Interview: Derren Brown Ex Bristol University student, Derren Brown returns to the city this month.

The multi-award winning acknowledged master of psychological illusion returns to the stage with his new one-man show, Derren Brown: Infamous. The show promises to demonstrate once again why Derren is one of the world’s most renowned live performers; a dark manipulator of magic and mind control. Born in Croydon in 1971, Derren traces his interest in magic and psychological techniques to childhood, but it was only later at Bristol University, where he studied Law and German that he started to take it seriously. After graduating from Bristol University, Derren abandoned a career in Law and concentrated on developing his skills at psychological magic. He was able to pay the bills by combining performing in local cafés and bars with a sideline in portraiture. His big break came in 1999 when he was asked by Channel 4 to put a TV show together. The result, Derren Brown: Mind Control, was shown in December 2000, proving an immediate success. Since then, on stage as well as on TV, Derren has exhilarated audiences world-wide with his unique brand of mind control, suggestion, showmanship and illusion. Having redefined the genre of magic, Derren has become synonymous with the art of psychological manipulation and his TV shows have become mustsee events. His Mind Control, Trick of the Mind and Trick or Treat TV series garnered rave reviews and awards and his extra-ordinary specials for Channel 4 over the past twelve years, which include: Russian Roulette, The Heist, Hero at 30,000 Feet. Miracles For Sale, The Experiments, Apocalypse and most recently, The Great Art Robbery have provoked much debate and consolidated his reputation as a performer prepared to constantly challenge and break down boundaries. Amongst a varied and notorious career he has played Russian Roulette live, convinced middle-managers to commit an armed robbery in the street, led the nation in a séance, stuck viewers to their sofas, successfully predicted the National Lottery, motivated a shy man to land a packed passenger plane at 30,000 feet, exposed psychic and faith-healing charlatans, hypnotised a man to assassinate Stephen Fry and trained four OAPs to steal a valuable painting. He is also banned from every casino in the country. His live shows have won him two prestigious Olivier Awards – Something Wicked This Way Comes (2006) and Svengali (2012) - and played to packed houses across the country every year since 2003. His most recent show, Infamous, will arrive in Bristol this April for a week of shows at Bristol Hippodrome. 7

Derren, you’re preparing to embark on the second leg on your Infamous tour. Can we expect the same show or will you be making any changes? It’ll be essentially the same show, though we normally make a few tweaks for the second leg. It’s good to have a chance to sit back and see if anything can be improved. Infamous has been very well received by critics and the general public alike. How does criticism, good or bad, affect you when you’re performing? It doesn’t. The only advice I really listen to is my director in the first instance, my producer, and occasionally my manager or the guys that come on tour with me make a point that I think is worth taking on board. It was clear quickly via Twitter that the show was being well-received, and it’s lovely to have that backed up by the press, but aside from the relief that no-one’s complaining about it I don’t think it has any effect on the show. It’s been well documented that you love touring. What’s the fatal attraction? Performing the show is a huge delight. It doesn’t matter what sort of day I’ve had, the show picks me up and leaves me buzzing with adrenalin. Normally I’m fairly quiet and perhaps a little isolated, so that in itself is a lovely feeling and provides a healthy balance. But aside from that, I get my days free to read or write and am able to travel round the country with a bunch of friends, all of us knowing we’re putting on a great show every night. I can’t imagine anything nicer. Are there any downsides to being on the road for six months of the year? It’s tricky when you’re in a relationship. It’s a common thing with performers – you don’t see your partner for months and then it takes a while, especially for the one who’s been at home, to get used to being back together again. And if big things are going on in your partner’s life and you’re not around to support them, that’s hard too. We’re both very independent and have our own creative things going on, which helps a lot, but we’re going to make more of effort next year to see each other on the road.

Will there be a new show for 2015? And any plans to tour abroad? Hopefully there’ll be a new show, certainly. As for taking it abroad, I’ve no huge drive to, other than to see some countries I otherwise wouldn’t. So I’m in no rush, and currently don’t have the time that would be needed to go abroad and promote it and so on. Are you pleased with how your latest TV special, The Great Art Robbery, has been received? Yes, it seemed to go down very well. I wanted to do something less ‘dark’ than Apocalypse, and it felt like I had exhausted the hidden-camera stunt genre. You can’t do much more with an unwitting participant than end the world for him! So this was very different - quieter in some ways but a real pleasure to make. A lot of people are saying how the recent shows have become warmer and less ‘self-orientated’. Would you agree with this? I’d hope so. I’m sure some people miss the mind-reading tricks but as I’ve grown up and felt less need to impress, I’ve enjoyed moving into an area where I can shift the spotlight to other people. It’s surely much more interesting watching real people steal a painting than a magician. In the latter case you’re never sure how much to believe or where his abilities are supposed to end, in which case the potential for drama is very limited. By putting the focus on members of the public and taking a behind-the-scenes role, I can work with clear drama and storytelling. And it doesn’t have to be huge: some old people swiping a painting can hopefully be every bit as compelling as a guy fighting post-apocalyptic zombies. There are still a lot of trickery and illusions on show. Would you say that your magic roots remain as important as ever? I seem to be in a lucky position now with TV where I can deal with a wide range of subjects. If I had been stuck with only ever being a ‘mentalist’ or magician I’d have lost interest by now. I like to use some of the knowledge I have as a magician and as a person with a keen interest in the fringe areas of psychology

8

and apply them in ways I find more interesting than appearing to read someone’s mind. But then stage is different from TV: it’s more enjoyable for me and a much more natural home for that sort of performance. In fact it’s a huge joy. And it’s theatre, which opens up a new kind of relationship with an audience that doesn’t happen with TV. I think it’s important in life to do what’s fun, rather than what you feel you ought to be doing, and for me now at 42, that means I have less interest in trying to impress people in real life or on TV with magic tricks, but a greater delight in trying to create these theatre shows. It might be that there’s a different unspoken contract with an audience that know they’ve come to see a show, or perhaps more selfishly it’s the adrenalin of doing it every night. Or more likely it’s a bit of both. Either way secular magic - and its related arts - can provide a very special experience and I’m enjoying finding ways that suit me as a grown-up of trying to provide that.

What are you reading at the moment? Schopenhauer quite avidly, while re-reading Anthony Storr’s Solitude and Darrin McMahon’s The Pursuit of Happiness. And when upon the loo, David Thorne’s The Internet is a Playground, which is truly hilarious.

What can we expect next in terms of TV?

And finally...you have 1.6 million followers on twitter but who are you currently following? Ha – I only follow 60 or so people. It’s a mix: Alain de Botton for my daily aphorisms, a handful of friends who use Twitter very well or make me laugh, and a few liberal intellectual types. More than that I couldn’t keep up with.

Most likely the next TV show will be the televised version of Infamous. Sadly a lot always has to be cut to fit these twohour-plus shows into about an hour of actual TV time, so the TV version never compares to seeing the shows live. Beyond that, who knows? If people retain interest, then perhaps it’s time to try something very different. You are also writing another book. Fact or fiction? I’m taking my time with the current book. And not fiction – not sure if I could write a novel, as I don’t really read them.

Are there any plans for a new exhibition of your paintings? Yes, hopefully at Rebecca Hossack’s London gallery late in 2014. Haven’t painted for two years so am hoping to get a chance to start again later this year. Is there anyone left you greatly admire that you haven’t painted yet? I moved away from painting famous people, particularly because I now only work from photographs I’ve taken myself, which was a good thing. Now I think I can return to painting known people but bring something more mature to the process.

Don’t miss Derren Brown’s INFAMOUS at Bristol Hippodrome between Mon 21st April - Sat 26th April.

Love Saves the Day 2014 24th and 25th May, Castle Park With weekend tickets now completely sold-out, here’s your chance to win a pair of tickets for you and a friend to the now legendary Love Saves The Day Festival 2014. Returning to Bristol’s Castle Park this May, Love Saves The Day will once again immerse Bristol in the very best electronic and bass music. Conceived by the brains behind Glastonbury’s WOW stage, See No Evil and one half of the team behind the much lauded In:Motion series, Love Saves The Day celebrates musical pioneers and innovators bringing together some of the finest DJ’s and live acts that the globe has to offer. Rocking the Main Stage on Saturday will be local hero Eats Everything whose expertly crafted mix of classic 80s and 90s house and contemporary UK bass has seen him receive such accolades as DJ Magazine’s ‘Best British DJ’ and ‘ Best Breakthrough Producer’ awards as well as becoming the highest new entry in Resident Advisor’s celebrated ‘Top 100 DJs Poll’. Radio 1’s Annie Mac is a true champion of the underground and one of the most in demand club and festival DJ’s on the planet. Her widely respected Friday night slot on Radio 1 is essential listening and Annie always knows how to work the crowd. With many more huge names taking to the stage on Saturday, including Clean Bandit, Hercules & Love Affair, Cyril Hahn, Nina Kraviz, and Craig Richards. 10

Sunday will see the mighty Sbtrkt headline the main stage at Love Saves The Day. From his early dub-tinged club focused singles to the crossover success of his selftitled debut album, Sbtrkt has never been afraid to push musical boundaries and his eagerly anticipated album is due for release in 2014. Preceding Sbtrkt will be one of the most respected names in music Jamie XX. Outside of his day job in Mercury Prize winning electronic indie outfit the XX, Jamie is a prolific producer and remixer. His signature combination of haunting melodies and low key club percussion provide the backbone for his work. An active DJ career, collaboration with the late, great Gil ScottHeron, production work for rap heavyweight Drake and a series of remixes for Radiohead are an indicator of exactly how diverse an artist he has become. Surely one of the most hyped and eagerly anticipated albums of 2014 already is forthcoming from Neneh Cherry with RocketNumberNine. Produced by manof-the- moment FourTet, with guests such as Robyn featuring, it is Neneh’s first solo album in 17 years. Neneh also has a special affinity with Bristol, having been amongst the first to champion the ‘Wild Bunch’ who later became ‘Massive Attack’, lending them her studio many years ago that enabled the recording of the seminal ‘Blue Lines’. This is going to be a pretty special Bristol show for us all.

Love Saves The Day is delighted to welcome DJ, producer and Magnetic Fields head honcho Will Holland aka Quantic who makes a rare UK appearance with his new live show. Despite the generations between them, dub production stalwart Adrian Sherwood and fresh-faced dub step producer Pinch have teamed up to create an incredible clash of heritage dancehall, reggae and modern electronic music. Their set will be highly anticipated as will performances from drum & bass legend Shy FX, bass boy of the moment Dismantle and another of Radio 1’s champions of dance music B. Traits. The legendary Greg Wilson will take to the decks at the UK’s finest electronic music festival with Gentleman’s Dub Club, Laid Blak, Special Request, A Sagittarian, Jus Now, Congo Natty and many others ensuring that festival goers enjoy the very best electronic sounds the globe has to offer. Love Saves The Day partners with some of Bristol’s and the UKs finest clubbing institutions including Just Jack, Futureboogie, The Dance Off, Teachings In Dub, Black Butter, The Blast, Horse Meat Disco and Soul Train. changed the look of ice shows. I am very excited to bring the daring and dazzling world of figure skating back into an intimate theatrical setting.

Olympic champion and head judge on ITV’s Dancing on Ice, Robin Cousins has hand- picked the greatest ice skaters from around the globe to bring his incredible new production to life.

“The show is not an adaptation of a ballet, or borrowed from the world of musical theatre. There are no judges, just the audience. It is a show where the choreography is driven by the music, where the movement has room to breathe, and the skaters can let their blades do the talking. To be able to move like a skater is every dancer’s dream. To be motionless, yet travelling at great speed. Skaters are able to soar across the frozen stage in ways a dancer can only dream of doing.”

Robin Cousins is an internationally recognized name on both ice and stage, known for his innovative performing style on ice. Besides his 16 major International titles he has performed, choreographed and directed 10 productions for the world renowned Holiday on Ice, skated on stage at the Radio City Music Hall, starred as ‘Billy Flynn’ in the London production of “Chicago” and is Head Judge on ITV’s hugely successful show “Dancing on Ice”. Dynamic and atmospheric “Robin Cousins’ ICE” will draw you into its unique world, where world class skaters glide, soar, flip and fly in a truly theatrical setting. ICE features a powerful soundtrack of original music and reworked modern classics designed to delight and enthrall. Robin Cousins’ ICE redefines ice skating for a new generation with a spectacular show the like of which UK theatres have not seen in 30 years. St George’s Bristol An intimate setting with pin-drop acoustics. Passion for music is the soul of this Georgian church turned concert hall. The eclectic and creative programme covers all kinds of music; classical, chamber, choral, jazz, folk, roots, world and more. Local musicians and emerging artists are promoted alongside internationally renowned megastars like Philip Glass, Nicola Benedetti and Marc Almond.

MARTIN SIMPSON

O BRO

Religious about music? Tucked away off Park Street set in beautiful gardens there’s a very special place, a hidden gem of a concert hall, where you can experience music from across the ages and the globe. The venue used to be a church but today it is better known as a home for those among you who are passionate (and even fanatical) about music, people who love to lean in and listen deeply.

W

ithout St George’s some of the greatest musicians and thinkers just would not be able to come to Bristol. The Festival of Ideas has happily made a home for itself alongside the Orchestra in the Age of Enlightenment, internationally renowned World Music artists and some of the coolest Indie/ Americana cross-over acts. We try not to get too caught up in genre, we just love great music and great musicians. Artists play here because our attentive audiences literally hang off every note and our acoustic is second to none.

What have you missed? Well there’s a lot to miss in 28 years, but just last month you could have seen Grammy-winning singer Gregory Porter, Scottish folk funksters Salsa Celtica, Mali’s Ngoni master, Bassekou Kouyate and Norwegian jazz supremo Tord Gustavsen.

Come and have your St George’s moment. Visit our website and sign up for email newsletters today.

Featured artist - Dorcas Casey Dorcas Casey is a Bristol-based sculptor with an impressive CV, having exhibited nationally and internationally, won a Royal British Society of Sculptors Bursary Award and been selected as a finalist for the Broomhill National Sculpture Prize. Her latest show, Gravitas, is a duo-show with painter Abigail Reed at Antlers Gallery in Purifier House, exploring the continual and complex relationships between humans and animals. Casey’s work is inspired by the recurring appearance of animals in her dreams, and the impulse that makes her want to create physical objects from those images. Interview: Mikky Ekko We catch up with Mikky Ekko after the breakthrough success of his grammy-nominated duet with Rihanna, ‘Stay’

Louisia-born singer songwriter Mikky Ekko is the breakthrough artist of the moment, after his collaboration with Rihanna on ‘Stay’ propelled him into the limelight last year. Mikky wrote ‘Stay’ as a solo originally, before it was picked up by Rihanna’s management and subsequently became one of the biggest singles of the year. Rihanna herself has said that the song is one of her “favourite songs (she’s) ever sang and performed”. The single was nominated for an award at this year’s Grammys for ‘Best Pop Duo/ Group Performance’, losing out to Daft Punk and Pharrell’s mega-hit ‘Get Lucky’. And Rihanna is backing her co-star for big things, telling reporters “This is the first time the world has really had a chance to see him and hear his artistry, and he’s nominated for a Grammy! That really speaks to his talent.” He’s now set to release his debut album this September, having worked with huge names like Pharrell Williams, Ryan Tedder Greg Kurstin on the record. We had the opportunity to catch up with the rising-star when he came to Bristol last month to support One Republic on their UK, stopping off at Bristol’s O2 Academy... Welcome to Bristol. How do you like touring in the UK? I love the UK. I’ve spent a lot of time in London and Wales. In terms of touring, I only did a few dates last time I did my own smaller tour, but I’m really excited to be out with One Republic right now and getting a chance play to their audience and see how some of the songs go over. ‘Cause I’ve written with Tedder (One Republic) as well, so it kind of feels like family all ready. 52

What can audiences expect from the tour? A tonne of energy. Between my show and theirs, it stays really hype I think. It’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s a real singers kind of show, the whole thing. A lot of people will know you from your collaboration on ‘Stay’ with Rihanna. She’s been very vocal about how talented she thinks you are. What was it like working with her? Great! That song was crazy - I think the entire story is just such a Cinderella story. I think I’ve been blessed to get the opportunity so I’m just trying to take advantage of it. She was a delight! You began working as a songwriter, is that right? I’ve always written for me, I consider myself an artist first and the songs come second. But I took some time away from playing live to write because I wanted to really develop that. And you know, a song here or there that I realised wasn’t for me, I would give to someone else. Do you struggle with giving your songs away? Do you not get tempted to keep them for yourself? Yeah, for sure! But half the time I don’t even know if a song is any good, I’ll just try and get it out as quickly as I can and, you know, capture that lightening in a bottle. And I’ll sit with it. It’s usually about a week and I’ll know. And I’ll just see where it fits - does it fit on the record or does it work for something else? Do you ever intentionally write for other people? No, not really. It’s always been the case with me that my best stuff comes when I’m just writing from exactly where I am. I

think maybe I’ll hit that at some point, but right now I feel like what’s special about what I do is my perspective. When I move into that lane (writing for others), it can get deluded for me sometimes. So I try and keep it like that and then just put it out in the air, you know. Rihanna has said that ‘Stay’ is one of her favourite songs she’s ever recorded. What inspires your lyrics? Just trying to be honest with myself. Sometimes it’s a little bit dark, sometimes it’s angry, and then sometimes it just needs to chill out or get a lift, or whatever. For me it’s about trying to find what’s really at the heart of me, and then I’ll say to myself, “What do I really need to say? What needs to be said?” And then I just try to go with it as fast as I can. Your father was a preacher, has your religious upbringing influenced your music at all? Yeah, I think everything influences my music. Everything from the time I was born until now - before I was born even! It instilled in me, from a really young age, the reverence of music and the way it brings people together. So I learned to sing with people, and I sang in the church sometimes when I was a kid, and I think that I learned a lot from that about what people want to feel. I still carry a lot of that with me, you know - religious or not - the way music effects people is so similar, no matter who you are. And that’s one thing that’s really effected the way I want to approach people with this record. We’re looking forward to hearing your debut album. Can you tell us a bit more about it? I’ve written with a bunch of incredible, incredible people and we’re still trying to figure out exactly which songs we want on the record. I’ve written with Pharrell, and Tedder, and I’ve written with Greg Kurstin... Literally more people than I can name right now.

We’re finishing production on the record right now and we’re going through 15-20 sings which have been narrowed down from like, 100! And I’m still writing. Really, it should be tied up in the next month and we’re hoping for a September release. Exciting! I’m so excited! I’m really just ready to say, “Okay, this is it!” I’m so ready to perform it live. Playing last night I just get that feeling, you know? I’m ready to be on the road! I love the studio, but it’s kind of a comfort blanket for me. ‘Cause I can get in there and have fun all day long, but it’s when you really test it on the battlefield you get to see what you’re made of and see if the songs stand up. You’ve had phenomenal success considering you haven’t brought out your first album yet! How was it being nominated for a Grammy so early on in your career? (laughs) That’s really surreal! Having friends tell me they saw me on the Grammys, I was like “wow that’s crazy”. I just remember being a kid and saying one day I want to be here and one day I want to perform on the Grammys, and both have happened - a little early - but it’s not a bad thing! I feel like I’ve stared Goliath in the face, so I kind of know how it feels and it’s really only made me hungry! To put it together and put it out there. You seemed to kind of burst onto the scenes with ‘Stay’, was it all as quick as it seemed to us or was it a much longer process? Here’s what I would say - you work hard at something for a long time at something and nobody sees those hours behind the scenes, but then when it pops, you just kind of go. It’s like you light the fuse and you just try to keep it lit and keep that fire going. And you kind of cross your fingers and you wait for a time, but you stay ready and we stayed ready, and it happened! We were all pleasantly surprised when it did - it was an honour to be singing with her. It has been crazy, and fast!

Independent shopping in Bristol: Meet the owners... Thanks to schemes like the Bristol Pound and ‘Bristol Independents’, Bristol is a city that breeds a culture of independent shopping. Home to some of the best independent shops in the UK, there are dozens of fantastic, one-of-a-kinds for Bristol shoppers explore. Each month we meet the minds behind the city’s best shops to find out what makes independent shopping in Bristol so brilliant. This month, we spoke to Tim and Harriet who run No.31, a new shop from Urban Graphic.

Bristol-born company Urban Graphic are responsible for publishing some of the most loved card designs around today from the likes of Jemma Correll and Rob Hodgson. You can find their products in Paperchase, Scribbler, Waterstones, The Tate Modern, The Design Museum, The V&A, Urban Outfitters and more, but now they have opened their own quirky little gift shop at No.31 Baldwin Street. The store is run by Harriet, a freelance illustrator and graffiti artist with a degree in graphic design from Bristol’s UWE (you check out her incredible work at www.misshazard.tumblr.com)’ and Tim whose background is in retail fashion. 100

Once inside, it feels more like an art gallery or design museum than your typical run-of-the- mill gift shop. Every detail has been carefully considered, from the warped wooden floorboards to the industrial style display cabinets. You can tell, No.31 is much more than just a gift shop. Downstairs, they are in the process of building their own printing workshop which will offer tutorials and workshop events. They are also heading up their first artist exhibition opening this May from artist/ illustrator, Al Murphy. The exhibition will run all month, with a launch event on the 1st of May. For more information, subscribe to the Urban Graphic newsletter online or turn to their full listing on page 124. Tell us a bit about Urban Graphic... Tim: Urban Graphic is primarily a publishing company. We’ve been trading for over 10 years now and they work from a studio up in Clifton. So all the cards and all the wrap are all published by ourselves. We also make tea towels and aprons, mugs and coasters and we’ve got temporary tattoos coming in!

They’re going to be really good. We do some currently from Taffy, which is an american company, but we thought we could do it better ourselves with all the artists we use for our publishing side. We’re really excited about those coming in. The idea behind the No.31 shop really was that, because we send a lot of our printing to other printers - especially screen printing - we wanted our own place to do that. So the building was bought primarily for that reason. And downstairs is going to become our workshop. Hopefully by the summer it will be up and running properly! We’re hoping we can do tutorials and workshops. But that left us with this lovely space, so we thought we’d open a gift shop. Stocking our complete range of Urban Graphic and here we are! We like the fact the we’re sourcing product which are quite new to this country, people like Miro Watches, Le Baigneur - which is a French male grooming brand, so there’s lots of nice things.

Harriet: We try and sell stuff that’s design-led, so it’s a little bit more creative and has that focus on maybe graphics or the product design. Do you have a certain style of product that you stock? Harriet: I think it’s just the stuff that we like! Tim: Basically if we like it, and it’s different, we’ll buy it. The prints that you see on the wall are primarily prints from artists or illustrators that we’ve used for our card range. So those will be limited editions, or the original print that we’ve taken the image from. The idea for that long-term, and the first one is happening thanks to Harriet - next month, is a rolling exhibition. So that we will always be exhibiting someone’s work. Harriet: We’ve got Al Murphy coming to do an exhibition for a month on the 1st of May.

Sound great! Is there going to be a launch event? Tim: Yes! Will will contact everyone who has been kind enough to give us their details on our mailing list. For us, it’s great to push an artist like that, although he is quite well known in his own right anyway now, and it just makes people more aware of us in the city. We’re very much part of the Bristol Old City scene. We want to make this more than just a destination place (Baldwin Street) for the evenings to get drunk, you know, ‘cause it a lovely area around here. The buildings are fantastic and there’s lot of independents who are opening up, whether it be somewhere like The Birdcage or some nice coffee places. We want to be part of that nice feeling, St Nick’s Market, the whole thing. And it’s working! It really attracts the people that this area didn’t used to attract. Harriet: It’s quite a creative little hub. Do you work with any Bristol designers? Harriet: We’re looking to get Ged Palmer to do a show at the end of summer. I’ve got such skills envy - I think he’s amazing! He’ll do a big wall over there. So yeah, I think we are looking to get Bristol designers more involved. What can readers expect to find in No.31? Harriet: Any occasion cards - we’ve got the whole range! We’ve got cards where you need to get someone a card, but you don’t want to get them your typical ‘Happy Birthday’. You can get them something a little more quirky and different. It’s a bit more personal. Tim: There’s something for everyone here. Niche perfumes, we do male and female grooming products, we do shaving sets, we do watches, we do headphones... We try and be really a bit pioneering in what we do. We don’t limit ourselves to a certain genre, if you like. We don’t think that we’re just a gift shop, we’re like to think we’re much more than that! 102

Harriet: If you’re looking to get a gift for someone and you want them to realise that you’ve thought about what you’re going to get them and they’ve got something a bit different, then this is the place that you can come and do that. Tim: What we like is that people come in here, they have a look around, we leave them to it, and then they burst out laughing. Some people walk around laughing their heads off and it’s nice to know that we’re responsible for that. It’s not like we’re sent a load of stuff and we’ve got to try and sell it, we choose it. We do all our own buying. We go to London, go to all the shows, and we find what we think is nice. It’s the sort of place where you can spend a while just looking around and just enjoying yourself as part of a Saturday afternoon. What else is great about No.31? Tim: We’re able to custom things as well, if somebody likes one of our cards we can get that printed to whatever size they want, framed and sent. We’ve just done that for somebody in London. It was a card about a pie or something and it really hit a nerve with someone - they were desperate to get it! So if you really like a particular card but you want it as a print, then we’re happy to do that. And that’s what we really like making a little impression on someone.
