Interview: David Gray ‘Babylon’ singer David Gray is back... – and he’s sexing up the dossier!

David Gray captured the world’s attention with his breakout multi-platinum hit White Ladder, featuring Gray’s smash hit single, ‘Babylon’, as well as ‘Please Forgive Me’, ‘Sail Away’, and ‘This Year’s Love’. Fourteen years on and three Number One albums under his belt (White Ladder, A New Day at Midnight and Life in Slow Motion), David Gray’s tenth and latest, Mutineers (released 30th June), finds him steering into unfamiliar territory while cultivating a pugnacious but respectful relationship with his own history. “I think if you’re going forward with an open heart, good things will happen,” says David. “You have to sort of tear up the past and let it go.” Mutineers was recorded in Church Studios, London and produced by Andy Barlow (Lamb), whose brief was to not let Gray “make the same record I’ve made before.” The result is an album that seems to fizz with the joy of its own assembly, “the lovely thing about this is we’ve had the time to experiment, and it’s been wonderful,” says Gray. Coinciding with the release of Mutineers is an eight-date UK and Ireland tour - Gray’s first in three years! Returning to the road in blow-out style, with shows including the Royal Albert Hall, David arrives at Bristol’s Colston Hall on 8th July. Having listened to this record it is clear you’re presenting a different version of David Gray. Were you bored with where you at creatively before this record? Were you frustrated? Where’s this coming from? We’re sexing up the dossier. Is that what we’re doing? That’s why you’re wearing this revealing shirt? Project Sex Up. It’s the David Gray Sexed Up Dossier era. (Laughter) That’s what’s going on. I think when you make records one after the other obviously you finish one, you have ideas in your head but every now and again you end up down a bit of a cul-desac that’s inevitable. You learn ways of making music and you accomplished at doing that and so you fall into a rhythm but suddenly where I was at, on every level, the sort of crucified middle aged man posture. I was sick of that. I was sick of the usual path past the usual trees in my creative landscape, I had to find a new way. I think I’d said all I had to say. That’s how it felt. Was that a scary place to be in? It sounds like a scary place for a guy whose bread and butter is writing songs. I was wary of the tortured artist, exhausted performer routine. Obviously touring and stuff does take it out of you so trying to live a family life, trying to get this impossible balance all the time. I don’t know whether that was a part of it, I felt like I was at the end of something. It was a testing period and the record that I wanted to make had several false starts. I tried something different, then something more familiar. Neither of those felt right. Something again, that didn’t work either. It was about getting the right person. We can talk about my work but I guess it was me as a person as well.

Now where’s the line between getting inventive that way and overthinking the simplicity of a song? The line that I always trot out is ‘If that’s how you want the song to be’ – if I were producing someone else, they’re clinging insecurely to the thing they think is The Song the pure artist statement I’d say – ‘Alright, you’ve got that. That’s yours; you can go home with that one. Let’s try and build something else and if you don’t like it at the end of the week, we go back to the one you had’. What’s to be lost? But it’s a scary place to walk out into, if someone starts cutting the floor out from under you and that is very much what happened in the making of the record.

did on the songs was about simplifying them musically and instrumentally; basically emptying them out and creating the space in order that something else could happen. Any particular future plans for studio stuff or other projects? There were an awful lot of songs left over from the recording of Mutineers. I would love to steal a week or 3 at some point to try and record at least some of them with the new band. I also have a hankering to cut an alt country style record out in Nashville. I would imagine that I might be busy Mutineering for quite some time though...... Will probably need to stop and breathe and catch up with family and friends at some point in the near to mid future too!

Yeah, tell me about the making of the record because this is apparently, this was like World War Three making this record. It’s a guy named Andy Barlow... Yeah, he was in a band called Lamb, an electronic kind of band that did pretty well. He’s sort of gone off on the production thing now. He’s early in his producer career. And he’s not that well known as a producer. No. So why did you choose him? My manager’s instinct was something good could happen, I was looking at bigger name producers but you’re always fitting into someone’s schedule. I need someone who’s sort of going to spend some proper time and I could tell he had the keys to the city, the world of sound. He had a real take on things. He got me to double track everything, which I was a bit like ‘Oh God’. I literally yawned the first time he said that. What difference did Andy Barlow make to the record stylistically? Andy made a huge impact to the sound of the record. Myself and the band provided the songs, playing and instrumentation, the sound was all his. An awful of the lot of the work that we

Interview: Toddla T St Pauls Carnival welcomes dancehall champion Toddla T to the Red Bull Music Academy stage

jerk chicken and rice and peas, and the colourful Masquerade parade which will leave from Portland Square at 12 noon and features over 1,000 participants from local schools and community groups.

This year’s St Pauls Carnival will once again be graced by the almighty Red Bull Music Academy Sound System stage, with a weighty line up including Jazzy B (25 years of Soul II Soul), Bristol’s Redlight playing b2b with Toddla T, and Bristol-Trinidad fusion Jus Now. Since its conception in 1976, St Pauls Carnival has become a staple event in Bristol’s summer calendar, taking over the streets of St Pauls for an annual celebration of African and Caribbean Arts and Culture. The much-loved carnival is expected to attract 100,000 people over the course of the day, with 15 sound systems, markets selling crafts and traditional African and Caribbean foods like

The theme for this year’s St Pauls Carnival is ‘Home – Inna We Yard.’ It is noticeable that the English language is one of the few languages that have two words to distinguish the place we live in – house and home – and that the latter is a very important one for all of us. ‘Home’ means different things to different people but a true sense of home will encompass a feeling of one being at peace. ‘When you are at home, your troubles can never defeat you’ (African Proverb - Cape Coast, Ghana). Once again, the Red Bull Music Academy stage will be broadcasting live from the carnival to their radio station. Featuring high up on the RBMA bill is respected producer and Radio 1 DJ, Tom Bell aka Toddla T, an artist heavily influenced by African and Caribbean music. He first caught our attention in 2009 with his slot for Radio 1’s ‘In New DJs We Trust’, spinning African and Caribbean influenced genres like Dancehall, Reggae, Garage, and UK Grime music. Now he has a regular slot on Radio 1 and is a wellrespected DJ and producer, with a slew of remixes under his belt and associations with likes of Roots Manuva, Tynchy Strider, and his long-term girlfriend and fellow Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac. 11

You started DJing in Sheffield from the age 14. How did that come about? I was buying records from when I was like, 10, ‘cause I just fell in love with hip-hop. I was watching MTV Raps and there was always a DJ in the background and I was like, yeah, I want to be that guy. Then when I got to about 15 I could afford proper turntables and started DJing and blending and scratching properly. It was just basically DJing as well as I could at friend’s dos or parties or whatever. And then when I got older, Sheffield, where I’m from, is quite a small music community so it’s just about having a similar interest in stuff with other people who would invite me to play at their club nights and so forth and that was that really, that’s how it started. Was there much of a dancehall scene there at the time? Well, there’s a scene in any city, but I wasn’t at that time playing dancehall all night. I was moving around, playing all kinds of stuff together. Dancehall and reggae were a big part of it, but it wasn’t like strictly purist dancehall nights that I was doing, it was more a bit of this, a bit of that. I think I’m the first generation of people where it’s acceptable to play house next to reggae, next to hip-hop, next to techno. So many people do that now, but I think the generation before me just did one thing. And then people like me just got into so much stuff, and I think that’s probably again because I’m the first generation to grow up with internet in the house. So I was checking everything out and loving everything and playing it in clubs, and I remember at first people being like, “you can’t do that with that record”, but it’s all music really. As far as a dancehall scene, there is one like everywhere, but it wasn’t really where I was playing, I was just playing in raves really. What’s your attraction to dancehall? When I was growing up raving in Sheffield it was always a part of the night - when you slap down to dancehall - and it sounded really good and really exciting, and sonically really fierce and heavy. And I loved the production. I loved the way that the vocalists would almost rap, I was such a big hip-hop fan that it made a lot of sense to me. But it was a whole new world to discover in terms of lyrics and clothes and topics and things. So I think the combination of the weight of the beats, the heaviness of the rhythms and the MCs being so raw and forward, I just thought it was really special. And then it also just made sense to so much music that I was getting into at the time, like garage and grime and jungle and early dubstep stuff, it all had that root. It just felt like the top of the tree, and so I just kind of delved into it quite deeply and I still love it now. I think it’s something that’s part of so much music we love anyway, it’s just that I kind of went right into the root of it and studied it in terms of buying loads of music and playing loads of music that was dancehall. But I hear it in so many types of music it’s crazy. Now that you’ve got an extended regular slot on Radio 1, do you think that means dancehall is becoming more mainstream? No, I don’t think so. Like I said, I think it’s been in popular music all the way from The Clash, through to Madness through to jungle, though to hardcore, through to deep house, through to grime. It’s there, it’s part of our culture, it’s part of British culture. Jamaican music and sound system music is part of British music whether it’s direct or not. So I think it’s been popular whether it be a straight up reggae record like a Steel Pulse record or UB40 or whatever, but it’s in so many records anyway that it’s normal. So I think me being on Radio 1, I do play a lot of dancehall and reggae and bashment and jungle, but there’s so many other records it’s being represented in anyway in an indirect way. For example, someone like Skrillex wouldn’t have made that sort of music if it wasn’t for reggae and dancehall. Fact - it wouldn’t happen because the root of it is there. So you’ve got Zane Lowe playing that in the daytime. More recently you’ve got Stylo G who’s a massive British dancehall artist, who’s been 12

on the playlist with a real reggae dancehall record. And I think that will continue to come in and out of popular music forever, because it’s part of our culture. It’s part of our musical palette as such. So even if it’s not in a pure sense, I think it will always be popular. Whether it be really forward dancehall, like a Stylo or someone massively influenced by that, like a Chase and Status, or you could even argue a Disclosure has definitely got some roots in reggae in their songs with the big basslines and shuffling hats. What did In New DJs We Trust do for your career? That was an amazing opportunity I was given. To be frank I never planned on getting into radio, I was always just so focussed on being in the studio and making some music and playing in the clubs. And then I was offered to make a demo for In New DJs We Trust and I got the show and I was so surprised and so blown away. I was like, woah this is such an amazing opportunity, so I worked really hard on that show. I used to spend so much time prepping the hour for the month and just went in and tried to be really honest with my musical selection and not water it down and just tried to work really hard at it. I saw a platform and an opportunity that I fell in love with after I got going. I realised how fun and how special radio is. And the things I do through it are just unbelievable, like meeting people, speaking to people intimately for 15 minutes about subjects, interviewing rappers that I grew up on, going abroad to do sessions. These are things that being on radio, or being part of the BBC are just unbelievable and yeah, it was a spring board to getting my own show, and luckily I’m still there. Radio is a big part of my life now, but like I said, it was not something I planned to get into but now it’s rolling it’s incredible. It’s so good. We loved your playlist for last year’s Notting Hill Carnival. Can we expect something similar for St Pauls? Yeah for sure. Carnival is a great way to indulge in that type of music because everyone is up for it more than usual. It’s funny, I’m just in the studio now with Jus Now and we’re making a tune called Propeller; we’re getting ready for Glastonbury but I’m going to release it on Carnival Monday. So right now I’m in carnival zone in terms of music I’m making and who I’m working with, it’s designed for that time of year. And it’s real fun to go in harder on that sound than maybe the rest of the year. I’m playing back to back with Redlight at Carnival, so I need to bear that in mind and make sure it makes sense to what he’s playing. I can’t just lob any records next to another. But yeah, Carnival’s a good time to indulge in that sound and we’ll be doing that again, definitely. You’ve worked with Redlight a fair bit before. How did you first come into contact with each other? We used to have the same manager and then we moved to London at the same time about five years ago. And then we shared a studio unit, where I’m stood right now, for like three or four years called the Roller Express, which is what we named it, and we did a project called that with some songs, and we did a tour with our MCs. He just left in January and got a bigger place and I took over the whole spot. But he became one of my best friends and someone I learnt a lot off, and someone I really respect and rate as a producer. I genuinely think he is solidly the best electronic producer in this country. His records sound amazing. I know him very well ‘cause I spent a lot of time with him in that studio and he really is a perfectionist to some next level, in a way that’s like, I couldn’t do that! But I think that’s how he’s managed to carve out such an incredible sound and why his records ultimately sound better that everyone else’s. So you’ve worked with Redlight and Jus Now, what’s your overall experience of the Bristol music scene? Bristol was one of the first bookings I got outside of Sheffield when I started getting booked to DJ. Tim Dub Boy was the promoter and it was a night called Ruffnek Diskotek in a venue called The Croft. And it was me and Benga, with like a hundred people or something. And I came down and I played, and it was

mental. I could do what I do and not have to compromise or take it a certain way and it just worked so well. And I thought, this is deep because this city seems to be on a similar synergy or wave as Sheffield in a weird way, in terms of our reference points are quite similar; basswave music, it’s reggae sound system music. And from that moment I’ve just loved Bristol, and I always like playing there. Different cities weirdly seem to react to different music, so for example in Scotland it’s more techno hard stuff and in Birmingham it’s more bass-y house, but then you go to Bristol and I really feel like I can do my thing and it’s received very well. I love Bristol and I’ve spent a lot of time there over the years doing gigs. I’ve got some good friends up there now. It’s one of my favourite cities in the country to be honest. You’ve not long released On Acid on Defected, which is much housier than your usual stuff. Are you planning on doing more like it? Maybe. That was a bit of a fluke, that release, to be frank. I made a couple of tunes that had a theme which was the Acid 303 bassline and I played it to someone at Defected just, to be honest, for feedback because I thought if I’m making this sort of music I want to make sure it’s respected right. And my friend at Defected is great person to gauge if I was doing something respectfully to something I don’t normally do. And he really liked it and asked if I wanted to put it out. I was like “wow, that’s crazy. That’s something I really didn’t plan to do but let’s run with it.” And it’s a great home for it. So that’s how that came about. It wasn’t really a conscious decision to make house, in fact, quite the opposite. Because house has got so popular over these last two years, it’s quite overwhelming in terms of the amount of it, and I kind of wanted to steer clear of it and stay in my own lane, but that record just kind of happened. If I make a record I feel is right for Defected, one hundred percent I’d work with them again, it was wicked. But I’m not going to go and do it for the sake of it. Given the right tune I would do it, but I’m not going for it as such. And then ‘I Don’t Wanna Hear That’ due out at the end of June gets back to proper grime. Will African and Carribean influenced music always be your roots? Yeah, I guess growing up when I was old enough to discover my own taste, I got into hip- hip and rap music and then reggae and soul and R&B. And then got into dance music. You know, dance music is kind of second to me more than that. I think that period of your life is most inspiring and sets you up more than any other in a way, not just for music but fashion, your political views, everything. And I think that little era there will probably stay with me forever, so I guess you could say it’s my roots, yeah. Any other big new projects on the horizon? Yeah man definitely, I do the sound system at Carnival here in Notting Hill, so I’m doing an EP to go with the sound, so I’m collaborating with people who are playing on the day. I’m just doing three tracks and keeping it simple, so I’m doing one with Jus Now that I’m finishing today, there’s a track with 2 Bears that features Mr Lexx, who is a big Jamaican artist that I recorded over there in January, and there’s a remix for a UK reggae artist called Tenafly who had releases on a label called Fashion Records. Fashion Records asked me to go into their catalogue and see if I wanted to remix anything and we picked that, and me and Mele have done a remix of it. So that EP is the next release. And also I just finished a remix for Clean Bandits, I put Ce’Cile on it for extra vocals, another Jamaican artist. I’ve got Stylo G on it. So yeah, there’s loads in the box. I’ve got ‘nuff tunes on my computer, it’s just deciding what I want to let off.

Eels make their long-awaited return to Colston Hall as they head out on tour with their new album, ‘The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett’. The new release from the multi- instrumentalist and Eels front man Mark Everett, better known as ‘E’, has been described as “an extraordinarily vivid and intimate document of a personal struggle”. Eels first made waves with their debut album ‘Beautiful Freak’. Filled with melancholy songs with tormented lyrics like ‘Novocaine for the Soul’, ‘Susan’s House’ and ‘ Your Lucky Day in Hell’, the album brought them acclaim and a fanbase across the globe. 25th July // Colston Hall // www.colstonhall.org

Since forming in 1995 in California, Eels have straddled a variety of genres over their 11 album output. ‘The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett’ contrasts with the high-octane rock and roll of their previous work. Inspired by Everett’s loss of love and subsequent regret, it couples a bare-bones lyrical intimacy with a live orchestra that lends a stunning backdrop to the brutal insights of the lyrics.

Summer Americana... Originally developed as an alternative radio format to mainstream country music in the USA, what we call ‘Americana’ is now a genre in its own right, encompassing much of the most popular ‘roots’ music of today.

A

mericana is also all about authenticity, and this summer St George’s has two of the most authentic acts you could wish for. Hell, Rosanne Cash (30 July) isn’t just the eldest daughter of the late Johnny Cash, the fabled Man in Black, Sun recording-artist and all-round American legend; her step-momma was June Carter Cash from O Brother Where Art Thou-inspirations the Carter Family. Rosanne is also 100% American classic herself: a published author who writes for the New York Times, and whose latest album, The River and the Thread, is widely regarded as a masterpiece. As one of a tiny handful of UK dates, this is going to be very special.

Carolina Chocolate Drops (20 August) have got so much tradition behind them they’re almost nineteenth century, only much more fun. An African-American string band specialising in fiddle and banjo ‘breakdown’-music associated with the post-slavery society of North and South Carolina, the group combine singing and playing with flatfoot-dancing, rattling bones-percussion and hog-calling vocal grunts, in what Rolling Stone described as “dirt-floor dance electricity.” And yee-haw to that.

Come and have your St George’s moment. Visit our website and sign up for email newsletters today.

Featured artist - Tim Lane Tim is a contemporary fine artist living and working in Bristol. Tim Graduated from Falmouth College of Art in 2004 with a first class BA (Hons) Illustration. Tim’s degree helped to give structure to his love for working directly from his imagination and also encouraged a passion for drawing, which is at the core of all his work. For the past two years Tim has been working on Amina Mundi which is a 5 metre long graphite drawing which folds down into an A5 concertina book. Thanks to a successful kickstarter campaign Anima Mundi is being published as a Limited Edition bookwork and presented in an exhibition of the same name at Antlers Gallery.

Article by: James Koch

Tim’s anachronistic style takes strong influence from Classic Literature and World Mythologies. The consideration of Myth, provides a structure of multi-layered, open narrative that inspires highly symbolic imagery which seeks to explain the world in a visceral, imaginative, dark way, often with an animalistic element. Current Exhibition: Anima Mundi - Purifer House, Lime Kiln Road, Bristol, BS1 5AD Open 5-27July 2014,10–6pm

Interview: Slow Club We talk to the Sheffield duo about their “career -defining” new album, Complete Surrender. Catch their brand new tour this month at The Fleece, 17th July.

Interviewer: What was your first impression of Charles?

label into something altogether their own.

Rebecca: I just thought he was nice. He liked indie music and I was one of those girls who wanted to talk to people about music all the time, so I was just thrilled to have a new person to talk to on MSN. Wait, what did he say about me?

“That whole twee thing was never something that we’d actually seek out,” Charles tells us. “That’s just what people put on us.”

Interviewer: He said you were loud! Rebecca: Ahh, well he’s loud. Oh okay, well he was a geek! Hah, fuck you Charles!

Heading to The Fleece this month is Sheffield’s boy-girl duo, Slow Club. Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor started the band when they were both still teenagers, after meeting through a mixed-school music project. Initially, they occupied a very folky sound, but with their new album, Complete Surrender, due for release July 14th, they’ve almost certainly transcended that 48

The duo released their endearingly ramshackle debut album, Yeah So in 2009, with Charles on the guitar, vocals and piano; and Rebecca on drums, vocals, and guitar. Their second album released two years later, put forward a much bigger, more grown-up sound than before, with a drummer and bassist added to the repertoire. The album, Paradise, got listeners wondering, was this really folk? Or was it something else? “I think we just wrote different songs and presented them in a different way,” says Charles. Their forthcoming album returns with the same set up (with a new bassist) and it seems like they’ve finally hit their stride. “I guess it’s probably a bit more structured. Less frantic!” says Charles. “We’ve been given the time to get better,” Rebecca explains.

“In a way, if we’d done really well and catapulted to stardom on the first record, we’d be pigeon holed into this one thing.” The Slow Club sound, you could say, is all about this progression and a meeting in the middle of different sounds and influences. “Me and Charles both like very, very different music, but we unite on some things. The things that we both agree are great become the bed of reference, and then he’ll bring something that I’ve not heard and I’ll bring something that I like, and then we’ll argue until we’ve got a song!” “There’s always fights, definitely,” agrees Charles. “But I suppose that’s the nature of our band. The songs that we write together are a result of us both trying to pull a different direction. It’s not necessarily an easy process, but I think it pulls the songs into this place in-between us both that people know as Slow Club, rather than just being two solo artists.” It’s tempting to fantasise that there is more than just friendship between the pair, but they both insist that there has never been any romantic link. “No. Never has been, no.” assures Rebecca. So is ‘When I Go’, an adorable track from Yeah So about marriage pacts about their relationship together? “No. Well, I deffo won’t marry him and he deffo won’t marry me. It’s more that we had very similar teenage years really, and you had those sort of pacts with people all the time. If you fancied someone it was just one way to flirt with them, I suppose. Although, my best friend John, I would actually happily marry him one day if he can’t do better, but he’s got a really hot and beautiful girlfriend so that’s probably off the cards.”

Charles and Rebecca formed Slow Club in 2005 and started gigging at a time when Arctic Moneys dominated the Sheffield music scene with their explosive release of, Whatever You Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not in 2006, which became the fastestselling debut album in British music history. “We didn’t really fit into that whole Arctic Monkeys thing at the time,” says Charles. “I guess there’s always a couple of different things happening at any one time, and we never really crossed paths with anyone like that at the time anyway.” But that didn’t stop them gigging prolifically with their own brand of folky pop. Rebecca recounts, “There wasn’t really much going on like that, at the very start we were quite folky. but that only meant that we could play at open mic nights and quite easily we could set up and play anywhere. Sheffield is really accommodating if you’re in a band and you want to play. There’s lots of places you can play and they’ll even pay you! You’d get paid for how many people come through the door.” It was a gig with US band Tilly and the Wall that eventually brought them to the attention of Moshi Moshi Records, who released their first album. Now, their sound is harder define, “I sing songs about how I feel with a guitar,” says Rebecca. “What I’ve realised I tell people in bars is that I like to think we’re the new Fleetwood Mac. Because there’s a shared lyricist and it’s pops songs really, but with guitars and keyboards. I mean, who knows how to answer that unless you’re like a rapper or I don’t know, a rock band, but who’s a rock band anymore? That’s not a very clear answer, but that’s the answer I’d give you if I was trying to chat you up!” When it comes to writing together, Charles tells us, “We both 49

write. We sometimes write together, but more often than not we write apart and we kind of finish a song together. So we’ll get an idea for a song lyrically or a chord progression or something. And then we normally sit down and finish it very quickly once the general idea is there.”

folds and what they’re doing, because it is amazing. There’s lots you can do.”

Their musical influences can differ hugely for a pair with such synergy, “Leonard Cohen had a really big effect on me as a young kid, weirdly”, Charles tells us, while Rebecca was influenced hugely by The Carpenters, before getting obsessed with Destiny’s Child because of their use of harmonies. The fundamental ones though, she tells us, are Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, The Beatles and The Beach Boys. Right now, she can’t stop listening to the new album from Lykke Li, “I can’t seem to wake up without thinking about putting it on.”

“I sort of feel like now our gigs are a series of numbers that we’re each stepping up to do,” Rebecca agrees. “I like that about it. I feel like it’s a performance every night.”

Both are multi-instrumentalists, with formidable voices. And although they’ve added a drummer and bassist to the band, Charles and Rebecca are keen to tell us that they both still play on the record. “I’m playing electric piano which I’ve never really done before,” says Charles. “We’re all trying to play the new record. The new record is actually a lot easier to play than the last one, so we’re having a lot more fun. It was a bit of a mindfuck trying to play the last one.” Although Rebecca says she keeps threatening to play the drums live in someone else’s band, stepping away from the drum kit on stage has given her the chance to really show off the range of her voice. As a teenager, she took part in lots of musicals and singing lessons, “I’m kind of interested to get vocal training again because I’d be interested to see what I could do if I tried. I miss that science of thinking about the vocal

Talking about their new album, Complete Surrender, Charles tells us, “I feel like we’ve both found our own voices a bit more on this one. There’s not as much two part harmonies all the way.”

Their new tour, kicking off this month, is the first time audiences will get to see the new album in full, arriving at The Fleece on the 17th July. “We haven’t as this line up had enough time to rehearse,” says Rebecca. “And now we’re going to America, so we get back and then we do a week of intensive rehearsal, then we go on tour. So, I think it will be fun, ‘cause we’ll be as surprised as you. We’ll do all the new album. I’ve got some new clothes - so I’ll wear those! “I love Bristol though. One of my best friends ever, James, lives in Bristol. Usually I make him meet me and spend every minute with me until I leave. I do love Bristol as a city. I would move there if I had a job! I love it. I love everyone I’ve met from there. Your galleries are really nice and your shops are nice, you’ve got poncey coffee shops, and you’ve got a good record shop, Rise, it’s great!” 17th July // The Fleece, Bristol slowclubband.com Interview by Rachel Morris 51

DIRTY FUNK SYNDICATE

Independent shopping in Bristol: Meet the owners... Thanks to schemes like the Bristol Pound and ‘Bristol Independents’, Bristol is a city that breeds a culture of independent shopping. Home to some of the best independent shops in the UK, there are dozens of fantastic, one-of-a-kinds for Bristol shoppers to explore. Each month we meet the minds behind the city’s best shops to find out what makes independent shopping in Bristol so brilliant. This month, we spoke to Méibh O’Connor Morse who owns Iota (page 115), a brilliant little home accessories and gift shop on the Gloucester Road.

iota Iota is one of those shops you could easily spend an hour browsing. It’s not like those generic gift shops with neat rows of the same product in different colours. Rather, as Méibh tells us, it’s the antidote to the “Keep Calm and Carry Ons” of the industry. The shop is thoughtfully curated, with Méibh hunting down only items she really wants to sell, not just those that she thinks will. She’s never off duty and shows us a collection of lovely pure wool Tweedmill blankets she recently spotted on holiday (much 100

to the annoyance of her husband) and had to have in the shop. Running an independent shop, it’s important to keep things interesting Méibh tells us, particularly in a place like Gloucester Road, which proudly wears the crown as the longest stretch of independent shops in the UK. As such, Iota’s stock is everchanging from week to week, so it’s always worth popping in to find something new and delighting. Iota’s ethos is to sell beautiful things at affordable prices; design-led homewares without the price tag so that everybody can make their spaces interesting without paying over the odds. Méibh knows her mark-ups aren’t what they should be, with some well-known retailers selling the same items with swollen price tags. She gives us one example of a popular homeware and gift retailer selling an item for £9.99 that you’ll find in Iota for £6.99. But perhaps that’s the kind of thing that’s earned them such a loyal fan base over their 12 years of trading.

How did you get started? I had worked casually in shops many, many years ago and then I started buying for other people. And when I would go to trade fairs I kept a little note book of all the things I would like to sell one day. And when we moved to Bristol, we were walking through St Nicholas Market and they had those little self contained units out the back. We went and had a look and had a chat with the manager, and it was like 50 quid a week rent. So we borrowed £1000 from my husband’s mum and went off to London and just bought stock. And suppliers were really sweet because usually everything is sold in sixes or twelves, and I was like, “could I just have one of those please?” So we started really, really small. It was like the Elves and the Shoemaker, if I sold that one thing I was then able to then go and buy two more, and so on. Then we just grew it and after a year we moved into a bigger place in St Nicks, then after three years we moved to Gloucester Road a bit further down, and then moved to this one which gives us a bit more breathing space. I’ve always said I only want to sell stuff I really like, so if I’m at trade fairs and I think ooh, wow I quite fancy that in my home, or jewellery or bags or whatever, I’ll stock it. What kind of things can customers expect to find in store? We do a broad mix. When we started we just did interior accessories, so housewares and mirrors and clocks and that kind of thing. And then over the years it’s evolved to include jewellery and cards and more general giftware, but trying to find things that are just a little bit different that are still design-led, but without the big design price tag so people can make their spaces look nice, but don’t have to fork out the very high gallery kind of price for stuff.

What’s unique about Iota? It’s a very eclectic collection of stuff, I think. It’s not prescribed. We have such a real turnover of stock and new lines, and if I’m bored of something I’ll just stop. I try and keep things fresh so it’s always surprising. People will come in Monday one week and then come in Monday the next week and go, “oh my god, you’ve got loads of new stuff!” Tell us about your tagline, “Antidote to the Anodyne” In a lot of places you get kind of the bandwagon, for instance “Keep Calm and Carry On”, you know? And suddenly all the shops are doing it, everything with Keep Calm, and Keep Drinking... And so there’s kind of an anodyne thing to that - that nobody’s really thinking about it, they’re just going “oh, well that’s going to sell. That’s where it is at the moment.” So it’s just trying to bring in stuff that’s different and isn’t what Joe Bloggs is selling two doors down. And it’s also important, I think, on a road like this that we keep everything different and try not to step on other people’s toes. Again, it’s about keeping things exciting. I’ve been doing this now for sixteen years and if I didn’t keep it exciting I’d be bored as hell! You’re part of the longest stretch of Independent Shops in the UK. Why do you think independent shopping is so successful in Bristol? I just think it’s a really special city. My daughter is at secondary school and the RWA have a big exhibition on boats at the moment, and they got all of the schools involved, making boats and being part of this exhibition of proper art, if you like, and that just sums up Bristol for me. It’s a city where everybody belongs to everything and it’s really inclusive and really nice. And everybody is very proud of it and everybody wants to support it, so it becomes this self-fulfilling thing. I don’t know what it is - it’s intangible! But it’s really special. 102

Why do you think it’s important to keep that culture of Independents alive? Ooh, because we don’t want to end up like... I went to Florida last year and there was this kind of awful mall out-of-town culture, where everybody gets in their cars and drives to the mall. We went to a few and we were like, have we been here before? No, no, it’s just identical to the one down the road. And it was depressing. It was really depressing. We’re all different, people are different, and to offer all of us the same thing it just seems mad, and again, a bit depressing. It frightens me! We need a bit of unique. What’s your favourite thing about Gloucester Road? I can’t say one thing! The people. The people make it, I guess. The other shop keepers and the customers. You always find you have a link with someone. It doesn’t feel like living in the city, it feels very, very village-y in a good way. Why should readers pop into Iota of the summer? Because we just have the nicest stuff! And even if people aren’t buying anything, sometimes it’s just nice to come in and have a wander. It’s really nice around here as well, you’ve got loads of cafes dotted around so you can just pop in, have a coffee, have a wander.
