADVICE
COLOR CUES Weddings and celebrations expert David Tutera shares his secrets to creating the perfect wedding palette.
E
ver since you announced your engagement, you’ve probably been repeatedly asked this question: “What is your color scheme?” It is important, and it’s also one of the first questions I ask when I meet a bride. Color is actually an extension of you, as a bride, and the hues you choose will affect everything—from the ink and paper choices of your invitations to your bridesmaids’ dresses to your bouquets and floral centerpieces to your tablecloths, your specialty cocktails and even your favors. And oh, yes, the cake! OMG! This is a huge decision. So let’s step back a minute and think about color in everyday life. Color can create a mood and affect the energy of a space. When you paint a room in your home, the choice of color will evoke a feeling. Yellow is happy and exciting, and it makes me think of the morning sun, so I love it for a kitchen. Red is associated with passion and adventure, while blue is calming and peaceful. For some people that may be too much, but for me different colors create different experiences—and isn’t that what life is all about? So color is a very personal choice, but when I ask brides
DAVID’S RULE: COLOR CREATES THE MOOD OF YOUR WEDDING CELEBRATION AND IT WILL STRONGLY AFFECT THE ENERGY OF THE SPACE.
about their color schemes, most tell me that they want all white or shades of pink. Now these are safe, but less daring than I’d like. My advice is, add personality—your personality—by choosing a splash of color. Together, consider your favorite colors as well as your season and style. What do certain colors mean to each of you? (The pink of the peonies in your mom’s spring garden? The blue of the summer sky at the beach?) Now purchase inexpensive paints, brushes and paper and start splattering. Be a little crazy, a little Jackson Pollock! Or pick up paint chips at your local home improvement store, and play with different combinations. You might be surprised by what you both like.

SHADES OF THE SEASONS
Bold pops of pink and fuchsia add a dash of daring to a palette of warm golden hues.
I try to avoid color schemes that are too predictable. For example, a fall wedding that’s orange and brown makes me think of Halloween and pumpkins. “Harvest” colors are too clichéd; you don’t want your wedding to be too “themey.” Instead, consider taupe or burgundy with copper and a hint of lavender. Fall is perfect for being fashion forward with unique colors. SPRING: Spring colors are usually all about pastels, but change it up a bit by adding deep splashes of plum or coral. SUMMER: Go for bold yellows, purples, reds and blues. Or select different shades of a color: Coral, salmon and a deep burnt orange would be stunning. WINTER: All-white is gorgeous, but add a splash of lavender for warmth. Or go for a metallic, like pewter, silver, copper, bronze or gold, for depth and richness. Your wedding is a blank canvas just waiting for you to paint it in your special colors. Have fun creating a masterpiece!

t wasn’t difficult for Erin to envision the couple’s October 2019 wedding. As an invitation artist, “For years, I helped other brides create what they wanted for their big day.” Now it was her turn. Erin began with color, as seen in her palette of dusty blues and sage green. Pops of maroon were a nod to the surrounding fall foliage—as well as to the groom’s favorite hue. “Matt surprised everyone with his maroon tux,” she says. “The bride gets to stand out, why not the groom?” While many details were DIY’d, “We made sure to hire a videographer. Everyone said the day would go by so fast.” The couple is grateful for the advice: “We watched our wedding on our first anniversary.”

Befitting its royal moniker, this stately hotel stands regally on the shores of Upper Waterton Lake in Alberta, Canada. The 86-room hideaway, named in honor of Prince Edward, has been welcoming guests to its spectacular water- and mountain-view rooms since 1927. Visitors come for the warm hospitality—the afternoon tea is a standout—and excellent hiking trails that lattice the area’s national park. Bear’s Hump Trail is popular for its views of the hotel, town and lake. Spring is an especially exciting time for wildlife spotting, when Bighorn sheep, black and brown bears, fox and more can be seen meandering among the alpine landscape (room rates start at $250 a night; glacierparkcollection.com).

MIRAVAL AUSTIN With the tagline “Life in Balance,” it’s no surprise that this stunning all-inclusive spa resort positioned on Lake Travis is robust with wellness offerings. There’s yoga and massage, of course, as well as meals sourced from the on-site farm that are as flavorful as they are healthy. The resort’s extensive activity menu includes lectures and interactive classes on sustainability, meditation and “creative expression” (think: photography; mala crafting). And there’s a seemingly endless array of equine experiences and fitness classes—we love the hikes. Activities on the cinematic expanse celebrate the island nation’s traditions. There’s falconry and archery, golf, horseback riding, fishing in the lake and high tea in ornate dining rooms. A South Asian Dream Wedding in a Caribbean Paradise
At Beaches® Resort in Turks & Caicos
I
f you imagine having your South Asian dream destination wedding in a Caribbean paradise, take a cue from newly married couple Dhruva and Rittika. They chose Beaches Resorts for the most special celebration of their lifetime, because Beaches is the world’s only all-inclusive family resorts that lets couples create their dream wedding and personalize every detail. The couple wanted their cultural traditions to play a central role in their wedding celebration, and they knew nobody could do that better than Beaches. After all, with Beaches Customizable Weddings, brides and grooms have the ability to mix and match endless décor options to reflect their personal sense of style for the various ceremonies and receptions—everything from the colors and abundant floral, to Mandap style and venue locations, to place settings, table décor, menus, bars and more. In the months leading up to their luxurious South Asian destination wedding, Dhruva and Rittika worked closely with their personal Beaches Wedding Entourage to bring the vision of their wedding weekend to life. They were able to incorporate all traditional elements and more into their weekend-long celebration, which included a Haldi, where the seated couple were surrounded by bright orange and yellow fabrics and strands of marigolds. Family and friends gathered around to spread turmeric paste onto the faces of the bride and groom to ward off evil spirits and bring them prosperity.
Later that evening, the couple threw a grand Sangeet celebration, where family and friends performed their choreographed dances beneath an arching dome draped in jewel-toned fabric. The next day began with a stunning beach ceremony under a tented Mandap, followed by more celebrations with a sunset cocktail hour, evening dinner reception complete with entertainment and dancing, a latenight S’mores and Sweets bonfire and finally an after party at Club Liquid. Like Dhruva and Rittika, you’ll be able to incorporate your South Asian traditions into your wedding at Beaches by working with a resourceful wedding team who will go above and beyond to make sure every detail is in place, whether that means sourcing special items not ordinarily part of Beaches’ extensive inventory, or adapting items at the resort with décor, like the golf cart that was transformed for Dhruva’s Baraat. Equipped with a genuine Tandoor oven, and onsite executive chefs that can customize your Indian cuisine menus, Beaches 5-Star Global Gourmet™ culinary team are able to whip up authentic, mouthwatering South Asian dishes, like those served for Dhruva and Rittika’s celebration. Of course, one of the best reasons for a destination wedding at Beaches is that, after the vows are exchanged, you can get your honeymoon started while your guests enjoy an amazing vacation where everything is included for adults and kids alike.

“I ALWAYS KNEW I WANTED A DESTINATION WEDDING, I JUST didn’t know where,” says Krista McKee. After two years of searching, she and now husband Adam Garbutt hosted family at Caerula Mar Club, an idyllic made-for-TV hideaway on South Andros. And that was exactly what drew the Canadian couple to the white sands—Island of Bryan, an HGTV series following the owner/designers as they revamped the property. “My mother and mother in law were obsessed with the show, both had sent me the resort as an option,” says Krista. The fact that the island was a quick flight from Toronto and Ft. Lauderdale (home to Adam’s parents) sealed the deal. And the couple was thrilled with their decision. “The beach is so secluded, we felt like we had the island to ourselves.”
The ceremony was held under a canopy of palm trees.

The magic of tropical life here is that there’s not much to overstretch your daily agenda. Lazing, strolling and snapping photos of the sparkling sands at sunrise, sunset and any time in between are essentially the only items on anyone’s to-do list. There’s also

In Hope Town, on the foot of Elbow Cay on Abaco Island, stands one of the Bahamas most emblematic sites—a candy-striped lighthouse that dates to the last century. Built in 1862 and made operational two years later, the beacon, which is painted in horizontal white and red stripes and can be seen from nearly 25 miles away, is one of the world’s last remaining kerosene lighthouses. Visitors who climb to the top are treated to an expansive only-in-the-Bahamas view of pastel houses, turquoise waters and white sands. ➺

REAL DESTINATION WEDDING LIKE A RAINBOW The art of batik—wax-resistant dyeing of fabric in simple designs—is an Abacos Island mainstay thanks to Androsia, a women-led generational outpost dedicated to the craft. Here, fabrics are hand-sewn and dyed inspired by the colors and natural elements of the Bahamian islands. Interactive tours and classes are on offer at the family-led factory. An outlet store on property rounds out the offerings.

Caerula’s cuisine program is helmed by executive chef Sebastian Perez, who specializes in sea-to-table dishes accented with robust tropical produce. For the reception dinner hosted at the property’s elegant Lusca Restaurant, he married the couple’s love of fish and steak with an exquisite surf-and-turf celebratory menu. Over their stay, they also savored the chef’s simpler fare, including burgers by the pool and lobster eggs benedict at breakfast.

Newport Beach AFTER CANCELING THEIR ORIGINAL WEDDING PLANS, THIS COUPLE MADE A MEMORABLE SPLASH WITH A SMALLER BUT NO LESS SPECTACULAR CELEBRATION CLOSER TO HOME. BY JENNA MAHONEY
AFTER A YEAR OF PLANNING— and pre-paying—a 150 guest celebration in glitzy Las Vegas, the pandemic shutdown shut out Kelli and Anthony Patino’s event slated for March 21, 2020. Parents to twin boys and a daughter, they were at a loss as to where, when and how to celebrate their love. The Balboa Bay Resort in the nearby Southern California city of Newport Beach gifted the couple a wedding complete with all the traditional and social-distancing details. The celebration, which was entirely curated by local planner Rebecca Calagna, was hosted on the waterfront property’s newly revealed Wedding Lawn. Fifty guests toasted Kelli and Anthony, all wearing custom masks. “In the end it turned out better than what we originally planned for our wedding,” says Kelli—whose only additional decision was her dress. Kelli and Anthony on the Balboa Bay Pier.
Love at First Sight Balboa Bay Resort expanded the Wedding Lawn to host pandemic-precautionary events.
Local vendors donated their services.
Kelli entered a wedding contest on a whim. After canceling their nuptials celebration, “we were full of so many different emotions,” she says. “Months went by and I came across a wedding giveaway that The Balboa Bay Resort was putting together to pick a couple to host a wedding for those affected by Covid-19, so I entered.” Although they live just 40 minutes from the waterview resort, she and Anthony had never been to the property. It wasn’t until the big day that they saw the photogenic hotel that sits on the edge of a made-for-Instagram harbor. Upon arrival they were impressed by the “beautiful and elegant hotel, its ocean vista, and the large yachts docked in the background.”
“The scenery at Balboa Bay was beyond expectations; our ceremony and dinner were held on the grassy area beside the boats and water.” Covid precautions with class.

QUITE AMUSING Newport Beach is the classic sunny California setting. The city has two pretty piers where larger-than-life boats are docked. At Balboa Pier is the Balboa Fun Zone, an old-school amusement park complete with an arcade and a ferris wheel that first debuted in 1936. There’s also a restored carousel and bumper cars, among other carnival rides. Adjacent outposts rent bikes to explore the pier, and there are whale watching excursions and day trips to nearby Catalina Island as well.
All together.
SUN SPOTS The centerpoint of the Balboa Bay Resort property is the pool area–this is Southern California, after all. Days here are spent splashing and shooting selfies in the daybeds and private cabanas. An adjacent pool bar serves up a refreshing cocktail menu that’s heavy on vacationperfect spirits, along with California casual cuisine—the poke bowl and mahi mahi tacos are particular must-tries. “We spent an entire day at the pool,” says Kelli. “We wish we could have been able to stay longer! We did not want to leave!” ➺
REAL DESTINATION WEDDING
In attendance—All Kelli’s attendants with custom face coverings.
“Even though this wedding was a prize, the planner made sure to honor our opinions. We got to have our color scheme, our cake, our music, and have our ceremony unfold the way we wished.” NEW NORMAL Warm weather, an outdoor venue and a limited number of guests were just some of the details for this Covid-era celebration. The resort’s planning team created an elegant experience with health and safety guidelines as a priority. There was signage throughout the Wedding Lawn space reminding guests to stay socially distanced. Customized hand sanitizer and masks were also on offer. Family members sat at distanced round tables during the ceremony.
WITH A ROSE Kelli and Anthony wanted uPudis am volupiduci nate ratent to honor their mothers, and did exactly that with a rose ceremony, a tradition that spotlights the importance of love, appreciation and the blending of families. We had custom red glass roses made for keepsakes, says Kelli.

travel notes
The concept of Orange County is as recognizable as a neighboring California zip code for its glitz, glamour and overthe-top beachfront living. Newport Beach, one of the SoCal cities within the sea-hugging county about an hour from Los Angeles, sparkles with chic shopping, high-end restaurants, excellent access to the golden sands and accompanying beach activities—beach volleyball is especially popular— and its most photogenic attribute—the yacht-filled harbor. The 159-room Balboa Bay Resort on the edge of one of the tony city’s most known (and eponymous) piers is the perfect place to experience it all for yourself. Although truly a city hotel, the grand, sandy-hued property is a resort experience with all the expected service and amenities.
