Interview: Al Murray “A plague on all their houses” We talk silent comedy, politics and showing off with The Pub Landlord

This month, Bristol’s comedy fans are treated to staggeringly good, 7 strong line-up featuring Jack Dee, Al Murray, Dara O’Briain, Tony Hawks, Jeremy Hardy, Richard Herring and Jo Caulfield. All seven will be performing free of charge in aid of this year’s ‘Stand-Up for Slapstick 3’ at Colston Hall to raise money for Bristol’s annual silent comedy festival, Slapstick Festival. Celebrating its 10th anniversary last year, the festival was launched by silent film enthusiasts ‘Bristol Silents’ to help keep the love of silent screen comedy alive. Ten years on, it’s now the biggest event of its kind in Britain and recognised internationally as one of the top comedy film festivals in the world, with top comedians from across the globe descending on Bristol each January for a three-day programme of vintage comedy spread across the city’s participating venues: Arnolfini, Bristol Old Vic, Colston Hall, Watershed and St George’s Bristol. The festival is run almost entirely by volunteers and its core funding comes directly from these charity events. Slapstick festival director Chris Daniels says: “Even though Slapstick is hugely popular in Bristol and far beyond, it is a fact that our Stand Up For Slapstick fund- raisers are what keep the festival running, now that public funding is so hard to win. So it is truly magnificent that so many top-flight comedians want to help us out by appearing free of charge at our benefit event.” The evening is hosted by Perrier Award winning comedian Al Murray, performing his obnoxious alter-ego ‘Pub Landlord’. We spoke to the comic about why it’s so important to keep the Bristol festival “going and growing”... Why is it important to you to keep the annual Slapstick Festival going? I grew up on slapstick comedy. My introduction to comedy as a kid was Laurel and Hardy on BBC 2 in the mornings on school holiday. It’s the first comedy, Slapstick. It’s the thing before word-plays, or even fart gags, and I’m a huge fan of it. How is the silent comedy genre still relevant today? In the modern world everything is crowded out and there’s always something else, the novelty of new things always coming along... But I think Slapstick is probably as old as being able to walk, because it involves falling over! So of course it needs preserving and keeping alive, because it’s part of a deeper tradition. You were educated at Oxbridge. Why did you decide to go into stand-up comedy rather than something more traditionally academic? Two reasons, first is I’m a show-off. The second reason is when I finished at uni I’d been doing exams since I was 9 and they’re always someone else’s tests. And I wanted to do something where I could find out if I was good at something completely on my own terms. And stand-up was exactly that. Because there are no auditions - you stand up in front of an audience and find out if you’re good enough.

You’re a bit of a comedy regular in Bristol. A favourite at The Comedy Box at Hen and Chicken and you’re back again next month to headline Bristol Comedy Garden in Queen Square. Where’s your favourite place in Bristol to get a pint? The last place I went drinking in Bristol was the Bavarian Beerhouse. I like it there - it was fun. The Pub Landlord is quite different to your own character as we’ve seen you on your other shows like 7 Day Sunday and appearances on QI. Where does the character come from? He came about by accident. I came up with it on the spur of the moment at a gig, but he developed and changed, and in a weird way he comes from himself and having to perform it. I’ve not done the process of having to figure out his middle name or anything. But the jokes are funny. You’ve said before that comedians should lampoon politics, not champion it. Is The Pub Landlord anti-nationalist at all, or are you just taking the piss? Well I’m taking the piss out of everything I can get my hands on. A plague on all their houses is what I always think is the comedian’s role, to knock everyone in an equal way. The Pub Landlord character has been going for 20 years now. Few comedy characters have endured as long and remained so popular. Why do you think the Pub Landlord is so successful? Because I haven’t given up! Seriously, the first Edinburgh I did the act, people said “well, what are you going to do next year?” I said, “I’m going to write another show but with the same character because he works really well.” It seems to me that it’s a bottomless pit. Because he’s really archetypical, he’s not meant to be too specific. It’s not as though he doesn’t have currency as the years go by. I thinks it’s quite interesting that right now in politics we have a bloke who likes posing with a pint who thinks he knows what he’s doing - that can’t be a coincidence! Do you ever get into trouble from people who don’t realise it’s a character? Well I think by not realising it’s a character it’s really their problem rather than mine! That’s the simplest way of putting it. I mean, it’s so blindingly obvious and also it’s happening on a stage. It can’t be real. I’m always a little perplexed by the idea that you have to tell the truth on stage. I think you have to be truthful, but I don’t know that you have to tell the truth. Tell the big lie, rather than the little ones. You’ve announced a brand new touring show to celebrate your 20th Anniversary ‘One Man One Guvner, 20 Years at the Lager Top.’ What’s the show about? It’s about not wanting to offend anyone. It’s about the state of politics in our country today. It’s about getting old. It’s about envying the young. It’s about a load of stuff. And finally, there are still a few tickets left for the Stand Up for Slapstick Fundraiser. Can you tell our readers why they should come along? ‘Cause it’s an amazing bill, an incredible bill. It’s a brilliant cause. And because everyone on it is really, really funny. Tickets available from www.colstonhall.org. £29.56 incl. booking fee 3rd June, Colston Hall All proceeds go to Slapstick Festival Interview by Rachel Morris www.slapstick.org.uk bristolsilents.org.uk al-murray.com

Interview: Paolo Nutini Ahead of his hotly anticipated open-air gig at Bristol’s Harbourside (all 5,000 tickets sold out in less than three hours). Paolo Nutini talks about his new No 1 album ‘Caustic Love’, the fastest-selling record of this year...

There really is no one quite like Paolo Nutini. Any other artist, coming off the back of a 2 million-selling album in the careerchanging Sunny Side Up and hugely successful tours around the world, would head straight back to the studio to get the next album out as quickly as possible to maintain momentum. But then, Paolo doesn’t do anything just because it’s expected of him. So it’s only now, five years on, that sensational No 1 album Caustic Love is about to take the Scots singer to a whole new level of global acclaim. A seemingly endless wait for fans, his management and Atlantic Records... but for Paolo, it was just about going home for a while. He said: “It never felt like I was consciously doing anything but living my life. People were saying I disappeared or I was on hiatus, asking was I OK. I was fine. I could just see everything changing. I used to go home and everyone was studying at uni so I had a bit more time with friends and things,

they were all coming to the end of that where they’d be getting jobs and wouldn’t have as much time. So I was determined to go and try and make the most of the time they had, just to sit about and waste afternoons during the week, have three night weekends, those things that now have changed quite a lot. I was trying to catch up on my youth a little bit in a way too. Just growing up, really.” Paolo felt it was vital that he step back from the music industry and focus on his own life, allowing himself time to grow up and find new inspiration. The demands of life on the road, going from bus to hotel to venue day after day, week after week, month after month, had left him drained and in need of a break from it all. “I knew I had to go give myself some time to experience things I could write about, put things into perspective how I was feeling. I was purposefully trying to break down every kind of 9

machine that was moving or that was alive at that point around me because I wasn’t interested in being part of it. I had ideas of what I wanted to do, I just found lyrically I wasn’t doing so much. I’d come out of a tour and had been in a way of life - it had become routine. My experiences weren’t inspiring the best songs to my ear, the best lyrics, it certainly wasn’t coming out freely. I did a bit of travel; going back to places I went to but only really saw maybe a street on the way to the gig. Then among that I was just trying to be around for people at home, my parents, and my grandmother, just being there in case anything needed doing. I suppose in a weird way I was trying to get out of people’s minds as well, especially going back home. In my head I thought the longer I stayed out of the way, the less people would care.” At various points Paolo ventured into rehearsal rooms or studios to try out new ideas, working initially with his incredible band The Vipers, then heading off to explore ideas with fresh input from outsiders. Caustic Love began its journey in a tiny rehearsal room in Glasgow, growing and taking shape with the help of collaborators like Leo Abrahams and Dani Castelar in London, Valencia and Los Angeles. “There have been stages where people thought I had a record. I was getting prodded about what was happening, people were wondering what I was doing. I wanted to do what I was doing and any time anyone got wind of me approaching a studio or anything like that they were determined, the label saying they’d pay for me to go in, support me. To be frank I didn’t really need it. When you’re covering it off your own back you’re more modest with the studios you go to, you condense it. It’s not a great thing having someone throw tons of money at you and say give us it whenever. Things slip through the net. I like it when I don’t have to check in and out every day, I can just do what I do. First we had some demos we recorded in rehearsal rooms in Glasgow, we had a wee set up. We recorded actual tracks with The Vipers there, that was the first thought. On the back of that I went and had other stuff and ideas We got a guy, Leo Abrahams, who I worked with on the John Martin tribute record. We spoke at that point about doing something

10

with him in the producer role, he’s a very talented musician all round. He’s got everything in his arsenal. He came in and we started adapting some other ideas I had. He brought more experience in that field, he engineered for Eno and big records, he worked with some great people. I learned a lot from him. Then we went into another recording situation and knocked out a few more songs but this time it was just me and him playing, I stepped out of the band situation. I worked with Dani Castelar, I met him on the second album as he was the engineer at the studios. He co-produced Caustic Love and without him I wouldn’t have done any of it. The period of time with Leo made an imprint on a couple of tracks that survived. I learned from him about how to add a little bit of sanity and routine to everything which was really nice rather than being so sporadic. I was phoning people at four in the morning saying ‘I’ve got an idea, let’s get in there, we need to do it now’. That can only last so long.” Clearly this album is the result of a long process, one in which Paolo has thrown caution to the wind and gone with whatever felt right at the time. The results speak for themselves. Caustic Love is the most daring record yet from an artist already renowned for taking risks and confounding expectations. In the early stages of the writing and recording process, Paolo appeared to be heading in a much rockier direction. But the stunningly soulful sound of the album is the work of an artist on incredible form and at the absolute peak of his powers - it sounds like the album Paolo was always destined to make. Yet he insists there’s much more to come - he just has to find the right producer to allow him to explore the multitude of musical ideas he wants to realise. “I had all these three chord punk ideas, I was listening to a lot of post punk stuff, we covered Amazorblades’ Common Truth, things like the Buzzcocks. I knew some of their stuff but I immersed myself in it and absolutely loved it. It wasn’t the Sex Pistols... I look at a band like that and know I’m never going to be that. I am not steeped in all that angst, I’m never going to be Sid Vicious, but a Buzzcock doesn’t seem so alien. It’s melodic but ballsy and really straightforward and bold. I thought it was a contrast to a lot of the approach I take on record. It’s the stages. That’s why I’m crying out for a producer who can harness the different shades of my ideas, that can see what I’m doing, harness it and put a focus on it.What happens now is I’m trying to unlock something and it maybe doesn’t happen right away so I get frustrated and move on. Maybe that frustration spawns another thing, a whole new thread, which leads me down another way. Sometimes when you get frustrated your back is against the wall and you come out fighting at your best and knock out three songs in as many days.” Paolo insists the soulful sound of Caustic Love was never planned in any way - soul music was never his great inspiration or what he aspired to. Yet the raw, painfully emotive sound of One Day, Iron Sky, Looking For Something and Better Man can be described in no other way. There’s the edgy jazz-funk of Diana, the funked pop genius of Scream (Funk My Life Up), the raw grit of Cherry Blossom and the thrillingly daring electrofunk of Fashion. The album, all of it, is music from the depths of his soul, which can’t fail to have an impact on the coldest of hearts. And that, surely, is what soul is all about. He said: “Musically, everything is a product of the subconscious. Of course I love soul but I can’t say that is what plays mostly on my earphones, not what I get lost to even in the last few years. If soul is the word for the album, I don’t know. If you look at the songs I suppose you would consider that to be the genre. You realise what I am singing about, you realise there is a desperation there, an angst and a passion that is not really passive. It’s when I go into my deepest thoughts and feelings, that’s when a soul song comes out. When I am maybe feeling

pain, something is hurting, feeling at my most desperate. That’s when soul comes out. All the songs start on an acoustic guitar, the chords and that, then when you’ve signed off the bottom of the lyric sheet, that’s when it can then become something else because when you step up to the mic to record it all just comes out. That’s when you realise how to accompany it and complement it. I’ve never said, ‘right let’s do a soul song, let’s do this or that’, it’s just how it comes out. You think of all these amazing tyrannical old soul singers, musicians and writers, if I am setting out my stall to try and do that and consciously beat that, that’s fickle. I don’t know how that could ever last. When I am talking about getting more music out and showing all my shades, it will hopefully explain to people what I have been doing all this time in songs and music. For me, music has always been that. It’s a way to communicate feelings I can’t express, to let everything out. I like to go into my head. I see a lot of images when I think about it, when I hear songs I write. When I’m working on a song, it comes with pictures, it’s like a film, it has scenes. That’s how it comes together for me and grows. At the best of times I can detach and get sucked into the situation and imagining it. When I hear a synth I could see a unicorn or for drums I can see getting punched in the face. Then I go on to little characters.”

With this stellar album unleashed upon the world, Paolo is understandably enthusiastic about the months and years ahead. “It’s exciting, it’s funny, talking about it is the thing I probably do worst. I’ve never been great explaining myself. It’s a mixed bag of everything. Staring at all the fun that can come, the adventures ahead. It’s at the stage where it all seems hypothetical. Once we get into the swing I’m sure it will feel a lot more natural again. Ideally I want to get this album out, tour, not for three years and all that, squeezing every last song out of it, no. I want to do it, tour it, let people who want to hear it hear it and then go in and record the next one. My phone, my voice memos, my little laptop demos are building up again.” So it seems we may not have to wait five years for the NEXT album. But with Paolo you just never quite know what to expect.

Bright Young Things... St George’s has a long history of championing young talent, whether it be through showcase recitals by up and coming classical artists or by offering a platform (quite literally) for some of the region’s brightest acoustic performers. We’re thrilled to be welcoming one of classical music’s hottest young faces this month as guitarist Miloš Karadaglic makes his St George’s debut.

W

ith two albums currently in the Top Ten classical chart, the 31 year old Montenegro-born musician is already well established after a very swift rise to fame. Catapulted from the war-torn country of his youth to the Royal Academy of Music and, ultimately, the world’s leading concert halls, Miloš is now hailed by fans and critics for his brilliant technique and transcendent musicality. Last month he teamed up with Alison Balson to co-host the BBC Young Musician of the Year broadcasts on BBC Four.

This debut appearance at St George’s sees him perform music from his latest album ‘Arunjuez’, including captivating works by Rodrigo, De Falla and Bach, shining new light and emotion on the humble guitar. Don’t miss this exciting solo performance.

Come and have your St George’s moment. Visit our website and sign up for email newsletters today. Photo of Miloš: © Margaret Malandruccolo/DG courtesy of Deutsche Grammophon

Featured artist - Jessa Fairbrother Artist Jessa Fairbrother uses photography to make images exploring nostalgia and loss. Based at Jamaica Street Studios on Stokes Croft, she frequently employs long film exposures and self-portraiture, or embellishes and destroys prints after they have been made. “My work is about the emotional life we lead in our heads – I am influenced by how we construct narratives as we go along, informed by the past, and how yearning for it feeds into future experiences. I am interested in how this becomes visible in everyday interactions and I often ‘perform’ within the still image, or create photographic objects with a material relationship to its subject. ”

Article by: James Koch Photography: Kamina Walton

Jessa is the recipient of bursaries and honourable mentions in the UK, Europe and Canada. Her work is published nationally and internationally, and held in the permanent collection of the NHS. She was included in the 161st Open Exhibition at the RWA and will be showing new images from The Sleeping Room at Jamaica Street Open Studios in June (more info on page 43) . Jessa was a journalist while developing her artistic career and continues to write about photography, “I’m currently interviewing participants in Bristol’s first Photobook Festival, which takes place in June”, she says. “It’s been great to write about so many established and emerging photographers.”

Interview: George Ezra With his debut album ‘Wanted on Voyage’ set for release this month, Bristol-based musician George Ezra returns to the city that helped him find his voice for two intimate gigs.

George Ezra moved to Bristol aged just 17 to study at Bristol Institution of Modern Music. He quickly made a name for himself on the Bristol music circuit, with a residency night at The Gallimaufry (page 83) and regular gigs across the city. But it was his performance for YouTube channel Bristol Couch that was the tipping point for George. A friend of his sister’s put him in touch with the project, devised to capture intimate performances from rising musicians at characteristic locations around the city (look out for the inflatable red couch!). His haunting performance of Angry Hill for Bristol Couch pricked the ears of Columbia Records, and at 18 he was signed to the mega label. Since then, George has risen steadily to his position as one of pop’s most talked about new artists, playing the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury last year and returning to the festival line-up this year on the John Peel Stage. His booming, bluesy voice is distinct of a young artist who grew up listening to the likes of Lead Belly and Robert Johnson. Permeated with the indie-pop of his own day from bands like Arctic Monkeys and Vampire Weekend, this has helped George create his own brand of “blues, country and folk-infused pop”. Here is an artist not afraid to do things his own way. He doesn’t try and shy away from the pop-labelled element of his music like other guitar-brandishing, emerging male artists might. In fact, he’s fascinated by Miley Cyrus he tells us. 52

Just back from his first ever headline tour, which completely sold-out for all but one date, George took some time to catch up with us before he kicks off his next UK tour this month; starting right here in Bristol. Catch him at Exchange on 4th June and Fiddlers Club on 5th June. We loved your recent performance on Later with Jools Holland. What was that experience like for you? Amazing. I’m not really someone who gets massively nervous before things but I definitely did before that. But it was lovely, they had a comedian compere just before it all kicked off that just made everyone so relaxed and made everyone involved feel really comfortable. So by the time I got up to do it, I felt really at home. Obviously playing Jools Holland is a fairly big deal, what do you hope your next big milestone will be? That’s the first thing I’ve done that I always used to think as a kid, when you do that, something’s going right. So I don’t know really - maybe do Jools again! Aside from that, what’s been your biggest moment to date? I used to do the residency nights in Bristol at The Gallimaufry and even though they weren’t like, “wow - I can’t believe this is happening”, I always used to feel really lucky that I was part of

that because of the atmosphere in there. And also this tour that I’ve just done, my first headline tour, the whole thing was soldout but one gig so that was like, “Wow! This is cool.” You’ve been added ‘Ones to Watch’ lists from the likes of Xfm, iTunes & MTV, as well as Top 5 in BBC’s ‘Sound of 2014’. Does that add a certain amount of pressure? No, do you know what? It didn’t at all. I think it does to a lot of people, but to be honest I didn’t even know that Sound of 2014 actually existed so when I got told I just thought it was cool. I was 5th and it’s great because it means that my name was put into a lot of people’s heads. But no, I don’t feel pressure at all. I think you have to dumb things down and I just have to remind myself that I’m lucky enough to write songs and perform them and either it goes well or it doesn’t. You moved to Bristol at 17 to pursue your music career. How much do you think being in Bristol help you progress as a musician? I moved here to study at BIMM (Bristol Institute of Modern Music) and yeah, Bristol played a huge part in me evolving as a musician, definitely. But I don’t think it was necessarily just because it was Bristol, I think it was because I was at an age where it’s the first time I moved out by myself and there’s a lot that comes with that. The freedom and also then Bristol being such a.... I don’t know what it is, I can never put my finger on what it is that Bristol has. I always find it hard to describe Bristol to people who haven’t been because you don’t want to sound corny, but it’s just a very relaxed place. I still live in Bristol, I still have a little flat because I just love it! And I feel at home in Bristol. The nicest thing is when you get the train into Bristol it feels like everyone is aware that they’re happy to be there. And they’re aware that they’re lucky to live in a place like Bristol. Can you tell us about your experience with Bristol Couch? Bristol Couch was a YouTube channel and a friend of my sister put me in touch with them. And I was still very early doors,

I was just starting to get myself busy in Bristol. So I thought, yeah I’ll give it a go. You can watch it back and it’s like someone is holding a gun on me, I was so nervous about the whole ordeal. But what a great thing that they were doing! I ended up doing two videos with them. I still appreciate them helping me out a lot, because they did help me - those videos are kind of what got other people’s attention. I owe them a big thank you. Have you any advice for other young musicians in Bristol trying to make it? I think what happened with me is that when I got there I realised that unless I got busy, unless I started gigging and trying things out, then nothing was going to happen. Bristol is perfect - for anyone in Bristol there’s no excuse really ‘cause there’s three open mic nights on any one night. You’re spoilt for choice. And I think it’s easy when you’re starting out to make excuses to not do stuff, but at the end of the day you are only jeapordising yourself. Budapest and Cassy O are insanely catchy. What’s your songwriting process? It’s all over the shop. I fill up notebooks of things that I’m seeing and write down people that I’m meeting and characters, and just get as many notes down as possible. And then I dunno, I just pick up a guitar and try bits out on different things and then scrap ideas and sing the same lyrics to a different melody, and I just keep going until you kind of realise, “Oh, that feels at home there.” These lyrics feel at home with this melody and this melody feels at home on these guitar chords. Also, it’s got to be fun to sing. Do you know what I mean? Unless I enjoy singing it, I’m not going to do it. You have to be quite selfish. When you’re making music, it’s for you. If you’re not happy with it, if you’re not enjoying it, then something’s wrong. And I had to take the same approach when I was recording the album. You have to be selfish and it has to sound how you wanted it to sound. And once you’ve done that, then you have to hope that other people are going to enjoy it. 53

Your music has been described as “blues, country and folkinfused pop.” Where do you draw your sound from? It’s a strange one because whenever somebody says punk-pop, I think no, no, no, those things don’t go together. Or if someone says bluesy-pop, I’m like, no, you can’t have blues pop music. But I’ve found myself in this weird place where I guess that is what I’m doing. I grew up listening to a lot of male American singer-songwriters. I was listing to a lot of Tom Waits, Woodie Guthrie and Paul Simon and Bob Dylan. And once you listen to them you find all these other people like Lead Belly and Robert Johnson and different blues singers. While all that was going on and I was finding that for myself, I didn’t really have anyone else my age that was enjoying it with me at school. But it didn’t matter, I had headphones - they didn’t have to hear it. Then I must have been 13/14 when Arctic Monkeys came out and Vampire Weekend were just starting out, amazing bands like that. The Cribs as well, I love The Cribs. And that’s part of what I grew up listening to as well, so you find that these things do marry. But I’ve always loved pop music and I think even more so in the last two years. I’ve started really started listening to Graceland by Paul Simon in a different way. Not taking it apart, but thinking about what I was listening to a bit more, and it’s just a massive pop album. The difference is it’s cool. I think British pop music especially, well what was in our charts, it got a bit crap about two years ago. Not anything in particular that really insulted me or anything like that, but I think it got a bit uninspiring. But I think there’s some great pop music knocking about at the moment. It’s getting fun again. Who do you like at the moment? Radio 1 are backing a band called Royal Blood a lot and I think they’re fantastic. And again, Vampire Weekend on the tail end of last year released another great album. Bombay Bicycle Club have just brought out another great album. And I must admit, I’m kind of fascinated by this whole Miley Cyrus thing. I had never paid attention really to how things explode. And she was the first time that I’ve actually watched something go from being not that big - if I’m perfectly honest I had no idea who she was - and then it just went massive. And I find that fascinating. Also the people she writes her songs with are some of the best songwriters in the world, so the songs structurally and melodically - I think they’re great! Your debut album Wanted on Voyage is due next month. What can you tell us about the album?

It’s hard to believe you’re just turning 21 years old with a mature singing voice like yours. Is that how you’ve always sung or is that something you’ve developed from what you’ve listened to? Completely! I couldn’t sing and then when I was getting into all these blues artists I thought, I wonder if I try and sing like that I’ll be able to sing. And it was the easiest thing for me. You know, I tried it and I could do it. I remember when I first found out I could sing and I loved it. I love doing it. It’s a good feeling. But then my voice has got a lot stronger over the years. I think it used to be a lot more shouty when I was in bands. Do you spend much time in Bristol still? Yeah, I made my New Years resolution to spend any free time I had in Bristol. And that’s going really well. The only thing is, I don’t really get that much free time! But when I do, I do spend it in Bristol. Every time I wake up in my bed in Bristol, I’m always like, ‘Ah!’ You know when you don’t realise where you are at first? Then I get up all excited, have a shower, and then I just walk. It’s about a 35/40 minute walk for me to get into the centre of town, then I walk up to Rise Records and spend my pocket money on CDs, and go and visit some friends. It’s lovely now because Bristol is only ever time off for me. It’s never work, which is lovely. But I also find that really when you get time off, all you want to do is relax. It normally works out that I get two days off, so often the first day I’ll get quite drunk with my friends and the second day I’ll pop down to Lush and get a bath bomb and watch Gogglebox! You’re playing two gigs in Bristol next month. What have you got in store for us? Yeah that’s with the band. I’ve only ever done one gig with the band and I’ve got another one tonight to try it out. So they’ll pretty much be the first gigs with the band. I think I’ll probably put a disclaimer out when I first get up there! But saying that, I think it’s going to be great fun. I’ve never played The Exchange before, so that will be good. And finally, what does your plan for the future look like? I don’t think there is one. If I’m lucky enough to keep writing and recording and performing music for as long as I can then that’s amazing. But I’m also very aware that these things come around and they can disappear again, so I’m just enjoying it while I can. I think as long as I keep putting my best into it then that’s all I can do. I don’t know much about the future at all really... We’ll see!

Most of the songs that are on the first two EPs and the album came from a trip I took around Europe. I went interrailing by myself and I was writing a lot in my notebook, so when I came back I had all these stories. So that’s where the majority of the album comes from. I think you can hear that it’s kind of almost European-sounding. It’s got some sort of travelling pace to it. The whole idea of it being called Wanted on Voyage is because ‘wanted on voyage’ used to be put onto people’s luggage when they were boarding ships. It would be put on your hand luggage to show that you wanted that item on your person during the journey and I loved that idea. I loved the idea of people travelling while listening to an album that was written while someone was travelling, and then wanting it to be on their journeys. Also it’s on Paddington Bear’s suitcase and I love Paddington Bear! But sound wise, it’s a very summery sounding album. I hope that if it’s going to be the soundtrack to anyone’s time, it’s their time in the summer. I think it’s fitting for that. We’re releasing it at the end of June which is also my birthday month, so I’m going to have a big old celebration. Interview by Rachel Morris // Photographer - Robert Blackham

Independent shopping in Bristol: Meet the owners... Thanks to schemes like the Bristol Pound and ‘Bristol Independents’, Bristol is a city that breeds a culture of independent shopping. Home to some of the best independent shops in the UK, there are dozens of fantastic, one-of-a-kinds for Bristol shoppers to explore. Each month we meet the minds behind the city’s best shops to find out what makes independent shopping in Bristol so brilliant. This month, we spoke to Clare Serjeant who owns Fox + Feather, a quirky clothing and accessories store on Gloucester Road.

You can find Fox + Feather on Bristol’s famed Gloucester Road, proudly flying the flag for independents as the longest stretch of independent shops in the UK. On stepping into the store you’ll immediately scold yourself for not having found it sooner. It’s a treasure trove of cool, quirky clothing and accessories for men and women at a really decent price. And for the majority of things in store, Fox + Feather is the only place you’ll find it in Bristol, so chances are you won’t be bumping into anyone with the same outfit as you. 104

Fox + Feather was set up as an alternative to high street chains to give shoppers a chance to find something a little bit different but within the same price points, Clare tells us. Browse pretty summer dresses and skirts, illustrated tees, jeans, shoes, hats and accessories more from sought-after brands like Louche and Hymn, as well as their own label ‘Ragged Robin’. You’ll also find unexpected little bits like kitsch notebooks, bookmarks or loose leaf tea dotted around the shop. The shop itself is very cool, styled out with vintage furniture and reclaimed wooden boards. There’s a nice, laid-back vibe in store and Clare chats happily with customers as they come in. They are clearly doing something right, as just two years on from opening, Fox + Feather was awarded Best New Business at the illustrious Drapers Independents Awards (and won ‘highly commended’ the year before).

Can you tell us a bit about Fox + Feather? We opened in March 2012. We started off just as womenswear and our aim was to create an alternative to high street stores, so it would give people a reason not to have to go to all the chain stores, but still be within those price points. Then last year we added the menswear, and that’s going really well. We are daywear mainly, with a little bit of party/ weekend stuff.

throughout the UK. And I’ve also worked as an arial manager. So basically I’ve always worked in retail and it got to a point where I could see a gap in the market - especially on this stretch in Bristol - and I thought, ‘I need to do this for myself’. We waited for ages for the right spot to come up and I finally found this place and went for it.

Last year we won ‘Best New Business of the Year’ from Drapers, which is a big industry award! We were really impressed. We actually got highly commended the year before, but we had only been trading for under a year.

But I was eight months pregnant when we opened here. I left a really comfortable well-paid job with maternity pay etc, left all that. Everyone thought I was insane! But it has definitely been worth it.

What’s your background?

What can customers expect to find in store?

My background is in fashion retail. I’ve done a few different things; I did visual merchandising where I looked after 32 stores in the UK, so I travelled a lot! I’ve also worked as I buyer. I was an accessories buyer for a chain that had eleven stores

Quirky prints at a really good price point. In fact, quirky for men and women. Our best- selling men’s item has been a jumper with a lobster on it. Pretty summer dresses for girls, and little bits of jewellery for like, £10.

How would you describe the style of Fox + Feather? Laid-back. It’s all got a bit of a vintage twist to it. A lot of the clothes we do are based on classic vintage styles that have

You’re situated on the longest stretch of independent stores in the UK. What’s the best thing about running an independent shop on Gloucester Road?

have in store.

I think just having the chance to get to know so many amazing people on this stretch and the crazy characters that that live around here! And the really good community spirit that we have between all the independents working here. We’re all striving to make this still a successful thing here.

Is there a story behind the name?

And what’s your favourite thing about Gloucester Road?

At the time we had just moved to a new house where there were

On a sunny day when there’s that real feeling of community. We’ve got a bar opposite and you can hear people sitting outside drinking beers in the sunshine. And also, out of anywhere I’ve ever worked, we’ve never, ever had any sort of trouble. We’ve never had a problem from anyone - no matter how drunk they get! It’s always a really good vibe.

been re-done and modernised. And it’s the same with the shop fit. We used vintage bits of furniture or reclaimed scaffold planks to kind of bring that same vibe into the shop fit as we

loads of baby foxes in the garden and they kept killing all the birds. All the time! So our garden was full of foxes and feathers and it came from that. What makes Fox + Feather unique? We have our own brand which we started up and sell in-store called ‘Ragged Robin’. We started out working with a local illustrator to produce a range of t-shirts to sell in store, but it was so successful that we started getting other stores wanting the range and so we started the label. It’s now stocked in Paris, Berlin and Barcelona, but we’re the only place in Bristol that stocks it. We’re really hoping to grow that side of the business. 106
