Featured Artist Bristol artist ‘Fuller’ has unveiled his latest piece: a huge scale map of Bristol entirely hand-drawn in black ink over the course of three and a half years. Fuller says he became obsessed with maps when he was in the Boys Scouts, “All the dib dib dob got me hooked on maps and understanding how people relate to and depend on their environments.”

Interview: Blondie IIconic punk rock band Blondie mark their 40 year anniversary with double-disk package, Blondie 4(0) Ever including a greatest hits collection and brand new album, Ghosts of Download. Undeniably one of the most trailblazing and influential bands of our time, Blondie have sold over forty million albums worldwide. In 2006 they were inducted into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame and this year they received NME’s Godlike Genius Award. Blondie were pioneers of the 1970s new wave scene and came up in the New York City club scene around other iconic punk figures like The Ramones and Talking Heads. However, none received as much commercial success as Blondie who exploded with ‘Heart of Glass’ in 1979. The song catapulted them to superstardom and the world fell in love with Debbie Harry, who still today remains the most iconic front woman of all time. In the years following they released hit after hit including, ‘One Way or Another’, ‘Atomic’, ‘Call Me’, the reggae-infused ‘The Tide is High’ and rap flavoured ‘Rapture’. Blondie were the first to really experiment with genre blending in their music, which included punk rock, disco, hip-hop, reggae and rap. ‘Rapture’ was the first ever song featuring rapping to reach number one in the US charts. They were true innovators and their influence helped shape and continues to inform the worlds of music, fashion and art. Almost as famous as the band itself, is the relationship between founding members Debbie Harry and Chris Stein. Their relationship was one that was intense and occasionally tumultuous, together they battled lawsuits, heroin addiction (later going to rehab together), and serious illness when

Chris was diagnosed with a rare life-threatening autoimmune disease. Debbie put her career on hold for four years to help nurse him back to health. The pair eventually broke up but they continued to work together and Blondie made a come back with ‘Maria’ in 1999. Today Chris and Debbie remain very close friends. Over the last four decades, Blondie has become and still remains a true national treasure. Their show at Glastonbury this summer drew the biggest crowd seen at the second stage in 20 years. We got to speak to Chris Stein about the history of Blondie, their new album and worldwide tour before they arrive in Bristol for a show at the O2 Academy this month. Blondie created the idea of a cross-over, blending genres from punk rock, to disco and ska, and brought the first rap song to the charts with ‘Rapture’. Were you trying to break new ground or did you simply like a lot of different stuff? The latter. The whole thing has always been very do-it-yourself and not planned out. There’s no great scheme involved, it’s just what we like. And that sort of translates. We think about things that people will like, but that’s about the extent of it. It’s not that manipulative and we try to not copy trends too much. I’m influenced by lots of pop music, certainly, I like a lot of electronic stuff that’s going on. It becomes an influence, but it’s not so much to do what everybody else is doing, but to do whatever you’re enjoying listening to now.

You can definitely hear that electronic influence in the new album. Yeah, all that stuff. Computers are fun to work with. What other genres are you playing with at the moment? A lot of people are saying world music... Yeah, Latin music. I’ve been really into Latin music for the last 4/5 years, but more the modern Latin stuff than salsa and the old school stuff. There is a great electronica scene there at the moment, reggaeton and cumbia and all that stuff. You’re often thought of as the musical brains behind of the band and Debbie, the image. Is that fair do you think? Yes and no. I mean, everybody contributes. Right now we have Matt who’s our keyboard guy, he’s a little younger but he’s a really great writer and what he’s doing helps shape the sound of what’s going on, certainly. Do you have an all time favourite Blondie song? Not really. I used to be more enthusiastic about current stuff, whatever the newest stuff is. But the older stuff has all this emotional content and when we do the shows the audience reaction helps us. People always ask us, ‘how can you play the same thing thousands of times?’ But it’s based on the response. When everybody gets excited, then it’s exciting. UK audiences fell in love with Blondie in the 80s and there was an almost Beatles- esque mania surrounding you. Why do you think you were such a hit in the UK? I don’t know. I put it down to the ‘Lolita Effect’. People define Lolita, besides the nasty aspects of it, as ‘young America seduces old Europe’. We also had a British record company, Chrysalis, which helped. They started out with Jethro Tull and we were there first, sort of, sling into modernity. Debbie is still credited as the most iconic female front woman of all time. What is it about Debbie Harry that captured everybody’s imaginations, do you think? Thanks, I’ll tell her! I think it’s partially because there’s always been this kind of cult phenomena and

it’s always been a bit underground. You know, if Debbie had made it to crazy Madonna status or something it might have been a little different. But also she’s a smart, nice person. And I think that comes across with how she is. Your relationship with Debbie has been almost as famous as the band, and you could say as important with her famously quitting music for a few years to stay by your side when you were ill. How’s your relationship now? We’re very close. She’s a good friend. It’s been a long time. There have been a lot of troubles within the band in the past, with ex-members even bringing lawsuits against the band. You’ve said before that this is what makes Blondie, the different characters and tensions. How so? Now it’s pretty smooth, the band situation. But you know, there’s always tensions in bands. It’s just part of the nature of it. In work environments when you have a group of people, there’s always going to be some kind of tension. Just maybe it makes you work harder and try to keep going forward against odds, or against the tide a little bit, as it were. When people think of Blondie the band, they tend to think of you and Debbie, with the other members maybe falling by the wayside, even some members who played in the band for over a decade and even to an extent Clem. Does that cause tensions within the group? Yes and no. Clem is pretty respected and he’s working all the time. He’s much more out living the dream of Rock n’ Roll. Much more than me. I always want to get him on a quiz show answering questions about music, ‘cause he fucking knows everything. It’s crazy. He just lives and breathes music, and he knows everybody in the music industry. So he’s in a different place than I am with that kind of stuff. Obviously you’ve been going for 40 years now and your latest album Ghosts of Download charted as a top 20 UK album. Why do you think has Blondie is still so popular after all these years? I don’t know, the UK fans are great. When we do shows in the UK there’s always a big demographic. There’s a wide spread of ages and people bringing their children to see the shows. It’s always very gratifying.

It was great to have you over for Glastonbury. How was playing the festival? Glastonbury was awesome. They said it was the most people at the second stage where we were for 20 years. Many of them partially because Skrillex was closing the show, but you know, it was still really great. I think you’re being modest. (laughs) It was awesome. Can you tell us a bit about the new album, Ghosts of Download? We’ve been doing a bunch of the songs in the show and they seem to integrate well with the old stuff. The fans are very accepting of them and enjoying a lot of the stuff. The touring of the live show and the recording situation were really different. With the record, nobody in the band was in the same place at the same time, it was all done by sending files back and forth. A lot of people work like that nowadays, but it’s very different than how we used to do stuff. Again, I really enjoyed working with the computers. Every track on the record has some little bit of programming I did on it. I did much less guitar playing than programming, which is also a lot of work but it’s a very different type of approach than playing a live instrument. It’s more like painting or something. There’s a pallet of sounds and you’re putting stuff together. So can we expect a mix of old and new stuff at your show at the O2 Academy Bristol this month? We’re looking forward to being back, we must have been a lot of times there. Yeah we’re doing a lot of the new stuff, but again, it seems to work well with the old stuff and people are enjoying it

Bristol International Balloon Fiesta Over 150 hot air balloons will take off from Ashton Court Estate at dawn and light up the skies at night with 6am and 6pm ascents, plus the now famous Nightglow at 9pm on Thursday 8th and Saturday 10th August, to a backdrop of spectacular fireworks. Four days of extravagant hot-air balloon displays with half a million visitors gathering at Ashton Court to watch balloons lift off over the City. Entertainment includes fairground rides, delicious food stalls and bars, face painting and acoustic music areas. And, for the first time in the event’s 35 year history, organisers will offer an official Bristol International Balloon Fiesta campsite.

Redfest Redfest is a free community arts festival for the communities of East Bristol including Redfield, St George, Whitehall, Easton, Lawrence Hill, Barton Hill, Greenbank and beyond. The festival is a not for profit organisation run entirely by a dedicated and team of volunteers. The main event in St George Park takes place on the first Saturday of August, with a main stage, kids village, cabaret tent, acoustic tent, market and catering stalls. There will also be loads of fringe events in the lead up to the event, with a number of local venues hosting live music, film, animation, experimental audio visual installations and more.

In the early 90’s, when gangsta’ rap consumed the airwaves, The Pharcyde decidedly maintained a willfully weird vision. Opting to stay true to themselves, rap had seen few groups so self-deprecating and so smart, a group of visionary rappers adroitly able to split the difference between helium-voiced and hard-core.

Over the course of Orleans’s music career, her tagline and brief description for her music has always been “movies for ears”.

Celebrating the finale of a 273 mile odyssey, Dead Rat Orchestra will draw their unique canal and rivers tour to a close at Arnolfini with a special celebration performance. With a set of songs inspired by the stories and traditions of these aging industrial arteries, the trio have traveled exclusively by waterway, performing as they went.

Encounter a magical assembly of large-scale murals, drawings, photographs, film, and historical materials. The exhibition will take you on a journey back and forth through time with references to events real and imagined, including to workers’ strikes, the Iraq war and the Ziggy Stardust tour.

More than 600 performers signed up for a tour of duty with The Lena Ashwell YMCA Concert Parties between 1914 and 1919. They played whatever and wherever was needed, in freezing tents and packed huts, on ships at sea, and at the bedsides of the dying. Inspired by archives and recently discovered private notebooks.

The production, written and performed by Amy Hamlen, tells the story of the oft-forgotten roles women played in Britain in World War Two, and used real accounts of women who lived during that time, interspersed with live music and songs from the period.

This exhibition takes visitors on a journey that explores the world which lies behind the Wallace & Gromit characters, their Bristol based creators, Aardman Animations and the award-winning films.

The Honorable Jimmy Cliff is the only currently living musician to hold the Order of Merit. Best known for songs such as “Sitting in Limbo”, and “You Can Get It If You Really Want”. from the soundtrack to The Harder They Come, which helped popularize reggae across the world.

Featured Artist: Fuller Meet Bristol artist ‘Fuller’ whose latest piece is a large scale map of Bristol, entirely hand- drawn in black ink. The finished piece spans 900mm x 900mm and took over 530 hours drawing time, plus hundreds more hours spent researching and planning. The composition of the piece took place over 3 years while Fuller managed a full time job, doing a couple of hours each morning before work. As an artist, maps have been a constant for Fuller, but he says his work isn’t restricted by geography. “I find it tricky understanding where one’s creativity belongs and accepting that people often like to place you in a certain discipline. Some may argue I’m a fine artist, although never formally trained, others an ‘outsider’ with a naïve practice and often I’m referred to as an illustrator.” Fuller says he became obsessed with maps when he was in the Boys Scouts, “All the dib dib dob got me hooked on maps and understanding how people relate to and depend on their environments.” Fuller uses traditional maps to decide size and scale, then he says it’s a case of immersing himself in the city, meeting people, visiting places and exploring. This combined with visits to the central library, archives, dusty books, web resources and compiling notes from conversations are how the project reached completion earlier this year, with the grand unveiling taking place in May. Looking at the map, you’ll notice how many little idiosyncrasies speak specifically to the people of Bristol. up at Clifton Downs looking out over the view point with a little heart above them. “Everybody knows that could be a romantic couple, but it could also be a bit of tongue in cheek about what else goes on up on the downs,” says Fuller. As the project that had immersed him so heavily in his community drew to an end, it seemed only apt that they should have a chance to contribute to the project on a more observable level. The piece, called ‘The Final Balloon’, was complete except for the central and largest balloon, which was left empty so the people of Bristol could make their mark on the map. He asked the community for inspiration and the winning idea was to honour the ‘Children of the 90s’ research project (Avon Longitudinal Study of Children and Parents). “Since 1991/92 over 14,000 individuals have been taking part in ground breaking research. It is a very unique project and has been used around the world for many medical advances. I’ve used the outline style from the their logo, which happens to be a balloon, and have included hundreds of points which represent all those that have taken part in the trials. Interview: St Vincent 2014 has been a huge year for St Vincent, with the release of her most lauded album to date, a worldwide tour and the honour of inducting Nirvana into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Annie Clarke AKA St Vincent grew up in Dallas, Texas. She is the niece of Tuck Andress, one half of famous jazz duo and cult legends, Tuck and Patti. As a teenager Annie was allowed to go on tour with them as a roadie and later she became an opening act for the pair. Although, Annie says hers was an early obsession with guitar and remembers playing from as young as five years old. “It was very helpful that I had an uncle who was a guitar player, so that when I was stressing a real obsession with music, my parents didn’t assume that I would be homeless.” It’s possible that her uncle’s success was a motivator in her decision to drop out of Berklee College of Music three years in because she was eager to get out there and ‘make it’, rather than staying on and securing a back-up degree. “I don’t really remember what I studied. I wasn’t that serious of a student,” she says. “They have this thing where you can walk across the stage as if you’ve graduated, even if you have something like 20 credits remaining, a year and a half, something like that. So I walked across the stage in front of my parents. “I wanted to move to New York and try and make it, so my parents thought I had graduated but really I had dropped out.” Her latest album, the self-titled St Vincent, sees Annie truly become the artist her last four albums have been working towards. This is her most lyrically sophisticated and musically diverse collection to date, meshing distorted, aggressive electric guitars and bold vocal and synthesizer arrangements on top of a relentless rhythm section. Asked how about how she had gotten to this point, she says, “It’s hard for me to answer that because I’ve been doing it. I’ve been trying to refine my voice as an artist and tried to create a world that is uniquely my own and not easily mistakable for you know, 17 other things. The process by which I got there, I’ve just been working at it for a lot of years. “I named it St Vincent, because I was reading Miles Davis’ autobiography and he talked about how the hardest thing for an artist to do is sound like yourself, and I think that is the ultimate test of artistry - getting to that place where you have refined your instinct and honed your sound so that it is something that’s unmistakable from other things.” The critical reception to the album has been overwhelmingly positive, with The Guardian calling it “an embarrassment of fantastic songs” and “a straightforward triumph”, giving it a perfect five stars. Rolling Stone said the album is “her tightest, tensest, best set of songs to date, with wry, twisty beats pushing her lovably ornery melodies toward grueling revelations” that “the playful way these songs contort makes pain feel like a party.” Review aggregate site Metacritic, gives the album a score of 89 out of 100, based on 40 selected independent reviews, indicating ‘universal acclaim’. Annie is a serious artist by every account. No luck or whim can be attributed to her recent success, every detail is carefully thought out and she possesses this almost poetic insight into the nucleus of things. Appropriately then, the name St Vincent refers to the place Welsh poet Dylan Thomas is buried. “It’s the place where poetry comes to die, ” she jokes. Talking about her new single ‘Regret’ due out this month, Annie tells us it’s an inversion of a song on her previous album. “There’s a song on my last record called ‘Hysterical Strings’ which has this strange sonic passage in it and in ‘Regret’ I inverted that and put it behind the choruses. So even though there are these big major key kind of triumphant sounds, it’s also melancholy. And it’s tackling the big themes like, we’re all alone on the planet, everyone dies alone, we’re all animals... And that’s fine. That’s great, that’s the way it’s supposed to be. So it’s like drawing a negative space, but also having a little bit of the strength through the album.” With the kind of distorted, unhinged sounds she pulls out of a guitar, it’s hard to classify St Vincent’s music into any sort of genre exactly, although it’s clear that at her roots is rock. Growing up she was obsessed with Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth, so it was a big deal for her to be asked to play with the remaining members of Nirvana at their induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where she sang a cover of ‘Lithium’. “I was honoured. The loss of Kurt was really, really palpable from everyone in and around the Nirvana Wall, the band members, Courtney, and the whole team around them. And I wanted to be sensitive to that and I wanted to try to honour the legacy as best I could. “I thought it was cool that they asked women to do it, because Kurt and the guys in the band were such big feminists. They came up in a scene, in Olympia, Washington, that was very punk and queer and feminist and activist and sometimes that gets whitewashed when people talk about Nirvana. But they were very politically aware.” This last year has seen St Vincent explode onto the high-flying music scene, with some more of her recent milestone performances including Later With Jools Holland and Glastonbury. Her live performance has taken on a distinctive style with her almost dreamy, angular movements and very controlled choreography which has become recognisable as St Vincent.

“I worked with a great choreographer named Annie-B Parson, whose M.O. is that she works with either really highly, highly skilled dancers or she works with total novices like me. And I think that what’s interesting about her, is that she prefers to work with either masters of their craft or novices. So with novices like me, I’m not bringing any baggage to the table, I’ve never been trained as a dancer and I don’t really even socially dance. So I’m not coming to the table with any training that I need to unlearn in order to do anything. “And she’s very good and knowing what someone can and can’t embody. And the fun of it is taking that which is organised and planned and then what it does for me, as a performer, is if I know what I’m supposed to be doing in a given moment, I’m fully engaged in the performance because I’m not thinking, oh where shall I go on the stage? Or, does this look stupid if my hand does this? Or, what is this communicating? It’s been beta-tested and organised in such a way that it actually allows me total freedom as a performer. And obviously as time and performances move on, you embody things more and more and everything looks more and more lifted and natural and interesting. But it was so nice to work with someone who just has such a brilliant mind.” Another quirk she’s adopted in her performances is communicating with the audience on a very personal level. For instance, she introduced her Glastonbury set with an address to the audience about that weird guilty feeling you sometimes get when you’re in a shop (you know the one?). “You feel guilty even when you shouldn’t feel guilty, because you think that they think you’re stealing but you’re not stealing. But still you feel guilty. Why is that? If you land on something like that, where someone’s had that exact thought but maybe never exactly expressed it, then you forge this sort of other worldly intimacy. “Also I’m speaking in the second person, I’m saying ‘you’. ‘You do this, you do that, you do this’, so I’m relying on the premise that people like being told about themselves.” She explains that by doing this she is tapping into internet culture and the way in which we are advertised to in this day and age: “‘If you like this, you might like this’. So I’m revisiting this idea of how we get advertised to based on what we Google search, and how we’re sort of being trained. Like Pavlov’s Dog type technology, but I’m using those tools to try and connect more with humanity.” “So I don’t say ‘I’. ‘I’m happy to be here’, it’s obvious I’m happy to be here. I’m not going to pander to the crowd and say, ‘what a great crowd, you guys are awesome.’ It’s obvious that they’re awesome. That’s part of the social contract between audience and performer. I’m psyched, they’re psyched why state the obvious? It’s more interesting to talk to people and try and get a few things that are unique but also very universal, these little thoughts that we all have. “I’m not interested in feigning authenticity. Obviously the music is heartfelt, obviously there’s a tremendous amount of time and effort, and heart and soul, and years put into it. But I feel like I’m pandering to a crowd to do the kind of, you know, ‘it’s so great to be here tonight. I was walking down the street and I ate at your favourite restaurant and then I took a bike ride on that street that you all love...’ I don’t believe in that.”

Independent shopping in Bristol: Meet the owners... Thanks to schemes like the Bristol Pound and ‘Bristol Independents’, Bristol is a city that breeds a culture of independent shopping. Home to some of the best independent shops in the UK, there are dozens of fantastic, one-of-a-kinds for Bristol shoppers to explore. Each month we meet the minds behind the city’s best shops to find out what makes independent shopping in Bristol so brilliant. This month, we spoke to Dagmara Zielinska who owns Way, a trendy unisex clothing boutique on Gloucester Road that stocks bold prints and quirky fashion pieces you won’t find on the high street.

Opening just a year and a half ago at the top of Gloucester Road, Way fits right into the Stokes Croft / Gloucester Road legacy, with the outsides swathed in graffiti from well-known Bristol graffiti artist SPZero76. Inside is a cool collection of urban street wear, funky skater, inner-city hippy, and festival pieces like printed leggings and tees. Without a doubt, Way is the place to come if you are looking for something a bit different. Dagmara seems to have an eye for stand out, yet wearable pieces that you could wear to a festival or to dinner. Way stocks designers you won’t find anywhere else in Bristol like Mr GuGu, as well as independent Bristol labels like Not Too Shabby and their own Way brand. Although Dagmara tells us, it’s not all

completely in-your-face and there are some lovely plainer pieces in store that will still set you apart from a crowd.. How did Way get started? I’ve always wanted to have a shop and a year an a half ago my partner pushed me to finally do it. I’d been buying and selling on ebay, buy and selling, buying and selling... I was very into fashion, so that was where the idea came from. How did you get into fashion? n I was a student I started a bit of modelling, so I got more into fashion and I was dealing with some smaller brands. So I kind of wanted a shop with some small brands, independent and not like

high street chains, and just very unique. And Bristol’s obviously known for that - it’s got that kind of festival feel, it’s inner city, lots of students, lots of quirkiness. Way has got a very distinct look. What kind of stuff do you stock? Our best seller is Mr Gugu, which is the digital printed pictures on materials. They are actually a Polish brand and when I was at one of the trade shows looking for brands I approached them. And I think also because I’m Polish and they’re Polish they were like, “Oh yeah, let’s do this”. Usually they cooperate with much bigger shops, so I was really glad that they got on board. At the beginning it was a very small collection, I was just testing what people think because it’s something a bit different, a bit in-your-face, a bit funky, but people really liked it, so I started to stock more and more. Who is your average customer in here? I’d say students, aged between 16 -25. The style is mostly street wear, urban, funky, for festivals if you want to stand out a little bit. But not everything in here is really in-your-face, we also have some more plain t-shirts, for guys as well. We try to have a bit of variety here, so if someone for example chooses the printed leggings, they’re not going to want to have a printed t-shirt to go with it. Can you tell us about the artwork on the walls? The whole idea of the shop was to have a very rough, kind of industrial feel. That’s why we have scaffolding instead of normal rails and things like that. And I wanted the walls to be very damaged looking. No one could actually create it as I wanted it, so I decided I’m just going to do it. I used hole filler and just dabbed it all over with different paints. And then through a mutual friend I met the tattoo and grafitti artist, Stutti Stutti, who did the art on the walls for me. And outside is also a quite well known grafitti artist in Bristol called SPZero76. You’re situated on the longest stretch of Independents in the UK. Why should shoppers spend locally and come to independent shops instead of big chain stores? For uniqueness and something different. I think people are getting tired of the big chains and the high street thing, because you just walk around and you’re wearing the same thing as everyone else. And also just to support new talent, I think it’s important.

And why do you think that independent culture is so strong in Bristol? People like to stand out here and they’re not afraid to be different. There are lots of musicians here, graffiti artists because of the Banksy thing; the students here like quirky things. And I think if one does it, then then others aren’t afraid and think, “actually I can do it as well!” What do you love most about Gloucester Road? Every day is different. Different people. I wouldn’t want to be in the city centre, it would be nice but the city centre doesn’t have the same vibe as Gloucester Road and you know, Way is supposed to be here. Any exciting plans for the future of Way? I actually have plans to start my own printed t-shirt range. Because I’m looking at brands and not necessarily everyone is doing what I have in mind, so I think why not do it myself? So I’m going to probably cooperate with one of the guys who did the graffiti and do a few funky prints. And then just try to expand and get an online store soon. Why should readers pop into Way over the summer? There are lots of festivals going on, so if you want to look a little bit different, and have something different, I think you can find some cool stuff here that you’re not going to find on the high street.
