Slapstick festival:
Bristol’s 10th annual festival of silent & classic screen comedy Friday 24th - Sunday 26th January 2014 This month, Bristol City Centre will be taken over by the 10th Anniversary celebration of Slapstick Festival. Barry Cryer, Omid Djalili, all three members of The Goodies, Harry Hill, Python Terry Jones, Phill Jupitus, Paul McGann, Lucy Porter and Tim Vine are among the celebrity entertainers who will be in Bristol in from January 24 to 26 to help the city’s annual festival of silent and vintage screen comedy - Slapstick - to celebrate its 10th birthday and kick-start a global series of events marking the centenary of Charlie Chaplin’s best-loved character: the Little Tramp. Around 5,000 people from all parts of the UK and beyond are expected to attend Slapstick 2014 which 10 years on from its creation is now the biggest event of its kind in Britain and recognised internationally as one of the top comedy film festivals in the world. One highlight of the festival’s 10th birthday edition will be a gala screening of Chaplin’s 1931 silent masterwork, City Lights, accompanied live by a 39-piece orchestra – the biggest to ever feature at a Slapstick event - playing Chaplin’s own score for the film. Others include the premiere of ‘lost’ material starring Buster Keaton; Harry Hill making his Slapstick debut; Tim www.slapstick.org.uk // Friday 24th - Sunday 26th January 2014
Vine encouraging a fresh look at the comedy of Benny Hill; Nick Park sharing the best slapstick antics of his Oscarwinning creation Gromit; discussions about Chaplin and the Great War, his enduring appeal and the Tramp as a global icon and a screening of Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life, introduced by its director, co-writer and star, Terry Jones. Festival director Chris Daniels says: “We’re thrilled that so many of today’s top comedy performers want to be part of Slapstick’s 10th birthday celebrations and of our centenary salute to one of the greatest comedy characters of all time, Chaplin’s Little Tramp. Ten years ago, Slapstick was a tiny event struggling to keep the love of classic comedy alive. Now people of all ages come from all over, knowing that they’ll get a weekend full of laugh-out-loud enjoyment in the company of some of our best known and best loved entertainers!” Slapstick is a not-for-profit venture run mainly by volunteers. Tickets for all Slapstick 2014 events are on sale now via www.slapstick.org.uk as well as participating venues: Arnolfini, Bristol Old Vic, Colston Hall and Watershed.

Featured artist - Ged Palmer
Article by: James Koch, photographer & curator www.jameskochphotography.com @dont4getthesun
Bristol-based artist and typographer Ged Palmer specialises in custom lettering, calligraphy and hand-painted signs. Having cut his teeth painting graffiti murals in his younger days, Ged went on to study graphic design and his interest turned to typography and the history of the written word. Today he works for a variety of national and international clients such as The Folio Society, Phillips and The National Youth Orchestra of GB. He has also worked locally with The Gallimaufry on Gloucester Rd, for which he designed the identity and hand- painted the signage with fellow sign painter James Cooper (aka Dapper Signs). www.gedpalmer.com.
When asked what drives his practice, Ged replied “I’m interested in traditional techniques, seeing design as a trade which requires a keen eye and steady hand”. Ged’s work has been recognised by The International Society of Typographic Designers, The Type Directors Club
and various design publications. He is currently based in Bristol and hopes to move to London in 2014 to pursue sign painting and design. For regular updates to follow Ged on Intsagram (@gedpalmer) and for more examples of his work visit www.gedpalmer.com.

Interview: Peace
Harry Koisser and Doug Castle talk to us before their headline show at Anson Rooms.. 2013 was an incredible year for Peace. Having released their debut album In Love and headlining their first UK tour, the four-piece band from Worcester have received huge critical acclaim. Most notably from NME, who in the past year have put them on the cover of NME Magazine, on the NME Awards tour and nominated them ‘Best New Band’ of 2013. The genre-blending band are the centre of much hype on the new music scene. Although they have been compared to bands like Primal Scream, Foals and The Macabees, there is a feeling of something altogether new and exciting about Peace. Harry tells us “everything stems back to The Beatles”, but their music draws a wide range of influences from classic rock, grunge, psychedelia, indie and blues; all wrapped up in a post-punk attitude and leopard print coat. We met up with lead singer Harry Koisser and drummer Dom Boyce before their headline show at Anson Rooms, Bristol. At one point, a (very) excited fan spots us and comes over for a photo and a chat. This is a long way from the gigs they played to an empty Mothers’ Ruin a few years ago. They’ve played in Bristol more than anywhere else, Dom tells us. Including the Academy, The Louisiana, Thekla... “We’ve www.peaceforever.co.uk
played Mothers’ Ruin god knows how many times - we played there to literally no one.” Clearly Mothers’ Ruin were on to something, because Peace are now signed to major label Columbia Records. Peace signed to Columbia after Chrissie Hynde was tipped to attended a gig they were playing opposite her house in London. Her husband, an A&R Scout for Columbia, started coming to see their shows after that and eventually signed the band to the label. Harry tells us about a time he came up to see them play at Dom’s house in Birmingham, “We had a Christmas party that we put up on facebook, open invite, and Ollie from Columbia came up thinking it was going to be a real show. But it was just us playing in Dom’s lounge. He said that that’s when he realised we were the real thing.” “It was a bit of an ugly duckling story I think. We weren’t like any other band that was signed to Columbia at the time. In the way that we dressed, or hygiene... we were the most un-major label thing. But they took a risk on us which is really cool and now we’re about to make a second record.” Despite all band members hailing from a small town in Worcester, Harry and Dom claim to have disliked each other before they met. “You know small town syndrome?” explains Interview by Rachel Morris
Dom points to the merchandise stand behind him and says, “look at all that!” We asked what their craziest fan experience has been and Harry tells us about coming out of gig in Liverpool recently to find the streets lined with people, and getting pinned up against their bus. “It was all a bit One Direction! They had to get security in to get people back from the bus. It was really weird! I just wanted to talk and have pictures with people. I didn’t want them to get pushed away. They had to close the road because of all the people.” There’s no doubt that Peace have risen so quickly on the power of their live shows. Their performance is so natural that they are impossible to watch passively. Throughout their entire Anson Rooms gig, the audience were utterly involved; jumping, arms up, in beat with the guitar riffs, and the whole crowd swaying together to ‘California Sun’. “I think people don’t really get it until they see us live. The response to the tour has been, ‘I get it now’. Our live shows
Harry, “Where everyone knows everyone, even if you haven’t met them?” Dom: “You’re either best friends, someone’s girlfriend or worst enemies.” Harry: “I couldn’t be your best friend because we’d never met, you couldn’t be my girlfriend ‘cause we’d never met. So by that we were enemies.” But after meeting in college, Dom and Harry “started jamming together and trying to be The Police. We wanted to be like a more worldly, psychedelic version of The Police”. Along with Doug (guitar) and Harry’s brother Tom (bass), they formed an “experimental” college band, playing around with “long songs that dragged on for ages and improvisation.” “Then when we all had jobs and real life was beginning, we started Peace. We wanted to be in a band and we were getting to a point where we all had other commitments, so we were like f**k it! Let’s do it.” If there has ever been a point where the band realised that they were really making it, it’s been this tour, “We’ve got a bit of production and a merch stall, and a bus!”
aren’t about the one or two songs that people know, because people seem to know all of our songs. Our live shows are more a representation of us and where we are now. Everything kind of makes sense when we play it live. When I listen to the record it’s not the same. When we play live, that’s what it’s all about.”

Independent shopping in Bristol: Meet the owners... Thanks to schemes like the Bristol Pound and ‘Bristol Independents’, Bristol is a city that breeds a culture of independents -particularly when it comes to clothing - and so Bristol is home to some of the best independent clothing stores in the country. We talk to the owners of Shop Dutty about their unique store on Gloucester Road...
Dutty Louisa is the founder of Dutty Girl, a female DJ/ MC collective who host regular club nights and parties in Bristol, as well as playing various festivals and supporting Annie Mac “a few times”. With a strong passion for customising vintage clothing thrown into the mix, Shop Dutty was born out of Louisa’s love of both fashion and music. Co-owner and fashion designer Joh is heavily inspired by vintage materials and patterns, creating a unique collection of up-cycled street wear and one-off designs. It’s definitely fair to say that Shop Dutty is a lifestyle brand, stocking club night tickets, spray paints and artwork alongside original street wear, customised and vintage clothing, and accessories. You can even get your nails done in store with Boom Nails nail art. How did Shop Dutty get started? Louisa: It all started 10 years ago when I started a club night. I had a vision to have a female-led club night that would be a platform for women to come together in hip-hop and to promote female hip-hop acts. Then I decided I could have a shop, too, that was related to the Dutty brand. I set up Shop Dutty with a small unit in St Nick’s Market selling vintage clothing and I started writing ‘Dutty’ on things and getting hoodies and stuff printed up with the Dutty Girl logo on it. Joh got involved as one of the designers that came on board when I had the shop in St Nick’s Market. We’d known each shopdutty.com // 0117 9249990 / 116 Cheltenham Road, Bristol
other for a few years and she had just started her own brand (‘Butchi & Gosmos’). She began selling her stuff in my shop and doing a couple of days a week in there. Eventually I convinced her that we should get a bigger shop - and so 5 years ago we found this shop in Stokes Croft and haven’t looked back! Who is your average customer? Joh: Our brand is probably quite unusual compared to a lot of shops because our spectrum is quite wide. Literally from 12 years old up to mid-forties, sometimes even older! You get those cooler, fashionista, 65 year old ladies coming in. But our ideal target we’d probably set between 15-30. Louisa: Yeah, it’s young people who are generally into music, they’re generally into the clubbing scene... That’s why we’ve put our ‘Dutty Lifestyle’ logo on our new t-shirt, because it is a lifestyle brand. Joh: It’s about music, art, creativity, fashion love and vintage love; it embodies all of that. How do your club nights tie into Shop Dutty? Louisa: For me, music and fashion are one. Joh: Imagine taking what you most like to do in your life, and putting them together! Can you tell us a bit more about your own labels? Joh: My label Butchi & Gosmos was originally named after my two cats! I’ve always, always sewn since my mum taught me to use a machine when I was about 10. I’ve made my own clothes since then and used to make things for other people at school, and then throughout college and uni I started taking orders. Interview by Rachel Morris
Joh and Louisa
On my business card it says ‘festival regalia’ - I like that term! I use a lot of vintage materials and I try and change the perception of ‘re-cycled fashion’ a little bit with what I do, and so do a lot of the designers we stock here. Something doesn’t have to be hippy rags to be re-cycled and have those good ethics behind it. It can be modern, stylish street wear. Louisa: Re-cycling vintage helps us to create complete oneoffs as well. We look at the catwalk and see what is going on in the real world and try and see what fashions are ahead, and then try and make them fast fashion, but in a vintageinspired way or using vintage materials. Joh: I’m hugely inspired by patterns on fabrics. That’s my main source of inspiration. I see a pattern and I get all these ideas of things I want to make just from seeing one pattern. Louisa: For me, I’m inspired by the original item. If I see a vintage dress or skirt I think, “what could this be?” What can I do to make it more modern? Or what do I think would make it better. Because often the shapes or the cuts of the past are cool and they’re nice, but they don’t feel modern and they don’t suit the modern figure or way of dressing. So it’s just about upgrading. It could be just a small change, but it makes all the difference. Joh: Bringing the hem up, or cutting the sleeves up, lowering the collar, or even taking the bottom half of something and adding it to a brand new sweatshirt. Louisa: My brands are ‘Diss Miss Designs’, which is my personal one-offs and customised vintage, and ‘Dutty Girl’ which is the music merchandise.
What do you think is unique about Shop Dutty compared to other independent shops? Joh: We see ourselves as a platform for up-and-coming designers. Somewhere people feel they can go to for advice, or somewhere that can help them sell their wares and give them feedback. And hopefully somewhere where we can help them push their brands and take it to the next level. For instance, Jennifer Hope came to us for work experience in her second year of uni and by the time she had finished her third year she was stocked in Topshop. So we can help people move along pretty quickly! Louisa: And the music lifestyle stuff as well, that’s a big part of our USP. We are a music outfit as well as a shop. We sell club night tickets and support the clubs around the city. Joh: Also changing the way that re-cycled fashion is perceived. It’s cool street wear as well. Louisa: When I was starting the first shop, I was massively inspired by other Bristol small independent shops, and I think the fact that we’re a female force and that we’re doing it for women is very important.
We definitely have the men’s stuff in there but we can’t help but focus on the girl’s stuff because we want to give the girls something like the guys have, they have Donuts, etc. but this is something for the girls, in a street wear way, or a hip-hop way. Joh: Another thing that’s quite important to us is that it’s not an intimidating environment for girls to come in and buy paint, for instance, and on the whole. We’ve got a nice, friendly little shop. Louisa: That was one of the first reasons we decided we wanted to sell paint. We hoped it would mean girls would feel more able to do that. We didn’t realise the whole of Bristol would come in in and buy their paint! But if it means that we helped even just a few girls feel that something like graffiti isn’t just for men, then we’ve been successful. What’s are your plans for the future of Shop Dutty? Joh: We’ve just opened our new shop in London which is based in Kensal Rise. We’re stocking local independent designers, as well as obviously the shop brand, our own labels and vintage. Louisa: We’ve taken a few of the best Bristol-based designers with us to London to showcase them there. But also, while we’re in London we want to represent up-and- coming London designers that fit in with our style and that we feel we want to push. If we opened a shop in Leeds or Brighton it would be the same thing. Joh: But we’re keeping it Dutty all the way -you’d recognise the shop a mile off! We’ve been really well received in the area and people are really stoked that we’re there. It’s become a bit of a destination shop with people traveling across the city to visit the shop.
