ANSWERS

A

& Q

Wedding

Straight talk, smart solutions by Mary Clarke, Editor in Chief

Q

I plan to take my husband’s last name after we’re married and will notify business clients of the change. What’s the most professional way to do so via email?

A

It’s best to send a mass mailing to clients stating “For future reference, please note my new email and last name, Marisa (maiden name) Wright.” Keep your old email address for a while and if any of your clients continue to use it, notify them again of your new email and name change. Also, be sure to inform the following organizations of your new last name: Social Security (you’ll need an original marriage license for verification), voter registration, credit-card issuers, banks, insurance companies, frequent-flyer programs, utility companies, investment firms and your doctors. And don’t forget to get a new passport and driver’s license. Plus, it’s a good idea to carry two photo IDs with you for a while, one with your maiden name and the other with your married name in case you ever encounter a problem when dealing with any of the above institutions. GUEST PLUS-ONE?

Q A

My fiancé’s parents think everyone invited to a wedding should be able to bring a guest. What’s the rule?

The rule: You don’t need to extend plus-ones to single friends and family members. In fact, most couples don’t— unless they have an unlimited budget. You should, however, include partners of the following: anyone married, engaged or living with a significant other and anyone who is in a long-term relationship.

FLOWER GIRL FEES?

Q

My daughter is going to be a flower girl in my brother’s wedding, and the maid of honor asked if I would like to help pay for the bridal shower. As much as I’d like to participate, we are on a tight budget. Am I expected to contribute to the cost of the shower?

A

No, not at all. The bridal shower is the bridesmaids’ responsibility. The mothers of the bride and groom may also offer to chip in. The parents of the flower girl and ring bearer are only required to pay for their children’s attire, shoes and accessories and any travel or lodging expenses. You can politely decline and offer to help with decorating and setup, if you’re able. Let your brother and his fiancé know about her request. Should there be any grumbling, your future sister-in-law can set the record straight with her attendants. SAVE-THE-DATE QUERY

Q A

On our save-the-date notices, should we ask our guests to RSVP by text or email?

Your save-the-date notices do not require an RSVP. They’re sent simply to alert guests as to the time and place of the wedding so they’ll have ample opportunity to make their travel arrangements. Reply cards are enclosed with the wedding invitation only. However, if you and your fiancé would like to get a rough estimate now, you can follow through with emails or texts. Keep in mind, though, that it may be too early for some people to confirm, so be sure

to get your invitations out four months before the big day (especially if it’s a destination wedding), and ask to have responses in at least 10 weeks before the wedding. That should give you plenty of time to finalize all of the details with your pros. GIFT QUANDARY

Q

What’s the right amount of money for a wedding gift? I don’t want to appear super-cheap, but I’m desperately trying to pay off my student debt.

A

There isn’t a golden rule or any set amount that’s considered appropriate for a wedding gift. Basically, you give what you can afford. With student loans to pay off along with other living expenses, it’s perfectly understandable that you might not be able to be as generous as you’d like. If writing a check makes you feel uncomfortable, then select an item from the couple’s registry that suits your budget. Your friends will love getting a gift they registered for, but more importantly, they’ll be glad you were there on the big day to share in their celebration. ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. ADVICE

ON HOLIDAY

T

Thinking about nuptials on Memorial Day weekend, Valentine’s or New Year’s? Here’s what celebrations expert David Tutera has to say.

I Do’s for a Gala New Year’s Eve Wedding • Always check with the venue you are interested in to

make sure it’s available—many often open their doors to the public to host their own event on New Year’s Eve. • If you’re planning a New Year’s Eve wedding, keep in mind

that your reception time should start later than normal, as you want to make sure you are also celebrating the turn of the New Year with your guests when the clock strikes twelve. • Black-tie will make this night extra special. Or be extra

fabulous and throw a glamorous masquerade wedding! • To tie in the theme of this night, decor ideas could

include crystals, color, sparkle, props and even bubbles to celebrate the two special occasions.

HOLIDAY WEDDING DO’S & DON’TS • DO give as much notice as possible to your guests through save-the-date cards. People often plan vacations around the holidays so you may have more guest declines than expected. • DO make sure printed matter from save-the-dates to escort and thank-you cards visually connect to the holiday and season. • DON’T play holiday music at your reception. You want your guests to feel they are at a wedding, not a big holiday party. • DON’T forget that costs of vendors and travel may be higher. Flowers always cost more in winter months and during holidays such as Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day. Hotels and airfare are more costly during peak vacation times, too—which can be financially inconvenient for out-of-town guests. 

PHOTOGRAPHY: (TOP RIGHT) MIKI & SONJA PHOTOGRAPHY

here are many pros and cons to having your wedding on notable holidays: Valentine’s Day, the Fourth of July, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve are all memorable days that can make your celebration even more special (and ensure you never, ever forget your anniversary!). I personally believe your wedding should be a special day of celebration on JULY FOURTH its own and set apart from anything else. But if you have your heart Keep it summer-perfect in set on a holiday wedding, here are a few tips to keep in mind. clean shades of white Your goal should be to own the holiday-inspired theme with minimal color accents. without going overboard and focusing on just the holiday. Instead, make subtle nods to the special day that you are sharing your wedding with. It’s very important to let your wedding be about style, color and you as a couple… VALENTINE'S DAY not the holiday itself. Go with nuanced To keep a personal feel, decor and embellishshades of blush, ments should drive the concept and not the holiday. garnet and red. For example, utilize elements available in the season: Winter spices, spring flowers, summer beaches or the fall harvest are all great ways to incorporate the time of year without being too literal. NEW YEAR'S EVE If you feel strongly about incorporating holiday Glam it up with black, colors into your decor, don’t go overboard. For white and gold. instance, for a July 4th wedding, try to choose just blues and whites—if you prefer red, choose a deep burgundy and use it sparingly, just as an accent. difficult to nail down, too. That said, one advantage is that some Red, garnet and blush are all Valentine-perfect shades. guests will see this as perfect timing since they won’t have to take Weekends like Memorial Day, which for most people is consid- off personal days from work if they need to travel to your nuptials. ered the first official weekend of the summer, can be challenging Others, however, may be put off because they cannot attend due to due to the popularity of family travel—accommodations can be a yearly family vacation or reunion (as these are popular weekends for family travel). There are 7.6 billion people in this world, and the fact that two people found one another and have decided to build and share a life together is so magical. I could not think of anything more amazing to do!”

“Details matter no matter the size of the guest count,” Jove says.

Favorite moments from pre-pandemic weddings

• “There are so many favorite moments I miss, from packed, late-night sweaty dance-floor moments to hugging my couples and their families. You do not realize how close you get to your couples until you are not allowed to touch them, and have to be 6 feet away from them!”

“Time is precious and love matters most,” says Jove.

Clients have learned to expect the unexpected from Jove Meyer Events, based in Brooklyn, NY. “My weddings stand out because they are the opposite of ‘traditional’ and or ‘classic’ weddings,” says Jove. “They break the mold of what a wedding ‘should’ look like and dare couples to showcase their love authentically.” “I am also known as an activist for inclusivity and equality in our industry,” says Jove, “and proud to be powered by partnerships with fellow small businesses owned and operated by women, people of color, and queer people.”

• “I miss watching the wedding come to life, the transformation of a blank space into the wedding of my couples’ dreams. I miss seeing my creative partners, and watching them make their magic in person. I miss the people-to-people relationships with everyone!”

The backdrop that never gets old, New York, New York.

Favorite “new normal” moments

• “For our Zoom weddings we made sure to send all our guests custom invitations, and gift boxes filled with items for them to enjoy along with the couple, from cake and champs to sweet and savory snacks!” • “It was easy to keep it simple when it came to intimate ceremonies with no in-person guests, but we wanted to make sure the couple felt they were being celebrated. So we created some amazing ceremony backdrops to honor the special moment, such as a beautiful circle arch from Mimosa Floral Design for a memorable private lakefront wedding.”

Silver linings

•“I learned that time is precious and love matters the most. While weddings were canceled and/or postponed, love was not canceled and never will be!” • “2020 gave me time I did not have before, and in that time I got creative in designing Norsdale, a colorful Catskills escape that can accommodate groups of up to 18 guests. Created by myself and two friends in creative fields, Nick Harris and Tim Harrison, our goal was to create a new experience in hospitality that was not only bold in design but thoughtful in the details.” • Planning in 2020 was for the most part the same as in other years, but double or triple the work, given the uncertainty of the pandemic. Our partners have been amazing in their flexibility and generosity in these unprecedented times.”

Looking Ahead

“I am looking forward to the return of in-person celebrations. A year of no in-person weddings was not easy. You do not know what you miss until it is gone and I miss weddings and events terribly, and am so looking forward to being back at it with my creative partners and couples! I am looking forward to hearing vows, watching couples dance, families dance, hearing toasts—both the good and bad ones—and getting back to what I love!” ➺

SNEH DIWAN, founder + creative director, Diwan by Design

A beautifully draped mandap.

As nimble in hosting intimate microweddings as well as large-scale celebrations with up to 800 guests, Jersey City, NJ based Diwan by Design, is especially renowned for visually spectacular South Asian wedding events, a series of jubilant festivities steeped in the rituals and traditions of the bride and groom’s families’ culture. In riding the roller coaster of the pandemic of 2020, Sneh says, “I have always asked my clients, ‘What are the three things you cannot live without for your wedding?’ Before the pandemic couples might say food, music, decor. Now it has shifted to specific moments, such as father/daughter dance, exchanging vows and having my grandparents attend. Based on their answers, we do whatever we can to make that happen.”

Why I love weddings

“I love seeing a story come to life! From the first conversation to creating mood boards, site visits, building a vendor team, and finally the execution! Every wedding is different, with its own traditions. Seeing the smiles (and happy tears) on the couple’s faces and feeling the love in the room when friends and family come together to celebrate is truly a feeling that never gets old.”

Favorite moments from pre-pandemic weddings

• “One highlight of traditional South Asian weddings is the baraat, the groom’s procession. The procession is an event unto itself.

Scenes from an engagement session.

It starts in the morning, with the groom’s side of the family, his friends, groomsmen, DJ and dihol player (drummer) gathered outside the venue, awaiting the groom’s grand entrance. It is a dramatic moment. Some memorable groom processions have also included colorful smoke bombs, creating magical clouds of color, which look great in photos!” • “I also love when the bride and groom see each other for the first time. In Hindu traditions the bride’s hands and feet are decorated with henna designs, mehndi, typically two days before the wedding. Mehndi represents marriage and good luck. It is said that the deeper the hue of the mehndi after it dries, the deeper the love between the couple.”

Symbolic jewelry abounds in South Asian weddings.

Beautifully garlanded, bejeweled and barefoot.

• “Though it was challenging, couples were more open to new ways to create special intimate moments without losing the glamour and romance you expect to experience in a wedding.” • “For one memorable micro-wedding, we completely transformed the backyard, so that you felt like you were stepping into a magical dream world. We covered the pool with flooring, built out the tent, and lit it with chandeliers and twinkling fairy lights. The couple was married in a small private ceremony with parents and siblings in attendance, and the sister of the groom officiating. • Another resourceful couple made their celebration personally meaningful starting with a beautiful engagement session around NYC, stopping at different locations where they had shared a fond memory. On the following day they celebrated their love and love of the water with a private ceremony on a boat cruise around Manhattan.”

Universal truths

• “No matter how big or small the celebration is, as a planner, our work remains the same. We still put in the same amount of attention to detail, sourcing the right vendors, building a timeline, and making sure everything runs smoothly.”

Looking ahead

“I look forward to not having to factor in additional time for temperature checks for all the guests/vendors at the wedding—there is already enough stress on the wedding day. And being able to hug my clients again!”  Ahoy! This couple arrived for their backyard wedding in high style.

INSPIRATION

Big Ideas for Small Weddings Elopement expert and photographer Sam Starns tells you how to reimagine your wedding and turn it into an unforgettable adventure.

I

The guest list. No matter what, you’ll have to trim it. How much depends on your comfort level. Do you want 5-10 of your closest friends and family there or just the two of you? Either way, fewer guests open up more possibilities. You can have a ceremony in places where 100 people would never fit. Want to go crazy and have a ceremony in a hot-air balloon? There are hot-air balloons and wedding packages that can accommodate 12 people. Do you see where we’re going? The possibilities are close to endless. Focus on the adventure, not the wedding. Couples who want to have an intimate adventure wedding or elopement often make a major misstep when dreaming up their day. They think about the wedding first, and the experience second. I strongly advise against this. Because couples often end up thinking “our ‘best day ever’ sort of adventure involves a horseback ride or a helicopter ride—but with the dress and tux? How would we do that logistically? We’ll just stick to a nice park or something.” Think of your “best day ever” sort of adventure first and foremost. Think of a day that

represents the two of you as a couple, no matter what that is. Because why shouldn’t your wedding day HINT: Think about what be a day that is a you love to do. What reflection of your ignites that spark within? Is it something adrenaline relationship? And packed, like parasailing? I guarantee that Or is it more sedate, like a peaceful walk through there is a way to the redwoods? incorporate wedding attire and a ceremony in things that are already nearly any adventure. Horsesignificant to the two of you? back riding adventure? It’s possible. Helicopter? Easy An arguably even more important question is this: peasy. Hike to a backcountry How do you want to feel chalet? 100% doable. Off-road and what do you want to jeep tour? Also yes.

Dig deep into what represents you. We’ve touched a little on this already, but it bears further delving. This doesn’t just include activities, but we’ll start there. Think about what you love to do, or what you would love to do. What ignites that spark within? Is it something adrenaline packed, like parasailing or a helicopter ride? Does it involve animals, like a horseback ride or a camel trek through Morocco? Or is it more sedate, like a peaceful walk through the redwoods followed by a picnic? Do you like trying new experiences, or would you prefer to have a fantastic day doing

experience on your wedding day? I encourage you to look past the obvious words like carefree, relaxed and happy. Get out your thesaurus and look up more alternatives. And these words don’t have to be typical adjectives like “wild” or “adventurous,” etc. They can describe a visual you see and feel. Some sample words to get you started:

Untamed...Free-spirited... Laughter-filled... Organic...Exhilarating... Quaint...Emotive Rocky...Mountainous... Paradise...New...Luxurious This word exercise will also help reveal what backdrop and

location best fits your vision. With ever-changing travel restrictions, you may not be planning any far-flung travel abroad, but there are a plethora of wedding-perfect locales to be found right here in the U.S., from rocky mountain peaks, to lush tropical forests, to vast red deserts, urban sprawls and everything in between. So, what are you waiting for? Use this time as a reason to go out there and create an adventure. Then use that as your backdrop to commit yourselves to one another. Downsizing your wedding doesn’t have to mean a quick courthouse wedding. It can mean the first amazing adventure of many, with your partner by your side. But hear me out: What if your wedding day wasn’t going to be what you imagined, but better? I want to talk about how to downsize your wedding and instead turn it into an adventure that you’ll look back on 30 years from now and say, “Damn, that was a great experience.” Let’s focus on the three main steps of turning a larger wedding into an adventure.

YOU’RE ENGAGED! NOW WHAT? OUR ULTIMATE PLANNING GUIDE LAYS OUT EVERY STEP, FROM SPREADING THE WORD TO TAMING THE GUEST LIST.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

GET ORGANIZED Set up a spreadsheet or notebook with sections for each budget category. This way you can input the amount you want to spend on each item and then note your expenditures. As you near your limits, you can start to figure out ways to cut costs.

SET YOUR SITES CEREMONY SPECIFICS. Finding an officiant and a ceremony site can be simple—if, say, you wish to marry in your hometown house of worship. Even if you’re no longer living in the area, you may have family who still are and can help out. Sometimes for the sake of convenience, couples choose a place that’s in between their homes and their parents’. And then there’s the destination wedding: Just make sure that everyone you really want to join you and your groom can afford to travel and is able to make it.

THE RECEPTION VENUE. Think again

about those wedding dreams, and see how they mesh with reality. Perhaps you envision a lush outdoor garden abloom with pink and white flowers. Fine, but what if you can’t find just the right place or the weather is an issue? Maybe there’s a quaint hotel with a pretty courtyard that would suit. Some couples find historic homes in their area to rent. Use local resources to narrow down options: a wedding planner or a recently married friend. Check wedding websites and bridal magazines. Then start scheduling visits.

PHOTOGRAPHY: CORINNE GRAVES PHOTOGRAPHY

• MAKE THE ANNOUNCEMENT. Some couples just don’t feel right if anyone knows their big news before their parents and other close family members do. If possible, tell both sets of folks in person. If your parents don’t live nearby, put in a special phone call. • DELVE INTO DREAMS. Sit down with your fiancé and talk ideas. Think about the style you envision, whether it’s a beach bash, a sit-down dinner in a ballroom or a ceremony on a mountaintop. No talk of money. Yet. • ROUGH OUT THE TIMING. While you don’t have to set a firm date now, it’s smart to have an idea of what month or season you want to marry in. Then you’ll know how long you have to get things organized. Because your wedding’s size determines where you’ll hold the party, how much it will cost (prices usually rise per guest) and whether travel will be involved, creating a guest list is one of the most important things to do. So make your list; your fiancé and both families should do the same. You can, and likely will, cut later, but this first number will be your base. • NOW TALK MONEY. It’s rare these days that the bride’s parents pick up the whole bill, so decide on your bottom line. Find out from both sets of parents if or how much they can contribute.

KNOW YOUR PROS Here’s how to hire the best. PHOTOGRAPHY: (WEDDING PARTY) LAUREN FAIR PHOTOGRAPHY; (TABLE) PHOTOGRAPHY: CORINNE GRAVES PHOTOGRAPHY

• PHOTOGRAPHER AND VIDEOGRAPHER. The best ones

usually book weddings many months in advance, so get on this one early. Get recommendations from friends, then research what kinds of shots you’d like to see—formal portraits and dancing shots or a candid, journalistic format. Always ask to see other wedding albums the pro has done. • MUSICIANS. Arrange to hear musicians perform before you sign them on. Make sure they agree to stick to the playlist you give them, including any “do not play” tunes. Find out how they will dress and how many breaks they will take. Hiring a DJ is usually less expensive than a live band, but not always. • FLOWERS AND DECOR. Once you have your reception site booked, you can decide on table QUICK TIP arrangements and other decorations. A hotel Not sure what kind of ballroom might be a relatively blank slate, album you want? Look for photographers with whereas a museum may need little more than a looser style and many simple centerpieces. If you can buy fresh stems package choices on offer. You don’t have to at a local farm, ask a talented friend to help make up your mind right put together bouquets and centerpieces. Or ask away. After the wedding, you may even want to your florist to incorporate tons of greenery to get creative and make make fewer flowers look like a lot more. your own album. • CATERER. You want to know how dishes will taste and look and how flexible the caterer is with menus and prices. Don’t be afraid to bargain; you can cut costs by limiting the number and kinds of hors d’oeuvres served at cocktail hour.

MAIDEN VOYAGE When choosing your attendants, follow these tips: • Explain to prospective bridesmaids what the role requires, like

planning the shower and paying for their attire. • Tell each ’maid that she’ll need to commit a certain amount of

time and energy—and if she can’t, it’s fine for her to decline. • Choose as many or as few bridesmaids as you want. • Give your closest friend or relative the maid of honor position. • Include a female relative of your groom in your bevy of bridesmaids; it’s a diplomatic move that can only strengthen family relations.

ATTIRE ADVICE It’s not strictly necessary to know wedding place and time details before you shop. Whereas fashion guidelines were more rigid in the past (not wearing a glittery sheath for a daytime wedding, for example), the rules are looser now. But check with your house of worship; some require covered shoulders or heads. Start shopping whenever you feel pumped—and don’t forget to have your guy rent formalwear for himself and his groomsmen. ➺

ON THE MONEY offering one signature drink (like a gourmet martini) along with beer, soda and juices. Another idea: Buy cases of a favorite local wine and serve just that. ➍ LIMIT THE LIMOS. It’s nice to pull up to the ceremony location in a sleek limo or classic car, but consider skipping the rides elsewhere to save money. Instead have your brother or a cousin chauffeur you and your new hubby to the reception. ➎ DON’T GO FLOWER MAD. There are plenty of ways to keep your bill from blooming: Buy flowers wholesale and give them to a florist to work with or create centerpieces that use candles and just a few beautiful blooms. A profusion of petals looks lush and lovely, but keep in mind you can get the same effect with fewer flowers than you think. ➏ AVOID IMPULSE BUYING. Got everything on your list? Then stop shopping. If you’ve already bought your bridesmaids lovely shawls, and you see pretty handbags that would match… and sparkly earrings…put them down.

DRESS SHOPPING • ERASE THE EMOTION. If you were the girl who pinned towels in her hair to play bride, you may need extra help with this step. Pulling the emotion out of the event and remaining level-headed as you shop for your dress will help you stay within the bounds of both budget and practicality. If it helps, bring your mom and a down-to-earth pal along with you. • KNOW WHAT KIND OF SHOPPER YOU ARE. Some brides relish the hunt for the ideal dress, and happily book a number of appointments at bridal salons. They like having a salesperson who offers ideas and selects gown styles for them. Others would really love to just slip into a store (a department store, a specialty boutique, a secondhand shop) and find their dress hanging there on the rack. Both ways are possible. Decide which kind of shopper you are, and work accordingly. • DON’T SECOND-GUESS YOURSELF. Think you’ve found The One? Then you probably have. Look no further—and relax.

QUICK TIP It’s likely everyone will be going snap-happy with their camera phones. To avoid ending up with 300 nearly identical shots, give guests a few ideas (print up a card to place on each table). Suggest one photo of each couple at the table, some goofy dance pics and a surprise shot of their choice—all to be shared later.

Wedding budgets have a way of expanding like a balloon. Keep yours from popping (and give yourself some wiggle room for those unexpected expenses or must-haves) by reining in spending. Here, six smart saving tips: ➊ BORROW. Did you totally love the tiara your sister wore? Borrow it for your ensemble! You can borrow jewelry (just like the stars do at Oscar time) and other accessories, honeymoon luggage (no reason to splurge on new suitcases if your parents have good stuff), vases for centerpieces (if you’re doing these yourself) and so on. ➋ USE PEOPLE’S DIY SKILLS. If your aunt is a sewing whiz, she can create a veil or even do alterations on your dress. A skilled artist can create personalized invitations. A crafty pal can come up with a fun favor. An avid scrapbooker can put together an album for you. Just let them know this will be their wedding gift to you. ➌ CREATE A SIGNATURE DRINK. If you’re tempted to save by having a cash bar, stop! Instead, cut down on liquor costs by

TAME THAT GUEST LIST When you pay a caterer by the head, every guest is a ka-ching on the total bill—not just for the food and drink, but also for tips and taxes, which rise accordingly. Here are some ways to keep the list under control: • DON’T INVITE THE WHOLE OFFICE—either

just ask your boss and your closest friends at work or no one at all. • DON’T DIG INTO YOUR OLD ADDRESS BOOK

for blasts from the past; stick to those people you see regularly. • REIN IN PARENTS. They can invite their friends,

but they don’t have to ask the garden club and the tennis buddies and the former neighbors.

HOW INVITING Your invitations should be sent out six to eight weeks before the big day, so work backward from there to be sure you order in time. The basic invite announces the hosts of the wedding (whether that’s the two of you, your parents or a combination) and the place and time of the ceremony. It may include a card that gives the reception details, a reply card and envelope. Have a sample of the invite in hand before deciding to use it—and proofread! Never include registry information with your invitation.

PHOTOGRAPHY: (INVITATIONS) CORINNE GRAVES PHOTOGRAPHY; (CAKE) DANIELLE COONS PHOTOGRAPHY

PIECES OF THE PIE No matter what your wedding budget may be, here’s a rough idea of how much is typically spent in each category. Keep in mind that the numbers are not hard and fast. Some couples may, for example, choose to spend more on photography and less on flowers. It’s completely up to you!

• Reception: 40% • Engagement rings and wedding bands: 6% • Photography and videography: 10.5% • Invitations: 2%

• Wedding attire: 7% • Flowers: 5% • Music: 5% • Miscellaneous: 10% • Honeymoon: 14.5%

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SAMPLE OF YOUR INVITE IN HAND BEFORE DECIDING WHETHER OR NOT TO USE IT— AND REMEMBER TO PROOFREAD, PROOFREAD, PROOFREAD!

ALL ABOUT YOU It’s easy to become so caught up in the planning that you forget one simple thing: you! So start now to create and stick to a self-care plan. EXERCISE REGULARLY AND KEEP TO A HEALTHY DIET. Even a 30-minute walk several times a week can be enough to keep you feeling energetic. To prevent fatigue, take a mul-

tivitamin everyday, especially if you’re skipping meals. Bring healthy snacks—almonds, a banana—along with you when you go shopping or to work. GET PLENTY OF SLEEP. Most brides-to-be find themselves having some late nights, but try your best not to skimp on sleep; not getting enough contributes to lowered immu-

nity, and you don’t want to get sick now. Plus, well-rested gals always look their best. MEET WITH A HAIRSTYLIST. If you want to maintain your current cut and/or color, tell your regular hairstylist, and be sure you’re not due for an appointment the week before your big day (you should ideally have your hair cut and colored a couple of

weeks prior). If this stylist will do your hair for the wedding, see her for a practice session or two to try a couple of hairdos. (If you’re wearing a headpiece or tiara, bring it along.) PRACTICE MAKEUP. Most stores will give you free makeovers; tell them you’re getting married and they’ll go all out.

MONEY TALK WE WENT TO THE SOURCE—YOU—FOR YOUR BOTTOM-LINE BEST IDEAS AND SAVING STRATEGIES. BY ELENA DONOVAN MAUER

REUSE & RECYCLE “Go online and look at ‘for sale’ items on local boards. I found someone selling used votive holders and got a deal on a box of them. I had to remove the ribbons she had on hers, because they didn’t match my decorations, but that bit of extra work was worth it.” —Lynda, Sterling, VA

SHOP IN UNEXPECTED PLACES “I thought I’d find our favors in a craft store or at a wedding website, but I spotted some really pretty scented candles at a discount department store for under $2 each. We asked the store to order them in bulk for us, then added personalized matchbooks and put them in white boxes with a monogrammed sticker. I think they I always admired a good friend’s handcame in at about $3.50 apiece towriting, so I asked her tal. It was so much fun to do these to address my wedding invitations. She was things ourselves.”—Melissa, Greenville, NC honored to pitch in.

—Janet, Hancock, VT

Personalize, Affordably “There are lots of ways to personalize your wedding, and not all of them cost a great deal. I had cocktail napkins printed with our names and wedding date. It cost less than $30 for a huge number, and that one little touch made me really happy.” —Jeanette, Reston, VA

Work Your Contacts

“My friend’s sister is starting a business designing invitations, so she made ours for free. All she asked was that she could keep some to show future clients. They looked so beautiful, we had one framed.” —Amie, Moon, PA “My friend, who is a florist’s assistant, designed bouquets for my bridesmaids and for me. It not only saved cash, but the fact that she created the bouquets for us also made them feel very special.” —Jeanette “Through an acquaintance from college, I found a photographer whose career was just getting off the ground. She was reasonably priced.” —Lynda

Set the Stage

“We had our wedding in my small hometown, rather than in New York City, not for sentimental reasons but because we quickly found out it costs about half as much to rent event space there! The added bonus was that my family was very happy.” —Diana, New York City

COMPARE RENTING AND OWNING “We rented our centerpieces from the reception venue for a low fee. They were wrought-iron hurricane lamps with pillar candles inside— perfect for our nauticalstyle theme!” —Leah, Dorchester, MA

“Before you assume that renting will be more affordable, do a little research. My florist wanted me to spend $5 a pop to rent her vases. Instead, I bought mine from a wholesale supplier for about $2 apiece. —Emily, Pittsburgh, PA

DO SOME DRESS DIGGING “Shhh! It’s a secret! I bought my dress off the rack. It had been tried on by other people, but it looked just like any other dress— and it only cost me $200!” —Amie “Finding something more upscale in your price range is usually possible— it just takes some extra work. I saved money on my designer dress by purchasing it at a trunk show. Don’t be afraid to shop around!” —Jena, Philadelphia, PA

Find a Creative Alternative “I nixed a wedding video and used a small portion of what I would have spent on it to rent a photo booth—it was between $500 and $600. Guests had so much fun getting their pictures taken with props. We now have a really cute album with photos and messages from everyone!” —Emily

“We decided to skip the wedding cake. It’s a tradition in my family for relatives to bake homemade sweets to serve at a buffet at the reception. With all those amazing cookies, we didn’t really need a cake.” —Jeanette

We kept costs down by holding our wedding at a public park—the same place where my parents had their wedding reception!

Be Selective About the Extras

“Our site offered a convenient package deal that provided everything we needed for the kind of wedding we envisioned. If you wanted, you could choose to upgrade to matching colored napkins or add decorative chair covers, but we didn’t feel it was necessary. We were happy with what was offered, so that’s what we did. It was awesome!” —Jeanette “There are a lot of things brides are convinced they need to buy. I kept seeing decorated card boxes to display at the reception, but in the end, I decided to make one myself. I bought a plain ivory satin box from a craft store, added pretty silk flowers in autumn hues that matched my bouquet and then topped it with a rhinestone monogram letter. All in all, I think it probably cost $30, and my mom and I both thought it looked much better than the pre-made ones!” —Emily

TIME IT RIGHT “Because we decided to hold our wedding on a Saturday at noon, the site fee was a real bargain. We served the meal buffetstyle and had open seating. I think people enjoyed the relaxed feel of it because everyone really let loose!” —Beverly, Leonia, NJ

BE CHARITABLE

“At the end of the night, most wedding favors get left behind or thrown away! So we decided to make a donation to our town’s Salvation Army. It felt great to help a local charity, and it probably cost a bit less than conventional favors since we didn’t have to buy fancy packaging or pay shipping costs.” —Emily

Entertain the Possibilities “My brother is really into music, and he used his laptop to DJ at our reception. All we did was rent speakers. We came up with a playlist together, which was fun, and he was happy to handle the rest. We’re into indie music, so it was nice to be able to hear so many of our favorite songs, which are kind of offbeat, along with more popular stuff to keep our guests happy!” —Jennifer, Jersey City, NJ

—Brandie, La Mirada, CA

ASK FOR SPECIAL TREATMENT “Some photographers don’t give you the copyright to your photos, but I negotiated to get all the high-resolution image files to reproduce as we like. I was able to design my album using a photo-sharing website. I think I spent no more than $60 on the album, and it turned out just perfectly.” —Jennifer “We saved a lot by choosing a sparsely decorated site. To spruce it up, I wanted to hang puff balls made of colorful tissue paper. You can buy a craft kit to make these decorations, but instead I found tissue paper in bulk and purchased floral wire from a craft store. Then I invited a few close friends over. We made dozens of decorations. Don’t be afraid to ask for help—if you need something assembled, just offer dinner or drinks!” —Lynda “We printed our invitations at home from a kit that I found on clearance at a craft store for under $50. Luckily, I happened to love the ones on sale. If you’re going to go this route, though, I would recommend breaking up the project over a few evenings. Our printer overheated!” —Jeanette

he moment: “We met at Tony’s Restaurant in Houston, where Austin is now executive chef, and where I was an intern,” says Shannon, owner of The Everyday Bakeshop and Heirloom Interactive. They spent only a day working together before Shannon moved away briefly, then the two of them met up again serendipitously when Shannon moved back to Houston. “The timing was meant to be,” she says. “We have not been apart since.” A sweet backyard proposal after two and a half years of dating set the planning wheels in motion. “We picked Jackson Hole for our wedding on a whim. It turns out my grandfather had taken my father there as a young boy. When we heard that, we knew it was the perfect setting.”

Personal Touches • The couple created all the paper goods themselves, from initial design to crafting pressed flowers and wax seals for the invitations. • The couple’s guest book was a cookbook. “Perfectly fitting, as we are both foodies,” Shannon laughs.

Reasons to Shop at Your Local Bridal Salon

The YES Moment

You,ve probably been dreaming of this day for a long time—with good reason! There is no greater feeling than trying on a wedding gown and seeing yourself as a bride for the very first time. Surrounded by friends and loved ones makes the YES moment that much sweeter! Selection

Make the Dress Your Own

Bridal salons offer the largest selection of reputable designers, styles, and colors.Your consultant will work directly with the designer to ensure everything from the color, to the fabric and the fit, are exactly what you envision.

The dress you try on in the store is just a starting point. Want to add a sleeve? Lower the back? Elongate the train? At a traditional bridal salon, you can work with a seamstress to customize your gown and turn your dream into a reality.

Feel-Good Factor

Special Pricing

When you buy from a trusted, local bridal salon, you not only support your community, but also small businesses mostly owned by women!

No Surprises You get what you pay for. A designer dress may be pricier than similar versions online, but counterfeit gowns can be poorly constructed, ill-fitting, and made out of cheap fabrics, if you receive your gown at all.

If budget is a concern, there are many ways to shop smart at a local salon. Many brick-and-mortar stores offer discounts at designer trunk shows, and host sample sales annually.

So Much More Than Just the Gown Your trained consultant will take precise measurements, assist with alterations, and put you at ease throughout the entire process. The salon will even steam your gown and store it safely until your wedding day!

RESORT ROUNDUP The tequila resort— Matices Hotel de Barricas.

IN THE SPIRIT

THESE POSH PROPERTIES PROMISE AN EXTRA SHOT OF FUN WITH BEER, WINE AND MORE MADE ON SITE. BY JENNA MAHONEY

Matices Hotel de Barricas There’s a saying, and it’s not very favorable, about getting into and staying at a bottle of tequila, but at this picturesque spot in the heart of the tequila-making region of Mexico, you can actually sleep in one of the 39 whimsically surreal tequila “barrels” dotting the property. Inside, the rooms feature handmade tiles and touches influenced by the agave plant. The on-site dining room is accessed via the distillery and showcases the best in Mexico’s regional cuisines (room rates start at about $677 a night; tequilacofradia.com.mx). AKA Rittenhouse Square At the foot of Philadelphia’s most treasured plaza stands this urban-chic hideaway in a historic building that caters to longer stays of a week to months at a time. Accommodations are modern, sleek and sophisticated with marble bathrooms and kitchenettes and neutral palettes and furnishings flaunting mid-century-inspired straight lines. Amenities include a gym, meeting spaces and use of the house Tesla. The bar is notable for its bespoke vodka called a. vod. The low-fi spirit is distilled in batches of no more than 90. The result is a smooth vodka best enjoyed on the rocks (room rates start at $240 a night, one-week minimum; stayaka.com).

FUN FACT: Vodka is the most consumed liquor by volume in the United States since 1970. It was widely introduced the states when Russia became an ally in the Second World War.

Commerce Street Brewery Hotel in Wisconsin.

Commerce Street Brewery Hotel In a restored limestone building dating to 1854 in a small town in one of the country’s most celebrated beer-making states, sits an intimate hotel of five individually appointed rooms located above a brewery specializing in ales and stouts. Guests may come for the beer, but they stay for the historic offerings in Mineral Point, a mining hotspot that was once bigger than Chicago and is called the “place where Wisconsin began.” There’s an antique railroad depot and a renovated opera house. Pendarvis, a collection of Cornishstyle cottages built in the city’s boomtown days, is the most popular attraction (room rates start at $155 a night and include breakfast; commercehotel.com).

same name stands this haute hotel that’s as British as Burberry and as hip as Harry Styles. The design is all sleek and modern Brit inspired by decorator to the Royals, David Hicks. The three London suites have enormous marble bathrooms, private terraces and retractable roofs that promise spectacular city views. The clubby 108 Brasserie with its classicmeets-modern menu also showcases an inventive cocktail program. The star of the spirits offerings is seasonal botanical-infused gin distilled in the on-site and totally instagrammable copper still named Isabella (room rates start at about $460 a night; doylecollection.com). The Cavalier Virginia Beach, an Autograph Hotel.

The Cavalier Virginia Beach First unveiled in 1927, this grande dame beach hotel recently underwent a massive renovation. Known as the only in-hotel distillery in the United States, the Tarnished Truth Room has been crafting bourbon whiskey since the property’s opening. Much of the whiskey’s history is culled from the yarns woven by the bootleggers who did their distilling in the shadows of the night under the cover of cypress and oak trees. Today’s batches are boiled and cooled in bespoke copper and brass equipment and casked in barrels of local woods. Tours of the intimate operation are available, as are the spirits and infused items like bourbon maple syrup and candles. Misted and verdant with ordered rows of vines, flowers and farms, and photogenically framed by the impressive Cascade mountains of Oregon, the 150-mile expanse of the Willamette Valley was named an AVA (American Viticultural Area) in 1983. Today, the celebrated region encompasses more than 500 wineries and is most known for awardwinning pinot noir, as well as pinot gris, pinot blanc and chardonnay. Among the sun-kissed hills of the wine country sits this full-service resort of 85 accommodations. An on-site winery casks pinot noir and pinot gris exclusively savored in the hotel’s farm-to-fork eatery, Jory. he spirit of Aloha—it’s tranquil and breezy, warm and welcoming—infuses all aspects of Hawaiian life. And the feeling of oneness with nature, family and community extends to marriage celebrations throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Here are some of our favorite spots to get lei’d.

MONTAGE KAPALUA BAY Set on four lush acres of Maui, affording privacy, endless tropical foliage and awesome views of neighboring Lanai and Molokai islets, this modern-meets-Aloha traditional property offers 50 one- to fourbedroom villa accommodations. Weddings here are hosted at the refurbished wood-planked circa 1940s Kapalua’s Cliff House. The breezy building is fittingly positioned on a rocky outcropping over the eponymous bay (wedding packages start at $7,500 and include an officiant and ceremony setup for 10 guests, a wedding cake, lei exchange and champagne toast; montagehotels.com).

GRAND WAILEA MAUI, A WALDORF ASTORIA RESORT On Maui’s brilliant white sands is an aptly named luxury property with all the happily-ever-after amenities for romance. Among the gorgeous spa and outstanding eateries, the sparkling pools and

towering palms sits a photogenic white clapboard chapel that’s positioned on a waterway and has gorgeous views of the tropical foliage-rich grounds. Ceremonies may also be hosted at the private Molokini Bluff with its uninterrupted vistas of classic Hawaii and ocean scenery (wedding packages start at $7,500 and include site fees, an officiant and wedding-planning services; grandwailea.com).

ANDAZ MAUI AT WAILEA RESORT The chic hotel brand has made a splash with this sleek beachfront hotel on the state’s most popular island with its hip pool, cool restaurants and mod design. Ceremonies here are most often held on the pretty lawns that overlook the onlyin-Maui ocean and neighboring islands. Receptions are hosted in charming spaces with wood accents or outside and lit by torches (wedding packages start at $9,500 and include ceremony setup and site fees, an officiant and wedding-

Of all of Hawaii’s beautiful resorts, this low-rise vintage property with its renowned architecture and celebrated art collection is one of the most prized. It’s a haven for aesthetes as much as it is for beach lovers, foodies and active travelers thanks to its position on one of the most spectacular coves in the country, amazing cuisine and robust fitness programming that includes tennis, golf and yoga. Weddings here reflect the understated elegance of the property, with many opting for the micro offerings that showcase the pristine property’s natural beauty and bountiful food program (wedding packages start at $7,500 ceremony setup and site fees, an officiant and wedding-planning services, photography, bridal bouquet, boutonniere and lei exchange, some music, a cake and more; maunakeabeachhotel.com).¢

Legally Wedded In Hawaii, most resorts help with the paperwork and some include transportation to the Health Department (that is where marriage licenses are issued) in the wedding package. The couple must both be present to apply. Each must furnish, along with the application, a certified birth certificate or other valid proof of age and if applicable, an original divorce decree or death certificate, as well as the $60 fee in cash. There is no waiting period; the license is valid for 30 days.

WHEN BROOKLYN-BASED JETSETTERS (THEY TRAVELED TO 16 COUNTRIES TOGETHER IN TWO YEARS) Melissa and Thomas McGoff got engaged in Egypt, the minute they landed at home they toured the yet-to-be unveiled TWA Hotel, a former terminal at JFK International Airport. Even in hardhats, the vintage aficionados knew the artful “blend of past and present would provide a memorable and unique experience,” says Melissa. And sure enough, their friends and family feted the couple with sake, an array of international food favorites and all donned ’60s-inspired clothing. “The staff of the nostalgic hotel were gracious and made our dream a reality.”

“From the Connie Airplane sitting on the tarmac, to the 1960s restored phone booths and the radiant Sunken Lounge, each provides a unique backdrop.”

Love takes flight.

Summer visits are notable for the seasonal outdoor installations created by big-name contemporary artists. A stroll along the revitalized boardwalk at Rockaway Beach promises a traditional beach-town day albeit with up-close views of planes coming in and out of JFK. It’s especially special at sunrise.

One of the couple’s favorite amenities of the throwback hotel is the rooftop pool. They staged much of their engagement photo shoot there and relaxed with wedding guests following their celebration. “It’s an infinity pool that overlooks the runway, where you have a front-row position watching the planes taking off and landing,” Melissa says.

“In place of fresh flowers, we had old maps fashioned into bouquets and boutonnieres sourced from a seller on Etsy.”

Melissa surprised Thomas with a groom’s cake fashioned to look like Shea Stadium, home of the New York Mets, one of the city’s professional baseball teams that’s based in Queens. Melissa provided a photo of the park to Buttercooky Bakery, one of the hotel’s preferred vendors, and was wowed by the results, which also included confections fashioned into a Mets helmet, baseball and bat.

Now a cocktail lounge, the vintage plane, complete with a restored interior, served as the couple’s ceremony site.

travel notes

At New York City’s JFK international airport in 1962, Trans World Airways AKA TWA, owned by American business magnate Howard Hughes, debuted its soaring modernist terminal designed by one of the era’s most celebrated architects, Eero Saarinen. Inside, with furnishings by the equally renowned Ray and Charles Eames and Florence Knoll, the photogenic masterpiece celebrated the glamour of air travel in that generation. After being decommissioned in 2001, the space was reimagined as a 512-room hotel debuting in May 2019. And the result is an homage to the golden age of travel while smashing the concept of ‘airport hotel.’ At the centerpoint of the exquisite building is the Sunken Lounge, a bar area with upholstered benches, Tulip chairs and tables and an antique departure board all set against soaring windows looking onto a vintage aircraft. More throwback touches include a heavy-on-the Rat Pack soundtrack, old-school photo booths, and an assortment of terminal-era cars throughout. There is also an outdoor ski chalet-esque bar with red Malm fireplace and historic TWA destination posters in guest rooms, elevators and other public spaces. Also on display is a fashion museum of TWA flight PHOTOGRAPHERS: Gil Pizzaro and Brian Alevis, attendants’ uniforms throughout Fade to Black New York the decades, a replica of Howard CENTERPIECES AND DECOR: Hughes’ office, and a look at Special Touches Saarinen’s design plans. A LONG WEEKEND GATHERING BROUGHT FAMILY AND FRIENDS TOGETER FOR A ROBUST ITINERARY BURSTING WITH ACTIVITIES, CELEBRATORY MEALS AND A SPECTACULAR SETTING TO SAY “I DO.”

The cake had three tiers of flavors—tres leches vanilla, traditional carrot cake and vanilla bean chiffon.

The planning team set up a gorgeous tent for the reception.

LOS ANGELES COUPLE JENNA NÉE BYRON AND JOSH AMSTER KNEW THEY wanted a wedding weekend that was inclusive, active and filled with fantastic food in a photogenic setting. Originally from the East Coast, the bride also knew at least half of their guest list would be traveling to toast to their union. Jenna and Josh selected Salamander Resort and Spa in Virginia for its superlative food and wine program, awesome activity menu and accessibility to Dulles International Airport. “Salamander is stunning; it’s the ultimate definition of Zen,” says Jenna. It’s a place where people can truly relax and enjoy the amenities, she adds, noting that their guests remained on-property, celebrating for the entire sun-kissed September weekend.

The ceremony was hosted on the Great Lawn.

“The Salamander has two pools with different energies at each. The resort pool is where we held our Friday wedding pool party with all of our guests. The spa pool, tucked in the corner of the property, is just heavenly.”

camptown

Sure, Salamander is superlative in its beauty and cinematic in its scenery, but what really sold the couple on hosting their friends and family here is the dizzying array of activities on the property’s 340 acres. There are art classes, biking, hiking, yoga and meditation, a spectacular spa, a comprehensive—and award-winning—equestrian center, and golf privileges. “We wanted the wedding to be a true weekend destination with several activities and events planned throughout,” explains Jenna. The groomsman played golf and the bridesmaids took a dance class. All guests enjoyed a pool party with a buffet, beer and bespoke cocktails. Then there was the dueling pianos performance, rehearsal in the light-flooded library and farewell brunch hosted in the main lobby.➺

Perfectly presented.

Oh what a night!

All vendors were local.

REAL DESTINATION WEDDING IN THE BAG Welcome boxes were put together to showcase the bounty of the region. Goodies included Virginia peanuts, popcorn, local Route 11 chips and Jenna and John’s favorite La Croix flavor. Custom weekend itineraries and bespoke cookies rounded out the selections crafted by Marigold & Grey, an artisan gifting company located just outside of Washington D.C.

Jenna and Josh visited the property twice before their main event.

town of Middleburg, which itself is on the National Register of Historic Places, is just one bucolic gem in picturesque Loudoun County, a locale dotted with photogenic stone buildings set on pastoral landscapes punctuated by horse farms and wineries. Boxwood Estate Winery sits on 26.5 rolling acres, producing varietals based on French traditions including merlot, cabernet franc and its most celebrated—sauvignon blanc. Neighboring Greenhill Vineyards is considered the region’s most renowned with its selection of 100% Virginia wines. The on-site farm store also sells honey from the property’s apiaries.

All together now.

A lock of love.

we are family

Jenna’s something old was a gold wedding band that once belonged to her great grandmother. “The ring I wore for the ceremony is one that all of the brides in my mother’s family wore at their weddings,” she explains.

The state of Virginia requires marriage licenses; blood tests, however, are not necessary. The couple must furnish, under oath, proof of age (driver’s license or passport), and if applicable, a divorce decree or death certificate. Fees vary, yet none may exceed $50. There is no waiting period; a marriage license is valid for 60 days.

“The entrance road into the hotel once you make the turn out of town is simply magical. And it’s all smiles from that point on.”

sun-kissed

The couple bookended their wedding weekend with a quiet moment at one of the property’s most scenic spots—the Middleburg Terrace, a stone expanse overlooking the epic grounds. The perch affords unbeatable vistas of the photogenic grand lawn, the equestrian center and culinary garden. “It is a very special place, there is often a guitarist or other musical entertainment, and you can look out and see the vast and beautiful property,” says Jenna, who particularly enjoyed sipping local wine while watching the sunset here.

Much of the produce and herbs are sourced from the culinary garden, which also serves as a spot for private alfresco dining.
