Q&A
ANSWERS
wedding
Straight talk, smart solutions by Diane Forden, Editor in Chief
Q
My maid of honor is planning my bridal shower and we both agree that children shouldn’t be included. Are we wrong? And how do we let people know? Honolulu, Hawaii
A
No, you’re not wrong unless you’re planning a non-traditional shower that will include husbands, partners and families. But for the most part bridal showers are for the grownups. (Little ones can become bored easily especially if all those gifts don’t include any toys for them!) Have your bridal party address the envelopes to invited guests only and spread the word that the gathering will be just for adults. BAR BILL TIPS
Q A
Any advice on how we might save on drink costs? Can we provide our own liquor? Freeport, Maine
If you plan on having your wedding at a hotel or banquet hall, the liquor will probably be provided. You’ll be quoted either a per-person fee or a total price for alcohol in your contract. The same is true with established independent caterers. If the caterer you choose does not have a liquor license, he or she will coordinate with a liquor vendor and quote you a price per bottle. If there are bottles left over, you can keep them (or the caterer might be willing to reimburse you for them), so you’ll only pay for what was actually consumed. If your facility allows it, you can supply the alcohol yourselves; this can be a huge money saver, especially if you purchase the liquor from a wholesaler. You will, however, have to order and arrange for delivery and cart away the unused bottles after the reception. Plus, you may be
subject to a corkage fee, a flat rate charged by the caterer per bottle opened, which can easily be $10 or more. Be sure to inquire about this beforehand. Consider skipping the pricey hard stuff and serve less costly wine and beer only. Or offer the site’s less expensive brands instead of the premium; the same goes for house wines and champagne. Also, discourage the waitstaff from automatically refilling wine glasses at dinner.
of the already established menu. But if you and your fiancé are real foodies, and the types of dishes served are most important to you, then you’ll need to choose another reception site that’s better equipped to meet your expectations.
MENU RE-DO
SWEET CHARITY
We found a venue we like but I’d like the chef to revamp almost the entire menu. Is it OK to ask him for a lot of changes or would this be Orlando, Florida insulting?
My fiancé and I would like our guests to make donations to two of our favorite charities. Can we let them know through an insert in Denver, Colorado our invitations?
Requesting minor changes to the reception menu is standard and most caterers will happily oblige. They’ll also prepare kosher, vegetarian and vegan dishes upon request. However, if your preferences involve completely revamping the menu then this might be too difficult for the chef. After all, his staff is trained to prepare certain types of dishes and a special order of different foods or ingredients that may not be readily available in his kitchen could be problematic and prove costly. On the other hand, depending on what your wishes are, he might be able to work with you. Why don’t you speak with the caterer about your menu requests before booking the venue? If he is unable to meet all your needs then you may have to compromise, especially if your heart is set on having your reception at this particular venue. Ask if he can prepare just one or two of your requests and then agree to the rest
The best way to inform them is by word of mouth since gift-giving should never be mentioned in the wedding invitation. You can, however, set up a website and inform your guests that way. Share some information about your favorite charities and the reasons you have selected them. Include the addresses where donations can be sent, as well as links to the charities’ websites. On your wedding invitation you can include “For more information about our wedding please visit (your website link).” You can also create a registry of your charities with I Do Foundation and JustGive. Go to Idofoundation.org and justgive.org for more information.

BEL AIRE BRIDAL
VEILED
ROMANCE Eric Smith of Bel Aire Bridal introduces the latest collection complete with lace and glittering accents designed to complement your gown for a stunning, wow-worthy look. What was the inspiration for the collection? Bel Aire takes inspiration from some of the top bridal gown designers. Our petite headpieces coordinate perfectly with beading found on many gowns. With hair styles being so varied, our headpieces inspire brides to be creative with placing and arranging their hair accessories. The 2020 veil collection saw the introduction of intricate beading, dramatic floral laces and modern shapes for cathedral-length veils.
LEFT: Metallic flower and leaf headband with clear crystals and floral sprigs, about $200. MIDDLE: Ivory tulle two-tier foldover cathedral-length veil, about $350. RIGHT: Ivory hair clip with organza peonies, lace leaves and rhinestone accents, about $150.
How can a bride express herself and stand out from the crowd with accessories? While there are
no rules, we recommend brides select accessories that complement an aspect of their dress or play to the theme or location of the wedding. There is simply nothing like a veil when it comes to a fully realized wedding look. Even if you’re not a head-over-heels romantic bride, this accessory is a musthave when it comes to ceremony and bridal portraits.
Are you seeing any specific trends in bridal accessories? While bridal trends shift subtly, we are
seeing continued strong desire for cathedral-length veils, cascading veil shapes, petite hair accessories and hair vines. And designs that have a nature-inspired look are perfect for destination or outdoor weddings.
What is your advice to brides searching for the perfect accessory? Be true to yourself, but keep an
open mind to stepping outside your comfort zone. Your wedding is the only time you’ll wear a veil and headpiece—so give it a go! That moment when a bride walks LAVISH LACE down the aisle in her wedding veil is Ivory cathedrallength veil trimmed simply irreplaceable.
What’s the best thing about being a bridal designer? The best thing about being
with baroque lace along the bottom curve, about $700.
a designer of bridal accessories is the ability to unleash creativity with new laces, beads, crystals and patterns. It is the icing on the cake to know that what you create makes a bride a bride by enhancing her wedding-day look. We like to think we are making the world more beautiful one bride at a time!—Anna Smutny

WELLNESS
EATING FOR TWO It’s all too easy to fall off the healthy-food track after the big day. Here, some key guidelines for newlywed nutrition.
Q
What are the best ways to get back on track, food-wise, after the wedding?
A
Planning really is the key when it comes to a healthy lifestyle. Just like no bride is going to wing it on her wedding day, you need to plan for healthy
eating and exercise as well. I always encourage my clients to plan their meals for the week, and use that plan as the basis for their shopping list.
Q
A
And what are some common misconceptions?
People think that healthy eating is expensive. But when you do the math, a homemade meal will always be less expensive than going out to eat. Convenience foods (pre-cut or prewashed fruits and veggies) inevitably cost more, which causes you to assess what your time
Enright’s Ground Rules • DO NOT FIXATE ON NUMBERS. “I have so many people who count every single calorie and they drive themselves insane. Or they get on the scale and actually punish themselves by not eating if it’s a number they don’t like. That is not a healthy relationship with food or yourself.” • PLATE FOOD BEFORE SERVING. “I grew up in a traditional Italian household where every meal had large serving platters placed in front of us. Seeing the additional food as you’re eating makes it more tempting to go back for more. Plating the food not only helps with portion control, but also allows me to account for leftovers that can go toward another meal.” • STICK TO ONE PLATE. “Fill half of it with veggies (and/or fruit), ¼ with a lean protein, and ¼ with a hearty whole grain. Make sure there is a variety of nutrient-dense food at your meals. It’s more important to have a healthy complete meal rather than worry how many calories are on that plate.” • FORGET “GOOD” AND “BAD”. “There are no good or bad foods, only food. And all foods fit a healthy eating plan—it just comes down to moderation.” • MAKE THE TREATS SPECIAL. “My husband and I love ice cream. But to me, it’s more worthwhile to get in the car and drive to the homemade ice cream parlor versus going in my freezer and scooping out some store brand. By having to go out of my way to get a treat, it makes me assess how badly I really want it (as opposed to just being bored). I get my scoop in a kiddie cup, and I’m happy with the small serving I get to enjoy.”
is worth. For me personally, my time is not worth washing and spinning a head of lettuce until it’s bone dry; I always buy the prewashed lettuce because it’s so much easier. But I buy just about all of my fruits and veggies in their whole form due to cost.
Q
What are the biggest obstacles to healthy eating?
Q
What about eating at restaurants? Any strategies?
A
The food-service industry preys on immediate gratification and convenience, which often leads to poor choices. If you can plan accordingly, you will have healthy food in your home most of the time and make better choices. Have one or two go-to meals in your arsenal that you know can be made under 30 minutes. Use your freezer to store some back-up meals that can be heated when needed (but not frozen pre-made meals, those are scary calorie bombs). Or have a place where you can pick up relatively healthy meals—local delis or supermarkets offer healthy to-go meal options —just be mindful of the portion sizes.
A
My husband and I usually go out to eat two times a week. Typically we’ll share either an appetizer or a dessert, very rarely both. And often we’ll coordinate our entrées, which means we’re that couple exchanging dishes across the table halfway through a meal. And we both aim to take enough food home with us to make another meal, which helps on nights when we know we’re working late. ¢

The goal: “Helping couples stay healthy past the ‘I do’,” Enright says. Here, she shares some wellness wisdom.

Q&A
NEED TO KNOW
MY QUESTIONS What kind of wedding would you like to have?
color), a secondary color (your accent color) and a third color (what I call the finish color: silver, crystal, copper or gold).
The answer I often get is “We want a unique, different, creative wedding” —which is not the answer I am looking for. Every couple wants something unique; I want to see how far outside the box the couple wants to go. The style and personality they want to come through are important, but I need to understand how far they’re willing to venture—and how much they’re willing to break with the formula of a traditional wedding.
How would you like to infuse your personalities into your celebration?
What’s your color scheme?
Are you Modern? Classic? Eclectic? Traditional? Retro? I ask this question because the answer gives me a sense of who you are as a couple, as well as the way you like to live.
Surprise: A lot of my couples don’t have a ready answer. Think about specific colors, preferably bringing in fabric swatches, paint chip colors, magazine tear sheets—anything that depicts what you’re envisioning. Ideally, I like to see three color choices per palette: a primary color (your main
I hope the couple answers by telling me more about who they are—the foods they love, their cultural backgrounds, stories about their relationship, etc. The reason I ask this is so I can tell the couple’s story. The more personality and detail in your wedding, the more your wedding becomes your wedding.
What style do you live your life in?
What style would you like your wedding to be executed in? The style a couple wants for their wedding may not be the style they live their lives by.
It’s often more of a fantasy they want to live out for that day.
MY COUPLES’ QUESTIONS How can I make my wedding different and unique? It isn’t about trying to find a unique theme or concept that’s different because that doesn’t necessarily make sense for who you are as a couple. Instead, aim for a wedding that breaks the mold of the traditional formula and timeline that everyone else follows. Have some interactive participation so your guests can’t predict what’s around the corner, and they leave feeling like they experienced—experience is they key word here—something unique.
Do I have to do all the expected formalities (for example, first dance as a couple, father-daughter dance, motherson dance, the bouquet toss, cake cutting)? You don’t have to do any of it! It’s your wedding and it is up to you when it comes to these traditions.
However, when making these decisions, take a moment to consider whether you will later regret not including them (e.g. having that special moment with your dad, your mom, etc.).
Should we have an afterparty or a separate late-night lounge area? Neither. Both break the energy and flow of the celebration, and you can lose guests that way. Keep everyone within the four walls of one space and try not to spread out too much for too long a period of time. Instead, opt for switching up the environment over the course of the evening. Have a lounge area within your reception space, then change up the entertainment, music and lighting to create a new atmosphere and keep the party going strong.
What are the season’s top color trends? Rather than go with the trends, pick colors that speak to you. If you follow your heart and stay true to what’s meaningful and special, a beautiful wedding will unfold. The truth to your wedding being your wedding is you being you!

ADVICE might walk you halfway down the aisle to your dad, who can then escort you the rest of the way to your groom—or vice versa.
Well Received PROBLEM: “Both my fiancé’s parents and my parents have divorced and remarried. Who should stand in the receiving line to meet and greet our guests?” SOLUTION: If everyone wants to
participate, here’s a sample lineup: bride’s mother, HINT: Figure out how you bride’s stepfather, want to handle groom’s stepfather, things before the wedding, and discuss groom’s mom, bride, your decisions with groom, bride’s stepmothyour parents. er, bride’s father, groom’s father, groom’s stepmother. Too long? It’s okay to simply include your biological parents, or to forgo the tradition altogether. Many couples prefer to visit each dinner table during the reception as a less formal way to thank everyone.
KEEP THE PEACE
A
s if wedding etiquette weren’t tricky enough. Bring divorced parents into the mix, and you’ve got sticky situations galore. Here, we discuss some typical problems, and offer a few solutions. Of course, every family is different, so feel free to improvise.
Take Your Seats PROBLEM: “My divorced parents don’t get along at all, and I have no intention of seating them anywhere near each other during the ceremony. What advice can you give me?” SOLUTION: At a typical wedding, the first few rows of seats are
reserved for close family members, with parents in the front row, grandparents and siblings in the second row, and so on. If the relationship between your parents is tense, traditional wedding etiquette states that the parent to whom you happen to feel closest—let’s say it’s your mom—would sit in the front row, while your dad would be seated in the third or fourth row (with your stepmother, if he has remarried).
Here Comes the Bride PROBLEM: “My stepfather feels more like a father to me than my real dad, and I’d like him to walk me down the aisle. Is there a way to do this without hurting my dad?” SOLUTION: This is a tough one. To avoid hurting your dad’s
feelings, consider these other possibilities: If your “fathers” get along well, perhaps they can both walk you down the aisle, one on each arm. If there’s friction between the two, your stepfather
Dancing Dos and Don’ts PROBLEM: “My fiancé wants to have a mother/son dance. Am I expected to only have a father/daughter dance? Can I also dance with my mom, who basically raised me?” SOLUTION: You’re under no obligation to have a traditional father/
daughter dance. Instead, you might include both your parents, with separate dances and songs for each of them. Or (our favorite option), choose one tune for a “parent dance.” Start out with Dad, then, halfway through the song, switch to your mom.
PHOTO PHOBIA Don’t worry: You don’t have to round everyone up for that “one big, happy family” photograph if your parents don’t get along or if you’re not particularly fond of a stepparent. But you should meet with your photographer ahead of time to discuss the types of photos you want and which members of your family should be included. A professional photographer is sure to have dealt with divorced family situations and can probably offer some expert advice on how to handle potential problems. As for that sticky question—“Does my obnoxious stepparent have to be in the photos?”—the answer is yes. Leaving a stepmother you dislike out of your wedding photos, for example, is bound to hurt her—and your dad’s—feelings and affect your relationship with them. So, have some shots taken of you and your groom with your father and stepmother. Your dad will have a keepsake, and both of them will appreciate your generosity.

PLAN LIKE A PRO TOP EXPERTS WEIGH IN ON THE BIGGEST BLUNDERS TO AVOID AS YOU PLOT YOUR BIG DAY. BY STELLA KATSIPOUTIS
MISTAKE: GOING OVER BUDGET Decide on your wedding budget before you plan or purchase anything, and stick to it! The biggest mistake I see brides make is when they jump right into the details, the plans and the purchasing before even pausing to think about the overall picture. You don’t want to start your marriage in debt, and a beautiful wedding can be planned for any amount of money, no matter how great or small. If you go over budget on one element, make sure to cut back somewhere else to make up for it. —David Tutera, celebrations expert, principal, The David Tutera Experience
The worst thing couples can do when picking their venue is not to discuss their budget. They head off on fun weekends to visit venues, fall in love with a place and book it. After that, they talk about the budget and start to really skimp on the other vendors. To avoid this, I suggest that couples discuss the budget before even looking at venues in person or talking to a salesperson. There are countless resources and online worksheets couples can use to figure out how to divide up their wedding money. The budget conversation is not usually very fun, but always necessary. Having the conversation at the beginning of planning will save a tremendous amount of stress down the line. —Lindsey Nickel, wedding planner & owner, Lovely Day Events
MISTAKE: THE WEDDING DATE Pick a day that will work best for your family, your budget, and the location of the wedding. Don’t try to get married in Chicago over marathon weekend or have a destination wedding during hurricane season. If your fiancé is an accountant, don’t get married in tax season! —Alyssa Olsen, catering director, Fairmont Chicago, Millennium Park
MISTAKE: VENUE SELECTION You can’t design something that flies in the face of the venue’s inherent decor. For instance, you can’t force all gold if there are many large silver chandeliers. You should always check to see what kinds of tabletop and decor pieces are already in-house, and see what you may want to bring in. Design with the venue in mind. Have your flower sample at the venue, bring samples of the rentals you have selected, etc. See it all together before you sign on the dotted line. —Ashley Douglass, owner & creative director, Ashley Douglass Events
A common mistake we see with couples and their wedding venue selection is picking a space that’s too big or too small for their anticipated guest count. Speak candidly with the site manager about an ideal headcount. PHOTOGRAPHY: JANA DILLON PHOTOGRAPHY
—Virginia Edelson, principal/owner, Bluebird Productions Venue selection is perhaps the most critical path in the early planning stages, short of finding your soul mate. Sometimes people choose a location that does not fit their aesthetic. Transforming a modern museum into a lush Southern garden-scape, or morphing a farmhouse into a sleek, contemporary space, are just two examples of “putting the big pot
in the little pot,” so to speak. —Calder Clark, wedding planner, owner & creative director, Calder Clark
MISTAKE: MISTIMED CORRESPONDENCE
NO PLAN B FOR OUTDOOR WEDDINGS Fail to plan, plan to fail. If you think it will rain, it won’t; if you think it won’t rain, it will. Instead of relying on the Nostradamus-like predictions of the local weatherman, always have a plan B— such as a tent or nearby indoor space— and like your plan B. —Calder Clark
Clients sometimes make the error of sending out their save-the-dates or invitations in those hectic weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, when everyone is receiving the most mail ever for the year. Even if December 20 seems as if it would be the perfect date to send your invite, it’s much better to send it much earlier— like the week before Thanksgiving—so it’s not lost. It’s common for mail to get lost by the USPS during December! —Ashley Douglass
MISTAKE:
MISTAKE:
NOT READING CONTRACTS
DIY OVERLOAD
Hidden costs can be an unwelcome surprise. Review your contract thoroughly, with a magnifying glass, and be aware of any fine print or potential additional costs for overtime, breakdown charges and any fees for lost or damaged items. Make sure to get everything in writing when you are finalizing your vendor contracts. —David Tutera
DIY is a great idea, but make sure you test it in advance. Don’t begin a project for your wedding a couple of weeks in advance only to realize it’s not going to work. You’ll be left trying to find a resolution with time running out.
MISTAKE:
MISTAKE: THE GUEST LIST Some couples over-invite and make budget sacrifices to accommodate more people. You’d be surprised how many guests that are invited to weddings are practically strangers to the couples. Chances are some or all of these people you don’t know very well will be surprised when they open their invitation. Save your budget for what you really want and need. —Ashley Douglass
The biggest mistake when it comes to creating a guest list: giving blind plusones. There is no reason to give blanket plus-ones to single guests if they already know other people at the wedding. —Virginia Edelson
—Alyssa Olsen
MISTAKE: RELYING ON FRIENDS Couples often allow friends to take part in their wedding day, either by being crafty or perhaps as musicians for their ceremony—with disappointing results. A wedding is not a dress rehearsal. It’s a bad idea to have loved ones bear the responsibility of something so important. Have a well-executed counter response when friends offer to help, something along the lines of, “We have had an outpouring of support from people who would like to help. While we greatly appreciate your offer, we have decided as a couple not to go this route. We are looking forward to having you with us that day as a guest, celebrating.” This being said, if you have a friend or family member who is a legitimate vendor in the industry, that is a different story. —Ashley Douglass
MISTAKE:
MISTAKE:
PHOTOGRAPHY
DECOR MISSTEPS
All too often, couples fall in love with the photos on a photographer’s Instagram feed or in their website portfolio. Sadly, some couples are disappointed when they receive their own wedding photos. That’s because Instagram and websites are marketing tools where photographers can carefully pick photos that work best on these platforms. To ensure that couples will love, love, love their photos, I always suggest that they ask the photographer to send them a gallery link to a recent wedding. This will give the clients a more accurate picture of what they can expect. —Lindsey Nickel
Rarely do flowers look amazing when they are not in season, and oftentimes they are significantly more expensive than seasonal flowers. If there is a particular bloom you love and it is not in season, talk to your florist about a substitute bloom that looks similar. —Virginia Edelson
MISTAKE: CASH BAR
While I only see it happen every so often, it absolutely is not appropriate or considerate to ask your guests to pay for their own alcoholic beverages while celebrating you. If your budget doesn’t allow for a full bar, consider serving a signature cocktail along with beer and wine only.
Don’t go overboard with flowers, which can be very expensive; warm, flickeringcandlelight for evening receptions is just as elegant and comes at a much, much lower cost. A healthy balance of the two is nice, or use more candlelight and fewer floral touches. —Alyssa Olsent Under- or over-decorating: Both are a tragedy. If you are unable to decorate as much as is needed, place one main unforgettable floral arrangement or decor feature as the focal point. Highlight it, dim the rest of the room and rely on candles. —Ron Wendt, owner, Ron Wendt Designs & Weddings
MISTAKE:
MISTAKE:
SEATING ARRANGEMENTS If you want the room to feel intimate, don’t spread the tables too far apart. Rectangular tables are more intimate than round ones, as they place you about two feet closer to the person across from you, making it more conducive to dinner conversation. Try to seat older guests near the dance floor. Younger guests will make their way to the dance floor no matter where they are seated. —Allison Aronne, wedding producer & partner, FÊTE NY
NOT GREETING GUESTS Be sure to build time into the day where you can connect with each guest. Whether you greet them after the ceremony or skip the dessert course to say hello to everyone at his or her table, it is super-important to do. The guests are there for you and want to extend their congratulations. Be sure your photographer is around when you are greeting friends and family. The pictures they capture of your guests’ true excitement will be priceless! —Alyssa Olsen
Unassigned seating sounds casual, low-stress and relaxing, but it can easily go wrong: Grandma can end up sitting next to your college roommate, and single people might get stuck with a group of couples. I suggest that you assign people to tables and let them pick the seat they want. This way, guests don’t have to worry about sitting with people they have nothing in common with, and everyone will enjoy their dinner companions. —Lindsey Nickel
—Courtney Wolf, wedding planner, Invision Events
Many couples choose a sweetheart table, but you have the rest of your lives to sit with each other at a table. On your wedding day, it’s important to spend time with your friends and family. —Colin Cowie, Colin Cowie Celebrations
MISTAKE: EVENT FLOW The wedding reception should feel organic, with each moment seamlessly flowing into the next. Avoid putting all the toasts or special dances together to get them over with. These are key, special moments that should be spread throughout the evening. —Allison Aronne
MISTAKE: CUISINE CONSIDERATIONS Don’t forget you’re feeding a large group. Just because you’re on a gluten-free pre-wedding diet does not mean the entire meal should follow suit. Conversely, trying to cover every single food group in one elegant three-course meal is overkill. Serve what your caterer does best, offer options and be excited to present a gorgeous seasonal meal. —Calder Clark
MISTAKE: STRESSING OUT
Don’t sweat the small stuff! Be prepared for little things to go wrong and know that it’s OK for everything else to fall by the wayside. That’s what all those months of planning and prep were for anyway. Enjoy the day, enjoy the moments and enjoy each other, because that’s what it’s all about. — David Tutera ¢
Splurge vs. Save REAL BRIDES REVISIT THEIR WEDDING COSTS AND REVEAL WHAT WAS— AND WASN’T—TOTALLY WORTH IT. by Elena Donovan Mauer
Unless you’re a Kardashian, you’re probably a bride on a budget. And keeping costs manageable will mean deciding what’s most important to you every time another wedding decision is thrown your way (six- or eight-piece band? filet or barbecue chicken? invitations embellished with Swarovski crystals or a simple but elegant design?). Here, some recent brides share what—with 20/20 hindsight—they did right and what they did wrong.
DAY-AFTER PARTY, CHARITABLE DONATIONS, TRANSPORTATION FOR TIPSY GUESTS—THE BRIDES HERE CALLED IT RIGHT FOR THESE EXPENSES. “I’m so glad I paid extra to get my makeup done professionally. I loved how I looked in my wedding photos—so much better than if I’d done my ‘usual’ makeup.” —Stephanie, Durham, NC “We set up a wine tasting for our guests at the reception, and had food stations instead of a sit-down dinner. They cost more, but I liked having something different for our guests to enjoy. They seemed to appreciate it—we got rave reviews for both.” —Meghan, Philadelphia, PA “We hired an excellent videographer who was able to really capture the day for us. We can now relive our memories any time. My kids love watching the video too!” —Kate, Boston, MA
“I thought that the dress and flowers were worth spending a little extra on. I got to feel like the beautiful, perfect bride!” —Karen, Oakmont, PA
“Instead of buying favors, we made a donation to the American Heart Association in honor of my husband’s father who died from a heart attack five years ago. No one seemed to care that there weren’t any favors, and I can’t think of a better way to spend money than to donate to a good cause.” —Beth, Pittsburgh, PA “We spent a lot of money on a talented photographer. She was able to capture all of the ‘action’ shots and got

good close-ups, too. Now we have amazing photos that are great mementos of that day.” —Mandy, Columbia, MD “We paid to extend the reception an extra hour. The added time with our family and friends was well worth it. And everyone was still in full party spirit up until the very last song was played!” —Emily, Pittsburgh, PA
“We splurged on really good food—and enough of it! That was important to us and well worth it.”
husband and I loved sharing more intimate time with friends and family—and extending the celebration one extra day.” —Kate
“Instead of a six-piece band, we added two extra horn players to make it an eight-piece band. I was afraid to —Erika, Jackson Heights, NY spend the extra money, but in the end it was worth every penny! I think the music was much more vibrant and enjoyable that way. And they played our first dance—“It Had to Be You”—so beautifully. Everyone still talks about how great our band was!” I think it’s worth splurging on a photographer and —Helen, Guttenburg, NJ videographer who produce high-quality work. After the day is over, the photos and video are what you’ll have to remember it. Nothing else lasts!” —Krista, Glenolden, PA “Our DJ was awesome. He brought along two assistants, which upped the cost a little bit more, but they really got the whole crowd pumped up. Should have skipped it! SOMETIMES THE LITTLE THINGS REALLY DON’T MAKE A DIFFERENCE, AND PILING UP DEBT CERTAINLY NEVER MAKES SENSE. HEED THESE WORDS OF WARNING. “The food at our reception was way overpriced and it was only the standard, boring buffet. Sometimes I think we should’ve considered having a more casual wedding and ordered food from an Italian restaurant or even barbecue from a BBQ joint!” —Lynda, Sterling, VA “I could have done without an expensive wedding cake and just served cupcakes. A friend of mine did that, and they were a big hit.” —Meg, Wilmington, DE “Make sure that you and your DJ are on the same page. We went over our playlist with him, but he still ignored most of what we wanted and played stuff we didn’t really like. If I had to do it over again, I’d just program my iPhone and get some speakers.”— Jennifer, Short Hills, NJ “I wish I’d spent less on flowers. All I really wanted was an eclectic mix of herbs and greenery, because that’s more my style, but I got talked up by the florist!” —Melissa, Brooklyn, NY “I had baskets of toiletry items placed in the bathrooms for guests, but no one used any of the stuff. The ceremony programs

seemed important when I was planning, but in the end I thought they were a waste of paper.” —Kate “I’m probably in the minority here, but I couldn’t justify spending a ton of money on my wedding dress. Of course I wanted it to be beautiful and something I felt good in, but I really couldn’t see spending over $1,000 on something I’d wear once. I found a dress at a chain retailer that I loved for $500 and was very happy with it.” —Erika, Jackson Heights, NY “I was so nervous about not having enough food that I went completely overboard on the cocktail hour with too many stations featuring heavy food, like sliced roast beef and sushi. People had no room for dinner, not to mention dessert!” —Emily
“We had a chocolate fountain. It was nice but not worth what it cost. No one would have missed it if it hadn’t been there.” —Emily, Pittsburgh, PA
“Oh, how I wish my photographer had gotten more photos of the guests. Most of the shots turned out to be of just me and my husband. If we’d had more group portraits and candid shots of friends and family, the costs for the photography would have been more worth it.” —Beth

YOUR MONEY
BIG-DAY SCHEDULE The planner meets with the couple a day or two before the wedding to go over last-minute details. Plans the bridal party rehearsal for early in the day to free everyone up to handle hair and makeup appointments, etc.
A top event expert explains the value of hiring a day-of planner. Is hiring a planner for just the wedding day a viable option for brides who can’t afford one for the whole nine yards? “Absolutely!” says Allison Sargent, who plans weddings and events in the New York tri-state area and nationally. “This is a way to use a planner strategically—to handle last-minute details so that you can relax and enjoy the day. We’ll meet with the client to find out their specific needs. We’ll also discuss the vendors the couple has hired and get all their contact information so that we can confirm the details. We’ll handle everything from the placement of the decor, place cards and favors to any crisis that might arise. (Bridesmaid stuck at the airport? We’ll personally drive there and get her! Flowers look awful? We know a florist who can troubleshoot. Musicians stuck in traffic in the Lincoln Tunnel? We’ll find substitutes through our network.)”
What does it cost? “This varies, depending on the size of the wedding, the location and the details that need handling. The average day-of range is from $1,800 to $3,500, depending on the staffing needed, whereas full-service planning fees start at about $8,000 and up.”
When should a bride hire a day-of planner? “Ideally, at least two months before the wedding,” Sargent tells us. “This time frame allows us to assist with the need for additional vendors or to handle contract negotiations and to plan wedding-related events, like brunches, golf outings, rehearsal dinners, spa parties—whatever you want.”
What’s the most important benefit of this service? “Peace of mind,” Sargent says. “Why be anxious on what’s supposed to be the happiest day of your life? I once had a huge wedding where the maitre d’ mistakenly whisked the cake away before the all-important cake-cutting photo op! I raced to the kitchen, where they were already starting to cut slices, repaired the cake and whisked it right back out! Your day-of planner should be ready to react to whatever the problem may be and have the resources to handle it.” ¢
Makes sure that all information about transportation and the bridal party is readily available. On the big day has coffee and breakfast on hand for the couple and the bridal party. Has the bride delegate a friend to carry makeup items for touchups before photos are taken. Delegates friends/family to handle gifts and envelopes. Has an emergency kit that includes sewing items, mints, stain sticks, etc. Makes sure that the event schedule coordinates with vendor meeting times, allowing extra time for the photographer to take prewedding shots. Sees that all the elements — music, flowers, programs, photography, guest book, etc.— are present and accounted for. While the ceremony is underway, oversees the set-up of the reception area, working closely with vendors. Manages the timing of the music, cake cutting, first dance, toasts, etc. Ensures that all day-of payments and gratuities are on hand for vendors. Oversees clean-up and packing of gifts and other items.

hen Ashley and Jonathon first met in college, they knew from the start that they had something special. After traveling the world together, Jonathon was certain that when it came time to finally pop the question it needed to be memorable. After a romantic helicopter ride down the Southern California coast, he asked Ashley to be his bride, to which she gave a resounding “Yes!” Later, while on a trip to Hawaii, the couple visited the Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina and knew it was the ideal place to hold their nuptials. “The hotel was recently remodeled and it was the perfect size for an intimate wedding,” said the bride. The pair opted for a theme of elegant simplicity, with an eye toward playing up the tropical environment of the stunning Hawaiian landscape. A color scheme of whites, greens and dusty pinks and lavenders highlighted the reception and ceremony locations. In addition, the bride and groom wanted their decor to mimic the natural surroundings with stunning florals, draped greenery and hanging foliage. They chose a menu featuring fresh salad, lobster ravioli, braised short ribs, sauteéd market catch, and tofu teriyaki, along with passed hors d’oeuvres for the cocktail hour. The event was commemorated with a choreographed flash mob and heartfelt, individualized speeches. After the celebration, the couple reflected on their wedding and said, “It was by far the most special weekend of our lives” —Anna Smutny

Personal Touches Growing up, Ashley, her sister and niece would frequently dance to “Thriller.” To the delighted surprise of their guests, the couple incorporated the dance into the reception with the entire bridal party participating in the routine. The groom was surprised by his mother during an impromptu motherand-son dance when she brought out hair brushes for the pair to use as “microphones.” The couple shared a laugh when Ashley's veil blew off during her walk down the aisle (and was quickly repinned).

Alison Mahoney and Peter Dearing tied the knot with a Cape Cod bash filled with vintage decor and soft pink accents. PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID PERLMAN PHOTOGRAPHY

The bride and groom departed the ceremony in a baby-blue 1952 Studebaker convertible.
fter dating for two and a half years, Peter knew that Alison was “the one” and set out to propose to her in a special and memorable way: While taking a leisurely walk together in New York City, they were stopped by a flash mob (planned by Peter), dancing to Hall & Oates’s “You Make My Dreams Come True,” one of Alison’s favorites. Peter joined in, ending the spectacle by asking Alison to be his wife. Following a year-long engagement, the couple hosted their nuptials at the Wychmere Beach Club in Harwichport, Cape Cod. “Since it’s always been my favorite place in the world, it only seemed right to be married on the Cape,” said Alison. “We are pretty traditional, and wanted the day to have a classic feel.” To reflect this, the couple’s save-the-date cards were vintage Cape Cod maps. The pair selected a palette of blush pink, white, sage green and gold. With gold retro-inspired accents, long-stem floral arrangements and tall, clear candle holders that made the candles seem to float, an old-world, romantic vibe was set. The guests were treated to passed hors d’oeuvres, artisan field greens salad, seared filet mignon, local swordfish steak and sweet pea ravioli. As Alison is a skilled baker, the guests were given hand-baked lemon elderflower sugar cookies in the shape of Cape Cod with a heart marking the spot where the two got married. ”It was a joyful and loving day,” said the couple, “filled with laughter, dancing and celebration.” —Anna Smutny
Personal Touches • To enhance the classic feel, Alison and her mother purchased 120 vintage champagne coupes to include in the place settings. • Many of Alison and Peter’s friends work in the music and theater industries. The couple asked each of them to perform some of their favorite songs throughout the cocktail hour.

Raffles Hotel Singapore Chances are there’s not much you can do IRL to live like the ultra-tony class in Crazy Rich Asians. But a stay at the Raffles Hotel, a grande dame that’s been welcoming discerning visitors for more than 130 years, is an awesome lodging option for your trip of a lifetime. The all-suite property is also home to Singapore’s national cocktail—the Singapore sling. First crafted in 1915 at the Long Bar, the refreshing blend of gin, liqueurs, bitters and pineapple juice served straight up with a maraschino cherry was created to look like pink fruit juice for the ladies. Why? It was frowned upon for women to consume alcohol in public (room rates start at about $705 a night and include a limo transfer; raffles.com).

Recharge, relax, and rest easy with these beginner tips to making the most of your first spa visit. by Jenna Mahoney
S
pa-ing. It is one of the world’s most luxurious, relaxing and blissful experiences. It can also be a bit intimidating—especially if you’ve never been sans clothes in a small room with a total stranger. Even if you have gotten a massage or facial in the past, you may need a refresher on the dos and don’ts of hitting the spa.
DO YOUR RESEARCH The difference between a fabulous spa experience and a meh one starts before you even enter the building. After looking at the menu, call to make an appointment. Ask pointed questions about specific treatments and express any concerns you may have. For example, if you are claustrophobic you may want to pass on that full-body seaweed wrap, which could include a solid 15 minutes of being tightly wrapped in a heated blanket—arms included. Or if you plan to spend most of your honeymoon on the beach, an exfoliating facial peel may not be the best idea. Also ask about the spa amenities. Are there wet rooms—
steam, Jacuzzis and the like? Are the relaxation areas co-ed? Can you reserve a couples-only spot? And, if it matters to you, request the gender of your therapist now. It’ll be tough to change once you arrive at your appointment.
ARRIVE EARLY It’s a good idea to be at the spa 15 minutes before your scheduled treatment. That’ll give you ample time to fill out any necessary paperwork (most spas have questionnaires that alert therapists to your likes, dislikes, allergies and injuries), change out of your street clothes, sip the complimentary herbal-infused water and teas and get into a more relaxed state of mind. Note: Some spas won’t administer certain treatments to expectant mothers. Alert your therapist, so she can suggest an appropriate one. Bump up your arrival time if you plan on using the steam and sauna facilities prior to your treatment. And be prepared—some people prefer to steam in the nude. Co-ed areas, though, generally require folks to don swimsuits.
SPEAK UP While the intake questionnaire should specifically target things like preferred pressure and desired areas to target, it’s a good idea to go over this once you meet your therapist. Tell her anything else she may need to know—your sports injuries or if you are especially ticklish, for example. If it’s your first time, let your therapist know. She can talk you through the treatment before she starts. Now’s also the time to use the restroom—having to hop off the table mid-massage is not only uncomfortable it eats into your treatment time. Most therapists ask about pressure and style once they’ve begun; let them know if it’s OK. Also, if you’ve got a Chatty Cathy and you’d prefer silence, say so.
LOUNGE SOME MORE Now that you’ve been rubbed like Kobe beef, you’ll want to extend that feeling of absolute calm and bliss. Take a dip in the Jacuzzi, spend some time in the sauna or kick back on a heated lounger. Some spas offer healthy-food menus. If you have the time, it’s a treat to sip green juice while relishing the tranquility. When you’re finally ready to face the real world, remember that a 20% gratuity is customary for spa services. ¢

other accessories during your treatment. It’s a good idea to arrive without fine jewelry, so you won’t have to put it in your locker. And store your cell phone—you’re there to disconnect! Change into your robe before wandering around the relaxation areas. Unless you are getting a full-body scrub or water therapy, you don’t need to completely disrobe for a treatment. Although linens are changed between clients, some people prefer to keep their underwear on. Or, if provided, you may change into paper bottoms. Bikinis or swim trunks are encouraged for any services on the beach or poolside.

Sky Lights
Canada’s Aurora Village.
AT CAMP
Located under the center of the auroral oval, Yellowknife, Canada is one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights; they’re visible up to 240 days a year. Aurora Village has 21 teepees kitted out with woodburning stoves and hot drinks so that you can await the aurora in comfort. Tours include guided walks, hotel pickup and drop-off—stay at nearby The Explorer Hotel (room rates start at $105 a night; explorerhotel.ca).
Deplar Farm on Iceland.
GO REMOTE
Romantic family-run Hotel Búðir is located on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula of West Iceland. The hotel is ideally placed for catching the aurora and staff provides wake-up calls when the lights appear (room rates start at $225 a night, hotelbudir.is). Occupying a converted sheep farm in a remote valley in northern Iceland, Deplar Farm’s floor-to-ceiling windows provide front-row seats for the light show—as does the geothermalheated indoor/outdoor pool with swim-up bar (room rates start at $2,200 a night and are all inclusive; elevenexperience.com).
FUN FACT: During particularly strong displays, some people have claimed to hear the aurora making a crackling or clapping sound. Long dismissed as the stuff of legend, scientists recently discovered that noises can occur.
WITH WILDLIFE
Hello, local.
Churchill in Manitoba, Canada, is known as “the polar bear capital of the world” for the many bears that come onto land from the Hudson Bay in fall. The town is also one of the world’s aurora capitals. Combine the spectacular nature experiences on Lazy Bear Lodge’s Ultimate Polar Bear Adventure. It includes getting up-close to polar bears in tundra vehicles, dog sledding and cultural tours (five-night packages start at $4,660 and are all inclusive with flights from Winnipeg; lazybearlodge.com).
Take a voyage with Hurtigruten in Norway.
ON A CRUISE
Getting out onto the water, away from the light pollution on land, amplifies your chances of enjoying the northern lights. Cruise line Hurtigruten, which offers a special voyage with an astronomer, sails around Norway’s coast from Kirkenes to Bergen. Aurora sightings are announced to guests on board and the team is so confident that they’ll make an appearance between October and March that if they don’t, Hurtigruten will give you a free cruise the following season (staterooms start at $978 per person for six-day sailings; hurtigruten.com).

Seeing the northern lights, or aurora borealis, is a bucket-list item for many. One of nature’s most spectacular displays, the phenomenon occurs when electrically charged solar particles collide with atmospheric gases to produce a dazzling light show in the sky. They’re most visible in cold, dark areas, so you’ll need little persuasion to snuggle up to enjoy the show. From North America to Northern Europe, here are some of the best ways to experience the night show. —Karen Gardiner

Old World, New World MEXICO’S ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA, THANKS TO ITS AMAZING BLEND OF CHARMING HISTORIC ATTRACTIONS, MODERN CUISINE, NEW ACCOMMODATIONS AND AWESOME BEACHES. BY CARRIE BELL
“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and six pesos in your shoe.” Of course, that’s not exactly how the Old English rhyme that couples incorporate into their big-day designs and looks in hopes of securing a fortuitous future goes. But what if you turned the age-old superstition into a template for trip planning when it comes time for the honeymoon? With its bounty of beaches, new luxury hotels, pampering spas, historic sites and colonial cities, Mexico is a perfect place to plan an auspicious adventure using these good-luck gambits.

TODOS SANTOS Encompassed by the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains about 50 miles north of Cabo, the cactus-dotted desert meets the crystalline ocean in this small town where hippies and hipsters coexist and a quaint vibe persists despite an ever-growing influx of tourists and development. SOMETHING OLD: The practice of yoga can be traced back
5,000 years; some believe it’s closer to 10,000 years old. For the last three years, guests of Hotel San Cristobal Baja have been going with the flow for free six days a week. Wednesday’s restorative class meets in the evening in the chapel while Friday’s high-energy session includes a hike to an outdoor platform. There’s also a bonus full-moon practice. Speaking of hikes, the concierge leads a challenging weekly trek where you can soak up the magical geography that surrounds the chic small boutique hotel on the beach. And if you find yourself a little sore, you can slip into an outdoor sunken tub (room rates start at $285 a night; sancristobalbaja.com). SOMETHING NEW: Three species of threatened sea turtles use the area’s beaches as nests and several organizations including Grupo Tortuguero and Tortugueros Las Playitas are devoted to helping the hatchlings. Many have fall and winter programs where animal lovers can participate in conservation efforts, such as measuring eggs and relocating endangered nests. SOMETHING BORROWED: To borrow a phrase from Jacques Cousteau, the Sea of Cortez is the “aquarium of the world.” La Paz, the capital of the state and a fantastic jumping-off point for aquatic tours of all varieties including sport fishing and scuba diving, is only an hour’s drive away from Todos Santos.
MEXICO Home to more than 900 species of fish, 32 types of marine mammals and five of the world’s seven endangered turtle species, La Paz is one of the best places on Earth to swim with whale sharks (the season typically runs November to May), giant manta rays and California sea lions. SOMETHING BLUE: Sunsets are anything but basic when watched from under the giant open-air palapa on the patio of El Mirador overlooking the ocean. Feast on fresh beets, greens and herbs harvested from the restaurant’s organic garden, and a fresh tuna filet with avocado chimichurri. There’s also an open-air gym, a natural cenote, meditation spaces among the mangroves and a spa set in the lush jungle. SOMETHING BORROWED: Foodies should add a stop at Mahekal Beach Resort’s Culinary Casita to their Riviera Maya calendar. The cooking class, which starts with a copal incense blessing, adopts traditional techniques like utilizing heated pit ovens, local ingredients and recipes (lime soup and fish tikinxik—adobo-rubbed fish cooked in a banana leaf). Guests staying in one of the 196 bungalows can borrow a beach cruiser to take a spin around splashy Playa del Carmen or check out a new beach read from Agave Bar’s lending library. here’s a certain magic to all-inclusive hotels: Once you’ve signed on for a specified rate, any thoughts of payment disappear for the rest of the trip (because really, what’s less romantic than stressing over a bill?) and you’re left to focus exclusively on each other. Well, that and figuring out how to make the most of everything that’s included in your stay—as fun a challenge as newlyweds will ever face. Sure, the Caribbean is chocka-block with excellent all-inclusive resorts, but did you know that we also have some amazing options here in the United States? See what makes America great and book into one of these excellent all-inclusive hideaways.
T
Travaasa Hana Maui, Hawaii Before you even get to this resort, it gifts you a major honeymoon bonus: a trip along the fabled road to Hana—all thundering waterfalls, dense rain forests, narrow bridges, hairpin turns and crazy views of Maui. And if you do have any white-knuckle moments en route, they’ll be immediately forgotten in your newfound “Hana state of mind”—that is, the chill that ensues on arrival in this supernaturally lush and laid-back place. As for what to do here beyond holing up in your suite or bungalow (the latter decked out with a Pacific-facing lanai), you won’t want for choice: horseback riding, stand-up paddling, waterfall hiking, ukulele strumming, bamboo pole fishing, beach bumming, bike cruising—and the list goes on. Between the activity lineup and the fact that you are—let’s remember—on your honeymoon, you’d be forgiven for never being awake early enough to verify one of the hotel’s claims to fame: being the first resort on the island of Maui to see the sunrise. You’ll have no problem, however, verifying how fabulous the hotel’s kitchen offerings are. Set amongst the hills and palms that overlook Hana Bay, the Preserve Kitchen + Bar serves up super-fresh local fare to the stylings of live Hawaiian music. And because everything is included, rest assured you won’t be holding back (room rates start at $1,025 a night and are all inclusive. Note: à la carte rates are also available; travaasa.com). Steamboat Springs, Colorado
Mohonk Mountain House in New York.
This luxury-leaning dude ranch is gorgeous year-round, but it’s a particular favorite among honeymooners in winter, when the fireplaces, snowy surroundings, sleigh rides and all that reflexive snuggling make for ridiculous levels of romance. When you’re not busy skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, fat-tire biking, ice fishing or horseback riding (yes, even in winter), you can chill by the wood-burning stove in your secluded log cabin—or in your private hot tub under the stars. Of course, if you decide to visit in spring, summer or fall, you’ll still find plenty of fun. There’s kayaking, fly-fishing, hiking, paddle boarding, rock climbing and mountain biking, for starters. Romance bonus: Some weekends in September and October are adults-only. As for what you’ll be refueling on, it’s just the right blend of “ranchy and fancy.” Think farm-raised, antibiotic- and hormone-free beef, pork and chicken grilled up to Old West perfection. On the other hand, vegetarians and vegans are equally well-tended to (room rates in winter start at $3,300 for the three-night minimum stay and are all inclusive; vistaverde.com).
Twin Farms
Barnard, Vermont When the Nobel prize-winning author Sinclair Lewis proposed to journalist Dorothy Thompson, she made a farm in Vermont “with delicious air” a condition of her acceptance. Now, the very 18th-century farmhouse set on 300 acres that got the pair hitched is the perfect place to celebrate your own newlywed life. Adults-only, high end and achingly romantic, this Vermont idyll is home to stellar hiking, canoeing, fly-fishing, swimming and picnicking. There’s also a house pub with billiards, pianos and an art collection that includes a piece by Cy Twombly. In winter, go for the ice-skating on Copper Pond, where staff will meet you with hot toddies—then soak in the 104degree Japanese furo (soaking tub). As for the lodgings, each is distinctive—and if you go big, go with the barn: a two-story structure with floor-to-ceiling windows, a woodstove, and a stone hot tub set by a fieldstone fireplace (room rates start at $1,900 a night and are all inclusive; twinfarms.com).

New Paltz, New York
What began in 1869 as a 10-room inn on the shores of Hudson Valley glacial Lake Mohonk has since matured into a sprawling Victorian retreat with landmark status and five U.S. presidents in the guest books. Having passed to the fourth and fifth generations of the original owner’s family, Mohonk Mountain House continues to add amenities and upgrades (you can even do an AR tour of the resort’s historic art collection), while retaining that original mountain hideaway vibe. The activities included in your stay range from (in summer) mountain biking and rock climbing to (in winter) cross-country skiing and ice-skating. Though the architecture is grand and gorgeous, the lake is the arguable showstopper here, so don’t be surprised to find yourself there—whether in a borrowed kayak, canoe, paddleboat or rowboat (or on top of a stand-up paddleboard)—for much of your stay. You’ll also get amazing views of the water from the Granary, where you can eat in warm weather. While all your meals are included, one element you may want to explore is not: the spa (a fairly typical exception to the all-inclusive concept). But the facilities and treatments are renowned in the wellness world, so if you’re in the market for some couples’ treatments,
this is the place to indulge. The signature 80-minute Elements of Nature Mohonk Red Couples’ massage is particularly divine, what with the fireplace in your treatment room—and the blend of Hawaiian and Thai treatment techniques (room rates start at $470 a night and are all inclusive; mohonk.com).
The Lodge on Little St. Simons Island Golden Isles, Georgia
For a coastal nature-loving couple, there’s little so lovely as the Golden Isles between Savannah and Jacksonville—a blend of marshland, islets, beaches and wildlife. The most romantic place to enjoy all of the above is The Lodge on Little St. Simons—a private island with 11,000 acres of Nature Conservancy-managed wilderness, seven miles of beaches and no access except by boat. Naturalist-led activities include birding, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, cycling and beach-combing. But even just wandering back to your cottage—under the oh-so romantic Spanish moss that’s everywhere—furthers the otherworldly vibe. Perhaps unsurprisingly, much of the food is grown onsite at the resident organic farm, and the seed-to-table results make for memorable meals (room rates start at $1,199 for three nights and are all inclusive; littlestsimonsisland.com). ¢

STAR RESORT NoMad Las Vegas.
W
Want to honeymoon where the celebs do? In each issue, we take a peek at a star-studded hideaway.
hen it came to making it legal as husband and wife, one-third of the famous Jonas Brothers, Joe Jonas, and Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner went way more low-key than the multiple-day and multi-millions extravaganza of his younger brother Nick in India. Instead the pair swapped “I do’s” following the Billboard awards in a quickie yet ultra-romantic Vegas ceremony surrounded by bandmates and friends. (Diplo notably Instagramstoried the event.) It’s said the couple then toasted to their union with an intimate dinner for those rumored 30 guests in attendance. Located within the new Park MGM, the hip and exclusive NoMad Las Vegas is the perfect perch for a sophisticated celebration that’s intimate and just the right amount of rambunctious. The Casino Bar, which is adjacent to the high-roller European-style gaming rooms, features a Tiffany glass ceiling and bespoke cocktails. Draped in rich velvets, the NoMad Bar is another gathering space that welcomes convivial moments. To toast like the stars, reserve one of the private dining areas. They include The Cellar, which can host up to 30 and specializes in wine-paired formal dinners surrounded by vintage decanters and bottles of wine. The Salon feels like a highend speakeasy with a private cocktail bar and emerald decor touches, including tufted walls. The hotel’s main restaurant is at once refined and decadent in design—the centerpiece of the room with ceilings that soar 23 feet is an imported 18th-century French antique fireplace and staircase. This being Vegas, the pool here is cool. Cabanas and loungers are comfortable and oh-so-private. Weekends welcome posh pool parties complete with the hottest DJs (room rates start at $149 a night; nomadlasvegas.mgmresorts.com). —Jenna Mahoney

Reasons to Shop at Your Local Bridal Salon
The YES Moment
You,ve probably been dreaming of this day for a long time—with good reason! There is no greater feeling than trying on a wedding gown and seeing yourself as a bride for the very first time. Surrounded by friends and loved ones makes the YES moment that much sweeter! Selection
Make the Dress Your Own
Bridal salons offer the largest selection of reputable designers, styles, and colors.Your consultant will work directly with the designer to ensure everything from the color, to the fabric and the fit, are exactly what you envision.
The dress you try on in the store is just a starting point. Want to add a sleeve? Lower the back? Elongate the train? At a traditional bridal salon, you can work with a seamstress to customize your gown and turn your dream into a reality.
Feel-Good Factor
Special Pricing
When you buy from a trusted, local bridal salon, you not only support your community, but also small businesses mostly owned by women!
No Surprises You get what you pay for. A designer dress may be pricier than similar versions online, but counterfeit gowns can be poorly constructed, ill-fitting, and made out of cheap fabrics, if you receive your gown at all.
If budget is a concern, there are many ways to shop smart at a local salon. Many brick-and-mortar stores offer discounts at designer trunk shows, and host sample sales annually.
So Much More Than Just the Gown Your trained consultant will take precise measurements, assist with alterations, and put you at ease throughout the entire process. The salon will even steam your gown and store it safely until your wedding day!
