Beaches is now offering live video stream service for purchase, so that brides and grooms can still share their wedding with those unable to travel at this time.
We’ve reduced the capacity of all our venues, indoors and out, putting more physical distance between wedding guests.
Rather than tables set for eight people, the same sized tables will only seat six guests. We’ve eliminated buffets and specialty food stations to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Plated dinners and all hors d’ouvres will be served by Beaches staff.

Q&A
ANSWERS
wedding
Straight talk, smart solutions by Diane Forden
Q
We’ve decided to have a very small wedding. What should we say if someone who is not on our guest list asks if they’re invited?
A
Springfield, Massachusetts
Just be gracious. Let them know you’re flattered they would like to attend but that you’ve planned an intimate celebration and unfortunately cannot ask as many guests as you would like. Especially now as more couples are choosing to have smaller gatherings they shouldn’t be surprised about your decision. You can elaborate further—the importance of following safety guidelines, limited space, budget constraints—or simply leave it at that. Most people are aware of how costly big weddings are, too, and will understand. BELATED THANKS
Q
It’s been five months since I attended a friend’s wedding and I haven’t received a thank-you note yet for my gift. Is this amount of time acceptable? As a bride-to-be when should I send out my thankAnn Arbor, Michigan yous?
A
Thank-you notes should be sent within three months after the wedding. It may be an oversight on your friend’s part or perhaps she’s simply overwhelmed by the task. If you find yourself in the same position, you should still send your notes no matter how many months have passed. But to avoid falling behind it’s best to write the thank-yous as soon as gifts start arriving. Keep a list of what you’ve received and which notes you’ve sent. Get your fiancé involved as well. Suggest that he write to his family members and friends.
And as tempting as it may be, don’t use email for this task. Only handwritten notes are acceptable. WHO PAYS?
Q
We’re on a budget and don’t want to pay for everyone’s dinner and drinks at our restaurant reception. How do we inform our guests on the invitation? Akron, Ohio
A
Simple: You don’t. A wedding invitation—no matter where the reception is or how small the guest list—means that the hosts (you) are responsible for the costs. The only way for you not to incur expenses is if some other family member or friend offers to host the reception in your honor. Another option: If budget is a major concern you and your fiancé might want to marry at a venue that offers an elopement package—no guests, but the savings can be considerable. MAKING MUSIC
Q
Our reception site manager recommended a DJ for our wedding. Should we give him a playlist of our favorite songs or just let him do his thing?
A
Wilmington, Delaware
It’s always better to inform your DJ of the type of music you and your fiancé would like him to play. You should visit the DJ’s website, listen to a demo and get recommendations from other couples. If you choose to hire him, provide a playlist of your favorite tunes especially if yours is a dancing crowd. You’ll want to make sure he spins lots of get-up-on-your feet music. Work out the list in advance with your
fiancé and don’t forget to include a few slower-paced tunes for guests who prefer less-energetic dancing. Also, ask your DJ how many breaks he usually takes (and for how long) and be sure to provide him with a meal. GIVE A GIFT?
Q
Our neighbor is hosting a pre-wedding party for us. We’re planning to get gifts for our attendants; should we also purchase something for her? Flagstaff, Arizona
A
Definitely: Anyone who goes above and beyond to assist in any way or host a party for you should be acknowledged. The gift needn’t be super-expensive but it should be thoughtful: a gift card for a mani/pedi or one to her favorite restaurant. Wine, champagne, flowers, a small potted plant or a gift basket filled with tasty treats will also be appreciated. ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. You DoYOU
T
Celebrations and wedding expert David Tutera tells you how to tune out the noise and unsolicited opinions that come with planning your big day.
his is your day! How many times have you heard that phrase? Yet I’ve noticed that somehow when a girlfriend becomes a fiancé, she seems to lose all confidence in both the smallest and largest big-day decisions. And this is not a good place to find yourself when you’re in the midst of wedding planning.
CROWD CONTROL

Everybody is going to have an opinion, whether helpful or not. Isn’t it amazing how everyone wants to weigh in? That’s why I always suggest my brides keep the size of their advice entourage to a minimum. DAVID’S RULE OF THUMB: SURROUND YOURSELF WITH A SMALL This is my number-one rule. Too many GROUP OF POSITIVE PEOPLE. TRUST YOUR GUT AND LISTEN voices can make you lose sight of your TO YOUR HEART. THEY WILL NEVER STEER YOU WRONG. vision. This is your day. Think about decision you’re making is not only the right one, but one that will what the phrase really means, and make it your mantra. give you one of the most beautiful and special days of your life. Here, some ways to stay focused.
KNOW THYSELF
PUT IT DOWN ON PAPER
There are hundreds of truths you know for sure about yourself. Start by free-associating the things that bring you joy. What’s your favorite color? What are some of your favorite foods? As for me, I love the color blue, and I could eat desserts (anything sweet) every day from now until forever. Now it’s your turn—and your wedding: When you close your eyes, what do you see? Elegant touches like red roses and crystal? Or do you see yourself dancing under the stars to a bluegrass band in a field of wildflowers? What is your heart saying? Listen to it, trust it and know that every
Now that your creative bridal juices are flowing, write everything down, and start compiling a planning binder. As the process unfolds, you can start filing vendor contracts and timelines as well. Once you have your ideas, plans and inspiration in one place, you’ll discover that this organization has given you the luxury of feeling cool, calm and collected—literally! Bonus confidence-building points: having hard-copy notes, images and plans you can point to will go a long way toward keeping everyone else’s opinions to a minimum: You already know what you want, so others will be less likely to rush in with conflicting ideas.
A BFF with Benefits Enlist a friend or bridesmaid to act as a buffer throughout the planning process. Let her be the one to keep you above the fray when it comes to navigating potential landmines such as dress-shopping and catering decisions. Consider the same strategy for the big day itself, when you might need help smoothing out awkward situations: a guest whom you’d rather avoid; the mother-in-law who swoops in at inopportune moments.
YES YOU CAN Trust your instincts. You automatically reach for the perfect accessories for that little black dress. Why should it be any different when it comes to the big white gown? Did you love your hair during your trial run? Not so much? Bring in a few more pictures of what you had in mind and try, try again. Your stylist wants you to feel amazing, so don’t settle until you feel like the princess you are. Be straightforward, stay organized and think positive thoughts. I always say a calm bride is a happy bride— and what is more beautiful than a happy, confident woman?

ADVICE One of the best ways to tell if you click with someone you might hire is by contrast. Plan to meet with at least five photographers. Don’t worry about the details—albums, timelines, deposits. Save them for later. Schedule a series of digital meetings, using Skype or FaceTime to save time and eliminate unnecessary travel. When you meet, there are only two key things you need to know. First, “is this person able and willing to give me what I want?” And second, “do I sense that, as people, we click?” Once you’ve met with enough photographers, those who feel right will be clear. Use these opportunities to see how well you communicate with each other as you narrow the field.
Ask your potential photograHaving phers to show you images photographers from an entire wedding show you images from they’ve shot. You should discuss the photographs.

Top pro William Petruzzo shares the best ways to focus in on finding your perfect wedding photographer.
G
oogling “questions to ask a wedding photographer” produces the same advice again and again: questions like “How long have you been in business?” “What’s your style?” or “What happens if you become ill?” These are all good questions, and you should plan on asking them. But in today’s world, with so many photographers to choose from, it’s more important than ever that you click with the photographer you choose. Here, some guidelines.
Clicking with your photographer means you like their style of photography. This is important because you don’t want to have to ask them to emulate someone else’s style. It also means you feel safe—confident he or she will give you great results—you like talking to each other, you understand each other and neither of you will need constant clarification. Clicking means that you sense that your photographer wants to do a good job on your wedding day and if something goes wrong, you’ll feel confident that he will make it right.
Be aware there are two categories of photographer: art-oriented and customer-service oriented. There are incredible photographers in both categories and the two categories are not mutually exclusive. What matters is what resonates with you. An art-oriented photographer might take longer on your wedding day and cause schedule delays in order to get the perfect shot or the right light. But couples that click with them will treasure the results. A customer-service oriented photographer, on the other hand, will be prompt and have a streamlined process that helps your big day run smoothly. There is a chance, however, that a truly outstanding photo can be missed for the greater good. There is no right or wrong here, there is only what feels right to you. As you review potential photographers’ wedding portfolios, asking about the logistics and backstories behind select shots will reveal which way your photographer leans. Ask yourself: Which would be better on your wedding day?
Once you’ve met with enough photographers, the one who feels right should be a clear standout: You like his or her photo style, the photographer makes you feel comfortable and confident and you’re communicating with ease in anticipation of your beautiful day. Congratulations—you’re clicking! Photographer William Petruzzo is based in the Washington, D.C. area and is a member of PPA, Professional Photographers of America. Ask each pro to talk about some images and to explain the context, the choices they made, and what they like and don’t like. Express your opinion and weigh each response. Does it feel right? If you felt eager for the meeting to end, you probably weren’t clicking and it probably doesn’t matter how good their photography was for another couple.

REAL BRIDES AND WEDDING PROS SHARE THEIR BEST PLANNING ADVICE AND TIPS.
While there’s never an optimum time to experience loss of income, dealing with a contracted cash flow just when you’re putting together a wedding budget can seem like an almost insurmountable challenge. But this budget shortfall need not signal the end of the wedding of your dreams. With some organization, creativity and small adjustments, your wedding can still go on with nary a hitch. Help is at hand, ahead.
PHOTOGRAPHY: ISTOCK
BY TERRI HUGGINS HART
START AT THE BOTTOM LINE Those once-in-a-lifetime wedding memories may be priceless, but every single wedding line item comes with a price tag. Unfortunately, loss of income means having to take a fresh look at the budget. Big-day elements may have to be downsized, become DIY projects or jettisoned. • SIT DOWN WITH YOUR FIANCÉ and analyze your finances. “It’s unromantic, but you need to take emotions out of it,” says Cindy Shanholtz, owner and creative director of Effortless Events in Chicago. “Then, get down to business and make it work.” • TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT THE COST of your needs, likes and wants and determine what money will be coming in from sources such as unemployment benefits or even help from your parents. • SHANHOLTZ SUGGESTS TAKING your projected wedding budget and dividing by the number of guests. She says people are often surprised by the results once they realize the cost per person. Catering typically takes the largest chunk of the budget, making slicing
“
ANALYZE YOUR CONTRACTS So you’ve revised your budget and have some cost-cutting ideas in mind. Where do you go from here? The next step is to analyze contracts you’ve already signed to look for wiggle room. • WHEN NEGOTIATING contracts, you want to sign off on the minimum number of guests possible, Shanholtz says. “It’s much easier to add guests to a contract than it is to subtract.” • BOOKING VENDORS far enough in advance should allow you to make changes as your planning timeline unfolds. But once the contract is signed your negotiating power will be diminished to a great extent. That said, explaining your financial situation to your vendors can lead to price adjustments even on contracts that have been signed. Take for example Anne S., a recent bride who
was able to work out a deal with her photographer to get a lower rate by paying for his services in cash. Some vendors may be willing to renegotiate contracted prices if you agree to pay in full at an earlier date than originally agreed upon. • IF A CONTRACT IS ALREADY signed, speak with your vendor about making adjustments as needed: be it working with a lower head count, shifting the wedding date or tweaking the food and beverage offerings. “Most people are understanding and want repeat business,” Shanholtz says, adding, “The majority of vendors are going to work with you.”
and dicing your guest list the number-one way to cut costs. Says Shanholtz: “Invitations shouldn’t go out until you are six to eight weeks out from your wedding so if the job loss happens earlier on in the planning, trimming your guest list is the first and best place to start.” • NEXT, LOOK AT ADDITIONAL cost-saving measures. An easy one is to nix the favors. “Unless you can eat it or drink it, I don’t recommend favors,” Shanholtz says. Hosting your wedding at less traditional dates and times can reduce budgets as well. Weekday weddings will be less expensive as will weddings held earlier in the day for brunch. “An omelet will always be cheaper than a filet,” says Shanholtz. (For more budget-saving ideas, see “75 Best Budget Tips” in this issue.)
“
As you reach out to prospective vendors, keep in mind there will be additional costs that aren’t spelled out in your contract. Whatever price you are quoted from a vendor is always ‘plus plus,’ meaning plus gratuity and plus tax. You don’t want to go over budget because you forgot to figure those extra costs.
“
“
Employed or not, the months leading up to your wedding will provide much excitement and delight. So instead of focusing on the problems inherent in juggling finances, job hunting, and, yes, wedding planning, remember the memories you’ll be creating together that will last a lifetime.
MANAGE YOUR TIME
• “MY JOB HUNT WAS PRIORITY NUMBER ONE,” says recent bride Jennifer G. Yet she was able to put the upside of being jobless to good use. “In between resume edits, internet searches, job boards, LinkedIn connections and applications, there was time to call vendors or go to the craft store so I could execute that Pinterest-perfect centerpiece.” Jennifer, who threw a surprise wedding while unemployed, created her own centerpieces, ceremony pillars, easels, and marquee lights. Her husband even got involved by assisting with decorating invitations. • “INTERVIEWING IS LIKE GOING ON A BAD DATE, so wedding-planning activities kept me sane and helped break up the stress,” explains Anne, who was unemployed at start of her engagement, only to find the roles reversed when she found a job and her fiancé lost his. He used some of his new-found free time to refresh skills by completing a coding boot camp while Anne immersed herself in the upcoming big-day details. • GETTING TOGETHER WITH FRIENDS for an evening of wedding DIY can help keep the mood light and costs down. Before you invite your crew over for a night of crafting surprise-ball favors and fun escort cards, “Keep in mind that just because you have time on your hands that doesn’t mean your family, friends and bridal party will be available to hang out with you,” reminds Shanholtz.
MAKE CONNECTIONS AS YOU PLAN In being open with people you meet on the wedding-planning front, you’ll find cost-cutting tips, advice and emotional support. You might even find a job! Think about it. Planning a wedding requires multiple meetings and loads of collaboration. That means lots of networking opportunities and a lot of people who may know about job openings in your area of expertise. • “OPPORTUNITY IS EVERYWHERE. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT,” says Dara Lynn Smith, who was unemployed during the final months of her wedding planning. Dara didn’t hold back when it came to discussing her job loss. By being very vocal about her situation she was able to score a few side gigs to supplement her income such as dog walking and reviewing local restaurants while searching for a new position. While the side gigs weren’t a career, they helped Dara fill financial holes and eventually made her realize her career calling was actually in….. weddings! “I bounced ideas off vendors and kept in touch with my wedding planner after the big day,” Dara explains. With the blessing of her husband and wedding planner, she decided to create and make the operation of her wedding blog—The First Look (TheFirstLookBlog.com)—her career focus. While every vendor may not inspire a new career, your openness and honesty may help you fi nd a familiar story.

PRACTICE SELF CARE Job loss can trigger feelings of inadequacy, emptiness and confusion. Be kind to yourself. If you are the one who’s without a job, don’t neglect your own self-care. If it’s your partner, take care to underscore that he still adds much value to the relationship—with or without a job. Pamper yourself in between planning seating charts, designing decor and updating LinkedIn profiles. Anne found serenity in getting in shape for the wedding. “Working out consistently was key to my mental and physical well-being.” And of course, pay attention to the health of your relationship. Think of this hiccup as practice for issues to come, says Vikki Ziegler, relationship expert and author of The Pre-Marital Planner. Ziegler suggests taking a moment to remember why you fell in love: “This is the perfect time to look to your upcoming marriage vows—whether you’ve already written them or have yet to create them. Let them serve as a reminder of why you love each other and the promise you’re making to each other to sustain that love,” Ziegler says.
• KEEP THE FOCUS on all the good t hat comes with weddings. Employed or not, getting married is such an exciting time. Instead of zoning in on the problems of juggling wedding plans, budget management and job hunting, remember the memories you’ll be creating together that will last a lifetime.

BEST BUDGET TIPS
1 To get a lavish look on a modest decor budget, choose a venue with a lot
of character of its own. Some possibilities: an aquarium, zoo, museum, gallery, botanical garden or historical site. 2 Rent a vacation home or private estate for a small, intimate affair. “They may charge a week’s worth in rent but it may still be equal to or less than renting a traditional reception venue,” says Maryrose Griffith of Maryrose Griffith Event Design and Coordination in San Diego, California. 3 Choose a theme or motif and carry it through the event for a stylish look,
says the creative marketing and events team at Bonnell’s Restaurant Group in Fort Worth, Texas. For example, start with a pattern on your invitation, perhaps
elegant scrollwork, and incorporate it into other elements like programs, favors, escort cards or even gobo lights for the dance floor. 4 Use color to posh effect, says Griffith. Using a rich hue such as chocolate brown or deep eggplant can give any color palette a stylish look without costing you any extra green stuff. They work with a variety of shades like apple green, light blue, orange, pink or red. 5 Kick off your celebration in high style with a glamorous invite. “Invitations set the mood for the wedding, so go beyond the standard white card,” says Griffith. You’ll get a much more impressive look by incorporating color in your design. 6 Griffith’s savvy stationery tip: Invest
the money to have your invitations designed professionally, but then print your own save-the-dates, programs, menus and escort cards using the same fonts, colors and style as your custom invites. 7 Say ciao to costly hand-done calligraphy. Either print the envelopes on your computer, using a calligraphy font, or have them printed at your local print/copy shop for just pennies each. 8 Have a cocktail reception, but be cost-conscious by focusing on a beautiful display rather than tons and tons of food. “Butlers in tuxedos passing trays of a few kinds of stylish hors d’oeuvres seems more high-end than chafing dishes on a buffet table, but the cost is roughly the same,” says the team at Bonnell’s.

9 Ask your venue’s wait staff to don white gloves while they’re serving. “You
can buy gloves for under $1 a pair,” says Samantha Goldberg of Samantha Goldberg & Co. in Summit, New Jersey. 10 Upgrade your linens. Griffith suggests pintuck, shantung or another glamorous fabric. “For just $15 to $30 per table, they’re the biggest bang for your buck you can get,” she says. 11 While you’re at it, you can rent

napkins in a color or pattern for about $1 each, adding a pop of vibrant color and a
more custom look at the same time. 12 Go a little longer than floor length with your table linens. “Pooling linens makes for a much more luxurious, opulent look,” notes Goldberg. 13 Another option: Rent a gauzy overlay, for $9 to $25 apiece, to dress up your table. Or buy sheer organza by the yard at a fabric store and have overlays made for just $5 to $8 apiece. 14 Another table topper: If you (or someone else you know) is handy, create your own table runners. You can go for something extra luxe in your fabric because you won’t need a great deal of it. 15 Accent your table with pretty napkin rings. “You can rent them in different styles and colors for a few dollars each or buy them on sale for as little as 99 cents apiece,” says Goldberg. 16 Top each napkin with a single bloom and tie with a coordinating ribbon,
recommends New York City-based event planner Leslie Price of In Any Event. 17 Fold it fancy. “A unique napkin fold can make a statement and most venues won’t charge for the service,” says Price.
One option: Fold the napkin to create a pocket to hold a menu. 18 Attach a small bouquet or floral garland to the backs of the bride’s and groom’s chairs to give them a special look. 19 Change up your chairs. Try white suede for the lead table and regular white chairs for the rest of the guests. 20 Use ribbon to upgrade candleholders. Hold the ribbon in place with sticky dots, says Laura Clare, owner of Laura Clare Floral Design and Event Decor in Hoboken, New Jersey. 21 Place a colored or textured charger ($3 to $5 each) underneath the dinner plates. 22 Instead of using clear glass votive holders, try colored or etched ones, suggests Price. Try your local crafts store or candles4less.com, where you can get a box of 12 for $11.99. 23 Out: standard banquet chairs. In: elegant chiavari chairs (in gold or silver) at about $9 each to rent, or clear “ghost” chairs at about $12 each to rent. 24 Use mirrors or frosted glass to cover
saves you the cost of providing linens. 25 Shake up the table shapes. Try a long rectangular table. These come at the same price as typical round shapes but bring a more sophisticated look. 26 Invest in a little lighting—for a huge impact. Get a wash of color on walls with uplights, suggests Griffith. “Even two or three lights accentuating a focal point will change the feel of the room,” she says. Costs for the light rentals run from $12 to $35 each, including color gels. 27 Another bright idea: Use pin spotlights, at $25 to $50 each, to give extra presence to your tables. 28 To make flower arrangements seem grander and more stylish for just a few dollars, wrap inexpensive glass containers
in handmade paper, wallpaper or fabric and add a ribbon, suggests Griffith. 29 In place of pricey flowers for centerpieces, consider romantic candelabras draped in crystals. Tabletop candelabras can be rented for $25 to $75 at websites like simplyelegantwed.com. 30 Griffith likes to splurge on wellplaced, plush lounge furniture. “Lounge furniture is more affordable than you might think,” she says. “A set of curved benches, for example, might run you about $400. And your guests will feel spoiled!” ➺
31 Bring on the bling. “Faux crystals— on bouquets, the cake, invitations, place cards and menus—are eye-catching and give an expensive feel,” says Griffith. You can purchase glass beads inexpensively at local crafts stores. 32 Place a beautiful menu at each guest’s place. Many venues will print them for you for free, or you can make them yourself without spending much. 33 Go for chic and simple centerpieces. Instead of paying $75 to $125 each for elaborate table arrangements, purchase tall, clear cylinders from the local dollar store to use as containers for single orchids or rose petals in water with floating candles on top, suggests Goldberg. 34 Or use colored water in your centerpieces to coordinate with your decor.
The effect is magical in candlelight. 35 Set reception tables with colored or patterned china instead of standard white. The cost will be about $3-$7 per
setting. 36 Hire out-of-the-ordinary entertainment for a high-impact cocktail hour. To save costs, opt for a three-piece ensemble instead of a five-piece. Or use standout musicians for the cocktail hour and switch to a DJ for dancing later on in the evening. 37 Instead of hiring a group for the cocktail hour, have a solo musician, like a classical guitarist, add something different and delightful.
38 Consider a musical group that combines a DJ and musicians who perform along with the recorded music. It’ll get

the crowd dancing, and provide the upscale feel of a live band at less expense. 39 If you’re hiring a DJ, consider a live bongo player or sax player to accompany your mix master. 40 Glow on! “Use candlelight to give your room a rich, romantic look,” says Goldberg. “It’s highly affordable.” 41 Get creative with escort cards and/ or place cards. In some cases you can do a different—and more interesting—shape or color for less than you’d pay for the typical tented fold-over cards, says Clare. 42 Instead of just lining up escort cards on a table, string them from branches or nestle them in a bed of grass, sand, rocks or flower petals. 43 Splurge on hand calligraphy for your escort cards, place cards or table numbers. 44 Dress up your escort cards and
blooms in front of a mirror—the reflection will create an ultralush look. 50 Order window clings (perfect for personalizing glass doors at your venue) at websites like orientaltrading.com or Etsy. Prices for the clings start at around $15, depending on size. 51 Small wrought-iron trees, available at specialty stores or online, make a chic backdrop or centerpiece. Take them up a notch by hanging votives or glittering ornaments from the branches. 52 A fresh centerpiece idea: Fill clear containers with sliced limes, lemons or oranges. a metallic sheen rather than a flat card stock, says Price. If you were to purchase card stock yourself, you’d pay about $40 per 100 sheets for metallic and about $27 per 100 sheets of flat. The difference would be about 13 cents a sheet. 45 For an elegant look, ask the calligrapher to spell out table numbers (“six” instead of “6”), says Price. 46 Make it metallic. “Metallic items look extravagant but don’t cost any more than their counterparts,” says Griffith, who suggests presenting favors in little gold boxes and choosing a shimmery champagne color for linens. 47 Vary the height, size or shape of centerpieces. “This is a design trick often used by pros,” explains Griffith. “By doing this you create dimension, which keeps the eye flowing throughout the room, It’s a really nice effect.” 48 Play around with centerpiece containers for a more custom look. One of Bonner’s Texas brides is filling specialty cowboy boots with wildflowers for a casually elegant air.
53 Use natural elements that hold an earthy, upscale appeal. Goldberg sug-
gests filling a two- to three-foot-high vase with a base of river rocks and adding dramatic branches of curly willow or manzanita branches. Place these arrangements at the entrance to your cocktail hour and/or reception.

FOR A CHIC IMPRESSION, CATERERS CAN CREATE UNIQUE DISPLAYS WITH ITEMS ALREADY ON HAND SUCH AS SHOT GLASSES AND CERAMIC TEASPOONS AT NO ADDITIONAL COST TO YOU.
54 When selecting butler-passed foods, go for visually pleasing nibbles. Red gaz-
pacho shooters with a green garnish look great lined up on a tray. 55 Start your meal with an amusebouche, a tasty pre-dinner bite. Try an espresso cup of soup, a mini crab cake or a single scallop. Dropping the salad course and replacing it with an amusebouche is usually done at no extra cost. 56 Presenting food in eye-catching ways creates a chic impression but doesn’t have to add costs. “Most chefs

Guests will really enjoy the naturally creative touch!” 60 Add an unexpected accent to dishes with pretty herbs or edible flowers, such as pansies or squash blossoms, says Clare. 61 Classic cocktails—an old-fashioned, anyone?—are making a comeback. Offer one or two kinds of mixed drinks, and you’ll imbue your reception with a sophisticated, vintage feel that guests will be sure to remember fondly. 62 Have waiters work the room. “Passing specialty drinks can upgrade your

looks rich and extravagant,” says Goldberg. 70 Display your favorite goodies—cookies, candy, potato chips—whatever you’re known for noshing—in containers or even vases of different heights, shapes and sizes. 71 Take your goodie bag up a notch by providing customized “to go” bags or boxes with a stamp or sticker with your names or logo, says Griffith. 72 An elaborate wedding cake can be super pricey. Instead, offer your guests miniature pies, petit fours or individual servings of crème brûlée. 73 A cupcake or doughnut tower is another fun and budget-friendly change from a traditional cake. Price’s insider secret: If your venue offers four courses, negotiate down to three and use the “credit” to pay for the duo or trio. For a fabulous dessert trio, for example, you might serve a mini flourless chocolate cake, a berry tartlet and a shortbread cookie. 59 Adopt a leaf motif. For a summery look, serve appetizers on petite tropical leaves and use a leaf as a charger under the dinner plate, says Clare. “You can even use a long pod or a sturdy leaf as a
look, and most venues will include it in their package,” says Price. 63 The champagne tower is back in style, says Clare. Create one by stacking glasses in a pyramid shape. There may be a small setup cost. Drop single raspberries into glasses for extra effect. 64 Float a slice of lemon, orange, lime or a strawberry or raspberry in each guest’s water glass. 65 Instead of a budget-busting full, open bar, offer your guests a signature cocktail, chosen to complement your wedding colors, suggests Griffith. 66 Decorate your wedding cake with fresh flowers to match your decor (less expensive than sugarpaste!). “Most florists will provide this for you at a minimal charge if they’re already providing other elements of your wedding,” says Price. 67 Sweet and simple: Have your caterer

t’s the ultimate meet-cute moment. “Jared and I met at three months old, when my mom babysat him one afternoon,” Jamie says. Fastforward through shared middle and high schools (“we weren’t friends”), the couple finally teamed up romantically at Penn State University. After seven years of dating, the groom devised an uber-romantic surprise rooftop proposal, replete with roses, champagne, and a violinist. So it’s no surprise the couple’s wedding was equally special—abundant with flowers and accented with fun (cue the late-night appearance of a Mr. Softee ice-cream truck). Says Jared, “It was the best and most magical day, surrounded by family and friends.”

The requirements for non-residents to marry in Italy are extensive, and all documents must be officially translated and apostilled. Marriage licenses are required and should be obtained before traveling to Italy (law requires the license be issued two weeks before the ceremony). Passports, birth certificates and, if applicable, divorce decrees and death certificates must be translated into Italian and authenticated by an Italian Consulate. An Atto Notto (appointment with Italian officials to ask permission to marry) must be requested before arrival in Italy. At that session, the couple along with two witnesses and the interpreter must show proof of entry to Italy or, if applicable, a visa. The Nulla Osta (document stating there are no impediments to marry) is to be completed at this time, as should an intention to marry.

Set on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, the hideaway showcases the area’s nautical traditions. The couple was joined by a few family members to their literal tying of the knot aboard one of the estate’s vintage boats. The property’s setting is as serene as the surrounding waters. Here, the service and amenities are superlative: “There are few places that meet expectations, and go far beyond those like the Inn at Perry Cabin,” says Marissa.
The entire celebration was outdoors.

stretches over 26 pastoral acres. Executive chef Gregory James sources food from the inn’s garden, neighboring farms and the catch of the day. And since this is Maryland, crab is a center point of all menus. Crab was featured at the intimate celebratory dinner of just 15 guests, all of it sourced from J.M. Clayton Seafood, a local seafood purveyor that’s been serving up regional blue crabs for five generations. Preparations at Wil and Marissa’s meal were haute takes on Maryland classics, including crab imperial, traditionally crafted with mayonnaise and Fresh caught.

Snappy Happy The Inn at Perry Cabin is fantastically photogenic. In fact, Wil and Marissa had two days of photos to capture many of the property’s most Insta-perfect settings. The couple took pictures in front of the estate’s boats, at the entrance to the Inn, in the spectacular gardens and by the pretty pool. They also posed on a bicycle—Wil steering; Marissa on the handlebars—positioned on the property’s long driveway lined with gorgeous trees and riots of flowers. For the second session, the couple went to the “charming town of St. Michaels to explore the ‘mom and pop’ shops,” says the bride. Another favorite—“the view of the Inn at Perry Cabin from the water is breathtaking!” she notes. ➺
The Inn recently introduced private glass houses, where guests can dine on the water in a cozy, intimate setting. They are perfect for romantic celebrations. Sail away on the Miles River by the Chesapeake Bay.

A variety of cruises are on the activities menu.
“All of the little touches are timeless and amazing!” says Marissa.
Tying the Knot “Together, we tied the fisherman knot and did a blessing of the rings in water,” says Marissa. “Our families brought water from Bethany Beach, Delaware where Wil and I met; from Maine where we reconnected; from our hometown and from Hoboken where we live together now,” she explains. “We poured water from each place and pieces of our lives together in a bowl—combining them was a symbol of our love story.”

Marriage licenses are required in Maryland. They may be obtained at the local County Clerk’s office or via a non-resident marriage license application-affidavit. Couples should apply in person (unless using the non-resident affidavit) and must furnish proof of age, address, social security numbers and, if applicable, divorce decree or death certificate. Fees vary by county. There is a 48-hour waiting period; licenses are valid for six months. Note: Only a judge, the clerk of the circuit court or a specialized appointed deputy clerk of the circuit court may perform civil unions in the state of Maryland.
Gift bags curated by Marissa for guests were entirely locally sourced. Canvas bags with a map of the Chesapeake revealed crab mallets, crab bushels and bespoke sugar cookies that echoed the ceremony aboard the 55-foot Hinckley yacht.

MARITIME TRADITIONS OF MARYLAND DATE TO THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR. And shipbuilding has been an industrial mainstay in the state. In addition, crabbing, oystering and recreational boating have long been celebrated in Maryland. In fact, there are more than two dozen maritime museums and historical points of interest (including lighthouses, canal-adjacent parks and shipbuilding facilities) here. The Annapolis Maritime Museum, positioned on the banks of the Chesapeake, offers an interactive look at the storied traditions. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, set on a wharf that once housed seafood packing outfits and work boats, is just minutes from The Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michaels. The resort property, with its picturesque boat basin, offers myriad nautical experiences including sailing classes, endless boat excursions and yacht transfers from Annapolis. The Inn hosts special occasions aboard its fleet, which is what sold the couple to celebrate at the resort made famous in Wedding Crashers
travel notes
It’s almost as if you’ve stepped into a time when life was quiet and pleasures were simple when you check into the secluded Inn at Perry Cabin on the Miles River by the storied Chesapeake Bay. The pastoral property, after all, was first founded just after the War of 1812. A grand driveway edged in meticulously manicured flowers will greet you upon arrival. Or you may choose to begin your stay at the hideaway with a butler-attended yacht ride from Annapolis to the 26-acre water-facing property. Whichever you choose, you’ll immediately feel that lounging is the priority. And there are plenty of options to do so—by the pool, on the lawn or on the balcony or terrace of your room. Accommodations are divided into individual cottages and sumptuous guest rooms. All are decorated with nautical touches and flaunt gorgeous garden or water views. Activities—of course—celebrate the sea with a sailing academy, yachting excursions and an extensive fleet as well as kayaks. Golf, tennis and spa-ing are also on the robust amenity menu (room rates start $425 a night; innatperrycabin.com).
