Interview: Eats Everything We talk to Bristol’s own Eats Everything ahead of his headline set at this year’s Love Saves the Day Festival.
Eats Everything aka Dan Pearce is one of the hottest producers and DJs to recently emerge from Bristol’s bass central, storming onto the scene with his aptly named ‘Entrance Song’ in 2011, which was favourited by the likes of Maya Jane Coles and Jamie Jones. The following months saw Dan named ‘Best Breakthrough Producer’ and ‘Best British DJ’ by DJ Magazine in a whirlwind hype that doesn’t look set to die down any time soon. His long list of achievements include placing a very respectful number thirteen in Resident Advisor’s ‘Top 100 DJs’. He also holds the honour of becoming the only DJ ever to do two BBC Radio 1 Essential Mixes within the space of a year. However, his wasn’t an overnight success story by any means. Bristol music heads will know Dan well, after a long haul of DJ residencies under various guises spanning nearly two decades
that seemed to keep him forever on the peripheral of success, but never quite pushing him over. Even his breakthrough hit, Entrance Song was first rejected by 6 different labels, before getting into the right hands. But after a chance meeting with american DJ and producer J Phlip, she handed his CD over to Catz N Dogs who promptly signed the record, launching one of the biggest house tracks of the year. Now moving forward with his new ‘Edible’ concept, Dan is hoping to amalgamate his many different facets under one brand, with plans for an Edible record label, loads of parties and maybe even a nightclub in Bristol one day. Dan is set to close the main stage at this year’s Love Saves Saturday, and he tells us he’s got a few ‘treats’ in store for his home crowd.... 7
I released a few records on crap labels, nothing happened. Then I got told to ditch the name cos it was rubbish and it was uncool. And then luckily Catz ‘N Dogs didn’t care about any of that stuff. They just liked the music. Since then you’ve won loads of awards including Best Breakthrough Producer and Best British DJ. At what point did you realise that you’d really made it? I still don’t think I have. Until I live in a house that’s completely paid for and I’m selling out stadiums that you can fit 50,000 people in, like Avicii and those kind of idiots; or unless your Carl Cox or you’re Richie Hawtin, I don’t think I’ll ever think I’ve made it. I can always do better, I can always reach higher, I can always play bigger gigs and I can always sell more records. I think the second you think that you’ve made it, the second it all starts going downhill, in my opinion anyway. Well you are playing quite a few of huge gigs and festivals this year, including Glastonbury... Yes, my name’s on the main flyer - I couldn’t believe it! I was in America and they were like have you’ve seen the Glastonbury poster? I looked at it and I was like, fuck! I’ve pretty much ticked off every one of my dreams now. Unless I could go back in time and play at Twilo in New York, that’s the only dream I’ll never fulfill. All the other dreams I’ve done, I’ve warmed up for Carl Cox, I’ve played at Amensia, Space Terrace - I might as well die now!
You massively exploded onto the scene with Entrance Song in 2011. How did that all come about? I made the record in the middle of 2010, sent it to a load of places and no one was interested in it. I called it Entrance Song ‘cause when I made it I was like, cor there’s nothing out there like this. Obviously in the past things had sounded similar, but in that modern era nothing had sounded like it. I thought, this is the one! Then it was like a massive come down ‘cause none of the labels I’d worked with wanted it and no one was into it. Then Claude Von Stroke was playing in Bristol at a night called Just Jack and I had gone there with the CD to give to him, but he was too busy. But then I met J Phlip, who was playing upstairs and chatted to her for a bit. I gave her the CD, she check it out, loved it, and gave it to Catz ‘N Dogz in Miami. Then they emailed me a couple of days later saying, “love it, can we sign it?”. I actually preferred the B-Side, I still do, but that didn’t really do anything. It got eclipsed by Entrance Song. People just started playing it, I didn’t even play it until it came out! I’d made it such a long time ago that I’d stopped playing it, but then Maya Jane Coles was playing it, Bashmore, all these people, but because it had been knocked back so many times, you lose confidence in it. And then all of a sudden, I was on holiday in Turkey and it was just going up and up the Beatport chart and I was getting all these calls and messages. And that’s how it happened - it’s still mad! Can you tell us a bit more of the history behind Eats Everything? I’ve been DJing for a long time - since 1993ish. I was into jungle and hardcore, and then I just progressed. You learn about different styles of music and as you get older you grow out of things and move on. I got into house about 1995. Eats Everything came about when I was working with this guy called Masataki Toyotaan, cool guy, but he got to about 36 and was like, I don’t want to do this anymore. We were just on the periphery and nothing was really happening. So I was like fuck it, I’ll give myself a stupid name and made my own logo. I never used to have any vowels in Everything, but everyone was doing that at the time, like MSTRKRFT, there were loads of people doing it, so I decided to put them back in. 8
Do you think electronic and house music in general has made a bit of a move towards the mainstream? Oh definitely! It’s always dipped in and out, it ebbs and flows, doesn’t it? Recently, house or deep house like Disclosure has basically paved the way for everyone. The amount of records you hear now that sound like Disclosure is getting ridiculous. But that’s the way mainstream music works. If you look at when Lady Gaga first did ‘Just Dance’, that had that kind of electro/ house-y kind of feel to it, and from there just spawned this mass of just... Well, for the last three years chart music has basically been full-on electro house, hasn’t it? Even all of the Chris Browns and all those people are doing it. Every riff sounds the same, it’s all electro-trance kind of stuff. Now if you listen, you’ve had Disclosure kill it, make amazing music and groundbreaking album, and so you get all the other people latching on and all of a sudden every number one is a deep house - in very big inverted commas - record. It’s amazing that this kind of music has come through and what it will do is push the people who were into Disclosure, once that becomes too mainstream, to go and find people like myself, Jamie Jones, or whoever the underground - I say that with even bigger inverted commas - are. It’s amazing that it’s gone that way, but it always ebbs and flows. If you look back at the 90s, house music was massive then it took a dip in early 2000s. It just keeps coming in and out and always will do. Garage and house just mesh through the charts and it will always be the same. Bristol has a bit of a history for producing great house music. Do you think growing up in Bristol had an influence on your sound? Great music in general. Some of my heroes, like DJ Die and people like that who I grew up listening to and are now my mates, they definitely had an influence on what I do. I’ve got utmost respect for Bristol’s music heritage, it’s an amazing thing. It’s the best city in the world, I’d never leave here. With regards to my sound, I don’t know. It has had an influence, but I don’t think any one thing in particular has influenced my sound, I think a whole wide range of stuff: Bristol music heritage, old school hardcore techno, everything has influenced me. I’m a DJ at the end of the day, I only produce records so I can DJ. You can’t be a DJ without producing music anymore. Apart from your Jackmasters, Ben UFO, Heidi, there are a couple of others, but generally they’re the only people who have managed to forge
a career in the modern era without actually having to put our music that they’ve made themselves. Generally you have to be a producer and that’s the way I had to take it. Now that I make music I love it, but I am a DJ. You’ve just finished a DJ residency at XOYO haven’t you? How was that? The opening party was just me all night long and the closing party was just me all night long. Every party was amazing but if you’ve got me and Skream on a night, or one night there was me, TEED (Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs), Gerd and Heidi - that’s guaranteed to be rammed; but the ones where it’s just me on my own, it was like, are people going to come? The closing party was one of the best parties I’ve ever played at in my entire life. The atmosphere was just ridiculous! It was definitely one of the best things I’ve done in my career so far. It was a guaranteed amazing party every week with all my mates and these new friends I made. I closed with We Are Family, Sister Sledge because it felt like it was a family. Honestly, it felt like being in a club in the 90s - it was amazing. I’ll never forget it. What is the ‘Edible’? Edible is a vehicle to expand. Rather than just being a guy that’s a DJ, Edible is a ‘brand’. It may be a record label in future, we’re probably going to put some records out but low- key, it’s not going to be any big Dirtybird type thing, just underground music that I love. Parties. So we can do parties in Ibiza and all over the world. It’s a brand to take to places, rather than just having me as a DJ. I’d love to own a nightclub one day, a really wicked club in Bristol. There’s no club in Bristol at the moment that runs week in week out every Friday and Saturday that’s jammed every week. I’d love to own that, so that may be something I’ll do in future. We’re looking forward to your set at Love Saves the Day 2014. This is your third year playing, but this year you’re closing the main stage on Saturday. How does that feel?
It feels amazing, I can’t believe it. When they told me I was like, shut up! You idiots. I’m so exited about it. At last year’s Love Saves the Day, I had another one of those overwhelming moments. I closed the Just Jack stage last year, and Jackmaster was playing before me and it was pretty busy, but it wasn’t, you know... because there was someone amazing on the main stage. I was thinking, I’m fucked. Then all of a sudden there was just this sea. I was like, oh my lord! This was my home town and there must have been 8,000 people. As far as you could see back there was people. I was like, oh my god. I’ve got to perform here now! I was quite calm before but then as soon as I got up to the stage - I even knocked Jack’s needle! He was playing vinyl and I knocked his needle off during his last song. It started horribly wrong, but it was amazing. And then to be told you’re doing the main stage, I’m basically going to have to make it special. I’m going to get in the studio and I’m going to do some special things. I have to, I can’t just go play a DJ set. I’ve got to really up the anti if I’m closing the main stage in my home town. I’ve got to make it as good as I possibly can. I’m going to create a few little treats I think - or try to! I’m going to try my best to make it really, really good. I’m so excited! I can’t wait. Park Street Water Slide This year’s Make Sunday Special series kicks off in a big way with the highly anticipated ‘Park and Slide’ installation from Bristol artist Luke Jerram. One Sunday 4th May, Park Street will be transformed into a giant 90m water slide which will be free for members of the public to use. The project was conceived to challenge the way we think about how we navigate our city - and the potential for change. “Bristol’s very hilly – imagine if we had permanent slides about the city, running from Clifton to Hotwells or Cotham to Stokes Croft?” says Jerram. A colossal 96,573 people signed up for their chance to ride the slide, but with places limited to only 360, only a lucky few will get to have a go.
New Burger Joint opens in Bedminster Winner of Bristol’s Best Burger (Bristol Good Food Awards) is opening up a new restaurant on North Street this May. The restaurant are testing all systems are go by inviting 400 people to enjoy a free meal at the new branch! Check out their menu on page 77
New Banksy: Mobile Lovers Maverick street artist Banksy resurfaced last month after a notable absence with a new artwork known popularly as ‘Mobile Lovers’ appearing overnight on Clement Street. The image depicts an embracing couple distracted by their mobile phones. The artwork was stenciled on the doorway of the Broad Plains Boys Club, but removed less than 24 hours later by the club owner to protect it from theft and vandalism, causing an ownership dispute with Bristol City Council. The youth club had hoped that the piece would help in their current fundraising bid to raise £120,000 to save the club from closure, however Mayor George Ferguson has said he believed “it belonged to the city”. The Mayor has asked that the piece be returned to its original site on the wall, saying that removing the artwork was “against the spirit of Banksy and street art”. Bristol City Council argued the work was on its land and it has been taken to the city museum for safekeeping while the matter is resolved. In the meantime, members of the public can currently view the Banksy at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery (page 41).

Bristol Bass Oddity Bristol becomes the focus of a channel four documentary series ‘Music Nation’ which explores the glory days of the UK’s best underground music scenes over the last 25 years. In the third episode in the series, ‘Bristol Bass Oddity’ looks at how the city has constantly redefined global electronic music over three decades, with contributions from Smith & Mighty, Portishead’s Geoff Barrow, DJ Derek and many more. The episode is available to view on 4oD until 16th May.

Welcome to our world! People often think that St George’s is only a venue for classical music, in fact classical music only makes up about half our eclectic programme. This month we are very lucky to have some inspirational world music artists, from as far afield as Romania and Mali, stopping off in Bristol (just off Park Street actually).

avourites of BBC6 Music, Tinariwen (or “deserts”), are Tuareg tribesmen from Saharan Mali whose remarkable music on electric and acoustic guitars, percussion and vocals is both bluesy and trancey. Their beautifully sinuous songs have won the admiration of Robert Plant, Brian Eno and U2. Wild gypsy string band Taraf de Haidouks will leave you breathless with their delirious and joyful live performance. Toumani Diabate’s kora playing has made him an international virtuoso comparable to the biggest names
in western-classical music, but if anything is better than one kora, it has to be two as Toumani plays both solo and in duo with his son Sidiki, in the master-and-apprentice family tradition which Toumani can trace back through 71 generations.

Interview: Futureboogie We talk to the brains behind the multi-faceted Futureboogie who have been at the forefront of the Bristol underground music scene for over a decade
Steve Nickoll and Dave Harvey are major players in Bristol’s growing house music scene. Operating under the umbrella Futureboogie, the pair act as a booking agency (Bonobo, Waifs & Strays), artist management (Crazy P), record label (Eats Everything, Julio Bashmore) and prolific thrower of parties. They also DJ under the Futureboogie banner, using pseudonyms Joe90 (Steve) and El Harvo (Dave). They both also have a hand in a number of separate projects in Bristol and elsewhere. Dave makes up one half of Team Love, who bring us Love Saves the Day festival, The Love Inn on Stokes Croft (page 68), as well doing the programming for See No Evil, The Red Bull Music Academy Stage at St Paul’s Carnival, and the WOW stage at Glastonbury. The pair moved to Bristol thirteen years ago after getting frustrated with the (lack of) music scene in their hometown of Leicester, and they’ve been weaving their way to the centre of Bristol’s forcible underground music scene ever since. Starting out as a club night, they launched their now highly respected music label three years ago with Julio Bashmore’s smash hit ‘Father Father’. Futureboogie have what looks like another huge year ahead of them. We met up with the pair to see where it all began. 52
So a lot of people know Futureboogie the Record Label from your huge releases from the likes of Julio Bashmore and Eats Everything. But you do much more than the record label don’t you? Could you explain Futureboogie in a nutshell? Steve: It would be quite a big nutshell, it’s been around for that long there’s quite a lot to it. It started as a club night, which was called ‘Seen’ and that turned into Futureboogie really. And then from that came the booking agency and management and the record label. And now really the record label and the events have merged into one. All of our events are to do with the label. And also I guess as an aside to that, David has moved into doing lots of event booking, festivals and programming and stages, and his own festival, Love Saves the Day, which is separate to Futureboogie, but obviously there’s a lot of crossover. That’s probably as nutshell as I can make it. That was quite nutshell wasn’t it? You’ve just celebrated your 12th birthday as Futureboogie. How did the two of you come together originally? Steve: Well we were just mates from Leicester, and there was a few of us that moved to Bristol at around the same time and we decided to start a club night, it was simple as that. We had all been involved in music in various ways in Leicester, promoting
or DJing or just going out and whatever. And I suppose it’s fair to say we all got a little bit frustrated with Leicester, being there and what it offered opportunity wise to do with music. So we just decided to come here and start a club night.
A lot of artists that you’ve released have made it really big now (Bashmore, Waifs and Strays). Is there anyone on the label at the moment you’re really championing for a breakthrough?
And we got given a break by a nice lady called Becky who was programming at a club called Level at the time. She just let us have a go! We said this is what we want to do, and she just said “yeah, try it!”. And then the other stuff just kind of happened.
Dave: All of them! For example, the latest release we’ve got is Felix Dickinson who’s a really good friend of ours and he’s been around for years. He’s quite big within his scene, but we think he’s going to have quite a big year this year. He’s just had an EP out on DFA. And he’s then got the release coming out with us this month.
Dave: It’s all grown very organically out of doing the night to start with, and then working with certain DJs and so on who then became the basis of the agency. And the label was something we had talked about doing for years and that kind of grew out of an opportune moment. Steve: A series of happy accidents you might call it. Do you think being in Bristol was important? Would you say the music culture here had anything to do with it? Dave: Absolutely. It’s one of the strongest music cities in the country, isn’t it? Historically and now. There’s a good scene here, there’s lots of producers here, there’s promoters here, there’s venues. Yeah, it’s a great place to be involved in music. Steve: It’s definitely intrinsic to what we’ve done. Certainly with the label, that’s very much always been kind of based around artists from Bristol. Dave: It’s a big part of the identity of what we do. All of it, it’s informed and influenced by Bristol, by living here for thirteen years. What was it that prompted you to finally launch the label? Steve: It was Bashmore’s track, Father Father. I was DJing at a night that he was playing at and I heard the track. I thought, ooh what’s that? That’s brilliant. So we chatted and set the label up and launched with that track. And then as soon as we launched, a lot of our friends who were making music anyway pulled their finger out and suddenly we had five releases ready to go in a very short amount of time.
Hackman obviously we put him out in January. He was quite well known anyway but he’s got an album coming out this year so he’s definitely going to be one to watch. And then Christophe, who we’ve worked with from the start. He takes a long time to get stuff done, but we think he’s going to have another great year. Who else have we got stuff coming out with? Steve: We’ve just done admin. She’s a young lass from Bristol. So I think maybe in some ways it’s not always about somebody breaking though, and all that’s obviously relative  anyway, but it’s quite satisfying to have someone like Admin, who you put out a release from them and it helps them down the road to doing more releases and getting more gigs. So it’s a combination of that as well as having a tune out from say, Bashmore or Eats Everything or Hackman who you can see on the trajectory to being quite big acts, certainly in Dan’s (Eats) case, a massive act. Dave: We’re quite fortunate the way that it’s panned out is our events are I suppose as important as the label, and it’s a brilliant way for us to showcase artists who are on the label. And a really good excuse for us all to get together and have a party. Steve: I’d like to see Chris and Luke (Christophe & Lukas) break through actually. Just ‘cause they’re mates and they’ve been doing it a long time, and they’re really talented. And Outboxx as well, they’re a big local act. They’re young as well, they’ve not been doing it that long. 53
Dave: They’re really good. Steve: But it would be nice to see things happen for them. And I think things are happening for them, but it would but nice to see that and know that we played a little part in it by putting some tunes out How do you pick the people you work with? Dave: 95% of the people we’ve worked with, we’ve already had a relationship with. That’s quite a big part of it. Ideally we want to put out music by people we also want to go to the pub with and do parties with. We do a lot of label showcases at festivals so it’s great that we can basically take a big group of our mates along. We can’t do it all the time, but certainly for me that that’s a really important part of this- can we call it a project? Steve: Project makes it sound like there’s a plan! Dave: And then obviously we get sent a lot of demos. If something is really standout, then it doesn’t matter if we know those people. But I think it would be fair to say it definitely helps if we’ve got a relationship with you. So buy you a drink at the pub first, then? Steve: That sounds awful! Dave: ...but it wouldn’t hurt. What has been the biggest moment for Futureboogie so far? Steve: I’d actually say it’s been starting the label, weirdly. We did the club nights for a long time and we did the agency for a long time and they’re kind of on separate tracks. What’s really made the biggest change has been starting the label, because that’s given all the events and things like doing festivals and stages - a lot of which Dave facilitates through his work - a real focus. And a fresh impetus. Dave: Doing the label galvanised everything that we do. And also it takes you from being somebody that’s a recognisable name in Bristol or within a certain band of music, to suddenly a much broader audience. It means that people in Japan can buy your music. Steve: And I think it also marks the difference between just being a promoter and actually being able to take something with you that’s yours, that you’ve created, so that it’s like an identity. I hate using the word brand, but do you know what I mean? Now we’re in quite a fortunate position where we can look at it and go, who are we putting a record out from at the time? Let’s put them on that event, that event, and that event. And the label has made that possible whereas it wasn’t before, it was about booking other acts. Now it’s about booking our acts; pushing them and pushing the label forward. You both still do a lot of DJing. Is that something you’ll continue for a long while? Dave: Hopefully. Steve: I get quite tired quite early these days, so we’ll see about that. Dave: He does the early slots! Steve: No we love DJing. And I think I can safely say for both of us, every year we’re a bit like, oh we’re probably not going to get as many bookings this year, that might be a good thing for our health. But actually, to be honest it doesn’t show any sign of slowing down - it’s amazing. This summer already we’ve got about 5 or 6 festivals, in fact possibly more. Gigs all round Europe... I’m actually off to Cambodia next week. Dave: And then we do a regular thing in Berlin in an amazing club called Zur wilden Renate. We’re back there this month. Steve might say he gets tired but he still wants to do all the gigs. Dave, you’re one half of Team Love (who bring us Love Saves the Day). Is running a festival something you’ve always wanted to do? Yeah, myself and Tom (Paine, who also runs Motion) started off doing similar things at Glastonbury five years ago where we had our own stage. And again, much like everything else we’ve done it’s kind of grown organically. We did the production for See No Evil, and I think that gave us the confidence to do something of
that scale in the city. And I think that the city was really crying out for something since the demise of Ashton Court. There hasn’t really been anything where all the sort of different tribes, or whatever you want to call it, could come together and have a party. It was a combination of timing, good fortune and it was something we always wanted to do. Tell us about the Futureboogie stage at Love Saves... Dave: We are really exited about it. Steve: Dave booked it. It’s really strong! Dave: We’ve been trying to get Todd Terje back for - I think we brought him here in 2006 or 2007 - and he’s one of our favourite DJs and a really top bloke as well. So we’ve been trying to get him back for years, and the planets have aligned and he’s back. His new album is brilliant. It’s everywhere, isn’t it? He’s gone massive. Motor City Drum Ensemble is somebody that we’ve been booking in Bristol for years, it’s great to have him back. And then of course all our family - Crazy P, PBR Street Gang, Christophe and Lukas, and Hackman who’s a new part of the team. What else have you got lined up for the year? Steve: We’re doing a future boogie stage at Lovebox this year and after show party. We’re doing the booking for Garden Festival again this year, which we do every year so that’s a real family affair for us. We’re going back to Renate in Berlin this month and then we’re also playing the next day, they’ve

got an open air called Else which we’re really excited about. Wildnerness Festival, Secret Garden Party. We’ll be back at Motion in November, we’ve got a big show with a really exciting line up for that. Burning Man. Dave: And maybe a tour of Australia. Which will be quite exciting if it happens - it’s quite a big if at the moment. And also we’ve got an old friend of ours Rainer Truby who we used to book when we first started at Seen, probably ten years ago, he’s coming back to play at the Love Inn on May 16th. And any big releases coming up on the Futureboogie label? Steve: Again, the Felix Dickinson EP that we’ve got coming up. We’ve got releases with Mark E, Toby Tobias... Dave: We’ve got a Downtown Party Network release coming. And two or three others coming, fingers crossed, that we probably shouldn’t mention at the moment. Independent shopping in Bristol: Meet the owners... Thanks to schemes like the Bristol Pound and ‘Bristol Independents’, Bristol is a city that breeds a culture of independent shopping. Home to some of the best in the UK, there are dozens of fantastic, one-of-a-kinds for Bristol shoppers to explore. Each month we meet the minds behind the city’s best shops to find out what makes independent shopping in Bristol so brilliant. This month, we spoke to Liza Butcher who owns Made Just So, a gift, home accessories and jewellery boutique in Clifton Village.
Made sits amid the many fantastic independent shops, cafes and restaurants in Clifton Village. Run by the lovely Liza Butcher, Made is not your run-of-the-mill gift shop; if you wander in store, you’ll find a hugely diverse offering with many products you won’t find elsewhere. Browse a refreshing range of gift cards, fine bone china mugs, quirky washbags, purses and accessories, picnic blankets, plus loads more lovely bits and pieces you didn’t realise you needed. There’s also a bountiful selection of prints and artwork, including works from Bristol artists, and a carefully curated collection of jewellery. 102
You can tell that jewellery is a particular love of Liza’s since studying jewellery design at university. Made Just So stocks collections from both new and well established designers, ranging from young and talented new graduates, to the Sophie Hadley necklaces seen in the James Bond films. On top of this, Made also specialise in quality fabrics and run a bespoke lampshade making service. Liza can create the perfect lampshade to suit any room, and as a special treat she is offering BLC readers the chance to win one of her handmade lampshades for their home (details on how to enter below). You’ll have to pardon the cliche, but Made really is the place to find that unique gift. For many of the items you will find in store, Liza is the only stockist in Bristol. Testament to all this is the fact that Made Just So is through to the finals of this year’s The Greats Retail Awards. As Liza tells us, the Greats Awards are a fairly big deal, celebrating gift retailing across the board, from brand new start-ups to the likes of Paperchase and John Lewis. Made are nominated for Best Newcomer, with the finals ceremony taking place this month in London’s Savoy Hotel.
Can you tell us a bit about Made Just So? Everything that we stock is made and designed in the UK or Ireland. So whether it be handmade from start to finish by one single designer or it can be manufactured for them. But everything is made in Britain or Ireland. And we sell really diverse products, so anything from a greetings card, mugs, washbags, to British contemporary jewellery, accessories and things for your home. We also have a lovely range of lampshades which we make ourselves. That’s maybe what your best known for, isn’t it? How does the bespoke lampshade service work? Yeah, we’re quite often known to be referred to as the shop with the lampshades! We can either tailor the size of the lampshades that we do to peoples’ homes, or people can bring fabrics into us and we can make anything. So we can make tiny little shades, I’ve made shades for a lady’s house and they were a
metre and a half wide and really shallow because she had a very large flat but really, really low ceilings so wanted something dramatic, but didn’t want the height. We’ve got fabrics that we work with, or they can bring any of their fabrics in as well. So if they’ve had their home decorated, they can bring their own fabric in to finish off a room. How did you get started with Made Just So? I’ve been in retail since I left university - I studied jewellery design - and I’ve always been creative. I’ve been in retail for fifteen years working for other people and I’ve always wanted to open a shop, and I finally got there two years ago. Do you design any of the jewellery currently? Not at the moment. Our dream is to do much more, at the moment we’re working with a couple of local designers on doing a couple of ranges of our own products, so we’re having meetings, etc. - it’s in the pipeline.
So we’ll look out for a Made Just So range in the near future! Congratulations on making the finals of The Greats Retail Awards (Best Newcomer South and West). What would the award mean to you? We actually got through to the final last year, but we were actually only 12 weeks old then so we were a little bit young to be entering, then we got through to the finals again this year. It’s nice to be recognised against much bigger retailers. The awards pool any gift retailers, so people from John Lewis will be there! It’s nice that what we do is being recognised by someone else. What can customers come in and find in store here? We sell a real diverse range of things for your home and jewellery, things that start at £10 right up to £1500 for a Sophie Harley necklace that was seen in the James Bond films. We’ve also got a whole range of prints, some Bristol art - we’ve lots of local artists in here and screen prints. They start at £12 and go up to around £500. How do you choose the designers you work with? I always go for the gut feeling. I kind of hope that if it really grabs me, then it will grab someone else in the same way. I’m always scouring, looking for things, always on the internet, going to shows and artist trails and things... And we get approached by designers as well. It’s so exciting when we get an email from someone that I haven’t found and we really love their product. What makes Made Just So unique? The fact that everything we do is British-made, that’s a definite stand-out point. And that we sell very small designers who 104
are just starting out, and nurture them when they first start, to really big established designers. We’ve got jewellers like Dower & Hall, who have been jewellers for 25 years and then some recent graduates that maybe finished university last summer. What would you say the best thing is about running an independent shop in Bristol? Bristol is such a creative city. People love independent shops, we are a city of independent shops. People enjoy knowing that money spent locally isn’t going to a big company and people enjoy finding something different - and I hope they can find it here! And what’s specifically great about being based in Clifton Village? I love being up here. It’s like a little hub of independents, it’s really nice. There’s a real feel of independent traders. There’s a real diverse offering from all the traders and you can come and spend a lot of time wandering around, it’s a beautiful place. And it’s lovely to have the Suspension Bridge right on our doorstep. It’s a nice day out, especially now as we’re coming from spring into summer.
