Interview: Katherine Ryan

Katherine Ryan brings her critically acclaimed new show ‘Glam Role Model’ to Bristol this month, which focuses on her fascination with the shady world of glamour modelling and celebrity. Comedian Katherine Ryan is fast becoming a familiar face on British TV, with appearances on BBC 1’s Live At The Apollo and Let’s Dance for Comic Relief, BBC 2’s Mock The Week, QI and Nevermind The Buzzcocks, and as a regular panellist C4’s 8 Out of 10 Cats.

But I grew up in North America and you can’t really escape the culture and all media and stuff there. Something I’ve noticed is I think British people are always really interested in what the rest of the world thinks of them, so I think that’s the perspective that I have.

Following a totally sold out run recently at London’s Soho Theatre and at the Edinburgh Festival, Katherine Ryan hits the road with her new, critically acclaimed show Glam Role Model.

What brought you to the UK?

In Katherine Ryan’s homeland of Canada, it isn’t unheard of for women to expose their breasts in public. To her amusement, however, here in the UK this questionable pastime actually has a title: ‘glamour modelling’. Don’t get her wrong – being an ex-Hooters employee, Katherine’s not averse to females making the most of their assets. Sex sells, and she’s aware of this. What does get her goat, however, is not so much what glamour models do as what they don’t do: speak. Besides saying what they are told to say, the only words they seem to utter in public are eviction nominations on Celebrity Big Brother. Would it do them any harm to have something important to say? Glam Role Model takes a look at the murky world of the beauty industry and examines the role of models who provide its bread and butter. Everyone deserves a voice, and Katherine Ryan invites you to celebrate and strengthen yours through laughter. You’re originally from Canada. Would you consider yourself a foreign comic? Your influences certainly make a difference because they shape what kind of comic you’re going to be. I’m an Irish citizen, my dad is from Cork and he moved over to Canada when he was 30 and met my mum. I started comedy in Cananda but I wasn’t really doing a whole lot of it. So technically I’m a British comic because all of my comedy influences come from the UK comedy scene and other UK comics. That’s really where I developed my comedy voice. All my references are UK references - I am a Londoner, but I come from somewhere else. 6

It was the comedy scene. I had a partner at the time who was a Canadian comedian, he’s not doing comedy anymore, but he was older than me and he was like, “Oh, UK comedy, it’s the best in the world. We’ve gotta go, we’ve gotta go...” And I didn’t know. I came just for a month to try it, and then I stayed another month and then another month and it was really the London comedy scene I fell in love with. So I got rid of him, but I stayed here. You’ve dated other comics too. How is it being in a relationship with two comedians? Well, not that great in my experience! Which is why I’m no longer dating a comedian... But I can say this about dating comedians, because I know a lot of comedians are dating, it seems like a bad idea in any profession to date someone from work, because more often than not it goes wrong and you still have to see that person. But I think the reason so many comedians date, or if you look at comedians who are married like Bridget Christie and Stewart Lee, or Sarah Millican and Gary Delaney, I think you speak the same language from the start. You both value comedy, you have the same hours, you kind of understand each other. So I think that’s why it happens. Even though I think, largely, it’s not a good idea, it turns out well sometimes. When did you first realise you wanted to be a comedian? It was a slow realisation, there was no real moment. My mother, from a very young age, always said that I should be a comedian. And it’s not that I couldn’t, I just didn’t even consider that was an option for me.

My special treat was to stay up late on a Friday night and watch late night american trash like David Letterman, or Jay Leno or even old Johnny Carson episodes. I always loved that format of talking about the news. You know, doing a monologue, talking about the news, interviewing a celebrity, and I think that has stayed with me a long time because I still talk about the news and celebrity culture. It wasn’t until I was living in Toronto for uni, which is kind of the London of Canada, and I was waitressing and presenting, and I was very frustrated that as a presenter I kept offending people. I couldn’t say all the things I wanted to say. I couldn’t be funny! So I started going to the open mic nights at the comedy club that was right next to the restaurant where I worked. But even then, I wasn’t doing it as a career. I just thought oh this’ll be a fun thing to do, kind of like a spin class. Even when I came to London and I started doing more comedy, I was working in an office. It’s something I never, never considered as a career, it was just a thing that I loved to do. And I didn’t realise that you can make a career out of the thing that you love to do. It kind of just happened really organically. I started getting more paid gigs and eventually I quit the office job. You’re a regular on shows like 8 out of 10 Cats and Never Mind the Buzzcocks. What’s been your career highlight so far? I think 8 out of 10 Cats was especially exciting because that’s the first panel show I got to do. I had auditioned for that a couple of years in a row, because that’s how they do it, the producers go out and they scout new comedy acts and then they’ll invite you into the office to do a run through with other new comedians. And you just play the game, but in an office. So it was something that I really had to earn my stripes at, I had to work hard at that and keep trying. I love failing at something and having to try again. I think that’s really fun, because then when you finally do get it, it’s special. So I think I’ll always be really, really fond of Zeppotron and Jimmy Carr, it really was just my first big opportunity. They took a chance on me, and then when that goes well, then the other panel shows will have you on. That’s how it works. What would be your biggest dream in comedy? Well I’ve been working away writing some comedy series, you know, narrative scripted comedy. And I would love to go the way Tina Fey has gone and write a really successful series or film. I always just want to be doing comedy, no matter what. Whether that’s behind the scenes, or writing or acting or doing stand-up. I would love to have a chat show one day, late-night, going back to my first love of monologue, then news sort of jokey stand up, and then an interview guest. I love that format. Your tour of ‘Glam Role Model’ kicks off this month, what’s the show about? It’s kind of about glamour models; it explores the whole religion of celebrity. I think that celebrity is the prevailing religion at the moment, especially for young people and especially on social media. They worship them. It’s kind of about glamour models; it explores the whole religion of celebrity. I think that celebrity is the prevailing religion at the moment, especially for young people and especially on social media. They worship them. You get young people, like “I just want to be famous”. They don’t want to have a skill, they don’t want to have accomplished anything. And fame can be really.... dirty. A really stressful, horrible machine. And I think that’s my interest in that culture. I talk a lot about celebrity. The tour changes as well, I started doing ‘Glam Role Model’ in April and it was different then to what it was in Edinburgh this August. And it will probably be a little bit different again on this tour because I like to keep it really fresh and relate everything to what’s going on in the news and in the magazines and celebrity pop culture. I also talk about this profession of glamour modelling, which we don’t have in Canada. There were a few little culture shocks coming over here from North America, but I think maybe what Brits don’t realise is that you’re the only country in the world that has a young woman with her tits out in your newspaper. Nowhere else does that! The thing with glamour models is they’re so mainstream that they kind of are the role models. They’re on television, they’re in the jungle, they’re in the Big Brother house, they’re on panel shows. And I think it creates a really dangerous model for young girls that they should aspire to be decoration. And I think, obviously, we know we can be so much more than decorations. It’s all about finding your authentic voice. So that’s what I do, I take celebrity and pop culture and then I dissect it and feed it back in a way that I think presents a different message. And I don’t expect everyone to agree with me, but I think it’s something they should hear. Is there also a reference in there to being a female comic? Maybe a little bit, now and then I refer to it. I love being a female comic. Jenny Collier was recently dropped from a line up because the promoters didn’t want “too many female comedians on the line up”. How do you deal with the whole idea of the ‘female comedian’, as opposed to being a performer in their own right, regardless of gender? I think that only happens at a certain level and then it doesn’t happen any more. Certainly with the new BBC rulings, they have to have at least one woman on every panel show. It’s changing, you don’t really see it in TV anymore that anyone will say, “Oh you can’t do that because you’re a woman”. I really think that a once you get past a certain level, we have exactly the same opportunities as men. A lot of the producers that I work for are women. A lot of the male producers that I work for are certainly feminist. All the male comics are feminist and are really welcoming and really fair. I don’t know Jenny, but I remember reading that story. And yeah, I’ve experienced similar things starting out, but you just have to keep your head up and be peaceful about the fact that they’ve closed the way. Because most people aren’t like that. We answer this question a lot and I think it was Bec Hill who worded it the best: “What’s the difference between being a female comedian and a male comedian? The only difference is, being a female, you get asked this question.” I can only speak for myself and from my experience, but it’s been nothing but opportunities and luck and being treated fairly, and just being given loads and loads of chances and respect.

Win tickets to Stephen Fry’s SOLD-OUT ‘More Fool Me’ tour Stephen Fry is not just a multi-award-winning comedian and actor, but also an author, director and presenter and master of Twitter. He has been the BAFTA Awards Ceremony host nine times, and has hosted BBC favourite QI since 2003. In January 2010, he was awarded the Special Recognition Award at the National Television Awards. Exceptionally outspoken and crusading, Stephen Fry is one of the most influential cultural forces our country has ever known. His new volume of memoirs More Fool Me is a dazzling, courageously frank, and utterly entrancing read from start to finish. Stephen Fry will mark the release of the publication with a live performance at Colston Hall which will give 25th Sept // Colston Hall // 7.30pm 8

audiences a sneak preview into the content of this much anticipated memoir: “a heady tale of the late eighties and early nineties in which Stephen – driven to create, perform and entertain – burned bright and partied hard and damn the consequences...” Fry rose to fame alongside Hugh Laurie in A Bit of Fry and Laurie (which he co- wrote with Laurie) and Jeeves and Wooster, and was unforgettable as General Melchett in Blackadder. Over two decades later, Stephen Fry is a true national treasure and his legions of fans tune in to watch him host the popular quiz show QI each week. Unsurprisingly then, tickets to his More Fool Me tour

completely sold out almost as soon as they went on sale. Luckily for Bristol Listings readers, we’re offering you the chance to win a pair of tickets to the show. Each ticket will include a hardback copy of the new book (RRP £25.00) to be collected on the night. Stephen Fry will be signing copies after the show.

The Comedy Box: Ben Norris and Co.

The Bristol half marathon was first held in 1989 when it attracted 1,000 runners. The race celebrated its silver anniversary in 2013 and is now one of Bristol’s most prestigious sporting events.

With comparisons to Dylan, Rage Against The Machine, Howling Wolf and Bonham, it’s easy to see why The Graveltones have stirred up so much noise of late. For a band whose debut Album hasn’t even been released the future looks bright for The Graveltones.

Recently seen supporting Ed Byrne on his national tour, Ben Norris lies on the periphery of laddishness; part lairy blokishness, part middle-class haughtiness. “The most polished stand-up you are likely to see.” GQ Magazine.

The Bristol Blues Festival

In early 90’s, when gangsta’ rap consumed the airwaves, The Pharcyde maintained a willfully weird vision. Staying true to themselves with their left field but still South-Central sensibility, rap had seen few groups so self-deprecating and so smart, a group of visionary rappers able to split the difference between helium-voiced and hard-core.

Bristol Doors Open Day is a once-a-year chance to look behind closed doors and discover the city’s hidden treasures. You can explore fascinating buildings, join guided tours and enjoy a range of events and activities all free for the day.

JAMES RHODES

Not your average pianist... You wouldn’t be alone in thinking classical music is not for you, and one man is working hard to change the perception of a genre of music often thought of as elitist or unfathomable. Meet James Rhodes... e’s a pianist with no formal academic musical H education, but James Rhodes is now considered one of the most exciting figures in classical music. His talent at the keyboard is unquestionable and his passion for sharing the power of music has won him many fans. Music has been a therapy for James, who has used the piano as a tool for standing up to his own demons. He has become as much a champion for mental health issues as he has for music education. An evening in the company of James is enlightening and engaging as

he leads the audience through the music, immersing them in tales of favourite composers and sharing personal anecdotes. Think of it as classical stand-up.

Brodsky Quartet at the RWA 1 Sept The first of five concerts presented as part of series ‘The World Changed’, this is the start a journey through Shostakovich’s fi?een string quartets - some of the composer’s most personal and moving works. Come and have your St George’s moment. Visit our website and sign up for email newsletters today.

An Evening with Roger McGuinn 25 Sept A compelling solo performance by the elder statesman of Americana – and founder of The Byrds - taking in the whole half century of what is a truly gliMering career. Roger McGuinn helped bring folk, country and bluegrass into the mainstream. ENTERTAINMENT | 25

Featured Artist: Andrew Prior Andrew Prior has been living in Bristol for a good 10 years, but has been drawing little people and their mechanical worlds for as long as he can remember. Using fine ink pens that have continued to shrink over time, the sheets of paper have merely continued to grow in size. “I started with standard Berol Handwriting pens. I remember having to draw fish at school, which I found pretty boring. Luckily, I was allowed to slice it open and fill it with mini submarines and missiles. I’d done a couple already, but this cemented my love of cross-sections fuzed with creatures. That was over 20 years ago now! I’ve recently done a huge ant, which contains its own fish submarine. A bit of a reference, although I like to think my drawing style has improved. The detail has definitely gone up, and I’m now drawing with Isograph technical pens.” Having had a full time job since leaving education, Andrew’s obsession with detail has led to some extremely patient works. His version of the alphabet took up evenings and weekends over a 6 year stretch, while a vast battle between an ant and a wasp took another 5. “Yes, it’s a bit nuts! But I wasn’t working to a deadline, and I’m not the reclusive artist type. I had lots of other things going on too. I like to look at the alphabet as 26 separate pictures as I’ve tried to give them all a different style.” For more, see www.origamidrawing.co.uk or ‘origami drawing’ on Facebook. 28

Featured Artist is curated by James Koch www.jameskochphotography.com

More recently, Andrew has been working on slightly smaller projects, enjoying the change of scale. “I find myself drawing a lot faster too, without it seeming like such a mammoth task. I also used to do a lot of geeky research into cogs, jet engines, etc. for inspiration. I’m now going a lot more with just my imagination.” Despite a pile of frames building up in his lounge, Andrew has never exhibited all his pictures together in a public place. Having moved to St Andrews last summer, he hopes to finally get his pictures around the local area. “I’m very excited about it. I’m going to be very happy to just see them hanging on a wall somewhere, but I now have a bit more free time and am going to try and push things a bit more.” Currently working on a map of Gloucester Road, Andrew has thrown in a few additions, such as a real octopus leaning over the Prince of Wales, and a city wall under attack from mechanical ants. Also filling out an application for the Shaun the Sheep trail next summer, there’s no doubt that the army of little people will keep on growing. Andrew’s show runs September 15-30th at The Gallimaufry, Gloucester Rd

Interview: Manchester Orchestra Hailing originally from suburban Atlanta, indie rock group Manchester Orchestra head back to the UK this September for the second time this year, after demand for their April tour meant that their London show sold out in less than an hour.

Since forming in the bedroom of front man Andy Hull back in 2004, the band has undergone huge changes in terms of both their sound and their arrangement. In fact, their first album was never released because they felt that they had changed direction so much, stating “the band that made the record was different to the band now.” In the years since, they’ve been steadily finding their feet, getting recognized as a real musical force to watch for with their current line up: lead vocalist and rhythm guitar Andy Hull, lead guitarist Robert McDowell, keyboardist/percussionist Chris Freeman, bassist Andy Prince and drummer Tim Very. In 2011 they released their third studio album Simple Math to much critical acclaim. The album was described as a concept album, telling the story of front man Andy’s life from his own perspective. A venture which saw the group experiment with (and nail) a plethora of new musical territory. Hull conceived an epic, memoiristic concept album that featured elaborate arrangements including a string section and children’s choir. Simple Math, without a doubt, had been their most successful album to date, and after proving their musicianship and versatility, no one could be sure which direction the band would take. What came next was their “big, raw, heavy rock record”. Cope, released earlier this year, is a relentless rock record with no apologies. “We wanted to make the kind of album that’s missing at this time in rock: something that’s just brutal and pounding you over the head every track, something unrelenting and unapologetic,” Hull explains. “Whereas Simple Math was a palate with each song a different color, I wanted this to be black and red the whole time. Our mission statement was to make a crazy-loud rock record. We demoed some slower, introspective songs, but we had to set those aside because this album is not that. This album was about being cool with dedicating yourself to something and sticking through with it. Even the album title is bold and straight-to-the-point.” We spoke to front man Andy Hull before Manchester Orchestra head out on their second UK tour this year, arriving at Bristol’s Anson Rooms on the 27th September... Despite being born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia; the band is named after the city of Manchester, UK. What was your fascination with the British city? We were young kids going through the throws of high school drama, heartbreak in particular, and the sounds that we were hearing coming out of the city of Manchester seemed to really resonate with us in such a sensitive and new time in our lives. Morrissey and The Smiths were very much a big part of that; In sort of tapping into that feeling of being hurt. The city itself was a big part of that as well. We weren’t really raised as city kids, we’re more “suburbanites” by nature, so we connected with the sort of working class atmosphere where all of this great art was coming out of. Being surrounded by soccer moms and mini vans in the suburbs wasn’t exactly the environment we saw music and art spewing out of, so we really connected with the idea that we could stand out in an environment so poised to make everyone seem exactly the same. Aptly then, you have garnered a huge following in the UK, with your London show earlier this year selling out in under an hour. Do you notice a difference between your US fans and your UK fans in the way that they respond to the music? Fans all over the world seem to respond to live music in their own unique way. I love the way the UK responds to music; It’s very visceral and decisive. Waving flags at festivals, throwing beer, its very raucous and sweaty, which is a great environment for a show. You’ve undergone a lot of line up changes since forming the band in 2004. How do you make sure you keep on sounding like Manchester Orchestra? Manchester Orchestra songs have a certain feeling about them. There’s something in the air when we hit that vein and we just sort of try and evolve with it and move forward. Simple Math took a completely new direction than any of your previous albums. What prompted you to do something so different? That record definitely reflects the thoughts and feelings behind, what I consider to be, the very whirlwind lifestyle that we were living in our early twenties. Our heads were musically vibrant and strange, we had the confidence of a band on a major label and the tools to be able to run in any direction we could and I believe that we did exactly that. You could say that Simple Math left the door open for a lot of potential musical directions with all the different sounds you experiment with, but you’ve described new album Cope as your “big, raw, heavy rock record” and “pedal to the metal the whole time”. Why did you decide to go for a rock heavy record this time? Again, we’re always just trying to evolve with the beast that is Manchester Orchestra. It’s our lifeblood and we do things straight from the gut. Our gut told us we could do

this record and so we just barreled ahead and made something that we thought wasn’t being made right now and probably could stand to be seen in the public eye as a good rock record. What significance does the title have for you? I think it represents an action that someone consciously or subconsciously decides to take when faced with some sort of adversity. It’s not necessarily bad and, like using the bathroom, we all do it. It’s universal and it touches many people and many different ways. You self-produced Cope. Did this make a big difference to the sound of the record? We’re always self-producing, we just really took full control over this record because there wasn’t anybody else to do it. We worked with the same team that we always have, we just didn’t have a big name producer come in and sit down with those songs and really form them into something new. We went through most of that process on our own and the songs were already there once we started recording, we just needed to make them sonically what we heard in the live room where we wrote it. You’ve been known to write over 100 songs for an album of 10. That’s a lot of work! How do you let go of songs you’ve written and how do you choose which ones make the final cut? It just sort of happens that way. We really enjoy getting into a room and making something new everyday. If a song doesn’t work with the cohesive idea that we have for the record, then it just doesn’t work. It becomes more and more apparent to us the more songs we write. If it takes 100 songs to find 10 that work together then that’s just what it takes. And plus, once we run out of new songs, we can just sell the old ones that didn’t make it (laughs). ‘After the Scripture’ from Cope was featured in Oscar and Golden Globe winning film Dallas Buyers Club. Did that bring you a lot of attention from new fans? We were probably too busy being giddy schoolgirls about it to notice. We love movies and we were so honored to have our name attached to such an incredible story done by some incredible people shining a light on something our society needs to continue to address and seek out answers to. They deserved every award they received. Which other bands and musicians are you listening to right now? I recently discovered an album by The Boomtown Rats called The Fine Art of Surfacing and I can’t stop listening to it. I’m sure I’m the idiot for having not heard ‘I Don’t Like Mondays’, but honestly I can’t get it out of my head. You’ve been regularly uploading Podcasts and YouTube videos for over 8 years now. Why did you start and will you keep it up? We like using creative outlets to sort of help keep our friends, family and fans attached to us, not just as musicians, but as people. We started really because our old bassist Jay used to always film us doing stupid stuff when we were kids, so we figured he could film us doing stupid stuff as ‘adults’. It’s always fun to film things with friends and I think we all just have this nagging thought in our heads when watching people acting on TV or in movies that is a variation of “I mean, I think I could do that.”

Interview: Rosemarino Rosemarino is an Italian restaurant with an edge. Winners of the Bristol Good Food Awards ‘Best Italian’ and ‘Best Breakfast’ three years running, they leave a lasting impression on their diners. Owners Mirco, Tony and Sam know the Italian cuisine inside out. Their menu is a range of cleverly concocted recipes with a British twist, including items lovingly created by Mirco’s father in Italy. We spoke to the guys about their success and their brand new restaurant in Colston, which opened its doors in July... 60

How did you get started and what is your connection to Italian food? Mirco: We met about ten years ago; we were working for different places and got to know each other. We bought a restaurant and opened in 2006, Goldbrick House on Park Street. Tony was restaurant manager, I was second in command and Sam was supervisor. That’s really where we started. The Italian connection is me, I’m Italian born and bred. The influences are from my family. How will the Colston branch differ to your Clifton restaurant? Sam: The main difference is the kitchen never closes in Colston. You will recognise the breakfast menu from Clifton. The lunch and dinner menus vary slightly. We have two very strong head chefs who like to put their own spin on things. We close the kitchen in Clifton between three and six, but Colston does a few smaller dishes all around the £6 mark during these hours. Tony: We’re also open early in the morning in Colston serving pastries and cakes; you can take these away with a coffee. You can get whatever you desire at any time of the day in the Colston restaurant. Do you think that customers’ experiences differ between visiting independent restaurants and chains? Sam: Absolutely. We are all very hands on ourselves. The staff we work with are great. They’re here because they want to be and they are interested in the business and food and wine. We are rotating our staff between the two sites so you’ll see familiar faces and that is really important for us.

Tony: We are proud to be independent traders. This is our second venture but it is a special feeling being independent. We think it’s really important for us to work in the restaurant too, because then we have that personal touch. People get to know us. Sam: And It doesn’t matter if we’re serving you your bacon butty or a three-course meal, you’ll receive the same high level of service here. What makes you different to Bristol’s other Italian restaurants? Mirco: My Dad looks after the cured meats for the antipasti boards so a lot of the stuff is delivered from Italy. But we’re trying to move away from the first generation of Italian restaurants, to try and do things differently and match the Italian food to an English palette. We try many different flavours and that’s what makes our Italian restaurant unique. Being Italian myself, I am so proud to be able to say, yes it’s Italian but with a twist that is very difficult to find anywhere else! Sam: We think the regional aspect is very important, Italian food varies region to region. Our chefs look at particular regions for inspiration, they don’t just have a general view of Italian food. Tony: And our menu is constantly changing! We have a lot of specials; depending on what’s in season, our chefs will come up with something unique. You also have an exhibition space in your restaurant, how did this idea come about? Sam: We always wanted some artwork on the walls so we found the best way to do that was just offer up the space for free! We recently started working with the Smithson Gallery in Clifton. There are a lot of artists crying out for exhibition space and we are offering it for free, we get some great stuff on the walls and they get to show their work. Where do you source your ingredients? Mirco: We use a lot of local produce, like salad leaves from Severn project and fish from the Cornish Coast delivered daily. And the antipasti, as well as being cooked in-house, the meats are specially selected from Italy. Sam: We also have some pretty unique cheeses coming in from Italy. You won’t find them anywhere else! Tell us about your wine list at Rosemarino… Sam: Our wine list is very important to us. It’s one hundred per cent Italian. We have many different suppliers and we like to support the smaller guys who have a real interest in wines. If you are going to do a wine list from one country, Italy is great. So much diversity from region to region again. Sometimes English people are quite daunted by Italian wines. We all take an interest in wine here so customers can ask us if they have any questions; we love to talk about wine!

What is your favourite dish on the menu and why? Sam: I really like the pappardelle dish. It’s homemade pasta but they’ve chopped fresh tarragon into the pasta before rolling it out. It’s served with a rustic rabbit ragu. It’s a real Rosemarino style dish, and really generous. Tony: We’ve got a really nice risotto on at the moment: crab and prawn risotto. It has quite an interesting little touch of vanilla! It is a really satisfying dish. Mirco: In Clifton they really nailed the Monkfish Tail wrapped in speck. It’s in a light tomato broth with mussels and clams, very summery and finished with fresh chilli and fresh basil. With the sunshine and a glass of white wine, job done! The past three years you have won the Best Italian Restaurant at Bristol Good Food Awards, do you think you can hold onto the title next year? Tony: If we keep doing what we’re doing, why not? Sam: I think if our customers feel that we are worthy of a nomination, then we are happy with that. For me because the nomination comes from the people that dine here, that’s more important than winning. And what is the key to your success here? Mirco: The great staff here play a big part in our success. Without them we wouldn’t be here. We all work very hard. We try to share our love of food and wine with them and so far the staff are staying with us and they want to learn more. We want to pass on our inspiration. Making sure our staff are happy really is the key to our success. If they are happy, customers will be happy too. The only thing we can’t give you is the Mediterranean sunshine! We tried!

Embracing British culture and food with a warm and inviting setting akin to a 1920s dining room, with visual references to Churchill and Dickens, antique grandfather clocks and a cosy concoction of traditional and contemporary. Home-made classics like cloudy lemonade and spotted dick with custard. Service is excellent, striking the right balance between attentive and unintvrusive.

Independent shopping in Bristol: Meet the owners... Thanks to schemes like the Bristol Pound and ‘Bristol Independents’, Bristol is a city that breeds a culture of independent shopping. Home to some of the best independent shops in the UK, there are dozens of fantastic, one-of-a-kinds for Bristol shoppers to explore. Each month we meet the minds behind the city’s best shops to find out what makes independent shopping in Bristol so brilliant. This month, we spoke to Tonya who owns Abode Furnishings, a furniture and homeware boutique stocking an eclectic range of one off pre-loved Vintage and Retro pieces of furniture, accessories and scents for the home.

Tucked away in the historic Clifton Arcade you will find Abode amongst an array of independent stores, each packed with originality. Abode is a vintage gem, which already has a loyal following despite only opening seven months ago. Stepping inside you find yourself surrounded by beautiful items full of character and intrigue. Offering more than just the usual shop service, Tonya is a fountain of knowledge and can find and transform the perfect piece to suit each individual. What was your inspiration for opening Abode? I’ve got a background in fashion design and marketing, I did a degree in London. I’ve always had a really keen interest in restoring things, not throwing things away and the things that have stood 80

the test of time. I think that they always look good, I would prefer to buy something that’s a one off piece than something that is mass-produced. My inspiration is just from doing my own house and having friends liking what I’ve done, and my love of it. I just thought, why don’t I just do it by myself? What sort of items can people expect to find in Abode? Well, it’s an eclectic mix of everything vintage. Anything from soft furnishings, candles right through to vintage chairs, lighting, mirrors. There’s a lot of vintage mixed in with some retro stuff. If somebody comes in and sees something, if they want it altered or a different finish or fabric then I can do that for them. Equally if someone’s looking for something to change a room in their house then they can have a discussion about what they’re looking for and then I will source something.

How do you find all the unique pieces? Sourcing is my background and I tend to go quite far afield to Wales, London, and up North. I have dealers who contact me when they get things in, from long term sourcing. I do get a lot of people from word of mouth. On top of that I go to antique fairs and flea markets really just to see what’s out there. I also get people come in that sadly have lost a relative and they are looking to get rid of a few pieces from their home. I can buy pieces that way if I think it is suitable for the shop and for the customer. Why should shoppers choose vintage or retro items over new pieces of furniture? To save the environment! I just think they are so well made going back in history, the wood is better, the craftsmanship is better and they have lasted so long. Now if you go to a retailer I don’t think the workmanship is as good. It won’t last. It hasn’t got the finish on it you can rework. As a whole we need to be more conscious of this. You can buy an old wardrobe that’s been made for a hundred years or more and you can repaint it, finish it, sand it down and it is just a beautiful piece of furniture that will last. It will last well after we have gone. How does Abode differ to other furniture shops in Bristol? What makes you unique? My customer service. I do have a lot of my regular customers that, even if they are not looking to buy something, will come in and we’ll have a chat about what’s new. They come in if they have an idea about something, we’ll talk about it and I give them lots of inspiration. So people just come in for advice! I don’t think you can get that in a lot of shops. Why did you choose Clifton Arcade? Why is this area special to you? I think the main reason for me is because it’s vintage and retro and has that quirky feel to it. The Arcade is just a beautiful building with fantastic architecture inside. It’s got a lot of history behind it and was closed for years. The management bought it and have redone it and I really like the ethos. For me it was the right environment at the time.

Bristol’s independent retailers are thriving at the moment. Do you think they can survive alongside bigger companies opening? I think so, especially in Clifton, because the only real chains that open up in Clifton are supermarkets. That’s one of the reasons for being in Clifton, it does support independents. I’m not going to lie it is really hard work! But I think if independents don’t keep fighting and people don’t support them it will be a real loss to let the big chains take over. I’m a real believer in, unless I have to, not going to a chain retailer. What does the future hold for Abode? I hope to stay in this shop for a while, I have quite a few regulars now. It’s a great location. It’s safe and if I’m not here people can give the money to the shops next door. That’s what I like about being here. It’s a community. We can do a lot of things in the Arcade; we do music events and I organise string quartets. At the end of September I’m doing a Macmillan coffee morning. We’ll have tables and chairs outside and you can come and drink tea and coffee from vintage cups and saucers.
