My son just got engaged and his fiancé’s family (whom we’ve never met) lives across the country. What is the proper etiquette? Should Cooperstown, New York I call them?
A
Yes, you should definitely give them a call. Traditionally, the groom’s mom phones the bride’s parents to relay congratulations and extend an invitation to meet. Considering the distance between your two families you’ll probably need to plan a get-together at a later time. Either way, they will appreciate your call. COCKTAIL TIME

My fiancé and I are planning to invite about 60 guests to our 2022 wedding. Some of our guests will be from out of town. Is it OK to have a cocktail and dessert reception? Or should we provide St. Joseph, Missouri a full meal?
A
It’s perfectly fine to have a cocktailhour party reception: It’s fun, elegant and an affordable alternative to the traditional sit-down dinner. I wouldn’t worry about not having enough food to feed your guests. I’ve been to many weddings where the cocktail-hour fare was fantastic. It’s all about offering delicious, abundant food at stations as well as having passed hors d’oeuvres. Think pasta bar, or a Tuscan table filled with Italian breads along with an array of cheese and olives. Offer crowd-pleasing comfort foods like mac ‘n’ cheese, fries with a variety of toppings, sliders and mini grilled cheese sandwiches along with shot glasses of soup. If your budget allows, you can have a sushi station, carving station or seafood bar. Speak with your caterer about food options and be
sure to indicate on your invitation that the event is for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and dessert so your guests won’t be expecting a full-course, sit-down dinner. DOUBLE DUTY

I’m having a matron of honor and a maid of honor. Which one should be paired with the best man for the recessional and first dance?

For the recessional, the maid and matron of honor can walk down the aisle together or the best man can escort both women, one on each arm. There’s no hard and fast rule about the first dance—you can have the maid of honor dance with the best man while the matron of honor dances with a groomsman or vice versa. It’s up to you and your fiancé to decide what you’d like to do. THE EX FACTOR

Is it acceptable to invite my exwife and our little girl to my wedding? My fiancé has a good relationship with my ex but I’m not sure if this would be appropriate. Chicago, Illinois

As a rule, it’s recommended that ex-spouses not be invited to the wedding, even if you have an amicable relationship. Your little girl may be confused by her mother’s presence at your nuptials. Guests, too, might feel a bit uncomfortable and not know what to say to your ex (and now the focus would be on her instead of on you and your new wife.) Also, your exwife may find it emotionally difficult to witness your re-marriage, no matter how well she and your fiancé get along. If you still feel strongly about extending
an invitation to your ex, make sure your future wife is absolutely fine with it. If she indicates even the slightest bit of hesitation or doubt then just have your daughter attend the wedding. GIVE THANKS

It’s not necessary, but if you think that the service provided was exceptional then definitely send a handwritten note (your stationer will love it!). Like most of us, wedding vendors value recognition for a job well done and they will like having your thank-you note on hand as a testimonial for their future customers. You should also post a favorable review on each vendor’s website citing how much you enjoyed working with them, and what they did to make your day extra-special. Include their hashtags on your other social media posts as well and consider writing a positive review on Yelp. Most vendors take great pride in their work and strive to give brides and groom an unforgettable day. Eyelash extensions are mink, silk or synthetic strands individually applied to the root of each real lash. Heather Elrod, CEO of Amazing Lash Studio explains, “Extensions enhance natural lashes, giving the illusion of a fuller lash line by lengthening and thickening. With proper application, lash extensions look and feel completely natural.” For best results, extensions should be applied one week prior to your wedding day (they will last four to six weeks).
If your aim is a subtly enhanced, long-lasting look, consider a lash lift. “Lifts curl the natural lashes from the base in an upward position, creating a semi-permanent curl and the appearance of longer, thicker lashes,” says Elrod. This procedure is an easy way to make eyes pop without the maintenance of mascara or falsies. Like extensions, lifts should be done at least one week before heading down the aisle and last about a month.
Usually applied after a lash lift, a tint “consists of using a special dye, giving you darker lashes without mascara,” says Elrod. While a bride can go in for a lift one week before her wedding, a tint should be applied 48 hours before, as it lasts between one to two weeks on average. Additionally, for extensions, lifts and tints, aftercare is important. “Avoid water, moisture or sweat for the first 24 hours,” states Elrod. “Then cleanse lashes at least twice a week, using oil-free products.”

Even ballet flats can give you a nasty blister if they’re not broken in. Try doing a few chores around the house in your wedding footwear (when your fiancé isn’t home) to ensure you’ll be able to dance the night away. • DO choose a hair and makeup style that is similar to your everyday look, with an added touch of upgraded glamour. Your fiancé is going to want to see you walking down the aisle, and you’ll be much happier looking back on your pictures in a few years. • DO be upfront with all of your vendors about what you do and don’t want at your wedding. For example, provide a “don’t play” list to your DJ or band and a “must take” list for your photographer so everything is exactly as you envisioned it. • DO remember to send thank-you notes to those who made your special day perfect, but may not have been a guest at your wedding. Loved your officiant? Developed a great relationship with the coordinator at your venue? Let them know. Your kind words will be appreciated.

Ask yourselves the most important question of all: What feeling do I want my guests to have throughout the celebration? What emotions do I want them to take away? There are so many “I Dos” and “I Don’ts” along the way that keeping them straight can be almost as overwhelming as the planning process itself. Here are a few tips that I think are among the most important to keep in mind.

BE FLEXIBLE AND CREATIVE
You may find that some of your first choices aren’t available. For example, many popular wedding locations are reserved a year in advance. So learn to be flexible; a fabulous venue could be a place you haven’t yet imagined. “Instead of the more obvious choices, perhaps a friend has a beautiful beach house, or you could get married in a local park,” says Paul. Open your mind to different dates and times as well. Sometimes it’s much easier to find and secure a place for a Friday or Sunday—or earlier in the day. The better able you are to come up with creative alternatives, the happier you’ll be with the end result.
ASK FOR HELP Event planners may be hired to do the entire wedding, or simply to handle a few tasks you can’t fit in or even just to manage things on the big day itself. Researching vendors to learn who’s right for the job is time consuming, and a good wedding planner with a network of reliable vendors can figure out the celebratory logistics quickly and easily.

lthough many brides and grooms take up to a year and a half to organize their weddings, other couples want to make it snappy. “I’m getting more and more calls from brides who would like to get married in a couple of months,” says event planner Julie Pryor of Pryor Events in Los Angeles. There are plenty of reasons for having a wedding in a hurry—from a job change or military deployment to just plain eagerness to tie the knot. Here, some pros’ tips to ensure that, even with fast-and-furious planning, your wedding goes off without a hitch.
MAKE THE FIRST MONTH COUNT Wedding timelines usually start a year before the big day. So what’s a bride to do when she’s just six months out (or less)? “First, set your budget and make all your major decisions and purchases,” recommends Christine Paul of Christine Paul Events in New York City. “That means booking your ceremony and reception sites, purchasing or ordering your gown and the bridesmaids’ dresses, hiring a photographer and deciding on the honeymoon.” You’ll also want to sit down with your fiancé and set your priorities. For example,
But will it cost more? In many cases, you’ll receive the same treatment—and fees—as any other bride. In other words, giving shorter notice to vendors and other service providers doesn’t mean you’ll be getting a higher fee. And, says Debi Lilly of A Perfect Event in Chicago, “don’t assume you should refrain from negotiating prices just because you’re on a short timetable. Negotiate whenever and wherever it seems reasonable.” Although there shouldn’t be rush fees for booking your venue, your band, your florist or most other vendors, Lilly notes, “You can expect to pay extra for hurrying your and your bridesmaids’ gowns and maybe the invitations or favors.” So try to make quick, smart decisions. You really don’t have time to be fickle about the colors of your bridesmaids’ dresses or about whether to have roses or white orchids for your bouquet. Chances are, you won’t regret your choices—especially when you find you’ve eliminated costly “rush” fees.

• Micro, minimony, elopement. “We’ve seen a huge spike in couples who were planning a large traditional wedding and are now planning something smaller,” says McKenzi Taylor, owner, Cactus Collective Weddings, which has long specialized in intimate outdoor weddings in Las Vegas and the surrounding area. “We are seeing a lot of ‘just us’ elopements or micro-weddings with a handful of guests. A lot of our couples have told me, ‘This is what I always wanted anyway.’ ” • “Couples are making very thoughtful and intentional decisions—they want the fine details of a big wedding, but on a much smaller scale,” reports the team at Peninsula Events with Patrick Properties Hospitality Group, based in Charleston, SC. Of late, “The most popular option has been for a waterfront ceremony with the couple’s loved ones paired with a champagne toast and cake cutting or a beautiful al fresco brunch.” • “We see the smaller wedding trend sticking around,” says Cheryl Stair, chef and co-owner, Art of Eating Catering in Bridgehampton, NY. “There is something really special about an intimate celebration. We believe couples are beginning to realize the real reason for weddings in the first place—to focus on your love for one another and the lifetime commitment you are making to one another and each other’s families.”

• “The couples who are ready to get married feel more comfortable than ever before with short engagements,” says Neillie Butler, owner of Mariée Ami, based in Mountain Brook, AL. “They see how quickly the world can change, and their focus is more on starting their life together.” Adds Taylor, “Couples are tired of being in limbo and really want to get married.” • Others are waiting, Butler says. “We have a group of bigger weddings that were supposed to happen in 2020 that have been rescheduled for 2021, some as early as June. July 2021 is booked solid.” • Two-part celebrations have also taken hold. “We see many couples who had to put their 2020 weddings on hold, opting for an intimate celebration this year with hopes of going forward with their larger-scale plans next year,” says Stair. • “We see weddings much smaller and closer to home for many couples,” says Virginia Frischkorn, founder of Bluebird Productions in Colorado. “Starting in June 2021, we see the destination wedding’s return and larger (150+) headcounts.” • Looking further ahead, “For weddings taking place after June 2021, almost all our couples are envisioning guest counts of 100-150, but with backup plans in mind,” say Aleah and Nick Valley, founders of Valley & Co. venues (and safety measures) • Jove Meyer, is seeing more outdoor weddings and a rise in outdoor and mixed indoor/outdoor spaces. “Along with masks and hand sanitizer, we’ll be looking to automatic doors and sink faucets to keep guests and vendors as safe as possible,” Meyer says. “We’ll see more thoughtful floor plans with smaller table sizes based on family pods and who feels most comfortable with whom.” • “Guest lists are smaller and the venues are more intimate,” says Art of Eating’s Stair. “More couples are choosing to celebrate in spaces that they have personal connections to (such as their very own homes) or the little park where
they shared their first kiss—spaces that may not previously have been an option due to the size of their guest lists.” • “The saying ‘Love cannot be canceled’ is our new driving force during this pandemic,” says Emily Pinon, creative director of Ode & Bastille Events in New York City, NY. “As a result, weddings have become more intimate and romantic. Couples are choosing to have their weddings outdoors, at home, on rooftops or finding creative

including personal details that reflect their story as a couple. Some are serving drinks that are favorites of their siblings, or foods that would remind their families of their great-grandparents. Little details like that are definitely coming through in the planning process.” • “More thought is put into self-service options like creative drink walls,” Pinon says. “Food is also more playful, presented in chic bento boxes and to-go containers. There is no finger food, everything is eaten with a fork (and knife where needed). • “Smaller guest counts make the large wedding cake unnecessary, so couples are going for smaller cakes or mini tiers to cut for ceremonial purposes, then offering guests an array of other options,” says Bergmark. “Best practices are to not do dessert stations, but rather to plate a variety of mini desserts for each guest to enjoy at the table.” ¢ A sweet set-up mimics the traditional tiered wedding cake.

Diva bridesmaids, meddling moms, inappropriate in-laws. Here’s how to handle them all, with grace and ease. by Michele Bender
if you didn’t have to deal with friends and families. But it’s a time when everyone’s emotions can run high, explains Sheryl Paul, Boulder, CO-based bridal counselor and author of The Conscious Bride’s Wedding Planner. “Even though you’re the one getting married, it’s also a transition for them,” she says. Adds Jeri Kadison, a bridal coach and an expert in stress management in Teaneck, New Jersey. “Differences of opinion are a natural part of the planning process, and weddings can be stressful. But if you start with good, clear communication, you can keep everyone on the happiness track.” Here, some helpful tips.
The Problem ›› MEDDLING MOMS Mother-daughter relationships are complex enough. Add wedding planning to the mix and they get even more so. “A mother’s role in the wedding can touch on financial, emotional and cultural issues,” explains Bethann Schacht, bridal coach and director of Aurora Counseling Associates in Natick, MA. ›› FIGURE OUT THE FINANCIALS If your parents are paying for the wedding, they may do so with strings attached. “My mother wasn’t sold on the wedding planner so she fired her,” says Lily, 24. “It was frustrating, but she was paying so she had the final word.” You and your

fiancé should figure out your budget early on and discuss with both sets of parents who will pay for what and how much. If Mom and Dad are kicking in a large amount, ask them how involved they expect to be. If you find out they want a high level of control, you may want to think twice about the arrangements. ›› PICK YOUR BATTLES If you don’t care all that much about the flowers and tablecloths, give those jobs to your mom; if the dress and music are critical to you, take those tasks on as your own. When it comes to her desires versus yours, pick those that matter most to you and address them head on. Simply tell her, “I understand that you want me to wear your wedding dress, but finding my own is really important to me. However, I’d love to wear your earrings,” Kadison says. ›› GO BELOW THE SURFACE “When you’re able to recognize and address the issues underlying your mother’s behavior, the two of you can actually become closer through this process instead of more fractured and resentful,” says Paul. Think about what may be triggering your mother’s behavior; she may feel she’s losing her daughter, or she may be experiencing emotions that have to do with her own marriage. Perhaps she feels she has to plan your wedding because her mother planned hers. Have a heart-to-heart talk. Start by trying this: “Mom, I know this is a really emotional time for you, too. Can we talk about it?”
The Problem ›› INAPPROPRIATE IN-LAWS Everyone is familiar with that old saying, “A daughter is a daughter for life, a son is a son until he finds a wife.” The essence of this saying may be lurking behind your future mother-in-law’s outrageous behavior. “A wedding signifies that it’s time for a son to cut the apron strings and to make his future wife the number-one woman in his life,” says Paul. “A transfer of allegiance from mother to wife takes place and this may not be easy for his mom or his whole family.” ›› INCLUDE THE IN-LAWS Often, in-laws feel left out, pure and
GROOM SERVICE If your fiancé isn’t jumping for joy at the prospect of wedding planning, don’t take it personally. “Many men truly believe that wedding planning is a woman’s realm,” says Schacht.
Give him credit for his efforts. Has he gone the traditional route of choosing a ring on his own, asking your parents for your hand and planning how to pop the question? In that case, by the time you’re engaged, he has done a lot of work, and he may prefer the ball to be in your court.
Divide and conquer. “You may assume that your guy doesn’t want to be part of the process, so you do everything without him. Next thing you know, you resent that he isn’t involved,” says Schacht. Have him take charge of the details that matter to him.
Play as a team. “Often a couple starts out with an idea and then it snowballs. Now, the groom feels his day is nothing like what was discussed,” says Paul. Make sure you’re sticking with your plan. “In the end,” says Schacht, “the details don’t matter as much as the fact that you carried out your plan together.”
simple. This happened to Madeline, 29. “My in-laws were upset that we didn’t invite more of their friends. At the wedding, my mother-in-law acted displeased the whole time. It was mortifying! I think it was her way of getting even.” Though you don’t have to do everything they want, figure out how you can accommodate at least some of their wishes, so you start out on the right foot with your soon-to-be family. ›› BE CLEAR ABOUT THEIR ROLE Not too long ago, there were traditional divisions of wedding responsibilities. For example, the bride’s family paid for the wedding and the groom’s paid for the rehearsal dinner. “But times have changed and these things can’t be assumed anymore,” says Schacht. So sit down with
your in-laws and decide what they will be responsible for. Say something like, “We understand this process can be difficult. But we want everyone to be happy, so let’s agree upon what your roles are now.” “Just don’t ask your soon-to-be mother-inlaw to be your wedding planner. For me, that ended in disaster,” says Beth, 25. ›› LET YOUR FIANCÉ DO THE TALKING If there are issues with the in-laws, let your groom-to-be step in and show his family that the two of you are a team. “It’s part of his transition to manhood and a symbolic start to your life together,” says Paul.
The Problem ›› HIGH-MAINTENANCE BRIDESMAIDS “One of my bridesmaids showed up at my shower with a severe hangover,” says Sara, 30. “And on the wedding day she was late to the hair and makeup session.” When a bridesmaid behaves badly, there may be more going on than meets the eye. ›› ANALYZE YOURSELF FIRST Although you’re probably not making extreme demands, perhaps you’ve gotten a little carried away. “I loved the idea of my maids all having the same hairdo, so I suggested that one of them cut her bangs to match the others,” says Sue, 28. “Later I realized how ridiculous it was and why she seemed so miffed.” ›› PICK A POINT PERSON Choose a go-to gal to be in charge of the bridesmaids. “Have her—not you—be the one to lead the way,” Schacht says. “She’s a neutral party, so it may be easier for her to organize them to plan the shower, for example.” ›› HAVE SOME GIRL TALK “Your ’maid may say that she’s ‘busy,’ but busy may hide her jealousy of your wedding or even disapproval of the groom,” says Schacht. She also may fear your friendship is going to change once you’ve wed. “Be up front,” says Paul. “Try: ‘It seems to be hard for you to be a part of things. I’d like to talk about what’s going on.’ ” If she’s a true friend, she’ll be open to making changes. ¢

• “Instead of offering your guests their choice of three entrées—such as a beef, fish and chicken dish—create a duo plate like a surf-and-turf with fish and beef medallions to give guests a variety on the one plate,” says Laura Bianco, wedding planner at My Bellissima in Morristown, New Jersey. You’ll save as much as 40 percent, since you don’t have to buy enough of each choice to suit guests who wish to change their entrée orders. • Chicken, turkey, pork and pasta are the least expensive entrée options. • Talk with your caterer about dressing up those less costly chicken or pasta dishes with a delicious gourmet sauce, such as a balsamic glaze, a tropical mango salsa or a creamy five-cheese sauce to create a luxe, four-star dining feel at a much lower price per guest. • Christopher Confero, owner of Christopher Confero Design in Birmingham, Alabama, says, “Think local and think seasonal,” since locally acquired, in-season menu items always cost far less than imported foods. • Serve a vegetarian entrée as one inexpensive menu option. • Ask your caterer to create a gourmet presentation of side dishes, such as a dollop of pearled couscous with a zucchini “slaw” or asparagus topped with fontina cheese.
• Combine your appetizer and salad course, for example, by serving a few mini crabcakes with a mesclun salad. • Serve vendor meals. To the vendors, that is. Most banquet halls offer a vendor meal for $20 or so to keep those eight band members, photographer, videographer and wedding coordinator fed for less than your guest meal price. • “An open bar is a must, but just serve a variety of fine wines and beer with a signature cocktail or two,” says Bianco. “This way, guests who have to have a rum or vodka drink are happy, but you’re not paying an enormous price for a full, top-

You’ll save 25 percent to 30 percent off your budget.” • Leave shots off your bar menu and save a fortune. • Garnish your signature cocktail creatively with curled lemon peel, colorful sugar rimming or exotic fruit spears to make drinks look pricier than they really are. • Eliminate corkage fees. Ask your site manager to waive the price charged when bartenders open each bottle of wine. This $2 per bottle (or more) charge is often easily negotiated out of your contract. • Skip pricey liquor-infused after-dinner drinks like Irish coffee, and instead serve flavored coffee and cappuccino.
CAKE & DESSERTS • Choose a two-or-three-tier wedding cake that is iced with fluffy buttercream frosting and piped with colorful dots—instead of an expensive, labor-intensive fondant replica of the lace and beading on your wedding gown. • Display a faux cake made of frostingcovered Styrofoam tiers for visual effect, and then serve cake slices from a less inexpensive but equally guest-pleasing sheet cake that’s kept in the kitchen. • Skip the Viennese dessert table and serve your wedding cake with two or three luscious desserts, like chocolate-covered berries and Chantilly cream fruit tarts. • “I adore a late-night passed dessert tray, filled with delectible bite-sized treats you can pop in your mouth and savor,” says Confero. Bite-sized brownies, mini cupcakes or doughnuts, dark chocolate fudge squares and other inexpensive desserts perfectly fill the bill. • Performance desserts are so dated, which leaves you to feel free to skip the flaming bananas.
An elegant cocktail party may take place during the daytime or evening hours and is often a semi-formal event. • Mix stations with hand-serving so that guests enjoy the upscale service aspect. “Be sure the food is presented beautifully at stations or at a bar, with attendants presiding over each to keep everything neat,” advises event designer Michelle Rago, of Michelle Rago Destinations in New York City. • “Consider offering a wine and food pairing, like a wine and cheese station,” says Maya Kalman, wedding and event coordinator at Swank Productions in New York City. • Calamari and mussels often cost less than shrimp, lobster and crab. • Skip the raw bar—it’s one of the priciest stations for a cocktail party. • Guests love inexpensive hummus in flavors like roasted red pepper and pesto, offered with pita triangles. • Pasta is one of the least-costly

station options, but go with choices like pumpkin and goat cheese, spinach and brie, or lobster and goat cheese for a more impressive twist. • Another always popular yet inexpensive idea is a Thai station with lots of tasty noodles, colorful vegetables and spicy sauces. • Instead of pricey seafood sushi, create a guest-pleasing veggie sushi station with hand rolls made of brown rice and filled with avocado, pumpkin or sweet potato. • Especially in fall weather, a soup bar is a budget-friendly option that impresses and warms guests with shots of creamy lobster bisque, acorn squash soup, clam chowder, potato and leek, and other seasonal flavors. • A hot trend in budget-friendly stations is the risotto bar, offering creamy gourmet risotto with toppings. It’s a new spin on the old-fashioned mashed potato bar. • Make your inexpensive cocktail party menu items look more stylish by serving them on unique plates in cool shapes and colors. ➺

• “Have a vodka-tasting bar. Staff it with a vodka expert as a special offering that impresses guests. You’ll still save on the cost of a full, unlimited bar,” says Kalman. • Add fruity-fresh sangrias to your drinks menu for a trendy drink that stretches how much you get from each bottle of wine. • Plan a champagne-cocktail bar. Guests can select a half-champagne, half-fruit juice or nectar drink that triples each bottle’s serving capacity.
CAKES & DESSERTS • “I always love to create a dessert station of hot, freshly baked chocolate chip cookies,” says Rago. “They’re totally irresistible!” • “Have a server hand out little servings of really good ice cream,” Rago suggests. • Pick from your baker’s basics list— think crowd-pleasing standards like vanilla, lemon, red velvet—and skip the pricier cake and filling options, including liquor infusions and other exotic flavors • Another fee to try to negotiate out of your contract: the per-slice cutting and plating fees that some event sites charge. • A platter of fruits like mango and pineapple isn’t expensive and saves guests lots of calories.
Brunch
“I love brunch receptions,” says Michelle Rago. “They’re so cheerful, happy and uplifting.” Here are some clever budget-saving ideas for your daytime reception. • A local restaurant or hotel may make it simple for you by offering the perfect brunch with a wide array of menu options, at just $18 to $28 per person. If you like the options, go for the good price. • Provide just one seafood station, say, for smoked salmon. • Have a made-to-order station. Guests enjoy the chef’s attention as they watch him whip up a custom omelet, pancakes or crepes made to their taste. These are also great conversation-starters for guests as they give their orders and wait for their plates. • Give a classic a gourmet twist. “If your chef offers an eggs Benedict made with lobster or crab cakes, it feels like luxury,” says Kalman. “I also love a blini station topped with a touch of caviar.” • Some hotels and restaurants will give each guest a complimentary champagne or mimosa. “Champagne cocktails, mimosas or bellinis are elegant drinks for a brunch reception,” says Bianco. And remember that you’ll save lots on alcohol since most guests won’t be overindulging at this time of day. • “Offer the best Bloody Mary bar ever, with great add-ins, or have a server walk around with a Bloody Mary serving station on a cart,” suggests Rago. Guests will enjoy having their drinks whipped up while they watch. • Provide a budget-friendly coffee, tea or chai bar.
CAKES & DESSERTS • Choose a simple, pretty cake in a light flavor such as vanilla or lemon, which will be delicious and less expensive without the additional cost of decoration and multiple flavors. Skipping elaborate sugarpaste designs (these are better for a formal evening wedding) will keep the presentation clean and fresh. • “Brunch calls for light and airy desserts, such as parfaits, whipped mousse with fresh mango—nothing heavy like a chocolate lava cake,” says Kalman. • Cupcakes impress on a budget, as do mini pastries and fruit tartlets. Platters of eye-pleasing sweet treats are great crowd-pleasers. • Brunch is perfect for fresh and refreshing fruit platters, or pretty dessert cups filled with sweet mandarin oranges. Remember that a single type of fruit looks more sophisticated than a mixed fruit cup. ¢

ansom asked Brandice to be his wife while riding their horses along the trails of Oregon’s Smith Rock State Park—a love story made full circle as the high school sweethearts originally met at their local 4-H youth horse program as kids. It was only fitting that their nuptials take place in a hayfield at the bride’s childhood home in their shared hometown of Tumalo, Oregon. “The memories from growing up here made our wedding extra-special,” said Brandice. A sunny fall day with the couple’s family and friends—four-legged ones included—completed what the couple described as, “Nothing short of perfect.” —Anna Smutny and Kate Watson

OLD MET NEW, AND CLASSIC met modern when New York-based couple Amanda née Feldman Jay and Jeff Jay joined with family and friends in her hometown to swap vows at the Sagamore Pendry Baltimore. “I’m a history buff,” Amanda says. Looking for a venue that exuded beauty, elegance and, yes, history, she fell in love with the recently opened hotel that’s housed in a circa 1914 building on a Charm City pier known for having welcomed thousands of new immigrants to America’s shores in the mid 19th century. “Hosting our wedding here meant that more of our guests were able to celebrate with us,” she adds.

Amanda has a must-do list for the perfect day: Start in the Fell’s Point neighborhood, where the Sagamore Pendry Hotel is located. “Grab fresh pastries and coffee from Pitango Bakery + Cafe and walk along the cobblestone streets by the water,” she says. Next, hop a water taxi to explore the rest of the city by boat. She suggests lunch at Thames Street Oyster House and a cocktail at The Horse You Came In On Saloon, America’s oldest continuously operated lounge since 1775. “Conclude with dinner by renowned chef Andrew Carmellini at The Pendry’s Rec Pier Chop House,” she adds.

Positioned at the head of the Patapsco River, North of the Chesapeake Bay, Baltimore was established in 1729 and was named for the Irish barony. Its history is a tumult of immigration, shipping and industrial stories that were eclipsed by a deteriorating cityscape. Charm City has experienced a revival that’s heavy on small shops, regional cuisine and local lore. Some of Amanda’s favorite cultural sites include a trio of museums—Edgar Allen Poe’s former home; The American Visionary Art Museum, a collection of “outsider art;” and The National Great Blacks in Wax Museum, a showcase of important American Black figures.

bookended their Big Day here, with their first look and final exit happening at the photo-perfect place. “It feels so grand with soaring ceilings and big windows above it, and the color is simply striking,” Amanda adds.

required to wed in the state of Maryland. Couples must present in person proof of age, residency and social security numbers. Each party must also submit proof of single marital status. There is a two-day waiting period, and licenses are valid for six months. Witnesses and blood tests are not required.

planning a large destination wedding with 200 of our friends and family,” explain Alexie née Soffer Wells and Jordan Wells. Instead, the Chicago couple swapped vows in an intimate affair where they were the only attendees. “When the Coronavirus pandemic hit, we postponed the party.” To honor their wedding date and the destination of one of their first getaways as a couple, Colorado, Alexie and Jordan wed at the exclusive—and wildly photogenic—Dunton Hot Springs, a ghost mining town that’s now the embodiment of rustic luxury, the romantic great outdoors and social distancing. The property offers an elopement package, which made the difficult decision of getting hitched without being surrounded by loved ones a bit easier. “It’s a reminder that the most important thing about our marriage is us committing to spending our lives together,” says Alexie. ➺
REAL DESTINATION WEDDING “I DO” FOR TWO The elopement package at Dunton made it extremely easy to plan the wedding, says Alexie, who after a year of putting together a different event welcomed the no-guesswork model. “They offered everything we needed—the ceremony location, officiant, bridal bouquet andPicked groomand boutonniere, preserved wedding fixin’s. cake for two and champagne with branded flutes,” she explains. The resort also included a photography session for the Big Day.

The resort, which is set across the valley from the famous ski town of Telluride, is rich with a unique history. It’s one the couple didn’t know before booking, but soon came to appreciate when they were holed up at the romantic mountain retreat. “Dunton is an old ghost town,” they share. The expanse was also a mining camp first settled in the mid 1880s. Some say the property’s natural thermal waters were the reason for the area’s inhabitation. Today, some of the cabin accommodations have natural pools; all guests have access to the thermal waters via an extremely Instagrammable bathhouse. The equally photo-ready accommodations are a combination of refurbished and individually appointed historic cabins and a handful of luxury tents.
Here’s what the couple packed for their getaway: “Hiking boots to explore the area, swimsuits for endless hours in the hot springs, and layers of casual clothes. We love the relaxed nature of the resort.” Just married.

Great Adventure The only thing that rivals the natural scenery and impeccable service here is the activity menu. Outdoor adventures include horseback riding (something the couple signed up for), fly fishing, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking. Alexie and Jordan went for a hike in the morning before their ceremony. “There are fabulous trails right on the property,” says Alexie. And it is so private, they encountered no other guests on their cinematic foray into the forest. “It was a great way to start the morning on our wedding day,” she adds.
PRIX FIXE A stay at Dunton Hot Springs includes all meals, traditionally served family-style in the main dining room. To keep with social-distancing measures, the property also offers meals outdoors and in-cabin/tent. No matter where they’re savored, dinners are lingering affairs featuring three courses and exquisite wine pairings. Evenings also welcome bespoke cocktail hours and hors d’oeuvres. After the ceremony, the couple toasted their union with champagne, and shared their dinner and wedding cake in a special setting— one of the property’s teepees.

“Our ceremony took place at a small outdoor chapel on the edge of the property,” says Alexie. Positioned in front of the wooded landscape and steps from a waterfall, the setting is a serene spot to swap vows. Since there were no guests, Alexie and Jordan were able to focus on themselves and the vows they had written for each other. After the pretty ceremony—”it was short and sweet”— Alexie kicked off her heels and they posed for photos near the waterfall.
“The most romantic spot on property is the restored 19th-century bathhouse with a hot spring pool inside. There’s another one right outside the building with a view of the mountains. It was our favorite place to sit and see the most unbelievable stars.” The main dining area.
