mario@broadripplegazette.com If you’re looking for a classic model car, Steve Ring can steer you in the right direction. The owner of Ringo’s Vintage Cars recently took the driver’s seat to a new career, which has been his life-long hobby. His office is located at 6568 Cornell Avenue on the Monon Trail. “When I was little, my older brother 6568 Cornell Ave always loved cars [B5 on map] and he bought a 1960 (317) 682-4070 Corvette. He kept trading Corvettes and I ringosvintagecars.com got really interested in them. When it came my turn to buy a car, I saved money from cutting lawns. My first car was a 1969 Mach I Mustang. My dad took me to a rough part of town to look at it. He let me have the buying decision. It needed some bodywork, but with trial and

error, I made it something to be proud of. I bought it for $725 and doubled my money four years later when I sold it. That was a drivable restoration. I kind of got hooked on it. That’s what started the fire. Basically, there are two types of restoration. A drivable car that needs paint and some motor work. And the other type of restoration which is kind of nuts and bolts–what you call a museum restoration. I find cars that need some restoration and go from there. I mainly deal with building on the restoration process. I’ve restored Camaros, Corvettes, Pontiac GTOs, Chevelles, Mustangs, Thunderbirds and Shelby Cobras,” he explained. Ring is organizing the Inaugural Broad Ripple Classic Car Show that will be held on Sunday, September 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Broad Ripple Park and at American Legion Post 34 (6440 Westfield Boulevard). There is a $15 car entry fee where some event proceeds will go to a worthy local cause. “Some of the money from the car show will be donated to American Legion Post 34 and to the Marion Country Animal Control downtown, since there are a lot of dog owners in Broad Ripple. [The Legion is] providing 10 parking spaces along the Monon Trail for the event. It’s the right thing to give back,” he noted. His decision to shift gears from his daytime job was an easy one. “I was in the corporate world, living in Chicago and working at an Internet company and hit an age and kind of followed my passion. I always did this (restoration) after work on the side. I’m working 12-hour days now and enjoying what I do. I’ve been doing this for a year. I go out and try to find people’s cars that are sitting out collecting dust. Chasing the dream is the thing,” Ring emphasized. One of his recent automotive discoveries is an existing project. “I’m currently restoring a 1967 Indianapolis 500 pace car that I found in a barn in Indianapolis where it was sitting for 31 years. It’s currently under restoration and I hope to get it back in the (500 Festival) parade by next May. It’s a Camaro RS/SS. I found an actual 1967 race program with a race ticket underneath the seat of the car. It

deserves to be back out on the road. You hear stories where people have these cars and it’s a shame that there’s no family to pass them on to, but there’s people like me that love this stuff.” Ring is not only restoring cars, but also reviving a part of automotive history that symbolizes the American free spirit to explore the country’s landscape. This gave new life and meaning to highways like the “Mother Road,” also known as Route 66. It’s not just a national thoroughfare, but also a state of mind. Steve has long standing ties to Broad Ripple. “I grew up in this area and played baseball and tennis at Chatard High School. A lot of the hard work and dedication (to restoration) comes from sports. It teaches you a lot about being dedicated to something. It really does help in life. My dad, Gene Ring, played basketball at Indiana University and coached at IU where he was Branch McCracken’s assistant. He later coached basketball and was athletic director at Broad Ripple High School.” Gene Ring was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1984. He remains in search of a special model: “I still haven’t found my favorite car – a 1967 Corvette with a 427 motor and a 435 horsepower engine. I search every corner for a car that is sitting there, waiting to come back to life. This is a wordof-mouth type of business. If I do get a car up, I’ll sell it on eBay or take it to a classic car auction. I have a list of people who are looking for specific models and I try to match them up with the right buyer and seller. I thought Broad Ripple would be a great location because I’m right on the Monon Trail. I’ll park a GTO out here and people will come over and look at it. I thought ‘this place needs a car show, to have an auto rally where people can drive around and get something to eat. The slow traffic on 62nd Street helps,’” he said. His work includes more than automotive restorations. “I also do appraisals and have cars restored across town. I have different guys who do different types of restorations. I give a finder’s fee if there is a car that I buy that the seller tells me about and I buy it. I’ve paid up to $500 before. Mid-1960s Corvettes are what I like the most,” he mentioned. I did it! I made to an Indiana State Fair event all seventeen days. I qualify my record by “event,” because I spent one evening at a State Fair concert at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse. Even though Jerry Adams and his crew at Levy Restaurants (the food folks at BLF) made special Fair food – can you say funnel cake fries? – it still seemed like I was cheating on the Fair. I attended two of the concerts at the Fieldhouse and enjoyed both of them. Who knew I was a Fanilow? Who knew that Fanilow was a thing? Barry Manilow put on an excellent show and I can’t believe I’m admitting this in print, but I knew the words to most of the songs. For better or worse, the crowd was pretty much a mirror of myself: women of a certain age who could stand to lose photo by Nora Spitznogle fifteen pounds. And Journey’s Arnel Pineda at the State Fair concert. enthusiastic. Very enthusiastic. I also attended the Loverboy, Pat Benatar, and Journey shows (speaking of things I can’t believe that I’m admitting in a public forum). I was there for Pat Benatar for sure. She sounded great and looked amazing. Unfortunately she decided that she didn’t want any photographers to shoot her show, so I’ll leave you with a photo of Journey’s Arnel Pineda. I caught the end of REO Speedwagon’s set on the Free Stage at the Fairgrounds. They sounded just like, um, REO Speedwagon. My favorite Fair concert was The Spinners. They got moved to the Farm Bureau Building because of rain. Some form of the Motown Spinners has been around for fifty years. The R & B band can teach the rest of us about showmanship and harmonies. It was steamy in the Farm Bureau Building Auditorium that night. I spent most of my time between Pioneer Village and the Home and Family Arts Building. The folks in Pioneer Village have revamped the demonstrations and I really enjoyed the changes – I have a greater understanding of wheat production through the ages. And I can also explain the old clichés of ‘separating the wheat from the chaff’ and ‘cream rises to the top’ now. photo by Nora Spitznogle Mauri Williamson Mauri Williamson at Pioneer Village. started Pioneer Village in 1961 with a display under the old Grandstand. Williamson is still a fixture around the Pioneer Village. He’s quick with a smile, a bit of agricultural history, and a corny joke. The Home and Family Arts building was chockfull of baked goods, antiques, photographs, quilts, artwork, and hand-made goodness. I spent hours there and didn’t come close to seeing everything. All and all, it was another fabulous Indiana State Fair. Thanks everyone who worked hard to put it together.

Since we’re on the subject of the Indiana State Fair – and trust me, I’ll stay on that subject as long as I can – in case you missed Harold Lee Miller’s outstanding photographs in the Normandy Barn during the Fair you can still catch the exhibit. Miller is hosting an open house at his studio on Friday, September 7 as part of the First Friday gallery tours. Miller started documenting the culture of Indiana fairs in 2005 with a series of photographs taken at the Indiana State Fair in the Poultry and Rabbit Barn. Over the next few years he photographed several county fairs. These beautiful photographs became the basis for his book Fair Culture. Or as I think of it the “Hey, I should have written that,” book. All kidding aside, it’s a great book and has a prominent place on my coffee table. The Fair photos will be on display at his gallery in “Little Five Points,” in the Fountain Square neighborhood.

The upcoming season includes the presentation of three productions, accompanied by a wide range of community and educational programs for all ages. Productions for the 2012-2013 season are: Amahl and the Night Visitors – Gian Carlo Menotti, December 7th -16th; Akhnaten – Phillip Glass, March 8th and 9th at 8pm; The Flying Dutchman – Richard Wagner, May 10th at 8pm and May 12th at 2pm. Indy Jazz Fest presented by Marsh lineup and dates
The Indy Jazz Fest presented by Marsh annual finale at Opti Park in Broad Ripple will now take place over two days, Saturday, Sept. 15 and Sunday, Sept. 16. The week-long celebration is September 10-16. The lineup in Opti Park will feature headliners Stanley Clarke and George Duke on September 15. Brian Culbertson will headline September 16. Additional festival performers over the course of the week-long celebration will also include the Aaron Diehl Quartet, Gerald Albright, Robert Glasper Experience. The Latin Tinge, Slide Hampton, Karl Denson, Mark Winkler and Manhattan Transfer’s Cheryl Bentyne, with the rest of the diverse lineup will be announced throughout the summer. The full schedule and ticket information will be available at www.indyjazzfest.net. The 2012 festival will be held over a seven-day period in many locations around the city. Since 2009 this approach to the Indy Jazz Fest matches the great venues Indianapolis has to offer with the diversity of jazz styles. Each day of the festival week, visitors are welcomed into a new space where the interaction with music and fellow community members is exciting. This year's featured venues include the Indiana Landmarks Center, Cabaret at The Columbia Club, The Jazz Kitchen and the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center at the University of Indianapolis, all leading up to the two-day outdoor grand finale on Saturday, Sept.15 and Sunday, Sept. 16 held on the grounds of Opti Park at the Indianapolis Art Center in Broad Ripple. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Corps holds meeting for levee comments By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com The US Army Corps of Engineers held a meeting to collect public input on the proposed White River levee project south of 56th Street. The first two phases of the levee project are complete. Those phases protected Broad Ripple Village and Warfleigh. The 3rd phase is to continue south to Butler, where the potential flood area for the White River ends due to land elevation. The released proposal from the Corps shows the levee wall constructed along the White River near the Rivera Club, then turning east and crossing the canal. The remainder of the levee wall would run between the canal and Westfield Boulevard, obscuring the canal from view and, more importantly, leaving the approximately 700 residents of Rocky Ripple on the "wrong" side of the wall. The August 23rd meeting and open house at Meridian Street Methodist Church was an opportunity for the public to view the current proposal and to officially register comments on the record to the Corps about this levee plan and also about the tree removal along the levee. The Corps was represented by Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District Commander Col. Luke Leonard. Leonard is the one responsible for making the final decision on the levee. Leonard stated that the window for public comment has been extended until September 28. Participants were given three minutes for comment. Many people spoke and

most received rousing ovations from the audience. All of the comments were to become part of the public record and should be available for review. Most of the comments were in support of the proposal that includes the Town of Rocky Ripple on the dry side of the levee. This proposal would have the levee follow the White River rather than the canal. Estimates from the Corps shows that the construction would cost $14.4 million to follow the canal, leaving Rocky Ripple unprotected, and $50.3 million to follow the river. Several commenters suggested that the 14.4 estimate is likely low and the 50.5 estimate high, and followed that it is difficult to check the estimates because the Corps was asked repeatedly by residents for the details behind the estimates but Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District did not receive them. Commander Col. Luke Leonard Other comments expressed surprise that any plan by the Corps would not include all residents and structures in the affected flood area. Dennis Falkenberg of Butler-Tarkington stood up for the Central Canal, "[My wife and I moved to this area,] drawn into this neighborhood by the very feature you are out to destroy, the Indianapolis Central Canal. The incredible beauty, nature and history of this neighborhood we were drawn to are all under attack by this plan you promote." For plan details visit www.indy.gov and search for levee. Robert Tomey, President of Rocky Ripple Town Council asked to not split the town with the new levee.

"It should be like the old West where you had to check your guns when you walk into a bar," says Tony Cartlidge with a laugh. The tall Brit is winemaker of Cartlidge & Browne Winery now located in the Sonoma county town of Santa Rosa, California and he and I are talking about the abundance of cell phones in wine bars. We both grimace at the thought of two people sitting at a table sharing a lovely bottle of wine, but forgoing the conversation to do social media instead. Somehow we both think a glass of wine calls for face-to-face time not face-to-Facebook. Cartlidge is in Indianapolis for a fast and furious two-day visit to local wine shops and restaurants tasting his latest releases. Cartlidge and winery partner Glenn Browne first started producing wine in Sonoma County in 1980. From the get-go their attitude was to make tasty wines at affordable prices. But, back then American wine consumers believed that in order for wine to taste good it had to be from France and cost a lot of money. So most California producers were using French names like Chablis and Burgundy to break into the market. And many were putting high price tags on bottles. Not Cartlidge and Browne. They kept making Old World-styled wines, but selling them at what today we now call new world prices. Though consumers weren't quite getting it, up and coming culinarians including Alice Waters of Chez Panisse were, and Cartlidge & Brown Chardonnay was a staple on her menu. Then in 1996 wine critic Robert Parker got his hands on a bottle and wrote a column featuring Cartlidge & Browne wines as a glowing example of how a wine could taste fantastic and not cost a fortune. Despite the accolades and sudden popularity with the wine drinking public, Cartlidge & Browne didn't change its marketing plan. In fact they worked harder to source great grapes from all over California to make classic yet consumer affordable wines. When the Two Buck Chuck era hit it was suddenly OK to drink "cheap" wine on a daily basis. Many vintners took advantage of the grape glut and made a lot of money. However the glut is gone and recent years of erratic weather are causing many wineries to produce fewer bottles and charge more. Not C & B. "We still have 25-year contracts with growers so we can buy from all over California and not have to increase prices," says Cartlidge. As if the C& B label wasn't affordable enough they also offer the LOT 205 line of wines which retail for $11 or less. The C&B wines are truly French in style. No surprise since I asked Cartlidge if he was shipwrecked on an island and could have a case of wine float ashore, what would it be? "Perhaps a nice Fleurie," he says with a smile. "And no cell phones." You can find the Cartlidge & Brown and LOT 205 wines throughout Indianapolis. Here are tasting notes from a few of my favorites: Cartlidge & Brown Pinot Noir: The Pinot Noir offers up red fruit and hint of truffle and spice. Full bodied with lingering finish this would make the perfect bottle for Thanksgiving turkey or a nice piece of grilled salmon. Cartlidge & Brown Merlot: The merlot has aromas and flavors of cola, cherry, plum with a nice finishing hint of cocoa. Bigger, bolder and more intense than most California merlots this wine packs a punch and would be delicious with prime rib or pork tenderloin. Cartlidge & Brown Chardonnay: Very Burgundian in style with aromas and flavors of d'anjou pear, yellow delicious apple and just a touch of caramel, vanilla, oak. Try it with roast chicken. LOT 205 Chardonnay: BIG tropical fruit notes of banana, pineapple, mango with notes of butterscotch and toasty oak in a creamy finish. Jill A. Don't let lack of breakfast "break your FAST!" To eat or not to eat before heading to your cardio sweat session or favorite class? That is a common question, and not surprising due to conflicting recent research on this topic. Several studies suggest exercising while your body is low on food may be a good way to trim excess fat. For example, European researchers found that cyclists who trained without eating burned significantly more fat than their counterparts who ate. The theory behind this is that since muscles usually get their energy from carbohydrates, if you haven't eaten before exercising your body doesn't have many carbohydrates in reserve, forcing it to burn fat instead. This is in fact a true statement, so skipping your pre-workout meal would seem like the right thing to do to accelerate weight loss. Herein, lies the "twist" to these findings however. More fat was burned in a fasted state...DURING THE EXERCISE ITSELF. More current research shows that people who burn more fat during their workouts actually burn less fat the rest of the day. Fats and carbs have a "teeter-totter" type of relationship. As you burn more carbohydrates during your workout, the body will burn more fat post exercise. This “afterburn effect" where your metabolism is elevated for several hours or days following your workout is critical when debating the benefits of fasted cardio. In short, the afterburn effect is calorie burn AFTER exercise. The more intense the exercise, the greater the afterburn effect. For example, sprinting as fast as you can for 30 seconds for 5 rounds will have a much larger afterburn effect compared to jogging for 30 minutes. Furthermore, while you may burn more fat during your workout on an empty stomach, your overall workout output will be lower. Resulting in less ability to burn fat post-exercise. When considering a 24 hour period, cardio on an empty stomach is less effective. These finding apply to BOTH moderate and high intensity exercise but in differing ways. In moderate exercise, research has shown that groups that ate before their session continued to burn significantly more calories up to 24 hours after the exercise bout. Therefore, fasting before moderate exercise does not enhance fat use as much as having a light meal pre-activity. In high-intense exercise (whether it be aerobic or anaerobic), most of your energy comes from glycogen (carbs). If you deplete your glycogen stores, you compromise your energy output/ability. As glycogen stores in the muscles and liver are depleted, and the blood glucose level begins to fall, fatigue, lack of coordination, light-headedness and lack of concentration can occur; Also known as "hitting the wall" or "bonking", because fat can’t be metabolized fast enough to support the level of intensity. So the take away message: Steady state fasted cardio might burn more fat during your workout, but your post-workout fat burn is compromised. Now I'm not saying to hit the breakfast buffet before heading out on your weekend jog. Something light and easily digestible is ideal, such as a piece of fruit, smoothie, a cup of oatmeal, protein shake, or a handful of trail mix. If you exercise later in your day and it has been 3 or more hours since your last meal, you should have a small snack pre-workout. So eat your Wheaties!! Laura Minor owner and operator of So.Be.Fit. Saturday, September 15th is the second annual Putt Putt Pub Crawl in Broad Ripple called Putt from the Ruff. Nine participating bars create their own putt putt holes - Broad Ripple Tavern, Wild Beaver Saloon, Landsharks, OPT's, Chumleys, Average Joe's, Flatwater, Canal Bistro, and Connor's Pub. It's a fun event and the proceeds go towards our canine friends. Teams (will total 4 highest scores) make their way through the participating Broad Ripple bars while putt-putting at holes designed by each bar. Money raised benefits the National Canine Cancer Foundation, FIDO (Friends of Indianapolis Dogs Outside), and ARPO (Alliance for Responsible Pet Ownership). Registration starts at 10:30 AM. All team members need to report to the Broad Ripple Tavern no later than 11:30 AM. Waivers must be signed by all team members prior to start time. All team members must be 21 years of age. Sunday, September 16th Todd Oliver and Friends will be at the Murat Theatre at Old National Centre at 5:00 PM. Todd is a ventriloquist/comedian with three talking dogs; Lucy, Irving and Elvis (a Westie, Boston Terrier and Basset Hound). They have been seen on America’s Got Talent, The Today Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Late Show with David Letterman. Letterman proclaimed Todd Oliver as one of the top five ventriloquists in the world. Check them out on line to see their funny act on America’s Got Talent. On another note I know we had a lot of frightened pets when we had such a severe storm on a predawn Sunday a few weeks ago. We were right in the epicenter and had neighbors and customers with fallen trees on their roofs. It is so sad to see our beautiful old trees brought down. Next to us, the city came and finished the job on a Maple tree we have enjoyed for decades. It must have been over 100 years old. Chain saws could be heard for days in our community. 52nd and College became a four way stop for more than a day as power was being restored from the fallen trees which took down lines. More noise and scares are coming as pets brace for Labor Day fireworks. We have found that Thunder Shirts are a helpful solution to dog anxiety. They work by being tight and forming a swaddling effect. The manufacturer guarantees satisfaction. Another solution is calming chews made by Pet Naturals of Vermont. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Chick, Chick, Chick It’s nearly time for the second annual Tour de Coops, taking place September 16 from 1-6 p.m. and featuring chicken coops in the Broad Ripple, Meridian-Kessler, Butler-Tarkington, and Rocky Ripple neighborhoods. Nap Town Chickens is the organizer with many local businesses sponsoring the event. As one of the sponsors, Backyard Birds will also be a welcoming water stop at its 54th Street store. Last year’s inaugural event, organized by Andrew Brake, was a self-guided bicycle tour that began at Broad Ripple Park. The suggested $5 donation benefited Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and INDYCO, two organizations working to improve the community. The event was an impressive success, raising more than $4,000 and educating 600 participants on details of raising backyard chickens. This year there will be 12 "show coops" on display and a couple of Project Poultry schools with coops. The 2012 Tour de Coops begins at CFI #84, located at 440 E. 57th Street. This is an "open-house" style event and can be explored at your leisure. (naptownchickens.org) At Backyard Birds, we are amazed by the interest in chicken raising. The store offered several chicken raising workshops when we first became aware of the community interest. Being a feed store, we continually had requests for chicken feed. While we had already been stocking feed for swans and lake birds, we now also have quality chick starter and chicken food in addition to scratch and ready-made coops. Urban chicken raisers no longer have to drive to the country to get feed. It’s right on 54th Street. We get to know chicken raisers and enjoy stories of their experiences. From reports about the first eggs a hen lays and fun names given to chickens (like Rhoda, Henrietta, Gloria), to favorite snacks they feed (like spaghetti or strawberry tops) to tales of illnesses or demise, we get colorful details from our urban chicken raisers. We have heard accounts of a favorite hen pecking others in the yard, habits such as chickens welcoming the human at the end of the day, and personalities displayed that are almost human. The saddest stories of all are the tragedies inflicted upon the girls (hens) from foxes, raccoons, dogs, or hawks. Several of our clients have lost multiple girls to predators, but each time a hardware store visit helps them secure their coops even more. I think most of our urban farmers are learning their skills by trial and error. From extreme weather challenges to city predators, our customers are developing their chicken raising expertise.
