Interview: Rebecca Ferguson We talk to X-Factor superstar about her new album Freedom
Liverpudlian singer and songwriter Rebecca Ferguson shot to fame in 2010, after coming runner-up in the 7th series of The X Factor. When the nation first met Rebecca she was only 23. A painfully shy, single mother of two going to college to train as a legal secretary, her under-confidence didn’t garner much hope for her singing ability. But when she opened her mouth to sing, she blew the judges away with her stunning rendition of Sam Cooke’s ‘A Change is Gonna Come’. The nation fell quickly in love with Rebecca as they watched her confidence grow with every performance. She became a firm favourite to win, but finally finished runner-up behind Matt Cardle. Now a platinum-selling artist, Rebecca has risen way above and beyond her X Factor fame. Having been compared to the likes of Mary J Blige, Macy Gray, and held up to her heroins Aretha Franklin and Nina Simone, The Observer describes her voice as “smooth and soulful, like hot caramel sauce poured over a bucket of ice cream”. Her debut album Heaven sold over one million copies and reached number 3 in the UK album charts. She’s been nominated for two MOBO awards, one MTV Europe Music Award and played sold-out tours around the world. But with her new found success, Rebecca explains, came bad people who were out to take advantage of her. The last few years have been extremely hard on the singer, who says she came close to giving it all up. 2012 saw Rebecca locked in a law suit with her former management company, Modest Management, who sued the singer for deciding to terminate their contract after she collapsed from exhaustion. The following year, Rebecca was reportedly scammed out of over £100,000 from a group of people she thought were her friends. She told the Daily Record, “I put too much trust in people and for that reason they took advantage of me. I had money, well over £100,000, stolen from me from people I trusted who sought to gain from me. It’s really disgusting. It’s the betrayal.” On top of all this, Rebecca also had her heart badly broken. And at her lowest point, the option to quit looked very tempting. Instead, she took to the recording studio and channelled her pain into music. The result is her outstanding new album, Freedom. Freedom has been very well received by her fans, reaching number 6 in the main UK charts and with positive feedback from critics,“There is nothing about this record I don’t like.” -Daily Telegraph It’s clear that Rebecca Ferguson has emerged as a much stronger, more assertive artist with something to say. The second single from the album released this month, ‘All That I’ve Got’, tells of her fight back against those who took advantage of the singer (“You took what you wanted, but you’re leaving with nothing”). 7
Her voice too has matured, which Rebecca believes is down to the heartache she’s suffered recently, “I feel like suffering affects someone’s voice (...) you can hear the pain.” We caught up with Rebecca to talk about the new album ahead of her show at Bristol’s Coslton Hall this month. You’ve had a fantastic reception to your new album Freedom. How does this album differ from your first album, Heaven? It’s more just me as a person, I think I’ve changed since Heaven. I’m a lot stronger, I’m a lot more assertive, more outspoken, and care less about what people think. So I think that influenced me when I was writing the album, because it was a bit more unapologetic and honest. Heaven was honest, but I think Freedom just had a bit of a different edge to it.
As well as the album title, there are two tracks called ‘My Freedom’ and ‘Freedom’. What are you freeing yourself from? I think at the time I was freeing myself from all the bad people I had around me. I had so many people that wanted to control me. I was new to the music industry, I was new to having money, I was new to not living in my hometown, so I attracted a lot of bad people. Freedom was about saying, “You know what? I’m getting you all out of my life.” And getting the broom out and brushing them all out of my life. The first ‘My Freedom’ on the album was me playing the role of being a bully basically, and that’s why the lyrics are quite dark. Then ‘Freedom’ was the last song recorded on the album and it’s all about just letting go really, and accepting that it’s all over. Your voice is very distinctive. It’s one of those voices you would know immediately, first time you heard a new song on the radio. How did you find your sound? Thank you! I think it’s developed over the years. I was talking actually to a taxi driver yesterday about this, he mentioned someone he had seen on telly and he said she was crap or something. And I said to him that what he didn’t realise was that it was a craft. It’s something you should be doing from a young age and you develop. Because my voice sounded different I’ve got recordings of myself when I was 21 and I sound nothing like how I sound now. I feel like pain and suffering affects someone’s voice as well. I feel like it influences your tone. And that’s why soul singers have quite a gravelly voice. Like, Sam Cooke I’m a big fan of and Aretha Franklin, you can hear the pain in their voice. And that’s what your hearing when people say it’s a bit raspy, it’s a bit gravelly. I think you’re actually hearing a bit of who they are. So I feel like people’s voices change as they get older. Mine’s definitely changed the more crap I’ve been through, it’s gone a bit more huskier.
Have you preferred recording one or the other? Oh, that’s a hard one to say! But I think I was in a better head space when I wrote Heaven and so it was a bit more relaxed. I think with Freedom I had so much going on personally, I enjoyed writing the album, but I wasn’t having the best time. Every song on the new album feels very meaningful. What is the album about for you? The album is basically just about overcoming oppression really, and overcoming bad people and bad experiences and coming out the other end happy and more positive. That’s the spin that I wanted to put on the album - that you can get through anything. A lot of the lyrics are about that. When I wrote ‘My Best’ it was about not giving up, even when your life looks like it’s going absolutely nowhere and everything’s against you. The whole angle for the album is about positivity. Is that why you released the single ‘I Hope’ first? I Hope is about forgiveness and letting bad people go and moving on with your life and being happy. It’s funny because it’s almost like ‘All That I’ve Got’ should have been released first - that’s my new single (released 2nd March). ‘All That I’ve Got’ is about fighting people that are getting you down and about overcoming it and not giving up when people are trying to lower you.
When did you realise that you could sing? I always wanted to sing. I don’t know if I could always sing though, you know. It’s funny! Literally my first memory is me being three trying to sing, and I always knew I was going to be a singer. Now when I listen back to old recordings, I’m like, “actually, you wasn’t that good! You wasn’t all that Becky!” (laughs) I think I was that determined, I crafted it and just practiced and practiced and practiced. And I think confidence was an issue with me, it wasn’t that I couldn’t sing. I just wasn’t confident enough to sing. Obviously X Factor shot you to fame very quickly. How did you cope with such a huge life change in such a short space of time? I think the first year was exciting, but also mentally hard to get my head around. The second year I was just coming to terms with it, and I think now I’m in a happy content place. I think it’s so easy to go underwater with fame because you get a bit wrapped up in it. But when you’re a bit older you realise it’s all just an illusion and it’s not where happiness is. I’m not as bothered about what people think of me now. And going through what I went through last year, I had quite a hard year and most of it being documented, I think it made me value life more. I’m not as bothered about fame or paparazzi, I’m a bit more grounded. Would you recommend it? I think if you know who you are and you’ve gigged a lot, yes. I think you’ve got to experience the industry a bit more before you go on The X Factor. I think you’ve got to have a taste of it.
We met your lovely son and daughter when you first appeared on X Factor. How do you find juggling being a mum and a bit of a superstar? Aw! I’m getting there now. It’s just like any working mum, you’ve got to make sacrifices. I think the first year you’ve got to put all the hard work in, but now I think I balance it well and I see my kids all the time and my family. I feel like I’m lucky. People often say that X Factor runners up do better than the winners. Your new album has done better than Matt Cardle’s album released the same year. Were you ever secretly glad you didn’t win? I was glad I didn’t win, because it gave me time to write a proper album and a bit more freedom. And it wasn’t as tense. I feel like there’s too much pressure on the winners. I don’t know if they feel that, but I would.
We’re looking forward to seeing you play in Bristol next month. What can your fans expect from your live show? Fun! I’m a lot more relaxed on stage now so I’m a lot more free and I just want everyone to have a laugh! I want it to be a fun, happy show. There will be moments where I’ll get deep and talk about what the songs are about, but ultimately me and my band are going to have fun. My band are going to be very involved with little solo parts. The whole theme is just what we do on the road, you know, after gigs and stuff - I’ve got a bar on the stage! It’s just going to be a laugh! And I’ll be getting people up and dancing and stuff. I’m excited.

A retro-modern magic show. Elegant sleight of hand, baffling magical apparatus and inexplicable illusions presented with humour and flair. See the original version of the beautiful Marvellous Orange Tree as romanticised in the film The Illusionist. From the House of Commons in London to the Magic Castle in Hollywood, Rob James is a veteran of over 2000 performances. ‘Rob James was excellent. Dry humour, classic magic and some elegant sleight of hand wowed the audience’ (Magicseen Magazine). ‘Beautifully presented classic illusions’ (Tvbomb.co.uk)

14th & 15th March At his young age, Danny Cole has already made a significant mark in the world of magic. He was twice voted “Stage Magician of the Year” by the membership of the Magic Castle in Hollywood, he was a guest performer on Lance Burton’s second network special, he has consulted and created magic for other magicians and he has been a featured performer in Gala shows and at Variety Theatres around the globe. Danny Cole’s stylized approach to magic uses entirely new concepts and principles thereby helping audiences to fully recognize magic’s place as a legitimate art form.

The Stranglers We talk to legendary bassist JJ Burnel ahead of The Stranglers’ 40th Anniversary Tour
2014 marks a remarkable chapter in the life of new wave icons, The Stranglers. Very few bands survive to celebrate their 40th Anniversary, and even fewer bands have a history, indeed a notoriety, to compare to these titanic figures, who emerged from various blues, jazz and classical movements, became figureheads of punk and then transcended genres to become one of the most revered alternative bands of the last four decades. To commemorate this huge achievement, The Stranglers are embarking on a major world tour, which comes to Bristol’s O2 Academy at the end of this month. Fans can look forward to a selection of songs from across their whole career, with all their biggest hits included in the set list. Their long, pioneering and often controversial career, which has seen these enfants terrible go from being the quintessential anti-establishment scourge of the music industry who were banned by the BBC to becoming pillars of said establishment with their performance at the 2012 6Music Proms at the Albert Hall with a full orchestra. Formed in 1974 as The Guildford Stranglers, the band were initially based in The Jackpot, an off-licence run by their
drummer Jet Black. Quickly developing a pub-rock following they were soon swooped into the punk movement, opening for both Patti Smith and The Ramones on their British tours. Releasing their first three albums – ‘Rattus Norvegicus’, ‘No More Heroes’ and ‘Black And White’ – within 13 months of each other and scoring hit singles with the likes of ‘Peaches’, ‘Something Better Change’ and, of course, the track ‘No More Heroes’ itself, The Stranglers quickly trademarked their sound; a swirling, heady concoction of psychedelic keyboards, growling vocals, hard-edged bass and an almost jazz-like drum sound. But it was their attitude to the music press that really set them apart. Accused of being both sexist and racist by critics who didn’t see the patent absurdity and sarcasm in their lyrics, The Stranglers chose the path of most resistance and went to war. Founding member and bass guitarist JJ Burnel earned himself a reputation as the band’s bad boy, getting into fights and causing havoc at every turn. Notorious spats included punching the journalist Jon Savage at a public event, leaving another journalist strapped to a wheelchair in Reykjavik airport while his plane departed and gaffer-taping a third writer to a girder on the
first floor of the Eiffel Tower with his trousers round his ankles. Now in his sixties and a father of two, JJ Burnel says the responsibility helped him clean up his act. We gave him a call to chat about The Stranglers 40th Anniversary Tour... JJ starts off by asking me about the weather in Bristol, “Is it tipping it down yet?” (he is planning on heading to the South West the same afternoon). JJ is a regular visitor to the South West and people of Bristol shouldn’t be too surprised to see him out and about. “It’s a cool city”, he says. “We rehearse in the West Country; our road crew comes from Bristol, Bath and thereabouts. We’ve had quite a long relationship with the place actually. Our recording studio is based there.” We ask JJ about the decision to embark on a 40th anniversary tour, “Isn’t it something that should be celebrated? In a time of transience and things not lasting very long, we thought we should mark it.” What can your fans expect to hear on the 40th Anniversary Tour? We’ve got seventeen studio albums to our collective over the years, so we’re going to try and pick at least one piece from each of those. We’ll try and touch all bases. The last few years we’ve been playing quite a lot of new stuff, because you know, that’s what’s bringing people in. But I think with the old stuff there’s a lot of nostalgia, isn’t there? People like to hear the stuff they’ve grown up with. How did it feel to play the 6Music Proms after having your songs banned by the BBC in the past? It was quite strange to be endorsed, to be first band of our kind ever to be asked to play the Proms. The BBC Proms is the oldest and biggest music festival in the world, so as a band that has been banned at various points in its career, to then suddenly be asked to play with an orchestra is quite a big deal. It was for me anyway. I think a lot of people were quite surprised that the BBC chose us. It was great, it was very exciting. You’ve obviously calmed down a fair bit since your younger days. Do you still have a rebellious streak? Well I suspect it won’t have completely disappeared from my DNA! In the past your music has been quite politically-charged. Do you think your music has the same impact it once did? Well, occasionally. We have talked about sex, and drugs and rock and roll as well! Probably not, it doesn’t have the same impact. But nothing seems to have much impact these days. Music seems to be used just for dancing, I don’t know, for listening to... Times have changed. And also our music is not being played hugely on Radio One or such stuff, so people access it in different ways now. You know, we’re not on Top of the Pops every week. Do people write as much about what’s happening in the world as much anymore? I don’t think so actually. I come from a generation where we thought music could change the world. Change opinions, you know. But I’m not sure it’s being used that way anymore. Can we expect any more studio albums from the Stranglers? Well, we’re not dead yet! It’s not a farewell tour, it’s an anniversary tour.
Don’t miss the Stranglers 40th Anniversary Tour at the O2 Academy on the 27th March! Interview by Rachel Morris
Review: Kerrang! Tour 2014 - Limp Bizkit
Photographer - Martin Thompson
Last month, The Kerrang! Tour 2014 brought headliners Limp Bizkit to Bristol’s O2 Academy. Bristol Listings were there to check it out....
Legendary nu-metal superstars Limp Bizkit were supported on the Kerrang! 2014 Tour by by L.A thrash metal band Nekrogoblikon, who came complete with a goblin in full latex costume; and Japanese metalcore group Crossfaith, whose cover of the Prodigy’s Omen was a definite highlight of the evening. Nonetheless, it was obvious the crowd were there for Durst. With three grammy award nominations and 40 million records sold worldwide, Limp Bizkit remain one of the biggest nu-metal bands ever to come out of America. Over a decade since the success of Chocolate Starfish, their fans are as excited as ever, with red baseball caps dotting the crowd. Durst embraced the time warp, kicking off the set with, “let’s party like it’s 1999!” A brief wave of worry engulfed the nostalgia-hungry crowd when they opened with a cover of Guns N’ Roses’ Welcome to the Jungle. But confidence was quickly restored when they ploughed straight into Rolling and worked their way through their old favourites including My Way, Nookie, Break Stuff and My Generation. Compared to the huge arenas Limp Bizkit played in their
heyday, the academy might have seemed humble, but Durst seemed to be genuinely enjoying the intimacy of the venue, telling the audience he was “loving the eye-contact”, before making his way down into the crowd for a walk around. At one point Durst let the audience choose between “a song about someone I wanted to have (Faith), or someone I had many times (Eat you Alive)”; the crowd choosing Faith. Wes Borland was dressed for the occasion in a bizarre trouserless, tiki-style outfit and teased the crowd throughout the night with the iconic Take a Look around riff, before finally following through into their last song. Moshing was - as it should be at a Limp Bizkit gig - prolific, yet kept respectful to a point; with Durst calling out one crowd-surfer, “I hate that. You know why? People get kicked in the head”. The Kerrang! Tour was a rare opportunity to see Limp Bizkit in a gig environment, who have only really played UK festivals in the last few years. And one Limp Bizkit fan to another, nobody wanted to ruin anybody’s time. Overall, the gig was brilliant and a happy, sweaty crowd poured out of the Academy.

Independent shopping in Bristol: Meet the owners... Thanks to schemes like the Bristol Pound and ‘Bristol Independents’, Bristol is a city that breeds a culture of independent shopping. Home to some of the best independent shops in the UK, there are dozens of fantastic, one-of-a-kinds for Bristol shoppers explore. Each month we meet the minds behind the city’s best shops to find out what makes independent shopping in Bristol so brilliant. This month, we spoke to Alison Taylor, owner of Ragtrade Boutique...
Within Christmas Steps Shopping Quarter resides one of Bristol’s little-known gems, Ragtrade Boutique. Built on the concept of recycling pre-loved clothing, Ragtrade encourages women to re- home those beautiful but neglected garments wasting away in every women’s wardrobe. Customers can sell, trade and buy second-hand clothing and accessories. 102
On entering the store, you can see immediately that there is a good variety of clothing and accessories in different styles and sizes; truly there is - pardon the cliché - something for everyone. Ragtrade are very fussy about what they take and that is evident in the quality of clothing on the rails. A surprising amount of items in the shop still have their original tags on. Owner Alison tells us, “the average woman admits to owning six items of clothing they’ve never worn!” The clean, brightly lit rails at the front of the shop showcase the newest stock, while a small corridor leads through to a boudoir-style area at the back which feels a bit like stumbling upon a treasure trove. Amongst other things, here you’ll find the legendary £5 - £10 rail.
Ragtrade sells using a very fair system which means that those popping in regularly are bound to find plenty of bargains. Every item has a strict seven-week selling period. If the item hasn’t sold within the first four weeks the price is then reduced by one third. It runs for two weeks at a third of the price, and if it still hasn’t sold at the end of those two weeks it goes on the £5 - £10 rail. There will always be something new to look at, Alison tells us, because the stock turns over very quickly. She estimates that she puts out around twenty new items per day. Stock ranges from top-end high street to designer, with some amazing deals to be found. At the top end of the scale, we
found a Vivian Westwood Red Label blouse with the tag still on for £66, a pair of Jimmy Choos for £99, and a Marc Jacob faux fur at £81. We couldn’t help bagging ourselves a bargain whilst we were there, picking up a pair of almost-new Karen Millen heeled boots at just £36. Alison’s recycling concept has won her a place in the semi-finals of the NatWest Women in Business Venus Awards, nominated for the South West’s ‘Green’ category in recognition of her progressive attitude towards cutting down on wasted clothing.
So what’s the concept behind Ragtrade? How does it work? Basically, it’s encouraging people to recycle their clothing. So people bring their stuff into me and I’ll sell it on commission for them. It has a seven week selling period in the shop and if it sells for them, they can either take the cash, in which case they get 40% of what I sell it for, or they can leave it in the shop and it acts like a credit note for them. So everyone that sells in here has their own little bank account. But often people will leave their credit in the shop and purchase something else with it. The stock turns over really quickly, because everything only gets a seven week selling cycle. So that always means there’s new stuff in the shop. I probably put out twenty new pieces every morning. I get regulars that will come in every few days because they know there’s always new stuff for them to look at. And because I’ve got so many people selling through me there’s always a really good cross section of stuff going out. Congratulations on getting through to the semi-finals in the NatWest Venus Women in Business Awards. Can you tell us a bit about the award? We’ve been nominated for the Green category in the South West, obviously because of the recycling. And we’ve just found out we’ve got through to the semi-finals, so we’re very chuffed! Recycling clothes is a brilliant idea. Is that something you did before Ragtrade? Yeah, always! Before this, my friend and I set up a children’s second-hand clothing business which was doing exactly the same thing. We started it when she’d just had her second and I’d just had my third child, and we were just realising how expensive children’s clothing is, when children only wear it for 104
a short amount of time. And there are so many women that buy clothes and never wear them, there’s so much waste! The average woman admits to owning six items of clothing they have never worn. I’ve got so much in here that has still got its tags on because people have bought clothes and not actually ever worn them. What kind of clothing do you stock in here? Top end high-street and upwards. Labels starting around Whistles, Karen Millen... up to Vivian Westwood, Mulberry, Dior. We get a lot of boutique labels like By Malene Birger, and we get a lot of Paul Smith. We get more of that than the really high-end stuff like Gucci and Chanel. But I’m really fussy about what I take. Unless you’ve been in here, some people get put off by the thought of second-hand clothing because they think it’s going to be like a grungy charity shop. But once people have been in they realise it’s actually a really nice boutique environment. Often people can feel a bit intimated coming into a shop like this, but there’s a really lovely atmosphere in here... Yeah, we really want it feel like a place where people can come in and try stuff on and feel almost like it’s their own dressing room. I want it to feel really friendly and fun and I think that is how people feel about it. Once people have set foot through the door, they tend to come back! www.ragtradeboutique.co.uk 0117 376 3085 2 Upper Maudlin Street
