Reasons to Shop at Your Local Bridal Salon
The YES Moment
You,ve probably been dreaming of this day for a long time—with good reason! There is no greater feeling than trying on a wedding gown and seeing yourself as a bride for the very first time. Surrounded by friends and loved ones makes the YES moment that much sweeter! Selection
Make the Dress Your Own
Bridal salons offer the largest selection of reputable designers, styles, and colors.Your consultant will work directly with the designer to ensure everything from the color, to the fabric and the fit, are exactly what you envision.
The dress you try on in the store is just a starting point. Want to add a sleeve? Lower the back? Elongate the train? At a traditional bridal salon, you can work with a seamstress to customize your gown and turn your dream into a reality.
Feel-Good Factor
Special Pricing
When you buy from a trusted, local bridal salon, you not only support your community, but also small businesses mostly owned by women!
No Surprises You get what you pay for. A designer dress may be pricier than similar versions online, but counterfeit gowns can be poorly constructed, ill-fitting, and made out of cheap fabrics, if you receive your gown at all.
If budget is a concern, there are many ways to shop smart at a local salon. Many brick-and-mortar stores offer discounts at designer trunk shows, and host sample sales annually.
So Much More Than Just the Gown Your trained consultant will take precise measurements, assist with alterations, and put you at ease throughout the entire process. The salon will even steam your gown and store it safely until your wedding day!
For more wedding day fashion shopping tips, visit bridalguide.com/perfectdress.

A
& Q
Wedding
RSVP PLEASE
Q
Our response cards are due in less than a week and about 25 guests have not yet sent in their RSVPs. Our caterer needs a head count. Should we email a reminder or just call people directly?
A
Why not both? Reach out to all 25 guests via email immediately. Next, follow up with a phone call. You can ask your fiancé, both sets of parents (especially if any of the non-respondents are their friends and relatives) and your attendants to pitch in as well. A phone call conveys a sense of urgency that’s hard to ignore, so you’ll probably get a quicker response. It’s likely many of these invitees do intend to come—either they had all good intentions of sending in their RSVPs but let it slide or perhaps their response cards are already in the mail. No matter the reason, you’ll be relieved to get a head count for your caterer. AT-HOME WEDDING TIPS
Q
My fiancé and I would like to have a tented wedding at my parents’ home. They have a huge backyard and we think it will be more cost-effective. What do we need to consider?
A
There are quite a few things to take into consideration. While an at-home wedding can be lovely and unique, there are a number of details that may not prove as cost-effective as you’d like. Rental fees are required for the tent, tables, chairs, linens, silverware and glassware, for example. You will also need to rent a refrigeration truck and a dance floor. Depending on the weather, you might need heating lamps, fans or an air-conditioning unit. There should be adequate re-
strooms available for guests so you may be required to rent portable facilities. You’ll also have to make sure there is enough space for guest parking and that the kitchen is large enough to accommodate the catering team. There should be enough electrical power available to handle kitchen needs, entertainment and lighting, so a generator may be necessary. Also, access to the home the week before the wedding is essential, as there will be numerous deliveries. And finally, you’ll need to get permission from your local township and acquire any necessary permits. That said, if you research all of these factors, and a wedding at your parents’ home still fits the budget, then by all means go for it and enjoy the festivities!
SIDE BY SIDE
Q
Can we have our ushers seat people evenly on both sides of the aisle so my fiancé’s side doesn’t look sparse?
A
Absolutely. There’s nothing wrong with making sure there’s an even number of guests on each side. Just alert your ushers and tell them to seat guests on both sides of the aisle in equal distribution. If questioned, they can let guests know that they are being seated on both sides per your request. WEDDINGS AWAY ADVICE
Q
We’re thinking of having a destination wedding now that people are traveling again. What are some key things to consider?
A
Start researching early. Check out properties online and determine what their
wedding packages include. Get references from couples who married at any of the spots you’re considering to learn about their experiences. If at all possible, make time to visit the location to meet with the on-site wedding planner and local vendors: You’ll be able to check out locations for your ceremony, cocktail party, reception and day-after brunch and inquire about any group activities on offer. You should, however, be prepared to let go of total control. Your on-site planner is an expert and can easily orchestrate all the details for you and keep you updated via email, FaceTime or Zoom. Once you’ve decided on the location, send out save-the-dates (at least six months in advance) and set up a wedding website where you can include a link to the resort, list any nearby attractions and keep guests informed of activities you may be planning. Your guests and the wedding party will be responsible for their own travel arrangements and accommodations, so see if you can get a group discount for lodgings. Finally, make sure you arrive at the wedding destination early, at least a couple of days ahead of your guests’ arrival. You’ll want to meet with your planner and officiant to fine-tune the details, put together the welcome bags and pamper yourselves with some relaxing spa treatments. ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. For a fresh-faced, wedded-bliss beauty look, layer warm tones from (1) Tarte Sweet Tarte Double Shot Eyeshadow Palette onto the eyelids. Next, layer on (2) Wander Beauty Upgraded Lashes Treatment Mascara for healthy lashes that will continue to look fuller after just two weeks of use. The formula has active

For extra definition, use (3) CoverGirl Exhibitionist Liquid Liner Pen along the upper lash line for a tear-proof, true-matte finish that won’t fade throughout the day. The duo had two celebrations, a micro-wedding in April 2020 and a larger celebration exactly a year later. >> BIG-DAY GOALS “I wanted to feel like my best self in my wedding dress,” Andrea says. “And I wanted to make sure
“ Breakfast: oatmeal with protein powder and peanut butter powder or an
my fiancé experienced a jaw-dropping moment when he saw me walk down the aisle. Maintaining my weight loss was key: I got to wear my wedding dress two years in a row without any additional alterations.”
WHY WW (formerly Weight Watchers) “I’d tried pretty much every diet known to man. WW seemed like a truly livable program. I made the decision to join and never looked back! During the pandemic, as I was closer to goal, I became very active in the virtual workshops and all the support they bring. This is a program I can see following for life.”
>> FITNESS “Before WW, I was not active at all and my diet was garbage. I ate heavy food almost every meal and had
mixed drinks almost every night. Now I work out 6-7 days a week because I love how it makes me feel. I’ve gained such an appreciation for what I can do with my body with my newfound strength!” >> THE WORKOUT PLAN “Since the pandemic, I’ve been working out at home in my basement. I started with a couple
of weights and have grown it into a solid basement gym with a fuller set of dumbbells, resistance bands, and a Peloton. I start with 45-60 minutes of lifting, followed by a Peloton ride. If it’s nice out, I’ll take a walk before work; if the weather is bad, I’ll do a longer bike ride.”
AFTER
egg scramble with veggies. Lunch is a veggies and protein combo like Buffalo chicken stuffed zucchini. Our go-to dinner is steak or chicken fajitas, which I turn it into a big salad.” >> SUPPORT SYSTEM
BEFORE
“My now-husband John has loved me in all sizes, but en-
couraged and supported me in my weight-loss journey. He eats what I eat (though he does have a candy stash, lol), goes on walks with me and the dog, and knows that mornings are when I get my workout in and take some me time. >> STAYING ON TRACK “I had set my mind on putting in the work to lose the weight, and I kept at it. There are days that
I don’t have the same motivation, but I try to focus on the next goal. Sometimes we get caught up in the little issues that we face and forget to focus on the events down the road. Focusing on the next goal has helped motivate me and keep me moving forward. Nowadays, I focus on my strength and sustaining those long-term healthy habits that will keep me healthy for years to come.”
WHAT WORKS “Nothing is off limits in WW so I don’t feel that I have to restrict myself. The focus is on sustained weight loss and building healthy habits to foster success. The WW community—especially on Instagram—is extremely supportive. Our members love to lift each other up and celebrate our success on our journeys.”
BIGGEST CHALLENGES “When Covid hit we had to play every bit of our wedding by ear. It was a learning curve for all brides. We worked with our vendors to move our date, and cooked dinner for our microreception at home the first time around. It was very low-key and special. The‘repeat’ wedding a year later was even more special since we were finally able to be with so many friends and family members.”
>> #GOALS “Before WW, I was between a size 16 and 18 or XL and XXL. Now I wear between a size 6 and 8 or a size S/M. The wedding-dress process was
foreign to me! When we started the dress shopping process, I had lost almost 60 pounds and was shocked to find that I actually fit into a good number of dresses at the salon. Shopping pushed me out of my comfort zone, and I ended up picking something that I never expected I’d wear. I purchased a size I hoped would fit and started monthly fittings four months before the wedding. I was pleasantly surprised to find I needed to take the dress in quite a bit for it be wedding ready!”

Take inspiration from these creative forces as we continue to spotlight the best in the business in our new series. by Carol Straley MICHELE KAUFMAN, director of programming + events, Brooklyn Grange Rooftop Farm
The high glamour of the city. The calm and charm of the country. Back to the garden delights. Authenticity. Inclusivity. Eco-responsibility. As a premier farm and events space dedicated to sustainable living and local ecology, Brooklyn Grange Rooftop Farm checks all the boxes for couples looking for a unique farm-to-table experience taken to new heights. Already world-renowned as a leader in rooftop farming, Brooklyn Grange has been hosting what Michele Kaufman describes as “dreamy weddings amongst towering sunflowers and sweeping skyline views” since 2012. Here, Michele takes us down the garden path to show us how weddings bloom at Brooklyn Grange, and gives us the dirt on their freshest (and largest) venue, Brooklyn Grange Sunset Park, which opened in 2019.
Why we love weddings
“Weddings are a way for couples to make a commitment to how they want to lead their lives together, with friends and family as witnesses. We’re so honored when couples choose Brooklyn Grange as the canvas on which to express their identity as a family and we hope that getting married at the farm inspires couples to honor nature in their lives together.” • “In spring 2021 we launched a new tradition: We invite our clients to visit the farm in early spring to plant flowers! Couples write their names on garden stakes to mark the sprouts, and when their wedding day arrives, they can enjoy

Expect the unexpected
• “People hear ‘farm’ and expect bales of hay. You won’t find wagon wheels here, but you will be surrounded by nature, plants, everything people love about getting out of the city. Meanwhile, your out-oftown guests can still experience NYC to the fullest. • “We want the venue to feel complete and purposeful, but also leave room for those who do want to dress it up with florals and decor. The minmalist will be thrilled with the space as it is, and the maximalist will find a perfect canvas on which to layer all the textures, colors and decorations they can fit into our freight elevator!” Rooftop bounty.
Safety measures
A wedding with a view. Lights! Music! Vegetables!
• “As a farming business, good hygiene and healthy safety protocols have always been part of our culture. Plus, we’re lucky to be a venue that offers access to expansive private outdoor space—a rarity in the city! • “At our new indoor events venue in Sunset Park, we designed a wall of sliding glass doors to create a seamless transition to our wildflower-planted patio and the dazzling skyline view beyond. We also installed a clean air system that destroys pathogens without producing any harmful ozone—a win for our clients’ health and the health of the environment, too.”
Looking ahead
Signs of spring: flowering chive.
• “Our in-house beverage program draws inspiration from the farm’s harvest: All our beers are produced in the five boroughs. All of our wines are organic, biodynamic or natural. Our spirits were chosen with thought and care, and our cocktails feature seasonal elements of the farm, like basil or mint.
Happily ever after
“You might be sipping a spritz garnished with basil growing right next to the altar!”
• “Every couple leaves their imprint on the farm in some way, and becomes part of our community. We keep in touch with a lot of our couples after their wedding: They might become CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) members, or regulars at our ticketed dinner series. Lasting relationships are often formed, and we’re always excited to welcome couples back to this place that holds such special significance.” ➺

If I Could Plan it Again...
Brides are planners. They craft color schemes, decode guest lists, crunch numbers, and plot for weeks to pull off the ceremony and party of a lifetime. And almost universally they succeed. Still, no matter how many times a bride crossed her T’s and dotted her I’s, inevitably, there are details she wishes she’d handled differently: missed photo opportunities, vendor mix-ups, decorating delays. To help you avoid these snafus, recent brides have shared their big-day regrets. We then asked wedding pros to examine what went wrong so you don’t wind up repeating their mistakes.

WE ASKED BRIDES TO REVISIT THEIR WEDDINGS AND TELL US WHAT THEY MIGHT HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY.
to the church. “Someone did finally suggest that I ask one of my bridesmaids to field the calls, but I wish I’d asked someone to do this sooner,” she says.
THE MOST REPEATED REGRET AMONG BRIDES? NOT HIRING A VIDEOGRAPHER TO CAPTURE KEY I’d lock in a venue before the other details—like my dress! MOMENTS. “You’d think in the city of New York finding a venue would be easy,” says Danielle Fernandez, “But we didn’t nail down the space until September and our wedding was in December. Meantime, I’d found my dress in June, and had moved ahead with many other details. I’m just lucky the dress I picked worked for a wedding in a modern space in a SoHo hotel.” THE TAKEAWAY While brides no longer have to follow strict dress rules (who says a sequined ballgown won’t work for a backyard affair?), finding and securing the right location should be a top priority, says Alison Laesser-Keck, creative director of Alison Bryan Destinations. Because the reception dominates most couples’ budgets, it’s smart to get started pronto. “There’s a domino effect to wedding planning decisions,” explains Laesser-Keck. “Each choice is tied to the next one—and if one decision is even the tiniest bit off, it can throw things out of kilter in a major way.”
THE TAKEAWAY Engvall says she encourages her brides to keep cell phones out of sight the entire day. For brides who haven’t opted for a wedding coordinator, she suggests giving a family member or member of the wedding party a list of all the vendors, with phone numbers and email addresses, as well as a timeline for the day. Inform all of your vendors whom you’ve designated as your point person for the day, she adds.
I’d get personal recommendations before hiring a vendor. Diann Giannosa took her time before making even one call to prospective vendors. “I read articles and web reviews, and really did my homework,” says the New Yorker who planned an intimate wedding in a lush SoHo courtyard. When it came time to choose a non-denominational minister to officiate, she found someone whose sample texts were impressive. “We met in person and really seemed to click,”
PHOTOGRAPHY: (CLOCKWISE FROM TOP) DAVID MORENO PHOTO; GIDEON PHOTOGRAPHY
I’d hire a videographer. Having endured too many viewings of hours-long wedding videos, Christine Fennessy didn’t once consider hiring a videographer to capture her lakeside nuptials. But a year later, she confesses, she’d love to be able to hit play and revisit the day she was married on the shores of Owasco Lake in Auburn, NY. “I never thought I would say that, but I know I would cry every time I watched it.” THE TAKEAWAY Christine’s not alone in this regard—it was the most repeated “regret” among brides we interviewed. Michelle Engvall, owner of Married With Michelle, a wedding planning boutique in Seattle, says having a videographer “is money well spent, and it doesn’t have to break the bank.” She suggests looking for a professional who offers a “highlights” video package. “These are typically 5 to 10 minutes long, and tell the story of the day from start to finish in a condensed version.” Expect to pay in the neighborhood of $1,500 for a short, edited video with sound.
I’d enlist someone to field my calls the entire day. On the morning of her August wedding in Annville, PA, Lauren Strafford-Shiner woke up excited and relaxed. That soon changed when her phone started to ring. “At first it was family members calling with good wishes,” she recalls. “But then some of the vendors started calling with minor questions or updates.” Lauren wasn’t fazed until her florist phoned to say she was having trouble getting into the church. “That one did get me flustered.” Then it was Lauren’s turn to pick up the phone—to find out why the limo hadn’t arrived to take her
she says. About two months before the wedding, however, the officiant bristled after receiving an email from Giannosa outlining a few details. “He called me in attack mode and I knew I couldn’t have him marry us.” She scrambled and found a replacement, but wishes she’d had personal recommendations from friends. THE TAKEAWAY “Definitely check references,” says Engvall, “but it’s nice to also seek referrals from your friends, your planner or other vendors so you have some firsthand accounts of their reputation ➺
I’d be more assertive.
The country club that Emily Dean chose for her reception was perfect. Even better, the club had an on-site event planner. “The planner was one reason we booked that venue,” says Dean, who lives in Philadelphia. “But she quit her job two months before our wedding.” A new planner came on board, but she was “totally overwhelmed,” as the club had started a big construction project. Dean found herself stepping in to press the management to clean up areas she’d been promised for the reception. “I still get peeved when I see the machines and mess in the background of our photos,” she says.
THE TAKEAWAY On-site planners do shoulder a lot of the reception details, streamlining the process for many couples, but keep in mind that you’re signing a contract with the venue and not the planner, says Engvall. To give you more peace of mind, make sure you’re meeting with the person who’ll be on duty the day of your reception, pose a few “what-if” scenarios (including any future on-site renovations) and make sure you’re comfortable with their answers. And definitely read the fine print in all of your contracts before signing.
I’d DIY in advance. Having worked in the catering business, Sarah Kilpatrick had a firm grasp of what’s needed to pull off a smooth reception for 350 guests. She carried this organizational style over to other aspects of her wedding, which took place in Wheeling, WV, working closely with several vendors. Two things she did decide to DIY though, were creating the ceremony programs and crafting ribbon wands. “The final week before our wedding was pretty stress free, thanks to my many check-off lists,” says Kilpatrick. “But knowing that I had to get so many wands made and also put together the programs is something I wish I’d gotten out of the way sooner.” THE TAKEAWAY DIY-ing favors or other decor elements can help save money, says Laesser-Keck. But adjust your timeline so that everything’s ready to go a couple of weeks in advance. “And definitely enlist the help of close friends and family members. Handmade touches are wonderful, but be realistic about what you can pull off,” she says. “You want those days leading up to your wedding to be easy.”
I’d give the photographer more direction. A pale pucker isn’t the only thing Chenot Pennington would re-do. She also wishes she’d prepared a shot list for her photographer. “I absolutely loved my photographer, but so many pictures from the ceremony were taken from a balcony when I was hoping for more close-up shots,” THE TAKEAWAY “A photographer doesn’t know what a bride wants unless the bride tells her,” says wedding photographer Laura Yang. That’s where a detailed shot list comes in. Keep in mind that lighting and setting also play a role. “If a bride loves the sun-splashed, airy images she saw on her photographer’s site she can’t plan her own wedding inside a dark hotel ballroom and expect her photographer to produce the same look,” Yang says.
I’d start my honeymoon two days later. Kilpatrick and her new husband hired a limo to take them from the reception at 3 a.m. for an early morning flight to Jamaica. “Big mistake. It felt like we missed an entire day because we were so exhausted.” THE TAKEAWAY Engvall says it’s worth delaying your travels for a day or two. “Most couples appreciate not having to think about packing for a big vacation while they’re also worrying about everything that needs to get done for the wedding.”
A FINAL THOUGHT
I’d reapply my lipstick. “It’s a little thing that still drives me crazy: I never reapplied lipstick after the ceremony!” says Madeleine Chenot Pennington, who hosted a vintage-Hollywood bash in Waco, TX. “Now, when I look back at pictures, my un-glossed lips are all I see.”
“There’s always going to be one thing that’s not completely perfect,” says Alison Bryan’s Laesser-Keck. “But that doesn’t mean that the decision you made was bad. So rather than get stuck on that one thing, just let it go and remember how amazing the day was. You’ll look back and you won’t have any regrets.”

and service.” It’s also a good idea to ask everyone their preferred method of communication.
DIY FAVORS CAN HELP YOU SAVE MONEY. JUST MAKE SURE EVERYTHING’S READY TO GO A COUPLE OF WEEKS BEFORE THE BIG DAY.
THE TAKEAWAY Bare lips, shiny foreheads, smeared mascara—makeup mishaps are all too common, says Laesser-Keck. “The day is just going to fly by and it’s natural for brides to forget about this detail.” She suggests handing your maid of honor a small pouch that contains your lipstick and some blotting papers, a stain removing wipe, and a dryer sheet to handle static. “Ask her to remind you after the ceremony and once during the reception to do a quick retouch.”

It is difficult to comprehend the labor that goes into lighting or the time that goes into a perfectly fitted bridal gown. It’s critical to educate yourself on costs so that you aren’t taken by surprise and can budget properly. A wedding—although a oneday event—still requires a ton of behind-the-scenes work from professionals—and the costs will reflect that.

Work together on those things first, compromising as needed, and then continue on to other planning aspects.

VENUES & CONTRACTS “You must be aware of the financial pros and cons of each venue if you don’t want to be hit with unexpected expenses,” says Cheryl Beitler, who heads up The Zanadu Group, event planners in Hollywood, FL. “If you want a wedding outdoors, for example, you’ll need to obtain a number of pricey permits for your open-air event, and you’ll have to make sure that everything from city regulations to fire regulations are strictly adhered to. You’ll also have to rent tents in case of rain or inclement weather.” Beitler adds that every rental item placed in the tent is also your responsibility, including electricity generators, air conditioning or heating, the sound system and tableware. As for indoor venues, JoAnn Gregoli, the owner of Elegant Occasions event planning in New York City, says, “Ask the vendor for the price per person, all inclusive, so that you know the fee for food and beverages, plus tax and service charges. When reviewing the contract, look out for the words ‘additional costs may be incurred’ and ‘plus the cost of setup and delivery.’ ” Ask what these costs are: They can increase the price per person by 30 percent, adds Beitler, de-
pending on your state’s sales tax. Certain venue prices depend heavily on what time of year and where in the country you decide to get married. “If a majority of weddings take place between May and December where you live, you could save money across the board by getting married in a quieter month,” says Beitler. “The same applies to the day of the week or the time of day you choose. Reception halls charge the highest fees for Saturday night weddings. You might want to consider a Sunday brunch or luncheon instead, or consider a Friday night celebration.”
DECOR & FLOWERS “Selecting out-of-season flowers (such as peonies in October) will increase the budget considerably, as the flowers will need to be imported,” says Lisa Gorjestani, founder of Details Event Planning in Los Angeles. “Choosing flowers that are in season, abundant and have popular colors plays a big role in minimizing cost.” Gorjestani recommends hydrangeas for spring because they are large, luxurious and full—and they fill up space more easily and cheaply than, say, tulips. “If you want the feeling of lush ➺

Gorjestani suggests adding costeffective votives and candles to your centerpiece. However, most event spaces require fire permits and have restrictions on candles. She notes that a good florist will take care of the permit and the fee. You can create depth on the tables and conjure up a romantic mood—without digging too deeply into your pockets—by adding light-reflecting mirrors. “The one item that is often overlooked that I feel plays an absolute integral part is lighting. It is a key element in the overall look of your wedding,” says Gorjestani.
Although many venues offer wedding packages that include the price of the cake, Beitler warns that they tend to charge an extra cake-cutting fee if you bring in a cake from an outside bakery, so ask exactly how much this fee will add to your bill. If you do bring in an outside cake, be aware that “the price is based on decoration,” says Lauri Ditunno, a cake designer based in New York City. “The more labor-intensive the design is, the higher the price.”

Best of all, the farm hosts events with the same eco-minded approach they take to agriculture, so your wedding will have maximal impact on your guests–and minimal impact on your carbon footprint; visit brooklyngrangefarm. com/weddings. And read more about the venue in “Planners (+ Places) We Love,” in this issue. BY KAYLA HAYES PHOTOGRAPHY TERRY DOYLE LOCATION BROOKLYN GRANGE SUNSET PARK

hen the pandemic put an end to this couple’s plans for a wedding in Tulum, “ We had no choice but to reschedule,” says Rachel. As the senior sales manager for hospitality group Patrick Properties, she was able to make a seamless transition to one of the company’s star waterside venues. The thinking: “An elevated, fun outdoor dinner party” that would take advantage of locale’s stellar sunsets. “It was the beginning of October,” Rachel says, “the weather was perfect so we were able to have everything outside. Dinner was planned for the golden hour, amid candles and café lights. “A memorable, magical day,” say the couple.

• “Keep it simple,” she continues. “The focus of the day is that you’re marrying your best friend. Don’t overthink your selections—have fun with your planning.”
2 1. “We were only 15 people, but we were so thankful we were all able to celebrate together safely,” Rachel says. 2. Together with planner Abby Frye of PPHG Peninsula Events, the couple plotted a timeline that had everyone sitting down to dinner at sunset. 3. Says Rachel : “We selected brass and copper candle holders, candles that echoed the floral colors, autumnal-colored linens and amber water goblets.”

ALASKA
TALK ABOUT COOL—THIS PHILADELPHIA COUPLE RETURNED TO THE GLITTERING PLACE THEY MET TO SWAP VOWS IN A SPECTACULAR SPOT.
ALEXANDRA MUELLER AND WILLIAM COBB had their wedding planned. They were set to get married in front of 120 guests at the Gramercy Park Hotel in Manhattan. Then—well— you know where the story is headed—the couple was forced to cancel. When they did, they decided to revisit the place they fell in love— Alaska. “We met on a cruise with our families,” they explain, “so it was a natural fit for us to have our planned elopement.” They knew they discovered the perfect destination in Sheldon Chalet, a luxurious adventure hideaway in Denali National Park. There’s no Wi-Fi (Will, a private equity consultant, works a lot) to totally disconnect, and Alexandra, an occupational therapist, is a fan of hiking and national parks. Of their five-day weddingmoon the couple gushes, “it’s a once in a lifetime experience, although we are going back for our fifth anniversary.” 000

Wild On
Epic and awesome may not be enough to fully describe the impressive landscape of Denali National Park and Preserve. For starters, the vast wilderness stretches over six million acres—yes, million—with a single service road. Fun fact: That space is larger than the entire state of New Jersey, the couple’s hometown. Within the endless expanse of black and white spruce trees, paper birch, balsam and quaking aspen, mountaineers and backcountry adventurers can come face-to-face with wolves, moose and caribou. There’s also a large grizzly bear population. Perhaps one of the top five well-known names in the NPS system, the park is home to the country’s largest mountain—the eponymous peak rises to 20,310 feet.

Once Will and Alexandra decided to skip a large-scale celebration, they wanted a personalized and private escape to mark their union. One of the included and extra special touches at Sheldon A dreamy reception table. Chalet is the fact that it is only accessible via private helicopter. The 45-minute transfer concludes with a warm welcome complete with a favorite cocktail, which for Alexandra and Will, is an espresso martini. “Tom, the sommelier, prepared a variety of espresso martinis so we could choose our preferred taste,” explains Will, who says they enjoyed the treat each day of their weddingmoon. ➺
Hot Tip: “Go snowshoeing, sledding and skiing in the middle of Denali National Park, and enjoy a hot sauna afterward.”
Happily married and ready for their celebratory meal.

CASTLE IN THE CLOUDS Of all their amazing adventures, one of the more memorable moments of Alexandra and Will’s weddingmoon retreat was the bespoke igloo experience. Two of the property’s guides built the structure the day after the couple’s wedding. Once inside, they toasted to each other with a bottle of
champagne. Pia Muller, of Pia Creations and the bride’s mom, designed “un-vitations.” Will and Alexandra loved their Wi-Fi-free days.
Private plane and helicopter rides make for the ultimate honeymoon.
The couple loved “sitting around, reading and having zero connection with the outside world.” Will also favored sipping scotch fireside on the helicopter pad.

Marriage licenses are required in the state of Alaska. Couples must appear in person in either the Anchorage or Juneau Vital Statistics Offices or an Alaskan court with a valid ID for proof of age, the completed application and, if necessary, a divorce decree if the previous union ended within 60 days and a fee of $60. There is a three-day waiting period;
licenses are valid for 90 days.
One of the romantic allures of Sheldon Chalet is its absolute remoteness. That coupled with its direct access to awesome outdoor adventures is part of its origin story. Positioned on a rocky outcropping that also happens to be a microclimate, the property was first spotted by Don Sheldon via plane. The aerial adventurer was an area bush pilot for years and that legacy remains. All guests are transferred via helicopter; many of the resort’s activities are book-ended with plane rides.

The reception is set.
WHEN ATLANTA COUPLE Bailli Morrison and Ryan Meriman were looking for a place to wed, they wanted something warm, welcoming and turn-key. They also desired a beach location that offered a distinct sense of place with elevated cuisine. They found that at Grand Velas Riviera Maya, a sun-soaked, photogenic property on the Yucatan Peninsula, a fantastical jungleladen area that’s punctuated with ancient Mayan ruins, and is bordered by the glittering shores of Mexico’s Caribbean Sea. Bonus: The resort also happens to be an all-inclusive experience. The gorgeous beach location, the ability to incorporate only-inMexico touches to the wedding, and the exquisite food program sold us on the property, say the couple, who visited the resort twice before their big day.
The ceremony area fronted the sea.
Spiritual Union Bailli and Ryan celebrated their union with a Mayan wedding ceremony. The spiritual ritual is led by a local shaman who presents the bride and groom to the four elements— earth, water, fire and air. The ceremony begins with the gentle playing of music, the burning of copal (incense made from a local tree resin), and the blowing of a conch shell, which asks permission, attention and blessings from the cardinal points. There’s an exchange of white and yellow flowers, the sharing of a sacred beverage, as well as the tying of hands with a red string. Each moment symbolizes an element, and commitment to each other, as well as the natural and spiritual realms.

The couple experienced a variety of pictureperfect locations across Grand Velas Riviera Maya throughout their wedding celebration. They hosted a welcome party at Zen Pool, a shaded—and serene—spot that’s ringed with towering palms and vibrant tropical flowers. Following the ceremony on the beach-adjacent lawn, Bailli and Ryan danced and toasted with family at Terraza Mar, an indoor/outdoor reception area studded with flowers. The festivities concluded with a brunch at Azul, an open-air palapa-roofed eatery overlooking the gorgeous property fronted by golden sands.

The Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula that stretches from Cancun south to Puerto Morelos is called the Riviera Maya for its heritage as a spiritual capital and home for the ancient Maya people. Today, many Maya families still inhabit the jungle-dense region that’s been a part of the nation of Mexico since the early 1900s. The requirements for saying “I do” in Mexico are quite involved. All couples must be 18 or older and not currently married. You’ll need to present a valid passport, tourist card (issued upon arrival), birth certificate, blood test results (done in Mexico), completed marriage application forms from the local registry and four witnesses. All foreign documents, with the exception of your passport, will need to be translated, apostilled and notarized. The couple, and their witnesses, must arrive in Mexico four business days before the wedding day for legal ceremonies.
In all the world, only three countries have national cuisines that are solemnly protected by UNESCO. Mexico is one that lays claim to this gastronomic crown. The country is latticed with 18 food routes, each with a distinct flavor spanning Pre-Columbian to colonial histories and all the modern interpretations. Typical dishes of the Riviera Maya region include tamales, corn-dough-enclosed meat and/or cheeses cooked in a corn husk or banana leaf; panuchos yucatecos, refried tortillas stuffed with refried black beans and pulled chicken and topped with cabbage, tomato, avocado, pickled onion and pickled jalapeno. Traditionally cooked in a stone-lined pit, cochinita pibil, slow-roasted pork rubbed with achiote, is the marquee meal.
