Interview: Paloma Faith

Paloma Faith and the Guy Barker Orchestra bring ‘Symphonic Grace’ to the Colston Hall Since storming onto the scene with the release of her debut single Stone Cold Sober in 2009, Paloma Faith has remained irmly at the forefront of the UK Jazz scene. Her distinctive retro sound draws obvious influences from classic jazz and soul, and is wrought with technical skill, a testament to her degree in contemporary dance and Masters in Time Based Arts Central St Martin’s. This, combined with an innate talent and clear passion for what she does is what makes Paloma Faith a truly standout artist. Paloma has also enjoyed success as an actress, as well as earning herself a reputation as a reputation as a fashion icon, known for her eccentric style and retro glamour. A front row regular at last month’s London Fashion Week, she caused a

stir at the Burberry Prorsum show wearing a quirky see-through skirt with cute heart print pants on show. However, it’s Paloma’s music that has earned her the most attention - and rightly so. She writes veraciously and has worked with some of the industry’s biggest names including legendary producer Nellee Hooper (Bjork, No Doubt, Massive Attack, Madonna). Her performances are consistently breathtaking, her pitch as perfect on the stage as in the recording studio. “She sings the bejesus out of these big, open-hearted tunes” – Mojo The singer has received numerous awards and nominations, including Best British Female and Best British Album. She has also performed with the likes of Chaka Kahn and Prince,

Interview by Jenny Entwistle

who handpicked Faith to perform with him at NPG Music and Arts Festival in Copenhagen. The accolade is well-deserved, “I’ve worked bloody hard for it!” says the fiery 26-year-old; who turned down a position as a backing singer for Amy Winehouse to pursue writing and performing her own material. Paloma’s current tour ‘Symphonic Grace’ sees her team up with the 42-piece Guy Barker Orchestra to perform hits from her Brit-nominated album, Fall to Grace. This won’t be the first time Paloma and Guy Barker Orchestra have performed together, with a critically acclaimed collaboration in 2010 wowing crowds at the Cheltenham Festival, and again in 2012 with a performance at London Barbican. In a rare interview, the charismatic star discusses her latest album and why she prefers performing live: Talking about your album ‘Fall To Grace’ you’ve stated that you’ve taken a more cinematic approach with the album, with it being the ‘soundtrack to your life’. Was this a conscious decision to combine your music with your love of acting? It was more that I wanted to combine it with my love of film as a viewer. I watch a lot of films all the time so I wanted to somehow cultivate the atmosphere of films into this whole album and everything we put out. You’ve previously said that you write songs so that you can perform them live (as opposed to recording them in a studio), do you prefer performing the chilled out songs or the more upbeat numbers?

I think both, a mix of both. Like light, you need light and shade; gigs are full of light and shade as well. Do you have any favourite tracks from the album? What track are you most looking forward to fans hearing you perform? I love all of them, but I think some stand out ones are probably ‘The Next Thing’, ’30 Minute Love Affair’ and ‘Blood Sweat and Tears’ they’re kind of more dancey ones, which make me excited to have a dance! I’m really looking forward to the emotional side of things with ‘Just Be’, and ‘Streets Of Glory’ I’m really excited about too. ‘Just Be’ is a very stripped back ballad with piano and then ‘Streets of Glory’ is the opposite, it’s got bells and whistles and everything all in one. You’ve been hailed in the press as somewhat of a fashion icon - who would you say were your biggest influences or inspirations, and are there any new designers we should look out for? Biggest inspiration is probably Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich... Coco Chanel – I love the way she dressed – Bjork and Grace Jones. Designers I love Dolce and Gabbana, I keep wearing them, Alexander McQueen I think is incredible, I love all the high-end stuff like Jean Paul Gaultier. New designers I think Piers Atkinson and Victoria Grant are amazing.

within the exhibition happened and is real. He constructs a set using a tank, water, glass plates, mirrors and coloured and UV lights. Flowers are submerged in the tank as the core of each piece then inks, dyes and paints are introduced to imbue the scene with a sense of movement and life. It is this decisive moment which Emerson captures within his photography. Catch an artist talk on 16th October to hear from Charles in his own words

Bristol Talent: DJ Dan (founder of Propaganda) The UK’s biggest indie night Propaganda re-launched at The Fleece last month, with a DJ set from Jimmy Eat World’s Jim Adkins. Propaganda runs weekly in 22 cities across the UK, as well as events in Australia, Brazil and Ibiza. But behind the phenomenal success of Propaganda are more humble beginnings, starting out 10 years ago as a small club night put together by a Bristol University student on his studentloan budget of £300. Now a world-class DJ who has DJ’d for the likes of Oasis, as well as headlining sets at Glastonbury and Reading and Leeds festival, Propaganda founder DJ Dan says he sometimes has to pinch himself to make sure he’s not dreaming. We talked to DJ Dan about creating the biggest indie club night in the UK, DJing for Noel Gallagher and re-launching at the Fleece.

What inspired you to create the Propaganda night? I created the Propaganda night when I was a student a Bristol University, I had previously been in bands and managed my band and I had never considered being a DJ, but during my freshers week there was someone hiring for DJs, I enquired and they took me on board and taught me the ropes. I launched Propaganda in my second year of uni using my student loan, and I did it on a budget of about £300. I never expected it to become as big as it is. Is there anything about Bristol as a city that you think facilitated a night like this to really take off? Yeah, I think Bristol’s always had a really strong nightlife scene and good clubbing scene, but it didn’t really have that many indie clubs -and it still doesn’t really. At the time I started Propaganda the dance scene was really strong and really big. Propaganda offered something for indie fans. I think certainly Bristol as a city really embraced Propaganda. And if they hadn’t, I wouldn’t have been able to launch it in other cities and it wouldn’t have become what it is now. How do you think Propaganda fits in with the Bristol music scene today? We keep it really current and over time we have changed the music policy and evolved as the music scene has evolved, and although we are an indie night, we play other genres of music as well and I think that’s why propaganda has been so successful and why it works in Bristol. Propaganda has just moved to Saturdays at The Fleece. What else is in store for the future of Propaganda Bristol? It’s a big change for us because we used to always be mid-week, but we really wanted to move to a Saturday night and the Fleece is a great venue for it just because it has such a vibrant and strong live music scene, propaganda fits it really well. And over the last few years we’ve started to do more and more live band tours within Propaganda in other cities, but we haven’t been able to do that in Bristol because we’ve never had a venue that could incorporate that. So now we’re in the Fleece we can put on live bands and Propaganda should be great.

idolized from such a young age dancing to your music -it’s bizarre! DJing at Glastonbury to 6,000 people was amazing, and this summer I was DJing at Reading and Leeds festival. We had a tent of 10,000 people and we were the last act on a Sunday night so it was amazing to close the festival. What do you think it is that has made you so successful as a DJ? I think when I DJ I really like to show people I’m having a good time. So when I’m playing I jump around and climb on the decks and I really enjoy that I music I play -I like to show that. When you see a band live, it’s so much better when the band is jumping around and really into it, they’re not just static playing their songs. I’ve tried to take that same concept and put it into DJing and I think it makes me a bit unique as a DJ, because I’m not just standing there boringly playing tracks, I’m jumping around and I’m really passionate about the music I play and I think that comes across. The Fleece is quite a legendary venue in Bristol - what does that mean to you? Yeah, it’s got such history behind it. Literally almost every big band has played the Fleece, everyone from Oasis, Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Editors... So many big bands have played there and they still get really good gigs. As a DJ you’ve played with some pretty big names yourself. What do you think has been the biggest moment of your DJ career? DJing for Oasis has been one of the real highlights for me. Oasis have been my favourite band since I was 13/14. I was asked to DJ for them a few years ago when they did their Milton Keynes show, and it was meant to just be a one-off but they enjoyed my show so much I got booked as their official aftershow DJ. I went on their final stadium tour! I DJ’d for them for a number of years and it’s always been a dream come true -I have to pinch myself for the fact that I’ve ended up becoming my favourite band’s after show DJ - it’s been just surreal. Although Oasis obviously have split up, I’ve continued DJing for Noel Gallagher and last year I was playing for his end of world tour after party and he was on the dance floor and was coming up to me and asking for requests the whole time. It’s just so strange to see this person that you’ve absolutely

Me and the other DJs that play Propaganda really enjoy the indie scene and that’s why it’s been such a success. Propaganda takes place at The Fleece every Saturday. Doors 11pm – 4am. Admission £5 (£4 for students before midnight). www.thepropaganda.com

Independent shopping in Bristol: Meet the owners... Thanks to schemes like the Bristol Pound and ‘Bristol Independents’, Bristol is a city that breeds a culture of independents -particularly when it comes to clothing - and so Bristol is home to some of the best independent clothing stores in the country. We met up with a couple of them to get some insight into why independent shops are so intrinsic to Bristol life...

Donuts Jamie and Tom are friends and business partners, who set up Donuts 6 years ago with an idea to bring the brands that they liked, but weren’t available in Bristol, to the city. That, and to “throw parties”.... How did you two come together and decide to set up Donuts the Store? Jamie: We opened in 2007, prior to that Tom and I had both worked in clothing stores that were 3 doors apart, and I think perhaps slightly arrogantly, we both thought we could do a better job than our bosses! I was always hunting out bits and bobs on ebay, brands that you couldn’t get in anywhere Bristol, so the idea was to start a store and bring those brands to Bristol that you couldn’t get anywhere else, but we felt there was a market for. Is that still the case now, do you still stock exclusive brands. Tom: Yeah, everything we stock here is exclusive to us, pretty much, in the city. We generally strive to try and bring stuff to Bristol that’s not already here. Which is what gives people a reason to visit the store.

Jamie: And I guess in the last few years there are more stores doing something similar, so we generally feel there’s not much point in our brands overlapping so we try to keep to things that are actually unique to us -that’s our selling point really. Who is your brand aimed at? Jamie: We run music events as well as the store and we have quite close ties to mainly dance music in Bristol, so our customers are generally a mix of say, students and we do get a lot of DJs and musicians coming in. Tom: I think as we’ve gotten older our tastes have matured a little bit as well. And that’s possibly reflected in the people we get coming in here and interested in our brands and the clothes that we stock in here. For example, things like Percival and Woodward and Norse Project which are probably aimed at a slightly older market. Jamie: We do T-shirts that go from £25 up to a couple of the Pam ones that we’ve just had arrive that are going to be around £95. Tom: We try to offer a broad spectrum of stuff that’s not exclusively really expensive and try and provide, hopefully, something for everyone.

We’re not into any big brand that comes along and gives us a load of stock to put in our store. We’re quite selective with what we want to present and how stuff sits together and it’s definitely a reflection of what we’re into as individuals. Jamie: It doesn’t necessarily have to be a big brand name or even a known name for us to be interested in stocking it -it just has to be something that we think is cool. Tom: There’s a lot of independent brand that we support. We’re an independent store -we like to support independence within fashion and design and retail -that’s a fairly big element of what we do. What are the benefits of independent shopping over big retail chains? Tom: I think customers get something that’s a lot more unique in their shopping experience. Coming to a smaller store like us, it’s only ever going to be me or Jamie sitting here and we enjoy building up relationships and we have a lot of friends and repeat customers.

Jamie: It’s definitely a more personal experience. And some of the brands here are stocked in maybe only two stores in the whole country. You see a t-shirt in here and it’s entirely possible that it might be one 10 ever made. You’re not going to bump into someone wearing the same thing. Have you got any plans to design your own range? Jamie: We’re looking to take that plunge in the next six months. We’ve done a few collaborative t-shirts and stuff like that. We’re doing a capsule collection of hats and t-shirts with Colourway very shortly. And we’re looking to produce some stuff actually branded as Donuts soon. We tend to do a t-shirt for our birthday every year and they always sell really well. Donuts can be found on Perry Road, Park Row. Don’t miss their 6th Birthday Party this October! Pop into the store for details or turn to our City Highlights on page 8. @donutsthestore // 01179 292 625 // www.donutsthestore.co.uk
