mario@broadripplegazette.com Elizabeth Brown’s quest for antiques and artwork are a rare find at Reclamation. She owns the north side shop at 5335 North Winthrop Avenue featuring vintage items. “My parents took me to antique stores a lot when I was little. I studied interior design at Ball State University and the history of architecture that led me to antiques. I worked for Midland, an antique mall east of downtown Indianapolis. [Reclamation] is about a quarter to a third of the size of that place,” she explained. Her recent move south of the Broad Ripple area has breathed new life into an existing property. “I think this is a really neat, up and coming, artsy area. This is something that this neighborhood didn’t have and it’s a really cool, old building that was a factory in the 1930s,” Ms. Brown noted. “I opened Reclamation at 49th Street and College Avenue in April of 2011. [The 49th Street store had] about 1,000 square feet there on consignment. I started collecting vendors there. We have 54 dealers in this location that opened in October. There are vendors upstairs and downstairs. I told my husband that I was collecting people instead of furniture. There are a lot of different styles and local artists represented here. Generally, my rule is that everything is at least 25 years or older here or hand-made because much of it is artwork. There are a lot of vintage artwork and antiques here. I think people are surprised when they come in from outside because this isn’t what they would expect to see,” Ms. Brown mentioned. The vendors she met at her College Avenue location provide an eclectic range of antiques and artwork among 5,000 square feet on two floors in their new home. Due to the number of Ms. Brown’s vendors, they couldn’t all be listed, but their individual displays are well worth seeing. There will also be a 5335 Winthrop Ave vintage clothing boutique opening in [OO24 on map] Reclamation’s lower level sometime (317) 602-8672 in early fall. “We have a lady downstairs that reclamationindy.com makes scarves and vests out of doilies and old lace. She just moved in last week (early August) and I think she’s going to be really popular. There are a lot of repurposed items. As far as antiques, we have some 1920s theatre lights. The guy that I got them from had them in a barn for 40 years. He believes they originated from a downtown Indianapolis theatre,” she surmised. One vendor carves various objects from wood while another restores Schwinn
bicycles. A refurbished boy’s bike that is not for sale provides an example of his work to customers. At the time this article was written, there was a pink girl’s bike available. “We have 54 people that do different things, like pickers that may go to estate sales or garage sales. A lot of them go out of state and some of them are fairly well known. People call them and ask them to look through their barns or houses. I love it when I get invited to someone’s place to search through their items,” she said. A black rotary dial phone at Reclamation was recently used until a newer model replaced it, but another model is currently for sale in the shop’s lower level. Ms. Brown’s sleuthing for antiques is one of her many skills. “I also do wood restoration and upholstery as a hobby. When I started buying antiques, I figured that I should learn how to fix them. I took sewing and clothing construction classes at Ball State and transferred these skills to upholstery,” she added. Examples of

I know where these things originated. Its really fun to share the antique’s historical information with the customer.” Ms. Brown mentioned certain materials that are currently in demand: “Barn wood is very popular right now as many people are making items out of it. A lot of people are repurposing old furniture. One of our vendors takes apart old furniture and uses it to build new furniture.” Reclamation’s hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Music and food – two of my favorite things rolled up into one church parking lot. The food is served from 4:00 – 10:00 and the offerings include fare from Sam’s Gyros, Mama Carolla’s, Pat Flynn’s, Byrne’s Grilled Pizza, Knights of Columbus Ribs, and hot dogs, burgers, and brats. The beer (and wine) garden is open from 4:00 – 11:00, and the games for the kiddos will last from 4:00 – 8:00. And like every good Catholic Church festival, Mass will be celebrated at 5:30. A day of music is planned in honor of Emily Whitten, who recently lost both of her parents. There is a terrific lineup of music – Miracle Mike Rodman & Co., Allen Stratyner, Doc and the Whiskey River Band, and the ever-delightful Andra Faye and the Rays. You are welcome to bring lawn chairs and coolers (leave the glass at home, please). Hohlt Park is in the heart of Rocky Ripple. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. In your next job interview, telling a prospective employer a STAR story can highlight your job skills beyond your resume. Networking Coach Dale Hinshaw is a local expert in helping people tell STAR stories. He is a member of the Society of Human Resource Professionals. S is for a situation or circumstance that you encountered in your past work or personal life. It could be a problem requiring a unique solution that you develop on your own or with co-workers. T is for the task that you undertake to create steps to solve the problem. A is for your action or implementation of those steps or plan. R is for the result or final outcome of your action that leads to a solution. Each business faces daily challenges and they need individuals with innovative ideas to resolve them. You can demonstrate your problem-solving skills by telling a STAR story in about two to three minutes. The story that you tell with an enthusiastic and upbeat tone can emphasize your individual strengths and attributes. An example of my own personal STAR story is that I had not written for publication for a few years and wanted to start again. The task involved was seeking out a newspaper (in this case, the Broad Ripple Gazette) that might consider me as a contributing writer. The action undertaken was sending an e-mail inquiry to publisher Alan Hague. When we later met, he asked me to write two initial articles - a charity basketball tournament sponsored by Broad Ripple H.S. and Purdue University alumni Rosevelt Colvin and a biography on barber Paul Taylor. That was five years ago as the results were positive. The Gazette continues to provide local community news not found elsewhere as I've met a diverse group of incredibly talented business owners and individuals in and around Broad Ripple. Although this is a basic example, think of past problems you or your company have faced and how you helped resolve them. Everybody should have at least a few samples, either in their working or personal lives. They can be inspiring narratives that increase the potential employer’s interest in hiring you to utilize these same skills. By relating a memorable STAR story to a future employer, they may remember you long after the interview, especially when making a hiring decision. Your ability to explain your accomplishments in an articulate, enthusiastic manner in a job interview could lead to your next career and that is something worth talking about!

Random Ripplings In preparation for the annual Rocky Ripple Festival (September 29), Julie Bleakley, Ann Wickham, and Dhyana Raynor recently assembled bat houses. The bat houses will be decorated by local artists for the festival's silent auction fund raiser. Last year the bat house project brought in $670 for the Rocky Ripple Parks Endowment Fund.

Bishop Chatard Historic Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
Saturday, August 17th, Bishop Chatard will host a ribbon cutting ceremony in the stadium of its new $2.5 million athletic complex. This ceremony will commemorate the success of the $4.5 million Golden Opportunities Capital Campaign. 5885 Crittenden Ave [JJ30 on map] Events will begin at 6:45 p.m., in between the JV and Varsity girls soccer match. To honor this occasion, a 100-yard commemorative ribbon will be stretched the length of the field and cut by the leaders of the Capital Campaign. The festivities will also include a blessing from Fr. Paul Shikany, words of gratitude from BCHS President Bill Sahm, and a special surprise to fire up the Trojan fans. The success of the Capital Campaign is due to the overwhelming support of current families, alumni and community leaders. The campaign, the largest in school history, was able to blow past its goal and brought in over $5 million in donations. The state-of-the-art athletic facility is just one component of the campaign. The campaign has four other components (Teacher Compensation Endowment, The Academic Environment, Tuition Assistance Endowment, and the Campus Expansion Reserve). Each of these improvements will allow BCHS to provide its students with the latest technology and the best possible learning environment.

The background of The Gazette: Army Corps of Engineers Indy levee project public hearing is Aug. 23
Members of the public in the Indianapolis North levee and floodwall project area are invited to attend a public hearing and open house Aug. 23 at the Meridian Street United Methodist Church, 5500 North Meridian Street. The open house is 5-6:45 p.m. The Army Corps of Engineers public hearing begins at 7 p.m. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District Commander Col. Luke Leonard will chair the meeting. The purpose of the hearing is to accept oral and written public comments in response to the draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Study (DSEIS) which will be considered when the final report is prepared. The DEIS and more information are available at http://bit.ly/indynorth The open house session will allow for informal discussions with Corps’ representatives on the content of the DSEIS. The Corps will provide displays to illustrate alternative actions to complete the project along with the proposed action, the Westfield Blvd. alternative. The public hearing is a forum for oral comments on the DSEIS. A registration table will open at 5 p.m. where attendees can obtain handouts, provide mailing information for receipt of project updates, and sign-up to speak during the public hearing session. All oral comments will be made in an organized format with comments limited to three minutes. Each comment will be recorded. Comments made at the hearing will be included in the project documentation and will be considered in the preparation of a Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (FSEIS). As required by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the DSEIS evaluates specific alternatives or proposed actions for realigning a downstream section of a proposed floodwall, additional tree removal at previously constructed sections of the project and changes to mitigation of the project’s environmental impacts. The Corps has completed construction of two sections of floodwall, within the Warfleigh and Broad Ripple neighborhoods; however, those neighborhoods will not receive full flood risk management benefits until all three sections of the project are complete and the levee receives an acceptable rating to meet FEMA requirements thereby reducing or eliminating flood insurance. When the DSEIS comment period ends, the Corps of Engineers will prepare a FSEIS which will provide detailed responses to the public and agency comments and include changes and clarifications resulting from those comments. The FSEIS will then be circulated to agencies and the public for a minimum 30-day review period, after which the Corps and its local cost sharing sponsor, Indianapolis Department of Public Works, will make final decisions on the future direction of the project. Those decisions will be set forth in a Record of Decision (ROD) by the Corps of Engineers. The ROD will explain the reasons for the project decisions, based upon the information contained in the FSEIS. “Public safety is our number one concern,” said Bonnie Jennings, Army Corps of Engineers project manager. “When the levee is complete, home owners and businesses can rest assured that that the levees and floodwalls – the complete system – will reduce risks that flooding causes.” The DSEIS comment period has been extended to Friday, August. 31, 2012. Written comments may be submitted at the public hearing, sent via e-mail to michael.turner@usace.army.mil, mailed to the address below or dropped off at the Corps of Engineers events on Aug. 23. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Nearly 2400 wines from all over the world were judged as part of the 2012 Indy International Wine Competition at Purdue University during the first week of August. For the first time in the 39 years of the competition, an Indiana winery won the "Wine of the Year" Award. The 2011 Vignoles from River City Winery in New Albany claimed that prize. “For an Indiana winery to win Wine of the Year is very exciting for the Indiana wine industry,” said Jeanette Merritt, Marketing Director for the Indiana Wine Grape Council. White Wine of the Year honors went to Tabor Hill Winery of Michigan for their 2011 Gewürztraminer. Chateau Ste. Michelle of Woodinville, Washington won Red Wine of the Year for their 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon. Rosé Wine of the Year was awarded to 21 Brix Winery of Portland, New York for their 2011 Ellatawba Rosé. The Sparkling Wine of the Year was awarded to Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards of Sonoma, California for their Carneros Cuvee and Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery of BC, Canada took the Dessert Wine of the Year honors for their 2011 Signature Ice Wine. Hoosier wineries garnered 363 total medals. That includes 22 double gold, 26 gold, 110 silver, and 76 bronze medals. Oliver Winery of Bloomington won the Indiana Winery of the Year, the Governor’s Cup, recognizing the winningest Indiana winery. Indiana Wine of the Year was awarded to Wildcat Creek Winery, Lafayette, for their Chambourcin. The Indy International has a special award division for Indiana grown wines. A wine must be composed of more than 85% Indiana grown fruit to be eligible. Wildcat Creek Winery, Lafayette, won Indiana-Made Traminette of the Year, honoring Indiana’s Signature Wine and Grape. They also won Indiana-Grown American Wine of the Year for their Steuben. Brown County Winery of Nashville won the Indiana-Grown Fruit Wine of the Year for their 2011 Hard Cider. River City Winery of New Albany won the French-American Wine category for their 2011 Vignoles. Huber Orchard, Winery & Vineyards of Starlight won the Indiana-grown Vinifera Wine of the Year for their 2010 Heritage. Gettin’ Ripped in Ripple by Laura Minor
Getting Started You have probably noticed that I regularly have guest columnists write for my column; and I love doing so. No, I'm not a slacker... I find it an awesome way to share other perspectives of health and wellness through my trainers. This is the first article that is authored by my amazing client Jen K. She has been working with me for a year and has made incredible strides. I thought it would be great to share her story through her own words. Enjoy! We find ourselves saying it all the time, “wow, I really need to lose weight.” But, at what point do you decide that enough is enough, and you have to make a major change? The answer to that question likely is unique to every individual, maybe it was seeing a picture of yourself and realizing that you didn’t look the way you thought you did, maybe you have avoided mirrors for quite a while and suddenly were faced with one you couldn’t ignore, or maybe you decided that you wanted to get fit for an upcoming race or activity. For me, it was a combination of all of the above. I saw a picture and was horrified, then I took a long look in the mirror and knew I was unhappy with what I saw. Next, I signed up for the Mini. No matter what the reason, I knew it was time for a change, and I knew the time was now. But, how would I get started? And more importantly, how would I keep going, when the scale stopped moving downward and it seemed I had been plateaued for months. Over the course of the past year, I have lost 60 pounds. How did I do it? I cleaned up my diet, started exercising, and created a few rules along the way. #1 - Establish your goals, write them out, and keep them somewhere you can see them regularly. Then, break the larger down into smaller parts. Are you out to lose a specific amount of weight? Do you want to try out a new diet for a certain period of time? Do you want to fit into a specific size designer jean? Take your bigger goal and break it down. The more you can feel accomplishment and ownership over your goals, the more motivated you will be to continue. Choose a treat or something to reward yourself with when you meet your goals. #2 - Schedule your workouts and track your food. Every workout, whether with a personal trainer, going to a class, or out for a run, went on my calendar. I didn’t count calories, I chose healthy food in smaller portions and wrote the food down. Don’t lie to yourself, write everything down that goes into your mouth. #3 - Don’t get mad at yourself. There will be mistakes. You will eat something that isn’t healthy. You might miss a workout once in a while. You’re human, it happens. An infrequent dessert, one missed workout, or one extra snack – these things won’t ruin your weight loss strategy. The important part is forgiving yourself and moving forward. Also, don’t let one slip-up ruin your diet for the day. I used to say “well, I already ate (insert unhealthy dessert here), I might as well keep going.” Stop it before you get out of control and lose the entire day. #4 – Recognize when you’re bored with your workouts and don’t be scared to try something new. My goal is 5-6 workouts per week. Doing the same thing that many times per week can get boring, easily. Mix it up, try different classes at different gyms. If you can, find coupons for gyms in the area. At one point I was going to classes at 7 different gyms. Sometimes I got nervous at a new place, but they are happy to have you, and half of the battle is just getting yourself there. When the scale starts moving downward, you’ll know all of the lifestyle changes are paying off. Set goals, make them feasible, determine you rewards, and plan how you’ll get there. There are cheeses, breads, pies, jams, honey, and other scrumptious baked goods. Flowers and plants abound. You may also find specialties including fresh backyard birdseed, local crafts, scents, oils, dips, dog gourmets, coffees, teas, and pastas. Breakfast sandwiches, tamales, crepes, pizza, and other ready-to-eat treats are sold too. My favorites are the flavored oils and vinegars, the fresh herbs, the mixed bouquets of field-grown, local flowers plus the wonderful sweet corn and tart apples. I so miss weekly trips to market on cold January days that I make a point of getting to them in the growing season. When time is right, the taste of succulent Indiana berries is not to be missed. Our markets are a little bit of heaven each week, and the array is ever changing.

The annual Broad Ripple Hamfest was held on August 4 at 74th and Westfield Boulevard at the Lobraico's. Amateur radio enthusiasts turned out to see the goodies the vendors brought to sell.
The markets are a great place to take children. Give them a few dollars and let them shop to encourage healthy eating. You may be amazed by what catches their fancy. The markets are also a great place to bring guests visiting from out of town to provide the flavor of our community. These small markets provide a preview of the Indiana State Fair, showcasing our agriculture and ingenuity. Here’s hoping to see you at one of the markets in the coming weeks. Nominations Open For BRVA Election The Broad Ripple Village Association is looking for a few good men, and women, to serve on the Board of Directors. The annual election for the BRVA Board will be held at the fall Public Meeting on October 16. Four director positions will be up for election. The three-year term of office for these positions begins on January 1, 2013 and ends on December 31, 2015. “Serving on the Board is a great way to help chart the course for Broad Ripple, while getting to know neighbors, local business members and community leaders,” said Mark Wolf, BRVA President. "We have a lot of fun, too.” To be considered as a nominee, an individual must have a desire to invest time and energy on projects to benefit Broad Ripple. Board members spend an average of about six hours monthly on BRVA activities and meetings, and are involved hands-on on BRVA committees. Nominees must be members of BRVA (with dues paid as of September 17). BRVA is active 12 months of the year. Through its volunteers and standing committees, BRVA monitors the developments in the Village and works with city officials to promote neighborhood safety and improvement. The organization communicates with its stakeholders on activities in the neighborhood, promotes its member businesses to the community, and sponsors numerous special events. These activities are designed to maintain, and enhance, the livability and desirability of Broad Ripple as a premier neighborhood and cultural district within Indianapolis. The deadline for nominations is October 6. All nominations will then be reviewed by the Nominating Committee which will select eight nominees for a slate.
