Do we need to explain to our ushers where to seat guests for the ceremony or can they just seat them at random?

Usually the first few rows are reserved for the bride’s and groom’s immediate families so you’ll need to let your ushers know who those people are and to seat them accordingly. Traditionally, the bride’s parents sit in the first row on the left (facing the ceremony site), along with her grandparents and siblings. If the bride’s parents are divorced and prefer to sit separately, the mother and her husband or partner will sit in the first row while the father and his wife (or partner) sit behind them in the second row. Other special relatives may be seated in the second and third rows. The groom’s family is seated in the same manner, but on the right side. BRIDAL PARTY PRESENTS

When is the best time to give our attendants their gifts?

Most couples give their gifts to the wedding party at the rehearsal dinner. Following the main course, dessert is served and the toasts begin. Just so you know, it is customary for the best man to start off by toasting the couple, followed by the groom’s father (traditionally the groom’s parents are the hosts of the event). Afterward, you can acknowledge your attendants and give them their gifts. How you do so is entirely up to you. You can keep things lighthearted and fun or be a bit more sentimental. You can make a general announcement and dispense the gifts all at once, or you might want to say something

special about each member of your wedding party before presenting that person with your memento. Do what feels most natural and comfortable. One couple we know chose to have an intimate bridal-party-only barbecue at their home the day before the rehearsal dinner, and distributed their gifts then. We’re sure your friends will appreciate however you choose to honor them. SAVE-THE-DATE DILEMMA

Do we need to send out a savethe-date notice to everyone on the guest list?

It depends. We recommend that you send all your guests save-the-dates (six to eight months in advance) if you are planning a destination wedding, marrying on a holiday weekend or even if your celebration will take place at a location that gets booked up early, like a beachfront resort or a hotel near a ski resort. However, if you’re marrying locally but inviting anyone who will need to travel, send save-the-dates to the out-oftowners only, so they can make their arrangements for transportation and accommodations well in advance.

BEAUTY BUDGET

Am I supposed to pay for my bridesmaids to have their hair and makeup professionally done? As much as I’d like to it would be quite costly.

You definitely aren’t obligated to pay for their hair and makeup; they can

take care of that on their own. There are some brides who are able to absorb the fees as a thank-you to their attendants, but if your budget is limited—and with costs being as high as they are—don’t feel pressured to take on this additional expense. IN-LAW REQUEST

My fiancé’s sister-in-law wants to be in my wedding party and his mom said it’s proper etiquette to include her. Is this true? I don’t know her well, and have other friends I’d prefer to ask.

There is no rule stating that a spouse-to-be’s sister-in-law should be in the wedding party. And don’t feel pressured to ask anyone you’re not close with. She probably wants to be included because your fiancé’s brother (her husband) will be either best man or a groomsman. You can still include her in the wedding by asking her to give a special reading at the ceremony. Here’s your facial serum 101 guide—all your questions answered with our expert tips and tricks. What is a serum and how does it differ from a moisturizer? “Serum formulas tend to be lighter,” says Yesica Ordonez, aesthetician at Spa Pechanga in Temecula, California. “And serums contain higher concentrations of active ingredients.” Serums are less occlusive than moisturizers, adds Dr. Jennifer Chwalek of Union Square Laser Dermatology in New York City. “This allows the active ingredients to penetrate deeply into the skin. Moisturizers are thicker, formulated to hydrate, protect and restore the skin’s barrier function.”

How do I choose the right serum? It depends on your concern, says Dennis Gross, M.D., of Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare in New York City. “Retinol is the gold standard for treating fine lines as it helps increase cellular turnover, which slows down in your midtwenties,” he says. “If dark spots have you worried, seek out products with vitamin C, or look for alpha and beta hydroxy acids—also known as AHAs and

Lastly, if hydration is a concern, look to hyaluronic acid for its ability to help skin retain moisture.” Aesthetician Vicki Morav, of New York City’s Galerie Aesthetique says, “Different serums address concerns for specific skin conditions based on their ingredients. Benefits vary from resurfacing, purifying, plumping, and protecting skin to much more.”

Where does a serum fall in my skincare regimen? The basic drill is cleanser, serum, then moisturizer. The point is to apply serum to freshly cleansed skin, finishing with moisturizer. Keep in mind the difference between day and night serums as well. “Day serums typically contain ingredients that can help to repair sun and environmental damage, while also being lighter to help with layering products,” says Dr. Naissan Wesley, a dermatologist based in Los Angeles, California. “Night serums tend to be more hydrating to improve moisturization while we sleep.”

What’s the best way to apply a serum? Los Angeles-based aesthetician Alexandra Wagner, owner of Alexandra Wagner Skincare, suggests gently dabbing serum into freshly cleansed skin. “Lightly press two pumps worth into your face, neck and décolletage with fingers,” she says. After applying you can also use skincare tools to stimulate circulation. “My favorite are Biologique Recherche Cryo Sticks,” says Morav. “I keep them in the freezer to use while they’re cold. Their cooling effect helps the serum’s absorption and efficiency.”

How long does it take to see a difference in my skin after starting a new serum? Between eight to 10 weeks, say our experts. “After a few weeks you should see a difference in your skin,” says Wagner. “If you are working on balancing pigmentation or see a lessening of brown spots, this can take a bit longer, just be patient. Consistency assures a successful outcome.”

Another great tradition that I have begun to see in my clients’ weddings is a vow exchange between husband and wife followed by exchange of vows with the children, to bring everyone together into a single family unit. Another idea is to create a family first dance: After the couple has their first dance together, the children join them, forming a circle for the next dance.

I’m planning my daughter’s wedding and want to know what you’d say are the numberone reception dos and don’ts.

The number one do is making sure your guests are dancing and having fun! And the number one don’t is making sure that no one is sitting down for too long eating, with lulls of time in between dancing and dinner—that’s very, very important.

Absolutely! An abundance of flickering candles is an easy and inexpensive way to replace more costly flowers. What are four quick ways to make your event special?

ONE: Tell the story of who you are as a bride and groom throughout your party—via music, cuisine, color and other details—to make your wedding more special and personalized. TWO: Create an environment. You don’t have to have a theme to have a great wedding. You have to have a style, which means color and essence. So think sense of style—Tuscan, French— rather than full-on theme. THREE: Make sure something different is happening every 30 minutes. It may mean the food might change, the music might change or the entertainment might change. Which brings me to FOUR, making sure that people feel as if they are moving, i.e., going from ceremony to cocktails to dinner and to an after-party vs. sitting down in one location for too much time. This will help keep the energy level high and the event going strong—as well as make your wedding feel bigger and even more fun.

When having a wedding what are some ways to remember loved ones who are no longer with us?

Any tips for jazzing up a smaller wedding to achieve a higher-end illusion and maybe save some money?

The three key things for any successful event are, first, making sure you provide comfort for your guests: that means ample food and drink. Second, making sure that you have great entertainment. This need not mean an orchestra or band. Hire a fabulous DJ or go more DIY and put together a great music playlist on Spotify for your guests to enjoy. Third is the visual aspect: This doesn’t have to mean masses of pricey floral arrangements; it could be a colorful, stylish overall look to your tabletops and buffets. PROS NATURE-MADE DECOR Let’s face it, who needs lavish decorations when an amber sunset, blooming wildflowers or acres of rolling kelly-green hills can serve as your backdrop? “Outdoor and tent weddings are among my favorite,” says Allison Sargent, of Allison Sargent Events in New Jersey, whose own daughter, Carly, was married in a custom-built tent overlooking two fairways on a golf course. “Everyone loves being outdoors on a glorious day,” she says. A BLANK CANVAS “Tented receptions are fantastic because they are blank canvases,” says Julie Pryor, of Pryor Events in Los Angeles. “You can add dramatic lighting, carpeting, and draping. And clear tents bring the outdoors in.”

CONS UNPREDICTABLE WEATHER “I am a big fan of outdoor events, but you need to be flexible and realize you do not have control of the weather, which has a mind of its own,” says Pryor. “I always have a backup for outdoor events, even in Southern California. This may be an indoor space that an event can be moved into or a gorgeous tent.” TENTS ARE COSTLY While the cost of tents can vary widely, based on size, type and structural design, Marcy Blum of Marcy Blum Events and Weddings in New York City says you should “absolutely” expect to pay more for a tented wedding because you’re shelling out for “not only the tent, but also for the tables, chairs, and other peripherals that are rarely included in site fees.” TEMPERATURE CONTROL “When you host your wedding outdoors you are always vulnerable to weather and change in temperature,” says Colin Cowie, of Colin Cowie Events and Celebrations, in New York and Los Angeles. What to do? “Make sure to shield guests from the sun during the day and provide heaters in the evening,” advises Pryor. Handing out paper fans and parasols can go a long way toward making your guests feel as comfortable as possible. ➺ 37

BUILT-IN ACCOMMODATIONS You will often be able to reserve a block of rooms for your out-oftown guests at a discounted rate. And many hotels offer wedding packages that include free honeymoon stays.

LACK OF FLEXIBILITY Depending on the hotel, your ability to rearrange the tables to suit your preferences may be limited. “Some banquet managers can be set in their ways and make it difficult to change things up,” says Blum. HIDDEN COSTS It’s important to find out exactly what’s included in your wedding—and what’s not. “For a hotel wedding, inquire about cake-cutting fees, valet costs, and overtime charges before signing a contract,” advises Pryor. Jessica calls herself an amateur foodie, so good food and drinks were a must for her wedding. “After touring a few banquet hall and hotel ballroom venues, my husband and I realized we either had to book a restaurant that served the type of food we wanted or a raw space that would allow us to bring in our own caterer. But the cost of turning the raw space into something appealing would have blown our budget.” WELL-TRAINED SERVICE STAFF “Restaurants are in the business of making good food and providing good service,” says Jessica. Regardless, Pryor stresses the importance of booking eateries that are

LOCAL CUSTOMS AND RESOURCES With a destination wedding, you will often have to put your trust in vendors located many miles away and with whom you may not be very familiar. “You have to rely on local resources or pay big dollars to ship it all in,” says Cowie. “Getting married in a different country is a challenge because each country has its own set of laws when it comes to marriage,” he says.➺

As Blum explains, “One-stop venues are not usually the prettiest locations and may require a lot of decor dollars.” BOUND BY THE RULES The house may want you to stick to a particular setup or have limitations on the use of candles or lighting equipment and sound. Also, says Pryor, “Be sure to check on which vendors can be brought

in. You do not want to be locked into the venue’s referrals.” POTENTIAL “WEDDING FACTORY” FEEL With venues that rely on weddings for their bread and butter, you risk feeling like you’re just one in a long line of brides waiting for their turn to use the space. This is especially true if you happen to bump into another bride getting married in an adjoining room. Talk about buzz kill. Furthermore, says Cowie, “The problem with one-stop venues is most weddings tend to look the same unless you are bringing in big decor elements and have the time to set them up.” So the way to ensure that this is your day is to transform the space as best you can to suit your vision. 

RENTAL COSTS GO UP Although you save money on the venue itself, a wedding for a large group can get expensive simply because of all the rentals you’ll need. “Remember that you will have to bring everything in, from tables and chairs to bars, glasses and even cooking equipment,” says Pryor. VALET PARKING Another important task is to assess the parking situation. Consider arranging for valet parking—and let your neighbors know ahead of time. CLEANUP REQUIRED At the end of the wedding, someone has to do the potentially massive job of cleaning up. This can either be an added expense (hiring a cleaner) or a task bestowed on a few very generous volunteers.

t’s so easy to get overwhelmed and sidetracked (Pinterest anyone?) when you’re planning the biggest day of your life. You may find yourself jam-packing your planning into too many evenings and weekends, but there are ways to make sure that time is optimized. Here’s a checklist to be more efficient and keep planning from consuming your entire life.

BREAK UP YOUR WEDDING TO-DO LIST BY DATE: Having smaller lists will serve you well with such a big undertaking. Get out a calendar and work backwards from your wedding date, filling in deadlines for all your must-do tasks. Then create daily or weekly to-do lists for yourself. This way you have smaller, more manageable lists instead of one big, scary ongoing one. DELEGATE: You know how friends and family always say, “let me know if there’s anything I can do”? Well they actually mean it—so take them up on it. Take a look at This could include making appointments with your to-do list, vendors, comparing prices, finding florists in your break off certain neighborhood, etc. Plus, don’t forget to get your guy involved. Look at your to-do list and break off tasks for your certain tasks for your man. Bundle them to be more productive with your time. For instance, set a specific time and day to check in with your vendors or pay all your deposit bills at once instead of piecemeal.

ASSIGN A TIME LIMIT: Oh the time you could spend researching color palettes, bouquets, venues, etc. online! To avoid analysis paralysis, assign yourself a limit on how much time per day or week you spend researching each florist, dressmaker and venue. At some point you need to just made a decision and move on—otherwise you’ll feel like you’re drowning in choices.

KEEP NOTES ACCESSIBLE: No doubt you’re holding onto myriad swatches, websites and lists as you plan, but sometimes carrying that enormous paper binder just isn’t doable. I suggest going digital with Evernote. Start on the website and make notebooks for all your vendors and a notebook for ideas and inspiration. Then use the app when you’re out and about to refer to your notes or add information as it pops into your head.

REWARD YOURSELF: One of the keys to getting things done is having a light at the end of the tunnel. Yes, getting married to the love of your life should be that light but I’m talking shortterm goals here. To stay motivated to work through your to-do list give yourself a reward. This could be a half hour on Pinterest, a 20-minute call with your best friend, a mani/pedi or just about anything that will inspire you to get more done in less time—the better to walk down the aisle in stress-free, serene style.

BE REALISTIC: Take a look at your to-do lists. Set yourself up for success by being realistic and understanding that you might need some help crossing them off. Or you might just need to let some of those ideas go and move on to what you are able to do. Also set aside a scheduled time (like Sunday mornings) to chat

SITE FEES “Booking on a Friday night or Sunday afternoon or evening can be a big savings over heftier Saturday night costs. Also consider a Thursday night wedding, which can shave approximately 10% to 20% off your budget, and you and your guests get to enjoy a three-day weekend (just make sure to send out save-thedates first!),” says Jenny Orsini, of Jenny Orsini Events in Berkeley Heights, NJ. “Prices are lower during the months of December through March, and can add up to $40 to $50 less per guest,” Orsini says. (Adds Christopher Confero, of Christopher Confero Design in Atlanta, GA: “Renting a venue in January can save you around 25%.”)

“Sunday mornings are also becoming more popular, since you have the option for a terrific brunch with a large spread, at a cost of 30% less than a dinner,” says Andrea Correale, president of Elegant Affairs Off-Premise Catering and Event Design, in Glen Cove, NY.

“When looking for a venue, you should always ask about the special events planned for the space both before and after yours. Many times, you can see what equipment (lighting, staging, draping, etc.) they are using and potentially ‘share’ the cost of the equipment if both events have similar needs,” says Dallas event designer AKA “America’s Sassiest Lifestyle Guru” Steve Kemble.

FLOWERS & DECOR “Put your money where guests spend time and are going to appreciate it. If you aren’t having a sit-down dinner, don’t use your flower budget on expensive table centerpieces. If you’re having a cocktail reception and everyone will be lined up at the bar, have your designer create a ‘wow’ floral piece in that area so guests enjoy it all night! If you concentrate the decor in one area instead of spreading it out around the room, this could easily save you 20% on your decor budget,” says Confero. “Carnations are one of the most cost-effective flowers available. When they’re used in dense monochromatic designs, they have a lot of impact. Although they aren’t as lush as roses or peonies, these hardy little flowers can be used to

create a similar look for half the cost,” says Pennylyn Kaine, owner and floral designer, Blossom and Bee, Oak Ridge, NJ. Ask your floral designer to make blooms look pricier. “For instance, avoid ‘antique hydrangeas’ that have wine-tinted blossoms, since they cost about $24 apiece retail. Your

“The days of gluttony are over,” Correale continues. “It’s now in good taste to tantalize guests during the cocktail hour with just one or two stations as opposed to four or five, and offer handpassed hors d’oeuvres, choosing healthier, lighter foods, which cost a lot less than heavier hot-station foods.”

“Buffet style can usually be more cost-effective than formal, sit-down service, saving approximately 20 to 30%,” says Orsini. “Brunches offer a large spread of food, with many light and healthy dishes that are far less expensive per menu item than the heavier and more indulgent foods found at cocktail

CAKE & DESSERTS “My rule of thumb is to only plan on having cake for 75% of your guests,” says Confero. “And do you absolutely need a groom’s cake? Absolutely not.” “Design a cake that has some faux layers for making a

big visual impression while cutting it, and also have a sheet cake in the kitchen for serving, which can save 15 to 20%,” says Orsini. Go with standard icing flavors like vanilla and lemon, and opt for buttercream over fondant, which can save around $1 per slice,” says Anne Heap, owner and cake designer at Pink Cake Box in Denville, NJ. “Bring in your own candy buffet instead of having a big, expensive Viennese dessert hour. Or, have a plated dessert with two to three desserts of your choice, to serve along with the cake,” suggests Orsini.

Choose crowd-pleasing classic flavors. “For cakes, vanilla, chocolate, lemon and key lime cost a bit less than red velvet and carrot cake,” Heap tells us.

“Instead of a Viennese dessert hour, it’s now an elegant trend to have waiters handpass little dessert options. Since the caterer can control the portions, it often saves $8 per person,” says Correale.

PHOTOGRAPHY Consider going with a smaller photo package upfront with the potential to upgrade after the wedding, such as ordering your flash drive later,” says New York-based photographer Amanda Picone. “Consult with photographers about your planned timeline. I usually recommend coverage

only through to the cake cutting and bouquet toss. After that point, many of your photos will be repetitive dancing shots. If everything is occurring in one location, six hours of coverage might be enough and save you hundreds of dollars over a longer time frame,” says Picone. “You might only need one person taking photos if it’s a small wedding. Cutting a second and third shooter from the list can save at least 20%,” says Confero.

MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT “A DJ is often going to be a lot cheaper than a full band, and would probably save you 60% or so,” Confero tells us. “Check out local bands that haven’t made it big yet. Go out for drinks with the girls and scope out some local talent at the bars you frequent. If you have your heart set on a particular act, talk to them and see if negotiation is possible,” says Confero. 

“Rather than have your DJ work during the cocktail hour, ask the venue if they can stream music from an iPhone. Or, if you have a friend or family member who is a musician, ask them to perform during cocktail hour. It adds a nice personal touch. Cutting out the DJ’s extra time can save approximately 10 to 15%,” says Orsini.

FIRST THINGS FIRST • MAKE THE ANNOUNCEMENT. Some couples just don’t feel right if anyone knows their big news before their parents and other close family members do. If possible, tell both sets of folks in person. If your parents don’t live nearby, put in a special phone call. • DELVE INTO DREAMS. Sit down with your fiancé and talk ideas. Think about the style you envision, whether it’s a beach bash, a sit-down dinner in a ballroom or a ceremony on a mountaintop. No talk of money. Yet. • ROUGH OUT THE TIMING. While you don’t have to set a firm date now, it’s smart to have an idea of what month or season you want to marry in. Then you’ll know how long you have to get things organized. Because your wedding’s size determines where you’ll hold the party, how much it will cost (prices usually rise per guest) and whether travel will be involved, creating a guest list is one of the most important things to do. So make your list; your fiancé and both families should do the same. You can, and likely will, cut later, but this first number will be your base. • NOW TALK MONEY. It’s rare these days that the bride’s parents pick up the whole bill, so decide on your bottom line. Find out from both sets of parents if or how much they can contribute.

GET ORGANIZED Set up a spreadsheet or notebook with sections for each budget category. This way you can input the amount you want to spend on each item and then note your expenditures. As you near your limits, you can start to figure out ways to cut costs.

SET YOUR SITES CEREMONY SPECIFICS. Finding an officiant and a ceremony site can be simple—if, say, you wish to marry in your hometown house of worship. Even if you’re no longer living in the area, you may have family who still are and can help out. Sometimes for the sake of convenience, couples choose a place that’s in between their homes and their parents’. And then there’s the destination wedding; just make sure that everyone you really want to join you and your groom can afford to travel and is able to make it.

THE RECEPTION VENUE. Think again

about those wedding dreams, and see how they mesh with reality. Perhaps you envision a lush, outdoor garden abloom with pink and white flowers. Fine, but what if you can’t find just the right place or the weather is an issue? Maybe there’s a quaint hotel with a pretty courtyard that would suit. Some couples find historic homes in their area to rent. Use local resources to narrow down options: a wedding planner or a recently married friend. Check wedding websites and bridal magazines. usually book weddings many months in advance, so get on this one early. Get recommendations from friends, then research what kinds of shots you’d like to see—formal portraits and dancing shots or a candid, journalistic format. Always ask to see other wedding albums the pro has done. • MUSICIANS. Arrange to hear musicians perform before you sign them on. Make sure they agree to stick to the playlist you give them, including any “do not play” tunes. Find out how they will dress and how many breaks they will take. Hiring a DJ is usually less expensive than a live band, but not always. • FLOWERS AND DECOR. Once you have your reception site booked, you can decide on table QUICK TIP arrangements and other decorations. ATTIRE ADVICE It’s not strictly necessary to know wedding place and time details before you shop. Whereas fashion guidelines were more rigid in the past (not wearing a glittery sheath for a daytime wedding, for example), the rules are looser now. But check with your house of worship; some require covered shoulders or heads. Start shopping whenever you feel pumped—and don’t forget to have your guy rent formalwear for himself and his groomsmen. ➺

ON THE MONEY Wedding budgets have a way of expanding like a balloon. Keep yours from popping (and give yourself some wiggle room for those unexpected expenses or must-haves) by reining in spending. Here, six smart saving tips: ➊ BORROW. Did you totally love the tiara your sister wore? Borrow it for your ensemble! You can borrow jewelry (just like the stars do at Oscar time) and other accessories, honeymoon luggage (no reason to splurge on new suitcases if your parents have good stuff), vases for centerpieces (if you’re doing these yourself) and so on. ➋ USE PEOPLE’S DIY SKILLS. If your aunt is a sewing whiz, she can create a veil or even do alterations on your dress. A skilled artist can create personalized invitations. A crafty pal can come up with a fun favor. An avid scrapbooker can put together an album for you. Just let them know this will be their wedding gift to you. ➌ CREATE A SIGNATURE DRINK. If you’re tempted to save by having a cash bar, stop! Instead, cut down on liquor costs by

offering one signature drink (like a gourmet martini) along with beer, soda and juices. Another idea: Buy cases of a favorite local wine and serve just that. ➍ LIMIT THE LIMOS. It’s nice to pull up to the ceremony location in a sleek limo or classic car, but consider skipping the rides elsewhere to save money. Instead have your brother or a cousin chauffeur you and your new hubby to the reception. ➎ DON’T GO FLOWER MAD. There are plenty of ways to keep your bill from blooming: Buy flowers wholesale and give them to a florist to work with or create centerpieces that use candles and just a few beautiful blooms. A profusion of petals looks lush and lovely, but keep in mind you can get the same effect with fewer flowers than you think. ➏ AVOID IMPULSE BUYING. Got everything on your list? Then stop shopping. If you’ve already bought your bridesmaids lovely shawls, and you see pretty handbags that would match… and sparkly earrings…put them down.

DRESS SHOPPING • ERASE THE EMOTION. If you were the girl who pinned towels in her hair to play bride, you may need extra help with this step. Pulling the emotion out of the event and remaining level-headed as you shop for your dress will help you stay within the bounds of both budget and practicality. If it helps, bring your mom and a down-to-earth pal along with you.

• KNOW WHAT KIND OF SHOPPER YOU ARE. Some brides relish the hunt for the ideal dress, and happily book a number of appointments at bridal salons. They like having a salesperson who offers ideas and selects gown styles for them. Others would really love to just slip into a store (a department store, a specialty boutique, a secondhand shop) and find their dress hanging there on the rack. Both ways are possible. Decide which kind of shopper you are, and work accordingly. • DON’T SECOND-GUESS YOURSELF. Think you’ve found The One? Then you probably have. Look no further—and relax.

QUICK TIP It’s likely everyone will be going snap-happy with their camera phones. To avoid ending up with 300 nearly identical shots, give guests a few ideas (print up a card to place on each table). Suggest one photo of each couple at the table, some goofy dance pics and a surprise shot of their choice—all to be shared later.

TAME THAT GUEST LIST When you pay a caterer by the head, every guest is a ka-ching on the total bill—not just for the food and drink, but also for tips and taxes, which rise accordingly. Here are some ways to keep the list under control: • DON’T INVITE THE WHOLE OFFICE—either

just ask your boss and your closest friends at work or no one at all. • DON’T DIG INTO YOUR OLD ADDRESS BOOK

for blasts from the past; stick to those people you see regularly. • REIN IN PARENTS. They can invite their friends,

but they don’t have to ask the garden club and the tennis buddies and the former neighbors.

HOW INVITING Your invitations should be sent out six to eight weeks before the big day, so work backward from there to be sure you order in time. The basic invite announces the hosts of the wedding (whether that’s the two of you, your parents or a combination) and the place and time of the ceremony. It may include a card that gives the reception details, a reply card and envelope. Have a sample of the invite in hand before deciding to use it—and proofread! Never include registry information with your invitation.

PIECES OF THE PIE No matter what your wedding budget may be, here’s a rough idea of how much is typically spent in each category. Keep in mind that the numbers are not hard and fast. Some couples may, for example, choose to spend more on photography and less on flowers. It’s completely up to you!

MASON BURKS WOOLDRIDGE AND JOHANNA REHILL fell in love over a glass of water. “Mason was in town finishing a contract with the local school districts,” says Johanna, a middle school reading teacher. (The groom is a school safety consultant.) “On his last night, a friend dragged him to a local pizza place, where I was bartending at the time.” They capped off 11 months of dating with a family vacation on Captiva Island over Johanna’s birthday. Says she, “Mason got down on one knee in front of my family and gave me the best present I could ask for, my engagement ring!” The pandemic put a few stops and starts in their planning, but one thing never changed: the wedding date itself: August 20, 2020— Mason’s birthday. The couple exchange vows at The Pump House Weddings and B&B in Bloomsburg, PA.

“We chose The Pump House Weddings and B&B for our micro-wedding,” Johanna says. “We were still being super-cautious, and felt the venue would be the safest option for family and guests, complete with an outdoorsy, beautiful and whimsical feel—and on-site lodgings. LEGALLY WEDDED Licenses are required to marry in the state of Colorado. Both applicants must appear in person with proof of age and the $30 fee. There is no waiting period, nor are blood tests or witnesses required. The license, which is issued by the County Clerk’s office, is valid for 35 days.

“THERE IS SOMETHING SUPER SPECIAL ABOUT THE DESERT,” say Maddie née Marcus and her husband, Kevin Gross. And the city of Palm Springs, an oasis known for its mid-century architecture, excellent food and direct access to some of the country’s most spectacular desert landscapes, is one of their favorite places to visit. The Los Angeles-based couple hosted friends and family for a weekend celebration that centered around a ceremony in a pretty garden with views of the cactus-studded San Jacinto Mountains at Casa Cody, an intimate modernist-meetsSpanish architecture property in the tony enclave. “The whole weekend felt like camp,” they say. “All of our closest friends and family were on site, so the grounds felt very warm and homey.”

In addition to splashing around pretty pools shaded by towering palm trees, popular area activities include golf and hiking across the cacti-punctuated landscape in nearby Joshua Tree National Park. To enjoy it all, Maddie, who visited the enclave multiple times prior to her big day, suggests packing “sunscreen, golf clubs, a great book and good vibes.”

Palm Springs boasts the largest collection of mid-century modern homes in the world. Famed for its attention to indoor/ outdoor living, the local style—known as Desert Modernism—celebrates relaxation and enjoying the natural beauty of the surroundings. Characteristics include flat roofs, carports, breeze-block accents and loads of windows. Among the city’s notable buildings are the Twin Palms Estate, once owned by Frank Sinatra; the Elrod House, which starred in a James Bond movie; and the local art museum that’s housed in a 1961 Santa Fe Savings & Loan building. ➺

When asked about their favorite eateries in the oasis, they said “too many!” But also share some of their top picks among the many: “Norma’s at The Parker for brunch, poolside lunch at The Colony Palms, Bar Cecil for a delicious dinner and drinks, Sherman’s Deli, Tommy Bahama, Seymour’s bar for unique cocktails,” they explain. Maddie and Kevin also enjoy the pool at the Ace hotel. “It’s a total vibe and a lot of fun, with great people watching and interesting cocktails.

“Jessica Fauls of Bee Loved Events who was an absolute dream.” She helped the couple details to make ther “magical weekend.” Among some of their favorites were Luna Design Studios, a local florist and designer, and Over the Rainbow, a bakery. “All of the desserts for the wedding weekend (mini donuts for Friday night, wedding cake, which was vanilla bean and red velvet with cream cheese frosting, and treats for the dessert table).” were crafted by the bakery. “We had so much fun trying all of their unique, incredible cake flavors. This place is truly a gem!” they say.

BRIDAL GUIDE: How did you choose to honeymoon at Sandals Grenada? ALI HUBER: I had visited Grenada on a work trip a few years ago and was just so enamored by the beauty of the island. They organized our spa treatments for us, made all our dinner reservations in advance, reserved beach and pool cabanas for us and set up so many romantic surprises along the way. BG: In addition to your personal pool, did you have a favorite place to make a splash? AH: My husband and I love lounging by the pool, sipping our favorite cocktails, reading good books, and just relaxing. The main pool at Sandals Grenada is such a great time! Located at the heart of the resort, it’s a popular spot for guests to hang out during the day and night. We spent a lot of time there. We met some new friends at the swim-up bar. BG: Is there a favorite snack or treat that you enjoyed throughout your vacation? AH: Nutmeg anything and everything! Grenada is the Spice Isle, so nutmeg is a common ingredient. Our favorite treat was the fresh nutmeg ice cream at the resort’s Cafe de Paris. We enjoyed it as a mid-day snack by the pool, a cone before dinner and afterwards for dessert. BG: Did you have a favorite meal? AH: On our final night, we had a candlelight dinner on the

And the sun was beginning to set in the pink sky. It was all so perfect and a storybook! In addition to a private pool on our ocean-view balcony, where we could watch the sunrise and sunsets, our room had a soaking tub for two and butler service. BG: Tell us more about the butler service. AH: Another reason we chose our destination was for ultimate relaxation. After planning a wedding, we didn’t want to think about any arrangements. During the visit, we learned the history of cocoa and how it’s made. We ground our own and sampled loads, including 100% cocoa, and nutmeg- and ginger infused chocolate. BG: Do you have any favorite natural attractions? AH: Annandale Waterfalls is a gorgeous location, surrounded by tropical flowers and green vegetation. It has the best photo spots. Afterwards, we went to a fun, trendy restaurant called the White Orchid, where we had lunch and local beers with a breathtaking view of the waterfall. BG: What did you bring home? AH: Grenada is known as the Spice Isle, so you definitely have to stop by the local spice market and buy a few fresh spices.
