My friend missed her son’s first dance and cake cutting and is heartbroken. She was out on the terrace with other guests and was not notified. The couple did not have an MC or DJ but they did have a wedding coordinator. Any advice? Chicago, Illinois

So sorry to hear this! I can’t stress enough how important it is for couples to think through the details of their day, and even if they plan on having a small, casual celebration it’s important that family members (especially parents!) share in special moments such as the first dance, toast and cake cutting. They needed to communicate clear instructions to their wedding coordinator—but as a professional planner, she should have known to make an announcement that the first dance and cake cutting were about to begin. RSVP PLEASE

Our response cards are due in less than a week and about 25 guests have not yet sent in their RSVPs. Our caterer needs a head count. Should we email a reminder Freeport, Maine or just call?

If you have all 25 guests’ emails contact them immediately. I would also call them and ask your fiancé, both sets of parents (especially if any of the non-respondents are their friends and relatives) and attendants to pitch in. A phone call conveys a sense of urgency and you’ll get a quicker response. I’m sure many of these invitees do intend to come—either they had all good intentions of sending in their RSVPs but let it slide or perhaps their response cards are

already in the mail. No matter the reason, you’ll be relieved to get a head count for your caterer. SHOWER PRESSURE

Although my husband and I are paying for my daughter’s wedding the groom’s mom wants me to co-host a shower with her. I told her we cannot afford any more expenses but she’s insistent. What should I do?

Stand firm. There’s no reason why you should feel pressured to co-host a shower for your daughter (which is traditionally the responsibility of the attendants) especially since you’re already picking up the tab for the big day. If the groom’s mom wants to host (and pay for) a shower she can certainly do so but you should not feel guilty or obligated to pitch in financially. AT-HOME WEDDING TIPS

My fiancé and I would like to have a tented wedding at my parents’ home. They have a huge backyard and we think it will be more cost-effective. What do we need to Columbia, South Carolina consider?

There are quite a few things to take into consideration. While an athome wedding can be lovely and unique, there are a number of details that may not prove as cost-effective as you’d like. Rental fees are required for the tent, tables, chairs, linens, silverware and glassware, for example. You will also need to rent a refrigeration truck and a dance floor. Depending on the weather,

you might need heating lamps, fans or an air-conditioning unit. There should be plenty of restrooms available for guests so you may be required to rent trailers that provide them. Make sure there is adequate space for guest parking and that the kitchen is large enough to accommodate the catering team. There should be enough electrical power available to handle kitchen needs, entertainment and lighting so a generator may be necessary. Also, access to the home the week before the wedding is essential as there will be lots of deliveries. And finally, you’ll need to get permission from your local township and acquire any necessary permits. What colors, styles and skirt lengths do you think will be most popular in 2019? A few trending colors right now include blue (ranging from light to dark), neutral colors like dusty or desert rose and deeper hues, such as burgundy, cabernet and hunter green. In terms of style, long skirts are still the most popular, though we are seeing more brides request shorter lengths than previous seasons. Overall, clean lines and simple silhouettes are going to be prevalent in 2019.

Be wedding-picture perfect with a little help from these specialized treatments. by Natasha Wolff

HIGH-TECH FACIAL TREATMENTS “My brides don’t want to have to wear much makeup on the big day, they want naturally clear, glowing skin,” says celebrity aesthetician Joanna Vargas. To that end, Vargas takes a multi-pronged approach with her Triple Crown Facial, consisting of a deep cleansing, a peel and a stimulating microcurrent treatment, "which leaves you looking de-puffed with defined cheekbones." Vargas is also a proponent of LED light treatments, which employ blue and red light to clarify, brighten, boost collagen and fight acne. You can reap benefits with at-home LED light devices such as Dr. Dennis Gross SpectraLite FaceWare Pro. Top cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman is another fan of light therapy. “There’s no direct contact with the skin, so the light doesn’t cause any burns or skin damage. LASERS Whether you’re looking to do away with brown spots on your décolletage or remove unwanted leg, bikini or underarm hair (men request it for furry backs, ear and nose hair), there’s a laser to address your concern. For complexion perfection, laser resurfacing via one of the new generation devices like Aerolase Neo combats sun damage, lessens wrinkles, dilated blood vessels, acne and melasma. “Aerolase Neo is a newer laser, with a short pulse, which means no pain, no numbing and no redness or recovery time,” enthuses dermatologist Dr. Patricia Wexler of Wexler Dermatology in NYC. Aesthetician Jeannel Astarita, founder of Just Ageless skin-care and body-contouring studio, recommends a series of Laser Genesis sessions to stimulate collagen, address dark spots and minimize pore size while getting acne under control. Laser: about $425-$600 per treatment session

BODY CONTOURING Innovative body-contouring treatments are another protocol suited to brides and grooms alike. SculpSure and Emsculpt can help diminish stubborn fat pockets on the abdomen, love handles, thighs and butt. With SculpSure, an application device administers light-based energy to heat and damage fat cells, which are then swept away by the body’s lymphatic system. Four to six treatments per area of 25 minutes each are required to see results, but most patients experience no pain and there’s no down time (you can go back to work right after). Emsculpt employs high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy to induce so-called supra-maximal contractions of the muscles (think 20,000 pulses per session) to strengthen, tone and firm abdominal muscles, and lift and firm the buttocks—while at the same time breaking down fat cells. Four treatments are required over a two-week period and each treatment is 30 minutes per area. SculpSure: about $1,650 per treatment Emsculpt: from $750 per treatment

THE “BROTOX” EFFECT Chalk it up to social media, “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” and a more gender fluid approach to personal style: Doctors and aestheticians are treating more men than ever. “A typical situation we see is women bringing their fiancés to the office,” says Dr. Daniel Maman, a board-certified plastic surgeon at 740 Park Plastic Surgery in NYC. “And the men are eager to have procedures done.”

INJECTABLES Botox continues to be a top treatment choice for brides and with good reason. It’s fast and effective, with results evident in one to two weeks. The most common target areas are the forehead, around the eyes and between the brows, aka the “elevens”—those vertical lines between the eyebrows. But Botox has other uses as well. “Botox injections in the underarms are a very common request from brides and their partners to combat sweat on their wedding day,” says Dr. Maman. On the filler front, doctors have a wider arsenal of formulas from which to choose than in years past. Juvéderm Voluma XC, Volbella XC and Vollure XC (all by Allergan) are entering the market with specific uses for cheeks, lips and other areas of the face. “These new fillers are better quality, longer lasting and the prices have remained stable so brides are now getting more for their money,” says Dr. Maman. Dr. Engelman loves these hyaluronic acid-based fillers because “the results are immediate, but even better is the fact that hyaluronic acid fillers also encourage collagen production.” Botox: $300-$1,800, depending on area treated Filler: about $950 per syringe

WED FOR LESS Take note of these little-known ways to cut costs and save big. by Catey Hill

Put a “15-minute warning” into your contract with the photographer. A lot of photographers and videographers charge bigtime fees if your wedding goes longer than the time you’ve booked them for. To prevent that unexpected bill, put a “15-minute warning” clause into your contract stating that they must give you a 15-minute heads up before they begin charging you overtime, and that if they don’t, you will not have to pay for those overages.

Take a tax deduction— on your wedding. You can get a tax deduction for donating some of your wedding purchases to a qualified charitable organization (note that “qualified” is very important: irs.gov/pub/ irs-pdf/p526.pdf) or even just by having your wedding ceremony at certain venues. • If you think you’ll have leftover food from your reception, contact a local homeless shelter and see if you can donate it. • If you’re not going to reuse your flowers, contact your church to ask if you can do-

nate them (if you had a church wedding, you may be able to leave your flowers there as a donation) or reach out to a local hospital or nursing home. • If you have a wedding in a church or synagogue, or at a government-owned locale like a state park, you may be able to deduct the fee paid for the ceremony (check with the locale to make sure it’s tax deductible). Consider “business” hotels for your wedding. Hotels that cater primarily to business travelers are typically packed during the week, but have lots of vacancies on weekends. WE ASKED BRIDES TO REVISIT THEIR WEDDINGS AND SHARE WHAT THEY WOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY. BY DEBRA WITT

Brides are planners. They craft color schemes, decode guest lists, crunch numbers, and plot for weeks to pull off the ceremony and party of a lifetime. And almost universally they succeed. Still, no matter how many times a bride crossed her T’s and dotted her I’s, inevitably, there are details she wishes she’d handled differently: missed photo opportunities, vendor mix-ups, decorating delays. To help you avoid these snafus, recent brides have shared their big-day regrets. We then asked wedding pros to examine what went wrong so you don’t wind up repeating their mistakes.

IF I COULD PLAN IT AGAIN...

I’d hire a videographer. Having endured too many viewings of hours-long wedding videos, Christine Fennessy didn’t once consider hiring a videographer to capture her lakeside nuptials. But a year later, she confesses, she’d love to be able to hit play and revisit the day she was married on the shores of Owasco Lake in Auburn, NY. “I never thought I would say that, but I know I would cry every time I watched it.” THE TAKEAWAY Christine’s not alone in this regard—it was the most repeated “regret” among brides we interviewed. Michelle Engvall, owner of Married + More, A Wedding Planning Boutique in Seattle, says having a videographer “is money well spent, and it doesn’t have to break the bank.” She suggests looking for a professional who offers a “highlights” video package. “These are typically 5 to 10 minutes long, and tell the story of the day from start to finish in a condensed version.” Expect to pay in the neighborhood of $1,500 for a short, edited video with sound. I’d enlist someone to field my calls the entire day. On the morning of her August wedding

in Annville, PA, Lauren Strafford-Shiner woke up excited and relaxed. That soon changed when her phone started to ring. “At first it was family members calling with good wishes,” she recalls. “But then some of the vendors started calling with minor questions or updates.” Lauren wasn’t fazed until her florist phoned to say she was having trouble getting into the church. “That one did get me flustered.” Then it was Lau-

did my homework,” says the New Yorker who planned an intimate wedding in a lush SoHo courtyard. When it came time to choose a non-denominational minister to officiate, she found someone whose sample texts were impressive. “We met in person and really seemed to click,” she says. About two months before the wedding, however, the officiant bristled after receiving an email from Giannosa outlining a few

I’d lock in a venue before the other details—like my dress! “You’d think in the city of New York finding a venue would be easy,” says Danielle Fernandez, “But we didn’t nail down the space until September and our wedding was in December. Meantime, I’d found my dress in June, and had moved ahead with many other details. I’m just lucky the dress I picked worked for a wedding in a modern space in a SoHo hotel.” THE TAKEAWAY While brides no longer have to follow strict dress rules (who says a sequined ballgown won’t work for a backyard affair?), finding and securing the right location should be a top priority, says Alison Laesser-Keck, creative director of Alison Bryan Destinations. Because the reception dominates most couples’ budgets, it’s smart to get started pronto. “There’s a domino effect to wedding planning decisions,” explains Laesser-Keck. “Each choice is tied to the next one—and if one decision is off in some way it can throw things out of kilter in a major way.”

ren’s turn to pick up the phone—to find out why the limo hadn’t arrived to take her to the church. “Someone did finally suggest that I ask one of my bridesmaids to field the calls, but I wish I’d asked someone to do this sooner,” she says. THE TAKEAWAY Engvall says she encourages her brides to keep cell phones out of sight the entire day. For brides who haven’t opted for a wedding coordinator, she suggests giving a family member or member of the wedding party a list of all the vendors, with phone numbers and email addresses, as well as a timeline for the day. Inform all of your vendors whom you’ve designated as your point person for the day, she adds.

I’d get personal recommendations before hiring a vendor. Diann Giannosa took her time before making even one call to prospective vendors. “I read articles and web reviews, and really

Even better, the club had an on-site event planner. “The planner was one reason we booked that venue,” says Dean, who lives in Philadelphia. “But she quit her job two months before our wedding.” A new planner came on board, but she was “totally ➺

I’d reapply my lipstick. “It’s a little thing that still drives me crazy: I never reapplied lipstick after the ceremony!” says Madeleine Chenot Pennington, who hosted a vintage-Hollywood bash in Waco, TX. “Now, when I look back at pictures, my un-glossed lips are all I see.” THE TAKEAWAY Bare lips, shiny foreheads, smeared mascara—makeup mishaps are all too common, says LaesserKeck. “The day is just going to fly by and it’s natural for brides to forget about this detail.” She suggests handing your maid of honor a small pouch that contains your lipstick and some blotting papers, a stain removing wipe, and a dryer sheet to handle static. “Ask her to remind you after the

In the interest of saving time, Kilpatrick and her new husband hired a limo to gather them from their reception at 3 a.m. for an early morning flight to Jamaica. “Big mistake,” she says. “It felt like we missed an entire day because we were so exhausted.” THE TAKEAWAY Besides needing some rest, Engvall says it’s worth delaying your travels for a day or two to have some quiet time to unwind and spend more time with parents or other close family members. “Most couples appreciate not having to think about packing for a big vacation while they’re also worrying about everything that needs to get done for the wedding.” 

A FINAL THOUGHT There’s always going to be one thing that’s not completely perfect,” says Alison Bryan’s Laesser-Keck. “But that doesn’t mean that the decision you made was bad. So rather than get stuck on that one thing, just let it go and remember how amazing the day was. You’ll look back and you won’t have any regrets.

I’d DIY in advance. Having worked in the catering business, Sarah Kilpatrick had a firm grasp of what’s needed to pull off a smooth reception for 350 guests. She carried this organizational style over to other aspects of her wedding, which took place in Wheeling, WV, working closely with several vendors. Two things she did decide to DIY though, were creating the ceremony programs and crafting ribbon wands. “The final week before our wedding was pretty stress free, thanks to my many check-off lists,” says Kilpatrick. “But knowing that I had to get so many wands made and also put together the programs is something I wish I’d gotten out of the way sooner.” THE TAKEAWAY DIY-ing favors or other decor elements can help save money, says

Laesser-Keck. But adjust your timeline so that everything’s ready to go a couple of weeks in advance. “And definitely enlist the help of close friends and family members. Handmade touches are wonderful, but be realistic about what you can pull off,” she says. “You want those days leading up to your wedding to be easy.”

THE TAKEAWAY On-site planners do shoulder a lot of the reception details, streamlining the process for many couples, but keep in mind that you’re signing a contract with the venue and not the planner, says Engvall. To give you more peace of mind, make sure you’re meeting with the person who’ll be on duty the day of your reception, pose a few “what-if ” scenarios (including any future on-site renovations) and make sure you’re comfortable with their answers. And definitely read the fine print in all of your contracts before signing.

I’d give the photographer more direction. A pale pucker isn’t the only thing Chenot Pennington would re-do. She also wishes she’d prepared a shot list for her photographer. “I absolutely loved my photographer, but so many pictures from the ceremony were taken from a balcony when I was hoping for more close-up shots,” THE TAKEAWAY “A photographer doesn’t know what a bride wants unless the bride tells her,” says wedding photographer Laura Yang. That’s where a detailed shot list comes in. Keep in mind that lighting and setting also play a role. “If a bride loves the sun-splashed, airy images she saw on her photographer’s site she can’t plan her own wedding inside a dark hotel ballroom and expect her photographer to produce the same look,” Yang says.

MAKE ARRANGEMENTS to spend the night before the wedding at a hotel near your venue. This gives you a chance to have some much-needed alone time on the morning before the ceremony. A little bit of solitude will make the upcoming celebration that much sweeter. HOP INTO A BUBBLE BATH with a book. The warm water will soothe the aches after all those hours in high heels, and a novel offers a mental mini-vacation. Read only the first few chapters and save the rest for the plane ride to your honeymoon destination.

Whether it’s a moment of Zen by your lonesome or happy hour with the girls, every bride needs a few strategies to step out of the spotlight and enjoy the moment.

LOAD UP YOUR IPOD with a “Wedding Countdown” playlist to keep you energized and positive. Think of this as your emotional pacifier—it’s basically impossible to be in a bad mood while lip-syncing to “Uptown Funk.” If all else fails, break out the heavy artillery: ABBA and old-school Britney Spears. SET ASIDE FIVE MINUTES every day for some “lite yoga.” Minneapolis-based yoga instructor Catherine Justice recommends the following visualization exercise: Sit cross-legged on the floor with your back against a wall in a cool, quiet room. Send out kind thoughts to someone you love deeply, someone you’re having conflict or emotional difficulty with—and yourself. “Your wedding is exciting, but it’s also stressful,” Catherine says. “While you’re trying to accommodate everyone else’s needs, remember to also take care of yourself.” “WINE DOWN” WITH YOUR BFFS. Negotiate a deal that you like. The closer you are to the

wedding date (six months or less), the likelier it is that the band leader will work on your terms. Find out if one or two musicians can perform for the ceremony or cocktail hour as well. If your band has a singer who also plays an instrument, you’ll save money. And remember: You don’t need more than one of each instrument. ➺

The labor that goes into creating flowers out of sugar ups the price of the cake. If you like fruit fillings, think seasonal. Strawberries can cost three times as much when served out of season. If your baker charges more for multiple cake or filling flavors, limit yourself to your favorite.

“I

see our newest line as an evolution,” says Hervé Moreau, artistic director of Pronovias. With headquarters based in Barcelona and designs made exclusively in-house, the company takes pride in upholding traditional dressmaking techniques while continuously innovating on the fabric and design front. Every gown is handcrafted down to the last detail. “The methods we use to create custom patterns are what make our designs unique,” Moreau says. The 2020 collection explores new patterns, textiles and colors. Focusing on movement, the Atelier team opted for textured fabrics that would allow for more comfort and less weight. “We develop materials exclusively for our Atelier Pronovias line,” Moreau tells us— including unexpected sparkle or subtle sheen using metallic yarns. And luxurious new laces—a brand staple—abound. But before the fabrics are made, the process begins with a sketch, notes Moreau. “The silhouette in my mind gets on paper and the details are added one by one so that the stylists and patternmakers understand the vision.” From there, patterns are developed and toiles (a test garment in muslin) are created. The design team reviews each sample and discusses any necessary adjustments. “This is where the piece comes to life,” says Moreau. Once completed, the design and silhouette of each toile is checked against the original sketch. “The craftswomen begin to cut and sew the dress,” Moreau says. The intricacies of placing appliqués (something Hervé has an innate talent for) and hand-beading are the final steps in the construction of a truly breathtaking Pronovias gown.

uring a weekend getaway to Park City, Utah, Jason popped the question in front of a hill with large signage “PC” for Park City, or in their case the future “Patty Clark.” The Miami residents spent the next year planning their ideal fall wedding. They chose Beaver Creek, Colorado, as their bigday location since the bride grew up visiting the resort village with her family, making it a sentimental spot to create even more loving memories. Beano’s Cabin, a secluded, luxurious restaurant nestled in the mountains, was the site for the rustic-styled ceremony and reception. “The venue offered a spectacular backdrop, an intimate setting and wonderful food,” Patty says. The picturesque alpine landscape was inspiration for the event’s overall organic decor and earthy greenery in hopes of bringing the outdoors inside. To honor the region’s ancestral history, the newlyweds also included Native American-themed elements in their celebration. For example, their wedding officiant, who has familial ties to the Navajo tribe, incorporated unique traditions, like playing his Native American flute at the beginning of the ceremony. Dinner took place inside Beano’s Cabin while a connected tent enclosed the dance floor. Patty said, “The love and positivity was truly palpable during each and every moment of the celebration, which quite simply made for one of the best days of our lives.” — Kate Watson

ood trucks, cooking shows and celebrity chefs are as common to gastronomy-loving travelers these days as burgers and fries. But for those of us who aren’t so hip to the nose-to-tail jargon, ordering at a fancy resort restaurant can be a bit—dare I say— stomach turning. Since I’m more of a comfort-food girl myself (did someone say French fries?), I got a few top chefs to dish on getting the best meal on your honeymoon.

If you’re anything like me, you focus on the girl in the cutest outfit at the store and scope out what she’s got in her hands. Then you head straight for the rack that offers her selection. The same approach works at restaurants, says James. Look around the dining room and see what other patrons are savoring. And feel free to ask. I was approached by a fellow diner at Jaleo, a Spanish restaurant helmed by superstar chef José

love it so much, I’m not going to write about it.” That’s a phrase that travel editors whisper to themselves when they discover a spot that is so special, so quiet and just so perfect that a simple mention of its existence to others may mar the destination’s unique appeal. For decades, that statement slipped out over cocktails, during transatlantic flights or press gatherings about a spit of sand located off the northern coast of Quintana Roo, the Mexican state that’s home to Cancun and the Riviera Maya. And from those mentions and the occasionally shared photo, Isla Holbox, an island of fewer than 2,000 inhabitants, moved to the top of my travel list. My ultimate travel peeve is when I check into a hotel and someone says “welcome home.” It isn’t my house, which is part of the reason why it is so fun to stay there. But checking into Punta Caliza does sort of feel like you’ve arrived at a place so welcoming that it can only be equated with home, a super-chic high-design home, but one nonetheless. The main reason is that the 12room hideaway is helmed by a family of artists and designers. A brother and sister team run the day-to-day operations and much of the staff is family or childhood friends, as is the case with the property’s chef. SUN, SAND, SEA, REPEAT The marquee attraction of Isla Holbox is its lack of offerings. There are no large hotels nor is there a boisterous bar scene, and the island is famous for not having paved roads. The vibe here is barefoot and dressed-down with lazing on the beach, strolling the sandy “streets” or biking to the mangrove preserve being popular activities. Here lunches are long, lingering affairs that most often happen on the sand. Then it’s off to sway in hammocks that hover over the crystalline waters. Those looking for a bit more to do walk to the far end of the island to explore Mosquito Beach. The protected expanse is a mangrove wonder filled with all manner of bird life and yes, plenty of mosquitoes. A handful of tour operators, offering snorkeling and swimming with whale sharks, sit on a street at the base of the town plaza.

SUNDOWNERS

NIGHT LIGHTS Once the sun sets, the entirety of the island (with the exception of the main plaza and its surrounding streets) is enveloped in complete darkness. Offshore, however, is another story. The waters become aglow with the phenomenon called bioluminescence, the emission of light from marine invertebrates. Outfitters lead private kayak tours to discover the aqua fireflies. Note: Although it can be spied all year, some seasons are more impressive than others, and weather can impact sightings. Ask about visibility before booking. 

TRAVEL TIP: Since you’ll be essentially stepping back in time, you’ll need to bring Mexican cash. Not many places accept credit cards and the single ATM in town has been known to run out of money. There is an exchange office on the plaza. CHEERS A typical island snack, lunch or dinner.

As is common in beach destinations, sunset on this tiny island is an event. Folks flock to the Hotel Zone beaches and rooftop bars to take in the evening spectacular and toast the close of a perfect beach day with a chilled mezcal. Los Nubes, set on the edge of the dense mangrove expanse, is hands-down the best perch from which to enjoy the natural show. The restaurant at this palaparoofed property juts over the Caribbean Sea, affording unbeatable vistas of the water and Holbox itself. Stay for dinner and savor fresh seafood in traditional Yucatan presentations.
