ANSWERS
A
& Q
Wedding
Straight talk, smart solutions by Mary Clarke, Editor in Chief
Q A
Not at all. Surely you already have enough names on your guest list without adding the parents of your entire wedding squad. There’s absolutely no need to invite them unless you or your partner have an especially close relationship with some of the parents.
RECEIVING LINE LIMIT Is it necessary to have a receiving line? It seems hopelessly outdated.
Q A
A traditional receiving line is not necessary, but you and your partner should take time to greet all of your guests. Stop by every table at the reception and thank your friends and family members for helping you celebrate. They will appreciate the opportunity for a little one-on-one time with you and your beloved to extend their congratulations and offer you their best wishes.
SITE SEARCH We haven’t booked a reception venue yet. What are some key things to keep in mind?
Q A
First, make sure that whatever site you choose suits your wedding style. For example, couples who want a big, formal wedding may opt for a grand, opulent ballroom while others may be going for something more low key. For them, something cozy and intimate would be a better fit. There are tons of options to consider, from country farms and garden
12 BRIDALGUIDE.COM March/April 2023
settings to sophisticated city settings such as a loft or art gallery. Once you’ve determined your own personal style you’ll be better able to narrow down your choices to find a site that’s totally you. There are also a plethora of details to be aware of when you visit various venues. The room should be big enough for the number of guests, and the dance floor should be an adequate size and well situated. Is there decent space for a band or DJ? Are there enough electrical outlets to accommodate all their needs? Make sure there is plenty of parking and that the air conditioning or heating are in good working order. Check the restrooms, too, and find out if another wedding is going to be held at the same time on the premises (you may prefer more exclusivity). Ask to see the venue’s insurance and health department certificates to confirm they’re up to date and ask if there’s insurance in place in case someone is injured on the premises. You’ll need to know what the reception package includes, such as gratuities for the maître d’, wait staff and bartenders, and perhaps the inclusion of a wedding cake and basic decorations. And ask if any extra fees are required for valet parking, coat check and restroom attendants. One last thing, in light of the many weddings that had to be postponed due to Covid-19, make sure you are aware of your site’s postponement or cancellation policies. Discuss the last possible date for a postponement and what the financial repercussions are. Can you apply your current deposit to your postponed
wedding date and will your payment schedule in your current contract still apply? Take your time, prepare a list of questions, get the answers and don’t rush into a decision. Remember, though, popular sites do get booked early on. ON THE MENU My partner and I are trying not to blow the budget, but everywhere we go the catering costs for the reception are so high. What can we do to save money?
Q
A
First, start with the guest list. See if you can pare down. The more guests you have, the heftier your catering bill will be. As for specifics, offer a sparkling or white wine in place of champagne for the toast and cut back on the number of courses served. Forgo a multi-course meal and instead offer a salad, an entrée and the wedding cake for dessert. And instead of pricey hard liquor, provide beer and wine plus one specialty drink. Ask your caterer for suggestions. He or she can recommend less expensive menu options for the cocktail hour and reception to help keep you on budget. ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. And send your planning questions to us at mail@bridalguide.com.

Wedding Dress Shopping
101
CONGRATS, YOU’RE ENGAGED! You’ve probably been dreaming of this day for a long time — with good reason! There’s no greater feeling than trying on a wedding gown and seeing yourself as a bride for the very first time. Read on for everything you need to know about shopping for your wedding dress.
Choose Your Stores
Brides should begin shopping for their gowns 10-14 months ahead of their big day. Look up your favorite designers online to see which stores near you carry their dresses. A traditional bridal salon offers a large selection of reputable designers and styles, whereas a designer’s store or showroom is dedicated to their specific brand.
Bring These Important Items
It’s a good idea to bring a strapless bra and a pair of shoes with the heel height you’d like to wear on your big day.
Communicate With Your Consultant A bridal consultant cannot read your mind, so be vocal about what you’re
looking for, give honest opinions, and tell her if you love a dress or not. You’ll be making both of your jobs easier. Not sure? Bring trusted family and friends—your “YES” moment will be that much sweeter!
Make the Dress Your Own
The dress you try on in the store is just a starting point. Want to add a sleeve? Lower the back? Elongate the train? At a traditional bridal salon, you can work directly with the dress designer and an in-house seamstress to customize your gown and turn your dream into a reality.
Ask About Special Pricing
If budget is a concern, there are many ways to shop smart at a local salon. Many brick-and-mortar stores offer
discounts at designer trunk shows, and host sample sales annually.
Inquire About Delivery Dates
Don’t forget to ask your consultant about delivery dates. Due to supply chain issues, your dress may take longer to arrive. Short on time? Many bridal salons have off-the-rack sections where you can select a gorgeous gown and bring it home the same day.
Add on Accessories
Once you say yes to the dress, your consultant will help style your look with accessories like veils, headpieces, jewelry and belts. This is an important step as it helps you envision how you’ll look on your wedding day!

Take inspiration from these creative forces as we spotlight the best in the business in our ongoing series. by Carol Straley
MCKENZI TAYLOR founder, Electric Sugar Elopements
Not every couple wants a traditional “white wedding.” That’s what elopement and micro-wedding planner extraordinaire McKenzi Taylor, founder of Las Vegasbased Cactus Collective Weddings, discovered back in 2020, when requests for darkly romantic goth-themed weddings and rebel rock ’n’ roll nuptials began to roll in.“We decided to create a second brand, Electric Sugar Elopements, to accommodate hundreds of couples who wanted something different.” McKenzi attributes this shift to the wilder side in part to the pandemic of 2020. “People have become “I think the pandemic gave people more permission to do bolder in how they wish to express themselves.” what they want. It’s a ‘life is short. I am going to do this my way’ feeling that we’ve been seeing a lot more of.” After a year spent putting together the right team of vendors and photographers, and scoping out the best venues to set the scene, whether for delicious decadence or rock star glamour, Electric Sugar Elopements officially launched in early 2022. To echo their website, these are weddings to die for!
Rock-star decor
Who Are the Electric Sugar Elopement Couples?
• “Couples who favor an alternative personal aesthetic, whether it is body modification like piercings and tattoos; couples who are gender fluid; couples who are into a more rock ’n’ roll or edgier lifestyle; a lot of couples who are into fantasy and cosplay as well. It’s also that person who is badass on the inside, but doesn’t necessarily get the opportunity to express that side of themselves in their everyday life You don’t have to be outrageous to crave an alternative wedding theme. It could simply be about having an outrageous and unforgettable day.” “I love helping couples create their own unique elopement vision.”

Black lace and blood-red blooms.
“You can still have traditional moments like cake and champagne,” McKenzi says.
Dream Themes
• “Beyond goth, themes tend to lean towards the whimsical and campy, rock ’n’ roll, and from ’70s or ’50s-inspired and vintage themes to the sensual 1700s or 1800s period.” • “Gothic Steam Punk is another popular theme. It’s a specific style that falls into the Gothic aesthetic, but with a futuristic vibe—an interesting blend of retro-futuristic, tech and fantasy.”
Mixing It Up
• “Goth and alternative weddings are all about unapologetic self-expression, so blending traditional wedding elements with goth or alternative themes is perfectly fine.” • “You can still play pop or dance music if you choose, and have traditional moments like throwing the bridal bouquet, and a cake and champagne ceremony.”

• “Our wedding photographers typically have to shoot a bit differently from a technical standpoint, so it is better if your photographer specializes in a darker mood photography and they know how to work with underexposed lighting, as well as special effects in their post-production process.” • “Keep in mind that the film look is also making a comeback. There are very few photographers that shoot well on film, but if you can find one, it’s great. Please make sure you find a photographer who isn’t scared to break the mold and experiment with set-ups and nontraditional lighting.”
Emotional Connections
• “We understand that romance means something different for every couple and we go above and beyond to make each couple’s vision a reality.” • “ESE is inclusive in that we encourage diversity and equity for all couples, regardless of gender, faith, personal style and lifestyle. ESE is quickly becoming known and loved as an outside-the-box wedding company.”
Looking Ahead
• “One thing we anticipate a lot more of in the coming year are more couples who are non-binary or outside the scope of traditional gender roles.” • “It’s fun to be fluid, flexible and open to new ideas. From a creative standpoint, that is very energizing for me, as well as for my vendors. Our clients continue to stretch the limits of our imagination.” ➺ 33

So in love.

PHOTOGRAPHY: (CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT
Donielle Warren’s love affair with wedding planning began back in 2004 with an internship for Elegant Events, a Philadelphia-based design and event planning company renowned for events “created out of love for helping others.” There she thrived under the tutelage of founder Sheila Corbett, who launched the company in 1997 to meet the increasing demand for professional wedding planners in the greater Philadelphia area. Beyond fulfilling her college course requirements, Donielle had found her destiny. And so upon graduating, she continued to follow her passion, planning exquisite weddings and special events for the company. At the same time, Donielle pursued a career in the corporate sphere, working as a project manager and team manager for an insurance company. Multitasking would ultimately serve her well when at last in 2015 Donielle took on ownership of Elegant Events, which celebrated the transition with a major rebranding on Valentine’s Day. Perfect timing for a self-described “hopeless romantic” (Donielle’s favorite movie is “P.S. I Love You”), who continues to share the love with every dream wedding she and her team create. Whether couples want an “enchanted island” wedding on a pristine white sand beach in the Caribbean, or to tap into the tradition of a timeless, intimate ceremony in a historic church, or go for the over-the-top splendor of an exuberant, three-day South Asian celebration, Donielle promises a wedding that will always be true to their vision, “never bland or boring.” Far from it!

• “We have a remarkable technique in which we customize a plan that is inclusive of our couple’s ideas and event aspirations.” • The planner should address etiquette and traditions, but also be willing to plan while carefully considering the couple’s distinctive requests, ensuring that everyone feels respected and honored and most importantly, that the couple is celebrated with love.
More Excitement Ahead
• “We were delighted to finally celebrate our rescheduled weddings in 2022 but as a result had to decline new inquiries from incredible couples. Our team is growing, and we’re excited to be available to plan and design with even more couples throughout 2023 and beyond!” • “Additionally, we have revamped our international wedding offerings, expanding our services into new markets.” 35

ou know you need a great venue, cake designer, florist, caterer, DJ and photographer. But other than help you pull off the wedding of your dreams, do you really know what you need each of them to do? Maybe if you’re an event planner by trade, but probably not if you’re like the rest of us. The fact is you’re not only taking on the role of brideto-be, you’ve just become the operations manager of what will essentially become a small village for a day. Exciting, yes. But also more than a little overwhelming. Take a deep breath, we’ve done the initial hard work for you. We asked a few of our favorite wedding designers to share the top questions every bride should be asking each of her vendors before signing the dotted line.
What to ask your site manager “So many points about your event begin and end with the space or location you choose,” says Amy Jones, owner of Amy Champagne Events in Milford, Connecticut. “It’s key to know exactly what to expect from your venue.” • How many people can you accommodate and how long will I have use of the event space?
• What are the per-person charges? And are there additional service charges or other fees such as gratuities or overtime costs?
• Do prices differ based on the time of day and/or day of the week? What is your payment and cancellation policy?
• What time can my vendors arrive to set up/clean up? Can any rentals
What to ask your florist “The flowers are often the first thing your guests will notice,” says New York Citybased wedding-planning and lifestyle expert Shawn Rabideau (who began his wedding career as a florist). “What florists do impacts the entire look of your event, not to mention your budget.”
or decor be dropped off the day before and picked up the day after?
• Are tables, linens, etc. provided or will I need to rent them elsewhere? • Am I able to use an outside caterer and/or cake maker? Is there an extra cost to do so?
• Do you have a signature design style? Will you be doing the arrangements yourself or using another floral designer?
• Do you offer specific arrangements or can centerpieces, bouquets, etc. be customized?
• What bloom recommendations can you suggest that fit within my budget and my theme/ color story? What flowers will be in season for my wedding?
• Have you done any weddings at my venue? • What can you suggest to help me get the most from my budget?
• And are there extra fees for containers or other vessels?
• Is there a price difference between similar blooms? (Ideally you should see an itemized price list of flowers under consideration.)

• Can you provide other decor, such as trees,
THE FIRST QUESTION YOU’LL WANT TO ASK ANY VENDOR IS WHETHER OR NOT THEY’RE AVAILABLE ON YOUR DATE, BUT THAT’S NOT THE ONLY ESSENTIAL INFO YOU’LL BE GATHERING.
• Can we bring in our own wine, beer, champagne or other alcohol? Is there a corkage fee?
• Are there any restrictions regarding music? Is there an on-site technician to help with any lighting or sound problems that may crop up?
• Is there parking on site or do you offer valet parking? If not, where can guests park?

Will you pick up any vases, etc. after the ceremony, or is that my responsibility?
• How do you meet the technical needs of other vendors, such as a DJ, caterer or videographer? (Is there an on-site technician, for example.) ➺ 37
What to ask your caterer If the caterer’s food tastes great you’re done, right? Not quite, says Napa, California–based event designer Sasha Souza. It’s not enough that they can prepare delicious meals, she says—they also have to be able to handle the size and scope of your event and have fantastic service. • What foods do you specialize in? Do you have set menu options or can you create a custom or themed menu? • What would you recommend given my budget, guest count and event theme? • How do you handle tastings? (Ideally each dish should be presented as your guests will see them, and you and your groom shouldn’t have to take a bite from the same serving.) • What’s the price difference between a buffet and a sit-down meal, and between passed appetizers and appetizer stations? How are your fees broken down? • Do you provide linens, utensils, serving table decor, etc.? How about tables and chairs? What colors and
styles do you offer? • Will you be overseeing the meal service at the reception, or do you have an on-site manager to coordinate these things? (If the caterer won’t be present, it’s always a good idea to ask to meet whomever will be in charge of your day ahead of time.) • Is there a cut-off date for making menu changes? • Are you licensed to serve alcohol? (If not you may need to hire a separate bar service.) • How much do you charge for vendor meals? (Musicians and photographers get hungry, too!) Can leftovers be wrapped for guests or donated? • What’s the ratio of servers to guests? How will servers be dressed?
What to ask your cakemaker
• What are your specialties
• What icing options do you
and/or top flavors and fillings? Can you do gluten-free, organic, or vegan cakes? • Can I view examples of cakes you’ve baked and decorated? (Many newer cake makers may have photos in their portfolios of cakes they assisted on, but you want to see what they’ve done themselvesfrom start to finish.) • Do you work with set designs or can you design a custom cake to match my theme? • Can you outline your pricing fees? For example, do you charge for a cake tasting, are there additional fees for cake stands, cutting knives, toppers, etc.? • Will you work with a recipe I’ve provided? If so, will there be an additional cost?
recommend for the cake style I’m looking for? • If I want fresh flowers on my cake will you collaborate with my florist to include blooms that coordinate with my floral decor? • How far in advance is the cake actually made? How is it stored and transported? • Will you preserve the top tier of my wedding cake for my first anniversary?
FOR OUTDOOR SPACES • How will my cake hold up to the elements? An unprotected table won’t be able to shield your wedding cake from stiff ocean breezes, high temps or humidity. You’ll want to know how your baker handles outdoor venues.

ALWAYS ASK VENDORS, “WHAT’S YOUR BACKUP PLAN SHOULD YOU FALL ILL OR OTHERWISE NOT BE AVAILABLE?” AS TO THE VENUE ITSELF: “WHAT’S PLAN B IF THE WEATHER TAKES A BAD TURN?”
PHOTOGRAPHY: PHOTOGRAPHYBYPAULINA.COM
“You want a ‘wow’ factor here!” says Rabideau. “And that can happen if you’re clear with your cake designer about your wishes, and listen to their ideas, too.” Taste and presentation are only part of the equation. You also need to know if they can handle the specifics of your wedding.
KEY QUESTIONS THAT APPLY TO EVERY VENDOR Put these six important questions at the top of your list.
1
How long have you been in business and how many weddings do you do each year?
2
Can you share recent references and examples of your work? (In the case of your venue, be sure to ask to see recent pictures of weddings in the space you’re considering.)
3
Do you have liability insurance? (If not, you’ll very likely want to take out your own policy to cover unexpected mishaps such as a guest tripping over the photographer’s tripod and getting hurt, or to repair or replace rented linens that were scorched by the votives in your floral centerpiece.)
4 5
What’s your payment structure and cancellation policy?
What’s your backup plan should you fall ill or otherwise not be available at the time of the wedding? In the case of the venue site, what’s their plan if the weather takes a bad turn or another unforeseeable circumstance occurs?
6
What are your travel and/or overtime fees? (Unexpected travel fees may crop up if your ceremony and reception are in different locations or if you’re hiring out-of-town vendors.)
What to ask your photographer & videographer The images of your special day are so important, “yet many couples only focus on the pricing, or base their choice on portfolio alone,” says Amy Jones. But there are many more details to focus on. • Do you specialize in weddings? (You don’t need a weddings-only shooter, but you do want someone who’s comfortable with both the ceremony and the reception.) • How would you describe your photography style? And can I see a portfolio of your work— beyond what’s featured on your website? • How/when do we go about creating a shot list? What information do you need from me before the event? • What is your working style on the day of the wedding? And how many shooters will cover the day? • How much time do you need to set up? And for how long will you shoot? • What type of equipment do you use? Do you have backup equipment on hand? • What’s the length of time for delivery of proofs? And what is the ordering process? • Can you provide me with a detailed price sheet? What do packages include? • Do you have a minimum number of hours? Will you stay if my event is running
FOR VIDEOGRAPHERS • How long is your editing process? • Is there a cost for a video “tease”? (This is typically a one-minute video short to share on social media.)
What to ask your musicians or dj “DJs and musicians set the tempo for your party,” says Shawn Rabideau. “You want to make sure you find the right professionals who can keep your guests entertained.” • What genres can you cover? Do you

late and what are your overtime fees? • Will my wedding be your only job on that day? If not, what are the hours I can count on and what happens if you can’t make it to my wedding?
have any particular specialties? • Do you have a video from a previous wedding you performed at that I can view? And where can we see you perform live? • Can my fiancé and I give you “doplay” and “no-play” lists? • Do you have ideas to encourage more guests to dance? (For example, are they willing and able to deviate from their set list to try and energize the crowd?) What’s your game plan if you notice guests aren’t dancing? • Do you provide the sound equipment or does it have to be rented elsewhere? And do you have backup
equipment should something go wrong? • Do you have a technician who stays on site if there’s a problem? (This is especially important if you have an outside event, or are booking a venue that doesn’t typically handle weddings.) • Do you provide any lighting design? What kind of space/staging requirements do you have? • Does your pricing include set-up and breakdown? How much time do you need for set-up, breaks, breakdown? • How many breaks do you need and for how long? Will you play recorded music during breaks? • What will you be wearing—can I make specific attire requests? 39

should set aside 10 to 15 percent of her overall budget for her dress. However, that should be adjusted based upon the importance of the dress to the bride. One bride’s attitude may be, “I’m only going to wear it for five hours, so I don’t want to spend a lot,” while another will say, “I want everyone to remember how fabulous I looked, so it’s of utmost importance.” You have to know how you feel in order to set your price point.
BG: What is the worst dress-shopping mistake a bride can make? MU: Not having a budget when you start is a huge mistake—and the most common one. Another big problem is not realizing that the dress isn’t the only thing you have to pay for. Headpieces and veils and jewelry are part of the equation. And don’t forget the extra fee for alterations. Your dress size will also affect the price of your gown; some designers offer up to size 40 BRIDALGUIDE.COM March/April 2023
16 without extra cost, but otherwise it can cost 10 to 20 percent more.
BG: If a bride comes to Kleinfeld with a photo of a dress that she can’t afford, what will the sales consultant do? MU: Our consultants try never to go over a bride’s budget, and 90 percent of brides respect that. But there are always one or two who insist on trying on that $20,000 gown. Then it becomes very difficult for her to consider anything else! It’s as if you tour a two-million-dollar house and then you look at one for one-third that much—trying on a dress you can’t afford is unrealistic and disrespectful of whoever may be planning to pay for it.
BG: What’s your advice on customizing a gown? MU: Almost every bride wants something done—more beads, a longer train, a sweetheart neckline, straps, a bolero jacket—because she wants to “make it her own.” It’s natural to want to be unique, but do be sure to figure customized work into your budget.
BG: Beading and other details will
up the cost, so it makes sense to go for a simpler dress. But what if a bride dreams of bling? MU: Compromise. Consider a belt— that’s the simplest way—or get a headpiece with bling or some dazzling jewelry. A dress doesn’t have to be the most expensive one to be beautiful.
BG: How can friends and family help—or hinder—your attempts to stay on the financial track? MU: I’ve seen a bride’s friends or family members pull dresses that are not right for her style or her budget. Only bring people with you who truly understand your budget and lifestyle.
BG: What is your best piece of advice for brides? MU: There is nothing worse than when wedding guests look at the bride and ask each other, “Who is that?” When this happens, it usually means the bride is wearing too much makeup or the wrong hairstyle or she’s chosen the wrong dress. My advice is to be yourself—the best, most beautiful version that you can possibly be for your big day.

Q&A
NEED TO KNOW
When it comes to weddings, everyone has questions, both couples and their planners, says celebrations expert David Tutera. MY QUESTIONS What kind of wedding would you like to have?
PHOTOGRAPHY: (TOP) VICTORIA ANGELA PHOTOGRAPHY
The answer I often get is “We want a unique, different, creative wedding” —which is not the answer I am looking for. Every couple wants something unique; I want to see how far outside the box the couple wants to go. The style and personality they want to come through are important, but I need to understand how far they’re willing to venture—and how much they’re willing to break with the formula of a traditional wedding.
What’s your color scheme? Surprise: A lot of my couples don’t have a ready answer. Think about specific colors, preferably bringing in fabric swatches, paint chip colors, screenshots—anything that depicts what you’re envisioning. Ideally, I like to see three color choices per palette: a primary color (your
main color), a secondary color (your accent color) and a third color I call it the finish color: silver, crystal, copper or gold).
How would you like to infuse your personalities into your celebration? I hope the couple answers by telling me more about who they are—the foods they love, their cultural backgrounds, stories about their relationship, etc. The reason I ask this is so I can tell the couple’s story. The more personality and detail in your wedding, the more your wedding becomes your wedding.
What style do you live your life in? Are you Modern? Classic? Eclectic? Traditional? Retro? I ask this question because the answer gives me a sense of who you are as a couple, as well as the way you like to live.
What style would you like your wedding to be executed in? The style a couple wants for their wedding may not be the style they live their lives by.
It’s often more of a fantasy they want to live out for that day.
MY COUPLES’ QUESTIONS How can I make my wedding different and unique? It isn’t about trying to find a unique theme or concept that’s different because that doesn’t necessarily make sense for who you are as a couple. Instead, aim for a wedding that breaks the mold of the traditional formula and timeline that everyone else follows. Have some interactive participation so your guests can’t predict what’s around the corner, and they leave feeling like they experienced—experience is they key word here—something unique.
Do I have to do all the expected formalities (for example, first dance as a couple, father-daughter dance, motherson dance, the bouquet toss, cake cutting)? You don’t have to do any of it! It’s your wedding and it is up to you when it comes to these traditions.
However, when making these decisions, take a moment to consider whether you will later regret not including them (e.g. having that special moment with your dad, your mom, etc.).
Should we have an afterparty or a separate late-night lounge area? Neither. Both break the energy and flow of the celebration, and you can lose guests that way. Keep everyone within the four walls of one space and try not to spread out too much for too long a period of time. Instead, opt for switching up the environment over the course of the evening. Have a lounge area within your reception space, then change up the entertainment, music and lighting to create a new atmosphere and keep the party going strong.
What are the season’s top color trends? Rather than go with the trends, pick colors that speak to you. If you follow your heart and stay true to what’s meaningful and special, a beautiful wedding will unfold. The truth to your wedding being your wedding is you being you!

office. Don’t split up groups, says Syd Sexton, CEO at Catering By Design in Denver, CO. “If you can invite your office gang, great. But if not, don’t invite only one of them.”
THE DRINKS
5. notes that you don’t need to fill every corner of your venue with flowers for a lovely look. Work with your florist to use the freshest, in-season blooms to their advantage, then fill in the rest with budget-friendly candles or greenery. The look will still be beautiful. If you just adore flowers, check out botanical gardens in your area— you’ll have a bounteous backdrop of blooms at your disposal.
THE DESSERT TABLE
2. THE GUEST LIST
1.
Keeping your guest list trim is of the utmost importance. But don’t worry about offending people by not inviting them. Of course you wouldn’t leave out your nearest and dearest, and just think of all those people who’d probably be flattered to be invited but not bothered if they’re not. Your best bet is to make some rules. That is, first cousins, but not second. Spouses and live-in or serious partners, but not dates. Your boss, but not your whole
Unless you’re having a dessert reception, don’t go overboard on sweets. Wedding cake is so spectacular that offering a dessert buffet, a crêpes suzette station and mini ice cream cones is just excessive. THE FLOWERS
3.
The first time you gazed upon your reception site, you saw veritable fields of flowers, right? It’s no surprise, though, that piles and piles of blooms can ratchet up your costs quickly. Sexton

Feel free to skip the champagne toast and just use whatever wine you have on the table. Create a bar you can afford, whether that means only beer, wine and soft drinks; a signature cocktail and wine with dinner; or lessexpensive liquors for mixed drinks. Keep it simple: The more varieties of liquor involved in assembling the drink, the more you will pay. THE 5-COURSE MEAL
6.
We know—you’re worried about guests going home hungry. This concern has led many couples to go down the path of offering too much—up to seven courses—
COCKTAIL HOUR
4.
Don’t overload guests with everything from sushi bars to hors d’oeuvres to pasta and carving stations. By keeping it short and sweet, you’ll ensure that you’ll need less food. Hand-pass hors d’oeuvres instead of having stations. This limits

the amount of food you’ll need. Stick with just enough food to keep guests from getting too tipsy too early on, advises Meghan Walls, owner of Meghan Walls Events in Hoboken, NJ. “A pretty display of cheese, fruit and crackers will do just fine.”
and paying too much for it. If you’re looking to cut costs, “eliminate one course, and just serve an appetizer and an entrée,” says Walls. Or instead of offering chicken, steak or salmon entrées, assemble a plate that combines, say, a few grilled shrimp and medallions of beef, plus a creative array of vegetables (you may save 40 percent or more).
THE INVITATIONS
9.
Engraved and letterpress invitations are pricey. Choosing an unusual color, paper or design may also raise your costs. If you’re a DIY-er, design and make your own invitations by hand or digitally, using high-quality paper stock. TRANSPORTATION
10.
White limos cost more than black or silver ones, so cross white ones off your list. If you do hire a limousine, don’t have the car that took you to the ceremony wait for you all day—book another to come for you later (you’ll save on hourly rates).
get a big price reduction, you may get some extras thrown in.” And, if you are willing to be flexible with days of the week (a Friday or Sunday, say), times of day or seasons, you can often work out a much better deal. Remember: Vendors want your business as much as you want a nice wedding.

12. THE CAKE
7.
A five-tier tower covered with elaborate sugarpaste flowers, butterflies and bows? The more elaborate the design, the higher the cost. Consider serving a smaller, tiered display cake and supplementing with a sheet cake that is brought out after the official cake cutting. Or do less-pricey cupcakes in your wedding colors (always a big guest favorite!).
THE FAVORS
8.
“Unless the favor is food—like chocolates to eat right then—it’s an expense you can forgo,” says Walls, who also suggests making donations in guests’ names to charities as another option.
THE VENUE
11.
You’ve learned the price per person at your chosen venue, and it’s too high. Don’t worry—negotiate. Some brides are shy or they think this is tacky. “Uh-uh,” says Sexton. “In a tough economic climate, vendors expect it. Be honest about your budget, and ask, ‘What can you do for me with this amount?’ Even if you don’t
You need not make the rehearsal dinner a mini wedding by booking an expensive restaurant. “If you can, have it in the home of someone willing to host,” says Sexton. (Hint: Perhaps someone wants to make this their wedding gift to you!). “Do something casual, like a backyard barbecue or picnic. Or ask your wedding caterer if he or she is willing to cater it in a private home for a lower fee, as part of your wedding package.”
THE LINENS
13.
The standard white or off-white table coverings have kept their classic good looks. Perk up the tables with napkins tied with ribbons or rent stylish napkin rings.

THE FOOTWEAR
14.
Focus your energy and your money on your dress—not your shoes, advises Walls. “Why spend hundreds of dollars on footwear you’ll wear for a single day? Unless you have a short or tea-length dress, no one will see what’s going on below your ankles.” Find inexpensive (but comfortable) shoes that complement your gown, and leave it at that.
THE IMPRESSION
15.
It isn’t your job to dazzle your friends. “Just remember to take care of them,” says Walls. Be sure they have little amenities in their rooms, and that older guests don’t have far to walk. Take care not to have too long a time gap between ceremony and reception. Or consider this sweet finale: Leave milk and cookies for guests at the end of the night to make everyone feel loved. 43

DREAM THEMES 1. DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE BOLD. Los Angeles designer Wayne Gurnick had a bride wild for Alice in Wonderland. Jill planned a nautical-themed wedding for a couple that loved to sail. “For the cocktail hour, we had roving ‘cigarette girls’ offering vintage candy, as though guests were on the first-class deck. We flew flags, as if from the mast of a boat. And there
were lifesaver rings where the guests could pose for photos.” 5. LOOK FOR INSPIRATION IN THE . . .
For a bride and groom who were teachers, Tammy placed shiny fresh red apples in the centerpieces and mini pencils on the escort card table. For a race-car driving groom, Wayne created a purple-and-white checkered flag motif and used it as a border on the table numbers and escort cards. 6. SAY IT WITH FAVORS. Wayne had a couple from San Francisco and Los Angeles who gave guests a sweetly wrapped duo of their favorite San Francisco tea and L.A.-roasted coffee beans.

The stemware was Mexican blue glass, Spanish tiles served as escort cards, the centerpieces were set in rustic tin containers, and on the dance floor? Maracas, of course.

One of Tammy’s couples hired their parents’ favorite comedian to do a set during dinner. “He was cracking everyone up!” Tammy reports. 10. SAY IT WITH PICTURES. Plan a slideshow with snaps of you and your groom, or think even bigger and create a slideshow that features a shot of everyone in your wedding party, or each of your guests.

Jill had an Italian couple who served a pasta course—one heaping bowl of pasta for each table. 13. ANOTHER VARIATION? At a wedding with a groom from Mexico, guests received end-of-the-night Mexican hot chocolate and bags of churros. 14. BRING BACK MEMORIES OF THE RESTAURANT

A Joy Wallace Catering & Events will not only recreate your family recipes—they’ll also invite your relatives into the catering kitchen to make sure everything tastes exactly the way the family likes it. 16. DO YOU REALLY NEED A COCKTAIL
Is a sit-down dinner a wedding must? Sabdy says to plan the meal your way. A Cuban couple couldn’t wait to get the dancing started, so they skipped the cocktail hour altogether. Instead of passed hors d’oeuvres, guests were seated at the dinner table right away. There were nibbles on big lazy Susans for between dances, and when it was time for dinner, waiters cleared the lazy Susans and set the first course.

Girlie girls love the fluff of the peony, and free spirits swoon over fresh-from-the-meadow wildflowers. 27. LOOK FOR FLOWERS THAT REMIND YOU OF HOME. Arizona brides have been

STARRY NIGHT .Abigail Taylor Chase and Tyler Alexander Rubeor’s Madison, Wisconsin .wedding took center stage under a constellation of twinkling lights. PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAUL F. GERO PHOTOGRAPHY
ABIGAIL WASN’T EXPECTING A PROPOSAL FROM TYLER. “In fact, I was in the process of pre-heating the oven to cook us dinner,” she says. “When I turned around, he was down on one kn knee.” ee.” Law school (Abigail) and medical school (Tyler) found them in a long-distance relationship during the pandemic: not an optimal time for wedding planning. “I was studying in Madison, Wisconsin, so I was already familiar with the Overture Center,” Abigail says. The couple planned to use both the stage and the lobby, but at one point they were unsure if dancing would be restricted. That’s when they decided to book additional space in the Orpheum Theater, a venue right across the street “to give our guests and entertainers more space to dance, drink and enjoy the final hours of our wedding. Thankfully, most Covid restrictions were lifted by the time we had our big day,” says the bride. Bravo!

There was no official wedding palette because “I didn’t want anything too matchy-matchy,” Abigail says. 1 “My bridesmaids wore dove-grey Bhldn dresses, which looked great in both the ceremony space and the Overture Lobby.” 2 The couple opted for a sweet tiered cake—by Gigi’s Cupcakes— dressed in vari-textured frosting with floral accents. 3 The foil-stamped escort cards by Minted were white, grey and pink, each color representing a specific meal option. 4 Each guest received a custom cookie from Carl’s Cakes. 5 A bird’s-eye view of the Overture Lobby setting. 4

for arts sake
Stretching over 20 blocks and nearly 70 acres, the Dallas Arts District is a robust destination for all manner of artistic experiences. World renowned auditoriums such as the Meyerson Symphony Center and Winspear Opera House sit alongside powerhouse museum collections including those at the Dallas Museum of Art, Nasher Sculpture Centre and the Crow Collection of Asian Art, as well the locally focused performance spaces. The buildings themselves, some of which date to the 1890s, are also works of art. In fact, within the walkable enclave, four of the structures are Pritzker Prize laureates.

hic, modern, artistic: adjectives that not only describe newlyweds Stacia and Clif Thomas but also their chosen wedding location—the peerless Hall Arts Hotel in Dallas. The 11-story glass tower is filled with dynamic works exclusively commissioned for the 183-room hideaway. “I love art, and they had beautiful modern pieces all around the hotel,” explains Stacia who counts the Dallas Museum of Art as one of her favorite local attractions. The hotel is “absolutely gorgeous, also the staff was so warm and welcoming,” she says. “I was delighted how kind and accommodating they were. They really took care of our guests,” says the bride of her wedding reception location. The couple swapped vows across the street at a terrace space where, as at the hotel, they and their guests marveled at the unique visual attractions. The spark of love.

Steeped in pre-Columbian history, the Riviera Maya is rich with offerings. Tulum, an oceanfront ruins complex, and Chichen Itza, one of the largest Maya cities, are well-known for good reason—they are as fascinating as they are photogenic. The requirements for saying “I do” in Mexico are extensive. All couples must be 18 or older and not currently married. You’ll need to present a valid passport, tourist card (issued upon arrival), birth certificate, blood test results (done in Mexico), completed marriage application forms from the local registry and four witnesses. All foreign documents, with the exception of your passport, will need to be translated, apostilled and notarized. The couple, and their witnesses, must arrive in Mexico four business days before the wedding day for legal ceremonies.
“We hosted the welcome party as an upscale fiesta at the Beach Shack. We had a wonderful menu, live Flamenco guitar, bonfires, string lights, high-top tables, and excellent margaritas,” says Lacey. The couple was overjoyed to see their guests getting to know each other. “That’s the thing about a destination wedding, people are there to have fun,” she says. “Everyone was laughing, mixing, and having a beautiful time under the Mexico stars.
