Interview: Newton Faulkner We talk to Brit-nominated acoustic guitar virtuoso about his new album Studio Zoo ahead of his sold out show at the Colston Halll...
Since topping the UK album charts in 2007 with his doubleplatinum debut album Hand Built By Robots, Newton Faulkner has become one of the world’s most famous acoustic guitarists. Newton Faulkner’s distinctive style of percussive guitar playing has intrigued and enchanted millions. Alone on a stage, it can sound as though he is accompanied by a full band. It’s hard to believe that he isn’t using loops and effects while he’s playing, but as Newton tells us, there’s actually “very little trickery” to what he does. This was part of the reason for his latest project, Studio Zoo. Studio Zoo was recorded and produced in just 5 weeks in front of a live audience who could watch as Newton streamed the entire process online live from his home, 24 hours a day. For the first time, his fans were able to watch how he produces his unique sounds and see first hand that it really is just him and a bunch of guitars. Newton’s home was fitted with four cameras which streamed live 24/7 for five weeks. Viewers could interact with Newton via twitter on #StudioZoo and access bonus clips, including some extraordinary footage of Newton performing at Glastonbury filmed from a camera attached to the bass of his guitar. 6
Recording an album in this way gave fans a unique opportunity to influence the album as it was being created. Newton regularly asked viewers for their input and says he got into trouble for trying to add too much to tracks, “People got angry about shakers! It was crazy.” His fans wanted a really stripped back guitar album, which was a challenge Newton says really enjoyed, as it forced him to turn his guitar playing up a notch. The result is another outstanding album. While five weeks is an incredibly short time to produce a full album, the quality does not suffer one bit. In fact, his vocals are better than ever. At the time, Newton had just broken up with someone so he had a lot to get off his chest, he explains. Although he has produced tracks on previous albums, this is the first whole album Newton has produced by himself, doing the whole thing from his home studio without the help of an engineer or producer; only himself and a few special guests, including Mumford and Sons’ Ted Dwane, and Nick Harper. Newton brings his Studio Zoo tour to Bristol’s Colston Hall at the end of this month. Audiences can expect a mix of tracks from all four albums, and for the first time ever Newton will be
accompanied on stage by some additional instrumentation, “The album has a different vibe, so I’ve changed the vibe of the live show a little bit.” What was the idea behind the Studio Zoo project? It was just a fun experiment! It started out as a very small concept. We wanted to stream a bit of the recording to show that it is just me playing my guitar and to show that there is very little tricky with the way that I do it. It’s incredibly simple in a lot of ways. So it was just a way of getting that across. It was originally just going to be one camera. We were thinking along the lines of webcam and then it just grew and grew, and went from being an hour once a week in the evening, to being 24 hours a day for 5 weeks. But it was amazing fun. So it was originally just to dispel any ideas that you were using loops and things? Yeah - did you see what I posted on instagram about an hour ago? I just posted a video from rehearsals of me goofing around. It’s kind of a mixture weird guitar, kick drum and foot pedal - it’s so confusing! It’s not actually going to be in a song, it’s too hard, but I just wanted to document it. Was it difficult being under constant surveillance for five weeks? I just had so much to do that I didn’t really have time to be phased by it. I mean, if you just put cameras in my house and told me to go about my daily business it would be a nightmare and I’d be really nervous. But because it was, ‘okay, there are cameras in the house, but you also need to make an album
in five weeks’ there wasn’t time to feel awkward about it. I think the most award bit was when the cameras first came on ‘cause I was freaking out. When they went live and I was showing people around the house. It was really awkward, but then as soon as I started actually recording guitar parts it was fine. I’m used to people watching me play guitar, that’s fine. But people watching me eat breakfast, that’s kind of a different story. Were there any really surreal moments with people sending in weird comments? Some of the strangest things were first thing in the morning. You just wake up and it’s like, ‘Okay, must remember do not leave room naked’. So you put pyjamas on and start walking down the stairs and by the time you’ve gotten to the bottom of the stairs you’ve got a bunch of people saying hello. It’s just bizarre! It was amazing. Did the process affect the finished album with things like audience feedback? I think it definitely did! The album turned out exactly how I wanted it to because I wanted to do what the fans had always wanted anyway, that was part of the whole plan. Because one of the main criticisms from my hardcore fan base was that the stuff I was doing live had so much space in it and the arrangements were full enough that it sounds like a record, but then whenever I did a record I put loads of other stuff on it. So they wanted pretty much just guitar. I got told off for trying to add things to tracks. I was like, this 7
could do with a shaker, just one shaker. Then I’d look at the camera and be like “can I put a shaker on there?” And I’d get loads of people saying “NO! No goddamn shakers!” People got angry about shakers. It was crazy. And other times, I’d ask does it need piano and people would tell me, “don’t touch it, stop messing with it!” So it made it kind of rawer. Yeah, the album was a reaction to what people had said in its conception. I really enjoyed the challenge of doing an album with just guitar and very little else, because it meant I had to push my playing up a notch. This is the first album you have produced by yourself, isn’t it? Did this have an effect on the overall sound? I’ve done a couple of bits on other albums, the odd track, but never to this scale. It meant that I could make it sound however I wanted, within my own limitations. I knew what I was going for, I knew the guitar sound that I wanted. I wanted it to just feel incredibly real. Also everything that was coming out at that time just sounded really harsh to me. That was the way radio was going, it’s the way everything was going, and at the top end it was really brutal. And I just didn’t like it. So I did something that was the polar opposite. The guitar sounds are really soft and it’s almost cassette-esque, I guess. I just wanted it to sound nice. I wasn’t trying to follow any trend or trying to keep up with anything, I just thought I’m just going to do exactly what I do and put some mics near me. It was good, because the whole thing was streamed live, no one can really A&R it. You’re an incredible instrumentalist. What comes first when you’re songwriting? The music or the lyrics? I try not to have a pattern, because I think if I did everything would start sounding the same. I quite like doing it a different way every time. This album, because of the time constraints on the writing, did mean that I mainly did guitar parts first because we had very little time to write it. I had lots of ideas and stuff floating around, but then I was told I had to deliver the album in five weeks. It’s strange the way it came about, because I had a bunch of touring; I had an Australian tour, a European tour and I had a thing in Japan, and I was told just before I left Australia that they wanted the album done by the time I got back from Japan. I think I had 9 days off in total! So I wrote the whole album in 9 days. I had no choice because the cameras went in when I got back. The amount of pressure was insane! But as you can tell from most of the lyrics, I had just broken up with someone and there was a lot to get out of my system. Would you say your sound has changed much since Hand Built by Robots? Yeah, it’s a very different album to Hand Built. It’s almost going back to what I was doing before I did that album. I kind of went back to my roots! I’m trying to learn to play the guitar at the moment. Any tips? Just mess around with it. It’s fine! I’ve never really learned properly. I mean, instead of practicing and doing non-musical exercises, I’ve always written things that are really hard. So instead of ever doing the practicey-practicey thing, I’ve always written things that have focussed on the weakest areas of my playing. I don’t know if that will work, I haven’t met anyone else that does it. I know lots of people that learn lots of pieces and I’ve never learnt an instrumental guitar piece - ever! Even the bit of guitar which got me into playing guitar, I still haven’t learned. It was just a spring board to a million ideas. I’m just now trying to go back and fill in the holes in my knowledge.
I kind of bypassed normal playing. It came from one particular instance, where there were loads of guitarists sitting around, I think we were outside the electric theatre in Guildford on the steps. And they were doing normal things and everyone there was really good, and someone did something that they had put hours and hours and hours into getting right and it was really impressive, it was perfect, but then I did something that was just a bit weird and everyone went “Woah, what was that? How are you doing it?” And I went, “it’s just a slappity-bobbity thing.” People were so impressed by something that was just a bit weird and I thought, wow -this is much easier! You’ve had phenomenal success as an artist. What’s been the biggest moment of your career so far? There’s been so much stuff, endless weird memories, it’s hard to pick one. I did a gig in a hot air balloon once. That was one of my weirdest days because it was my birthday and then I went up in a hot air balloon, did a gig in the hot air balloon, and then I landed and was given a double platinum disk. I thought, this is not real life! And there was New Year’s Eve a few years ago when I was asked by a Japanese band to guest with them on stage on Japan’s biggest TV show, which was insanely huge. I was doing that and then the music for Auld Lang Syne started and I was like, oh good I know this, it won’t be too awkward (Newton starts singing Auld Lang Syne) and by the time I got to ‘acquaintances’ I realised everyone else was singing in Japanese. And the guy next to me had his arm around my back and I had my arm around him. But I found out he was an absolute legend in Japan, like an absolute mega star, and I was just hugging him and singing all the wrong words. I did that thing where you wait to see what the vowel sound is and try and join in. It was the weirdest evening of my life! You worked with a few special guests on the new album. Did you have a favourite? Ted (Dwane) was amazing. I didn’t doubt him, but I didn’t know what to expect because we really had to squeeze him in. I was so excited that he could do it, but we only had a really small window. He came in the day before mastering and completely nailed it. How close was streaming live to performing live? It definitely bridged a gap. Because you have got an audience, you’ve got people listening, and you’re getting a response from all the online social media stuff. At no point did you forget, you’re always kind of aware of it. I actually found it quite nice. The strangest part of the whole process was the end. It went from having loads of people in my house and working all the time, to being finished and having no cameras. And because there were no cameras there were no people. And I just remember sitting in the house on my own and being like, does anyone want to Skype? We’re looking forward to your tour in February. What can your fans expect from the gig? The album has a different vibe, so I’ve changed the vibe of the live show a little bit. We’ve got little bits of other instrumentation, which is going to be nice because I’ve been completely on my own on stage for a very long time. Just sprinkles of harmony, a little bit of bass cello, but it’s really spaced out. And there’s a mix of stuff from all the albums.

Smoke & Mirrors Open 6 days a week with live music every weekend and great drink deals all week. It’s free entry into the pub and every last Thursday of the month you can see award winning magicians perform great magic up close in an intimate 50 seat venue. Smoke & Mirrors is located directly behind the Bristol Hippodrome, by the stage door.
Matthew Wright Matthew is one of the most celebrated magicians not only in the UK but all across Europe. He has won more awards than his friends can bear to listen to him list and his crazy comedy character has resulted in people describing
him as “an autistic Doctor Who"

7TH & 8TH FEBRUARY
COMEDY MAGIC SHOWS Kockov - a Monrokvian master mind reader and magician - had the crowd in the palm of his hands when he took to the stage of the Smoke and Mirrors boutique magic theatre pub. Dressed in eye-wateringly tight leather trousers, with a mullet that many 80's pop stars would be proud of, Kockov - aka Jasper Blakeley - performed a non-stop repertoire of mind bending tricks. But his magic routines are just part of the show as unlike some other magicians, Kockov makes his magic and illusions side splittingly funny. He had the audience in stitches with his off the cuff remarks and outrageous humour.

Featured artist - Penny Tristram Penny studied drawing at Camberwell and now works from her studio at Bristol’s Hamilton House. She regularly exhibits in Bristol and London, as well as teaching figure drawing classes in the South West. Her paintings are available as originals, giclee prints, and commissioned pieces. Penny is keen to discover the many ways in which figurative art and portraiture are relevant to the culture and politics of the present day. She works in acrylics to produce bright, unusual pieces that are about human identity expressed through digital culture. She loves memes, bold self-expression, and the zany universe of online fan art.
Article by: James Koch, photographer & curator www.jameskochphotography.com @dont4getthesun
Penny is not just concerned with human portraiture; My Little Pony figures have found their way onto canvas through her brush. Bright images of these cult plastic toys will spark the imagination of the viewer by playing with scale and perspective. Painting her own My Little Ponies kept from childhood, she finds that these figurines are designed to display personality, allure, and big-eyed cute factor. Current Exhibition: Venue: The Canteen, 80 Stokes Croft, BS1 3QY Dates: 1st Feb - 28th Feb Opening times: Monday - Thursday 10am - 12pm Friday & Saturday 10am - 1pm Sunday 10am - 12pm

Independent shopping in Bristol: Meet the owners... Thanks to schemes like the Bristol Pound and ‘Bristol Independents’, Bristol is a city that breeds a culture of independent shopping, allowing the quirkiest and most exceptional shops to thrive...
Dig Haushizzle is a unique homeware and furniture store, selling antique and vintage pieces which have been handpicked by owner Cassie and her partner Edd. Located at the top of the Christmas Steps, Dig Haushizzle has become very much a destination shop in Bristol. Set foot inside and you’ll find it hard to leave within the hour. The deliberately dingy, rough-luxe style shop is a treasure trove of unusual and unexpected pieces, with a distinct Victoriana and industrial theme throughout. The space is carefully curated by the pair and visitors will find anything from old taxidermy, industrial tables and chairs, indonesian crowns; to books, artwork, mirrors and lighting. 98
Looking around, it’s not hard to believe that Cassie’s unique style has landed them a number of interior design jobs outside of their usual remit, including one very high profile celebrity’s new home in London. Luckily for the people of Bristol, Cassie is happy to give advice in store and tells us that people coming into the shop should never be shy of asking. Interiors are clearly something she is passionate about and she finds genuine pleasure in helping individuals find the right pieces for their home. While it’s by no means a cheap shop, there are things to suit every budget in Dig Haushizzle and even those on a minimal budget can find something to transform their home; whether it’s a Victorian taxidermy dome with 13 exotic birds in it, or a vintage-look filament light bulb at less than £20. The shop is definitely worth a visit - even if only to satisfy your curiosity - we can almost guarantee you’ll find something you want to buy. With Edd joining Cassie in the store full time from February, it’s an exciting time for Dig Haushizzle. Expect even more extraordinary stock in store, plus big plans for extending the website - dig-haushizzle.co.uk.
What’s the story behind Dig Haushizzle? It started about 3 years ago - I was working in retail, but wanted to do something a bit more creative so I started restoring furniture and selling it online. Then we did a pop-up shop with Antlers Gallery in Cabot Circus and it was amazing. That was when we realised that we could actually do this as a business rather than a hobby. So we started working towards actually having a shop buying more pieces, slowly learning more about antiques and vintage. Do you have a background in antiques or have you always just had an eye for it? I studied fashion photography, so I was always much more
interested in fashion, art, things like that. It wasn’t until I bought a flat and started doing it up I realised, actually, fashion interiors are exactly the same thing. Just maybe a better way to spend your money sometimes because you can have it for much longer. How do you and your partner Edd run the business between you? Edd was actually veterinary nurse and was training when we started. He has always supported and helped me, but literally he just quit his job three days ago to come and work here full time. So he’ll be here from February, which means hopefully double the amount of stock coming in and the website should grow quite a lot too.
You do a bit of interior design on the side as well don’t you, is that part of the service? At the moment it’s a side thing, but I think in time it will become part of the business. We help lots of people with mainly styling of houses at the moment, and we’ve done a few interior sheets and things like that. When people come into the shop I try and give as much of my experience out as possible because I’m forever looking at blogs, books, magazines, etc. So I feel I’ve got a lot to give in interior knowledge. Although I have no actual training in interior design, I feel I’ve got something to offer. So I think in time we might start helping people do room plans, things like that, and show them other places they can get ideas and other pieces that will fit in with things from here. A lot of people are a bit scared to ask, but we’re honestly very happy to help as much as we can. Is there a concept behind Dig Haushizzle? We buy what we like, that’s the main concept. But Edd and I really differ on what we like -I love Victoriana, I love anything like black ebonised furniture, taxidermy, anything that’s probably going to be a house filled with too much stuff! That’s what I like. Edd’s much more into design pieces and mid-century masonic chairs, things like that. So it kind of mixes together, two people buying what they like, but luckily it kind of fits! 100
Where did the name come from? It came about during the design process. I was working with James Watkins, who is such a great graphic designer, and we were sat at his computer. It was just called Dig at the time, but it wasn’t quite enough. Then we had ‘house’, and we thought if we use the German spelling that just looks cool. Then we realised, “Shizzle! Haushizzle! We sell sh*t for houses!” And that was it. What kind of things can people expect to find in store? People can expect to find something much more individual. They are going to find something that will be a statement piece in their home. And you build from that. There are things that don’t stand out so much as well, we’ve got lots of tables and chairs which are going to be very practical, but also stand the test of time. Hopefully that they’ll still have in 30-50 years.
