ADVICE
etiquette
Straight talk, smart solutions by Mary Clarke, Editor in Chief
AM I INVITED?
Q
We’ve been planning a very small wedding. What’s the best thing to say if someone not on our guest list asks if they’re invited?
A
Just be gracious. Let them know you’re flattered to be asked but that you’ve planned an extremely intimate celebration and sadly cannot ask as many guests as you’d like. Post-pandemic, more and more couples are going for smaller gatherings so your friend shouldn’t be too surprised about your decision. You can elaborate further. Perhaps you’re still feeling a lingering need to follow safety guidelines...or you have budget constraints, limited spaced, etc.—or simply leave it at that. Most people are fully aware of how costly weddings are, too, and will understand. BELATED THANKS
Q
PHOTOGRAPHY: LARISSA CLEVELAND
It’s been five months since I attended a friend’s wedding, and I still haven’t received a thank-you note for my gift. Is this amount of time acceptable? As a soon-to-be-wed person, when should I send out my thank-yous?
A
Thank-you notes should be sent within three months after the wedding. It may be an oversight on your friend’s part or perhaps they are simply overwhelmed by the task. If you find yourself in the same position, you should still send your notes no matter how many months have passed. But to avoid falling behind, it’s best to write your thank-yous as soon as gifts start rolling in. Keep a list of what you’ve received from whom, and which notes
you’ve sent out. Get your partner involved as well. Suggest that they write to their family members and friends. Oh, and as tempting as it may be, do not use email for this task: Thank-yous should always be hand-written. WHO PAYS?
Q
We’re on a budget and don’t want to shoulder the food and drink costs at our restaurant reception. How do we word this on our invitation?
A
Simple: You don’t. A wedding invitation—no matter where the reception is held or how miniscule the guest list—means that the hosts (that’s you) are responsible for the costs. The only way for you not to incur expenses is if some other family member or friend offers to host the reception in your honor. Another option: If money is a major concern, you and your partner might want to marry at a venue that offers an elopement package—no guests, but the savings can be considerable. MAKING MUSIC
Q
Our reception site manager recommended a DJ for our wedding. Should we give them a playlist of our favorite songs, or just let them do their thing?
A
It’s always better to provide your DJ with the type of music the two of you would like to hear at the reception. Make time to check out the DJ’s website, listen to some demo mixes and get recommendations from other couples. Once you’ve hired your
DJ, share a playlist of your favorite tunes, especially if yours is a dancing crowd. You’ll want to make sure the DJ spins plenty of get-out-on-the-floor music. Work out a list in advance with your partner, and don’t forget to include a few slower-paced tunes for guests who prefer less-energetic dancing. Also, ask your DJ how many breaks (and for how long) they usually take—and be sure to provide a meal. GIVE A GIFT?
Q
Our neighbor is hosting a prewedding party for us. We’re planning to get gifts for our attendants; should we also purchase something for her?
A
Definitely! Anyone who goes above and beyond to assist in any way or host a party for you should be acknowledged. The gift needn’t be super-expensive, but it should be thoughtful: a gift card for a mani/ pedi or one to her favorite restaurant. Wine, champagne, flowers, a small potted plant or a gift basket filled with culinary treats will always be appreciated. ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. Docked on New York City’s Hudson River, this exceptional luxury liner hosted our fashion fantasy with models dripping in dramatic tulle, gilded beading, and mysterious Venice inspired masks. ask david ADVICE
HEADS UP
Celebrity wedding and event expert David Tutera shares his game plan for fabulous big-day hair. Is there any beauty bummer worse than the classic bad-hair day? Smudged makeup can be fixed with relative ease, but frizzy, flat or flyaway hair? That’s a different story, and it’s certainly a scenario you want to avoid on your wedding day. So be prepared. Be very prepared. Here are some guidelines.
I DO’S FOR HAIR
I DONT’S FOR HAIR • Don’t assume your regular stylist is best for your wedding. The go-to hair pro who cuts your hair every six weeks may not be well-versed in wedding ’dos. If this is the case, get referrals from recently married friends. • Don’t assume anything when it comes to the language of hair. Bringing in images will help your stylist identify what you want. Terms like “big bun,” “soft waves,” “sophisticated” and “chic” mean different things to different people, so comparing visuals can be the best way to communicate. • Beware of tendril-overload. A few flirty tendrils around your face can look romantic as long as there are only a few and they are not too long. Too many strands can cast unflattering shadows on your beautiful face. • Don’t neglect the neckline of your gown. Whether it’s strapless, one-shoulder or sweetheart, the top of your gown is a key shape to keep in mind when it comes to choosing your hairstyle. A full-on updo may feel (and look) too bare with a strapless dress. • Don’t hide your highlights. When highlighted hair is pinned into an updo, a chunk of dark hair is revealed beneath. Break up the solid color by having extra highlights applied at the underlayers of your hair if you plan to go with an upswept style.
DAVID’S RULE OF THUMB: BE SURE YOU KNOW PRECISELY WHAT WEDDING HAIRSTYLE YOU’RE GETTING AND HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE TO STYLE. NO SURPRISES ON THE BIG DAY! 28 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Nov/Dec 2023
PHOTOGRAPHY: TERRY DOYLE
Have a hair trial. The salon appointment should allow enough time for you to try three different hairstyles. Be sure to bring your headpiece (or a photo of it) along. Book your hair stylist four to six months ahead of time, and have your trial four to six weeks prior to the wedding. Speak up! Explain the style of your wedding and reception to your stylist, and bring a photo or sketch of your gown. Ask them to suggest looks that will harmonize with the overall feel of your wedding. Be open to suggestions. You may think you want a cascade of rolling waves, but don’t pass on the opportunity to try, say, a low, loose chignon, or some clip-on extensions. Go on—it’s only a hair trial, and you may be pleasantly surprised. Take pictures as you go. Bring a friend to your trial, and have her take photos of all your options from every angle. Be sure to capture front, profile, back, even how hair looks from above. The goal is to have every side be your “best side,” since you’re sure to be photographed from every angle on the big day. When scheduling your hair appointments for your actual wedding day, add a cushion of time so no one (neither you nor your bridesmaids) will be “fashionably late.” Do wear a button-front shirt or dress for your day-of styling. That way, when you change into your wedding finery, you won’t have to navigate pulling your shirt over your finished hairdo.
planning notebook BIG DAY YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER First, make sure you are comfortable with your photographer, keeping in mind that they will effectively be directing you and your wedding party from one photo op to another. Have very specific timelines set up along with your shot list so there’s a clear understating of how long your pictures are going to take. Huge question: If they have not been there before, are they going to go scout the venue? What pictures do you definitely want? Go and scout the venue together. Make sure this is on the table before you book.
YOUR VIDEOGRAPHER What’s popular now are trailers— short films that last anywhere from five to 10 minutes. Rather than documenting the day, these are meant to capture people in the moment. As with your photographer, make sure you’re comfortable with the cameraperson as well as with their gear. Take a look at the type of equipment they use. Is it heavy duty (which could feel invasive) or compact and lightweight?
YOUR FLORIST A lot of florists do so much more than just flowers. Some are full stagers. They handle the draperies, the bunting, and other key decor elements. Do make sure if they are handling decor, that they’ll be handling the setting up and the taking down. Find out what the process entails and make sure you understand the costs. Some florists include it and others charge extra.
NO WORRIES
David Anthony, aka the Wedding M.D M.D., ., shares some key planning truths that will keep you focused on the big, beautiful wedding picture.

“T
YOUR CAKE Often brides say, “I’m not going to have a wedding cake.” Here’s the problem. The cake cutting is symbolic. It’s either the reception kickoff so guests know it’s time to dance or the end point, signaling dessert time. And people love their individual desserts, too. So I would definitely do a combination, even if it’s just a small wedding cake. You want something to cut, something to get the party started.
he one thing I hear all the time from couples is, ‘This is the first time that I’ve done this.’ Well, rest assured that this is not the first time that I’ve done this,” says David Anthony, proprietor of six event venues in upstate New York. With 11 years and 2,200 weddings worth of experience, YOUR SEATING CHART Yes, you have to do a seating chart, Anthony has plenty of big-day planning wisdom with individual place cards at every setting to avoid to share, including some universal wedding truths the movie-theater effect. Let me explain: Nobody “Years ago, on What’s Really Important. Here, some highlights. likes to sit right next to someone at the movies, so they videographers leave an empty seat. Emerald Hour is an organization that works to empower creatives to keep sustainablity top of mind as they design events. Enter Hannah Paukstis, of Hummingbird Events, the creative force behind this microwedding. 1 Vintage Snyder chairs owned by the venue, Kingston House, are accented with au naturel arrangements. 2 Clover Society Sign Co created invitations using handmade seed paper, which, when planted, yields flowers. 3 The team opted to use a giant maple as the ceremony backdrop. 4 The elegant ikebana-inspired floral accents were sourced from local growers and designed to provide a graceful counterpoint to the more abundant installations throughout. 4

Says the team: “The shift towards making more environmentally friendly choices in our everyday lives is extending to events, as well. We’re seeing more and more couples seeking ways to plan a sustainable wedding that is also beautiful.” 1 Gema Collective’s grazing table was equal parts work of art and delicious spread, featuring local cheeses, produce and breads. 2 Locavore baker Alpenglow created the cakes and desserts. Even the colors used in the fillings and frosting were derived from fruits and berries. 3 Hitched Mobile Bar crafted seasonal cocktails that also featured local ingredients. 3

MICHELLE NORWOOD Owner/Producer/Designer, Michelle Norwood Events
Why I Love Weddings • “Weddings hold a special place in my heart because they are filled with profound meaning. It’s often the biggest celebration people will ever host in their lifetime. And I love easing the pressure so they can enjoy it. Being entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding that day is an honor.”
Michelle planned Alexandra Daddario and Andrew Form’s wedding.
Secrets of Success
A bewitching setting. • “Being personable plays a crucial role in building client trust. It fosters a sense of comfort and assurance, allowing for open communication and a deeper understanding of their vision.”
My Favorite Part of Wedding Planning
• “…Is witnessing the couple’s first look, meaning the moment they see the space for the first time, fully transformed. …Their excitement and appreciation for the details we’ve meticulously planned is truly the most fulfilling to me.” 34 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Nov/Dec 2023

A self-professed romantic at heart, destination wedding planner and event producer/ designer Michelle Norwood taps deep into her New Orleans roots to create celebrations—both intimate and grand—that vibrate with joy. Nearly two decades in the event Michelle Norwood planning world led her to strike out on her own, launching Michelle Norwood Events in 2015. Her goal? “To create events that transcend the ordinary, utilizing the art of design storytelling to craft moments that are both unique and timeless—and forever unforgettable.” Says Michelle: “My name is practically synonymous with ‘original design’ and ‘gregarious spirit.’ Initially, clients come for the design, but then they stay for Michelle Norwood. At least that is what I am told.” Her couples are drawn to what Michelle describes as her “blend of creative flair and personal connection.” And her undisputed philosophy as noted on her website, “Love is worth celebrating.”
“Love is worth celebrating!”

An urban-chic affair.
A Secret for My Couples
• “The magic happens when you let go! Loosening your grip can make the process smoother and more enjoyable for both of us. I can really work to bring your vision to life. And you can take a deep breath and savor the journey.”

Celebration Innovation
Grand entrance.
• “One memorable example that stands out: ‘Dinner and a Movie.’ We showcased a movie made by the groom, a film producer, starring the couple themselves.” • “Instead of a traditional dinner location, we opted for a setting that blended history with a Hollywood feel: the iconic steps of NOMA. While the choice posed technical and weather-related risks, we brought the vision to life. Guests were treated to a delectable dinner while the couple’s love story unfolded on the silver screen—an unforgettable evening.”
A Twist on Tradition
• “A new tradition that I hope stays for good: the grandmillennial tradition. It’s all about embracing family heirlooms and vintage keepsakes from grandparents or other cherished family members, even if they’re not physically present. It’s a beautiful way to honor the past while creating new memories for the future.”
Best Budget Move
Sheer magic.
• “The best way to have an elegant and sophisticated celebration that’s budget conscious is simply to reign in that guest list. This is your opportunity to curate a tight-knit crew of people who truly matter to you. You’ll also create an intimate atmosphere where every moment feels comfortable, meaningful, and personal.”
Quality Over Quantity
• “I believe in quality over quantity, so I meticulously curate six to eight weddings a year, ensuring that each couple receives my undivided attention and nothing slips through the cracks. For 2025 I’m considering taking on fewer weddings to dive even deeper into the artistry and craft.”
Biggest Learnings Raising the bar.
• “This past year has taught me the importance of seeing myself through the eyes of others. It’s ironic, considering my whole career revolves around celebrating milestones, yet I sometimes forget to celebrate my own. But now I’m eagerly looking forward to embracing self-celebration and raising a glass to acknowledge my own achievements. Cheers to that!” ➺ 35

Renowned for exquisite destination weddings that uniquely reflect the tastes, traditions and personalities of her couples, Lindsey Shaktman joined Mavinhouse Events, a sister company to 42 North Events, an award-winning planning firm based in New England, at its inception in early 2019. “The Mavinhouse model is entirely brand new to the wedding indusLindsey Shaktman try,” says Lindsey, “offering transparent pricing and a collective of planners that serve a variety of geographic areas. We now have planners from Boston to Charleston.” Says Lindsey: “Wedding planning allows me to flex my logistical muscles and be creative at the same time. I never back down from a complex situation and strive to create events that feel a bit disruptive toward the status quo.”
Why I Love Weddings
• “I love that weddings happen in the blink of an eye. You spend over a year preparing, and after one day it’s all gone. Only the memories remain, so making sure that you’re focused on impactful and meaningful moments has always been a core value of mine.”
Favorite Wedding Tradition
• “First looks! It’s a big day, so feel free to toss old wives’ tales to the wind: wake up in the same bed, have breakfast together, do a first look and then spend the rest of the day together. You’ll feel so much more relaxed.”
All smiles.
A tent provides elegance and protection at once.
Secrets of Success
• “My clients appreciate that I’m a big-picture thinker. I have the ability to think ahead and maximize smaller moments into something more impactful.”
My Favorite Part of Wedding Planning
“… Is the venue search. I love taking an anecdote that a client may share during their first consultations with us, and using that to creatively present venues to them. Doing so feels infinitely more personal than just sending a PDF sales sheet.”
Escort cards in bloom.
Words of Wisdom
• “I always remind my couples that the wedding industry is nearly exclusively made up of small businesses helmed by people who combine their work and their personal lives in more ways than anyone else. For that reason, the cadence of planning can feel a touch odd. It’s important to understand that not every decision can be made up front, and that’s okay”. Celebration Innovation
A picture of pure joy.
• “For a Brooklyn rave wedding, we welcomed 250 guests to a bustling cocktail reception on a rooftop overlooking the Manhattan skyline that was followed by the bride and groom reciting their vows in front of all their guests.” • “For dinner, we passed small plates in addition to serving food stations in a casual, free-seating environment. The party featured dancers dressed in disco ball outfits from a local club, a DJ accompanied by live horns, and late-night pretzels served off umbrellas.”
Wedding Evolution Into the blue.
• “While the list of invited guests is relatively the same as in pre-pandemic days, we’re seeing a lot fewer people RSVP ‘regrets’ to weddings than ever before. Our previous estimates of 10-15 percent falling off the guest list is going down to nearly 5 percent in some cases.” • “Two main reasons we’re seeing this: guests are more excited to celebrate than ever before, but also because invite lists feel a lot more intentional. More people are RSVPing ‘yes’ because they have a genuine connection to the couple.”
Kicking Off the Wedding Weekend
• “I think that all weekend weddings should quietly begin on Thursdays. I love when couples host their immediate families for an intimate dinner before all their guests arrive in town.”
Finding Inspiration
“I’m most inspired by traveling to new places and studying local architecture. Whether it’s colorful doors along the crooked streets of Athens, or the juxtaposition of ancient ruins next to the windows of Gucci in Rome, I find that I’m constantly bringing glimpses of other locations into my everyday life.”
New Discoveries
• “Most of my venues are new to me this year. While I’m working in markets I know, I am enjoying discovering new space and places. This makes for a greatertrust between my couples and me, and challenges me to constantly evolve.” ¢ Feeling the love. 37
PLEASE BEHAVE! Diva bridesmaids, meddling moms, inappropriate in-laws. Here’s how to handle them all, with grace and ease. by Michele Bender
if you didn’t have to deal with friends and families. But it’s a time when everyone’s emotions can run high, explains Sheryl Paul, Boulder, CO-based bridal counselor and author of The Conscious Bride’s Wedding Planner. “Even though you’re the one getting married, it’s also a transition for them,” she says. Adds Jeri Kadison, a bridal coach and an expert in stress management in Teaneck, New Jersey. “Differences of opinion are a natural part of the planning process, and weddings can be stressful. But if you start with good, clear communication, you can keep everyone on the happiness track.” Here, some helpful tips. 38 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Nov/Dec 2023
The Problem ›› MEDDLING MOMS Mother-daughter relationships are complex enough. Add wedding planning to the mix and they get even more so. “A mother’s role in the wedding can touch on financial, emotional and cultural issues,” explains Bethann Schacht, bridal coach and director of Aurora Counseling Associates in Natick, MA. ›› FIGURE OUT THE FINANCIALS If your parents are paying for the wedding, they may do so with strings attached. “My mother wasn’t sold on the wedding planner so she fired her,” says Lily, 24. “It was frustrating, but she was paying so she had the final word.” You and your

WEDDING PLANNING WOULD BE QUITE A HANDFUL EVEN
fiancé should figure out your budget early on and discuss with both sets of parents who will pay for what and how much. If Mom and Dad are kicking in a large amount, ask them how involved they expect to be. If you find out they want a high level of control, you may want to think twice about the arrangements. ›› PICK YOUR BATTLES If you don’t care all that much about the flowers and tablecloths, give those jobs to your mom; if the dress and music are critical to you, take those tasks on as your own. When it comes to her desires versus yours, pick those that matter most to you and address them head on. Simply tell her, “I understand that you want me to wear your wedding dress, but finding my own is really important to me. However, I’d love to wear your earrings,” Kadison says. ›› GO BELOW THE SURFACE “When you’re able to recognize and address the issues underlying your mother’s behavior, the two of you can actually become closer through this process instead of more fractured and resentful,” says Paul. Think about what may be triggering your mother’s behavior; she may feel she’s losing her daughter, or she may be experiencing emotions that have to do with her own marriage. Perhaps she feels she has to plan your wedding because her mother planned hers. Have a heart-to-heart talk. Start by trying this: “Mom, I know this is a really emotional time for you, too. Can we talk about it?”
The Problem ›› INAPPROPRIATE IN-LAWS Everyone is familiar with that old saying, “A daughter is a daughter for life, a son is a son until he finds a wife.” The essence of this saying may be lurking behind your future mother-in-law’s outrageous behavior. “A wedding signifies that it’s time for a son to cut the apron strings and to make his future wife the number-one woman in his life,” says Paul. “A transfer of allegiance from mother to wife takes place and this may not be easy for his mom or his whole family.” ›› INCLUDE THE IN-LAWS Often, in-laws feel left out, pure and
GROOM SERVICE If your fiancé isn’t jumping for joy at the prospect of wedding planning, don’t take it personally. “Many men truly believe that wedding planning is a woman’s realm,” says Schacht.
Give him credit for his efforts. Has he gone the traditional route of choosing a ring on his own, asking your parents for your hand and planning how to pop the question? In that case, by the time you’re engaged, he has done a lot of work, and he may prefer the ball to be in your court.
Divide and conquer. “You may assume that your guy doesn’t want to be part of the process, so you do everything without him. Next thing you know, you resent that he isn’t involved,” says Schacht. Have him take charge of the details that matter to him.
Play as a team. “Often a couple starts out with an idea and then it snowballs. Now, the groom feels his day is nothing like what was discussed,” says Paul. Make sure you’re sticking with your plan. “In the end,” says Schacht, “the details don’t matter as much as the fact that you carried out your plan together.”
simple. This happened to Madeline, 29. “My in-laws were upset that we didn’t invite more of their friends. At the wedding, my mother-in-law acted displeased the whole time. It was mortifying! I think it was her way of getting even.” Though you don’t have to do everything they want, figure out how you can accommodate at least some of their wishes, so you start out on the right foot with your soon-to-be family. ›› BE CLEAR ABOUT THEIR ROLE Not too long ago, there were traditional divisions of wedding responsibilities. For example, the bride’s family paid for the wedding and the groom’s paid for the rehearsal dinner. “But times have changed and these things can’t be assumed anymore,” says Schacht. So sit down with
your in-laws and decide what they will be responsible for. Say something like, “We understand this process can be difficult. But we want everyone to be happy, so let’s agree upon what your roles are now.” “Just don’t ask your soon-to-be mother-inlaw to be your wedding planner. For me, that ended in disaster,” says Beth, 25. ›› LET YOUR FIANCÉ DO THE TALKING If there are issues with the in-laws, let your groom-to-be step in and show his family that the two of you are a team. “It’s part of his transition to manhood and a symbolic start to your life together,” says Paul.
The Problem ›› HIGH-MAINTENANCE BRIDESMAIDS “One of my bridesmaids showed up at my shower with a severe hangover,” says Sara, 30. “And on the wedding day she was late to the hair and makeup session.” When a bridesmaid behaves badly, there may be more going on than meets the eye. ›› ANALYZE YOURSELF FIRST Although you’re probably not making extreme demands, perhaps you’ve gotten a little carried away. “I loved the idea of my maids all having the same hairdo, so I suggested that one of them cut her bangs to match the others,” says Sue, 28. “Later I realized how ridiculous it was and why she seemed so miffed.” ›› PICK A POINT PERSON Choose a go-to gal to be in charge of the bridesmaids. “Have her—not you—be the one to lead the way,” Schacht says. “She’s a neutral party, so it may be easier for her to organize them to plan the shower, for example.” ›› HAVE SOME GIRL TALK “Your ’maid may say that she’s ‘busy,’ but busy may hide her jealousy of your wedding or even disapproval of the groom,” says Schacht. She also may fear your friendship is going to change once you’ve wed. “Be up front,” says Paul. “Try: ‘It seems to be hard for you to be a part of things. I’d like to talk about what’s going on.’ ” If she’s a true friend, she’ll be open to making changes. 39
SMALL MOVES, BIG SAVINGS
TRIMMING THE WEDDING BUDGET DOESN’T HAVE TO AFFECT YOUR BIG-DAY VISION. HERE, EASY AND EFFECTIVE WAYS TO CUT COSTS—WITHOUT SACRIFICING STYLE. BY SHARON NAYLOR
THE DRINKS Beware of stinting too much here. Most people can distinguish a fine wine from a not-so fine one, so take a smarter approach: Schedule a winetasting with your site manager and bar manager, and ask to test well-rated wines. You might decide that the mid-list vintages are the perfect choices for your bar for less money. Ask about any so-called dead stock: for example, a leftover case of New Zealand sauvignon blanc or two cases of a Napa cabernet that they happen to have in stock. You can also save money stylishly by offering

whether it’s by the sea or on a mountaintop, in a garden, a ballroom or on a yacht. Many couples are choosing historic homes with gardens or a friend or relative’s backyard. Go for a nature museum, a Napa Valley winery, a botanical garden or a New England inn. Rates may vary, according to the day of the week and the season, so prepare to negotiate for a good price. Parks can be perfect—and they can be had at low cost. Anything outdoors requires a tent or a backup indoor space. If you have to rent a tent, tables, chairs, a dance floor and other essentials, spend more for better rental items. You don’t want guests sitting on rickety chairs or dining at wobbly tables. Ask the rental agent for a discount for renting more than 50 of each of these items: chairs, tables, china and glasses. You may be able to negotiate for a 10 to 20 percent break on the price.
Remember: The prettier the site–be it gorgeous grounds or a striking interior space– the less you have to spend on decor. 40 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Nov/Dec 2023

Gianna Sam
A late-summer wedding by the sea on Long Island’s East End? Yes please! PHOTOGRAPHS BY MANDA WEAVER PHOTOGRAPHY
Six years after Gianna Schiavone and Samuel Rozzi IV first met—sitting next to each other in a college accounting class—Sam dropped to his knee and proposed. “We were on a walk down by the beach on our street,” Gianna says. “Our typical route, in December at day’s end with our Cavalier, Claudius. It was a perfect moment! Sam had champagne and glasses hidden by the dock, and we celebrated sipping champagne as we watched the sun go down.” Oceanbleu in Westhampton, NY, has also been a big part of the couple’s peregrinations. “It’s a venue Sam and I have been walking past for years,” Gianna says. “Sam’s family has a beach home in Westhampton. It’s a special place to us. I think we always knew at some point we wanted to bring our family and friends here. Celebrating our love there with them meant so much to us!”
54 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Nov/Dec 2023
Gianna’s vision: fun and festive, yet timeless, beautiful and whimsical. “As an interior designer, beauty and life intertwined inspire me. A huge inspiration was the chinoiserie I’ve been collecting for a few years now. It brings me so much joy! I loved being able to draw on that for the bridesmaids’ dresses and flower vases.”
For the ceremony decor, Gianna “wanted the beach grasses and ocean to be the stars. We had a broken arch that allowed the sightline of the sea to remain visible.” Gianna was less decisive about her dress. “I had to have tried on over 100 dresses. It was actually a question during my bridal shower game. It’s safe to say everyone underestimated,” she laughs.
Alix’s love of blue and orange extended to their island transport.

“We incorporated as many family members as possible in the ceremony,” Gianna says. Her uncle served as as the officiant. “Our songs for the ceremony were our parents’ first dance songs. My father-in-law played the bagpipes and joined in with the band for ‘Wagon Wheel,’ the song that closed every bar at our college.”

“I procured these vintage Andrea Sadek dinner plates for our head table, which is where I drew colors for all the florals: pinks, blues, whites and greens,” Gianna says. “It was the perfect whimsical touch. Those and our embroidered napkins are the best wedding keepsakes. Beyond that, the stationery, linens, florals and layered textiles are what truly brought our ‘Oceanside Elegant’ vision to life.”

Tomika and Mike swapped vows in paradise.
TURKS & CAICOS BY JENNA MAHONEY
WHEN A GRIDSKIPPER CAN CHOOSE ANY PLACE IN THE WORLD TO SWAP VOWS, WHERE DOES SHE
go? For Tomika Anderson Green, who grew up as “an army brat” and is founder of a travel group called Single Parents Who Travel, it meant sharing a memorable location with her groom. “I attended a wedding in Turks & Caicos about 20 years ago and said to myself that whenever I got married, it was the place I wanted to be married.” Another factor: “Turks and Caicos has been touted as the home of the number one beach in the entire world!” says Tomika. And two years from the date of their first date, Tomika and Michael jumped the broom at Beaches Turks & Caicos, a luxury family-first resort that was welcoming to their children, friends and family. 72 BRIDALGUIDE.COM Nov/Dec 2023

A LUXE FAMILY-FRIENDLY CARIBBEAN RESORT PROVIDED A HAPPILY-EVER-AFTER SETTING FOR THIS TRAVEL-LOVING COUPLE.
Pre Production
Tomika took full advantage of the test drive offering at Beaches Turks and Caicos, a prewedding visit that gives couples a look at the venue, cuisine and more. “My husband and I visited the destination once together before our wedding,” she says. During the trip— Mike’s first to the island nation—which was six months prior to their big day, they enjoyed the resort and sampled the offerings. “We were able to sit down with the planning team, confirm all the details and sample the wine, the cake, the food, the photography,” explains Tomika.
Tomika and Mike hosted their ceremony on the spectacular Neptune’s Beach.
Their youngest son served as ring bearer.
“The Beaches team walked us through which forms to fill out and by when to officially be married on the island,” says Tomika. They “helped us get them notarized and signed off on by our officiant.” Shine bright like a diamond.

In addition to hosting a spectacular ceremony on the sparkling sands at sunset, Tomika and Mike invited their guests to a welcome party and rum-and-game night. Perched by the photogenic pool adjacent to Neptune’s Beach, the rehearsal dinner featured specialty cocktails, a relaxed vibe and all the love. At the party, guests played board games, sipped sweet rum drinks and enjoyed a DJ-curated playlist. ➺ Vendors were a blend of local and afar.

REAL DESTINATION WEDDING
An Honor
“Mike and I ‘jumped the broom,’ which is a tradition held by many African American families,” says Tomika. “Once a symbolic way for enslaved people in the American South to recognize their marriages, modern couples like us do it as a way to honor those ancestors who did it before us,” she explains.
At Beaches Turks and Caicos “the sunsets there are especially beautiful over the water,” says Tomika. “I chose to have a beach wedding at sunset.” Picture-perfect.
Sea of Love
Providenciales, the capital island of Turks & Caicos is home to one of the most spectacular beaches on the planet—Grace Bay. The strand’s beauty is hyperbolic thanks to its brilliant white sands edged with crystalline turquoise waters. Luxury resort properties line the stretch and many snorkeling excursions leave from this spot. Notable insider tip: The waters are so crystal-clear that you don’t need a mask to spy the vibrant fish. “The biggest activity highlight of our wedding week was a four-hour catamaran sailing and snorkeling tour from Grace Bay,” says Tomika. “It felt awesome to set sail and enjoy swimming and island hopping with each other.”
Moveable Feast
Tomika’s maid of honor assisted in the planning. 74
Marriage licenses are issued at the Registrar’s Office in Providenciales and are required to wed in Turks & Caicos. Couples must apply in person and furnish photo identification, birth certificates and, if applicable, a death certificate or divorce decree. An affidavit of single status, a certificate of no-impediment, an application form for special license, two declaration forms, TCI immigration arrival and departure stamp and a fee of $250 are also required. Couples must be in the country for 48 hours before they can apply.
Seafood fans, the couple invited their guests for a celebratory surf and turf menu at their reception. The cocktail hour featured local favorites including island fritters, coconut breaded shrimp and crabmeat salad, along with signature cocktails “Mai Tai the Knot (groom) and Sparkling Sangria (bride).” While staying on the island after their celebration, they savored the local flavors at The Grill at Grace Bay Club. It’s “not only gorgeous, but the food, including its sushi, is divine,” Tomika says. “It’s expansive, with a mixture of tables and hammocks so guests can spread out. There was a guitarist who sang beautiful love songs the whole time. It felt like a movie.”
