Reasons to Shop at Your Local Bridal Salon
The YES Moment
You,ve probably been dreaming of this day for a long time—with good reason! There is no greater feeling than trying on a wedding gown and seeing yourself as a bride for the very first time. Surrounded by friends and loved ones makes the YES moment that much sweeter! Selection
Make the Dress Your Own
Bridal salons offer the largest selection of reputable designers, styles, and colors.Your consultant will work directly with the designer to ensure everything from the color, to the fabric and the fit, are exactly what you envision.
The dress you try on in the store is just a starting point. Want to add a sleeve? Lower the back? Elongate the train? At a traditional bridal salon, you can work with a seamstress to customize your gown and turn your dream into a reality.
Feel-Good Factor
Special Pricing
When you buy from a trusted, local bridal salon, you not only support your community, but also small businesses mostly owned by women!
No Surprises You get what you pay for. A designer dress may be pricier than similar versions online, but counterfeit gowns can be poorly constructed, ill-fitting, and made out of cheap fabrics, if you receive your gown at all.
If budget is a concern, there are many ways to shop smart at a local salon. Many brick-and-mortar stores offer discounts at designer trunk shows, and host sample sales annually.
So Much More Than Just the Gown Your trained consultant will take precise measurements, assist with alterations, and put you at ease throughout the entire process. The salon will even steam your gown and store it safely until your wedding day!

Q&A
ANSWERS
wedding
Straight talk, smart solutions by Diane Forden, Editor in Chief
Q
Do we need to explain to our ushers where to seat guests for the ceremony or can they just seat them at random? Santa Fe, New Mexico
A
Usually the first few rows are reserved for the bride’s and groom’s immediate families so you’ll need to let your ushers know who those people are and to seat them accordingly. Traditionally, the bride’s parents sit in the first row on the left (facing the ceremony site), along with her grandparents and siblings. If the bride’s parents are divorced and prefer to sit separately, the mother and her husband or partner will sit in the first row while the father and his wife (or partner) sit behind them in the second row. Other special relatives may be seated in the second and third rows. The groom’s family is seated in the same manner, but on the right side. BRIDAL PARTY PRESENTS
Q A
When is the best time to give our attendants their gifts? Corpus Christi, Texas
Most couples give their gifts to the wedding party at the rehearsal dinner. Following the main course, dessert is served and the toasts begin. Just so you know, it is customary for the best man to start off by toasting the couple, followed by the groom’s father (traditionally the groom’s parents are the hosts of the event). Afterward, you can acknowledge your attendants and give them the gifts. How you do so is entirely up to you. You can keep things lighthearted and fun or be a bit more sentimental. You can make a general announcement and dispense the gifts all
at once, or you might want to say something special about each member of your wedding party before presenting that person with your memento. Do what feels most natural and comfortable. One couple I know chose to have an intimate bridal-party-only barbecue at their home the day before the rehearsal dinner, and distributed their gifts then. I’m sure your friends will appreciate however you choose to honor them. SAVE-THE-DATE DILEMMA
Q A
Do we need to send out a savethe-date notice to everyone on the guest list? Lancaster, Pennsylvania
It depends. I recommend that you send all your guests save-the-dates (six to eight months in advance) if you are planning a destination wedding, marrying on a holiday weekend or even if your celebration will take place at a location that gets booked up early, like a beachfront resort or a hotel near a ski resort. However, if you’re marrying locally but inviting anyone who will need to travel, send save-the-dates to the out-of-towners only so they can make their arrangements for transportation and accommodations well in advance.
BEAUTY BUDGET
Q
Am I supposed to pay for my bridesmaids to have their hair and makeup professionally done? As much as I’d like to it would be Washington, D.C. quite costly.
A
You definitely aren’t obligated to pay for their hair and makeup; they can take care of that on their own. There
are some brides who are able to absorb the fees as a thank-you to their attendants but if your budget is limited—and with costs being as high as they are— don’t feel pressured to take on this additional expense. IN-LAW REQUEST
Q
My fiancé’s sister-in-law wants to be in my wedding party and his mom told him it’s proper etiquette to include her. Is this true? I don’t know her well and have other friends I’d like to ask instead.
A
Ann Arbor, Michigan
There’s no etiquette rule stating that a groom’s sister-in-law should be a bridesmaid. And don’t feel pressured to ask anyone you’re not close with. She probably wants to be included because your fiancé’s brother (her husband) will be either best man or a groomsman. You can still include her in the ceremony by asking her to give a special reading at the ceremony. And make sure your fiancé supports your decision—especially with his mom. ››› Go to bridalguide.com/QA for more etiquette advice. And send your planning questions to us at mail@bridalguide.com.

AUGUSTA JONES
CLASSIC
STYLE
Traditional silhouettes and luxe fabrics perfectly define the romantic collection of Robert Bullock for Augusta Jones. How would you describe the design aesthetic of the new collection? I wanted to keep the classic elements of the collection and bring in a fresh vibe that was a move forward, without making it all about trend. Classic is classic for a reason.
How would you like a bride to feel when she is wearing one of your designs?
I want a bride to wake up on her wedding day excited about putting on her gown. I love to see the “day-of” snapshots of the bride getting ready. And I love when brides reach out to me on the big day; messages filled with amazing joy. Nothing makes me happier!
LACE EFFECT Lace gown (above and sketch) with satin waistband about, $3,300. *All gowns available at Robert Bullock for Augusta Jones; augustajones.com.
What are some of your favorite materials to work with and why? It’s interesting how fabrics come back around in fashion over time, even as styles change. In bridal you have your iconic fabrics, such as satin, but right now I’m feeling it with dresses that have a lighter touch. Silk chiffon is a favorite, as well as Chantilly lace for flow and softness.
What's the biggest trend you are seeing in bridal fashion? It’s been a few years now since Kate
Middleton walked down the aisle in her stunning Sarah Burton gown. At the time I wondered if long sleeves would become popular again and they finally have. I admire all the many sleeve styles that are showing up and am working on some that function like accessories. FEMININE FLAIR
What is your biggest styling tip for a bride? Wear the gown; don’t let the gown wear
you. And most importantly, don’t skimp on your shoes! Brides sometimes say to me, “No one will see them” and I call them out on that. We will see your shoes. Trust me.
What advice would you give to brides who are searching for the perfect gown?
Chiffon dress with long sleeves and high neckline, about $2,400.
ABOVE:
Mikado halter neckline gown with mermaid skirt, about $1,750. RIGHT: Full-skirted gown with lace bodice and off-theshoulder three-quarter sleeves, about $3,000.
Don’t. Perfection is a noun, not a gown. What’s perfection is the feeling you feel in the gown you love. It’s about you, not what your shopping buddies love. Again, think about the day of and how excited you’ll be to wear it, to walk in it, to get married in it. –Anna Smutny

SUCCESS Here’s how one bride lost over 50 pounds before her wedding day. by Mary Clarke
AFTER
STORY
>> THE BRIDE Mali Fraleigh. A project
>> FOODWISE “Breakfast
manager for an insurance company,
was (and still is) typically a combination of eggs and fruit.
Mali lives in Gainesville, Florida, with her husband, Sam, and their two dogs. “We were married at a nature preserve in my hometown of Appleton, Wisconsin.” >> HER BIG-DAY GOAL “I wanted to feel confident in my wedding dress and cherish my pictures for years to come.
I wanted to be able to look back and be proud of myself for all I could accomplish in 10 months.”
“Going to the gym, grocery shopping and cooking meals used to be chores for me, but now I enjoy them. Each of these ‘tasks’ gives me time to spend with my husband after a busy day at work, and that is invaluable to me.”
>> WHY WW (formerly Weight Watchers) “My grandmother was a lifelong member and employee and swore by the program.
She passed away the summer before my wedding, so this gave me something I could do to feel close to her.” >> ON THE PROGRAM “I followed WW exclusively on the app. Rather than attend meetings IRL, I relied on Connect, WW’s members-only social network. Whenever I was having a hard day I’d scroll through Connect and see the challenges, stories and successes of others, which kept me super-motivated.” >> GAME ON “Calorie counting, eating at a caloric deficit never clicked for me,
but the assignment of ‘points’ to each food made WW feel a bit like a game. The program’s flexibility reminds me that not every day can be perfect. I could still feel successful even if I’d indulged a bit.”
When I want to mix it up, I’ll do protein waffles and chicken sausage or low-sodium bacon. I BEFORE get creative with salads or wraps at lunch, using leftovers like shredded chicken, adding beans or corn for a southwestern flavor, and trying different yogurt-based dressings. A typical dinner at our house is sautéed veggies with a protein like grilled chicken. ” >> FITNESS “I started with WW’s “Couch to 5K” program, which let me build up my endurance at >> BIGGEST CHANGES “I’ve always a pace that wouldn’t overwhelm and drive me to immediately quit. I’m a huge snacker, so finding zero and low-point options (rice “My now-husband motivated me crisps, fruit, veggies with yogurt dips) when I couldn’t motivate myself, was key. >> GOALS “I wanted to lose 25 pounds— I doubled that! And I wanted to run one mile without stopping—I exceeded that, too. When I started this journey, I thought there was an end in sight, that I’d lose the weight and not have to be as strict anymore. But after shedding 25 pounds, my new regime became a part of my every day, and I can’t imagine it any other way.”¢

ADVICE The modern bride’s decor will include clean lines, lots of mixed metallics, mirrored accents and white marble surfaces to create a dramatic environment that still feels high end. Orchids, tulips and calla lilies mixed in monochromatic colors in geometric containers with angular edges or sheen bring out the beauty in simplicity.
THE ECLECTIC BRIDE: DRAMATIC FUN The eclectic bride is hip and funky, and up for anything. Your wedding will reflect your bold personality, with elements both unexpected and totally fabulous. By adding splashes of color throughout, you’ll let guests know they’re in a wedding scene unlike any other. A whirl of textiles in bohemian patterns and a variety of textures combined with specialty tents and seating creates a look of out-of-the-box extravagance. Don’t be afraid to mix bold colors here for a truly unique, personal feel. Think colorful flowers recreating your favorite piece of art, interesting containers, irregularly shaped blooms (such as orchids) and unique foliage to capture your essence.
THE GARDEN BRIDE: REFRESHING WHIMSY You’re the bride with the playful, romantic persona: you lean toward floral topiaries, chiffon and other sheer fabrics, wrought iron, rustic urns and sun-drenched grasses. Antique-inspired accents and flirty garden roses create the magic of an enchanted garden. Light, airy materials set within the fragrant, natural harmony of an outdoor environment create the perfect, gentle scenario for the bride who always loves to stop and smell the flowers.
WHAT’S YOUR STYLE? One of my first questions to any bride is “What kind of bride are you and what is your wedding style?” Now I’m not trying to find out what kind of person you are at work or at home, or what kind of style you’ve followed until now—the fact is, you as a bride may end up learning that you are entirely different from your everyday persona. In my book The Big White Book of Weddings I discuss style in detail. Here, in a nutshell, are four bridal styles to consider. Happy self-discovery!
WHICH BRIDE ARE YOU? Did you choose the one you assumed you were—or did you surprise yourself? If you’re caught between two of the choices, you’re probably a combination. I once had a bride who had a traditional ceremony and one of the funkiest receptions I’ve ever seen, bursting with colorful modern decor and floral designs in abstract shapes. Her guests loved it! After all, what could be more fun than having a wedding that combines the best of both worlds?
MAKE IT HAPPEN Now that you have a good sense of
THE CLASSIC BRIDE: TRADITIONAL ELEGANCE
your personal style, you’re ready to
Your wedding is exactly what every little girl dreams of. The classic bride has a style that is timeless, elegant, rich, ethereal and romantic, and chooses decor that speaks to that. Opulence is a must here. I love filling the room with dripping crystals and florals hung from chandeliers, tall taper candles mixed into luxurious and overabundant floral arrangements, crystal or precious-metal containers that create a focal point for your tablescapes and candles of all sizes clustered on luxurious linens.

the event
A luminous white tent is dressed in fresh greens.
• MORE DAYTIME CEREMONIES Bryan Rafanelli of Rafanelli Events, author of A Great Party (Rizzoli New York), says he’s seeing a resurgence in popularity of daytime weddings, specifically those taking place in the morning or early afternoon. “This places focus on the ceremony, emphasizing that it’s of real importance and not just part of whole experience,” says Rafanelli. “An then there can be a more relaxed experience for the meal to follow.”
• BLENDED BRIDAL PARTIES Couples aren’t worrying about traditional “rules” for who can play which role in their bridal party any more, says Lauren Grech, CEO of LLG Events in New York City. Instead, they’re simply choosing the best person for the job, regardless of gender or relationship. For example, there have been many “man of honors,” “man’s maids,” “best women” and “grooms-women.” Even parents and grandparents can be included in a couple’s wedding party.
• BLACK TIE FORMALITY Still, some couples don’t
• SURPRISING DESTINATIONS Grech says destination
want casual or relaxed celebrations and would rather go all out, planning formal events and asking guests to dress in black tie attire, says Rafanelli, who expects to see more black tie in 2020. “Everyone looks beautiful in black tie attire,” says Rafanelli. “When you look back at photos, you see how stunningly timeless they are.”
weddings are always popular but she’s seen more requests for them in the past few months than she has in the past five years combined. “People are exploring places that weren’t typical for destination weddings in the past,” she says. “I have requests for Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Bora Bora, Bali, New Zealand and Australia… The wedding world has become so global through digital media.”
“A canopy of greenery looks lush during the day and dramatic at night.”— Benjamin Newbold, creative director, floral & events at Winston Flowers in Boston and New York City.

Today’s brides and grooms are creating celebrations that don’t follow anyone’s rules but their own: The schedule, formality, bridal party, even the location are becoming a matter of personal, sometimes out-of-the-box choice.
the decor Artistry on board: a watercolor invitation suite.
Today’s couples want to make guests feel at home, and so everything from furniture to tableware—even the flooring—is taking inspiration from interior design as brides and grooms make careful, super-stylish decor selections.
• BRINGING THE INDOORS OUT “Companies like West Elm and Restoration Hardware have inspired people to bring wood furniture and even hardwood floors outside,” says Grech. “They really want to create a living-room type of environment outdoors.”
• CREATIVE SCENERY “It’s all about making memories that last, especially with the advent of social media where photos go on to live indefinitely,” says Benjamin Newbold, creative director of floral and events at Winston Flowers. “We’re seeing a major shift to playful vignettes that add color and whimsy to the big day.” • BOLD COLORS Say goodbye to the white

and pale blush weddings of 2019. 2020 is bringing colors such as deep and hot pinks, salmon and violet. “We predict saturated blooms: brightly colored peonies and ranunculus during warm spring months and dahlias in dramatic hues come fall,” Newbold says.
A fern and floral canopy.
• FERNS AND POTTED PLANTS Grech says couples are requesting potted plants to use as decor elements, alongside traditional cut flowers. Rafanelli agrees, saying lush ferns are making a splash, both in low containers and as tall, textured centerpieces. “Cascading textures of green intricately woven throughout the ceiling of a tent complemented by hanging lanterns offer a dreamy ambience similar to that of dining under the stars,” Newbold enthuses.
• CREATIVE STATIONERY Grech says couples are leaning toward the classic with their invitation designs, but that they also might find one impactful way to make theirs unique. They are, however, getting playful with their save-the-dates, says Rafanelli, as painterly, creative motifs, such as watercolor, continue to gain in popularity.
• MIRRORS & REFLECTIONS Expect to see reflective surfaces make a big comeback in 2020. “We’ve started having mirrored tabletops and bars, and even disco balls, at weddings,” says Sarah Banasiak, chief creative officer of Revel Global Events in Chicago, Illinois. “Mirrors make a ➺

personality with patterns, says Banasiak and her team at Revel. Not only can tablecloths and curtains carry bold pattern, but dance floors can be done in a checkerboard or another motif as an anchor point in the middle of the reception room. One couple even replicated the tile pattern from their own home remodel on their dance floor.
Couples are skipping the seated meal, opting for passed mini bites instead. Serving hearty fare like mini croque monsieurs allows guests to mingle freely and still feel satiated.
food & drink
A farm-fresh bar by Wolfgang Puck Catering.
There’s no question today’s brides and grooms are putting emphasis on serving guests a meal they’ll savor and remember long after the wedding day. Fresh, local ingredients continue to take center stage at the table.
• RESTAURANT-STYLE MEALS “Couples want more of a restaurant vibe for their wedding dinner, giving guests a culinary journey,” says Bryn Dyar, Senior Wedding Producer for Limelight Catering in Chicago, Illinois. “For example, in lieu of salad, we might serve a steak tartare with potato chips, fois gras bites, and a raw fish dish like a sashimi.”
• FEAST FOR THE SENSES Couples conA flower-bedecked bar.
• INTERACTIVE FOOD AND DRINK Couples want their guests to feel involved in the process,” says Pamela Pimiento, senior catering sales manager, Wolfgang Puck Catering. She and her team have created build-your-own crepe, cobbler and salad stations. Her colleague, Emily Kraus, the company’s national beverage manager, says they’ve also taken the same approach to drinks. “The bar carts provide an opportunity for guests to get up close with the bartender and create a customized drink. The bride and groom choose one spirit and then we complement it with a variety of house-made syrups, fresh fruits and herbs, tonics, bitters and vintage ice cubes.”
Passed mini-bites.
• NEW TWISTS ON DRINK BARS Some guests want to enjoy non-alcoholic drinks, and to that end, other beverages will be getting more attention at 2020 weddings. Grech says having a fresh juice press, an infused tea bar, or a LaCroix water station are all gaining popularity. Specialty coffee bar stations with different coffee types and add-ins like chocolate, cinnamon and oat milk are a sure hit.

tinue to choose fresh, local ingredients to feature in their wedding menus, and many times, they’re having them cooked on full display for guests to see and smell, says Cheryl Stair, co-owner, Art of Eating Caterers & Event Planning in the Hamptons, New York. “Brides are after the simple, natural, ‘farmy’ menus, from hors d’oeuvres through dinner, dessert and even the after-party,” says Stair.
the guest experience
In 2020, couples will be doing everything they can to ensure guests feel welcome, engaged and valued, and that their time is important.
Strike up the band!
• THOUGHTFUL SHOT LISTS Rafanelli is seeing couples ask for group photos of the whole wedding party or even all the wedding’s guests together. “It might be on a stage or a rambling porch,” he says. “It captures this moment in time and creates a sense of community at a wedding.” Plus, it’s a meaningful keepsake for everyone who’s sharing in the day. Grech
M-m-m-merinque!
says some brides and grooms aren’t doing a long couples’ photo session on the day of the wedding and rather are getting dressed again the next day for pictures. This way, they can spend more time with guests on the big day itself.
• UNIQUE PERFORMANCES Wedding entertainment will go way beyond band and DJs in 2020. Grech says she’s recently hired exciting performers for weddings, including The Rockettes, synchronized swimmers, stilt walkers, acrobats, fire
twirlers and more, and she expects to see many more showstopping acts dazzle wedding guests this year.
• IN-HOUSE AFTER-PARTIES. Instead of moving elsewhere for an afterparty, couples are opting to keep the bash going in the same venue. To get the party started, a DJ will start playing, and the lighting will switch to a more club-like look. “Some people think if they move, they’ll lose people,” says Banasiak. “Lighting can change a room in a heartbeat.”
cakes & sweets • PAINTED BUTTERCREAM For an artistic twist on the traditional wedding cake, couples are asking for their buttercream frosting to be painted in both impressionistic and expressionistic styles, says Jay Muse, chef and partner of Lulu Cake Boutique in Scarsdale and New York City. The result is a dessert that almost looks too good to eat. Cake color trends fall into two different camps, with daring hues like red on call to complement like-minded vibrant wedding-color palettes, and quieter shades taking their place at receptions featuring softer shades. Muted shades like mauve, taupe and grey are emerging in popularity. Sage green is becoming more popular, too, says Muse, who notes that these hues echo the burgeoning popularity of greyish greens as seen in eucalyptus and lamb’s ear. • ASYMMETRICAL STACKS Instead of centering each cake tier, more couples are asking for theirs to be stacked, all to one side. “This gives a cake a very modern feel but also can lend itself to a more organic look,” Muse says. For example, the asymmetrical placement can create one tall wall on one side of the cake, for sugar flowers and vines to trail down, or another dramatic detail to be placed.
PHOTOGRAPHY: (FROM TOP) BRETT MATTHEWS PHOTOGRAPHY; SARA GOSS PHOTOGRAPHY; @SWEETBLOOMCAKES
• WIDE SELECTION Dessert tables full of different options are being offered, with special attention given to gluten-free options and sweets that are both gluten- and dairy-free, says Kristin Collins, founder and owner of Fluff Meringues & More, a bakery in Austin, Texas. So instead of one dessert for all guests, Collins says couples are placing greater emphasis on variety, not only to satisfy different tastes but also various dietary restrictions.
Sweet Bloom’s red naked cake.
• DESSERT BARS Collins is getting many requests for Fluff Meringue’s signature pavlova bar. Guests are provided with a meringue shell and can fill it with a pastry cream or mousse of their choice and top it with fruit, nuts and decadent drizzles. “The setup is gorgeous and making the desserts is a fun way for guests to interact.” ¢
Muse is using local ingredients to create cakes with farm-to-table flavors, including bourbon caramel, lavenderinfused ganache, and a richly spiced honey cake. The results are both delectible and a sweet nod to the wedding’s locale.
planning notebook
BIG DAY YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER First, make sure you are comfortable with your photographer, keeping in mind that they will effectively be directing you and your wedding party from one photo op to another. Have very specific timelines set up along with your shot list so there’s a clear understating of how long your pictures are going to take. Huge question: If they have not been there before, are they going to go scout the venue? What pictures do you definitely want? Go and scout the venue together. Make sure this is on the table before you book. YOUR VIDEOGRAPHER What’s popular now are trailers—short films that last anywhere from five to 10 minutes. Rather than documenting the day, these are meant to capture people in the moment. As with your photographer, make sure you’re comfortable with the cameraperson as well as with their gear. Take a look at the type of equipment they use. Is it heavy duty (which could feel invasive) or compact and lightweight? YOUR FLORIST A lot of florists do so much more than just flowers. Some are full stagers. They handle the draperies, the bunting, and other key decor elements. Do make sure if they are handling decor, that they’ll be handling the setting up and the taking down. Find out what the process entails and make sure you understand the costs. Some florists include it and others charge extra.

have a wedding cake.” Here’s the problem. The cake cutting is symbolic. It’s either the reception kickoff so guests know it’s time to dance or the end point, signaling dessert time. GET THE WEDDING YOU WANT! ASK YOUR VENDORS THESE KEY QUESTIONS AS YOU START PLANNING THE BIG DAY. BY DEBRA WITT

Y
ou know you need a great venue, cake designer, florist, caterer, DJ and photographer. But other than help you pull off the wedding of your dreams, do you really know what you need each of them to do? Maybe if you’re an event planner by trade, but probably not if you’re like the rest of us. The fact is you’re not only taking on the role of brideto-be, you’ve just become the operations manager of what will essentially become a small village for a day. Exciting, yes. But also more than a little overwhelming. Take a deep breath, we’ve done the initial hard work for you. We asked a few of our favorite wedding designers to share the top questions every bride should be asking each of her vendors before signing the dotted line.
What to ask your site manager “So many points about your event begin and end with the space or location you choose,” says Amy Cagginello, owner of Amy Champagne Events in Milford, Connecticut. “It’s key to know exactly what to expect from your venue.” • How many people can you accommodate and how long will I have use of the event space?
• What are the per-person charges? And are there additional service charges or other fees such as gratuities or overtime costs?
• Do prices differ based on the time of day and/or day of the week? What is your payment and cancellation policy?
• What time can my vendors arrive to set up/clean up? Can any rentals or
What to ask your florist “The flowers are often the first thing your guests will notice,” says Shawn Rabideau, of Shawn Rabideau Events & Design in New York City (who began his wedding career as a florist). “What florists do impacts the entire look of your event, not to mention your budget.”
decor be dropped off the day before and picked up the day after?
• Are tables, linens, etc. provided or will I need to rent them elsewhere? • Am I able to use an outside caterer and/or cake maker? Is there an extra cost to do so?
• Do you have a signature design style? Will you be doing the arrangements yourself or using another floral designer?
• Do you offer specific arrangements or can centerpieces, bouquets, etc. be customized?
• What bloom recommendations can you suggest that fit within my budget and my theme/ color story? What flowers will be in season for my wedding?
• Have you done any weddings at my venue? • What can you suggest to help me get the most from my budget?
• And are there extra fees for containers or other vessels?
• Is there a price difference between similar blooms? (Ideally you should see an itemized price list of flowers under consideration.)

• Can you provide other decor, such as trees,
THE FIRST QUESTION YOU’LL WANT TO ASK ANY VENDOR IS WHETHER OR NOT THEY'RE AVAILABLE ON YOUR DATE, BUT THAT'S NOT THE ONLY ESSENTIAL INFO YOU'LL BE GATHERING.
• Can we bring in our own wine, beer, champagne or other alcohol? Is there a corkage fee?

Will you pick up any vases, etc. after the ceremony, or is that my responsibility?
• How do you meet the technical needs of other vendors, such as a DJ, caterer or videographer? (Is there an on-site technician, for example.) ➺
What to ask your caterer If the caterer’s food tastes great you’re done, right? Not quite, says Napa, California–based event designer Sasha Souza. It’s not enough that they can prepare delicious meals, she says—they also have to be able to handle the size and scope of your event and have fantastic service. • What foods do you specialize in? Do you have set menu options or can you create a custom or themed menu? • What would you recommend given my budget, guest count and event theme? • How do you handle tastings? (Ideally each dish should be presented as your guests will see them, and you and your groom shouldn’t have to take a bite from the same serving.) • What’s the price difference between a buffet and a sit-down meal, and between passed appetizers and appetizer stations? How are your fees broken down? • Do you provide linens, utensils, serving table decor, etc.? How about tables and chairs? What colors and
styles do you offer? • Will you be overseeing the meal service at the reception, or do you have an on-site manager to coordinate these things? (If the caterer won’t be present, it’s always a good idea to ask to meet whomever will be in charge of your day ahead of time.) • Is there a cut-off date for making menu changes? • Are you licensed to serve alcohol? (If not you may need to hire a separate bar service.) • How much do you charge for vendor meals? (Musicians and photographers get hungry, too!) Can leftovers be wrapped for guests or donated? • What’s the ratio of servers to guests? How will servers be dressed?
What to ask your cakemaker
• What are your specialties
• What icing options do you
and/or top flavors and fillings? Can you do gluten-free, organic, or vegan cakes? • Can I view examples of cakes you’ve baked and decorated? (Many newer cake makers may have photos in their portfolios of cakes they assisted on, but you want to see what they’ve done themselvesfrom start to finish.) • Do you work with set designs or can you design a custom cake to match my theme? • Can you outline your pricing fees? For example, do you charge for a cake tasting, are there additional fees for cake stands, cutting knives, toppers, etc.? • Will you work with a recipe I’ve provided? If so, will there be an additional cost?
recommend for the cake style I’m looking for? • If I want fresh flowers on my cake will you collaborate with my florist to include blooms that coordinate with my floral decor? • How far in advance is the cake actually made? How is it stored and transported? • Will you preserve the top tier of my wedding cake for my first anniversary?
FOR OUTDOOR SPACES • How will my cake hold up to the elements? An unprotected table won’t be able to shield your wedding cake from stiff ocean breezes, high temps or humidity. You’ll want to know how your baker handles outdoor venues.
ALWAYS ASK VENDORS, “WHAT'S YOUR BACKUP PLAN SHOULD YOU FALL ILL OR OTHERWISE NOT BE AVAILABLE?” AS TO THE VENUE ITSELF: “WHAT'S PLAN B IF THE WEATHER TAKES A BAD TURN?”
PHOTOGRAPHY: PHOTOGRAPHYBYPAULINA.COM
“You want a ‘wow’ factor here!” says Rabideau. “And that can happen if you’re clear with your cake designer about your wishes, and listen to their ideas, too.” Taste and presentation are only part of the equation. You also need to know if they can handle the specifics of your wedding.
KEY QUESTIONS THAT APPLY TO EVERY VENDOR Put these six important questions at the top of your list.
1
How long have you been in business and how many weddings do you do each year?
2
Can you share recent references and examples of your work? (In the case of your venue, be sure to ask to see recent pictures of weddings in the space you’re considering.)
3
Do you have liability insurance? (If not, you’ll very likely want to take out your own policy to cover unexpected mishaps such as a guest tripping over the photographer's tripod and getting hurt, or to repair or replace rented linens that were scorched by the votives in your floral centerpiece.)
4 5
What’s your payment structure and cancellation policy?
What’s your backup plan should you fall ill or otherwise not be available at the time of the wedding? In the case of the venue site, what’s their plan if the weather takes a bad turn or another unforeseeable circumstance occurs?
6
What are your travel and/or overtime fees? (Unexpected travel fees may crop up if your ceremony and reception are in different locations or if you’re hiring out-of-town vendors.)
What to ask your photographer & videographer The images of your special day are so important, “yet many couples only focus on the pricing, or base their choice on portfolio alone,” says Cagginello. But there are many more details to focus on. • Do you specialize in weddings? (You don’t need a weddings-only shooter, but you do want someone who’s comfortable with both the ceremony and the reception.) • How would you describe your photography style? And can I see a portfolio of your work— beyond what’s featured on your website? • How/when do we go about creating a shot list? What information do you need from me before the event? • What is your working style on the day of the wedding? And how many shooters will cover the day? • How much time do you need to set up? And for how long will you shoot? • What type of equipment do you use? Do you have backup equipment on hand? • What’s the length of time for delivery of proofs? And what is the ordering process? • Can you provide me with a detailed price sheet? What do packages include? • Do you have a minimum number of hours? Will you stay if my event is running
FOR VIDEOGRAPHERS • How long is your editing process? • Is there a cost for a video “tease”? (This is typically a one-minute video short to share on social media.)
What to ask your musicians or dj “DJs and musicians set the tempo for your party,” says Rabideau. “You want to make sure you find the right professionals who can keep your guests entertained.” • What genres can you cover? Do you

late and what are your overtime fees? • Will my wedding be your only job on that day? If not, what are the hours I can count on and what happens if you can’t make it to my wedding?
have any particular specialties? • Do you have a DVD from a previous wedding you performed at that I can view? And where can we see you perform live? • Can my fiancé and I give you “doplay” and “no-play” lists? • Do you have ideas to encourage more guests to dance? (For example, are they willing and able to deviate from their set list to try and energize the crowd?) What’s your game plan if you notice guests aren’t dancing? • Do you provide the sound equipment or does it have to be rented elsewhere? And do you have backup
equipment should something go wrong? • Do you have a technician who stays on site if there’s a problem? (This is especially important if you have an outside event, or are booking a venue that doesn’t typically handle weddings.) • Do you provide any lighting design? What kind of space/staging requirements do you have? • Does your pricing include set-up and breakdown? How much time do you need for set-up, breaks, breakdown? • How many breaks do you need and for how long? Will you play recorded music during breaks? • What will you be wearing—can I make specific attire requests?
IMPRESS FOR LESS PROS REVEAL CLEVER MONEY-SAVING STRATEGIES FOR EVERY ELEMENT OF YOUR WEDDING.
Elegant options abound but costs vary significantly, so take this expert advice into account before you start scouting locations.
T
GETTING MORE FOR YOUR MONEY he venues that offer the best value are dedicated event spaces, like hotels and banquet halls (generally speaking, sites with prescribed wedding packages). This is because many services you would otherwise need to hire come included, and bundling them together makes your dollar go farther. When shopping around for a venue, “the number one thing is to make sure you’re comparing apples to apples,” says planner Claudia Hanlin of The Wedding Library in New York City. “Bringing-in always costs more because you have pick-up and delivery charges for every single thing.” Many brides make the mistake of thinking an outdoor wedding at a family member’s home will result in a big savings. There’s no site fee, but the cost of transforming a backyard into a full-service reception space (tents, lighting, dance floor, portable toilets) can exceed even the most lavish pre-set wedding package.
PAYING LESS FOR PLACES Another way to save, says Hanlin, is by holding your ceremony, cocktail hour and reception in the same venue—such as a church or synagogue with an attached hall, or a restaurant with multiple party rooms. The cost of a few extra hours on property is considerably less than renting an entirely separate space, and you won’t have to pay to transport guests between locales. Religious and charitable organizations tend to rent for nominal fees, as do government-run sites like cultural institutions and state parks. Plus, what you do pay to rent these places benefits the community. Parks, in particular, can be great bargains, considering they often include scenic backdrops. Naturally picturesque outdoor locales—a stand of towering redwoods, for example—don’t need much adornment, which reduces your decor budget. The key is working with what you’ve got: “In California there are a lot of missions that rent for very little,” says Sasha Souza, the Napa-based event designer, “and they often already have benches in place so you save on furnishings.” Similarly, if your site features a stone patio, consider using that as the dance floor rather than renting one.
INSIDER TIP
At first glance, the fee for renting an empty loft may seem like a steal compared to a ballroom. But as soon as you factor in all the vendors (caterer, servers, bartenders) and rentals (tables, chairs, china, glassware, linens), you’ll see the price tag go way, way up.

stationery There's so much info to share with your guests before and on your big day. But all those printed pieces can add up fast. Here’s how to get pretty paperie without paying a pretty penny.
A
COMPARING PRINT PRICES significant factor in stationery costs is your choice of printing method. At the most expensive end are engraving and letterpress techniques, where the script is artfully raised off the page. If you like this formal feel but don’t want to pay top dollar, consider thermography—it’s much less costly. Offset printing comes next on the price scale, while digital printing is very economical—especially if you’re incorporating multiple colors. Because offset and digital printing
are cheaper to produce, stationers recommend using them for all your day-of needs, like ceremony programs, escort or place cards and menus. “These pieces are often left behind,” says Karen Bartolomei, founder of Grapevine Paperie in Boston and NYC. “Splurge on items that will be mailed to your guests’ homes.”
SAVING BY CONSOLIDATING The more elements there are in a wedding invitation, the higher the price. One insert that’s easy to eliminate is the reception card. “If you’re getting married in a church and having your reception at a loft, print ‘Dinner and dancing to follow at Tribeca Rooftop’ on the invite itself,” says Cheree Berry of Cheree Berry Paper in St. Louis, MO. Rather than printing and sending out guest logistics in early mailings, stationers now recommend putting travel and
lodging details on your wedding website. Day-of items can be scaled back, too. Rather than calligraphed escort cards, print names and table assignments in a nice font on fine paper and display them in frames, or write them on a chalkboard.

music conservatories. “In some areas, you can book an excellent jazz group or classical trio from a community theater or symphony for a donation or nominal fee,” Jones says, and music students may charge even less. For reception music leads, explore your city’s nightlife scene. A group that performs in local bars or clubs tends to be more cost-effective than a traditional wedding band. As with venues, you may get a bargain rate by holding your wedding on a weekday or a weekend in slow season. Saturday events incur the most competition for services, so they yield the highest price tags.
PAYING LESS FOR LIVE ACTS
THINKING OUTSIDE THE BAND
usicians are almost always more expensive than DJs, so hiring instrumentalists to perform at your ceremony and cocktail hour, plus a band as the main act, will cost top dollar. But cash-strapped couples don’t necessarily have to forfeit live entertainment. If you’re having a religious service, check your venue contract before booking anyone, says Deanna Jones, of NYC’s The Deanna Jones Orchestra. “Often you are already paying for a musician at your church or synagogue and just don’t know it.” If that’s not the case, look into nearby civic organizations and
DJs typically cost less than bands, and some couples prefer them because of the greater variety of songs they can play. Although smartphones and services like Spotify let individuals create a playlist and “spin” their own tunes, DJs double as emcees—introducing the bridal party and announcing special dances and toasts. They also provide speakers, which you may have to otherwise rent. Lastly, don’t overlook talented friends and family members. Asking your choir-star cousin to sing a hymn at your service or some college buddies in a cover band to play your first dance track adds the excitement of a live performance for free. ➺
fine side. And if you must have a fancy food like lobster on your menu, you can cut costs by offering a small portion as an appetizer rather than an entrée.
NIXING EXCESS EXPENSES
Refreshments are an important part of every party, but feeding all your friends and family can eat up a good chunk of your wedding change. Here’s how to get more bite for your buck.
Y
PLANNING FRUGAL FARE ou can reduce almost every wedding expense by editing your guest list, but nowhere does that tactic have more impact than in catering costs. Think about it: Food and drink may run hundreds of dollars per head, meaning that 10 or 20 fewer chairs will result in significant savings. If you can’t get your guest head count down, a buffet may come in as a budget-friendly option because you don’t have to pay for waiters. If you go this route, however, it’s important to serve less expensive fare that can be easily prepared in bulk. If you prefer sit-down service, request that guests make their dinner choices in advance. “Taking an order at the table means the kitchen has to have eighty percent of every option available, which costs a lot more,” says Seattle-based caterer Lisa Dupar. She recommends including an entrée selection line or insert with your invitations so the chef can plan ahead. Also, giving guests fewer choices to begin with (filet mignon or wild mushroom risotto, for example, instead of a meat, fish and vegetarian dish), or the same sides with each alternative, is less work for the cooks. Barely noticeable omissions or substitutions can have a profound effect on your final bill, too, says Brian Kiefer, a senior sales consultant at the Chicago-based caterer Food for Thought. “If you’re serving a beautiful salad with seasonal veggies and simply leave off the cheese, you’ll save one dollar per person,” he says. Whipped potatoes cost less than fingerlings but make an equally

CHOOSING THE BLOOMS lowers can be as dramatically different in price as they are in appearance. The best way to get more for your money is by selecting seasonal blooms that can be purchased locally rather than shipped in. As soon as you set your date and location, ask your florist to suggest flowers that will be available in that place and time of year. You can also save by using a less expensive flower en masse. It makes a striking statement but requires less effort for your florist than arranging multiple blooms, says Hanlin. Alternatively, by using cheaper blooms like carnations at the base of your arrangements, you can get away with fewer, more prominently placed pricey blossoms. catering
If your catering budget is tight, don’t fall into the common trap of overestimating how much your guests will consume. Do you really need assorted passed hors d’oeuvres, a made-to-order sushi station and a mammoth crudité platter at your cocktail hour? “Pick one hearty, filling display—like a local artisan cheese table with fruits, breads and crackers—and have that be it!” says Dupar. Another way to cut back is by shortening the event. “Costs are driven by length of time, so stick to an hour or less for cocktails,” says Kiefer—noting that, on average, people consume one canapé every ten minutes—and consider trimming an hour off the reception. For even deeper savings, skip the full-on dinner altogether, and opt for a brunch, afternoon tea and dessert, or latenight cocktail reception. If you stay flexible and open to creative new ideas, you’ll find lots of innovative approaches to throwing a great party that will also save money.

pensive greenery, like ferns and ivy. “Any kind of leafy filler adds a lush, organic touch and volume, so arrangements don’t appear skimpy,” she says. For ceremony decor, Souza counsels couples marrying in a large church to skip the flowers because they’ll be overwhelmed by the space; just place wreaths on the entry doors.
Souza loves using hardy perennials like succulents and chicksand-hens plants in reception displays instead of fussy, fragile blooms; they aren’t pricey and can be replanted and enjoyed long after the event. Branches, topiaries and tree-trunk slices make great nonfloral centerpiece elements, too, while embellishing tablescapes with fruits and vegetables adds texture for far less than a flowers-only arrangement. Purchasing decorative items like candelabra or vintage vessels is often cheaper than renting them, says Hanlin, and you can always sell them after the wedding. If your floral budget is really limited, stick to adorning the center of the room (no one will notice if the perimeter is a bit sparse) and find other ways to spruce up the tables and chairs. Many venues offer basic linens in an array of shades besides white, and a profusion of one color looks purposeful rather than penny-pinching. Similarly, standard ballroom seats can be dressed up by tying ribbon or narrow lengths of lace into bows and placing them on the chair backs.

A decadent confection makes a fitting grand finale, but that fancy finish may not come cheap. Here’s how to sweeten your deal and score a cost-conscious cake.
S
IMPRESSING FOR LESS ome brides are surprised to learn how expensive wedding cakes run. But they have to look as good as they taste, and that takes effort. “The cake is a dessert, but it also plays a decorative role in the reception—similar to the flowers,” says pastry chef Cheryl Kleinman of Betty Bakery in Brooklyn, NY. When a couple’s eyes are bigger than their budget, a baker might suggest preparing a “fake” cake, made of iced tiers of cardboard or foam except for the tier that’s sliced during the cake-cutting ceremony. The guests are then served pieces of an inexpensive cake that’s cut in the kitchen. Alternatively, you can have a diminutive but dramatic cake that serves 35
presented on a pedestal stand on the escort card table; this way guests notice it when getting their seat assignments but later eat slices of an unseen sheet cake.
SCALING BACK ON SUGAR Although cakes are priced by the slice, it’s not likely that every single person will indulge—so you can usually get away with ordering a confection that feeds just 75 percent of attendees. Square cakes yield more slices than round ones, and rich flavors like chocolate make people feel full faster, meaning you can order less and cut thinner slices. To further cut costs, have your cake divided into very small pieces to be passed on trays during the dancing; this way, you may only need to budget for 25
percent of the guest count. Finally, while it’s fun to work with a pastry chef, it isn’t absolutely necessary. If your venue has an in-house caterer, consider booking their baker to save on delivery fees. And consider offering a number of single-layer cakes in a variety of flavors displayed on a collection of pretty cake stands.
YOUR MONEY
NO PLACE LIKE... …a home of one’s own. Susan Pryor offers pro advice on every couple’s most important purchase.
It’s the ultimate dream: a home of one’s own. But where to start? Here, some basics for you and your partner to keep in mind.
ARE YOU READY? Buying a home can make sense if you plan to stay in the same geographic area for a minimum of three to five years. Interest rates are still relatively low and prices remain reasonable in most markets. Owning a home allows you to put down roots in your community, to feel more grounded and connected with your surroundings— and to build your net worth. But be aware of the never-ending expenses associated with owning a home, such as property upkeep and repairs when necessary (plumber, electrician, etc.).
WHAT ARE THE FIRST STEPS? Before you begin to look at homes, determine what you’ll be able to afford. A general rule of thumb is to ensure that your mortgage payment will be less than one-third of your gross monthly income. For example, if your combined annual salary is $60,000, you would want your total monthly payment (not just principal and interest but also insurance and real-estate taxes) to be less than $1,600. A strong credit score is also essential. Beyond this formula, a loan officer can help walk you through the process, informing you of any additional costs and fees (such as attorney and appraisal fees).
financial tool. Over time, you can expect your home’s value to appreciate, or increase, around three percent annually. Let’s say you put 10 percent down on a $200,000 home ($20,000). After one year, a three-percent increase would yield a $6,000 gain, growing your initial investment of $20,000 to $26,000. If you sell the home after a few years, that investment may have grown even more. However, recent years have taught us that even real estate is not guaranteed to increase every year, though financial experts generally agree that real estate is a great investment right now. As well, the interest and taxes you pay on your home are deductible if you file an itemized tax return—which is always a good thing!
WHAT OTHER ISSUES SHOULD WE CONSIDER?
It is essential to know whether you can handle the responsibilities of home ownership as you begin your lives together. Some newlyweds have only lived in their parents’ homes or leased properties, such as apartments or rented homes. In those setPRE-QUALIFICATION VS. tings, the responsibilities of maintenance PRE-APPROVAL often belong to someone else, perhaps With pre-qualification, the lender will verDad or your property manager. HAIR DAMAGE 101 Let’s get to the root of your mane issues. Overwashing, chemical treatments and heat from styling tools are the common causes for damaged hair, according to Luisa Taddeo, Schwarzkopf Keratin Color Brand Expert. “The sebaceous glands on your scalp secrete sebum, an oily, waxy substance that keeps your hair and scalp moisturized,” explains Taddeo. Overcleansing hair repeatedly strips your scalp of its natural hydrating agents. Hair bleaching and texture treatments involve harsh chemicals that erode hair cuticles, the outer layer of each strand that seals in moisture. As for hot tools, Taddeo says that heat from blow dryers and flatirons result in parched hair fibers—which live deep within each hair cuticle—leaving locks brittle. Among these causes, the common indicator of damaged hair is dryness, which leads to split ends, breakage and frizz.

PROTECT & TREAT Hairstylist Jennifer Yepez recommends saying “I do” to a healthy hair regimen at least a year before walking down the aisle. Comb through these tips and products to include in your pre-wedding routine based on your hair damage type.
PHOTOGRAPHY: TERRY DOYLE
OVERWASHING: Kérastase consulting stylist Glen Oropeza’s philosophy is simple: Less is more. He explains, “It’s always a good idea to give your hair a break, especially if you’re trying to achieve healthy wedding-day hair.” Oropoza recommends cleansing hair every other day or every two days to promote a balanced scalp. As for what to wash with, Yepez explains that “everyone’s hair is different, so it’s important to find products most prescriptive for your hair.” Those with dull, thirsty strands should opt for nutrient-rich formulas like Briogeo Be Gentle, Be Kind Matcha + Apple Replenish Superfood Shampoo and Conditioner. This clean combo is paraben- and sulfate-free (both are culprits in stripping moisture from your scalp). Each bottle packs essential revitalizing fatty acids and nourishing minerals that act as a wellness shot for your locks. The result? A well-balanced scalp plus smooth, fortified hair that gleams with health.

once a week and leaving it in overnight to penetrate strands. Wash out the next morning to see and feel a difference. Oribe Supershine Moisturizing Cream is another hair saver for chemically damaged locks. This luxe leave-in conditioner helps hair retain moisture while supplying UV protection that veils strands from harmful, color-fading rays.
THERMAL ABUSE: Aside from air-drying strands or wearing your natural texture, hair towels and heat protectants are your best defense against thermal damage. Gently blot wet hair with Aquis Lisse Luxe Hair Towel. This soft, polyester fabric cuts down drying time by 50 percent as well as minimizing frizz and breakage. Apply a creamy protective formula like Kérastase Résistance Extentioniste Thermique Blow Dry Primer, which is said to strengthen and protect strands from up to 450 degrees of heat. Opt for hot tools that are crafted to dry and style hair efficiently without using excessive heat like Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer and the Beachwaver S1.25. No matter the hair tool, Oropeza suggests adjusting its settings to lower temps, especially for those with thin or fine hair.
MAINTAIN & GROW Daily supplements and regular hair cuts are great options for brides vowing to up their already strong hair game before the big day. Hum Nutrition Hair Sweet Hair Gummies are the ultimate treat for you and your hair: they taste like candy and are loaded with folic acid, biotin and zinc to strengthen and grow strands from within. In addition to supplements, Yepez recommends trimming hair every two to three months leading up to your wedding, and using the phrase “light dusting” at the salon if you’re keen on maintaining length.

STYLE TIPS Briogeo Be Gentle, Be Kind Matcha + Apple Replenish Superfood Shampoo & Conditioner; briogeohair.com
CHEMICAL CULPRITS: Hitting pause on any color or texture treatment is the first step in mending overprocessed hair. This is the time to use an at-home treatment like Olaplex Hair Perfector No. 3, which structurally rebuilds hair from within. Celebrity hair extension pro Priscilla Valles suggests applying the reparative formula to dry hair Moroccanoil Mending Infusion; moroccanoil.com
“Sleek styles are my go-to for camouflaging dry, damaged hair because I can use a lot of moisturizing products to condition the hair while styling it to look chic and polished,” says Oropeza. Apply Moroccanoil Mending Infusion Oil along ends to lock in moisture and give the appearance of freshly cut hair. Sarah Potempa, celebrity hair stylist and creator of The Beachwaver Co., uses beach-y braids to disguise weak locks as well as root touch-up powder on her celebrity clients “to get a clean hairline or fill in any spots in a braid to ensure a picture-perfect look!” ■

1. Wooden cabin-themed decor dotted the ceremony and reception sites, playing up a rustic feel. 2. Anemone blooms were the stars of the floral arrangements, highlighting the black-and-white color scheme. 3. The couple chose their venue for its sparkling natural beauty. 4. Choosing to forgo a traditional wedding party, the grooms selected a handful of close girlfriends and sisters-inlaw to be their bridesmaids.

et against the natural beauty of the Adirondack Mountains and surrounded by loved ones, Sean asked Tory to be his husband. During the ensuing two-year engagement, the pair searched for the perfect venue, ultimately choosing to hold their weekend wedding at the Whiteface Lodge, an iconic woodland resort nestled on the shores of Lake Placid. “We love the Adirondack region so much, it seemed fitting that this is where we would get married,” the couple said. The grounds of the lodge were dressed in florals and classic Adirondack furnishings, with flower petals strewn along an aisle that led to an arch at the edge of the shimmering lake. Following their “I dos,” the couple set sail on the water, as guests were treated to sips and small bites, s’mores, cigars and a whiskey bar. A threecourse dinner—featuring goat-cheese salad, truffle ravioli and Maine lobster—followed, after which the newlyweds and their guests danced the night away, capping off what Tory and Sean say was “the happiest weekend of our lives.”— Anna Smutny Wedding Planner: KC You There Florist: Bows + Arrows Catering: Whiteface Lodge Desserts: B Sweet Designs 000

1. The lodge offered pictureperfect panoramic views of Lake Placid. 2. As a sentimental touch, Tory crafted notebooks to gift to guests as a nod to his father, an avid kayaker who often used pocket journals while out on the water. 3. Camp-inspired goody bags were loaded with treats for the guests: Ladurée custom macarons, candles, popcorn, personalized patches and more. 4. Rustic signage pointed the way to a variety of activities. 5. Simple arrangements of white florals and greenery accented the tables in the cocktail area. 6. In place of escort cards, Sean designed a large canvas seating chart 1 with each guest’s name listed under a table number. 1 2

Favorite Moments • Immediately following their ceremony, Tory and Sean boarded a boat and sailed around the lake for their first moments as a married couple. • Seconds into saying their vows, Sean said “I do,” unable to wait a moment longer, giving both the guests and Tory a laugh. • Upon arriving at the ceremony site, Tory and Sean's breaths were taken away by how beautifully it had been redesigned. Their vision for the big day had come to life and it was exactly how they had pictured it.

Personal Touches • Sean designed the logo used for the wedding. An interlocking of T and S, as well as “916” to symbolize their wedding date. • Enamel coffee mugs, a nod to the camping lifestyle, were also designed by Sean and given to guests as a pre-invite for the couple’s wedding weekend. 2 1. The bridesmaids wore a variety of white dress styles. 2. The flatware chosen was the jumping-off point for the color scheme for the big day: black, ivory and touches of gold. 3. Keeping the centerpieces in line with the rest of the floral arrangements, the couple strived for place settings that felt a little bit more formal. Golden chargers, glittering black water goblets and crystal wine glasses added a touch of drama.

Tory and Sean’s wedding-day logo was piped in icing on the dessert cookies. 4. All smiles, the couple poses lakeside, hand-in-hand, following their nuptials.

ALMANAC BARCELONA
A relative newcomer to this Spanish city where the avant-garde— architecture, art and cuisine—is a hallmark, this hotel is centrally located and awash in a mod vibe. Best described as sleek and shiny, the property’s 91 guest rooms and suites are superbly high tech and at the same time sumptuous, thanks to bespoke-crafted beds. Most have awesome views of Barcelona and its Eixample neightborhood. The best vantage point, however, is Azimuth, an eatery and bar enclosed in a glass cube with an adjacent outdoor lounge and pool, positioned on the expansive roof (room rates start at about $700 a night and include breakfast; almanachotels.com).
Belmond Charleston Place
Charming Charleston.
This 434-room property is like the city itself—charming, classic and comforting. Guests can repose in all manner of public spaces and be spoiled by the impeccable service for which the global Belmond brand is known. There’s the opulent lobby with its dramatic staircase and stunning chandeliers. The Palmetto cafe, set on the hotel’s patio, and the leather-and-library-esque Thoroughbred Club are other favorites, as is the Clocktower Terrace, a poolside outpost that overlooks Charleston’s historic King Street. Cocktails promise to refresh you from the Southern heat while light bites fuel you up for a shopping session at the neighboring boutiques (room rates start at $325 a night; belmond.com).

SOFITEL ROME VILLA BORGHESE With its meandering paths, expansive green space and access to signature sites, Villa Borghese Park is a true treasure in an international capital where every point of interest is an important historical gem. And you can appreciate it all from above at this posh retreat’s Settim Rooftop Lounge and Restaurant. Views from this chic perch stretch across the Eternal City to include St. Peter’s Basilica. Food menus here are as classic as the vista and the hotel itself with Roman culinary traditions at the forefront (room rates start at about $412 a night and include breakfast; softitel.accorhotels.com).

Bright lights, big city views in Brooklyn.
A few years ago this Brit-favored hotel chainlet set up shop in the neighborhood that arguably put Brooklyn on the map as the arbiter of hip. And this property, with its farm-to-table eateries, bespoke branded coffee roast and custom linens designed by Brooklyn artist Dusen Dusen, all housed in a former factory, embodies all the cool of Williamsburg and the attention to detail that’s decidedly Hoxton. One such marquee amenity is Summerly, a rooftop bar and seafood restaurant that boasts unbeatable views of the city that never sleeps. Open seasonally, the outpost excels at cool cocktails— the cucumber mojito and watermelon Collins are favorites (room rates start at $159 a night; thehoxton.com).

TIP:
Butlers are also on staff at many upscale hotels. Their responsibilities can include everything from crafting specialized itineraries to unpacking your luggage.
Marshmologist at the latter and you’ll learn all about the history of the ingredients. At Paw’s Up, there are sing-alongs and friendly s’mores competitions using locally sourced goodies.
JAM CONCIERGE The boutique hideaway The Lowell on Manhattan’s tony Upper East Side offers an awesome high tea service and exquisite breakfast presentations featuring the bespoke organic jams, marmalades and spreads from this discerning flavor-blending crafter. BATH BUTLER Sipping some bubbly while immersed in bubbles is a romantic vacation must-do for honeymooners. Many bath butlers offer menus for scents and oils to be used in your relaxing soak. Often, the ritual is accompanied by chilled champagne and a scattering of rose petals. Look for bath butlers at the traditional Chanler in Newport and Manhattan’s mod Hotel Gansevoort.
FARMCIERGE Tour the spectacular and sustainable farms of Puerto Rico’s stately Royal Isabella with their farming expert. Guided excursions showcase detailed explanations of the qualities and uses of native plants including yuka and guavana. Then it’s time to gather the farm-fresh goodies for a cooking class. At Grand Lakes Orlando, guests can learn about and try their hands at sustainable farming at the nearby Whisper Creek Farm. Gathering, cooking, eating and trying out the house-made beer with the on-site brew master can also be part of the experience.
AT YOUR SERVICE
T
he concierge—it’s not a new concept. Some say “the keeper of candles” (the English translation of the original French word) was a medieval servant responsible for the comfort of palace and estate guests. Others note that the modern hotel concierge was most likely developed in Switzerland before becoming a bona fide formalized hospitality position in 1929 in Paris. Since then, all manner of hotels have employed concierges, an elite staff member trained in the art of personalized service (arranging spa appointments, helping with transportation requests). For generations, concierges have also been the go-tos for the best excursion info, scoring reservations at the hottest restaurant and getting guests access to cool events. But in recent years, with the proliferation of booking apps, the concierge hasn’t been as necessary. Enter the specialized concierge. High-end resorts and hotels across the globe are showcasing hyper-personalized, uber-specific experiences curated by—you guessed it—hyper-specialized, uber-specific experts. The result for you is more attention, more detail and more authentic experiences. Here are some of our favorite new kinds of concierges and where to find them.

RUNNING CONCIERGE More than 200 people across the Westin hotel brand wear this nametag. They lead group runs, map out individual loops based on level and interest and dole out any gear that you may need. The Gear Lending program includes sneakers from New Balance, clothing and water bottles. The hotel brand also has a partnership with FitBit. COFFEE CONCIERGE Depending on the property, a coffee expert may bring you a cup of Joe, brew one in your room or perform a pour-over ritual in the comfort of your suite. At Nayara Springs in Costa Rica, the resident Fine Coffee Consultant helps guests create their own blends, and also leads cupping (coffee flight tasting) experiences. ROMANCE CONCIERGE Unlike the other offerings mentioned, resorts have been providing services that organize all sorts of lovey-dovey experiences for at least a decade. Depending on the property, romance concierges can do everything from craft proposals and assist with wedding and honeymoon planning to drawing bubble baths and scattering rose petals. Directors of romance are on staff at Sandals Resorts, Las Ventanas al Paríso, A Rosewood Resort in Los Cabos and The RitzCarlton hotels throughout the world, among others. ¢

ust because it’s your Big Day doesn’t mean it needs to be, well, big. Many couples are opting for more intimate celebrations. In fact, elopements are on the rise—a 2018 OnePoll survey commissioned by pre-owned dress marketplace StillWhite.com found 60 percent of couples now seriously consider throwing I dos for two (or a few guests) in hopes of saving money, avoiding planning stress or family drama or having a just-the-few-of-us toasts. THE COSMOPOLITAN OF LAS VEGAS Pairs have run off to Vegas for quickie marriages for decades. Sure, Elvis impersonators and pirate-ship venues are still available, but this upscale Strip staple offers a sophisticated alternative where petite parties are held in the privacy of their complimentarily upgraded room. Celebrations at this chic resort include personal flowers, a cake for two and a bubbles toast, plus an hour of professional photography with an escort to guide newlyweds to the best picture spots around the complex. Select a wraparound terrace suite to add fresh air and the city’s famed skyline as a backdrop. The separate bedroom comes in handy for storage and prep should you invite the allotted max of 10 guests. Get dolled up at the on-property spa/salon. CONRAD, WASHINGTON, D.C. Centrally located, visually stunning and offering an extremely high level of hospitality, the year-old luxury property can certainly be seen by betrotheds as a capitol gain. This is no doubt thanks to the variety of Instagrammable vignettes (dramatically curved, lighted staircase, wall mural made from broken blue-willow pottery, the adjacent urban park) and small-gathering friendly venues found inside its doors. Elopers can exchange vows on the rooftop, which looks out at District landmarks like the Washington Monument and the Capitol dome, on landscaped third-floor patios or under the elegant Falling Flowers glass chandelier. The package also includes accommodations, a custom cake, photographer and a secured hard-to-get chef’s table reservation for 10 at Estuary, the on-site Chesapeake Bay-inspired restaurant headed by Top Chef contestants the Voltaggio brothers. Legally Wedded The three states and District of Columbia all require marriage licenses to wed. Famously, Nevada has no waiting period or blood-test requirements. Montana and Washington D.C. also do not have waiting periods. The three states do require couples apply for permission to marry in person and furnish proof of age, as well as the allotted fee. A third party may apply in Washington D.C.

ike clogs and donuts, Maine is having a major moment. Long-favored as a classic seaside destination, the northeast state known for its rugged coast, pristine woodlands, charming villages, historic lighthouses and lobster à go-go, is trending with influencers, travel experts and rustic romantics in search of “the way life should be.” And with good reason, “Vacationland,” as is emblazoned on the state’s license plates, is as picturesque IRL as it is on the feed; its attractions and cuisine are authentic and unfiltered. There are national parks and endless beaches, boating adventures and intimate museums, cute shops and maker goods. I can’t forget the fantastic food and drink—it’s all local, fresh and delicious. Recently, I toured the state to experience it all and I relished the warmth of its people, the charm of its attractions and uploaded to my stories. P.S. THIS A-LIST DESTINATION WELCOMES A HOST OF NEW OPTIONS FOR ALL ROMANCE TRAVELERS. BY CARRIE BELL
Mexico’s Los Cabos—a magical beach-meets-desert-meets-mountains destination comprised of two towns, Cabo San Lucas and San José Del Cabo, and the 20-mile corridor that connects them—is hotter than ever, and for once it has nothing to do with global warming. Instead, this peninsular paradise, long beloved by celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, George Clooney and the Kardashians—yes, all of them— is finding new fans thanks to an influx of luxury resorts, a flourishing food scene, great weather, an increasing number of direct flights from the U.S. and plenty of exciting ways to create memories. Whether headed south of the border for your bachelorette weekend, wedding or honeymoon, here’s what’s new in eating, staying and playing in celeb-favored Cabo. ➺

Stay well at Chileno Bay Resort & Residences, an Auberge Resort.
FUN FACT: Cabo’s hallmark El Arco, the stone arch that juts into the ocean at the tip of the Baja peninsula sometimes experiences a phenomenon in which a golden beach appears around it. The secluded new Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas.
NEW STAYS Talk about a growth industry. The number of hotel rooms in Los Cabos grew from 14,000 to 17,000 in 2017 and 4,000 more are expected to come online before 2023 including the anticipated 115-room Zadún, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve with three golf courses and a desert botanical park. The East Cape has been largely untouched by tourists (you turn left out of the airport, not right) and that’s where the 141room Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas, the luxury chain’s first with a private marina, has set up shop. It’s far removed from the main towns, but the property thought of most everything: an organic farm and orchard, four pools, 18 holes of golf, a sports complex with tennis and volleyball courts, excellent dining options and an event space with an awesome indoor/ outdoor flow. Bonuses to the location are calmer, warmer waters and a sandy white swimmable coastline, which are uncommon in the region (room rates start at $850 a night; fourseasons.com). Nobu Los Cabos, the high-end brand’s first property in the country, opened in June 2019 on the peninsula’s southernmost tip. Its 200 rooms are all about tranquility with a Japanese minimalist design ethos, clean lines, teak soaking tubs, and high thread counts. Some suites come with butlers. There are four pools and swim-up cabanas. The 13,691 square-foot spa pampers with three different couples’ treatments and an outdoor hydrotherapy garden. hearsal dinners (rooms start at $400; loscabos.nobuhotels.com). The Resort at Pedregal recently rebranded as The Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal, but still offers the same smiley service, secluded oceanfront location (behind a towering rock mountain), romantic restaurant (El Farallón) where sea spray kisses your face as you savor grilled snapper, and a superior spa that blends modern techniques and traditional folk healing in treatments inspired by the lunar cycle and ocean. In honor of the property's 10th anniversary, three- and four-bedroom casonas (grand houses) debuted, which are perfect for wedding parties or bachelor/bachelorette weekends as they feature full kitchens, infinity pools, fire pits and butler service. All accommodations are equipped with private plunge pools and daily delivery of housemade guacamole and chips (room rates start at $575 a night; theresortatpedregal.com). The architecturally stunning Viceroy Los Cabos—with stark white rooms, glistening water “lawns” and Insta-bait nestshaped cevichería (ceviche restaurant)—technically opened in mid-2018, but 2019 brought the completion of its most prized amenities. Guests can now watch fiery sunsets while feasting on charred corn ravioli and cast-iron grilled octopus at Cielomar Rooftop, detox with the Hangover Healer Package in the 11,000 square-foot spa and aquatic grotto and cool off in an impressive pool positioned on the photogenic beach (room rates start at $420 a night; viceroyhotelsandresorts.com). NEW EATS Cuisine has become such an important part of a Los Cabos getaway that there’s an annual restaurant week and food and wine festival (Sabor A Cabo). Find everything from cheap street carts to pricey celebrity chef-showcasing establishments like Manta at The Cape (Enrique Olvera) or Seared at One & Only Palmilla (Michelin-starred Jean-Georges Vongerichten). New additions to the culinary scene include Cabo’s first Asian eatery, Arból, which cooks Indian and Far Eastern delights in tandoor and charcoal ovens, and simmering woks at Las Ventanas al Paraíso, a Rosewood Resort. Chef Costas Spiliadis chose the new Four Seasons as the site for Estiatorio Milos, the first Latin American outpost of his Mediterranean seafood empire. Misaki at Solaz, a Luxury Collection Resort, is a modern izakaya (casual Japenese pub) and sushi bar from Edo Kobayashi. But the hotter ticket is the six-person omakase (chefcurated sushi) experience in the private room. San Jose’s La Lupita, home to live music and 26 types of tacos including suckling pig and one that replaces the tortilla with a crusty cheese shell, opened a second location in Cabo San Lucas.
NEW SPIRITS It isn’t a fiesta until bottles are popped and cocktails are mixed. At an amazing array of spring-break dives, swim-up bars and sophisticated lounges, tequila is still king. Clase Azul Spirits created a limited edition bespoke Joven blend exclusively for One & Only Palmilla’s Agua Bar. Cool kids and hipster locals congregate in the skulls-heavy courtyard of Drift San Jose for
the mezcal bar, pulsating EDM and food trucks on Thursdays and Saturdays. Viceroy’s Otro Bar mixologists host the Forgotten Spirits Journey every Friday, which focuses on lesser known plant-derived liquors like aguamiel (an agave spirit) and stool (a tequila-like liquor). Craft beer is also hopping here. Baja Brewing Company, the first microbrewery in the state, offers a guided tour of its original San José Del Cabo factory. Stroll the facility cerveza in hand before sampling six suds styles and eating lunch in the beer garden with even more ales and IPAs. Their pizza dough is made daily with spent barley, yeast and beer. All-inclusive Grand Fiesta Americana combines grape stomping, foot massage, winetasting and alfresco dinner in its Barefoot Experience.
NEW EXPERIENCES Between watersports, wildlife watching, field tours/cooking classes, spas, art walks, camel rides and hiking, there’s never a dull moment. A few new ways to fill your itinerary include a new Greg Norman-designed golf course at Rancho San Lucas, Pedregal’s Luxploration menu, which includes options like voluntourism with school children in La Candelaria or swimming with whale sharks in La Paz, a Rancho Madrigal Cave Paintings ATV tour with Cabo Expeditions, and a chef-led sea-to-stew foraging expedition and picnic at Esperanza, an Auberge Resort. The yoga guru at Montage Los Cabos—itself only a year and a half old—helps couples connect on a deeper level through a breathing and meditation session. The Twin Dolphin Couple’s Journey, available to non-guests, also encompasses a damiana (a local aphrodisiac herb) tea ritual and side-by-side massages. During the multi-day Surf & Turf Experience at Grand Velas Los Cabos, helicopters whisk pairs to the desert for a fivecourse meal and electric bike ride in San Carlos Canyon and then to a 55-foot yacht to swim with sea lions and visit Espíritu Santo Island. It can be done as a sunset cruise as well. If you prefer someone else to find activities and book reservations, contact the new high-end bilingual concierge service Blue Desert, which also manages an array of villas for rent. The team can book transportation, help with wedding planning, arrange for babysitting and pair customers with private chefs or bartenders to ensure you have a hassle-free holiday. ¢

Her best-known book, Out of Africa, pays homage to Kenya in a story that relates her efforts to make a success of a coffee farm near Nairobi. The romantic nonfiction tale also details the safari heyday of the Hemingway era, relating how adventurous ex-pats would revel in the landscape, yet bring along all the accoutrements of “culture” (from books to lamps to whiskey) as they assembled tent camps in the bush. Blixen’s evocative scenes continue to inspire travelers for transformative photographic safaris “among the lions.” Take a safari honeymoon in Kenya’s Maasai Mara, one of the world’s most cherished wildlife-brimming expanses. Its noble animals, big-hearted residents, immense skies and soulful acacia-dotted grasslands ensure lifelong memories. UNITED STATES “There was nowhere to go but everywhere,” wrote Beat poet Jack Kerouac in his fictionalized autobiography On The Road, a work that set pop culture abuzz. A collection of adventurous road trips across the United States, the book, like the open road itself, became a metaphor for new beginnings. As you embark on a new life direction with a full tank of gas, explore some of the United State’s most distinctive cities. Invoke Kerouac’s unflagging spirit in Chicago, New Orleans, and San Francisco—and beyond. Note: Kerouac’s characters had more attitude than they had style. Honeymooners may want to luxe up their four-wheeled ramble from state to state. Kerouac described the skyscraper teeming metropolis of Chicago on Lake Michigan as “semi-eastern, semi-western.” In truth, it’s an artsy, blustery, unique bustling bit of urbanity. Ideal for sports fanatics, architecture buffs, extreme shoppers and epicureans,
the Windy City promises exhilarating days and dignified nights. Like a quilt lovingly sewn from found treasures, New Orleans may be the nation’s most unique city. Informed by its ties to Spanish, French, Native Americans, African slaves, pirates, and literary heroes, this southern bastion stands out as a best bet for foodies (Creole, Cajun and more), antique hunters and art mavens. Then go west. Hilly, foggy, avant-garde San Francisco has marched to its own drummer since its Gold Rush prospector beginnings. From the Golden Gate Bridge (and the national park that holds it) to Chinatown to Fisherman’s Wharf to cable cars, plus world-class restaurants and beaches, this city also sits just an hour from Napa Wine Country. WHERE TO STAY: In Chicago, check in at The Langham Chicago, set in a building designed by Mies van der Rohe. You’ll want the Regent Suite, which has jaw-dropping views of the Chicago River and city skyline (room rates start at $395 a night; langhamhotels.com). SPAIN Dream the impossible dream and live a honeymoon fantasy in Spain’s untrammeled Castilla-La Mancha—the setting for Miguel de Cervantes’ classic picaresque novel Don Quixote. Situated on sun-dappled, windswept plains, chockful of olive groves and vineyards, La Mancha, best known for the ornate city of Toledo and the walled haven of Cuenca, was home to Spain’s centuries-old regal class. With its characteristic blueroofed, ancient windmills, mysterious castles, historical towns, national parks (try mountainous Cabañeros National Park, a must for hikers), and stellar local cuisine (wine, saffron manchego cheese for starters), the expanse just south of Madrid brings out the romantic in any traveler. “Hunger is the best sauce in the world,” said Don Quixote himself. Need a shot of modernity? After bucolic La Mancha, head to urbane Madrid for art museums, sporting events, flea markets and long nights of tapas-ing and dancing until sunrise. WHERE TO STAY: You’ll embrace errant-knight mode (like Don Quixote himself) at Molino de Alcuneza. Ensconced in a 500-year-old restored mill near the medieval town of Siguenza, this intimate stay features a private spa, Michelin-starred restaurant, garden and pool. Book the commodious, bi-level Suite Premium, which boasts a terrace. Its location among the gardens adds a quixotic aura of fantasy (room rates start at $120 a night; molinodealcuneza.com). ¢
