Jools Holland

Jools Holland and His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, plus special guest Mel C at Colston Hall Jools Holland is without doubt one of the world’s most respected musicians. The former Squeeze member’s musical career has spanned nearly four decades, over which time he has received numerous prestigious awards and titles, including an OBE. Jools’ career as a television presenter has run parallel to his musical career and his iconic ‘Later...with Jools Holland’ is now in its 43rd series. Jools formed The Jools Holland Big Band in 1987, comprising himself and Gilson Lavis. This has gradually metamorphosed into the current 20-piece Jools Holland and His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, which consists of Jools Holland // Colston Hall // 8th Nov

pianist, organist, drummer, three female vocals, guitar, bass guitar, two tenor saxophones, two alto saxophones, baritone saxophone, three trumpets, and four trombones. This November, Jools Holland will bring his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra to Bristol, featuring special guest, pop icon and former Spice Girl Melanie C for a spectacular show at Colston Hall. Jools can expect a welcome return to Bristol after his involvement in this summer’s Gromit Unleashed Trail, which helped raise a whopping £2.3 million to support sick children and their families at Bristol Children’s Hospital. Photography: Mary McCartney

His upcoming show at Colston Hall is one not to be missed. Along with long time drummer Gilson Lavis, vocalists Ruby Turner, Louise Marshall and special guest Melanie C, acclaimed trombonist Rico Rodriguez, and the rest of the Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, Jools Holland will perform tracks spanning his entire solo career, as well as songs taken from his latest album The Golden Age Of Song. The Golden Age Of Song went Gold within six weeks of release and features superb collaborations with some of the world’s most acclaimed musical artists, including Florence Welch, Tom Jones, Amy Winehouse and Cee-Lo Green.

Jools designed the Bumble Boogie Gromit (pictured) for the trail, and in true exuberant form, as an extra special gesture Jools recorded a piece of music based on the Flight of the Bumble Bee with his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra to be played by his musical Gromit.

The show coincides with the Bristol International Blues and Jazz Festival launch, so Colston Hall will be in full swing with free performances in the foyer from Get the Blessing and Pee Wee Ellis. DJ Double Agent 7 will also be playing in the stalls bar after the show and Colston Hall will be staying open late. Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra will play Colston Hall on Friday 8th November. More info: www.colstonhall.org

Win tickets to see Madeleine Peyroux in concert Jazz singer and songwriter Madeleine Peyroux brings her tour to Colston Hall, performing tracks from her new album The Blue Room. Peyroux has been called an ‘interpreter’ through her intensely distinctive renditions of old classics and modern tunes by the likes of Leonard Cohen and The Beatles. “The only thing that matters is the song,” says singer-songwriter

Madeleine Peyroux. That conviction along with a ‘one of a kind’ voice, has carried the Jazz artist from busking on the streets of Paris, all the way to mainstream recognition. Peyroux’s new album, The Blue Room, sees the genre-blending singer reworking some landmark musical gems, in a repeat collaboration with longtime Peyroux producer Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Walter Becker, Tracy Chapman, Herbie Hancock).

The result is a sophisticated album that seamlessly fuses musical styles together to create an entirely new sound.

Interview: The Naked and Famous

The Naked and Famous’ David Beadle talks to us about their new album In Rolling Waves Five-piece New Zealand alternative rock band, The Naked and Famous have had a great year. They finish up their world tour next month with a sold out show in London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire, and they’ve just announced an arena tour with Imagine Dragons next year. If you’re not already familiar with the band, there’s no doubt you will have heard their music before. Their track ‘Punching in a Dream’ was the opening theme to Made In Chelsea’s season 1, on the FIFA 12 soundtrack, and featured on the viral YouTube documentary Kony 2012. And their No.1 single (NZ) ‘Young Blood’ has blown up in the UK with recorded covers from Jessie J and Birdy. The Naked and Famous // O2 Academy // 29th Nov

Their new album In Rolling Waves has received praise from NME and the lead single was named “hottest record in the world right now” on BBC Radio 1. Bassist David Beadle talks to us ahead of their Bristol show this month. Congratulations on your new album In Rolling Waves - it sounds great! Would you say that your sound has changed at all since your first album? Yeah, I mean we released Passive Me, Aggressive You in the UK beginning of 2011, but we’ve been writing it for a while before that, so a change in sounds is just more of a natural progression of us as people and musicians. So I guess the sound has changed, but it’s more of an evolution or growing in maturity maybe . Interview by Rachel Morris

NME called ‘Hearts Like Ours’ a “killer single” and Zane Lowe chose it as his “Hottest Record in the World Today” on BBC Radio 1. Do you have a favourite track on the new album? It was the same with the last album, I could never really make up my mind! One week it would be one track, and the next week another one. And often that comes from playing the songs live; sometimes it will be the way you perform it that will make you fall in love with a track, or maybe the audience’s response will make you like a track a little bit more. So in that regard, ‘What We Want’ gets a really great reception live, and lyrically it’s just so wonderful to listen to so that’s been my favourite track for a while now. But on the US tour as well, the song ‘To Move With Purpose’ has been another one. The audience reaction we get out of that is really incredible. Where does the band name come from? We stole it! You know the artist Tricky? There’s a song called Tricky Kid from the album Pre-Millennium Tension and end of that track he says, “everybody wants to be naked and famous, everybody wants to be someone like me”. And so we took that with a sense of irony and I know that’s the way he was doing it too. And so it sort of summed up a lot of what we didn’t like or weren’t interested in within not just music, but art and culture and general. We weren’t interested in being either naked or famous -and that still stands to this day! In the past you’ve been compared a lot to MGMT. Would you say that’s fair comparison? Yeah, I think it is to a degree. It’s a very surface level comparison. MGMT’s sound, that’s their sound across an entire album. I know with Passive Me, Aggressive You that comparison comes at a surface level through tracks like ‘Young Blood’ and ‘Punching In a Dream’, and I guess with In Rolling Waves it comes from ‘Hearts Like Ours’ or something like ‘I killed Jane’. But we’re fans of a lot of different genres and I think you can hear that across the album.

Who or what have been the major influences on your music over the years? It’s a massive mix. We’re all big music fans and we’re all big fans of different music as well. Something we all have in common is 90s alternative rock music. We’re all big trip-hop fans, we’re all Nine Inch Nails fans. But more recently we’ve been listening to a lot of Frightened Rabbit, Modeselektor... the new Chvrches record is wonderful. And even folkier stuff like Father John Misty and things like that. So the influences are very, very vast. You’re one of the biggest bands to come out of New Zealand in recent years (winning a tonne of awards on the way), what prompted the move to LA? We didn’t want to be a band to go back home, we wanted to stay away and continue working and continue pursuing what we had learnt. And also logistics and economics too. To get back to New Zealand is 24 hours flying to from London, so it made sense to be somewhere more central. Los Angeles is somewhere that we had spent a lot of time, and within America Los Angeles just seems kind of similar to New Zealand - you have to drive everywhere! It’s pretty expansive and sprawling. And the people are really nice too. In Rolling Waves was mixed in London. Any hopes of you guys moving to the UK? In Rolling Waves was mixed by Alan Moulder at his studio in London, Assault and Battery. Alan Moulder had a lot to do with Nine Inch Nails and a lot of the bands we grew up falling in love with. In terms of living there - I’m not sure. None of us even realised we were going to being staying in Los Angeles until the end of our last tour. Maybe if our next tour finishes in the UK we’ll end up in London! Don’t miss The Naked and Famous playing at O2 Academy Bristol this November.

Independent shopping in Bristol: Meet the owners... Thanks to schemes like the Bristol Pound and ‘Bristol Independents’, Bristol is a city that breeds a culture of independents -particularly when it comes to clothing - and so Bristol is home to some of the best independent clothing stores in the country. We met up with the owner of Portabella to get some insight into why independent shops are so intrinsic to Bristol life

Portabella Independent women’s fashion boutique Portabella is run byis run by Bristol-born Delphine, who has over 10 years experience as a buyer and shop owner in the city. Situated in up-market Clifton Village, the shop is welcomingly small with just four clothing rails and a varied selection of jewellery, shoes and bags. Several times while we are talking, customers come into the shop and Delphine helps them to find whatever they’re after, whether it’s suggesting the right colour top or choosing matching accessories. She has a manner that is not overwhelming and the customers seem to leave happy each time. Delphine tells us that she has in the past set up and ran much bigger stores in Bristol, but she much prefers the personal experience she can offer at Portabella.

How did Portabella come to be? I used to have a much larger shop in Bristol, but I felt like I wanted to reengage with fashion by selling to a much smaller client base in a smaller shop. So I started a new brand in a new shop called Portabella. Can you describe Portabella in three words? Inexpensive, stylish, everyday. How would you describe your own sense of style? Probably the same three words! I have created a shop that I feel does represent me, and Alex that works here, in some way. We aren’t selling expensive designer goods like the other stores in Clifton, because that’s not what we’re wearing -it’s more highstreet. And because I’m older, I’m buying with an older customer in mind. I think about how I would want to receive the service from my shop. I want things that are going to last. I want

things that are going to go through the wash and not come out and look like something else. I think that’s what gives us the edge over other shops that maybe sell a cheaper priced goods than designer shops.

What do you think are the benefits of independent shopping in Bristol? I think you can get to know a shop keeper, there’s a traditional element to it which is what people come to Clifton for particularly. People who are really settled in a city where they live want to get to know their community. And anyone shopping in independent shops gets a much more personal and community based experience that you just don’t get in a watered-down chain store.

What’s next for Portabella? It’s very early days, but I’m currently working with two others to create our own ethical clothing line. If things go to plan, hopefully we’ll have the designs on the rails in Portabella for next Spring/ Summer! I’ve got 10 years of experience now as a buyer and running my own business, that this just feels like a natural progression. You can find Portabella on Princess Victoria Street in Clifton Village. Pop in and say hello to Delphine! @PortabellaShop // 0117 924 1247 // 5 Princess Victoria Steet, Clifton
